Re: [slim] Extreme difference in library scan times between servers ?

We couldn’t make out the reason for my buddy’s long scan times, maybe a
hardware fault after all. He decided we postpone further diagnostics
until we’ll both switch to Linux Mint 20, hopefully July or so.

@BJW: Thanks for the kind words! Long time ago … :-)

Re: [slim] Extreme difference in library scan times between servers ?

2019-11-23 Thread Moonbase

Don’t want to hijack the thread but a close friend and I observe a
similar difference: On the same ~150k tracks library (mixed FLAC/MP3), I
usually get between *8–15 minutes* for an update scan, while his machine
regularly takes much more than *20 hours* for the same.

We both use the same LMS version and have the same settings, the
machines differ as follows:

Mine:
Ubuntu Studio 14.04, XFCE, Dell Optiplex 7010 (4-core i5-3470), 32 GB
RAM, boot disc: 1TB SSD, music disc: 4TB HGST HDD.

His:
Linux Mint 17.3 (based on Ubuntu 14.04), Cinnamon, Dell Optiplex 9010
(4-core i7-3770), 16 GB RAM, boot+music disc: 4TB WD SSHD.

Could that really "only" be his slower DE and 16 GB less RAM, and/or
running from a SSHD instead of an SSD/HDD combination?

I vote for

- MusicIP pre-installed and configured (plus the ability to enter
your key somewhere to use the extra features)
- Some safe means of storing the MusicIP fingerprint data in the
files (by either using genpuid [a working version], or making headless
do it), for the people who want to have all-in-a-box.
- dual-drive possibility (1 DVD, 1HDD, 1 empty HDD slot)
- a dual-core version

Re: [slim] Anyone using Deltacopy for backup's?

2009-08-25 Thread Moonbase

You're very welcome, Teus! I'm glad that someone else actually uses
Windows/Linux rsync in almost the same setup :-)

I recently switched from my 100 MBit/s to a 1 GBit network and must say
now it -really- shines! Just moving the -changes- within the files
across the network really pays off — after the initial copy, of course.
And I much agree that good old cp is much faster for the initial
backup! ;-)

Another hint: External (backup) USB discs should be NTFS-formatted.
This allows for swapping them between Windows and Linux systems without
getting into any character set troubles if you use extended characters
in filenames, like I do. The ntfs-3g driver for Linux seems to be stable
enough not to mess up anything — at least it has never let me down.

*Remember:* If you use the 'rsync solution from the wiki'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Backing_up_Your_Music), you
-need- to install the mentioned cygwin patch for Windows — otherwise
you'll end up with messed-up filenames! (For reasons lying within
cygwin, the filenames with extended characters will -look- messed-up in
DeltaCopy's rsync status window but will be fine on disc — and that's
what counts.)

Re: [slim] Anyone using Deltacopy for backup's?

2009-08-24 Thread Moonbase

Bert, if I understand correctly, you are trying to use rsync/DeltaCopy
for copying between two Windows machines?

I must admit that I have no experience yet using Win7 in this setup,
and for syncing between Windows machines there might be better
solutions.

Rsync is a well-known protocol in the Unix/Linux world, so using
DeltaCopy as a rsync -client- on Windows to copy to/from a -Linux
server- made much sense to me — and it's actually quite fast here, even
on an old 900 MHz P3 Linux server.

Rsync actually -does- checksum the files and only transmit the
differences — so if you update only a tag, only the -changes in the
file(s)- are transmitted. Unfortunately, on Windows with DeltaCopy, this
process seems to eat a lot of CPU resources — it's much faster on Linux
machines.

I assume that if you are running both a rsync server and a client on
Windows, this might account for the bad timings you gave.

Can anyone else give us some more info on using DeltaCopy's server
module under Windows?

I'm sure it can be made working, but it might be overkill for a
Windows/Windows copy, and use too many resources.

(I prefer using SqueezeBox Server on a Linux box, so I can mainly talk
about syncing between a Windows a client and the Linux server. I reused
an old 900 MHz Pentium 3 system as a music server, 768 MB RAM, 40 GB + 1
TB internal discs, Fedora 11 (command-line only) and VortexBox 0.8
software installed.)

[slim] A rant towards a rescue. Needed. NOW. ... From here to where?

2009-08-17 Thread Moonbase

In all earnestness, I start seeing the SqueezeBox product range go
down the wrong path. Having been a product manager myself for a long
time, I hear the alarm bells shrill for quite some time now.

