Re: [slim] Backing up Flac files to external hard drive

2010-08-11 Thread Nonreality

The arrange audio function of dbpoweramp is pretty handy for moving
(caution-not copying)your albums from one disc or folder to another.
If you rip or buy music you can have it move the tracks and build
folders based on your criteria. Once I have it set up for my folder
and file structures it's just like the ripper and will use your tags as
you want your folders to be. Just start it and does the work from then
on. Best to experiment on an extra copy of your music until you get it
to do exactly what you want.

Re: [slim] Where are your LPs?

2010-08-11 Thread Phil Leigh

russelc;568092 Wrote:

I still haven't worked up the courage to even think about digitzing
just those albums that I cannot get on CD :-)

The upside is that I think they still sound better through my LP12 than
any CD player or streamer I have heard including Linn's own mega bucks
items. Having said that it would be nice to get everything digitally
stored if for no other reason than to archive it all. One day perhaps.

 ...

{as a once proud and fully paid-up member of the LP12 club...}

When properly ripped (and this is an art and a science) , vinyl sources
replayed via a good digital player are indistinguishable from playing
the vinyl. In fact in my experience they are slightly better for many
reasons, of which immunity to airborne feedback is just one. Also, you
only have to PROPERLY clean the vinyl once, just before you rip it...

What I am saying is that when done PROPERLY the ripping process and
digital replay chain do not degrade the sound of the vinyl. However,
the SB3 analogue outs are not quite good enough for this to hold - it's
definitely true for a Touch though IMO.

The characteristic warm, friendly sound of vinyl that many people
love is a bunch of distortions that happen (sometimes) to be highly
euphonic. They are not easily mimicked in DSP via convolving processes.
These distortions are captured faithfully in the ripping process and
retained through a digital replay chain of very good quality.

In the earlier days of digital, the nice analoge distortions were
eliminated but replaced with some rather horrible ones. This is pretty
much in the past now. As a point of reference, listen to the standard
16/44 release of Peace... By Popular Demand by Keb Mo - I defy anyone
to say that sounds digital (except for the lack of background
noise...).

So IMO any fundamental/inherent digital recording/replay problems can
be and have been overcome (pity it took 20+ years, though).

I have over 100 examples of rips of ultra high quality vinyl sources
(at 24/96 or higher) and the best available mastering of an equivalent
digital release (CD, HDCD, DVD-A whatever). It is really interesting to
compare them.

Typically, the rips exhibit slight constriction of the stereo
soundstage, slightly less dynamic impact, slightly less controlled bass
and a slightly rolled-off top end. All these are slight - sometimes they
are not audible at all. More interesting is the comparison of the
critical mid-range region, where they sound very, very similar indeed.
Also that indefinable sense of air or life is present in both
versions. What is more noticeable is the lack of speed stability
artefacts, inner groove tracing distortion and dirt/damage induced
noise in the digital masters. A great vinyl rip will minimise all of
these of course, but they will always be there to some extent...

Sometimes even the best available vinyl just isn't that good - compare
REM or Neil Young on great vinyl and DVD-A for example... (sorry I
don't have any classical references)

Sorry, wandered off-topic somewhat.

Hi Pippin - thanks for the quick reply...

I'm using 7.4.2 and the latest iPeng release (as of last week).

I'm not using MySqueezebox.com - I'm accessing the internet radio from

This sounds like I need to finally upgrade to a later revision of the

No, you need to configure MySqueezebox.com in
Settings-MySqueezebox.com in your Web Interface.
Even if you use your own server, that server still uses
MySqueezebox.com for internet radio lookup. That's why you don't see

 Sorry, wandered off-topic somewhat.

No problem, thanks for your input, glad to hear I am not the only one!

I think we rip LPs for different reasons. Although once a bachelor
audiophile hi-fi nut (hence about £10k of turntable and amps), with a
young family, I no longer have the time or space to set up a system, or
listen to it, the way I would ideally like. However what I really did
miss was the music. I make no pretence that it is in any way superior
sounding to (or even as good as) a ripped CD. By your standards my LP
recording process is distinctly sub-standard!

