[slim] Can't delete player from LMS account

2020-07-18 Thread jmpage2

Hi all,

I have stopped using my SBs and have started selling them. I was not
aware they were still registered to my LMS account. I have a device that
went to someone else and I can see the device is powered up and
registered and there is no option for me to delete it. Clicking the
"disconnect" button doesn't do anything the delete button is always
grayed out. Using remote control I tried to power it off but it still
doesn't let me delete it even when powered off.

Is there any other way to get this SB radio deleted? Would deleting my
entire account remove it?

The person who purchased the item never contacted me about the radio
still being registered but left some very unflattering feedback on the
auction site about the unit still being registered to my account.

Thanks,

Jason

LOL, no kidding.

Without reading the thread, what's the current summary as far as an
eventual LMS replacement? Has anyone been in touch with some of the
music services such as Pandora to see if it might be possible for access
to continue in a post logitech world for those services?

[slim] Getting a Squeeze device separated from a mysqueeze account?

2013-08-13 Thread jmpage2

So, I bought a Squeezebox Boom used on eBay. It's in good shape and
working well but I can't connect it for internet music services to mysb
account as the device is already associated with the old users account.

I IM'd him on eBay but have not heard back from him. Is there any other
way to dis-associate the device from his account so I can use it fully?

Okay I think I finally figured it out, this is related to changing the

How irritating.

But, fortunately it can be fixed.

You may also find using plugins for this will help immensely. SBS gets
grumpy with very large playlists, and the method of grab a dozen or so
tracks, keep adding to the end and dropping off the start as we play
 works a lot better.

Using Erland's plugins, you can make dynamic playlists that are
comprised of parts of your collection, like All tracks tagged
'Classical' or 'Everything except tracks tagged Explicit or Christmas',
 etc.

Then you get the pleasure of hearing tracks you didn't think of playing
(the appeal behind random) without the long load times of an actual list
 of all your tracks.

(And, of course, as you add music, it will automatically add it to the
playlists that it qualifies for... not to mention you get playlists
like Not recently played and such when you're wanting something new
 but don't know what.)

I've tried Erland's plugin and unfortunately it does not work for my
configuration.

I have several playlists I rely on heavily that are created by setting
the star ratings in iTunes (via my iPhone, on my Mac, etc). I then
copy the iTunesLibrary.XML file into my Windows Home Server and have
SBServer use it for the source of my playlists. I manually have to
update the xml file periodically since I have found no good or reliable
way to keep star ratings or any other aspect of the SBS library
synchronized with iTunes that resides on another computer.

In any event, I haven't had any real trouble with my large playlists
getting into trouble until I observed this 500 song issue.

Thanks for the information.

[slim] Bizarre random play bug with large playlist

2010-10-30 Thread jmpage2

I've observed a rather bizarre bug in SB Server (latest available
version) and I'm wondering if anyone else has observed it.

I have a decent sized music library of about 10,000 tracks. I use the
iTunes integration to play my iTunes generated music playlists, the
most typical one I use consisting of around 2,000 tracks.

What I've observed is that whenever I randomly play this playlist, all
of the selections for the first several hundred tracks selected
randomly have artists with names starting with the characters A-D,
then the next several hundred tracks randomly selected have artists
starting with characters E-J, etc.

So, basically it's not really random at all.

Can anyone else test and verify and is there anything that can be done
to clear this bug, it's rather annoying?

I believe Logitech would get more advantages of supporting third party

that we have some very creative solutions made by third party developers
today is that they aren't restricted by the Logitech management and
strategy in the same way as all in-house development are. Third party
developers can create solutions that are a bit outside the box, while
all in-house development has to follow the main strategy.

It depends. If the net benefit of rebranding iPeng as the Logitech
Remote App for Squeezebox, advertising it and giving it away on the
Apple store generates an extra 5000 unit sales per year it would be far
better than hoping that 3rd party development generates these types of
additional sales.

I have actually been surprised myself that Logitech hasn't simply made
an offer to buy the iPeng product line, rebadge them as Logitech branded

they make money on.

