Re: [slim] Improved Squeezebox config availible for Harmony users.

2010-05-13 Thread coolnice

What I'm looking for is just a button with the radiostation name (or
graphic), eg BBC Radio 4 which triggers a certain SC favourite (eg
no.4) and would emulate 'press and hold 4' on the SB remote)

If there's no easy solution, I guess I can teach the harmony to learn
prolonged number presses for all 9 digits.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox randomly drops station

2010-05-13 Thread MrSinatra

there is a setting in SBS to allow you to force it to proxy an internet
stream to the hardware, instead of the hardware handling it directly
(and alone). not sure where, but its in there. (it is not a web
surfing proxy, thats different and unrelated to this)

in order to do that, you will need a SBS install BEHIND the sonicwall
with the hardware. i suggest you test the streams out on winamp or
some computer first, that is behind the sonicwall, to see if the
problem persists outside the slim universe.

you will not know if its slims fault, or the sonicwalls, until you do.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

One thing I do not understand with DSBridge is why it is necessary to
recompress the music through Lame to MP3. This recompressing most
likely reduces the sound quality. Would it not be possible to transfer
the sound to the receiver in Redbook CD format instead?

The quality loss incurred by (re-)compression to 320 kbps mp3 is
negligible, I think, but yes, FLAC would have been better. Somewhere in
this thread chp mentioned that he would work on using FLAC instead, but
it seems he hasn't gotten around that yet. The source code is available
(and quite readable, very good actually) so you can take your own stab
at this (implement FLAC compression), if you know these things (I'm a
novice, so my efforts won't result in anything for a long time), and if
so, please share with us.

I have checked several of the remote solutions that are hacked together
already. My thought that perhaps it was possible to use one of the
already existing remote solutions. By installing a packet sniffer it
would probably be easy to see what messages the remote application
(i.e. iPhone app, webpage, Android app) sends to the server remote
application (the part installed on the machine running Spotify). The
most promising project I've found is this: http://h3x.se/. It is
available today as a java app and works. But the interesting thing is
that the guy is developing a new version based on the OFFICIAL Spotify
api and it is my understanding that his solution will be able to stream
the sound as well. If not; we can use his library and the dsbridge
solution.

I've send the guy a message asking if he would be interested in using
his library for the squeezebox solution and he said many had asked for
that and that he was willing. So perhaps if you contact him you guys
could work something out?

If not I think it could be wise to wait a couple of weeks to see how
his C# library based on official Spotify api comes along and then I can
perhaps create some middleware between his app and you squeezebox
plugin?

I think we can make this happen :-)

Re: [slim] MusicIP and accented characters in 7.5.1

2010-05-13 Thread tamanaco

Hmmm, I did not noticed, until I saw this thread, that this accented
character issue with MusicIP was back. I guess it came back with 7.5 as
it was working fine for me with previous releases of SBS. My library has
tons of World music and I have used accented characters in the tags,
path, and files names. I'm not about to rename them as I feel that it
takes away an aesthetic aspect of my library.

I have not been using the M in the Web UI to generate MusicIP
frequently enough to notice that it was not picking up accented
characters. I have been using SpiceFly SugarCube and this plugin uses
MusicIP to create its dynamic playlists. As far as I can tell,
SugarCube has no issues retrieving tracks from MusicIP that have
accented characters. I guess there is something that SugarCube is doing
to handle these MusicIP exceptions. I can use a seed track with foreign
characters in its path, file name, and tag and SugarCube retrieves the
next track. It even retrieves next tracks with accented characters in
them. Maybe... just maybe... some method could be added to the
MusicIP plugin or SBS so that it can retrieve the MusicIP generated
tracks in a similar way that SugarCube does. Having to rename all my
existing files and having to edit tracks that are automatically named
correctly as I rip them with dBpowerAMP is not an option for me. I
also want to maintain the integrity (The correct names of Artists,
Albums and Tracks) of my library as I don't use it exclusively with SBS
and in the future a better player/mixer might come up that has no issues
with these characters.

