It is surprising that there is no indication in either the web

Both the default (below the list of queud songs) and fishbone (above
the list of queued songs) skins do show which playlist is playing.
Other skins might show it as well.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs. AirTunes Setup

2009-01-22 Thread jo-wie

I had the same idea about a cheap music streaming system and did start
with my Win XP PC, iTunes, Airfoil and an Airport Express. I got music
streamed to my amp and I could control it in a cumbersome way. It was
frustrating to have different components which do work together or not.
At least I was really thinking about to buy a Mac mini, because the
best integration of all components is by using only Apple products.

At this point I was thinking about what I really want ... it's simple
... just hear my music hassle free and in good quality. From here I
took a deep look at the Squeezebox Classic (which was so expensive
in the beginning of my Odyssey) and found my solution.

It's simple to use, a display which shows the audience what's been
played, I can use the original IR remote, old OfA Digital 5, my
daughters iPod touch :), my PC or The Squeezecenter is portable an
can be installed on so many different systems (Ubuntu on a low power PC
in my case). So many plugins and settings to create a tailor made
system. And the best - in the forum and bugzilla you can report issues,
enhancements and you get real feedback. The developers and many, many
other friendly and helpful people do hear and support you.

I'm happy and do really enjoy my music.

[EDIT: apologies - forgot this is a General Discussion thread, not

Can't see a .deb there yet, either. [EDIT: one there now; but I'll
 wait for STABLE to update]

There are issues here, see
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58632

But I usually don't go through the repos - I grab the .deb right from
downloads.slimdevices.com and it was there right after the
announcement.

I haven't installed any myself. Are you suggesting also unselecting all
the ones included with SC, as listed on the Plugins page of 'Settings'?

No, that should be fine then.

That's what I've not been able to discern yet - what conditions it
occurs under, and how to reproduce it. It's what I was referring to
when I said it looks like I may need to get down to some systematic
 solo investigation.

It definitely helps, but it isn't an absolute requirement. If you
can't reproduce it yourself and you know what you're looking for, the
chances of the developers reproducing it are even lower. This is why
logs are so important, although figuring out which set of debugging
flags to set can sometimes be tricky.

Intermittent issues are the worst!

Moi?! How could you suggest such a thing?! ;-) But, seriously, you're
right, in general, of course; but in this case, I can't imagine there's
 any configuration involved here.

That's because I've been there, done that and have the T-shirt. :-)
Seriously though, there are a LOT of settings in SC and it's easy to
misplace one. You're right, your issue is unlikely to be a
misconfiguration, but it bears repeating. You wouldn't want someone to
waste a lot of time only to find out that it's a setting you missed...

Yes, I did check, but couldn't see anything with 'track progress bar'.
(But is that the correct name/description to refer to the bar on the
screen saver that gets filled in as the track is playing and shows what
proportion of it has played? I don't know; and how would I find out?
Guessing the right technical names to use in searches is always a bit
 of a puzzle, isn't it?)

It definitely is, especially when you can only come up with broad,
general terms to use in your search - those seem to be my sorts of
issues as well! Just give it a shot and put in an effort - if it does
end up being a duplicate, at least you tried.

Thanks, as always for your help.

You're welcome!

need a little bit more signal power to reach a room where the signal is
 sketchy.

From what I've heard, Tomato is much more simple than DD-WRT, so if
you're only looking for signal boosting, you may want to look into
that. But I've run DD-WRT for years and never had to reset it.

BTW boosting signal power may or may not solve your problem. Boosting
signal power also increases noise, so your S/N ratio doesn't change.
You may get a higher strength signal, but it won't be a higher quality
signal.

Also this overheats the radio chipset and can result in premature
failure in extreme cases.

Try channel changing, high-gain or directional antennas first. Even
repositioning the antennas can help immensely. See

Plus time effort? I'm not sure what the point is given you can get a

Hi Radish...

You are absolutely right!

It doesn't make sense - if you only need 1 remote. But I have kids and
the remotes are constantly hitting the floor. I find my self easier to
live with now that I can replace broken remotes for $30 or less (i.e.
wait until they are on sale!). Plus, once you develop a configuration
you like for your particular situation, re-programming a new remote of
the same type takes seconds.

Things to look out for:
1) There are 2 types of JP1 remotes, most anything you buy now will be
the newer type.
2) The JP1 connector (an array of 2x3 0.1 spaced pins) is usually found
under the battery case cover. But some remotes do not have this
populated. Try to check before buying or ask in the JP1 forums.
3) I have never found a guy behind the counter that knew beans about
this stuff. So don't be surprised by the blank look you might get if
you ask.
4) The JP1 web site has files for many remotes and many remote
controlled appliances. The trick is to merge these files together into
something useful for you. Once you have done this, you should stick to
that particular remote.

[slim] Anyone tried the Olive Opus No4?