As a developer, being enthusiastic for some time, I'm constantly losing
interest in cooperation, because the development paths seem unclear and
not well-defined, old bugs keep resurfacing, odd decisions are made (and
taken back).

The product itself (Duet and the Controller, mainly) keeps getting more
unusable with every update -- one starts getting anxious (What will
break this time?) instead of happily anticipating things getting better
and more usable -- and being able to USE it for what it's meant: An
enyojable way of listening and showing off your music.

Successful products are emotional products, remember? So why isn't
the emotion a good one, but frustration mostly?

Slimserver and the Squeezebox products have long kept you feeling that
you are at the top of current technology, running with the fast crowd,
simply owning and using the best you can possibly get. And be proud of
it. Albeit having a few minor problems, you simply KNEW these would be
gone soon -- and usually you'd get something better beyond all
expectations.

Here's how the current development looks to an outsider (i.e.,
someone who knows about product management, development, usability,
marketing, but also insists in keeping the standpoint of a
user/buyer) today:

- There is no clear path where to go. What are the goals, where is
  the target market?
- We keep adding glitz and pomp. Because we don't know how to focus
on the basic problems and hope the user won't mind lack of basic
functionality because there's so much nice stuff.
- Bugs long gone and repaired keep surfacing again. And again. Ideas
comes to mind, like Do they ever USE their stuff themselves? ...
Why the heck do we have to fight the character set wars again and
again since 30 years? Don't they ever learn that there ARE characters
  beyond 0-9 and A-Z?
- It's all too technical. I want MUSIC. And the BEST and most USABLE
way to handle it. Today, it's all about bug fixing, Perl programming,
product name changes, database issues no one understands (and which
they take back after investing so much efforts into a solution that's
worse than before -- and while they take back the changes to what we
got before, they break even what we HAD before!).
- Even (external) developers get frustrated -- after investing so
many countless hours into repairing things that get broken again next
day. (Yes, the code IS*great; yes, they have thought about almost
everything already; but they keep overlooking SIMPLE things over and
over again -- probably because no one has shown them that some things
ARE important to USERS. Even with Open Source, goals need to be
defined, and milestones met. And everyone in the team needs to know
where we all want to go.)
- Look at the new controller firmware. It LOOKS worse. It's
unusable beyond expectation. It needs more keystrokes for simple
functions. It doesn't behave logical or even consistent. BUT it has
overlaid screens that nobody needs, it overlaps badly rendered cover
images with status lines, it uses LARGE fonts so that you have to wait
for some information to scroll until -- in the middle of reading --
the screensaver pops in and you have to press yet another key ...
Aaaargh! It has a zillion effects that DISTRACT (instead of
FOCUSING) the user's attention, while lacking some basic
functionality. Oh well, and it has apps! Does anyone need apps
while the basics don't function yet? ... I doubt it.
- It's great to let the tech kiddies show off. And they can
actually be a very valuable resource -- if LEAD correctly. PLEASE,
Logitech, hire someone who knows about USABILITY. And probably how to
  manage a product line.
- It still IS (could be?) such a great product line. Don't throw it
  away like this.

This reads like a rant. It is. Because I still love the product and the
ideas behind it. (Emotion, remember?) I hope that the right people can
understand my current frustration. And ACT.

I really wouldn't like to see others winning in spite of having
higher prices and worse technology. But knowing what the customer wants.

Keep the promise! Even if it's only in our heads.

Thank you for reading.

Re: [slim] FLAC issues

2009-05-13 Thread Moonbase

Wild shot, but your FLAC further above shows an older version was used.
You might want to try upgrading your FLAC tool(s) to v1.2.1 and
re-encode one of the problem albums to see if it might be a FLAC bug. I
distinctly remember there was a bug in FLAC regarding encoding from
stdin when a WAV contained odd chunks #8212; and SC would (usually)
do exactly that: Convert your WAV to FLAC for transmission to the SB.

'FLAC Download link' (http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html)

Lossless re-compression (and updating to the latest FLAC version) of a
file can be done using the -flac- command-line tool like this:

Code:

flac abc.flac --force

(You can of course specify additional options.)

Not to forget that Genius doesn’t make real neutral mixes but

There -could- be an easy solution to this, by using -foobar2000- or

I (AGAIN) STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT SC SHOULD PREFER THE REPLAY GAIN VALUES

This would at least make more users happy, since they could have best

Andrew, any progress/news regarding MusicIP integration for Vortexbox?

I#8217;m currently playing with Vortexbox 0.5 on a spare PC, trying
out SC7.4-25724, a custom Jive and MIP headless 1.8.

