Re: [slim] Pandora vs. Slacker vs. Last.fm vs. Genius

2009-02-09 Thread marklings

Hi,
I listen to LastFM a lot and to Pandora from time to time.
Stragely my opinion would be the opposite of yours. I find LastFM
repeats too much after a while. Also they really overweight period vs.
musical characteristics
I found Pandora more usefule to discover new stuff.
But then again I use LastFM way more than Pandora
Could it be that when you use a radio service a lot in the end they all
show similar, understandably, limitations ?

Cheers, Mark.

EyeRonik1;394436 Wrote:
 Hi gang,

I listen to all of these, and here are my comparisons:

Pandora - My favorite, but it has some quirks. It has a huge supply of
artists and generally creates a nice station from a suggestion. Here
 are the quirks though:
 - Limited supply of music per station. Once I get it tuned if I listen
to a station a lot I get a lot of repeats.
 - Prioritizes era over similarity. For example, when I seed Neil
Young I get a ton of 1970's artists such as Jimi and The Who by
default. This is crazy and wrong - I want music that sounds like Neil
Young, not music on the radio at the time his biggest hits were
popular. He has had about 20 albums since then. This is a major failing
of Pandora and contrary to their story.
 - A Jack Johnson seed creates a station filled with improvisational
jazz, even after killing every instance of it. When I want Chick Corea,
I'll create a station for him.

Slacker - As broad coverage as Pandora, and it creates very different
stations from the same seeds. It doesn't have the era bug and the
variety is broader and I'm listening to Slacker more and more.
The downside - it has audio ads in the stream. They are often mixed to
be louder than the music and it's disturbing. I'd listen more to it if
they just mixed down the volume of the ads.

 Last.FM - I listen occasionally but when I do it's great. I have the
free account so I only listen to the Recommended station but it's
usually quite good, better than the Quickmix on Pandora. I scrobble
both iTunes and my iPods, and Squeezecenter so it knows me pretty
 well.

Genius - When I'm listening to iTunes I usually use Genius instead of
Party Shuffle now. It has the same era bug as Pandora - when I select
any classic rock song I only get classic rock suggested, but it's often
much better than that. It's good for a more eclectic mix when using
 non-classic rock songs.

I never got MusicIP to work.

 How do others feel?

2009-02-09 Thread Michael Herger
Yeah, start/stop sounds like the absolute, bare minimum we need. It's already
working here (and no, this is no code worth publishing yet). One advantage of
the WHS console over eg. the task icon is that it's run using the privileges
you need to start/stop services.

It makes little sense to go
to the trouble of creating an installer that relieves users of using
Terminal Services for the install, and then making them use TS for the
more everyday task of installing and uninstalling plugins.

FWIW: I'm updating SC much more often than I install plugins.

It works that way because the Transported just believes it is a
standard 2-channel FLAC which it is decoding to PCM and sending to the
digital outputs, whatever is connected to those outputs is handling the
5.1.

If the file is *actually* a 5.1 FLAC then yes there is going to be
problems. It's something that should probably be handled more
gracefully, but not something that can be completely fixed as surround
isn't supported.

Masterpop, raising a bug in Bugzilla (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/) is

Thanks guys - that's given me a few things to look into.

Currently trying a scan without AVG running - see how that goes.

I'll do some temperature checking later. It's an old Compaq Deskpro
machine, although all the media is on a Buffalo NAS drive. Anyone know
whether this version thrashes the machine and more on a scan? The CPU
is at a steady 15% in the Task Manager, peaking at around 50% every so
often. Can't speak for the HDD though. I'll give it a good hoover,
since it probably needs it.

Like I say, I had the power cycling issue with Squeezecenter two
releases ago (although it could have coincided with Wireless changes),
and it fixed itself with the last release. I'll run NetStumbler -
thanks for the heads up on that - and get it plugged in via a wired
connection. Everything else running wirelessly seems to be OK,
although I don't pretend to know much about all that.

Tried it a couple of times and it got confused with permissions, so I

I'd recommend the 'Advanced Admin Console' WHS Add-In.
It installs as an extra tab and has shortcuts for 'My Computer',

Also lets you add your own shortcuts.

