[slim] sticky squeezebox

2014-04-14 Thread Craig, James
Hi all,
Took my old v1 squeezebox out of storage this weekend and found the black
plastic finish has gone sticky!
Any advice on dealing with this?

I would expect the path to the iTunes_Hist.txt file needs to be provided

The text file containing the play history should appear in your configured LMS
playlist directory.
You then run iTunesUpdate.pl on it.

Re: [slim] New station suggestion

2010-08-31 Thread James Vertigan

Pretty sure, Toby.

When opening the stream via the Reciva website, it opens RealPlayer and
gives this URL: http://174.142.150.12:8777/ - which points to a
Shoutcast DNAS Status page.

That is the link I've given to RadioTime, I'm hoping it's the right one
for the stream.

[slim] New station suggestion

2010-08-30 Thread James Vertigan

Hi,

I was wondering how one could submit a radio station to be added to the
Squeezebox Internet Radio so it can be made available publicly rather
than just in the favourites menu? Is there an email address or
somewhere on the Logitech website?

I would like to add this station which is being run by a friend here in
the UK. It is called Network North Devon and is already available via
Reciva radios - it uses the Shoutcast streaming. I have the URL, but as
this is my first post here, I can't post it at the moment.

If anyone can tell me how this can be added to the public database, I
would be most grateful, as would my friend as this would increase
awareness of his station among the Squeezebox community.

It's certainly not the plugin creating them itself, but it may be a side effect

Hence I always used to think it was caused by the library rescan...

Re: [slim] Wired or wireless

2008-08-25 Thread James Van Vleet

Assuming the cost is not too high for the second jack I would go to
wired Ethernet. It is true that the audio quality will be no different
if you are not getting any dropouts. But, while it is true that
wireless bandwidth is plenty for these devices, it is important to know
that is it shared bandwidth.

This means that if you have a 54mb G wireless router, everything
using wireless shares that 54mb.

So in the future if you happen to start watching movies off your laptop
or put in a new wireless device that needs lots of bandwidth, these
things will compete with your wireless transporter.

Heck, a new cordless phone might change your wireless experience.

[slim] Fix for 7.1 upgrade issue

2008-08-03 Thread James Van Vleet

I thought I would post quick about an issue I had upgradeing to 7.1 from
7.02. The OS was Gentoo but could happen anywhere. What happened was
that I would attempt to start slimserver after the upgrade and
Migration.pm line 115 kept blowing up with things such as The table
'#sql-fa4_31' is full.

I have plenty of extra drive space and memory. Searching around I did
not have much luck finding a fix but it appears that a handful of other
posts have been made over the years and deleting the database appears to
have been the only solution.

I got lucky and found that the problem has to do with a maximum file
size setting in MySQL.

In my.cnf originally I had:
innodb_data_file_path = ibdata1:10M:autoextend:max:128M

and replaced it with:
innodb_data_file_path = ibdata1:10M:autoextend

And the upgrade finished normally. According to
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/full-table.html this setting
appears to place a size limit on things like alter table and such.

Hopefully this post will help out somone else or cause a helpful
message added to the server.log.

Re: [slim] Fix for 7.1 upgrade issue

2008-08-03 Thread James Van Vleet

I am sure it was set by something else - I use mysql for many things and
had it emerged before ever installing squeezecenter. I would hope that
does not change the need to make the upgrade log more useful. A
squeezebox is a power user kind of device and I bet squeezecenter runs
in all kinds of environments.

On the other hand this post by itself will probably help the kind of
people that use mysql for many things. :-)

Re: [slim] BBC Radio gets iPlayer treatment

2008-06-26 Thread James Cridland

Thanks for your comments. There'll be a full posting on the BBC Radio
Labs blog later today, but to answer some points here (for national
radio only):

- The Register's wrong; the Flash streams are not just 128k (indeed,
some's even higher). This is on-demand only for now; live soon.
- There are at least two further changes to audio quality for on-demand
and live between now and the end of the year.
- Our Real Player (and Windows Media) streams are unaffected. As
@funkstar says: if it works now it'll continue to work. Some streams
will increase in quality before the end of the year too.

