Awesome. I am trying to install LMS on the same unit as I type this. But
I may not need it, since I have it running on my laptop all the time.

I bought 25 feet of CAT 6 cable today to run it to where I have the
plug. With wi-fi I may be able to skip that.

Went to Wal-Mart today to get the USB Logitech speakers, but they only
carry the regular analog kind in the stores. Will have to have them ship
the speakers to the store.

Thanks again for the great work!

Squeezelite (the player VAMP is based on) will not access any hardware

hardware volume from linux, but this will require you to find a way of
controlling it which would be outside of what squeezelite does.

Thanks!
I will experiment and see what I come up with.
I almost completed the VAMP last night. I only need to do the Alsamixer
step, but I don't have the Dragonfly DAC with me a the moment. LMS
doesn't see the VAMP player yet. I guess this step is needed for the
unit to be visible. I will complete the process tonight.

Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30

2013-01-18 Thread crooner

I will attempt building a VAMP today. I want to use with my Audioquest
Dragonfly USB DAC. I am hoping it will work fine. This DAC has a volume
control in the analog domain that is usually controlled by the Windows
operating system. It acts exactly like the regular system volume.

With my netbook, I use Griffin's PowerMate as a physical volume control
knob.

For Linux, the PowerMate works with the Gizmo Deamon.

My question is: would the Gizmo Daemon work with the VAMP?

I'd love to be able to adjust the volume on the DAC within the VAMP.

Thanks!

[slim] The Squeezebox finally made it to Fry's

2007-10-17 Thread crooner

Saw the Logitech branded SB3 at my local Fry's today. Price was still
$299, despite being assembled totally in China. The box was pretty
slick, and visually appealing.

It was sitting right next to the Roku Soundbridge and the Roku radio.

My prediction was a cheaper SB for the retail outlets. It seems
Logitech is confident they will sell at $299.

With the word of mouth recommendations its been getting for the past
couple of years, they'll probably sell a bunch 'em!

Re: [slim] Any New Squeezebox coming soon?

2007-04-29 Thread crooner

Yeap, to paraphrase Bernstein-Sondheim's West Side Story, something's
coming...

I'm thinking about several possiblities here:

1- A scaled down Logitech branded Squeezebox, produced totally in
China, to be sold at retail outlets.

2 - An enhanced SB with a Sonos like interface. Perhaps a color screen
incorporated to the remote. No actual sonic enhancements here, just an
updated user interface.

3 - A scaled down Transporter. This would actually be a SB4, or
successor to the present product.

4 - A SB based boombox.

I think 1 and 2 are most likely, followed by 4. Option 3 is very
unlikely, since a trickled down TP would cost close to $1000 and this
doesn't quite fit with Logitech's marketing ideas.

And yes, the Transporter was announced months before it became
available.

Looks like another clueless reviewer.

Even the much lauded Stereophile review is nonsense, IMO. I was reading

[slim] Re: Squeezebox sudden problem help!!!!

2006-05-25 Thread crooner

The SB3 is still unresponsive. It failed to reset to factory settings
after numerous attempts. I will let it rest for 24 hours and try back
tomorrow night. By then, hopefully, I should have an answer from tech
support.

The strange thing about all this is how sudden and unexpected the
death was. The SB3 had worked flawlessly since January. No glitches,
bugs, crashes, nothing! Many times, after reading about the woes of
other users, I said to myself: I am lucky or perhaps I managed to set
this thing perfectly right the first time around...

But I guess all good things come to an end...It was great while it
lasted. Hopefully, I will get a replacement or something (fingers
crossed!)

[slim] Re: Squeezebox sudden problem help!!!!

2006-05-25 Thread crooner

Update:
I got a response from Tech support today. They suggested resetting the
Xilink which I already did. They also suggested pressing the left arrow
for five seconds to bring up the setup networking screen. Negative...

I guess I'll have to return the unit for warranty service.

Now, I am wondering about this failure...

The Squeezebox uses regular computer grade chips just like your average
PC or peripheral. Nothing exotic, If I am not mistaken. Therefore, in
stands to reason that reliability should be excellent.

