Re: [slim] Can I use a SB receiver as a wireless bridge?
Thank you all for your help. I am now happy that the SB does what I would like in terms on network connectivity. My only concern now is that of reliability in terms of streaming wirelessly. This seems to be one of the main issues that people have. I already have devices located near to where I would place SBRs, that connect perfectly well wirelessly to my network. However I am told that this is no garauntee that the SBRs will function reliably. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'm not going to be wasting my money going down the SB route. If SD came out with an "official" iPhone/iTouch App (not that I have anything against iPeng) that could stream from SC and be Rhapsody-compliant, I'd be willing to make my first Apple purchase and be a very happy camper. The Ibiza Rumble may fit this bill to some extent, but I'd prefer to stream through SC -- and there are a few Apps, like the daily NYT crossword, that I would enjoy playing with on the Apple product. Virtually all of my SC library is apple lossless files ripped and tagged w/iTunes. SC reads these fine. I still use iTunes to load my ipods. I just switched to ripping with DB Poweramp and it can rip to apple lossless files. Much more control of the rip, tagging and artwork. To use SC instead of iTunes, uncheck iTunes in the plugins tab and in basic settings aim SC to your iTunes library, in my system it looks like this M:\iTunes\iTunes Music, you can search google and find a program that converts itunes playlists to m3u playlists and aim SC at those, on my system C:\SlimPlaylists. Since memory, drives, and microprocessors are so cheap, you can find a box with great capacity and performance for very little money, compared to what all of us spent on PCs not that long ago I have an eee box with Win XP, and an external drive, and performance is excellent. Re: [slim] Can I use a SB receiver as a wireless bridge?
Directly from the SB Classic Users Guide Using Squeezebox as a Wireless Bridge Squeezebox Wireless has both 802.11g and ethernet connections. You can easily connect non-wireless devices (such as a TiVo, PlayStation, XBox, or a home theatre PC) to your wireless network. To set up Squeezebox as a wireless bridge: 1. Plug the device that you want to connect to your wireless network into the ethernet port on the back of Squeezebox using an ethernet crossover cable. You can purchase a crossover cable at most retail computer stores. 2. Press and hold the LEFT arrow on the remote for five seconds to enter the Squeezebox setup screens. 3. Press UP to scroll to the Set Up Networking selection and press RIGHT. 4. Go through the network setup screens, choosing to connect to a wireless network and then select your region. 5. You should be presented with the option to turn on wireless bridging. Select Yes and then press RIGHT. 6. Continue pressing RIGHT to finish setting up your wireless connection. At the end, your Squeezebox will be acting as a wireless bridge. -- jdbaker SB3/Parasound C2/A51/PSB CHS60's/CHS40/Triad Gold Dipole Inwall Surrounds/Triad Inwall Silver Sub. They've already got the engine working for their own streaming app. So... there'd need to be some sort of API, plus track identification. No idea what they already use. As for transitioning your iTunes library from OSX to Windows it's a pretty straight forward process. - copy the entire "iTunes" folder from Mac to Windows (most likely via your network, but even via a hard drive or thumb drive should work as long as it's formatted in FAT32 so the Mac can write to it and Windows can read from it). - once it's copied to your Windows machine, rename the "iTunes Library" file in your "iTunes" folder to "iTunes Library.itl" (iTunes on Windows needs the extension, it works with or without it on the Mac). The names of the other files don't matter, and the files themselves will be re-created if needed. - launch iTunes while holding down the "shift" key (the "option" key on the Mac) and then click the "Choose Library ..." button. - navigate to the location of your iTunes library, and select it for your default iTunes Library (you won't need to re-do this step later). - note: iTunes will go through a re-building step once the library is opened. If your library is sizable this could take a while. But once finished you should have all your playlists, music, etc. intact. Good luck, - duano! ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hi all, As per the title really. Just want to know if I can connect another device to my network using a SB receiver. I'm contemplating getting a Duet and an additional receiver. One of the receivers will be attached to an amp that is Network enabled, but only if hardwired. If I could connect the Amp to my network using the SB receiver that would be great. Re your neighbor's subnet addressing, you should be able to get that by looking at the first three digits of the IP address on your computer when you connect wirelessly to his/her router. You can do this via the "ipconfig" command in a Windows Command Prompt (aka DOS) window. Or you can ask your neighbor. Your wireless network will be running off of router2. You connect router1 to the wireless network by wiring it to router2, using the LAN ports, not the WAN ports, as described in Jim's instructions: -* Choose a separate subnet for your own network, such as 192.168.5/255.255.255.0. * Assign 192.168.5.1 as the IP address for the LAN (not WAN) side of router1. * Configure the DHCP server on router1 with a pool of addresses such as 192.168.5.10 - 192.168.5.30. * Connect router2 using wired ethernet from one of its _LAN_ ports to a LAN port on router1. * Assign a static IP address of 192.168.5.2 to router2.- -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62543 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] From OS X to Windows
Old Mac Minis are fine for SC, although I admit that the response to iPeng is slow on mine. I run it on an early-ish one one not much faster than your current G3 (the 800MHz version, to be precise), under OSX 10.4.11 and it can take 10 or 15 seconds for sound to reach the speakers after poking "play". Sometimes it feels as though the music flows along the cables like cool lava... Otherwise there's only a problem if the Mini is running something else that hogs processor/storage, which wouldn't arise in your case, or else my neighbour uses the microwave. No stuttering otherwise, using a bridged ethernet/Airport Extreme (g) connection. Anyway, one of the later, faster PPC versions seems much easier than re-jigging your whole set-up.although even the cheaper of the new Minis would probably work blast the bits out like a pyroclastic flow. Re: [slim] MusicIP development... stalled???
This intrigues me. A few years ago I wrote playlisting software that was very similar to music-ip, but used a very different approach to build playlists- It was a crowd sourcing web-app, that kept a database of every song users had in their library. It analyzed the BPM and a few other things- but it used crowd based tags (and a Bayesian algorithm to make it work for each user), and it created playlists based on certain criteria: You could pick a mood, or pick a song and make playlists that were similar, different, same tempo, different tempos, and so on. I never released the client, which is based on the .net framework, and the software only creates winamp playlist files, but maybe this is something the squeezebox community would be interested in ressurecting. I couldn't tell you if it would ever do as well as music ip- but I've used a similar technology for a photos site to find similar photos, and I've liked it (http://www.stockphox.com). In the end it would depend on the users to really push functionality (tagging), but it could turn into a fun community-type site. If the SBR is connected via a wired connection, the SBC can connect to it instead of a router. It can't do this if the SBR is wireless, so if you set up your SBR wireless, you can factory reset it to make it use the wired connection. Re: [slim] Squeezebox connectivity - a better way of doing it?
