What about plain Ubuntu server (or Ubuntu desktop with the gui). Ubuntu seems to have pretty wide hardware support so I guess it is most likely to work on your old laptop. Don't know crashplan but Ubuntu is quite popular so if it has something for Linux it will most likely work on Ubuntu? Re: [slim] Yet another thread on replacing squeezebox devices
PasTim wrote: A use case. Some of this is expressed in terms of the solution, for instance I have no better way to describe an ideal controller than to say 'just like LMS'. I don't want to throw away amplifiers or servers that I have that do an excellent job as it is. Some of the components are, therefore, part of my ideal system. I want: 1) To use a browser on a wireless laptop or tablet to play music in my lounge, and sometimes in one other room. 2) The user interface needs to be as flexible as LMS is now, which means I can customise menus to play things like 'Works By Composer' and select a performance by a particular Artist, or 'Random Works', or 'Random Movements', or 'Albums by Conductor', and so on I have no need for anything better than that which LMS provides, so I want to keep it as it is. 3) This user interface includes the ability to select a 'player' which in this case would be the streaming software (i.e. just like squeezelite, especially in its 'local player' guise). 4) The music is in flacs, up to 24/192 quality, on a linux server. 5) My amplifiers are connected to my wired home network. 6) I want to select the input to the amplifier to be the music source and stream (i.e. the streamer on the server), no more than that, and nothing need be displayed on it for each track. It's just an input, like a tuner, LP player (yes, I still have more than one!) or whatever. 7) I have no need for additional hardware boxes, indeed I have a positive aversion to them. There is no need for them. They perform no useful function that I can detect. 8) I have no need for multi-room sync. 9) The KISS principle applies (Keep It Simple, Stupid). I just want to play music as simply and reliably as possible. Thus removing the Touch from my current set-up should make the solution better. So, since both amplifiers already support streamed music over the wired network using UpnP, I want to use something like squeezelite to stream directly to them, rather than to an audio device on my server. You kind of painted yourself into a corner here. You have complicated requirements, particularly point 2. I see 3/4 options: 1) If you let 2 go I would suggest something like plex server on linux. I think it has DLNA features but it doesn't have the complicated browse menus. I have it but don't use DLNA or the music features so not sure how well it works. You possibly need to let go 4 as well. This also means you won't be using LMS. https://plex.tv/(that's 3 requirements down). 2) Use LMS and somehow get it converted to the way you want. Hit's all your points but not 9. I think it will be tricky to set up and difficult to work with. 3) LMS has some upnp functionality. But I have no idea how it works. I think it acts more as a client playing other sources than anything else. Check under settings/advanced/network. It also acts as a server so you should be able to play stuff from your amp already. But it doesn't show up as a player AFAIK. 4) Set up one little box (which you have already in the form of an SB). Get one of the boards for which images exist on this forum. Write that image and you are set to go. Hit's all your points except 7. And most of these are so small you can hide them anyway. Is the reason no such solution seems to exist is that there are technical downsides of which I am unaware? Or does someone out there know of an existing solution? Using UPnP like you suggest you lose a lot of features. Including sync, etc. Lot of upnp players are also fairly difficult with different formats etc. I would suggest the best solutions is probably getting a WandBoard and install the Community Squeese OS on it (if you can download it). Or install some form of linux and squeezelite on it. That way you get something as close as possible to a touch less a screen. If you have a TV nearby you could probably add a now playing screen / browser / etc. You can then pass digital to the DAC of your choice from the wandboard. I have not tried this myself. I am actually waiting for a wandboard package to be delivered. I chose it for other things but as it seemed that lots of people are using it to replace squeezeboxes I thought that it would be good device for this reason also once my SBs die. Another way too answer your question: I store embedded and folder.jpg for all music (mainly flac and mp3). I tend to try to find the highest resolution artwork I can (typically in the 800x800 to 1500x1500 range unless it's obscure). It doesn't cause me any performance issues AFAIK. What is your server? If it's is very slow/underpowered then you might have issues. I'm running this on an HP microserver, but used to also run it on an aged XP box. It was also OK on that. Are you looking at using the Touch in standalone mode? If you are then you need to consider what to do as the touch is apparently slow with art. Also in practice people test encoders etc. I can see how it can be misused by the other crowd. I wasn't trying to say that lossy encoding is no good. Re: [slim] Human Time-Frequency Acuity Beats the Fourier Uncertainty Principle
