My Squeezebox Classic display finally died today. Any ideas where to get
this replacement VFD in the USA?

Re: [slim] Latest Plex updates Music features

The more I use the Plex interface on iOS and tvOS, the more I like it
for music playback.

As soon as there is a audio-focused playback device (near Transporter
quality), I'll have to seriously consider ditching LMS/Squeezeboxes. My
family cares nothing about local library playback, preferring Siri/Alexa
for on-demand music playback.

I'm not following. You use Apple TV, AVRs as LMS, or Plex clients?

If I could find a decent audio client for Plex, I'd consider moving away

Yes, I realize voice control is still (overall) in infancy, and I very
much respect the fellow that is working on Alexa integration with LMS.
LMS is still pretty stable for me, but when my existing hardware starts
dying (I'm thinking more of Radios, vs. Classics), it's tough for me to
replace.

I consider two levels of users at my house:
1) Audio quality as #1 priority (I'm this user) - so Transporter and app
control is critical. Apple Music integration would be a "very nice to
have".
2) Family users - Apple Music/Amazon Music/voice control is high
priority, Bluetooth and/or AirPlay streaming (yes, I realize LMS has a
plugin, but it never worked well for me), as well as "standalone"
hardware that doesn't require an app to use, i.e. a Squeezebox Radio.

^^^ Over the past few years, it is obvious to me that LMS can really
only offer beta-type support for user group #2 above, and the hardware
options are limited. Plex seems more robust, and in active development.
If I could switch over to Plex full-time for user #1, I could satisfy
group #2 by getting Echo devices or try the Apple HomePod.

This is way to alpha/beta for me to rely on at the present time. Most of
the voice control features would be used by my wife/kids, so stability
for this functionality is the highest priority.

Anyone else tried this?

As much as I love LMS, it's just getting a bit old/inflexible for me.
I'd prefer to move to a Plex-based system for music, but I have two
Transporters, Touches, etc. that I don't really want to scrap. And I'm
not aware of any client that Plex supports that is even remotely close
to the sound quality of a Transporter.

Yes, I had looked at the NUC, and other similar mini-computers - but

 piCorePlayer Linux distro for Squeezebox.

I have just built a complete Squeezebox Player from a Raspberry Pi
based on this for £60 ($90) including case, SD card, wi-fi dongle, power
supply and audio cables. One major advantage of this setup is that
piCorePlayer is pre-configured to get audio out of a Raspberry Pi - and
nothing else. This means that it took about 10 minutes to build and 10
minutes to set up. An absolute doddle. If I want to make it hi-fi
there are now supported I2S DACs and digital out cards (to supply an
external DAC) that can be attached for another $50 or so. You can also
go down the slightly more fiddly route of a USB DAC but support for that
is rather more hit and miss.

Once you have it running, it is quite possible to adopt the if it ain't
broke don't fix it maxim and just leave it to play the music. I find
that if I don't fiddle with stuff that I rarely need to troubleshoot.

Remember a NUC does not come with memory, storage or an operating
system. I am assuming you are not au-faix with setting up your own
Linux installations and will therefore need to buy a copy of Windows.
That, of course, will need a sizeable hard drive for the OS
(piCorePlayer fits on a single 1GB SD card!). I reckon, with Windows,
you will not get much change from $400. Of course the resulting
computer will be capable of very much more than piCorePlayer on a RPi.
You could use it as an LMS server and/or the hub of a complete media
center if you wanted, so it really does depend on what you need it for.

With the other options made available at the moment, a NUC is complete
over-kill for a simple player. If, like me, you just need a couple more
headless players like the Receiver then the RPi running piCorePlayer
 is just the job.

All very good points! I was thinking I could get into a NUC (incl
memory, small SSD, Linux etc.) for under $250. But, as you stated, it
borders on overkill.

