[slim] Looking for test tones

2009-10-12 Thread sjonnie

Hi Folks,

My Transporter seems to be out of balance. The left channel sounds much
louder at any volume setting.
To test this I need a set of test sounds that enables me to check the
channel balance.
If you know a place to download such (I'm also on Usenet) please let me
know.

Thank you in advance.

Please make sure you don't have any playlist, cue sheet etc. pointing to that

Re: [slim] Why sqeezebox

2009-10-12 Thread DigitalMitch

iPhone's advice is sound. I didn't think for the future but I'm really
glad I happened on Squeezebox.

My requirements have changed and Squeezebox keeps meeting them

start: replace iPod plugged into stereo, with remote control and
visibility of now playing
then: multi-room synchronous playing
then: CD quality streaming
then: scrolling and selecting by albumart
next: different music in different rooms

Alongside this, other systems do the same things but do they acheive
the same quality? areas to consider are:-

file range: range of codecs supported
audio path: choice of DSP/DAC and amplifier/speakers (if fitted)
longevity: strength of brand and commitment and abilitt to add in x
years time.
flexibility, adaptability: frequency of software upgrades
community: alternate support and influence
source: bespoke server, web based or pc
music: your own and/or internet radio

Interestingly your links show a NAS and a streaming system - there is
no suggestion that the NAS could run the streaming software. Logitech
through the acquisition fo SlimDevices have years of experience in this
field supported by a large, active and vocal community. There are many
new entrants into this space, only time will tell how many the market
can support and how many will endure.

Research and then go for it - streaming has massively improved my
access to enjoyment of my collection.

Re: [slim] Why sqeezebox

2009-10-12 Thread toby10

The more competion the better for all! :)

That said, the swiss army knife approach to media streaming (video,
pics, music, etc..) is certainly a popular alternative. Heck, for very
simplistic all in one streaming you could just use a PS3 or similar
device for casual use. But such all in one approaches are usually
lacking in features functions compared to dedicated devices like the
SB players are to music or a NMT (Network Media Tank) device is to
video.

Think of it this way: We all have those multi-tool devices in our
tool box (screw driver, saw, knife, scissors, tweezers, etc... all in
one) and they are handy for casual use. But would you use this for a
serious job? Do professional contractors have these in there tool
belts? Not likely. Serious jobs require serious and task specific
tools. I'm casual about my video streaming so I just use a PS3.
If/when I get serious about video streaming I'll look into a dedicated
device to do so. I'm not so casual about my music streaming (my
library, Music Services, Internet Radio) so I have chosen a serious,
dedicated device to do so. Hello SqueezeBox. :)

As suggested, you really must compare features, benefits, flexibility,
codec support, etc... to your needs.

 Thanks again.
I can see how one would take it that way. But I think it's often
(usually?) the case that the developers need more complete information
to replicate the bug, because replication is usually the first step in
debugging. Given the heterogeneous combinations of OSs, networks, etc
detailed information about the environment in which the bug occurs is
essential.

They could go through that dialog on the forum, but putting it in the
official bug database (bugs.slimdevices.com) ensures that the report
won't simply get lost in the forums.

IMO, there needs to be some sort of extension to the search section so
that a new user, attempting to search for an answer before posting, gets
posts that are appropriate but that match the no-old terminology.
Maybe a checkbox, when set on, words matching a dictionary lookup of
new terms gets the old terms added as well - plus a what's this all
about? link with a page listing new/old.
Likely a transitional issue as posts with the new terms accumulate -
but a potential issue for newbs now.

Re: [slim] Replaygain: Strange mp3 tag behaviour

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

If you have APE and MP3 tags with the same name, how do you read them -
in the sense of which one overrides the other?
Every tag reading/writing app (including squeezebox) seems to have a
different order.
So, you get mysterious tag values.
If you use mp3tag, there's a way to screen out all APE tags (or, I
-think- all MP3 tags) in favor of the other. Look in the wiki for a
how-to.
Note that, once you've setup mp3tag to do this, the operation is as
simple as open folder / select all / save. So it's pretty quick and
painless

Re: [slim] Replaygain: Strange mp3 tag behaviour

2009-10-12 Thread andyg

If you still have a file that gives you the wrong value, please file a
bug and attach the file.