Just wanted to remark that for Fedora/Vortexbox use, it might be wise
to modify the '\mmserver\ sample from the wiki'
as follows, so it supports use with -chkconfig- and -ntsysv-:

Code:

  #!/bin/bash

  # /etc/rc.d/init.d/mmserver
  #
  # Starts the MusicMagicServer daemon
  #
  # chkconfig: 345 79 31

  stop)
su - $USER -c $MUSICHOMEMusicMagicServer stop/dev/null
echo Stopped MusicMagicServer
exit
;;
  *)
  echo Usage: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mmserver { start | stop }
exit
;;
  esac

Copy it to -/etc/init.d/mmserver-, then do a

Code:

  chkconfig --level 345 mmserver on

and reboot. MusicIP headless should now start before SqueezeCenter and
stop after :-)

Re: [slim] Announcement: VortexBox 0.4 released

2009-03-31 Thread Moonbase

Sure, be happy to test :-)

You might want to somehow start a -genpuid- run for files just ripped,
so they can have the analysis data stored in their tags. I’d recommend
not trying to update the -autoload.m3lib- using genpuid 1.4 (it has a
bug) but instead store the analysis data inside the files, and when
finished, trigger a MusicIP cache rescan using the http API.

(You need a [free for personal use] MusicDNS key for genpuid to
operate.)

Something like:

Code:

genpuid (your key here) -r -archive -logex /storage/music/flac/ (path to
newly ripped files)

and

Code:

  http://localhost:10002/server/refresh

All this would also allow to get (almost) perfect tagging data ;-)

Try, for instance (on analyzed files):

Code:

genpuid (your key here) -r -ext=mb /storage/music/flac/ (path to files to
check)

... and you’ll end up with a beautiful XML file containing all relevant
tagging data for the file(s) selected, fresh from MusicBrainz!

Unfortunately not :-(

Filters in MIP are quite restrictive regarding which variables and
operators can be used, and how many conditions can be met. Also, they
don’t support power words and custom variables stored in their

Maybe that was the original reason to make power searches available
in the API like filters.

It would still be nice to have some integration for

- the free listen
- the streaming membership
- and the download membership

Oh well. Maybe I particularly like that they support FLAC downloads.
:-) Unlimited downloads for $10/month can be quite a bargain if you
like that kind of music. And the musicians get 50%, which I like.

Re: [slim] iPod Genius similar to MusicIP

2009-03-25 Thread Moonbase

It#8217;s actually Power Searches (you need an activated key for
this, i.e. the paid-for MIP #8212; well worth the money, btw).

When using the GUI, you#8217;d input something like
?GENRE CONTAINS \TRANCE\ BPM = 140 BPM 150[/B]
OR
[B]?SEVENTIES GENRE CONTAINS \ROCK\ ALBUMTYPE = \LIVE\
into the Search field (the ? at the beginning denotes a power
search). Be aware my examples use extra keywords and fields I have set
up in the MIP library.

When using the http API, these can be used like filters. See also 'MIP
http protocol' (http://www.musicip.com/mixer/httpprotocol.jsp). the
first of above could (for instance) be encoded for the API as

Code:

http://localhost:10002/api/mix?filter=?genre%20contains%20%22trance%22%20%20bpm%20%3E=%20140%20%20bpm%20%3C%20150

in order to get a Trance Mix.

I second that. And you can use the GUI anytime, even while running
headless, just switch off the GUI’s API Server by unchecking the little
checkbox under File - Preferences - Services - [_] API. (And TiVo and

Looking back at mp3PRO — which -was- a nice idea for low-bandwidth

Looks like some last struggles to run with the pack, coming much too

Re: [slim] MusicIP: Can't get it to work on my new PC with SC

2009-03-23 Thread Moonbase

I#8217;d also suggest starting out -simple-. I have played with a lot
of MusicIP GUI and headless versions over time, and since they are
still quite buggy, always ruefully reverted to using the v1.8.1b GUI as
the server. (This is the main reason why I currently run my live
system on Windows instead of running it on my Linux box.)

Re bugs you might want to check my (and others') posts over at the
MusicIP forums.