What would be the harm in them offering him $250K for his sweet sweet

Certainly seems like a win win to me, although admittedly as soon as
the marketing geniuses at Logitech get involved they will muck up the

On 2nd thought it would be a very BAD idea for Logitech to acquire this

it typically takes very good hearing and songs where potential artifacts
are likely. These are not the typical case for most listening. If you
really want to learn more about this sort of thing go over to
hydrogenaudio.org and read the material on this issue and the many forum
posts. But I'm getting the idea that you're not actually interested in
learning anything that changes your initial beliefs and you're happy to
accept the heuristics and biases that may color your beliefs. That's
ok--to each their own. We're just listening to music, not curing cancer.
And as I said, I personally prefer all my music in FLAC (lossless) if at
possible (even streams if they were available)but not because I
think I can hear any difference (in my library of over 100,000 songs
I've heard less than a dozen songs that were not transparent at 128).

Please get off the pedestal. I know all about hydrogen audio and have
been using the LAME encoder and the Fraunhofer encoder before that.
I've been encoding my music for over twelve years and have participated
in numerous ABX tests that demonstrate that I usually can pick the
higher quality sample.

It also might interest you to know that while I don't purport to be an
audiophile, I used to sell extremely high end stereo gear. Listening to
some top of the line Martin Logan speakers powered by Krell amps and
high end DACs will go a ways towards getting you comfortable with what
is possible in audio and you can set your expectations from that.

garym;487335 Wrote:
There's plenty of discussion of this on the web by very informed folks
(in this forum and other places), so I don't want to turn this thread
into a repeat of all that info. You may have amazing hearing, but there
is lots of scientific evidence that clearly indicates that it is fairly
rare for any individual to be able to ABX in a blind test the difference
between a properly encoded 128 mp3 with the original CD. If you were
posting over at Hydrogenaudio.org the folks would demand that you post
your blind ABX test results to back up your statement about detecting
differences (one of their terms of service). Of course, we're not over
there and things are much looser here.

I can't speak to streams from pandora as there are so many more
variables in the mix other than just the actual source file (and not
sure how to easily do an ABX test with pandora stream since you don't
have the source file in another format). Keep in mind that even
extremely small differences in volume can make one source sound better
than another (again, lots of hard evidence on this).

Bottom line, Pandora may very well not sound as good as your local
files, but in general, 128 (created with a modern, quality encoder) is
typically transparent for most users on most music. Your statement that
the reverse is true flies in the face of lots of controlled experiments.
I'm not trying to pick a fight by the way, I just hate to see myths
about lossy encoding quality be perpetuated. That said, there are lots
of reason to rip music to FLAC (or other lossless format), and I do so
 with all my own CDs.

I agree with you that for the 'average joe' who thinks that an AM radio
sounds great there is no need to go higher than 128kbps.

However

It doesn't take amazing hearing to be able to tell the difference
between 128 CBR MP3 and VBR MP3 that are both LAME encoded. All it
takes is some musical knowledge and decent equipment.

Most of the listening test I've seen that show that users can't pick
apart 128kbps vs 192kbps mp3 are usually performed using $5 computer
speakers. Color me shocked on those numbers.

You might be mixing things up here and imply that 128 AAC (which is
pretty much superior to LAME at the same bitrate) is good enough for
most users.

All I can tell you is that to me it's pretty evident which I am
listening to, at least with the Pandora service (and who knows how the
music is encoded). They obviously offer the 192 kbps streaming for
their paying customers for some reason, I doubt they would spend the
money on placebo affect.

[slim] Logitech - please work with Pandora for 192kbps streaming!

2009-11-19 Thread jmpage2

I am a paying Pandora One account holder, which means that when I'm
listening to Pandora on my computer I am treated to 192kbps audio that
sounds notably better than 128kbps garbage.

Unfortunately this enhanced audio quality does not work on the
Squeezebox platform.

I contacted Pandora support about this and they said that they have
considered adding 192kbps audio streams to other devices but that it
would also take work on the part of the device maker to support this as
well.

So, if Logitech has any pull with Pandora whatsoever please try to get
us 192kbps audio for the Squeeze products. I have three players and am
considering a fourth but since Pandora is what I use most it's a real
drag to listen to low quality garbage on my mid-fi and hi-fi setups.

In fact I would say that it would be hard for someone NOT to be able to

Re: [slim] A question about cats

2009-11-15 Thread jmpage2

RonM;485639 Wrote:
We built our house ten years ago, and seized the opportunity to install
cabling in the walls (at the time, to support distribution of satellite
tv and also ethernet to computers). We put connect boxes in a whole lot
of places, all terminated at a patch panel -- still bristling with
multiple cable ends. Am not sure of the cabling CAT type, not sure if 5e
was out and about at the time.