As far as I can tell it goes along the lines of: As far as I can tell there is some proven theory that says linear systems can't discern frequency and timing beyond a certain limit. These guys have proven that the human ear can do this. The conclusion is therefore that the human ear is not a linear system. The implication is that processes / systems / audio compression / etc. that assumes that the ear is linear may miss some information and may need to be rethinked. I don't believe that this has anything to do with CD sampling and lossless audio, but may be wrong. [slim] Android App Developers - Your mission if you chose to accept it
Hi guys Thanks for all the brilliant work. I do have an idea for a feature that I miss on your apps. I'd buy the Android app that does the following: (unless I've already bought it) I want to be able to sync a subset of my library to my android device. Sub-set could be: - artists - albums - playlists - dynamic playlists (i see this as a way to randomize what's on my device, perhaps based on a not recently played field etc.). The app should - talk to the LMS server - have an option to limit syncing to when connected via wifi and/or charging only. - have a leave this much freespace on my phone option - handle disconnects from server etc gracefully and just continue syncing when next possible. - not be annoying with lots of pop-ups etc. I.e. background based and only appear when it is summoned :) - optionally do transcoding from flac to mp3. I currently achieve this with a app that syncs smb fodlers. I set up a virtual folder with symplinks to the files I want to sync to my device. This is cumbersome. We should be able to integrate directly with LMS. This message will self destruct in 5 seconds... Looks like still nothing has changed on the Android syncing side since then, there simply is no good Android sync software. I believe you should have support on the server side for the sync process, too (keeping track of the state) but it might not be needed. I think there are syncing solutions but nothing that integrates with LMS, trackstat etc. I was thinkin along these lines: The app just needs an ordered (by priority) list of artists, playlists, albums, dynamic playlists you want to sync. Higher priority stuff gets added until the space is filled. Albums/Songs in each item can be prioritised by frequency played, recentcy etc. For each of these items in the list: T 1. Thee app then needs to ask the server for the relevant songs. 2. It needs to remove songs that no longer appear there. 3. Add songs on the server that it doesn't have . If the app can run queries against the LMS db I don't see that it really requires much server side code. It would be better because then different devices can have diferent sync profiles. Example: 1) Artist: Coldplay 2) Artist: U2 3) Album: OK Computer 4) Playlist: My Best Square Dancing songs 5) Dynamic: 100 most played songs order by descending playcount 6) Dynamic: Unlimted songs not recently played order by last played This will add songs going down the list to the device. Once the device free space becomes limited it stops. If it's not full by 5 it will add the most played songs limiting to a 100. For 6 it will continue adding till free space is limited. lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98095 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] replacing squeezebox with android
Android connected to a USB dac. That sounds clever. Then you get higher quality (or even digital out) quality to amp/DAC of choice. The option I was planning to upgrade to for the car is to put a bluetooth receiver in the car (which has lineout) and then I don't have to wire up the phone. This should be possible in the home also. Though not sure if the bluetooth sends data loslessly but the quality difference in a car shouldn't be noticable. lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97918 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Browsing large folders via 'Music folder' is slow
The LMS experience is not optimised for using folders. It physically goes and read the folders as you browse to check if there are new folders. It's always best to use the internal menus as these are read from database relatively quickly. You could run two LMS servers each set to look at the folders of one of the collecitons. You could then switch library. Not sure how you'd get to LMS running on one machine, but it may be possible. Why not tag all your songs with the correct genre's? Then one person can get to their music by browse by genre. The other can go through artist/album. You could maybe use custom scan and custom browse plugins to provide this functionality. Or you could use multi library plugin. lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97403 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How does the synchronisation of players work?
In terms of sync, technically, I don't know much but there is tech to sync times between devices via IP. ntp time servers are an example here. This is how your computer can set it's clock to the time servers via the internet. These work over the open internet where latency is longer than your local lan. Over your local wifi/lan it should be easier to get clocks syncd. I guess once the concept of a common clock the rest is easier. Though I guess the clocks could drift so something needs to continue to keep the clocks in sync. If you are technically minded you can look at the code but I don't know where to start. http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/7.8/trunk/ lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97406 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] So will there be any new products with Digital Outs.....