For SC install, I go in through the Console, navigate to the correct

For restarting the Service, Console AAC Tab Admin Tools Services.

could you please elaborate on your last statement (this issue should

As I said in an earlier comment we've added code to try harder to bring SC up.
If the default 9000 (or whatever SC is configured to use) is in use by another
application (eg. Twonky), it will automatically use a different port. We're
probing 9000-9010, 9100, 8000 and 1. It's an arbitrary selection, but it's
unlikely any system will be using all of these already. SC should successfully
start in most of these cases. But we'd still need some means to tell the user
what port it's actually using. Doesn't matter if you're accessing it using the
tray icon, but on WHS this is a different story. Therefore a link to SC would
come in handy.

Up until a few days ago SC would simply quit with an error if its port was
being used by some other app.

However, I'm not sure about what I should do : I'm not familiar with

This is probably not the original DVD-A bitstream that's being played.
The problem is I think he has extracted to 24-bit, 6-channel PCM, then
compressed that to FLAC. This will not play because we don't support
more than 2 channel audio.

When DTS/AC3 is being passed through to an A/V receiver, the trick is
that it's encapsulated in what _looks like_ 2 channel audio, but it is
NOT PCM until it gets decoded by the A/V receiver.

If anyone can advise the correct way to rip a DVD-A please chime in...

How did you reach that conclusion? That's exactly what would happen if
it was overheating.

It sounds from a previous post like it's already heavily loaded. You
can run SC on some low-spec hardware, but it will perform a lot better
if the hardware isn't overly encumbered with other things. I've run SC
7 on an AMD Duron 1.2 GHz with 256 MB of RAM, it did fine. However it
was running Ubuntu Linux, which is much more efficient than Windows and
doesn't have a huge amount of background processes running.

There are a fair amount of temperature loggers. I seem to recall
SpeedFan was very good: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Get the
temp graph going, then run a scan and see what it reports.

It depends what processor you're using, but anything above 50 C is bad,
anything above about 60 C may cause alarms and your CPU may shutdown to
protect itself if it goes up past 70 - 75 C. BTW 75 C = 167 F!

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server

2009-02-09 Thread c3p00

Nice to see slimserver getting packaged as a whs add-in. The one thing
I'd like to see is integration with the whs LightsOut add-in. For those
who don't know, lightsout is an power management plugin that puts whs
into sleepmode whenever it's not in use. Unfortunately it's a little
bit stupid when it comes to clients that doesn't run windows. So my
squeezebox can easily wake up whs, but it will go to sleep again after
a set time.

If slimserver could stop the lightout service when the player is on, I
think that would rectify the problem. Another solution would be to
start a dummy service, like SlimserverRunningService, that the
lightsout plugin can check for (this functionality is already in the
plugin).

Any solution that would keep whs running when my player is on would be
great!

[slim] SqueezeBox3 performance problems

2009-02-09 Thread amino

I've had my SqueezeBox3 for two and half years now and I absolutely love
it. The only thing I've always wished was a little bit better is the
performance. I'm talking about the speed when I scroll through menus,
artist and song lists and so on. However this didn't stop me from
buying a SqueezeBox Boom a few weeks ago and the first thing I notice
is that it is extremely fast in this aspect, exactly the way I want
it.

So why is it different? Well, I checked the CPU and it is the same.
Both are connected to my wireless network at home, and my SqueezeBox3
is only about 1 meter away from the router at the moment with 92%
signal quality, while the Boom is on a different floor with 87% signal
quality at the moment. What other factors are there affecting the
performance? The problem is that it is freezing for a few tenths of a
second every now and then when I'm scrolling and it doesn't help with a
different remote either. Any clues?

By the way the software version in my SqueezeBox3 is 123 and in Boom it
is 43.

No, that's the SC service (if SC is configured to run as a service). The

Standard operations work fine but I would like to add the following

Thanks for that Mark, downloading Speedfan now. I got to the (probably
illogical) conclusion, since the processor didn't really seem to be
under any significant load at the time and the stopping of the beeps
seemed instant when scanning stopped (which in retrospect could be a
cooling effect, I just hadn't figured on it being that quick).
Granted, strange things happened when it all went wrong, but it was all
so strange I couldn't get task manager up to check any loads.