However, the cabling works well and is supporting HD satellite at 1080i
(as high as it gets). The ethernet supports several computers in
several locations, including links to the dedicated Fit2 music server,
as well as the router. Unfortunately, we did not put enough connect
boxes, and have been unable to use it for the SB system itself -- had to
drill a hole in the floor to get ethernet to the router for our main
system, use wireless for the alternate (where there is one cable
connection, but not ehternet). So I fully agree with the advice to
 install LOTS of connect boxes.

Overkill at initial construction is the obvious strategy. When we
upgraded to HD satellite recently, it was clear that the existing
siamese cabling (two cables in one piece) was sufficient to support the
signal, but limits us to two receivers in the house -- need a separate
cable for each receiver if you are to tune the TVs separately). Would
have been best to install a total of four cables from the dish location
to the patch panel, giving options for additional TVs/receivers in the
house -- the switch to split the incoming sat signal is at the dish, and
our supplier will only install it at the dish not inside the house,
 perhaps there are technical issues.

The other thing we did when building was install good speaker wire in
the walls, from the obvious location for the main stereo system, to the
obvious main listening area. This was a great idea, but too limited. I
wish we'd installed more locations allowing connectons through some sort
of patch panel to multiple listening areas, and probably multiple
options for location of the SBs/amps, etc. Of course, SB type systems
were not yet a factor in our consciousness.

 Ron

The big expense is the labor. If you are doing such a major
construction project and the general contractor is amenable the smartest
move would be to run your own wire everywhere, and put some of the 3/4
inch smurf tubes for future use as well. Terminate it all to a patch
panel in the basement, crawl space, etc.

A friend of mine paid $3300 to have his entire house wired while it was
being built. They would not let him do it because he wasn't a licensed
contractor. So, he ended up with about $500 of wires installed at a
cost of $2800.

At the end of the day though he's still better off for it. He has
cat5e and speakers pre-wired to pretty much every part of the home.

I politely disagree. Powerline adapters are very expensive and have
limited utility since they max out at about 1/5 to 1/10 of what is
possible with traditional cat5e or cat6 cables.

100MB dedicated duplex connections are just barely fast enough to
stream high quality 1080P. Most power adapters cannot pull this off.

For the $100-$200 per cable run that power adapters cost you can
usually find an electrician who can run the wire, even if you have to
terminate the connections yourself.

I will have to put it back on dhcp and get a sniff of what is going on

a get out if they decide you had unauthorized wiring in the walls
after a fire (even if it wasn't a contributing factor). I'm perfectly
confident I can do it safely, and would of course use the in-wall rated
 stuff.

The problem is it varies by locality. Generally speaking you don't
need to get a permit to do low voltage work such as alarms, doorbells,
network and audio/video.

You just need to make sure that the cables are rated class-2 or class-3
for in wall use, or plenum rated cable for use in heating ducts or drop
ceilings as Pat indicated.

Re: [slim] A question about cats

CAT6 is definitely more future proof. You can run 1 GB over both CAT5e
and CAT6 but it's likely that CAT6 will eventually be able to handle
even higher speeds.

I also agree that if you can run some of the small diameter smurf
tube conduits since it will make it easier in the future to backhaul
fiber, etc, through the same spaces.

Also, make sure whatever you run is rated class-2 or class-3 for in
wall use. Some cheap cables are not rated for in wall use and
technically can spread a fire or toxic fumes if there is a fire.

Re: [slim] Troubleshooting Squeezebox V1?

2009-11-11 Thread jmpage2

Well, my SB V2 ran for 48 hours with no issues when hooked up to all the
same wired connections as the V1.

So, I took apart the V1. I notice that one pin on the wireless pcmcia
card slot is broken so I removed the wi-fi card.

I booted it up and immediately noticed it is acting weird. During
setup it would keep resetting itself, right at the point where I was
typing in the server IP, etc.

Finally got through server setup and it's working, but I have low
confidence in this device now.

In all likelihood it is shot and only usable for parts for another V1
unit, so I will start investigating trying to pick up a used V3.

[slim] Troubleshooting Squeezebox V1?

2009-11-09 Thread jmpage2

I notice that there are no longer any forums dedicated to older
Squeezebox hardware. I'm still hoping I can get some troubleshooting
help for my circa 2003 Squeezebox V1.

My Squeezebox V1 (FW40) started having issues about a week ago. Every
night, at the same time, it will show that it has disconnected from the
Squeezebox Server (7.4.1). A ping test shows that it in fact has lost
network connectivity.