This is the first time in all my computer years that I have a
catastrophic failure on a device. I've never had a total HD failure for
instance.. And I've been using PCs since 1989, almost 20 years!

Never experienced static electricity damage on a component, motherboard
or CPU. Not even a burned out flyback on the old CRT monitors.

I guess my excellent track record has been shattered.

Well, I was basically talking about computer equipment for home use.
Perhaps I had a problem or two with office machines back when I used to
work as system administrator. Still, reliability was not bad at all.

I remember my first HD was a clunker ST seagate (full height) with 33
MB capacity. I then upgraded to the 3.5 inch version with 44 MB around
1990 or so.

I burned a Cyrix 586 chip once, but it was completely my fault. I
tried to attach a fan to it, and accidentally shorted the tiny pins!

[slim] Squeezebox sudden problem help!!!!

2006-05-24 Thread crooner

Hi Fellas,
I have a SB3 which has been working perfectly since January. No
glitches whatsoever until today.

I usually keep it powered off (disconnected from the supply) when not
in use.

I powered it up today as usual and it couldn't find SlimServer. Turned
out the computer where SlimServer is installed was in stand-by mode. I
have it set so it will wake up automatically when the SB is turned on.
However, something strange happened and it didn't come out of sleep
mode.

The last screen I saw on the SB3 was press the right key to retry.
After that the screen went blank.

After waking up the computer, I checked SlimServer's web interface. It
recognized the player. However, the display was still blank.

After rebooting the PC, SlimServer displayed player not found.

The SB3 screen was blank and it was not recognized. However, it was
warm to the touch...

I tried pressing the add and brightness buttons on the remote in an
effort to bring it back to life. It was in vain...

I hope it's not a hardware problem.

I have already sent an email to tech support, but I am yet to hear from
them..

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Thanks for your reply. I tried that too after checking older threads in
the archives. No dice.

I kept the key pressed before and after plugging in the connector.

I also experimented with the power and 1 buttons...

The fact that it stays warm to the touch means there's some activity in
there. Perhaps the internal regulators...

If you recently changed the name of your music folder or changed drive

I've only noticed it when I added a second hard drive to my system. The
drive designations changed. When I updated my music library location on
slimserver to reflect this, it turns out the old library entries were
still showing up, hence the doubling of files.

Rescanning everything should take care of your problem...

Incredibly expensive for what you get. You can assemble a comparable
Squeezebox based system for much less and it will be more customizable
and upgradeable in the future. The internal hard drive is also going to
be noisy, despite their claims of it sitting on a 8x bearing whatever
that is :-)

[slim] Re: Problem: Can't connect to wireless network

2006-02-21 Thread crooner

You are welcome Dave,
You may want to reset the router (using a ballpoint pen probably) and
see if it starts working again. Static electricity sometimes causes
wierd things with digital equipment.

The little WiFi signal detector looks like a USB flash drive, perhaps
slightly larger. I know Fry's has it. Probably CompUSA as well.

The SB3 appears not to see a signal at all. You think the rounter may

[slim] Re: Problem: Can't connect to wireless network

2006-02-19 Thread crooner

Forgot to mention, does the SB3 see the actual wireless signal but can't
connect, or it doesn't see anything at all. This is very important.

You have to make sure the wireless signal is being broadcast. You may
want to use a field survey tool of some sort to detect your WI-FI
signal. A laptop would be ideal but there are small USB gadgets that
can do this for you.

If there's no WI-FI signal your router may be shot. It might still
function as a ethernet hub though...

[slim] Re: 48KHz playback?

2006-02-19 Thread crooner

I've experimenting with higher sampling rates encoding a few DADs
(classic records 96/24 recordings) into FLAC files.

My laptop was able to play the 96 kHz 24 and 16 bit FLAC files.

However, the SB3 would play them at slow speed.

The higher I can go is 48 kHz and 16 bits resolution. 24 bits would
cause the files to cut off. Presumably because of bandwidth problems. I
am using a wireless connection.

pkcrawford: are you using 24 bits and 48 kHz by any chance?
