Re: [slim] Speaker for bathroom
I think I'd be looking for a set of small powered/active speaker (that is, speakers with a built-in amplifier). Depending on the dampness levels and ventilation in the room, it might make sense to look for speakers are either waterproof or at least built for damp environments. There is a product category generally called "outdoor speakers" that are designed to be installed on decks, patios and gardens. The catch here is that these are mostly unpowered designs. If you don't find an active outdoor speaker to your liking, also consider using a portable or home "Bluetooth" speaker. Although products in this category usually carry the "Bluetooth" moniker, most all of them have a standard 3.5mm stereo aux input. There are an enormous variety of models available, and many of them are designed to be waterproof. As a bonus, they usually have rechargeable on-board batteries, giving you a dual-use option. As far as specific models: I have an (older model) TDK A33 that works great. Re: [slim] Music Backup in the Cloud
You might want to take a look at the various online backup service providers out there: Crashplan, Backblaze, etc. They offer good services at reasonable prices ($50-60/year). If you're keeping local and remote backups of multiple TBs of data, these prices are are competitive with the costs of buying and replacing your own backup drives. Most of them do offer seamless encryption - their software and servers take care of this without user intervention. Many offer to use keys that only you hold, meaning the service can't decrypt anything without you. There is the issue of that first big upload sync job. This does rely on good upload speeds, or the use of "seeding" service in which you mail in a physical drive that they'll load as the first backup set. I've always been a roll-my-own guy, using my own drives, scripting and scheduling native sync utilities (hooray for rsync!) and so on. But, it's really gotten to the point where this isn't advantageous. The paid backup providers offer great service, reasonable rates, and much more durable protection that I can provide myself. Take a look. We've watched mostly TV shows: Alpha House and Orphan Black. At first glance the music service is a little underwhelming. The seem to be focused on big name artists, and selected tracks. Not my area of interest. Maybe it will improve. One nice thing they did was to preload a Library page in the mobile app with music I'd purchased on physical formats over the last few years. Many content providers using Flash-based players will go to great lengths to hide the actual stream URLs (using a Flash-based player being the first length). While it can be difficult-to-impossible to extract the stream from player markup and scripts, it's generally possible to figure it out using a network sniffer. Beats Music has now officially released their launch date: January 21, 2014. I'm a MOG premium subscriber, but have seen no official information about a shutdown. I have the same questions. They're not releasing any info at all. Maybe they'll run them together for a while, but I have to believe MOG's days are ultimately numbered. I agree. Which leads to the real nut of the question: How well will the Beats Music applications support the way I like to use the service? My most prominent modes of usage are: 1) Ad-hoc listening to tracks that I'm reading about. I mostly use the mobile apps for this. 2) Also on mobile: Pre-downloading full albums, as a buffer - but also as a reminder/favorites list. Listening from this list later on as I'm wanting to choose from records I've already selected, rather than the complete universe of offerings. Sort of a time-shifted self-curation. 3) On Squeezebox: searching for an album and playing sync'd throughout the house. I'm hopeful that the BM app (terrible initials!) will have some features that will support 1) and 2). I suspect that 3) may be a goner, unless there are APIs that a helpful community developer could leverage to bring BM into the SB ecosystem. --rt ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

From what I understand, there are also issues with digital fidelity when using AirPlay. Audio-only AirPlay streams are encoded using Apple Lossless for transmission, regardless of the original source format. So, the AirPlay receiver should get the same bitstream that the sender's DAC would see. But, at least in the case of the AppleTV device, there are only digital audio outputs (optical) and that output only supports 48kHz. So, all 44.1kHz audio is resampled to 48kHz before output. And, you need an outboard DAC or you will be relying on the DAC in your receiver/amp. I don't know what the other AirPlay receivers are doing as far as transmission encoding, internal decoding, resampling and D/A conversion, but I'd want to see these details before committing to a solution like this for my main system. I do own an AppleTV, and occasionally stream audio and video from an iPhone or iPad for playback, but this is mainly just for convenience in playing back something I've found on the web. Most of these sources are *far* from pristine. I've had a lot more success than Cipro with my SB's. I have 2 SB2s, a Boom and a Radio. I keep them sync'd up most of the time, with the Boom and Radio playing together most of the day every day. I listen to a mix of my own library (~100k tracks mixed MP3 and FLAC files) and internet radio streams. I run my own SS. I have a pretty fast and reliable internet connection, and use a combination of wired, wi-fi and powerline connections to the various SB's. I use iPend on my iPhone and iPad. I don't try to use my Radio as an alarm clock. And everything is pretty darn reliable. There have been various sync issues over the years, and the server has gone through some up and down stages of quality, but in general we use our SBs an awful lot and they generally just work. We love our SB system. I would like to see some updated players (modernized Boom, faster hardware for Touch and a new SB4) as well as some new features (MOG!!), and I think I might over the next year. But even if Logitech disappeared tomorrow, I think I'd get at least a few more years of happy usage out of my system. Re: [slim] NEW SB hardware?