I#8217;d suggest the following strategy:

- Clean Windows install (XP+SP2 at least, SP3 if you want)
- Clean SC install, using either the latest release or the newest
  beta.
- Clean install of MusicIP GUI v1.8.1b (including your key to enable
extra functions), setting the GUI#8217;s API service to port 10002
  and enabling that.
- Test thoroughly, always start MIP GUI -before- SC. Be aware that
once having set to enable the API service, MIP will -remember- that
  setting on startup.
- To come nearer to what SC does, you might also want to start the
Windows MIP GUI with the commandline options like:
  *C:\Program Files\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer\MusicMagicMixer.exe
  -playlistcontrols -albumsbyname -rgtrack*
  where

  - --playlistcontrols- will enable extra playlist controls
  - --albumsbyname- will (mostly) avoid the one album per track
problem we also had in SC when VA compilation tracks are in
different folders. Be aware this -only- functions on a complete new
rebuild of the Library Cache! So you might want to completely
clear the library (not by deleting it! but by marking all songs,
deleting -them- in the GUI and follow this with an Add to
Library).
  - --rgtrack- (or --rgalbum-) which will enable Replay Gain support
for playback within MIP

- The port 10002 and port 10003 suggestion made by SpiceFly is
mainly for people who want to run -both- APIs: headless -plus- GUI,
while I cannot see why anyone would do that. Maybe it#8217;s just so
that people who accidently have the API service in the GUI enabled
won#8217;t run into conflicts with their headless running in the
background. I#8217;d recommend sticking with only port 10002 and
  just running -one- of them.
- Be aware that MusicIP (at least v1.8.1b, don#8217;t know about the
1.9 betas) still has problems with Unicode characters in filenames on
Windows, so you should maybe restrict these to ISO-8859-1 (or your
Windows charset). As far as I understood Wendell, this should be
fixed in the upcoming 1.9 release.
- Install and try out a headless version. I recommend also starting
out with the headless that comes with 1.8.1b. Be sure to -disable-
the API in the MusicIP GUI, so that they won#8217;t conflict.
- Unfortunately, the headless versions from MusicIP -all- have
several bugs #8211; that#8217;s why I still use the API from the
1.8.1b GUI which is the one that has the least bugs. Still you might
get a good result but you probably also want to try out some headless
versions from the 1.9beta5 and/or 1.9beta6. Be aware that the headless
Windows .exe files are different but show the same (or none) version
  resources, so you should be very clear which version is which #8230;
- The headless and GUI use a different Library Cache, and you
-should not- try to copy it over, at least not if you#8217;re using
what they call chunks or libraries per device! (Headless
doesn#8217;t understand these, only the GUI versions does.)
- I#8217;d recommend staying away from the 1.9beta5 or 1.9beta6 GUI
versions -if- you use custom database entries #8212; these will
mess up display and/or database horribly in this case. (I use BPM,
INITIALKEY, RELEASESTATUS, RELEASETYPE, LANGUAGE and so on in my
MusicIP library, for easy power searches.)
- I -really, really- suggest storing the analysis data (musical
fingerprints) in the files. So far, I#8217;ve seen this functioning
  flawlessly with MP3 (ID3v2.3 tags using ISO-8859-1 or UTF-16
character set) and FLAC files. It -might- corrupt ID3v2.4 tags, as
  far as I remember!
But if you have the right files with the right tags, saving
analysis data can save you hours and hours of frustrating
  re-calculations.
- You might find some more help from Philip Meyer, he seems to use
1.9beta6 with some success together with SC.

Well so much for my experiences with MusicIP. Which I wouldn#8217;t
want to miss #8212; never again. It has its bugs but is a -great- tool
if all bugs are circumvented.

Good luck!

Re: [slim] iPod Genius similar to MusicIP

2009-03-23 Thread Moonbase

A good friend of mine gave this new iTunes Genius a thorough test (I
wouldn’t have iTunes on my machines, and no Quicktime), and we both
agreed that MusicIP has the much uglier UI (at least with iTunes, the
standalone MIP Mixer is ok) but created -much- better mixes.

And of course it’s indefinitely more flexible. Just think of power
searches and the power tools.

To be honest, instead of getting Yet Another Lame Mixer into SC, we’d
much prefer to get a capability to store/retrieve MusicIP power
searches into SC.

SC, I tried having SC look at the network share rather than the local
drive. But, even when it does this and the playlists only contain
references from \\computer_name\... SC still sees a few random tracks
 in X:\.

Its either/or. You must be sure that all filenames follow the same
convention, either X:\music\#8230; or \\computer\x\music\#8230;.
Unfortunately, due to the extra overhead incurred when using UNC paths,
some software tries to resolve these into mapped drive paths. Maybe
this is why you still see some X:\music\#8230; entries. If working
on a machine that has this drive -mapped- (instead of a locally
attached drive), you might want to consider -unmapping- it and using
the same UNC path as for the other machines.