There is one case where gain values can be added together, and that is
if you have iTunes SoundCheck data and an RVAD or RVA2 tag.

The basics are that if you have a REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN tag (in either
ID3v2 or APE) it will be used as-is. If not, we look for RVAD or RVA2
and take that value. Then we look for iTunes SoundCheck data in a
comment tag, if found this is added to the value from RVAD/RVA2 if any
(we do this because that's what iTunes does). LAME tag data is not
used.

So for best results, you simply need to run your files through Foobar
or another app that writes a set of 4 REPLAYGAIN gain and peak tags.

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-12 Thread DotSystem

Once a large number of bugs exist, a strategy can be used (or not) to
resolve them unless resources exist to fix them all within a reasonable
amount of time. It could be FIFO, ascending level of effort, squeaky
wheel/vote, product centric (e.g.,fix all reported Duet issues) or
focused on core functionality/features. I have listed these approaches
in the reverse order of how I believe they impact customer perception of
the software. A weighted approach could be taken such as 80% core
functionality/ 20% low level of effort.

If a bug sits unresolved long enough, it can be rationalized as
unneccessary to fix because users have lived so long with it. When
debugging a new release, goals can be set such as 70% of new bugs
resolved prior to release or 100% of critical bugs resolved prior to
release. If the 70% resolved are easy bugs or the critcal bugs are
mis-characterised, well...

Regression testing helps discover when fixing a bug has side effects.
When a fix to a bug gives rise to another, the bug count does not
diminish.

At least you didn't say configuring a Cicso router

to the OP, as others have said, the SqueezeBox philosophy was
self-defined with they were called slim devices in that the boxes did
one thing, and did it well.

None of the Squeezeboxen are NAS, they don't store stuff. They assume
you have a computer that stores stuff anyway.

For all of the folks who have been using SqueezeBoxen for years, this is
true. And nearly all of us have found that SqueezeBoxen are herd
animals, you can't just have one, one per room is not unusual.

Its about music. Making music easy to listen to.

No one from Logitech will ever talk about future products, but I expect
that at some time, they will be forced into doing video products. I am
happy with their current focus on music.

I had one and had problems with SBs, so I sent it back.

The device is not really that 'configurable', it's more of a plug and

Are any of these shortcuts to mapped network drives or are they all

[slim] Is the Squeezebox Classic discontinued?

2009-10-12 Thread dip

The Squeezebox Classic is neither shown in the product comparison table
on www.logitechsqueezebox.com nor on www.logitech.com under Audio-WLAN
music player.

Does that mean that the Classic will be discontinued and replaced by
the Touch? I would really not be happy if this comes true since the
Touch is much more expensive than the Classic (the Classic is available
on amazon for 150 Euro, the Touch is announced for 299 Euro). Presently,
all my Classics are positioned that I cannot reach them from my usual
listening position. So I use the remote and love the huge characters on
the display which can bee recognized from several meters distance. For
me the Touch is therfore really not a replacement for the Classic but
only an additional option.

What do you think. Do we have to start a petition for the Classic?

1. The Classic's price is so low because it is an end of life product
now; earlier it was the same price as the new Touch.
2. The price of the Touch will, like that of almost all mass market
products, go down over time.

[slim] Excessive buffering and tracks that wont play

2009-10-12 Thread RussT

I have a good set-up I think :-). I run a Squeezebox Boom and a Duet
connected to my amplifier. I also have a QNAP Network Attached Storage
device which has Squeezecentre installed and all my music on it. The
music is stored in an iTunes Music folder. I back-up/copy my desktop
iTunes folders once a week to the NAS. I have noticed a couple of
problems however and was wondering if anyone has any pointers.

1) Some of the music does not play. Initially I thought it was DRM
related as it seemed to be only albums I had purchased via iTunes but I
have noticed it with other albums as well which I have ripped from CD's
I own?

2) When playing the radio it interupts and buffers quite regularly. I
have checked the network settings on the Wiki against my ISP's Netgear
router and they seem fine but it still does it?

I would appreciate anyone cleverer than me offer a few words of advice
:-)

Re: [slim] Poll: Do you have a Dual-Band Airport?