You can do this pretty much with any small form factor pc. You could slap together a small silent PC with rapsberry pi with digital audio out via USB sound for probably $100. You could run linux and squeezeslave/squeezeplay on it and then you have a squeezebox with all the regular offline music capabilities. No screen, but you could run it to your TV and that should give you a nice big screen. Given the opensource (it is right?) nature of LMS we can make it live on. Combined with SqueezeSlave and similar projects I propose raspberry pis with usb sound cards as the hardware (or anything that can run squeezeslave or squeezeplay). And the rest is all software with remote apps. We'd need to host/branch the software and then also get a forum going for this. This will work for offline listening of course. General advice on these forums are to show the SSIDs. - I have a setup much like yourself (except there is homeplugs between the routers). You have to turn of DHCP on one router even if your DHCP was working as you can only have one router issues IPs. You shouldn't need to have a static IP for this to work. Perhaps you can try without a static IP for the radio? - I don't have a radio though so haven't tested if the squeezebox hardware switches efficiently. Hi I have purchased SqueezeCommander through the Slide.Me market before. But now that paid apps are available in South Africa I'd thought I'd let you know that I don't seem to be able to buy the app through the Android market. Perhaps a setting on your side that needs to change? I was actually trying to buy SqueezePlayer and got the same problem, so just checked SqueezeCommander. I am able to purchase squidget for example so I think it's a setting on your side. If you do figure it out do let bluegaspode know how to fix this for SqueezePlayer also. Depending on what broke on your existing PC a great option for a server is recycling an old PC for use as a server. When I replaced my regular PC a couple of years ago I setup my old PC as a server. If you reset players or similar you need to reactive each player to scrobble. The default is not to scrobble. Re: [slim] Massive problems with SB setup - close to giving up!!
As you point out it seems to be a complex problem. First I'd suggest turning off everything except the touch and making sure that runs. I do not run with an attached HD so I cannot be of much help there. Make sure that this is working fine for you. Does the touch do the same with no other players connected? Then add one player at a time diagnosing problems as they crop up. The boom seems to be most of your problem. And it seems to be a connection problem more than anything else. I'm not sure how many players the touch can support as a server. At the moment you are running three players (2+touch itself). It may also depend on the file type you listen too. -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Any hope of a Twitter Plugin?
Something I'd do once I'd figure how to do applets\plugins\etc: I'd love to see a general social network/pop-up plugin. But I don't want to use it to browse these social networks. I want it to simply do pop-ups as and when things occur. These pop-ups should pop over the current activity which may be the off screenssaver, now playing screen or whatever. I feel that this alert much better fits with the idea of a touch or sb3. It happens to be a convenient screen near where I'm sitting or listening to music which can be used to remind me of interesting things etc. If I want to browse these things I go to a PC with a nice big screen. E.g. I might be listening to music on the touch, and it will pop up with tweets of my friends every now and then, and also facebook news feed items. This should pop up photos etc on the touch but only text items on the old players. The screensaver model doesn't really work here. I only want to see these things when there is something new. It could also pop-up calendar reminders from on line calendars, emails, etc. And also RSS. Each service added to the plugin should have settings which allow one to decide for that service: - when to pop-up (only when player is off, only when player is on etc.) - how long - audible notification (at least on touch) - repeat older ones - minimum time between alerts -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81800 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I assume after this, I can access the mini PC via a webpage using vortexbox? Thanks again I once installed windows form USB. My hard drive died and I had a dead CD drive. You need to write the image to the usb-drive some way. And not just copy the file to it. So download the Vortexbox.iso and then you need something like this to put it on the usb: http://lifehacker.com/5574276/universal-usb-installer-makes-a-persistent-thumb-drive-version-of-any-linux-os Also you want to boot from USB you may need to change a bios setting to tell the pc to try to boot from the USB if available. You can deactive this after instalation. Then, you just need to do the initial install with KB and screen. After that you can access the VortexBox SBS front end via the web and you can also probably access the comand line on the PC from another PC (I think?). http://vortexbox.org/documentation/ http://vortexbox.org/documentation/vortexbox-quick-install-guide/ -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81683 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It will not continue to play the same song that was playing pre-sync. It works flawlessly with my library music but not with last fm. Stu I think this works slightly differently. Before you sync your player was talking directly with last.fm. To make sync possible the pc takes over talking to last.fm and then sends out the synced streams to each player, otherwise it would be too difficult to sync the streams. I assume in the process of taking over it can't pause and needs to jump a track? -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81468 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can I make my PC a SB device
Porschefan;572576 Wrote: Here's my latest discovery: when I press the + button on the radio it brings up a huge amount of information about the track playing. One of items it says is that the file being played is WMA lossless. On the bitrate line it says it's VBR (variable bit rate--I looked it up ;-)), @ 900-1000 kbps, but converted to FLAC @ 705 kbps. I found this quote: What are the major disadvantages of VBR encoded MP3 files? - Some older MP3 players cannot play them. - Must be re-encoded in order to be streamed. Although variable speed compressed files are difficult to stream continuously over most Internet connections, those that download the entire file before viewing are unaffected. So if one is going to stream music, I guess it's a good idea to convert everything to FLAC as you suggested. WMA I think may be converted to flac by the server and sent to the device to play. flac is also a VBR format but I understand that the number shown is basically useless as it is just an approximation. It isn't using MP3 VBR. -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81377 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