My recording of the LPs is just incidental to a process of going
through my LP collection and deciding what I want to listen to through
the Squeezebox and what I don't. As I say, if the LP recording is
really rubbish (and I really want the musiic) I will buy the CD as well
anyway.

If I was a totally rational human being I would sell the LP12 for the
£2,000 or so I would get for it, buy my entire LP collection as CDs,
rip them, then sell the CDs and LPs on e-bay.

However there is something slightly special about owning music in a
hard format such as a CD or LP. My 21 year old nephew has given up
buying iTunes downloads and has now started buying CDs again - for
reasons he cannot really explain. He is now going through his
downloads and buying the CDs of the music he really likes!

I've never really thought of it like that. I have been buying music for
over 40 years though so I guess it does add up. I haven't bought too
many LP's in the last 10 years or so apart from about 200 classical
recordings and some high quality 180g pressings.

The thing is there was a time when I would happily buy 20-30 albums a

those! Browsing CD's is just no fun for some reason. I guess I was very
obsessive:-)

I have acquired about 1500 albums from friends who abandened LP's in
favour of the silver disc so I guess its not quite so bad as it seems.

By the way I consider my collection as modest compared to some people I
know who have collections in the 10K+ albums bracket, and by todays
standards it's tiny compared to some peoples digital collections.

Oh, and yes I have listened to every single album at least once:-)

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-08-11 Thread bluegaspode

I guess I'm biased, but I consider SqeezePad a full-grown product that
can easily replace a SqueezeBox Controller.
You can also see whats currently missing/soon to be coming here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80575

Its difficult to say if its serious competition to iPengOniPad:
- noone knows the plans of pippin
- noone knows when it will be finished
- noone knows what other features SqueezePad will have, when the
competition finally starts - so comparing todays SqueezePad with
tomorrows iPengOniPad wouldn't be very fair right now :)
- for every user different things are important.

If the positive comments on this thread are not enough here some of the
4+5star quotes (which is the average rating) from iTunes around the
world (thanks by the way to all the commenters on iTunes):

Netherlands:
Perfect!!! This app works great! Thnx keep up the good work!
Brilliant This app works perfect en so easy to work with. Thank you!
Was up and running in less then a minute. Only indexing of playlists
seem not to be in sync. But very happy with what I have seen so far!

Sweden:
 Perfect app!
A great app for the ipad to control your squeezeboxes.
I have been running ipeng for a long time on my iphone and it has
worked great, however i been wanting an app for my ipad as well.
The ipeng do work on ipad but it looks not great.
I first hesitated before bying this app because of the pricing but i
just say its well worth every penny.
I have some 12+ songs, all in flac, and it can handle my large
 music library without any problem.
For now this is the best app if you have squeezebox, highly
 recommended!

UK:

 great app
This app certainly performs the functions you might expect.
The operation is a little unusual and may not appeal to everyone but
this app does what it says on the tin.
Development Is ongoing and support via the logitech forums is excellent
and prompt. If you have suggestions pass them on via the forums and who
knows they may be incorporated in future updates.
I have an original squeeze box so a control with artwork that you can
see is a great improvement and certainly better than the duet etc.
 etc.

In view of potential future developments, 4 stars, but it can only get
 better.

 Worth buying
The latest version is great. The icon for going back is a huge
 improvement.

US:

Exactly What I Was Looking For
Squeezepad is exactly what I was looking for to control my Squeezebox
Radio. I had been trying to get by with the web server interface via
Safari, but the layout, frames, and buttons are not iPad friendly (it
is barely mouse friendly too). Our Radio is hooked up to our home
intercom system to give us whole house audio. Now I can be anywhere in
the house and easily and fully control the Radio. No more trying build
a big playlist sitting at the computer, or running back downstairs to
 adjust things.

4 stars for the price, i think it's a little high, but I understand the
developer's costs, and that it is a somewhat limited audience, making
high volume sales not a reality to allow a low price.

 Looking forward to future updates.

 Great App, rapid development
This App supports the Logitech Squeezebox series of music players. This
is a great Version 1 with most of the features required to allow
complete remote control and interaction with the devices.

The author is extremely responsive to accommodate both bug fixes and
 enhancements.