I initially thought this was a DHCP issue with the IP address not being
renewed. The last time the issue happened I rebooted my router which
should have flushed the DHCP bindings so that apparently is not the
problem.

I've also replaced the network cable to the device and changed out the
network switch port. None of the other devices on the network switch
are having any issues.

I have also done a reset on the Squeezebox hardware by holding down the
add button on the remote while powering it up.

The only unusual thing I can remember from the time when the problem
began is that this device seems my Squeezebox Server as having the name
Gizmo while all of my other Slim Device hardware sees the server name
as gizmo. Not sure it really matters.

Does anyone know of any way to do any further hardware debugging on the
unit before giving up for good?

Thanks.

Lease expiry doesn't typically cause these types of issues (in my
experience most client devices aren't polite enough to stop using an IP

player with a static IP to rule out anything like that.

Other than that the fact that it always happens at the same time points
strongly to an external cause - as the player doesn't know what time it
is :) I'd look at things like machine restarts, power fluctuations, any
kind of environmental change. Even temperature change?

I've just swapped the V1 for a V2 that I have. Same network cable,
power supply, etc. We'll see if this one starts acting flakey also.

Since it is losing the network it is possible that some weird thing is
going on, so if it continues to happen then I might put a laptop sniffer
with a hub on it and stop the sniff after the problem begins.

I would be suspicious of some goofy arp behavior or maybe it thinks it
can't see the server (even though all the other Squeezeboxes do!).

[slim] WHS - Can't use share names in Squeeze Center setup?

2008-08-09 Thread jmpage2

Hi guys. I'm in the process of setting up Squeezecenter on my Windows
Home Server that I've put together last week. One thing I'm scratching
my head about is that it seems as though I can't specify netbios path
names for my various shares, etc, in the Squeeze Center setup.

For example, I want my music path to be \\Homeserver\Shares\Music but
when I try to save this Squeeze Center balks and says;

Invalid value \\Homeserver\shares\Music for audiodir

I can point Squeeze Center at the real root path directory
D:\shares\music\ but in Windows Home Server it is strongly advised to
not use the D:\ path for anything as it's a virtual file system.

Does anyone have any advice to help me get this set up and working
properly?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] iTunes playlists empty...

2007-10-06 Thread jmpage2

I am having the same problem. I have never attempted to use iTunes in
slimserver before but as I rely on iTunes heavily now for playlist
management I decided to give it a whirl.

Upgraded Slimserver on my Linux machine to the latest RPM (6.5.4) and
set it up to use iTunes.

iTunes database and all of my music files are synch'd nightly from a
Windows Vista machine running latest iTunes version to the Linux box...
so the iTunes database file and associated music are located on the
Linux box itself.

Checked the radio button for use iTunes and pointed Slimserver to my
iTunes database and the music folder that all of the music resides on.

All of the albums/artists/etc are showing up, and the playlists for
iTunes show up, but when they are selected they are showing up as
empty.

I've tried a rescan, etc, any ideas to resolve this are welcome. I did
notice that one playlist I have with the name ' *' (meaning 4
and 5 star songs) shows up in Slim as '' but I doubt that's
breaking the whole thing.

Is there any debugging I can do to see what's going on with populating
these playlists?

[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-15 Thread jmpage2

I think we are all missing something that the OP stated in one of his
posts a short time ago.

He indicated that he has a PC in his bedroom near the squeezebox but
that he has it hibernate at night.

I'm guessing that this same PC is the device that runs slimserver.

You've programmed your Squeezebox to connect to both your PC and to the
Squeeze network and then at night you hibernate your PC shutting down
the connection between the Squeezebox and the Slimserver software that
runs on your PC.

So then the Squeezebox is connected to Squeezenetwork and if that
connection is lost then it will report to you that it lost the
connection.

Solutions? Take your PC out of hibernate mode so that your Squeezebox
can stay connected to it.

Don't like that? Then as someone else indicated, either set the
brightness to off when the box is off or put it on an electrical
timer so that it's completely powered down during your normal sleepy
times.

I hardly think slinging insults, throwing tantrums and threatening
lawsuits is the best way to remedy situations like this. Your single
paragraph rant was pretty funny though, in a this guy should be in a
straight jacket kind of way.

[slim] Re: Help configuring Squeezbox with Vonage

2006-12-29 Thread jmpage2

OK, so this is a wired version of the Squeezebox you are using? And
it's connected to the same router as the laptop (which is also using a
wired connection)?