It always seemed to be stalling at the same point too (an ASF file in a
tidyup folder). I moved that folder out the way today, and a scan went
through without any problems at all. Mind you, that could just be
coincidence.

The machine is a 2.66GHz, but only 512mb RAM on board. Its only other
task is running as a server for MyMovies (DVD jukebox software). All
media files are stored on NAS drives.

Thanks again - much appreciated.

Granted, strange things happened when it all went wrong, but it was all

Processors cool down really quickly when the load is removed because
the fan has been turned up to maximum.

The SC scan process is fairly CPU intensive, but it occurs in several
stages. The first stage accesses the discs, and that causes moderate
CPU load and high I/O load (you'll see your disc access light go
crazy). The second stage is some sort of database assimilation stage,
which puts a heavy load on the CPU. Subsequent stages are also CPU
intensive (merge various artists, artwork scan, database optimization)
but are usually shorter except for the artwork scan.

It always seemed to be stalling at the same point too (an ASF file in a
tidyup folder). I moved that folder out the way today, and a scan went

It could be it was stuck in a loop.

That should be fine for SC if you're running Windows XP. I did that
for a while with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4. It won't do for Vista, but I'm
not even sure if Vista itself can run on 512 MB.

That said, the 2.66 GHz processor could be an infamous Pentium 4
Prescott (aka P4D) which ran very, very hot.

Thanks again for taking the time to give information. According to
HWInfo it's a Northwood. To be honest, I hadn't really looked at the
spec much, since I was given the machine, and it replaced an old Compaq
iPaq desktop that was really struggling.

I'm currently doing a scan with Speedfan running (it's still on
Directory Scan and all seems well). However, I haven't really looked
around Speedfan yet, and the CPU is reading -128C, which I'm guessing
is not right (half way to absolute zero is probably a little
excessive!). All other temperatures reading fine though (23-36C).
I'll keep an eye on it for when it gets to the meatier processing.

Off to download netstumbler to see if I can't get the wireless thing
sorted. The neighbours are new, and I'm guessing they're running a
wireless network, plus probably some cordless phones, TV senders and -
hey - flying a model aircraft round the room just to monkey with my
signal some...

will run hot but not as bad as Prescott. See

My P4C 2.8 had plenty of power to run SC but it did get very hot under

Err, yeah, that doesn't sound right! I'm pretty sure you'd know if you
were using liquid nitrogen cooling. ;-)

The correct reading is usually contained in the data, it's a matter of
figuring out which one is right and assigning that to the CPU reading.
However it sounds like your original problem has gone away - fingers

I agree most maintainance will still be done through the browser, and ,

Hence the eventual possibility of including difficult addins like

Hum, it is possible the Boom is using the CLI and caching some

displayed the entire play list on the screen at once (well, what would
fit - I scrolled the rest off on as needed).

That would be interesting to know if the Boom is caching the play list,
anyone know for sure?

As for your SB3 - you will have to ask your self if speeding up the
display for the SB3 is worth it. That is, it is possible your server is
the limiting factor. For instance, a duel core server may make a
difference. Recall, just about every thing you do on the remote goes
through the server first (I think the pause key is processed both
locally and on the server). Hence, the reason SB's can be easily
control remotly.

Maybe there will be a slightly cheaper version with a Sqeezish Case but
I think this thing is quite what we were talking about.

I have been using iPeng for a few weeks now. Love what you have done
with this app. I am also interested in figuring out the IRBlaster
volume up issue. Felix is the author of the plugin. It works fine for
me from both the SBC and the web interface, but not from iPeng.

 Thanks.

I wrote a plugin to deal with the volume changes that SC reports and
then has my Amp respond accordingly. It works fine with iPeng although
I had to discard many of the messages that iPeng was sending. I put a
delay on the volume messages for 1/2 second and only process the last
message that comes after the 1/2 second delay.

# kill any volume changes that may be going on within the timer
Slim::Utils::Timers::killTimers( $client, \handleVolChanges);
# delay the volume changes by .5 second to give the AVP time to
catch
up
Slim::Utils::Timers::setTimer( $client, (Time::HiRes::time() +
.5),
\handleVolChanges);

This works great if you don't mind the slight pause.