 Even better
The latest version fixes some obscure problems a few folks had in the
last version and retains all the good stuff. Big beautiful cover art
images, lots of options and features, but at the core a simple
comprehensive interface that leaves all other ipad solutions in the
 dust.

Check out the forum at slimdevices for more info and a chat with the
 developer.

 Brilliant!
Perfect, clean, simple... After being disappointed in the competition,
I stumbled across SqueezePad by accident. This is just what I was
looking for... The best $$$ I've spent on an iPad app... Highly
 recommended!

Oh - and to be fair - here is a 1star rating from Australia:

Terrible - don't waste your money on this.
At $13 this app is a complete rip off. I feel shafted and I weish I
 could get a refund.
The design is ordinary and the functionality extremely limited. I could
not get album art to display.
There also seem to be usability disaters such as not being able to
 return to the home page.
Save your money and use the web app via safari. So much better!
This user unfortunately didn't try to get some help here as far as I
know.
Thanks to another user (hi goobi) also in Australia there is a 5star
rating:

 Good app
This app is excellent. Have to disagree with previous reviewer.

My ratings are full of RTFM stuff and you'll find you also get a lot of
negative feedback on some of Apple's design decisions :)

Re: [slim] New Boom on the Horizon?

2010-08-11 Thread iPhone

Philip Meyer;568277 Wrote:
What would be the point of that? Do you mean to run a Tiny SBS server?

I don't need TinySC in a Receiver II. How would one safely eject the
USB Drive? From a new menu on the Controller, what if one doesn't have
a Controller? TinySC on a Receiver II, no thank you.

I would like to see a Receiver II based on SqueezeOS because I think a
'Smart' player has advantages and it would be simple and direct to base
Receiver II off of a striped down Touch. With the WiFi card eliminated
because of WiFi on a chip, designing is easier. I would like to see the
Receiver II be in a vertical case or have an external antenna option so
it has better signal strength then all current Squeezeboxes since most
Receivers are going to be hidden away. My reason for keeping the
Receiver and updating it is first to have the newer DAC Chips and 24/96
native capability, but mostly so users can add multi-room players
without the price of needing a Touch screen or controls. With the
Controller, iPeng, and being able to control players from Touch and SB
Radio, it just makes sense to me to have a Receiver II.

Receiver II could even be a base unit/docking station/charger for a
Controller based on an iPad sized touch screen. This Controller would
not have a DAC or be a player like the current Controller. It would
just be a Touch Remote with IR, RF, and WiFi control capabilities so it
could also be ones universal remote. I bought a Harmony 1000 so I could
get rid of the 7 remotes I had on the table. That worked great and was
heaven until I put a Receiver in the room, no IR control, so back to
having a second remote, that being the Controller or iPeng. Where
Receiver II would be sold separately or bundled with the large touch
Remote.

Getting back on thread, I feel there will be a Boom II in the future
with a Color display and SqueezeOS. Don't know how I feel about having
a touch screen on a device that is mainly a player with speakers,
probably just color LCD like SB Radio only larger. I don't think it
would be coming anytime soon. The Boom is still selling well.

Oh, one thing that I should add is that if SqueezePad stays as it is now
then iPeng for iPad will be sufficiently different from SqueezePad that
you might want to make a decision on taste, after all, different people
have different preferences.

I would seriously suspect your wi-fi router / access point, in

I got exactly your symptoms (everything fine wired, but problems with
wireless) and repacing the router's power supply fixed the problem
completely. Trouble is there is no way to test this without buying a
new psu. However, that is cheaper than buying a new rotuer!

This is a good line of thinking. But the OP should still change
channels just to eliminate a channel issue as the problem instead of
pushing back when asking for help. Troubleshooting requires making
changes and diagnosing the differences between State 1 and State 2.

And with router prices falling the way they are, for twice what one can
buy a replacement power supply for, one can have a new router. And its
10 times the router one used to have. If there is a Best Buy or Home
Depot around, I would even buy a new router and if it didn't fix the
problem just return it.