These are important questions to answer. If you are using DHCP on both
routers then it is likely that they are on different IP subnets, which
means that the Squeezebox wouldn't be getting an address from the VoIP
router at all but should only be able to attempt to get a device from
the locally connected router.

Can you access the configuration web pages on both the VoIP router and
your regular router and provide the DHCP configuration information
here? That should answer the question of whether it is possible that
both devices are attemping to handle DHCP for your entire network.

As far as configuring the Squeezebox statically, it's not difficult.
You simply need to give it an IP address on the same IP subnet as the
laptop. If you go into a DOS window on your laptop (type cmd at the
command line) and type in ipconfig you will see the ip address of your
laptop.

For example, the laptop might have the address 192.168.0.3 which means
that the laptop is probably on the 192.168.0.x subnet with the router
being 192.168.0.1, you could assign the squeezebox any unused ip
address in 192.168.0.x, for example, you could use 192.168.0.100 (which
should be well outside the address range being handed out by DHCP) and
set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, then just set the router address
to 192.168.0.1.

The problem likely has little to do with the Vonage adapter, unless in
fact it is handing out a DHCP address to the Squeezebox.

Traffic between your Laptop and Squeezebox won't pass through the
Vonage adapter at all, it's far more likely that you have a firewall
set up on either your router or your laptop which is interfering with
the communication between the Squeezebox and the Laptop. Information
about what ports need to be opened on the firewall for Squeezebox and
Slimserver to communicate is well documented in the support section of
the Slim Devices website.

When you say things are not working, what is not working? Does the
Squeezebox completely boot up, get an IP address, AND SAY that it is
connected to the Slimserver (running on your laptop)? If you are not
getting this far then you need to investigate what is happening when
the Squeezebox attempts to get an IP address and contact the Slim
Server.

If you aren't sure where your Squeezebox is getting its IP address from
then you need to get into the web interface of each of your routers and
see how DHCP is set up on them. You can also check the status to see
which of them has handed out an IP address to the Squeezebox. The
router will either identify the Squeezebox with an understandable name,
or it will provide the MAC address (machine address) of the Squeezebox.
The Squeezebox will either have the MAC address printed on a sticker on
the bottom of the device, or you can confirm the MAC by disconnecting
the device and seeing which MAC address disappears from the router's
DHCP table.

Please provide as much information as possible about the problem so we
can help you resolve the issue.

We need a big sale on SB3 before the new ones that are branded

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-19 Thread jmpage2

Wow, less than 12 hours after the announcement and people are already
predicting doom and gloom that they don't have bragging rights or
niche status with their Squeezeboxes any longer.

Folks, I thought it was about the music. Logitech can probably help
Slim reduce costs on the more mainstream products like Squeezebox while
still allowing a high end Transporter product to succeed in the market.

I see a simple windows installer for the noobs and a high end server
product for custom installs or those users who want to do their own
compiles, add their own plugins, etc.

This is all good for us, the consumers, as likely one big benefit of
the acquisition is that prices will go down. Don't condemn this deal
until it bears sweet or bitter fruit.

And for those exceptionally bitter people, buy as many Sbs and
Transporters as you ever think you will need and get the latest server
software, it does virtually everything you would ever want to do for
music listening in the current state it's in.

Hats off to the Slim Devices team, congrats on this deal, I'm sure it's
good to get handsomly rewarded after years of hard work!!

2006-06-01 Thread jmpage2

The problem is that even though you can do a discrete on/off sequence
for the Squeezebox, 90% of components don't have them (like my TV, DVD
player, Cable Box, etc).

So unfortunately I think most users will resort to leaving everything
off or on and having a macro just to power their stuff up or down.

I've read that the remote does a poor job of tracking which components

get.

Somewhat off topic but there is a coupon deal with Dell right now on

bothersome, when I'm fatigued, but it never actually goes away.

Because its what my ENT said. I have about a 6dB dip in the left ear
at that frequency and have pronounced tinnitus. Most people have to
have 20-30dB of signal loss before tinnitus develops.

My test results were strange enough that they had me go back and do a
BSER (brain stem evoked response) test to make sure my brain was
working properly.

So based on all of that, yes, I believe I am more susceptible to
tinnitus symptoms than most people.

Yes, I've had similar thoughts about how they could get better adoption

I still think they need to offer a stripped down wireless model for
less than the $299 price point.