2009-10-12 Thread dBerriff

Yes I have dual-band Time Capsule and I have had no problems since
installing it a few weeks ago with a Classic and a Boom.

Of course the TC can be configured. I have tried allocating the bands
manually and just leaving it on automatic and both work. Automatic seems
works best in my house although it then does not make much use of the 5
GHz frequency. The system correctly identifies that 2.4 GHz is best for
our study computer which has an n connection.

Of more concern is tendency of Time Capsules to burn out their power
supplies after 18 months (the capacitors don't like the high
temperatures) - but that is another story.

genre Acid Jazz set and not just albums for the two artists in my
collection that have performed songs with the genre Acid Jazz set.

In SBS, I have set the option Filter genre on album and song level to
Show all albums and songs for an artist (my own English translation of
the option).

Since I do not care much for applying genres to my music or browse by

accordance with your reply, I doubt that this is the intended behaviour.
Am I doing something wrong?

Re: [slim] 7.41rc: working OK with musicIP?

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

Thanks for the fast response!
They're all local to the server.

I think I might have the issue sorted - go to the SBS control panel and
delete all preferences, reboot (not sure that was necessary), again
look for new and changed music.
I'm now up to 30K scanned (of 60).
I was going to wait for a successful scan (which looks to be at least
another few hours) to update.
Interestingly (well, to me...) the first time - the one that failed -
the scanner was just scanning the alphabetically first folder-shortcut.
This time it appears to be interleaving different folders, and it looks
as though the folders chosen for interleaving are from different
physical devices. IMO very cool.
I'll update once I know - but things are looking great.

Re: [slim] SoftSqueeze...???

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

An alternate approach might be to install 'squeezeslave2'
- which is just a stream-to-audio commandline app (which you can
minimize or convert to a service if you want) and then use the web UI to
control it.
You'd need 0.9 or above to work with SCS 7.4x

You could also use moose (check the wiki), which is a windows UI
(faster than the web UI). AFAIK, moose uses squeezeslave2 for audio
output - but controls it directly.
I notice that moose now supports musicIP, so it's time for me to try it
again.

Oh - on 7.3x hardware players and PCs running SS2 synchronize just
fine. They may on 7.4x as well (waiting for an initial scan to complete
so haven't tried much in 7.4 yet)

Re: [slim] Is the Squeezebox Classic discontinued?

2009-10-12 Thread aubuti

As I understand it, production of the SB3 has already stopped. Up until
now Slim Devices and Logitech have had an outstanding record of
supporting older equipment, all the way back to the original SliMP3
player. These legacy players have actually gotten *better* over time
through improvements in the player firmware and server software. It
remains to be seen if this track record will continue, and for how long,
especially considering the big changes to the SB hardware platform that
iPhone mentioned above. I am not hinting at any doomsday for original
SBs -- I simply don't know.

If you really want to ensure personal availability of SB3/Classic, buy
as many as you need now while they are still available. When Logitech
bought Slim Devices I promptly bought another SB, but now I think my
fears were unjustified.

it back in sync with combined 'Living Room, Kitchen'. Instead I just
tapped Kitchen and all 3 devices were then in sync. These were my only
sync changes using iPeng. This is when my problem of losing the sound of
my Master Bedroom SqueezeBox Classic (after turning off Kitchen
SqueezeBox Classic) first appeared.

I think that just choosing only 'Kitchen' in order to sync everything
again eventually caused the sound problem. The strangeness of not being
offered the combination of my other two units made me decide to solve my
problem by using Local 9000 on my computer instead of iPeng.

I am aware of several weird problems which depend on the sequence of
turning on and off synced devices on 7.3.X. This is probably one more
bug that shows in 7.4.

Again, this was just to bring this problem to your attention and
perhaps it would help another user in case he unexpectedly loses the
sound on a device.

I know you are working on a manual (hurry, hurry) which would make
things easier. For instance, what is the function of the large up/down
arrow buttons which show on each device on the device list? I tap them,
I tap and hold, but nothing happens. They appear on those devices that
have set volume. My only device that has adjustable volume is the Master
Bedroom and a volume control appears on that device instead of the
up/down large arrows.

