Re: [slim] Latest Plex updates Music features
The more I use the Plex interface on iOS and tvOS, the more I like it for music playback. As soon as there is a audio-focused playback device (near Transporter quality), I'll have to seriously consider ditching LMS/Squeezeboxes. My family cares nothing about local library playback, preferring Siri/Alexa for on-demand music playback. LMS is still pretty stable for me, but when my existing hardware starts dying (I'm thinking more of Radios, vs. Classics), it's tough for me to replace. I consider two levels of users at my house: 1) Audio quality as #1 priority (I'm this user) - so Transporter and app control is critical. Apple Music integration would be a "very nice to have". 2) Family users - Apple Music/Amazon Music/voice control is high priority, Bluetooth and/or AirPlay streaming (yes, I realize LMS has a plugin, but it never worked well for me), as well as "standalone" hardware that doesn't require an app to use, i.e. a Squeezebox Radio. ^^^ Over the past few years, it is obvious to me that LMS can really only offer beta-type support for user group #2 above, and the hardware options are limited. Plex seems more robust, and in active development. If I could switch over to Plex full-time for user #1, I could satisfy group #2 by getting Echo devices or try the Apple HomePod. Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?
TheLastMan wrote: Yes, I had looked at the NUC, and other similar mini-computers - but dismissed them mainly thanks to Steen and his brilliant (and free!) piCorePlayer Linux distro for Squeezebox. I have just built a complete Squeezebox Player from a Raspberry Pi based on this for £60 ($90) including case, SD card, wi-fi dongle, power supply and audio cables. One major advantage of this setup is that piCorePlayer is pre-configured to get audio out of a Raspberry Pi - and nothing else. This means that it took about 10 minutes to build and 10 minutes to set up. An absolute doddle. If I want to make it hi-fi there are now supported I2S DACs and digital out cards (to supply an external DAC) that can be attached for another $50 or so. You can also go down the slightly more fiddly route of a USB DAC but support for that is rather more hit and miss. Once you have it running, it is quite possible to adopt the if it ain't broke don't fix it maxim and just leave it to play the music. I find that if I don't fiddle with stuff that I rarely need to troubleshoot. Remember a NUC does not come with memory, storage or an operating system. I am assuming you are not au-faix with setting up your own Linux installations and will therefore need to buy a copy of Windows. That, of course, will need a sizeable hard drive for the OS (piCorePlayer fits on a single 1GB SD card!). I reckon, with Windows, you will not get much change from $400. Of course the resulting computer will be capable of very much more than piCorePlayer on a RPi. You could use it as an LMS server and/or the hub of a complete media center if you wanted, so it really does depend on what you need it for. With the other options made available at the moment, a NUC is complete over-kill for a simple player. If, like me, you just need a couple more headless players like the Receiver then the RPi running piCorePlayer is just the job. All very good points! I was thinking I could get into a NUC (incl memory, small SSD, Linux etc.) for under $250. But, as you stated, it borders on overkill. I am still very much interested in a Hifiberry + SPDIF card + proper case + piCorePlayer, however I am in the US, so I couldn't find any easy/cheap way to get all three shipped to me. There are so many potential configurations that, unless a case is provided by the maker of the add-in board you are left with DIY solutions. Personally I will be going for one of these for my next project which is a DAC with a bespoke case available for it: https://www.tindie.com/search/?q=IQaudIO.com UK based but priced in dollars, so they clearly know about shipping abroad. However, analogue RCA output only. You can get the RPi in the USA from here: http://www.newark.com/raspberry-pi/raspbrry-modb-512m/model-b-assembled-board-only/dp/43W5302 They also sell an all in one Wolfson sound card for the RPi with analogue RCA, SPDIF, line in, line out and shared microphone / headphone: http://www.newark.com/element14/wolfson-audio-card/audio-card-for-use-with-raspberry/dp/07X2281 If there is not a case yet, there probably will be soon. Re: [slim] Tool to search for cover art in my library?
OK, I didn't try the windirstat program, it may be unnecessary. When I got home today, I checked the available storage on my NAS. It showed correct, i.e. the proper amount of space that I would expect. I had a previous Windows explorer view pulled that showed the amount of space available, it showed I had 325GB free. I hit refresh, and it now shows I have 451GB (correct) free! Over the course of 20 hours, 126GB magically freed up. I ran bliss for a bit again, and happened to be in a folder it was scanning through. I could see a TMP file that was jumping all around in size, from 200KB to 90,000KB. I didn't watch it for long, but if it was adding 90,000KB to each track it re-wrote, I can see how the temp space used up could grow at an extraordinary rate. -- SamS SamS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9261 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

aubuti;588017 Wrote: What kind of art files do you have that are more than half the size of the audio data?!? For my library (and I suspect a lot of others) the average is something like 25-40MB for a FLAC track and 10-20_KB_ for album art. I generally use a single cover.jpg per album anyway, but even if you're embedding the art I think a audio:art disk size ratio of 1000:1 is a lot more normal than the 2:1 you seem to be getting. Even if you had supersized album art with low quality MP3 it's hard to imagine how you get to 2:1. Yes, I know. That is why bliss was blowing my mind! I kept seeing my available space drop a Gig at a time, and started getting worried as I was about to use up all available storage on my NAS. I finally had to stop bliss when I had 50GB of 1093GB remaining. The cover art is typically only 40KB, and 99.9% of my music is FLAC. I don't think I can figure the math on it, but if I have 22,000 tracks, and they each get 40KB (embedded)worth of cover art, I still should only have added about a couple of Gigs at most. As mentioned earlier, most art was 300x300 or 600x600. I realize that resolution does not correspond to file size of the JPG, but I could count on one hand the number of times I put a large file (900x900) to an album. Still, having bliss grab ~1100 albums worth of covers used ~250GB worth of additional space. I could get more exact numbers if that helps, but I'm not too far off. -- SamS SamS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9261 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