Re: [slim] What is the best app to sync squeeze with apple products?

2010-05-13 Thread garym

I use SB for my home music system and itunes for synching with my
ipods/iphones. I'm not sure there is anything much easier for you to
do, but then again, I find it pretty simple. Here's what I do:

1. My SB stuff is not connected to ITUNES in any way. That is, I do NOT
use the SB/itunes integration features.

2. My music is all on a USB hard drive connected to my home computer
(that runs SB Server and iTUNES). Skipping some of the details about
how things are organized, assume it is all on D:\music (my actual
setup is more complicated as I have FLAC files that only SB sees,
mp3/aac files that both SB and Itunes sees, and then mp3 versions of
FLAC files that only itunes sees; this is all handled automatically by
my file directory structure).

3. I tell SB Server that the music library is D:\music. It scans this,
creates its own database, etc. I then use SB to play this music.

4. I also tell ITUNES that the music library is D:\music. Itunes keeps
its own library updated with this info. I don't use itunes for playing
anything, but I do synch my ipods/iphones to this ITUNES account.

5. If I add a new album, song, etc. I add this to my itunes library.
There are several ways to do this depending on whether you want itunes
using its own naming/directory structure approach. For example, itunes
now has an automatic way to do this. You can put the new music in the
automatically add to itunes subdirectory (see link).

http://lifehacker.com/5356619/itunes-finally-adds-watched-folder-to-automatically-add-new-music

6. To make SB see the new music, I simply do the incremental music scan
(scan for new music) or occasionally I simply do a rescan of my complete
library.

Bottom line: I have one copy of files on a drive and both itunes and SB
looks at these files, but otherwise don't interact with each other.

Let me know if you have any questions or I can clarify.

Well I will preface my comments with I use my Touch with my Headphone
rig so for me it is perfect device.

I can understand the thought that a touch interface on a device in a
stereo rack probably does not make much sense. But my question to that
is why place it in the stereo rack? If you connect via spdif most
setups would allow you to run spdif easily over 30ft. The other issue
is even if you put it near your stereo why is have a Touch interface a
bad thing? Yea I know it seems to be the most marketed part of the
device but it is far from the most important part.

For me even with the Touch within arms length I tend to not use the
touch interface much because my iphone with iPeng is just a better
interface and this is not really the fault of the Touch per se just the
fact that the iphone can easily fit in one hand and is a more
comfortable form factor.

Touch is packed with features and options to be used in multiple
different usage scenarios.
Features that may not make sense to you in a rack environment can be
very useful in non-rack setups, and vice versa.

I don't particularly like it when a source component absolutely requires
that I have the remote in my hand to make use of it. At least with the
SB Touch, I can still use it if my remote has slipped behind a sofa

There are a number of other less conventional installation options
where the touch interface would come to the fore, e.g., wall mounted

To me, the touch interface is far from the main selling point, but I'm

IMO, the SB Radio would be better suited to a bedside headphone rig as
it could double as an alarm clock (if the alarm was reliable!). I
think the same applies to most desktop situations. I do see the
argument for it to be wall mounted although there are probably better
options...

I love my SBoxes (when they work) but to me, and obviously that

Re: [slim] MusicIP and accented characters in 7.5.1

SqueezeCenter can create mixes with accented characters in the filename,
however it won't play them since it can't find them because of the wrong
character encoding (the error will show up in the log). Do yours
actually play?

This character encoding has been an issue with many versions of
SqueezeCenter/Slimserver. Very frustrating. I resisted 'fixing' my
filenames as well, but now I gave in, and changed my library.

I my case SC creates mixes, but only with tracks that have no accented
characters. If I select a track with accented characters as the seed SC
will generate a mix, but the seed track won't be in the play list. Also,
none of the other tracks added to the playlist have accented
characters.