Thanks again

Regards

Thanks for some specifics. No doubt these are bugs and I presume that
bugs have been filed for them in bugs.slimdevices.com. But getting back
to your original point, it still seems way over the top (to me) for
Logitech to do what you suggest, which is to expend significant
resources running *both* SN and MSB because of these bugs, especially
when 2 of the 5 examples work fine on MSB for many users. The time spent
maintaining a parallel service will subtract from the time available
fixing the bugs in the new service.

You might prove for yourself, which bugs are bugs ;)

A normal user shouldn't be forced to file technical bug report forms,
but call the support in case of problems. Unfortunately, the support
lines react very slowly at the moment (or don't react at all). So many
people end up here... IMHO the Logitech employees in this forum are
responsible for the customer reports here and should decide by
themselves if a bug report is useful/necessary or other ways of
providing help are more promising. I'm quite sure that many people here
disagree with my point of view. But did you ever fill in a bug report
for your DVD player or similar devices?

But to get back to my suggestion: The listed problems did't exist with
Squeezenetwork. You're probably right that it's more complicated to
maintain 2 services. On the other hand, no problems would have emerged
for the users of the old platform. But it's just a suggestion and it
would have been even better to provide MySB without bugs. ;)

Prove to myself? Two of the five bugs you mentioned applied to me. I
lost my podcasts, but was able to restore them by copying the
podcast.prefs file from my system backup. Yes, a bug, but easily
resolved. I also had problem with MySB login (actually with 7.4 beta a
couple days before official release), and that was resolved within 24
hours via email to tech support. I don't use Shoutcast, but I looked and
saw that of course you were right, and looked further to see that a
Logitech employee had opened a bug report on it. I don't use RSS or
SkyFM, but I trust you when you say they have bugs. If you don't think
normal users should file bug reports, why do you think normal users
should prove bugs that don't affect them?

The comparison to a DVD player is off the mark because SBs and SC/SBS
are completely different products from DVD players or toasters.
Sometimes I do report bugs for other software products (incl Windows,
Excel, Firefox), although I don't do it very often because in most cases
the message appears to go into a black hole. Normal users are under no
obligation to file bug reports. And they are free to complain as loudly
as they wish. I happen to think that filing a bug report is a more
constructive way to resolve bugs, but I also agree that it's not for
everyone.

{=; Was I required to have an accent? ;=}

I was just repeating what Slim Devices and Logitech have always told
me, they don't comment on future products. So no accents really needed.

But for my personal opinion, Logitech is a large company and if they
see another area to make money they could move into that market. The
issue I see is that there are already two boxes that work Very well and
I can't see how they can sell them at the price point they are using and
make money. IOW, getting into Video in MHO would be like trying to start
another Dell in the current computer market where one is lucky if one
gets to sale at a 2% margin.

So maybe I should have done what you did and typed it twice accenting
it one way the first time and the other the second because to me its
maybe both. One now and the other later!

2009-10-12 Thread sflen

pippin;471309 Wrote:
What I didn't understand were your comments on how you did sync with
 iPeng.Please read my comment again.

OK...background:

Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iPod Touch 3.1.1, iPeng 1.2, SqueezeCenter 7.4

4 Slim Devices - 1 Transporter and 3 SqueezeBox Classics. 3 of these
are always in sync and have been for the past 6 months: Master Bedroom
SqueezeBox, Living Room Transporter, Kitchen SqueezeBox. These three
devices were put in sync by using Local 9000 on my iMac. All three
devices were 'on'.

On iPeng, I went to device list and pushed the edit button top right
corner. I then selected 'Master Bedroom', a red circle with checkmark
appeared, and then I pushed the 'un-sync' button on the bottom of the
screen.

(what follows is by memory as I do not wish to cause the sound problem
again) Master Bedroom was no longer synced. Living Room and Kitchen were
still in sync.

I then selected Master Bedroom and then selected Kitchen. I then pushed
the 'sync' button on the bottom of the screen and now all three devices
were again in sync.

Later I turned the Kitchen SqueezeBox off using my Squeeze remote in
the kitchen. That caused the sound in the Master bedroom to go off in
about 5 minutes but the Master Bedroom was still showing the song that
was playing.