Yeah, understood... What I was meaning was if the instructions to/from the remote were passed through the receiver, and not via the router, then the receiver could be connected to the router either wirelessly or wired. This would mean that the remote would only need to have a range big enough to connect to the receiver - which would typically be in the same room as the remote you were using. The problem I have, is that my router is in the lounge. We have an old Victorian house with thick brick internal walls. If I wanted a receiver in the bedroom or kitchen, the remote would not have the ability to wirelessly connect to the router (in the lounge rememeber). If the remote connected to the receiver, then I could connect the receiver to the network using a network cable and power adapters (for example). This would greatly increase the flexibility of the system IMO. The data to/from the remote would pass through the receiver, then router, then the server software. Rather than going directly via the router and then server software -- PugRallye PugRallye's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17668 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62631 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Any new toys coming out from SD
I think some of the problem is that many of the third party devices won't be bought by many customers because they lack the Logitech branding or "seal of approval". You see a lot of queries such as "what is the best NAS?" or "what is the best router?" etc. I think that SD could steal a leaf from Sonos's book (but using open not proprietary software) and produce their own NAS and wi-fi networking equipment. That way people unsure of setting up wi-fi networks or NAS devices could buy something that may not be "the best", but is at least good enough for SD / Logitech to put their name on and to back with their support systems. This could be rebadged Netgear, Linksys (or whoever) stuff, maybe with cosmetic enhancements, a modified firmware and tweaked to maximise compatibility with other SD equipment. Prime candidates would be: - SqueezeNas - hardware server pre-loaded with monster hard disk and the latest SqueezeCenter - SqueezeNet - WAP or router designed to run Squeezeboxes on a dedicated wi-fi network. I would be less concerned about a self-contained amplified Receiver. Most people are used to plugging new hardware into the Aux socket of an existing hi-fi. However SD could produce a -matching- amp and/or speakers though. Maybe a T-amp and sensitive speakers or powered speakers. Many of us with wives understand the importance of good looking and matching equipment in garnering sales. A rich but very tech un-savvy friend of mine bought Sonos not because of any technical superiority, but simply because he could buy it all from one place, it all looked cosmetically similar and it all worked together out of the box. He didn't need a server (he has no CDs - ex-wife has them all!) he just bought it for use with Napster. He is very happy. When I told him the likely setup he would have needed to assemble for a SqueezeBox arrangement he was not enthusiastic - even though it would have saved him a thousand or two. There are lots of people out there like him, and not all of them are rich enough to afford Sonos gear. -- TheLastMan Matt SB Duet (Controller + two receivers) Synology Diskstation 107+ with FW 2.0-0731 SqueezeCenter 7.3.2 on Synology Package Manager Naim 42/110 amp, B&W CM2 speakers in living room. Re: [slim] From OS X to Windows
If it's just for running SC, then a basic windows PC is probably the best bang for your buck you can get. You should be able to find a clearance special or something that fits your needs. I don't think there is a difference between iTunes on Windows or Mac, but having never used it I can't say for sure. using VLC isn't going to be a problem, you can use any combination of OS for the client or server. -- funkstar my collection: *1*x boom *2*x controller, *1*x receiver *2*x sb3 (sliver/black, *1*x sb2 wired (silver), *1*x sb (black) *1*x slimp3 (with rear shield) interested in any others if you have them! funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62627 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] From OS X to Windows
My old G3 (600 MHz PPC) is running out of steam and I think to buy a PC running Windows XP (2,5GHz Intel Core Duo 2) to replace it. I would loke to buy a Mac but a PC is about third the price and I intend to use it only as a music server. Anyone has experience switching their SqueezeCenter from OS X to Windows? My mini-LAN is OS X only (3 computers including the server). Im controlling the SC server from another computer via VNC - is is easy to control a Windows server from a Mac? Is transition from iTunes OS X to iTunes Windows simple? Thanks! [slim] Pandora does not play
After months of enjoyment, Pandora has suddenly stopped playing at my SB receiver. From the controller I can still select Pandora, see my stations and even say "Play this station". In Now Playing I can see the song selected along with the time and progress bar moving along yet I have no sound. Internet radio and plain old stuff from my music library play just fine. [slim] Controlling Squeeze Box using a Windows Mobile 6 Mobile Phone
Hi I've just aquired a HTC Touch Pro mobile phone which runs the Windows Mobile 6 operating system. I was hoping that I could use this device to control my SqueezeBox. It would seem on the surface that I have several options: 1. Use a Web browser. The phone has WiFi and a 480x640 VGA screen. 2. Some kind of native application that uses the Sqeezecentre's CLI. 2. SqueezePlay. Not sure if this is even possible. I've tried the web browser method and find that with both mobile Opera and windows explorer the pages aren't rendered properly (things get drawn on top of other things and links don't work) and it's almost impossible to use. I've tried the default skin, handheld and Nokia770. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong with the web browsers, are there any known issues with Squeeze Centre and mobile Opera? Any suggestions about other methods of controlling my squeezebox with my phone would be most welcome.