Nearly everyone I've shown the SB to has become completely deflated

Look at it this way, for $300 you can buy a video iPod and a little

2006-05-10 Thread jmpage2

I more or less agree with the conclusion your friend came up with in his
blog article, that Pandora might work too well in the sense that it
puts more emphasis on trying to match songs based on their component
parts rather than looking at the meme of who is listening to what
(someone who loves the Arctic Monkeys will probably be able to stand
Franz Ferdinand, etc).

I think Last.FM does a better job of the latter, plus it's great that
scrobblers exist for virtually every player (iPod, etc) out there which
really helps it make valid recommendations based on what you already
listen to from your own collection.

High-frequency hearing is the first to go. A cheap (free!) test is:
can you hear the HF whine of a CRT TV? I think that's about 16-18 kHz
and it's quite quiet. If you can hear it from several feet you've
probably still got fairly good hearing.

Interestingly enough my hearing loss is not severe, but I am very
susceptible to tinnitus.

When they tested my hearing it was quite good other than a dip in the
left ear around 7khz.

Unfortunately since I am apparently pre-disposed to tinnitus it means
that over time as natural age related hearing loss occurs the tinnitus
will probably only get much worse.

There are a few individuals out there who sell their own customized

The Roku is a direct knockoff of the Squeezebox that costs a bit more

So effectively that leaves the SB sort of in the middle, hard to

In order to fly off the shelves the Squeezebox needs to be on the
shelves to begin with. There are are hardly any retailers selling it
right now. I live in NYC and wanted to pick one up at a bricks and
mortar store and couldn't find one. (Tekserve only had the Squeezebox
2). Internet sales are great, but for a consumer product you really
need to find a way to get in stores.

Squeezebox is a great product - I love mine, but it's really not
marketed to consumers at all. I can't imagine growth is exponential
because there's no awareness of the product in the marketplace (which
is why you all have such trouble explaining the product to your
friends). Ask 100 people at random on the street what a squeezebox is
and you'll get 100 blank stares. Ask 100 people what an iPod is and 30
will take one out of there pocket to show it off, 65 will offer an
explanation, and 5 will adjust their hearing aids and ask you to repeat
 your question.

One of the reasons that iPods sell so well is that they've been
brilliantly and exhaustively marketed. If/when Apple ever gets serious
about competing with the squeezebox with something other than Front Row
they'll probably outsell Slim's lifetime numbers within a week or so
(assuming they build a halfway decent product). That's not a knock on
the people at Slim, just a testament to the power of advertising.

Well, to add to this train of thought, Squeeze has done a great job of
being a niche product, but to bust out to the mainstream the price will
have to come down. Wi-fi appliances like the SB3 don't cost $300, they
cost $150, $200 at most. I've showed my SB2 off to several friends who
were very interested in the device until they found out what the cost
was. You'd really think with direct sales they could sell for less and
still make a good profit (while possibly increasing their volume).

Then again, maybe that's not the goal, maybe they would like to sell
more to the Niche crowd.

OK, this is all twilight-zone esque.

After posting the above I upgraded (again) to 6.2.2 because the build I
am on apparently was not the latest (release) version.

And now I'm having the *SAME* problem that the muffin man is having.

My Squeezebox 2 says the normal press and hold brightness bit and
when I do the display simply blinks off and the box reboots itself and
comes back to the same update firmware screen after accessing the LAN.

I never see the progress bar indicating that the SB is upgrading
itself.

I was on Linux build 6.2.2-6245 and just re-upgraded to the final
release after realizing I hadn't upgraded successfully. Slimserver is
starting up just fine and now shows that it is 7135 but the SB won't
upgrade.

Tailing the log file shows

[EMAIL PROTECTED] slimserver]# ./slimserver.pl --logfile
/var/log/slim.out --d_firmware
[1] 3039
[EMAIL PROTECTED] slimserver]# service slimserver status
slimserver.pl (pid

[EMAIL PROTECTED] slimserver]# tail -f /var/log/slim.out
2006-04-28 17:12:07.7405 squeezebox2 v. 33 requires upgrade to 48

And that's it.

No matter how many times I try to upgrade this is all I see from the
logfile output.

7135 is tagged at 6_2_2_FC1, and Dan has reported that the official

The fix for ordering went in at 7128, and inserts albums.titlesort as

 you get disc-tracknum-track title

This should be the same regardless of the skin used, though I would
have to admit that inconsistencies do remain in the skins (to what
extent I am not sure). All work to make skins more consistent has
been part of the 6.5 process.