@bpa: Non-UK users (should) get all the new features except the Flash
audio.

Hope that helps everyone; thanks for listening.

[slim] A couple of questions

2008-03-22 Thread james e

I'm doing a little bit of research on this product and I would like some
questions answered before I buy.

1. I use iTunes for my library and I've spent a lot of time organizing
specific playlists. Can the duet access and play my iTunes playlists or
can it just access the music.

2. Does the duet have to be wireless? I have a computer with a wired
router and ethernet running to my stereo. Would I still be able to use
the duet?

3. Is the remote IR, Bluetooth, etc.? How far is the remote's range?
Can I use it if I am in the other room or outside?

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Release 7.0 advantages? and when?

2008-01-17 Thread Craig, James (IT)
I've reported this a few times now and it's still the case.
When the Default skin is shown in Firefox, it uses 100% CPU time.
When it's loaded but not the visible tab, CPU usage drops to 0%.

I do not have Firebug installed.

It's making the new interface unusable for me, and these reports are
clearly becoming more frequent as more users move to 7.0.

Once again, is there anything I can do to help diagnose this issue?

Re: [slim] Release 7.0 advantages? and when?

2008-01-17 Thread Craig, James (IT)
That's no problem as long as we're not talking about _minutes_ (or 20
seconds for that matter). Any program will take all the resource it can
get to get its job done the fastest possible. The issue is the duration
of the process, not the spike. The first time loading of the page is
slow, I have to admit. But once it's loaded, it's imho much more
responsive as the others, as most of the controls are done without page
reloads.

Sorry perhaps I wasn't clear.
When the Default interface is shown, Firefox uses 100% cpu time *all the
time* - not just when it's loading.
(Although it does take over 40 seconds to load from scratch - Classic
takes under 5 seconds).

Because I run SqueezeCentre on the same machine, this means that the
performance of SqueezeCentre is seriously impacted.
If I click on a track to play it, it can take 30 seconds to start
playing.
But if I click on a track, then move another tab to the front of
Firefox, the track starts playing immediately because Firefox isn't
hogging all my CPU time!

Re: [slim] Advice on Universal remote - Pronto?

2008-01-10 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Personally, I love my Pronto 7000. It's got plenty of hard buttons and a
beautiful colour screen.
I can control every IR device I own with it.
(Wierdly, I still use the SB remote for intensive button pushing, but
it's the only one I do that for)
It's a one-way device though and you can't do stuff like display cover
art on it.
I got mine off ebay so it wasn't too expensive - about the same as the
new SB Controller!

I know that Barry Gordon's put a lot of work into the 9600 which allows
it to work directly with SlimServer and offer a much richer experience,
but that's a very different remote, and last time I checked, crazily
expensive.

Re: [slim] Upgrade Now to SC7?

2007-12-18 Thread Craig, James (IT)
 - screen refresh was labored and delayed
 Player screen or web interface?

Hi Michael, I've been meaning to say for a while, I find the new web
interface incredibly slow.
I'm running from SVN on Windows XP, Firefox 2.

Firstly, It takes almost a minute to fully load.
Secondly, I have observed that if I open two tabs in Firefox, one with
the default page, the other with any other website, when the
SqueezeCentre tab is active (but fully loaded and doing nothing),
Firefox uses 100% CPU time. Switch to the other tab and CPU usage
disappears. Back to SC, CPU back to 100%

Is there any useful information I can get to debug this?

Re: [slim] Upgrade Now to SC7?

2007-12-18 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Firstly, It takes almost a minute to fully load.
Are you running short on memory? What's the machine's specs?

It's a 2Ghz P4 with 1Gb of memory. SqueezeCentre is running on the same
machine.
I think there is plenty of memory, about 600Mb in use normally.

Firefox uses 100% CPU time. Switch to the other tab and CPU usage
disappears. Back to SC, CPU back to 100%

That's not something you should see (at least I don't). Do you have any
FF extensions installed? Eg. Firebug is known to slow it down to a
crawl (but I couldn't do without :-/).