I then turned the Master Bedroom off using the Squeeze remote. I pushed
the Play button on the Squeeze remote and I had sound again. I did the
experiment of turning off the Kitchen 3 times and 3 times I lost the
sound in theMaster Bedroom.

I went to Local 9000 and un-synced everything and then synced the
Master Bedroom to the Living Room. Then I synced the Kitchen to the
combination 'Master Bedroom, Living Room'. Now when I turn off Kitchen,
I do not lose the sound of the Master bedroom.

I think the problem is caused by NOT giving me the option to sync my
Master Bedroom with the combination 'Living Room, Kitchen' which are
already in sync - I have to choose EITHER the Living Room OR the Kitchen
because that is what your program offers. This probably interacts badly
with the SqueezeCenter software.

As I stated before, this is just to let you know of the problem or to
give a heads-up to any user with multiple synced devices who
mysteriously loses sound. As I leave these three devices always synced,
I can always use my computer to change this.

I hope this makes sense as I cannot write anymore!

Regards

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

the scan went fairly quickly - about six and a half hours for ~60K
tracks, including an hour or so to get musicIP info.

[slim] 7.4 web UI speed issue

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

Home / new music takes 3 - 4 minutes. This had taken around 15 sec in
7.3 (~60K tracks). Home / albums takes 1 - 2 minutes before anything
appears.

Am I doing something wrong? Any thoughts on what I might do to get
speed back to 7.3 levels?

I'd been wondering all along how Sqlite might do with a db of a couple
hundred K records. Is this the issue? If so, it means 7.4x isn't
appropriate for collections this size.

[slim] [ANNOUNCE] Vortexbox 0.9 with FLAC mirror

2009-10-12 Thread agillis

I released 0.9 a while ago but I just realized I never posted to this
forum.

There are a lot of cool features in this release many requested by the
SqueezeBox community. This is a quick summary.

* FLAC to mp3 mirroring through the web GUI.
* Backup to USB drive through the web GUI
* Built in Simplify Media server with web GUI configuration
* Better auto cover art. Using both Amazon and Google images.

The most important feature is FLAC mirror. In older versions of
VortexBox we were ripping to both FLAC and mp3 as the CDs were ripped.
This made the ripping process slower and was inflexible.

We now have a menu option FLAC mirror. This allows you to start a
mirroring job whenever you want. After you rip all you CDs to FLAC you
can start a FALC mirror process. This menu allows you to select the
bitrate for mp3 encoding. It then checks for any FLACs that do not have
corresponding mp3s. If there is no mp3 for your FLAC the process creates
it.

FALC mirror also save you time if you want to edit tags. You can edit
the tags on your FLACs and run FLAC mirror again. It will go through and
update all the tags without having to re-encode the mp3s. FLAC mirror
will also mirror cover.jpg and any text files you have in with your
FLACs.

We also added another highly requested feature. USB backup. This allows
you to backup your music collection on a USB drive from the web GUI.
Once you connect a drive you will be prompted to format it. VortexBox
will format the drive NTFS so you can mount it on a windows machine
later if you want. You can then start a process to backup your data.
Once you have backed up all your data the first time only the changed or
new data will be backed up on subsequent backups.

Simplify media server is now built in. This allows you to access your
music from an iPod touch or a PC anywhere in the world.

Re: [slim] 7.4 web UI speed issue

2009-10-12 Thread radish

7.4 uses mysql just like previous versions. Something certainly doesn't
sound right in your setup as my performance is identical to 7.3 as far
as I can tell (FYI, New Music takes about 2 seconds for me).

Can you give us more details of your setup?

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-12 Thread Phil Meyer
Pat, you are once again completely correct. I just can't keep from
typing sometimes especially when somebody doesn't even own and has never
heard the product they are bashing (and they are whining about the price
and they own a Bose Wave Radio for crying out loud).

I totally agree with iPhone's post.

Radio is great for kitchen, bathroom, small bedroom bedside cabinet. It's
better than most bedside alarm clocks with mono (or even stereo) speakers that
I've ever tried.