SC and other software have to have a means for uniquely identifying a
file #8212; SC (and MusicIP, btw) use the file path for this, so they
will always see X:\music\filename.ext as being different to
\\mycomputer\x\music\filename.ext.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox radio for a car?

When Solid State Discs become cheaper (still), having a little
Atom-based SC and a Duet combo in the car might become an interesting
option. (Shock-proof) Or maybe just SC+SqueezeSlave+SBC and play from
the li'l Atom PC to the car stereo.

The PC could even roam for access points, in order to get SN.
I#8217;ve seen open (or cheap) access points on camping sites...

Syncing the music between the home SC and the car SC could then be
done via WLAN and rsync while the car was parked in front of your
house.

Eventually, someone might even come up with a unit that fits into the
car stereo opening and has a nice (aka SB3) display...

2009-03-01 Thread Moonbase

Someone has to do all the work. I understand the measurements in regard
to the spamming that went on here. If a scheme like this is really
needed, I think a working combination might be:

- Links to slimdevices and logitech pages should -always- work. These
are usually links to other threads, the wiki, bugzilla, and product
  pages.
- Other links should be auto-enabled when a user has reached some
status. Most often, the post count is used for that in other forums,
either a fixed one like 50 or one associated with a status like
  Senior Member.
- Setting single (misbehaving) users to moderated status should by
now be supported in any forum software.

Re: [slim] Last.fm, worth becoming a paid member?

2009-02-28 Thread Moonbase

I was just contemplating the same … but for € 2,50/month I’d somehow
like to get not only my »loved tracks« but playlists and »my stations«
too. So I wait.

What I like is that

- they use MusicIP to get similar tracks (which I also like at home)
- their tags function well
- you can skip to the next track using SB and SBC remotes

Re: [slim] Why do posts suddenly require moderator approval?

2009-02-28 Thread Moonbase

I’ll have to watch it – it happens on some, not all of my posts. Maybe
it really has to do something with attachments or *odd wording* used.

Hm. Sorry, Michael, I tried to behave a little in Bugzilla but I
didn’t realize someone would have problems reading posts with odd
characters like guillemets or typographical hyphens, ellipsis,
apostrophe, etc. here in the forums?

The bad thing is I sometimes don't realize ... been using typographical
characters since so many years (and actually use a special keyboard
driver for that), so my fingers just automatically reach for the
correct symbols... Its quite hard for me to deliberately ignore
everything I'm trained to use as correct and switch back to the old
ASCII symbols... Sorry again.

gharris999;401395 Wrote:
What's your sense of how well MusicIP works with classical music?

Unfortunately I only have -very- few classical titles. I would expect
good results but you might want to ask someone that really uses MIP
with classical music. Or give -last.fm- a try — they use MusicIP’s
-MusicDNS- service (plus a little more) behind the scenes, so you might
get a feasible approximation.

gharris999;401395 Wrote:
I'm guessing that with 1T worth of flacs with more than 125 days of play
time, the finger printing processing time would be a pretty serious
 investment.

Indeed. About 20k files took around 7 days here … (heavily loaded
Windows machine) It’s faster when they know about the titles already,
but if you have music that’s new to their database, calculation really
eats up processor time.

gharris999;401395 Wrote:
Is there any way to finger print a given flac at rip time? Or does
the entire collection need to be printed in one go?

Well shortly after. The Windows -MusicIP Mixer GUI- will react to
directory changes for folders you can set, and thus automatically start
fingerprinting in the background. You have the option to set thread
priority for that, plus the option to automatically save the analysis
data in the tags (which I’d -highly recommend-).

You can also use the command-line -genpuid- tool in Linux to
fingerprint all or part of your collection. (Can also save to tags.)

gharris999;401395 Wrote:
I guess what I'm asking is this: is there a musicip tag that can
calculated and then stored in the file which musicip could subsequently
 read for its db?

Exactly that :-)

Couldn#8217;t live without it :-)

Generates acoustic fingerprints for uniquely detecting music, uses
these to create sound-alike mixes. (Also the system used behind the
scenes with the MusicBrainz database, and BBC and last.fm use it.)

AND it#8217;s supported by SqueezeCenter, so they#8217;d make a
perfect match on VortexBox!

More info:

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2009-02-23 Thread Moonbase

Why Moonbase?

History:

- -Not- from Moonbase Alpha One. (I only came to know about that
  years later.)
- Actually from a 1969 U.K. TV series called UFO. My parents
scolded me, I loved it. The Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence
Organisation (SHADO) was located beneath a movie studio in England,
and they had a -Moonbase- #8211; all the girls had pink hair and
  silver outfits.
- Later on my nick for citizens band radio #8211; »Stardust« was
  already taken, so I remembered UFO#8217;s »Moonbase« and it#8217;s
  been my nick ever since #8230;

Since that time (for almost fourty years now!) I#8217;ve been
constantly using this nickname all over the place.