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server

I'd definitely like to see a way to start the service from the console.
After installing (both from the .exe and the new .msi) Squeezecenter
loads onto my server, but doesn't seem to start. If I go into service
I can start it up. Any ideas if I'm missing a step? I didn't think you
needed to reboot after installing.

Re: [slim] Adding extra functionality to the Harmony remote

2009-02-09 Thread cooppw02

You'll probably have to program a sequence to do this using the Harmony
software. Under the activity you set up for Squeezebox listening, go
to Customize Buttons Additional Buttons Add Sequence. I think the
maximum length that a sequence can be is 5 commands, so this may not
work too well if it takes more than 5 button presses to do whatever
you're to program.

I should probably clarify. VolumeDown works fine. The problem is
VolumeUp. I am thinking it has to do with the fact that I have the SB3
volume fixed at 100% (I don't want the SB3 attenuating the volume).
Hence there is really no way to trigger VolumeUp. On the SBC and in
the web interface, even though Volume slider bar shows 100%, I can
still select VolumeUp and it sends the the command via IRBlaster to my
PreAmp. The solution may be as simple as providing a way on the screen
to continue to send VolumeUp even though the slider on iPeng is 100%
full.

If anyone can advise the correct way to rip a DVD-A please chime in...

Ignoring any copy protection issues, I don't think it can be done in a
way that would make sense to a Squeezebox, Transporter or any receiver
to which one is connected. WAV and FLAC won't work and I can't imagine
one of the players knowing what to do with an MLP stream. I'd also be a
bit surprised if the average decoder would handle MLP or 5.1 PCM sent
via standard coax or optical, assuming it's even possible to do so.

Are there any non-computer-based components out there that know what to
do with a multichannel FLAC? Might be interesting to see if such a
beast would ignore DVD-A watermarking.

Unfortunately, the correct way to rip a DVD-A remains to hope it also
has a DTS track or settle for AC-3 if it doesn't.

Didn't we have this before? I implemented this in the iPeng plugin (not

Not sure as I did not use the plugin.

I guess I am thinking the UI part is all that is needed. I just tested
the fact that I can lower the volume by sliding the volume control to
the left and then if I slide it back to right before it has a chance to
reset the UI in the iPeng to show the volume at 100%, I can actually
start to increase the volume back some. Of course this does not allow
me to increase the volume above where I started from originally, but I
think it proves that from iPeng I can control the volume in both
directions through the IRBlaster. Hence why I think the enhancement
needed for IRBlaster users is just a way in the UI to still increase
the volume even though the SB3 thinks the volume is 100%.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks.

fantastic but was nowhere near plug and play for consumers. And I
learned that in general, SlimServer runs much more efficiently on Linux
machines, which all but eliminates my Windows NAS choices. In short, I
have no idea what to buy and your company is not helping me at all.

There is a very viable solution available. I purchased a NetGear
ReadyNas Pro which is Linux based box with SqueezeCenter pre installed.
NetGear acquired Infranet.

I’m not sure where you’re getting your information from, but I was
playing my Transporter in about 15 minutes after booting up the NAS.
I’ve never used or had seen Linux, which isn’t saying much because you
don’t really need to know anything about Linux to run SqueezeCenter and
SqueezeNetwork or to use the NAS for storage.

I control the NAS from a Dell Windows Vista box through a slick http
interface. I was so pleased by how the Transporter and NAS performed
together, I scored a Duet receiver for the basement system.

If you are nervous or uncomfortable configuring the RAID (which you’d
have to do with a Windows box as well) Eaegis.com, an authorized
NetGear reseller will pre-configure it for you.

With 5T of storage in the RAID I have plenty of room for my FLAC’s and
the thing has performed flawlessly.

Sorry my fault, I took the information first from mind and the german
wikipedia entry which do not note the 802.11b only for Japan. English
link was added later and not completly crossread by me.

So also in Japan you can only have 3 non overlapping 802.11g networks.

I just checked out what I can see from my laptop.
I see nine WiFi access points, mine and six others. Five of them use
Channel 6. Two use 11, one used 5, one used 1

There are no free channels. One is a neighbor across the circle from me,
probably 100 meters away. Another is down the street, more like 400
meters away. One that is fairly weak is more like 500 meters away.

Two of them are still named linksys with no encryption. One still
named Netgear.