Since all is well when using Ethernet, the problem is cut in half. Its
probably not the SBS Server or Player (unless the WiFi card is flakey
and usually they are all or nothing). So this leaves the router, its
access point, or interference. Move the player within a few feet of the
router, does the problem go away? Answer this question and we have cut
the problem in half again.

Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!

2010-08-11 Thread erland

I've decided it's time to start doing something based on this thread, so
now we need people with development experience.

If there is anyone reading this thread that have development
experience, is inspired and want to participate more actively to
realize some of the things mentioned in this thread, I'd like you to
send me a PM or mail. If you use mail, please write your forum account
name in the mail so I know who you are on these forums.

I'm especially interested in someone that have experience of GUI
development in some language supported on both OSX, Windows and Linux,
I would prefer something more modern than perl but if you only know
perl that's fine too. I feel that experience of designing GUI's are
more important than actual development experience, so don't hesitate to
contact me if you have only worked with GUI design but don't have any
experience with development.

I'm also interested in someone with huge experience of classical and/or
jazz music that likes to participate more actively in the process, maybe
not as developer but as someone who can look at draft ideas of
information models and do analysis regarding which search/browse
functions we need to support for these music categories.

Hopefully there will be a huge interest to participate and in that case
we might not involve everyone now immediately, we need to setup some
rough design/architecture first, but I can promise that we will do our
best to make sure to find some part eventually to everyone who is
interested to participating as developer.

To everyone else who doesn't have development experience, keep posting
ideas in this thread that would improve the music discovery experience
and we will pickup all the good ones that are realistic to implement.
Eventually we will get to a beta testing phase and then we need all of
you as beta testers.

To everyone that haven't posted an answer on the questions in the
initial post in this thread, please post your answers.

Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 1.2.5 now on the App Store

2010-08-11 Thread Rodrigo

I´m having a problem I can´t affirm it´s due to this version of Ipeng.
Today, I configured squeezebox to a wireless connection and now,
everytime I change ipeng to my own music server or mysqueezebox.com,
the squeezebox receiver stops being recognized as a client. The problem
can be solved removing and putting back the power chord, but that´s not
the ideal one. I´m quite sure something like that was happening via a
wired one too.

Thanks,
Rodrigo.

Re: [slim] New Boom on the Horizon?

2010-08-11 Thread eganders

Given that we're already almost halfway through August 2010, I would not
expect to see a Boom 2 this year. Even though these forums are not
the official voice of Logitech, there are enough knowledgeable people
around here that I'm confident we'd have an idea if something was
coming soon. The 2010 Holiday season is only 4.5 months away, and
Squeeze products make great gifts, so it doesn't seem likely this
year.

I have no inside knowledge, but since wireless N is finally ratified,
improved DAC's are available, Vfd displays are giving way to LCD's, and
improved Squeezeserver v.7.6 software replete with some fundamental
fixes and changes is coming (hopefully by years end???), speculating on
a Boom2 in time for the 2011 holiday season might well be considered a
reasoned bet.

For the retailers of the world, the 2010 holiday season starts in about
20 days. You can not release a product late in the year. The retailers
have their product lines set and on the shelves by late October, and
they are focused only on selling from then on until the new year. Most
retailer's purchasing folks won't talk to you after September 1.

I have no information, and if I had any, I could not share it. I was a
beta tester for the Boom and the Radio, and for each, I had to sign a
non-disclosure-agreement. I don't think I could even say that I had not
signed an NDA.

So there may be a product in late Beta-test now, I just don't know or
can't say.

Logitech continues the tradition of most electronic firms; they never
comment on future products. They only announce products when they are in
the warehouses and ready to sell. (The Touch was a special case
exception to that rule). So its pointless to speculate, those that know
are not talking, and those that are talking don't know.

Re: [slim] New Boom on the Horizon?

2010-08-11 Thread sander

The best precursor of what the future holds for Squeezebox is the how
much integration there is with the new Google TV revue. Harmony is
featured prominently whereas Squeezebox is only hinted at. To me this
is the best indication of what Logitech thinks of the Squeezebox
brand.

This would be the best indicator of how much resources they will
continue to push, seeing as they need to hire new some new hardware
developers and apparently retool (in the case of the receiver) to
continue moving forward at all.
