I assume NAM means North America? Thanks, but unfortunately, I‘m living
in Europe. Is there a forum for region-based "adoption offers" for old
Squeezeboxes? It has been well taken care of (VFDs disabled when not
actually playing to prevent burn-in), and I agree it would be a shame to
just throw it out.

Re: [slim] Is it time to abandon my Squeezebox Classics?

2019-04-22 Thread pputzer

I'm also thinking of abandoning my aging SB3 (late Logitech era, all
black). While the SB3 itself works fine (though the reported WIFI
strength is very low), the IR emitter seems to be fried - no output
generated by IR blaster (checked with a phone that reliably can see the
IR diodes firing). Of course it might only be a problem in the analog
audio path to the headphone jack (probably the usual capacitor death
syndrome). Unfortunately, my soldering skills are severely lacking, so
putting together a pCP is the easier solution.

I have thought of bluetooth speakers as they appear to have the ability
to daisy chain now. I generally just sync all speakers except the
bedroom anyway, but I haven't delved into the range and how well they
sync.

Podcasts and streaming are issues that Squeezebox has struggled with for
my needs. Some podcasts still don't play correctly and interfacing with
various other services is a pain. I do figure someday I will be too old
or tired to deal with it, but hopefully I can keep my l33t set up
running for the a while to come.

philippe_44: I saw your other posts after looking around and it does
look good for getting these SB3s going again. Thanks for that!

BTW, see other threads but in my experience (and I've fixed now 5+ SB3),
the capacitors are the issue in most of the cases for what you describe,
once you've eliminated a WiFi board problem

We seem to be of the same mind here. I can't comment on the sound
quality, save to say that my 20 year old powered Acoustic Research
bookshelf speakers make enough noise for my needs. Having ripped all my
CDs to MP3 and stored them on an extrenal SSD connected to an old
netbook running Win/Xp, I use the sychronisation feature to fill the
house with the same sounds when we have people in, but I more often than
not simply use it for radio streaming from the BBCiplayer. The remote is
not used much because I use the web interface on my laptop, desktop, or
cellphone to just pick one of my 10 Radio favourites. As I said it's a
perfect interface for my needs, but it's getting harder to keep it
current with available technology without replacing things. Have you
tried to buy speakers recently? Go into Best Buy and the teenage expert
may have never heard of a speaker without Bluetooth! ;-)

My question is simply about effort and cost. Should I be continuing on
with LMS and my SB3s or should I join the masses and go with Itunes and
a new Bluetooth speaker?

I'm unlikley to go with a Pi rig, as I don't want to tinker.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I am now using an Allo Sparky with DAC and reclocker instead of my

But I have the classic yoked to the Sparky, so I can still watch the VU

I have 2 late model SB3s - the all black ones - both have had numerous
power supplies but touch wood the networking and audio have held up on
both so far.
When it’s their time to go I shall probably replace with a Pi but I have
yet to find what I consider to be a sufficiently aesthetically pleasing
case!
I do have various Pi based players and various HATs but I tend to use
them in places where they aren’t visible.
The SB3 is still a very good looking bit of kit not to mention it’s SQ.

sb42,
Keep them. I had audio problems on two of my SB3s, originally bought in
2006, back when Slim Designs sold them direct. I found a forum member,
who had fried his CB, and was looking to get a parts SB 3 , to get a new
Circuit Board.
So I sent him my two "bad" ones on the understanding, if he can fix
them, ie replace the Caps, I get one back.
Well it worked out for both of us, and I am very happy. I also bought a
used one of FleaBay which is working ok too.

While I still run a Classic also. Most of my streamers are now Raspberry
Pi based. Pick your poison, zero or full sized and had a DAC Hat and
install Picoreplayer. Now you are completely up to date with 2019 sound
quality. Myself, I have switched to Roon after 10 plus years of
Squeezebox Server. Roon does a good job of using existing Squeezebox
players (e.g. squeezelite, etc.). I have my Classic directly hooked up
to the cloud since I mainly using it for internet radio streaming.

I continue to be amazed at how much the original Squeezebox architects
got right (Mark). I wish Logitech could have continued to develop the
product along the lines of Roon?

[slim] Is it time to abandon my Squeezebox Classics?

2019-03-03 Thread Sb42

I've got two 15 year old Squeezebox Classics. They do exactly the job
that I need them to do which is to be a bedside Internet clock/radio.

I know that in 2019 there will be lots of people telling me that I could
do it all with a smartphone, but I don't want a phone in my bedroom, nor
do I want to navigate app permissions and external data pushing. The
bottom line as we all know is that the SB3 does exactly what it says on
the tin with no fuss.

However they are showing signs of age and having difficulty with audio
output. I'm about to embark on some 'surgery' to replace their
capacitors, but it ocurred to me that if they don't survive the event I
should consider replacement.

Anyone have any thoughts on why I shouldn't just use a tablet to access
LMS via the web interface and stream to a Bluetooth speaker for my audio
needs?

Is there a way to set a Sleep timer from the LMS web interface

look forward to your views?