2009-01-22 Thread willyhoops

I have a couple of transporters but the hassle of running a separate
server and dodgy wifi connections is killing me. Has anyone tried the

The display on the machine looks great - not as large as the
transporter but more character width and you can see the album art.
It's cheaper than the transporter despite integrated CD (useful from
time to time I guess) and a 400GB hard drive.

My real concern is the ease of loading my flac music collection and the
ease of selecting tracks. On the transporter I only use the browse music
folder path based technique, anyone know how the opus works.

Many Thanks

[slim] 7.3.2 - Scroll Bars

2009-01-22 Thread whdean

Just upgraded to SC 7.3.2 on Win Vista Basic - SP1.

The scroll bars are intermittant in SqueezeCenter -

On the main page (Default skin), where there should be a scroll bar,
sometimes the bars appear, and sometimes they don't - I'm talking about
on a page when it's too long to fit on one screen page - When they do
not appear, there does not appear to be any way to access the items
that are clearly below the screen page.

On the Settings page, there are no scroll bars at all - Not even
intermittant - For example, on the plug-ins tab, the screen will show
items alphabetically down thru about L, but no way to access the rest
of the items.

I tried re-installing, but no help.

On my Win XP - SP3 computers, the scroll bars are fine when I access
the servers SC page.

Any thought?

Thanks !

[slim] SBR and signal strength

2009-01-22 Thread roll - gybe

Hey guys, I added an SBR to my network of SB3s.
I am running it wirelessly over wireless-b. I have 2 ethernet wired
SB3s and one running on the wireless-g upstairs.

The SBR has 73%-75% signal strength, and it stutters like crazy. It
stutters with FLAC, AAC, MP3 256, and S/N.

Is this at all normal?

I tested the SBR upstairs in my main stereo. Over a powerline AV
connector on a different floor, no problem. Wirelessly connected near
the wireless-g router no problem.

I am not sure what to think.

Here is one option, but I don't know how I would execute:

When I use the SBR is when I am in my office. When I am in my office,
I have my computer in my office. I use wireless in my office because
it is on the other side of the house from the router. I prefer to hook
into my main wireless-g router. (SBR gets 35% off that one, which has a
different address and channel) Can I hook up my wireless-b in my office
without an internet connection to connect my computer to the SBR
(computer still hooked up to the wireless-g for internet)? If so will
I be able to use S/N? \

I guess I asked 2 questions:
-is my SBR behavior normal?
-can i jump from the sbr right onto my pc?

trying not to go buy more network rubble.

Thanks guys
Tom

not very useful these days. To re-use it and keep it out of a

Presumably your office computer has a wired network interface in

802.11b routers are network rubble these days. Use the wired ports

Mark, thanks for your detailed response.
In fact, my home office has no wired connection. I connect through my

Basic question: showing on what, exactly? The web ui or the Duet

the album art from your library. If it's the Controller, a factory reset
might do the trick (turn the Controller off, then hold down the + key

The Rhapsody art might be something different entirely, and is quite
possibly something out of your control, such as Rhapsody temporarily
not sending the album art. In fact, that seems quite likely to me,
since in my experience Rhapsody often fails to send the requested
music, so I expect it to be no better with album art :(

roll - gybe;388149 Wrote:
In fact, my home office has no wired connection. I connect through my

What I was suggesting was to use the wired network interface on your
office computer. You indicate this connects wirelessly. Most
computers also have a wired interface. I assume this is not used on
your office computer.

But you can bridge the wired to the wireless network interface using
something Windows calls Internet Connection Sharing. You then wire
your SBR to this wired port, enable ICS, and traffic to/from the SBR is
bridged over to the wireless interface, which you indicate is working.
Also if your office computer has Internet access, you will have
SqueezeNetwork access on your SBR as well.

Before spending more money on powerline adaptors and otherwise worthless
stuff, I wanted to try my old wireless B router as an access point.

It'll work OK under ideal conditions - but real-life isn't ideal! Yes,
you can reuse it - its best use would be as a wired-only switch.

If you can bridge the office computer's wired and wireless network
interfaces, it should work without you having to spend anything aside
from a single Ethernet cable, which may have been included with one of
your routers. If not, it's available anywhere for a few dollars.

I reset the configuration, and hooked my ethernet line near my SB3 into
it. I plugged my SB3 into a port, and hooked the SBR up to it
wirelessly. I tried hooking my computer to it wirelessly, and my
internet connection works no problem. For the sake of continuity, I
switched my computer back to the G network after the test.

I don't understand what you're saying. What's it and which port are
you plugging into?

It probably doesn't matter, try the bridging thing first.

So that is the set-up. I am really just trying to be smart and not
spend another hundred bucks when I have all these devices laying around
 the house.

You don't have to spend anything. And for the record, I do like
reusing equipment when possible but it doesn't look like your 802.11b
router can be used in this configuration. Keep it around, you can use
it as a switch.

Re: [slim] Best Router to Use With Squeezbox?