Later refinements and new explanations arose, like:

- Watched Neil Armstrong setting foot onto the Moon live #8211; the
day after my tenth birthday. I then believed that manned spaceflight
would become reality much faster. (Not realizing it was mainly
politics that time.) So I was somehow expecting a -real- Moonbase.
- Always believed that standing back two steps (or 238,714 miles, in
this case) sometimes just gives a better perspective... (From up
there, I could never understand the concept of little ants crawling
on this little globe#8217;s surface, them taking a pencil, drawing
lines on the surface they call »borders« and fighting for these with
their lives. I still don#8217;t get it. No wonder the Aliens stay
away from a backwardly planet like ours#8230;)
- Some think I#8217;m much too idealistic and have too romantic
ideas, like everyone could live in peace with each other, money that
goes into military should go into food, a healthy planet, and manned
spaceflight, and there could always be »win-win situations« between
suppliers and customers. Well, I tried to do my share in business
life, but I fear it was way too little. So they said I#8217;m like
the man in the moon, meaning something like a dreamer here.

The avatar is actually me, sitting on a bollard in some small harbour
in Northern Germany. For fun, I sometimes claim it was photographed
while I was doing a radio show, but actually I#8217;m just watching a
seagull. And dreaming of a better world :-)

Re: [slim] Software Player Synchronisation Rallying call!

2009-02-15 Thread Moonbase

I love listening to the same songs with my gf, about 250 mi across the
country. So we checked out the current sync options again yesterday
using SC 7.4-25017. When using the phone, I have about 350kbps upstream
left on my ADSL line, so we set her software players to 128kbps
downsampling (LAME, Q7).

- -Playing songs from the local music library, using both SoftSqueeze
and SqueezePlay:- Works quite nice (max. .5s difference as far as one
can tell on the phone [which again has delay of course]). No real
glitches, only very occasional brief Waiting to sync messages on
both SBC and software players. (i.e. every 20 minutes or so)
- -Playing Deezer, using both SS+SP:- Totally messes up her software
player and my receiver, up to the point of having to restart her
software player, and needing to »cold restart« (pulling the plug, the
front button wouldn#8217;t work anymore) my Duet receiver. *Maybe*
due to trying to access Deezer »Soul« which currently doesn#8217;t
  play anyway here.
- -Playing a podcast:- No sound with SoftSqueeze, nothing on receiver
while synced. Receiver could play it when unsynced, SoftSqueeze
couldn#8217;t. SqueezePlay on her side could also play it, only when
  unsynced.

So my »overall experience« is that both SoftSqueeze and SqueezePlay
seem to sync »okay« when playing local files, but both behave
problematic when trying to sync remote files/streams to a hardware
player. I could never get two SqueezePlay#8217;s to sync, but syncing
one Softsqueeze with one SqueezePlay seems to work on local files.
SqueezePlay seems to have slight advantages over SoftSqueeze regarding
bitrates/file formats it#8217;s able to play.

I agree that trying to »remote sync« over a low-bandwidth Internet
connection with additional transcoding used is probably the »worst
case« #8212; but as you can see, it has its uses ;-)

Re: [slim] Is there a simple way to adjust L/R balance on Squeezebox?

2009-02-14 Thread Moonbase

Sorry for updating an old post, but I just ran into the same issue:
Needing a balance control.

I’d love to use InguzEQ, but it’s simply unusable on a 1.8GHz P4 PC,
and I’m planning to put SC onto a Linux machine eventually.

Many people use SB3 or Duet Receivers with -just- active speakers, and
not everyone uses Windows or has the processing power for InguzEQ (NAS
users!).

I really think that a product that can be used as a pure »easy start«
consumer product with an upgrade path to an audiophile setup should
have a means for balance control, and maybe even a simple 3- or 5-band
equalizer -built in-.

Since I’ve seen very fine design in the SB product line, I’d be
astonished if (at least) a balance control couldn’t be done in firmware
in the hardware units (SB2/SB3/Duet Receiver/Transporter) and only
-controlled- via the remotes (IR/SBC), like the volume is now.

Integrating this feature into the core would allow anyone to start with
a good quality »beginner setup« (i.e. SqueezeBox + active speakers) and
allow a perfect upgrade path to an »audiophile setup« later on, without
compromising quality. (Like volume, these »extra features« could
probably be disabled in SqueezeCenter Settings.)