With SugarCube I can use a track with accented characters as the seed
and this track plus subsequent dynamically added tracks to playlist...
play without a problem. This includes dynamically added tracks with
accented characters in their tags, path and files names.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox randomly drops station

2010-05-13 Thread hellbringer616

By hit it i meant i can't connect the Squeezebox to SBS, and i
installed it locally and while the squeezebox said it never connected.
It did somehow get connected once just long enough to update. But since
then, it's impossible for either device to see one another.

According to the sonicwall ports 9000 and 3483 are open as required by
the squeezebox. the SBS still can't see the SB, and vice versa. I can
however go to Mysqueezebox.com and using the remote control. change the
song, pause it, play it, ect.

I'm beginning to think faulty device at this point..

My second squeezebox at a different location has been playing non stop
for 5 days now (it is behind a sonicwall as well. But a much newer
model)

They just need to follow the link posted in the original post of that
thread. There is a big difference between no further developement and
discontinued. Essentially, there is no longer any internal resource time
that will be allocated to developing the older player UI or firmware. The
limited resources available are clearly going to focus on
squeezeplay-based devices like the Touch, Radio and Controller.

Not scary, and not difficult to grasp.

This is not an official Logitech forum. It is a user forum that

Re: [slim] Squeezebox randomly drops station

2010-05-13 Thread MrSinatra

so you have the hardware, (what kind of SB is it?) and the SBS software
both behind the sonicwall, meaning on the same LAN side?

and you can't get the hardware to connect to the software?

are both connections wired? sometimes it can be a pain to get them
talking, you need to reboot etc... i would try this:

forget mysb.com for the moment.

start SBS and then start/install Squeezeplay on the same computer
behind the sonicwall. try to force the proxy to squeezeplay (not sure
if you can, but try). then try listening to different internet
streams, see if it works. (what you do on squeezeplay should show up
on SBS).

try your shoutcast station too, (where is it btw, behind the sonicwall
or not?)

that should at least let you know how SBS/SP is working.

then, try rebooting/factory resetting your hardware a few times, and
getting it to connect to the SBS. if it doesn't connect to SBS, it
could be the hardware, but it could be the sonicwall or other things
too. sometimes you gotta reboot the device or reboot/play around in
SBS to get it to work.

NO.

Read the bugzilla link, as it doesn't even need 'official clarification'

doesn't preclude third party patches, at least for software-side fixes (ie

I don't think Logitech can crush rumors. Look at the huge thread
started when someone thought he heard some low-level Logitech employee
say that Receiver was discontinued -- even having senior Logitech
Squeezebox staff very clearly say that they're manufacturing more units
wasn't enough to quell the rumors and suspicions. Boom's not
discontinued yet, sounds great, and Logitech has a very good track
record of supporting older gear. If it fits your needs, by all means
buy a Boom and enjoy the music.

for development (I waiting for the GSM version in the US before I get
one for regular use), so it's not that heavily used, but even so it
seems to randomly lock up and reboot for no reason.

Re: [slim] Is the boom being discontinued?

2010-05-13 Thread usch

Add in that even if they tossed a million hours into development time,
they are really against the bar on features they can add in the limited
resources of the Boom and other ip3k devices. Just not enough
 memory/flash/cpu to do much more.

Besides that, since IP3K players do hardly anything on their own
without a server there aren't many things that would have to go into
the player firmware.

Things that won't get implemented now:

- change the WOL behaviour so that you don't have to press the Power
button twice (first to wake up the server, then wait until the server
is up, and then again to actually turn on the player)
- allow entering of a stream URL even when not connected to any server
(probably WONTFIX anyway because they want you to use
mysqueezebox.com)
- allow entering of the actual WPA key (64 hex digits) instead of a
passphrase

and that's about it. I just thought of another one, but it slipped my
mind before I could write it down, so probably it wasn't that
important. ;)

[slim] Tray icon not showing

2010-05-13 Thread racey

I start the squeezebox server manually (due to a problem with the NAS).
This works but the tray icon does show. Is there a way to get it to
appear?