I was not on the right build, I ran the upgrade and walked away and
thought it had completed, but it turns out that the 6.2.2 final was

Can someone help with this? I've tried rebuilding the database and it
doesn't seem to have any effect. I would expect that if random is not

album order (can you tell I find the current behavior extremely

I did clear and re-scan the library and it's still going on.

If anyone has any other ideas that would help please let me know. As
it is I'd say the bug is not fixed for everyone.

Nope, shuffle is definitely turned off, I've even toggled it on and off
from the web interface.

The song order is not coming up shuffled, when I am selecting play
all it is coming up with track 1 from each album by the artist, then
track 2, track 3, so that all the albums are interleaved with each
other.

It's rather obnoxious actually. The only thing that will get it to
stop doing this is to select shuffle by album which then sorts them
into the correct order but plays the individual albums by an artist in
random order.

[slim] Play all songs bug in 6.2.1?

2006-04-11 Thread jmpage2

I'm running Slimserver 6.2.1 and am seeing something bizarre that I
don't remember occurring before.

If I select an artist and then choose to play all songs the song order
is playing the 1st track from each album, then the 2nd, etc.

I don't remember this behavior occurring in the past, when I would play
all the tracks for an artist they would be sorted in album order.

Is there some setting that I am missing, is this how the feature is
supposed to work or is this a bug?

Thanks.

Thousands of people run the Squeezebox without such issues, it is
certainly a wireless issue, possibly some incompatibility with your

A message to the people who go on and on about how their wireless

Your laptop is not streaming audio over the network and does not need
to be continued to it continuously like the Squeezebox needs to be
continually connected to the Slimserver, AND, for everyone who has a
laptop that works perfectly someone else has a laptop/access-point
combination that fails miserably to live up to expectations.

Yes, there is a plugin that works, jscrob2 is loaded as a visualizer
in iTunes and then configured with your last.fm login and password
info.

It then takes the recently played list from your iPod when synched
and loads the newly listened to tracks directly to last.fm.

I haven't had a problem with it and it's nice to have my iPod listening

2006-02-17 Thread jmpage2

I have to say that after trying both I really like last.fm better. One
thing that irritates me about Pandora is that it won't let you skip
beyond a certain number of tracks an hour, which is extremely
irritating if you are just listening to new stuff to get a feel for it.

Last.fm sets up a very cool user page for you which shows all sorts of
statistics and lets you custom tag all the music you've listened to.

If you become a subscriber with Last.fm (which I have) then you get
your own personal radio as well as the ability to play your loved
tracks whenever you want, also very cool.

Sound quality for last.fm seems slightly better to me too, I wonder if
they are using a better codec.

All in all my enthusiasm for pandora has faded after trying last.fm. I
am very impressed with it.

edit

One thing I forgot to mention is that there are even scrobbler plugins
for iPod, Rio Karma and other music players for last.fm. This is
really cool as when I synch my iPod it uploads a list of all tracks
I've listened to so that last.fm can add it to my user profile.

The Squeezebox to me is in a limbo state - it has mass market
pretensions from its industrial design, it isn't a standard HiFi

rather than the overkill electronics favoured by audiophiles. Yet it
requires an element of devotion by technically minded people to get it
running well. It isn't plug and play, but it looks like it should be.
You still need to know what you are doing for a successful install,
 especially on wireless.

Yes - I know that many people have installed SlimServer, plugged in the
Squeezebox and got music, but many haven't and in any case there are lot
of people out there who love music but run away at the thought of
entering a network IP address. What if I break my home network? What
if I do something wrong and plug it into the wrong slot on the router

 Paul

Couldn't agree more. The vast majority of Slimserver downloads are for
Windows and we all know how easy it is to get a service like this to run
smoothly on windows (firewalls, virus scanners, background processes
anyone?).

Some of this is beyond Slim Devices control but certainly there ARE
things that can be done with the application and installation
instructions to make it easy for non-techies to get things going.

As far as people being morons I find that many tech folk
automatically slot people into that category who don't live and breathe
tech as they do.

I sure know a lot of PHD and MD morons if tech savvy is really the

It's of course improbable to make the Squeezebox and Slimserver idiot

far too confusing.

There's a very common misconception that the only way to be successful

I think it's more of an assumption than anything that Sean Co. have

A $30 DVD/CD player will satisfy most people at home.

Most people I know have hundreds (if not thousands) of CDs and at least

Expensive? you are joking right?...for what it does it's a stone
cold bargain.

Rob

stone cold bargain is something of a relative term. The SB3
effectively does nothing more than what a Roku you can pick up for $149
does.