I have an AppleTV v2. It does indeed require an outboard DAC before it can render analog audio. An outboard DAC with an optical input no less. If I wanted to use the AppleTV as an audio output device, I would need to either: Using TV interface - Turn on Stereo Turn on DAC Select AppleTV input on DAC Turn on TV Select AppleTV input Wake up AppleTV Navigate to Music options Choose and Play Using AirPlay - Turn on Stereo Turn on DAC Select AppleTV input on DAC Wake up the AppleTV (it sleeps) Grab a laptop or iPhone and fire up a music player Navigate to music, choose and play Select AppleTV AirPlay output Granted some of these steps may be avoidable (stereo already on or auto-sensing, DAC has only one input, etc.), but this is still a lot of switching and selecting just to play a few tracks. I'm not at all excited about the option of using a 50 plasma TV for an audio controller UI. Seems ridiculous. And you still don't get sync. And I don't know about the audio quality implications of AirPlay - does it do lossless? (certainly not FLAC), is there compression in the transmission?, etc. I don't really see this as a big use case for the AppleTV until Apple adds analog outs and gets serious about simplifying usage. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Any prospect of an MLB app?
Nah, this is different. Sirius/XM is paying for the right to deliver the content to their subscribers, and charge their subscribers for that content. MLB only gets paid by Sirius/XM, not the subscribers. That's why the big money is required. Logitech wouldn't be buying the content and reselling to customers. It would just be offering one more technology channel by which customers could purchase content directly from MLB. Squeezebox owners would pay MLB directly for their subscriptions. Logitech would just provide a player that would work on the SB platform. A good analogy would be Apple. Apple sells iPhones. Customers buy the iPhone MLB app (with bundled audio subscription). MLB gets their cut of the App Store sale and that's all. In our case, Logitech just gets the profit from the sale of additional SBs to baseball fans. MLB just gets the audio subscription revenue. I think the Block Incoming Connections security feature may be interfering with Internet radio streams. This morning, I rebooted my SBS computer and took a look at my SBS v7.5.1 security settings (SBS web interface - Settings - Advanced - Security). Block Incoming Connections had been set to Do not block. I changed this to Block and added these Allowed IP Addresses for my local network IP range and localhost: 192.168.*,127.0.0.1. I then switched to the main (non-settings) web UI, chose one of my SB players (a Boom, sync'd with a Radio), chose Favorites (where I have my Internet radio stations saved) and tried to play a stream, which failed to play. I then changed the Block Incoming Connections settings back to Do not block and tried again. The stream played. I toggled the block setting a few more times trying different streams. The results were consistent: when SBS was set to Block streams would not play. Has anybody else seen this behavior? Given how the Block feature is implemented, does it make sense that this would be happening? But the point is, don't assume that you know the demograhpics. Maybe you have some real marketing data, or could get something that MySpace might share with a potential partner or advertiser. The real question for me is: how are users going to go about finding, picking, building playlists and/or streams of music from this service? Does this discover/choose/play interaction work without the MySpace web UI? How are these use cases exposed into the SC menus? Is there an exposed API that supports this? I _do not_ use the /mir switch for these automated runs. Rather, these commands use switches that enable straight one way copies. Nothing is lost, but some cruft will build up on the destination disk. My scanner process seems to be dying before it can update the artist info in the slimserver database. Two thoughts on this: Slim may continue to co-brand or solely brand a portion of their lines. Or they might decide to define a new brand for their high-end offerings. So the Transporter might be the Logitech Transporter, it might something else entirely. After all, the Harmony remotes are still branded under that name. The RD costs of the Transporter are sunk. And that product is an asset that Logitech has just paid for. Open source development is unlikely to provide that as it tends to build products that match the community's requirements, not the mass market's. This is not necessarily the case. Positive leadership in areas such as feature support and UI design can guide even the most raucous community to a usable outcome. Firefox is a good example. Also consider that the server is eminently skinnable, and would allow