I am still very much interested in a Hifiberry + SPDIF card + proper
case + piCorePlayer, however I am in the US, so I couldn't find any
easy/cheap way to get all three shipped to me.

Very true. Right now I'm running my LMS on a 2011 Mac Mini, which is
very robust for the purpose :-) In the past, I've used a NAS and a
Squeezeplug to run LMS, and the instability drove me nuts. The NUC

In the case of the RPi, I think the limiting factor is the case. There
are so many potential configurations that, unless a case is provided by
the maker of the add-in board you are left with DIY solutions.

Personally I will be going for one of these for my next project which is
a DAC with a bespoke case available for it:
 https://www.tindie.com/search/?q=IQaudIO.com

UK based but priced in dollars, so they clearly know about shipping
abroad. However, analogue RCA output only.

You can get the RPi in the USA from here:
 http://www.newark.com/raspberry-pi/raspbrry-modb-512m/model-b-assembled-board-only/dp/43W5302

They also sell an all in one Wolfson sound card for the RPi with
analogue RCA, SPDIF, line in, line out and shared microphone /
 headphone:
 http://www.newark.com/element14/wolfson-audio-card/audio-card-for-use-with-raspberry/dp/07X2281

If there is not a case yet, there probably will be soon. Otherwise you
may need to make up a DIY solution. Now there's a challenge!

 Good luck.

Thanks for all the great info. Per a message earlier in the thread, the
Wolfson is not supported by the piCorePlayer? What software player
would you use instead?

I think ideally, I'd want piCorePlayer running on a Pi + Hifiberry Digi
+ case. If someplace sold all of that hardware (or equivalent), I'd be
ecstatic!

I am still having a hard time piece together the pieces to this puzzle.
Please keep in mind, I've been a member here for 7+ years, and visit
several times a week to try and keep up with the evolving situation.

I am simply trying to understand the status of the DIY hardware that
this thread originated upon. I understand it has to run some software
(as a player, I don't care about the server part). *So now, there is no
simple player software (that would run under this DIY hardware) under
development?*

How does Ickstream fit into all this? For the simple noobs like myself
that hope to buy a little box, put some software on it, and use it as a
player to compliment their existing Squeezeboxes, is there hope for us?

Great! I really appreciate the links. The SOtM looks interesting...

I've been using the VAMP built on a Ponoplug for a couple months now and

So, I wasn't missing something obvious? What are they trying to do that
the VAMP solution does not accomodate?

The M2Tech HiFace 2 is probably the next best step up from this before
getting into the more esoteric interfaces.

It's a real shame that the Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 uses the HiFace
 (1) chipset for USB audio input, which is no good for Linux, as this
would be pretty much perfect otherwise as it also offers LVDS I2S output
which is really hard to find on other interfaces.

I appreciate the info on the M2Tech HiFace 2. This side of computer
audio is relatively new to me. A side I'm being forced to learn about
since my turnkey Squeezebox solutions are obviously drying up. I really
like my Transporter, and was even considering buying a spare. But
something like the VAMP + SOtM dX-USB-HD could probably do just as good,
for much less.

Love reading about this project!

I'm all for cheap, but has there been any consideration given to
maximize digital audio output from a device like this? Better PSU, or

would be interested if it's possible to replicate the high quality

look at individual music folders and they all look like the appropriate

I have an external HDD with a backup of all the music files taken

Window7, there is no way (that I know of) to see folder size without

OK, I didn't try the windirstat program, it may be unnecessary. When I
got home today, I checked the available storage on my NAS. It showed
correct, i.e. the proper amount of space that I would expect.

I had a previous Windows explorer view pulled that showed the amount of
space available, it showed I had 325GB free. I hit refresh, and it now
shows I have 451GB (correct) free! Over the course of 20 hours, 126GB
magically freed up.