I was initially sceptical that I would find a use for Radio, since I had a Boom
put to those sort of uses, and thought I'd dislike an iffy mono device. But
really, it's fine. Actually, better than fine - it's great! My wife has
accepted it (via setting up some presets for her) in the kitchen. She finds it
easy to use, small, cute. It fits in much better for the kitchen, and we don't
miss the stereo imaging.

It's benefits are that it is small, cheaper, has a nicer user interface, and
for it's intended purpose, the sound is great.

I have a Transporter in the lounge, adjoining the kitchen which homes a Radio,
which adjoins study which is home to a Boom. All players are synced together.

Obviously, the Transporter on the Hifi system sounds the best, but that's not
the point. The Radio fills the gap when I move through from the Lounge to the
Study via the kitchen

And the Bose Wave Radio is utterly crap for the price. My father-in-law has
one, but I let him off as he's in his 80's. I can't believe someone else
bought one though.

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-12 Thread Phil Meyer
if one gets the battery too, supposedly a big selling point, then is
the $50 saved worth it?
They also get a dedicated volume knob (oppposed to the complicated, confusing
nature of the Booms dedicated volume up/down button AND sometimes the big
navigation knob), and a colour LCD screen, which shows better screen info (eg.
album artwork, nicer weather display, clock, etc).

It's a different kind of product - I wouldn't compare a $50 difference solely
on Mono/Stereo speaker arrangement. Would you pay an extra $50 to wear a
grandfather clock on your wrist because it has a better clock face?

You might prove for yourself, which bugs are bugs ;)
But to get back to my suggestion: The listed problems did't exist with
Squeezenetwork. You're probably right that it's more complicated to
maintain 2 services. On the other hand, no problems would have emerged
for the users of the old platform. But it's just a suggestion and it
would have been even better to provide MySB without bugs. ;)

This strikes me as a more of a business decision rather than a
functional imperative. I don't understand why there needs to be 2
services instead of a single service that interfaces correctly with
different revisons of the server and the client firmwares. There are
tools and techiques available to aid the design challenge. But designing
an agile service may be more upfront work than simply dumping the
previous version.

[slim] 7.4 web ui album art?

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

In 7.4, the web UI doesn't seem to show album art thumbnails in the left
panel when using the default view (or any of the other views I've
tried). Is this functionality just gone?
Album art appears if I click on one of those albums, and in the now
playing window, so the art's in there somewhere.

Any thoughts?
I'm also having speed issues (mentioned in a separate post to make it
easy for someone doing a forum search later) and I'm wondering if this
change was made to make the UI go a bit faster (?)

Re: [slim] 7.4 web UI speed issue

2009-10-12 Thread bobkoure

Sure.
Version: 7.4.1 - r28811 @ Mon Oct 12 04:02:25 PDT 2009
running on a win2k server box (w2k server software)
CPU's a low-power Via C7 (esther) (1500MHz) with 2G memory.

I've got around ~60K tracks (a bit more than 1.5TB) mostly flac with
about 1K mp3s that I'm trying to find time to get out of storage and
re-rip.

The client machine is running winXP/SP3, firefox 3.5

Everything is wired with 100Tx Cat5e

Does that suggest anything?
Thanks!

Re: [slim] Replaygain: Strange mp3 tag behaviour

2009-10-12 Thread MrSinatra

i use mostly mp3s and i remove all tags EXCEPT id3v2.3 tags

however, mp3s have a lame header and lame will calculate a value for
RG that it puts in the header. however, as far as i know, this header,
or at least the RG value in it, is completely ignored by SBS.

i don't let itunes touch my files. i use winamp to apply the 4 related
RG tags to my files that andy is talking about.

so far i haven't noticed any SBS issues doing it this way, but i will
now spot check it here and there. however, i'd guess the answer is in
your files, not SBS.

the appeal to anyone is based on the individual. in my case, the HQ
hardware that excelled at sound reproduction, via a stereo. a second
and almost as important consideration for me was the ability to listen
without a computer on.

another difference between SB and the products you mention is the focus
on audio handling and services. how your music is presented and
manipulated, and/or using 3rd party servics like pandora.

chances are future SBS development will include DLNA/upnp [soon] and
video [later] but the orig idea of the SB was to focus on perfect audio
to multiple clients via one server.