No, I don't think I have anything unusual installed, just Adblock.
I did have GreaseMonkey installed but I get the same symptoms with it
disabled.

Re: [slim] Can you get an iTunes playlist into Slim....

2007-12-07 Thread Craig, James (IT)
If you run SlimServer iTunes on the same Windows box,
you can use my iTunesPartyShuffle plugin to play iTunes playlists on
SlimServer without scanning the iTunes library.
Any tracks encountered that aren't already in the SlimServer library are
scanned and added.
They're played in the same way as the 'Random Mix', so tracks are added
on demand, rather than loading the whole playlist

It won't play the flac versions instead of the MP3s and it will leave
the MP3s in the SlimServer library
(they might disappear after the next rescan, I'm not sure?)

Actually the iTunes Party Shuffle plugin would do pretty much what the

It will allow you to play a playlist from iTunes without having to

Tracks are added as old ones finish, in the same way as the Random Mix

As I said, you should have a Playlist called Podcasts.
(Even if you don't actually have a playlist in iTunes called Podcasts,
that's just the way it shows up. )
Being a Playlist, you'll find it in the 'Playlists' submenu of 'Browse
Music'.

Now, if you have your iTunes playlists in SlimServer, but they're all
empty, that's a whole other issue and I'm sure you can find plenty of
discussion of that in other threads! Luckily, it's never happened to me
so I don't know what the cause is!

Alternatively, you could try looking for Podcasts under Browse/Genre

Re: [slim] Best Mac random-songs route?

2007-03-28 Thread James

iTunes Update iTunes Party Shuffle plugins work best together!
iTunes Update sets the play counts etc which can then feed into the
Party Shuffle playlist. The Party Shuffle plugin then becomes useful
because it makes you no longer dependent on the SlimServer library
rescan updating SlimServer's snapshot of the iTunes playlists.

Although I can only guarantee the PS plugin works on Windows, there's
no real reason it wouldn't work on the Mac. As ever, I need a bit of
help testing it, in particular the bit that deletes tracks from the
party shuffle playlist.

Re: [slim] Control SlimServer _from_ iTunes

2007-02-04 Thread James

You could try commenting out the call to the 'begin_playing' playing
function from Anton's script. Then any new tracks will be appended to
the SlimServer playlist but not played immediately.
Unfortunately that would mean that if you do skip a track half way
through in iTunes, SlimServer will carry on playing the old track.

I can't think how you could support both types of behaviour at the same
time!

BTW, I wrote a windows version of this concept a long time ago, but I

There's a bug open for this
 http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4180
But I don't think there's been much progress.

I searched around last week and there still doesn't seem to be any
documentation anywhere of how to link a track to an art file using only
what's in the library xml.
I doubt Apple are going to provide any but I'm surprised no-one else has
figured it out yet!
And I still don't know how to easily view the .itc file content on
Windows or I'd have a look.

It is a shame because I now have artwork for almost all my music but can
see none of it in SlimServer!

RE: [slim] Say it A'int so Slimp3!!

2006-12-01 Thread James Dunn
Hi,

I've had this situation in the past but I can't remember the fix.
It doesn't sound like your display has gone wrong though your date/time
wouldn't work if this was the case.

The Slimp3 display is driven from the server and I'd have thought this is
the most likely area where the problem lies. Try re-installing it.

However, it might be a corrupt slimp3 firmware issue or sticky bit causing
the characters displayed to be corrupted.

You might want to try upgrading to firmware 2.3 - the last one released.
This release is not designed to fix your issue but it might fix corrupt
firmware. The upgrade code is no longer supplied in the bundle but it
should be in old distros if you look through the archive to around version
3.

Cheers,

James

My slimp3 has been stellar ever since I first got it way back when. I

problem. Started a different playlist and the same thing happened
again. I'm running 6.5.1, firmware 2.2 - I have two other SB2's and no

with iTunes, but it's working fine for me, with SlimServer set to 'start
on login'

[slim] Re: 6.5.1 - dos window keeps opening

2006-10-08 Thread James

I think this is the new SlimTray app. Dan says it will pop up a cmd
window when spawning external processes.
To revert to the normal service based config, right click on the
SlimTray icon, stop SlimServer and change the startup type to
'automatically run at system start' and restart SlimServer.