2009-01-22 Thread florca

I've just started using an old (Mark 1) Linksys WRT54GS, which had been
sitting unused in a cupboard, in place of a Billion modem / router
which has been giving me some wireless problems. I also looked at the
Tomato / DD-WRT choice and saw some of the instability comments, but
DD-WRT has a couple of features I really wanted and it's been 100%
stable for me.

In particular with DD-WRT you can assign the WAN port as a 5th LAN port
(useful for me as I'm still using the Billion as a modem / Gateway /
Firewall) and the WiFi configuration seems more flexible.

Signal strength and consistency is massively better than the Billion.
I'd also read about the heat / early failure problems if you turn up
the power too much, so I've disabled all features I'm not using and set
the Wireless power to a level where I get good coverage throughout the
house but no more - a setting of 75 in my case, which gives a signal
strength reading of 65% on my most distant WiFi Squeezebox and perfect
FLAC streaming. Net of this is that I'm very happy with DD-WRT and
would recommend it to anyone.

Brgds

Lifetime warranty with 'next-business-day advance replacement
(available in most countries)'.

I never can figure out why APs (other than sales volume) cost more than
wireless routers. The only real downside to this AP is that the
antennas are not removable/replaceable.

It has worked like a charm. I even rely on it for my Boom alarm.

[slim] how do i connect a PS3 to Transporter for stereo music and movies

2009-01-22 Thread bad.wolf

Hi Does anyone know how to set my PS3 to do the following:

I have a PS3 which is mostly connected to my av amp optically to view
movies or play games.
But I have a Slim Devices Transporter music server - which has a very
good DAC built into it.
What I want to do is play my existing cd’s on the PC3 connected
optically to the Transporter as an external DAC, this then is connected
to my Cyrus stereo amp.

What settings do I need on the PS3 to do this (this would be the same
as any ext DAC used with the Playstaion) also I would like to play
movies occasionally like this in stereo as well as music
Regards
Jez

He is saying to plug the SBR into the wired interface on the computer.
Using the bridging feature on the computer the SBR will then be able to
access the rest of the network through the computers wireless G
interface.

Note: This doesn't mean I necessarily agree with this scenario. I
have all of my SBR's wired so I have no frame of reference on the
wireless performance.

Re: [slim] Hole in the top of remote

2009-01-22 Thread pichonCalavera

Well I actually would like a Squeezebox Portable:

Take the controller as a basis, make it smaller, put some buttons on
the side to save space, keep the same UI, keep the memory card so the
capacity can be upgradable, make it a top notch SQ headphone out, same
audio codec support as the other Squeezeboxes, keep the streaming
playback, install Squeezecenter inside the Portable, ability to sync
with other Squeezecenter instances over Wifi so I can choose and copy
my music easily to my Portable, and use the transcoding abilities of
Squeezecenter so that I could have a choice of transcoding my FLAC
music library in my main server to MP3 or OGG on my Portable (and this
way I eliminate the need to have duplicates of the music I want in my
portable).

Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs. AirTunes Setup

2009-01-22 Thread dsdreamer

Sound quality from analog outputs: Squeezebox is better
Sound quality from digital outputs: I can't tell the difference
Ease of set-up and use: Apple wins: most people already know iTunes
Flexibility: Squeeze wins, highly tunable in so many ways
Supported file formats: Squeeze does more, except in the case of DRM'ed
music.
Serves multiple concurrent users: Only with Squeezecenter
Cost: Airport express is only $99 per node, and is functionally similar
to a SB Receiver at $150 ($135 right now in the sale). A two node
solution need only cost $99 x 2 plus $239 for an 8GB iPod Touch(tm).

I think there is still strong value in the SlimDevices product line,
particularly if analog sound quality is a key driver for you.
Furhermore, there is a whole line of products to fit different usage
models from the Boom at one end to the Transporter at the other.

[slim] Rumors of streaming MP3 to other players...Is it true?

It seems that xmms and winamp both connect to the ...:9000/stream.mp3

The players show up in the Web Interface. There is no output.

My entire collection is flac. Do I need mp3's?

Is there some setting I'm missing?

I don't have any immediate plans to use it, I just have to know how to

Slim Devices / Logitech never, ever, comment on future products.

I fail to see the attraction of overpriced self contained music
servers as I've been using free PCs since my first SB1.
Almost any PC has enough power to run SqueezeCenter.

I've only used two server PCs for music in 5 years or so, but each was
just laying arround unused in my basement -- too slow to use for

unpretentious tube amp which drives full range, single driver speakers.

I'm currently doing some fixing including this one. The problem is
related to UTF-8 encoding. File paths are stored UTF-8 encoded in the
database. International character are stored using 16 bytes (2 hex
digits). Example: Björk is stored as Bj%C3%B6rk. ACC currently doesn't
handle this.
I'll look into it but if anyone knows if mysql provides a native