The primary things that justify the increased price of the Slim box are
the updated display and the audiophile quality electronics. For some
folks the native FLAC support seals the deal.

Remember, cost is relative. For something like the SB to really take off
for the masses it would have to be a heckuva lot less than $300. For not
much more than $300 you can get an actual PC running Linux.

The point is that the Slim box fits into the general computing
category. How many network appliances fetch $300 (answer, not too
many). Whether it is expensive or a bargain is obviously in the
eye of the individual consumer. Personally I think that the Squeezebox
is starting to creep out of the audiophile/tweaker closet and get closer
to being something that the masses will embrace (although it will
require much dumbing down of software and installation for that to
happen).

When that DOES happen more and more people will put the Squeezebox up
against products that cost 1/2 the price for the same basic
functionality (Roku, airport express, etc)... and it really won't
matter to them if the SB has a better DAC or extra outputs or a
slightly better display.

Personally I think that Slim should go the Roku route. Offer a very
budget conscious $149 Squeezebos lite that offers basic capabilities
at a fantastic pricepoint. Then price a souped up version with a
bigger display, higher quality DAC, etc, for $100 more. A deluxe
version could even do full multimedia have an HDMI output, etc.

I think that Sean and company have done quite well catering to the
geeks, tweakers and audio nuts, but at some point to keep selling
equipment they will have to cater to joe 6 pack.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Could a wireless enabled iPod overtake the Squeezebox as a
network music player?

- Yes - I want my wireless iPod yesterday!
- No - nothing will pry my Squeezebox from my cold, dead, hands!
- Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely...

I think that we are only going to see more and more integration of the
iPod with home and car audio. There are now lots of people who have
purchased hundreds (if not thousands) of Apple DRM tracks from the
iTunes music store, so what else are they going to play them with?

I think the iPod will continue to evolve into the jack of all trades
master of none role while products like the Squeezebox continue to
evolve as audio specialist appliances that offer much better sound
quality and more flexibility.

I guess what I'm really getting at is that there is plenty of room in
the market for both products.

the U.S. and that native Pandora support gives Slim a leg up on the
competition rather than being another me too who adds a plugin for
something like last.FM?

Slim is getting a lot of competition from Roku in the retail channel
and this is really an excellent way to have something out there that
differentiates them from the competition.

And I hardly see where you get the DATA that indicates that this is
going to consume all Slim Devices efforts over a 6 month period of
time.

Newbie questions? If you want to sell more players to more people than
there are going to be more newbies, in the business world that's
referred to as having a successful product.

Personally I'm rather puzzled with why (for some people) Slim needs to
remain this niche player that only the cool kids know about.

[slim] Re: NY times/ Pandora

2006-02-09 Thread jmpage2

I've been trying out Pandora for the last several hours.

Wow.

It's very, *very*impressive.

About my only beef is that the bitrate is not as good as I would like
(192kbps+ would really help the audio quality).

I hope that the Slim Devices implementation for Squeezebox is as smooth
as the web interface for Pandora (easily add songs to a channel, thumbs
up, thumbs down, etc).

I agree with Sean Adams, this is going to be huge, it's like XM on
steroids.

You know, after playing with it for a bit I've come to the conclusion
that Pandora is a great idea, but... half the artists I type in - it

and more better known artists but the indie artists, abstract,
experimental, and a plethora of genres not heard of get left out of the
 mix.

I can't parse too much blame, however; it's not like they can tap into
*EVERY* kind of music out there...

Keep in mind that to build the Pandora Database they had to build up
lots of information about what people have been listening to over the
past 6 years.

Certainly private label or indie records are going to have a much
harder time being represented when much of the music isn't even
available via normal distribution channels.

The good news is that if the project picks up more steam I could really
see it branching out into more genres of music.

As it is I've had it selecting all sorts of things for me that I've
never even heard of, and most of it wouldn't be classified as pop.

[slim] Re: I want a Squeezebox boombox

Question: Who wants a Squeezebox Boombox?

- I'm interested.
- No, thanks.

I would much rather see something like a full audio/video media solution
from Slim (with high-def HDMI output) long before they worry about
building a boombox.

I got a chance to play with a Roku HD-1000, and while it's got some
bugs, the capabilities were impressive as hell.

Dean,

Thanks, that did fix it. Is this considered a bug? Seems inconveniant
to have to re-scan the library every time I add album art to my tags for
iTunes iPod goodness.