Logitech: Read »increase sales«.

Re: [slim] No more Squeezebox Classic in Europe? or just sold out at the moment?

2009-02-12 Thread Moonbase

Yeah … where’s all the »sales ethics« gone? *sigh*

Regarding ethics: I decided to give an eBay offer a try now: Squeezebox
Duet, used 14 days, savings about € 50 from original price, including
original receipt from the buyer, warranty left: 23½ months.

What can I say? Transaction done in 4 days total, like new (even all
the plastic stuff around each and every item), all original parts
included, great packaging, everything worked. Looked more like been
used 14 minutes instead of 14 days. And nice communication in between:
»Your money received«, »sent package today«, »enjoy your buy« and so
on.

I wonder why that guy ever sold his Duet — thanks anyway!

So now I’m a (very!) happy owner of a »brand-new« Duet. -And- haven’t
totally lost my confidence in ethical sales and win-win situations.
Best buy I made for the last 5 years or so.

Re: [slim] No more Squeezebox Classic in Europe? or just sold out at the moment?

2009-02-11 Thread Moonbase

FYI: I got my »full refund« today (no interest, of course) — after 70
days.

Seems there are many »teaser offers« out there, no real merchandise.

I should have been warned, since the article appeared almost € 30
cheaper when »found« via price searching engines like billiger.de,
guenstiger.de, ciao.de and the like. When ordering via phone (and
asking for availability!), a much higher price was confirmed — not on
the phone but on the written order confirmation. After complaining,
they told me I must order via the price searching engine, it would give
»special prices« only available online. (Yeah, to lure the customers …)

In my opinion, it somehow invalidates the reliability of the price
searching engines, if anyone can make a »deal« with them to have their
items appear »cheaper« than the competitor’s pricing.

Oh, well. Live and learn :-)

are played as they should be. Did you try a Clear library and rescan
everything?

Re Jean Michel Jarre:
There are different fields (also called tag frames) for things like
artist, title, album title, etc. In most tagging software, these
have similar names.

I have this album tagged as (excerpt):

ALBUMARTIST=Jean Michel Jarre
ALBUMARTISTSORT=Jarre, Jean Michel
ARTIST=Jean Michel Jarre
ARTISTSORT=Jarre, Jean Michel
ALBUM=Oxygène
YEAR=1976
ORIGYEAR=1976

The tracks have different names of course:
TITLE=Oxygène, Part 1
and so on.

Re: [slim] No more Squeezebox Classic in Europe? or just sold out at the moment?

2009-02-05 Thread Moonbase

To keep everyone updated:

Today, after 2 months and 2 days, an email arrived stating the article
'Logitech Squeezebox black' is not available anymore while it is still
being 'advertised'
(at a reduced price) with delivery time between a day and a week on
their site.

*German buyers:* I'd recommend to stay away from -KM Elektronik AG-
when trying to buy a SqueezeBox.

*Logitech officials:* -Please advise an offical source- to buy from in
Germany -who actually delivers- — I really want my SB Classic now!
Terms of payment: Paypal, prepaid to a European bank or giro debit.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the hint, but I don’t believe things like Availability:

Looks to me like everyone collects payments to play with customer's
money for a while, and when enough people have ordered and sent their
money, they order at the manufacturer who probably starts building the
units then …

[slim] German Resellers? Delivery problems? (Logitech has no SB3 in German online store)

2009-01-19 Thread Moonbase

I tried to order a SqueezeBox 3 (Classic) from a company called 'KM
Elektronik AG' (http://www.kmelektronik.de/) ('Product page'
on December 3rd, 2008. It was promised to be available on 2008-12-10,
and delivered immediately after. So I ordered it (prepaid) since at
that time they seemed the ones to have the fastest delivery for the
lowest price.

Unfortunately, my SqueezeBox is STILL not available, they have my money
now since 2008-12-04, and keep insisting like yes, we know, but our
supplier (Logitech?) cannot deliver. I've heard that so often now that
I really start getting pissed. It SHOULD have been a Christmas present
to myself, since I wanted to re-arrange for Christmas and the New Year
party. No fun. Instead, I keep getting emails saying delivery in 4-5
days, a few days later one that says delivery in -1 to 0 days, then
weeks without response. (They told me on Dec 26 (!) that the product
has been ORDERED (!) and will take 4-6 weeks delivery *grrr*)

To be fair, I must say that KM Elektronik are usually known as a
reliable supplier with fast turnaround. But if I had known that, I
could have spent the extra €*20,– and buy it through Amazon as well…

Q1: Are there delivery problems to Germany, in Germany, or to this
company?