customizations for divergent user classes. You are also less likely to get support from that community now that it is to generate returns for anomymous major shareholders and not company founders. But community work still supports the community of users. Add a new feature then enjoy it yourself and enjoy the accolades of the other users. I would assume therefore that more in-house design and productisation is required - that would be the route I'd take. SlimDevices is already doing the bulk of this in-house. I'd actually like to see the server software get more consumer friendly, I'd feel more comfortable recommending it to friends. I wouldn't contribute freely to that myself though - Logitech are a rich company... And when rich companies join forces with a visionary community good things may come to be. Flash UI -- (was) Re: [slim] Re: Stereophile's visit to Sonos
Proposition: Flash isn't Evil. (or Good.) It's just a technology. What we're really talking about, generically, are Rich Internet Applications. Which basically describes a client app that can run almost anywhere, has all the pluses of a browser based app, but is better at doing things like data persistence, complex UI controls, etc. and doesn't repaint it's entire interface with every user interaction. There are a whole slew of new, enabling technologies landing in the toolkits of developers. OpenLazlo and Adobe Flex to name a couple. These are developer-centric (re: not just for designers) tools for building RIAs. The Flash player becomes a container environment for RIAs. Some of the tools can also output to DHTML (Ajax). The Flash 9 container has some interesting capabilities. Besides doing the background data thing it can also run outside of a browser and participate in event based message queues. Take a look at the demos over at OpenLaszlo and Adobe: http://www.openlaszlo.org/demos http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/?tab:samples=1 --rt ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Michaelwagner wrote: I was explaining why I have a knee-jerk reaction to Flash, and why I have a hard time considering it a real development environment. Your reaction is understandable, but you might just as well denigrate HTML, Photoshop or the printing press. They're just authoring tools. Up until more recent versions the Flash tools consisted of two pieces: Flash Studio and Flash Player. The Flash Studio product was built for designers. It has basic 2D vector drawing tools and a timeline based animation scheme. It does support scripting, and you can build application UI in it, but that's not really what it was optimized for. And, yes, many crimes against eyeballs were committed. Though I've also seen some very impressive work built in that tool. Kvetch if you must, but all of that is yesterday's news. In my mind, the technology has found a purpose. Things progressed, and the ability to script the player became more impressive. The makers added functions to support data interchange with a server. Server components and methods were developed to ease that side of the development task. After some time, the makers seemed to realize that these application UI capabilities would be much more valuable than the animation capabilities. Macromedia/Adobe built out their set of tools, server frameworks and player with this in mind. Along came a new IDE based on the Eclipse project that is most definitely a real development environment. And a second generation of server tools. All of these pieces together constitute the technology being marketing as Flex. Flex's capabilities comprise a pretty complex story. MM/Adobe are making a noble attempt to explain it, but I'm not sure they've hit their stride yet. A lot of the information they're putting out is either strategic/marketing or technical nuts and bolts. But it won't be too long before some really great work is done with this tool. Developers will start wondering how did they do that and get interested. OpenLazslo is an open source equivalent set of tools and equally exciting. Personally, I can't wait to see what people do with these tools. Myself included. And who knows, it may provide a basis for a better SS. Solution actually turned out to be getting better power to the router. I was a bit torn between that and the DIY small box solution. I would have liked to have the extra horsepower to give the option of running a better performing SlimServer on the storage box. In the end, I went for the ease of setup and am happy. I know I would have spent a good deal of time getting the DIY box configured. One option you might consider is going with a 3x400GB drive config. Price should be similar. At the cost of a bit of storage today you'll get room to grow and one less drive device to fail. --rt ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Re: MLB.com gameday audio on a SqueezeBox?