I get the error writing msqld.exe on each upgrade as well. I guess it's
not a problem until the MySQL version actually changes...

RE: [slim] 6.5.0 is OK except for....

2006-10-02 Thread James Dunn
Hi,

There were two causes on my machine for the no album no artist problem under
6.5.0

1) Cover art embedded in the album. I went through the files with iTunes
and deleted the cover art and all the tracks but one were put back in the
database.
2) The track title was too long on the last track (something classical that
had a title that went on for probably more than 100-200 characters). I
shortened the title and the track was back in the database.

I found them all by browsing albums to no album and picked them off one by
one in iTunes. It soon became obvious that cover art was the problem
because I don't normally use it and tracks without cover art were OK.

Cheers,

James

 2) I now have a bunch of random no artist/no album tracks. I saw
another poster mention this but couldn't spot the solution. I can't
see them in mp3tag or in the file directory.

[slim] 6.5.0 and Plugins advice

2006-09-22 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Alex,
iTunes Update is the plugin that doesn't work well with SlimServer as a
service (although there are workarounds).
If you had 6.3 running not as a service you should have no trouble doing
the same with 6.5 - the procedure is exactly the same.

Updated (and tested!) versions of LastFM, SlimScrobbler iTunesUpdate
are available from my web page

2006-09-22 Thread Craig, James (IT)
None of my artwork is displayed in Slimserver (official
 v.6.5). The new
way iTunes 7 stores artwork is apparently not supported by Slimserver
yet , but even my previously imported albums that have jpg's embedded
 don't show any artwork.

I couldn't find a bug for the new 'Album Artwork' feature in iTunes 0.7,
open or closed, so I've opened a new one.
Please vote for this if you want your album artwork displayed in
slimserver...

RE: [slim] Why use iTunes

2006-09-22 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Can someone explain what the adavantages are to using
the iTunes for the library instead of just using your disk library. I
used iTunes at first and then stopped. For one thing, I had to
remember to manually add each new directory into iTunes before
 Slimserver could see it.

Using iTunes requires a different state of mind!

You must no longer interact directly with the files on disk - All music
goes into iTunes before/as it gets played, and all access to music is
via iTunes (excepting SlimServer). iTunes organises and catalogues the
music for you and you no longer need to worry about it!

If you don't want to use it like this, I would say don't bother.

A lot of people find it very frustrating...

RE: [slim] Re: iTunes 7 (QuickTime 7.1.3) Rips Don't Play

2006-09-19 Thread Craig, James (IT)
 OTOH, the cover
art never appears in Slimserver. But that's another matter.

I read that the cover art downloaded in iTunes 7 keeps all the artwork
in a separate artwork directory,
rather than in the files themselves or their directories?
I assume SlimServer doesn't (yet) know about this.

I must admit, I am hoping for a patch release for iTunes before I touch
version 7, as nice as the new features sound!

Yes, its in a different folder. But it doesn't keep the artwork as
JPEGs, but as ITC files. I have no idea what those are.

This should be helpful for the developers:
http://blog.skuldtek.com/2006/09/16/albumartworkxtractor-extract-album-a

A quick look at one of these files shows that there is 492 bytes of
header data followed by a JPEG image.

I tried this myself with a track with no genres and it worked fine.

Yes, the CVS web interfaces is confusing as it shows deleted directories

It looks like LastFM are changing their IP addresses.
Failed submission:

Successful submission:
Got Post URL : http://62.216.251.205:80/protocol_1.1

These are supposed to be the same address!
If you upgrade to the latest version from CVS, I have recently
rewritten a lot of this code, so that may solve the problem.

the plugin reverts to caching to a local file,
but it won't try again until you either to a manual submit or change
 the autosubmit status.

It is supposed to resubmit when the timer runs out.
(The timer doubles each time submission fails, so it can become a very
long wait quite quickly.)
Do you not ever see the automatic submission happening?

BTW is this for SS 6.3 or 6.5? The code has changed significantly for
the 6.5 version.