Q2: Is the SB3 not available anymore? I couldn't find it in the
Logitech Germany online store?!

Q3: Is there an official list of German distributors/resellers so I
could pick another, more reliable one?

Re: [slim] Replaygain - Anyone know about it?

2009-01-14 Thread Moonbase

Yep. It#8217;s for real, has been enhanced lately (for non-clipping),
and many (if not most) of us probably use it every day :-) And just in
case your friend asks: Yes, it will do -both- »audiophile« (album) and
»radio« (track) gain, and even has an additional (selectable) »smart
gain« (automagic selection between track and album gain).

Also, SC even supports »SoundCheck«, the Apple/iTunes variant of Replay
Gain, and the original RVA system. So you get the best of all worlds.

Re: [slim] streaming 2 mp3s as left and right

2008-12-31 Thread Moonbase

Guess that won#8217;t be easy, but you can *easily* stream TWO
different (even mono) streams to two different players/locations! Since
SC can handle separate streams per player plus has great transcoding
possibilities, you could set up two very low-bandwith mono streams for
your and your wife#8217;s listening pleasure.

This would only require the already-built-in features, and be easily
done.

Re: [slim] Renaming album titles

2008-12-27 Thread Moonbase

SC is a great -Playing System- but should never touch whatever it gets.
I feed it with data also used for broadcasting, and I'd get -really-
upset if it tried to mess around with tags that have been manually
refined over a period of 10 years now. What it can do in its
database—great. But -never- in the original data.

-No one would probably expect their turntables to repair a scratched
LP—so why should SC repair bad audio/tagging data?-

To be honest, I’m delighted that product management and the developers
have seen that point of view, and honour it.

And anyway, there's still internet radio. Most use high compression to
stand out (like many newer CDs, unfortunately), so expect a huge
loudness shock if switching from RG'ed music library to some internet
radios. Show me how to add RG tags to radio stations please :-)

There could of course be some setting per station, thinking of it.
(Which would add other complications and is totally off-topic anyway.)

Re: [slim] New usb hard drives.

2008-12-18 Thread Moonbase

Actually, yes. 3 IS a VERY wise choice. (For both backup and kinfolk
relations.)

My experience also shows #8230;

- Keep away from nice-looking Apple design drives (or actually all
drives that have a too small housing, (almost) no air vents, and
plastic casing). Personally, I#8217;ve had -very- bad experiences
with LaCie units. (Regarding technical reliability, -not- dealer
service#8212;getting them exchanged was no problem, but 3 times in a
row all data gone is BAD.)
- Look for drives with a fan, if the noise doesn#8217;t disturb you
  too much.
- Prefer sturdy aluminium cases over plastic.
- Always use the drive in the upright position on the stand. Air
should (on most of them) be able to flow from bottom front to upper
rear#8212;don#8217;t accidentally use them 180° rotated. They
usually tend to heat up too much, very quickly.
- Don#8217;t place them in the sun or near a heater. Leave a minimum
of about 5 room to left, right, up so airflow is good. (No putting it
in the drawer or squeezed in between the books on your bookshelf.)

Lack of airflow and overheating really is the cause for early death on
most of these external drives. Most are built for the »mass market«, so
they must be cheap and the manufacturer wants to sell you a new one
soon. Result: Design near the limits.

Interestingly, another cause for early death *seems* to be switching
these thingies on and off too much. I have two here that haven#8217;t
been switched off for about 2 years now, are only medium-hot and in
regular use (daily backup of music collection plus heavy use on the
music files). Not ONE glitch and SMART shows still 100% good. Friends
have the SAME type of units, all broken in the meantime. It may be a
coincidence, but I still think it#8217;s better for drives to run at
all times and at about the same temperature, as opposed to being
switched on and off every few hours.

I agree with bobkoure in saying: Get 1TB instead of 500GB. They give
much more bang for the buck, and are about as reliable as the 500GB
now.

If budget matters, I#8217;d start out with 2x 1TB. Backup IS
important#8212;at this size, you won#8217;t ever even DO one if you
haven#8217;t got an identical drive to back up!

Eventually, I#8217;d try to follow pfarrell#8217;s suggestion using 3
drives. His is really a VERY wise suggestion.

Another one: Try to get all two (three) SAME model and manufacturer.
It#8217;s just GREAT being able to swap parts in case a power supply
dies, the casing breaks or whatever!

2008-12-18 Thread Moonbase