I voted for this as well. Radio (audio) is the best way to enjoy baseball. This would be a fantastic enhancement, and a sure way to sell some Squeezeboxes to baseball fans. --rt ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Re: MLB.com gameday audio on a SqueezeBox?
Any idea what the streaming technology is this year? They've used Real in the past, but I thought I'd read where they'd signed a new deal. Can't recall who the provider was, or what formats the streams would be in. That would make a big difference in LOE for the SN. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

That's good news as far as SN feasibility. But bad news for my idea of tuning in via the Nokia 770 with audio out to my receiver. Re: [slim] Re: Ready NAS NV vs. Terastation Pro vs. Terastation vs. ??? (Storage Solution)
Please don't misinterpret my post. Installation and configuration was a breeze. And performance is good. This is a very slick product. It /is/ technology. There is a lot to potentially go wrong, and it has to get along with other gear. Most of the support threads on the Infrant forums show good interactions with the company and have happy endings. In most cases, the fault and the fix seem to be with associated equipment. In my case, it was the router's fault. Or more accurately, the router's wall wart's fault. Others have had issues with bad cabling, NICs, NIC drivers, etc. Just the nature of the beast. For most users, I'm guessing this is their first foray into GigE. I give Infrant credit for corralling a host of potential issues and putting out a highly usable device. And since finishing my setup and writing some robocopy scripts I've not had a single issue. --rt ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm using 0.9 now, but most of that was done with 0.8.3. AFAICT, the SlimServer has always picked up on the tags just fine. I may need to revise this statement. I did some quick spot checking. It looks as though a pattern may exist. I'll dig a bit more to confirm before posting a bug report, but here's what it's starting to look like: Using Foobar2000 v0.8.3: RG tags applied by FB to FLAC files seem to be picked up. RG tags applied by FB to MP3+ID3v2.3.0 files seem to be picked up. RG tags applied by FB to MP3+ID3v2.4.0 files seem NOT to be picked up. I'll check further over the weekend. In the meantime, maybe some of you would like to check this out. Could help zero in on a pesky bug. --rt ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Mark Lanctot wrote: Don't think it really matters anyway - 0.9 is the new version. 0.8.3 isn't available for download, not through the regular website anyway. Yeah, I've been running v0.9 for about a week now. And it looks like some of the MP3+ID3v2.4.0 files that I'd tagged since upgrading FB aren't showing their RG tags is SS. I'm only able to check the web interface right now, but if this proves to be true then it points to an issue in the SS scan and/or store pieces. --rt ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Re: What's a good backup utility?
bernt wrote: On Windows XP use robocopy and Schedule. robocopy D:\path C:\path /MIR works for me. Better yet, schedule this: robocopy D:\srcpath E:\destpath /E /B This will copy over any new or modified files to your backup but _not_ delete any files/dirs that are in the destpath but not in the srcpath. This practice protects against a lost/deleted source being automatically synchronized over to your backup. And run this only when you are sure of the state of the source files: robocopy D:\srcpath E:\destpath /MIR This will delete files/dirs which have been removed from the source, freeing up space on your backup device. --rt ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