I ran bliss for a bit again, and happened to be in a folder it was
scanning through. I could see a TMP file that was jumping all around
in size, from 200KB to 90,000KB. I didn't watch it for long, but if it
was adding 90,000KB to each track it re-wrote, I can see how the temp
space used up could grow at an extraordinary rate.

more normal than the 2:1 you seem to be getting. Even if you had
supersized album art with low quality MP3 it's hard to imagine how you
 get to 2:1.

Yes, I know. That is why bliss was blowing my mind! I kept seeing my
available space drop a Gig at a time, and started getting worried as I
was about to use up all available storage on my NAS. I finally had to
stop bliss when I had 50GB of 1093GB remaining.

The cover art is typically only 40KB, and 99.9% of my music is FLAC. I
don't think I can figure the math on it, but if I have 22,000 tracks,
and they each get 40KB (embedded)worth of cover art, I still should
only have added about a couple of Gigs at most.

As mentioned earlier, most art was 300x300 or 600x600. I realize that
resolution does not correspond to file size of the JPG, but I could
count on one hand the number of times I put a large file (900x900) to
an album. Still, having bliss grab ~1100 albums worth of covers used
~250GB worth of additional space. I could get more exact numbers if
that helps, but I'm not too far off.

Did you try doing it on a small subset of files, letting bliss run to
completion (including cleaning up any tmp files) and then comparing the
filesizes before and after? Even if that were the explanation, that
would be awfully inefficient disk usage while processing the files.

I didn't try that yesterday, but I will attempt tonight. I was scary
watching the files grow! I'm talking 2-3GB every 5-10 minutes.

Re: [slim] Tool to search for cover art in my library?

2010-11-08 Thread SamS

OK, this is really strange.

I checked my NAS storage today (had stopped bliss at 1100 of 1900
albums scanned last night) and saw that that I know had 400GB back free
from storage!

I know this cannot be my imagination, or some simple error, as both my
NAS interface, and my Music fold mapped as a network drive both
reported capacity increasing 300-400GB due to the bliss process.

Any ideas why this might have happened?

I'm going to run bliss again to see if the problem re-occurs.

OK. I'm trying your Unlimited version now. I put in on my Window7 x64
desktop. It is taking a long time to run. Putting it on a Sheevaplug
would not be a good idea!

Why do I sometimes get un-compliant errors when only one of the tracks
is missing the art?

This would be for an album that initially had no art. I'm guessing
bliss finds the art, but for some reason it doesn't 'take' to one song
of 12 or so?

FYI: I think it might be tough to run bliss on a desktop when your music
is stored on a NAS.

My work-around is to map my NAS to a network drive (i.e. M:/) and point
bliss to M: so it can scan/modify.

Another tip if you are considering adding album artwork where you have
none (or minimal) previously:

Embedding artwork takes a ton of storage space. I am rarely using
bigger than 600x600, and my ~1900 CDs look like they're going to take
200GB+ of storage space. That seems ridiculous to me! I might even
run out of room on my NAS discs at this pace.

I need to start basically from scratch to add covers to my music
collection. I just never did it from the beginning, and now I have
about 2000 albums that need cover art.

I run SqueezeboxServer on a Sheevaplug which is Unix-based. However,
I'd prefer to interact with a program like bliss via my Windows7
desktop. Which version of bliss do I need?

My music is stored on my NAS. Would bliss be installed on my remote PC
and interface with my SqueezeServer via IP?

I fear the Sheevaplug does not have the CPU power to run SqueezeServer
and bliss simultaneously.

Re: [slim] Gapless playback with FLAC

2010-04-19 Thread SamS

Clive, thank you so much! I had done a bit more investigating last
night, and read about the 4608 samples of silence appended to tracks,
so this has happened to others before.

My drive model is Samsung SH-S183L. However, I no longer have this
problem. Any rip I've done since about mid-2008 does not have this
problem. I did a bit of digging by file date to find when this problem
stopped. I don't know what would have happened at that time, except
possibly an upgrade of EAC.

Now, the big question, how do I fix this?
