Hi Dave, Thanks for the screenshots. They do help a lot. In the published folder, please try to change the state from Externally visible to Retract. I believe, that should do the trick. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Accounts at ODFAuthors
Hi Dave, can you make some screenshots and send those to me directly? What I suspect, is that you first have to unpublish the file, before you can replace it and that you're not doing that. You will have to click on the file you want to exchange, then on the top right, you have to switch from externally visible to Retract and only after this is done, you can then change the file. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Fwd: Writer 4.2 Guide Chapter 12 for review
Hi Peter, I just checked if you have already an account on ODFAuthors. You had, but you were missing some rights, which I fixed now. If you are currently logged in, please log out and back in. Then you should also have the option to retract a chapter (which means, that other people see, that you have it checked out). This does not prevent them from downloading it themselves, but at least they should realise, that they might be duplicating some work. If there are still some open questions, don't hesitate to come back here and ask. What I could imagine, is that you registered on Nabble with one (or more) different email addresses and have registered there (by mistake) several times. A registration on Nabble, does, as far as I know, not count as a subscription automatically to the mailing list. So maybe check the registrations on Nabble and see, if there are multiple accounts there for you. Hi Milos, the software is mlmmj (or something very similar to that). (It was just an idea of mine). :) Do you happen to know which software runs the list? I've even translated its stringd to Slovak, but forgot its name. It was 4 letters, I think, something like ljnl or so. as said above, it should be something like mlmmj. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] ODFAuthors
Hi John, On Thu, 19 Jan 2012 18:09:19 + John Smith clicks...@yahoo.co.uk wrote: Hi. Again, a little help please. When Alfresco went down, I still had the Writer chapter on my machine which I had posted there. On ODF, I locked the file Writer Guide To be updated to LO3.4 Ch11. I've uploaded my copy of Writer Ch11 into the Feedback LO3.4 folder of the Writer Guide. This leaves two copies of the Ch11 file in the To be updated to LO3.4 folder. One is the locked file, and the other is the 'working copy'. Do I leave these files alone or do I delete them?. How do I deal with the locked file?. In the Actions menu for the locked file, I have the options to Cut, Copy, Delete or Rename. In the Actions menu for the the working copy, I have the same four plus Check in and Cancel check out. In the German team we use a similar system to what you're used to from Alfresco. If you have used the check out and want to upload the new file, you can do this in that way: - Go to the working copy, in the left side of the green menu bar (with View, Edit and Sharing click on Edit. - There you can add some comments about what you did, you can chose either to Keep existing file or replace file with and you can then browse to the corresponding file on your computer. Click on Save. - When this is done, you can then click on the Check in in the actions menu. Then the old file will be replaced with your new file. - To see earlier versions of the same file, you can click on the History link. So, now to your problem: Since you have your file already uploaded into the feedback folder, just cancel your checkout. And I think you should be able to move the original file from the To be updated... folder to the e. g. Old Drafts folder. (I'm not sure if this is correct - look at the email from Jean to see, how she had intended this). If you can't move the document through say Copy Paste, just send a note and I will do it for you. But I do think, adopting a similar workflow like I've described above, would be a good idea. But this is a decision that the English team has to take. Apparently most linux users prefer PostgreSQL or MySQL/MariaDB (or Drizzle on the Cloud) so it seems we should point people to those rather than Base. I don't understand your reasoning? Why wouldn't you want to write documentation for Base? You still need documentation, if you want to use Base as a frontend to connect to one of those databases that you mentioned. So, in my opinion, there is some need for user docs. We should definitely tell people, that the built-in database is not really secure, but that they can choose any other database they like. [libreoffice-documentation] Getting started guide - chapter 1
Hi, while translating, I found the following note in this chapter: Under Microsoft Windows you can use either the LibreOffice Open and Save As dialogs or the ones provided by Microsoft Windows. See “Using the Open and Save As dialogs” on page 18. You can find this note on page 17. But my comment is, that even under Linux, I can choose if I want to use the LibreOffice dialogs or the Linux dialogs. There's not much of a difference between the two OSes. And I suspect, that you can choose also for BSDs and MacOS. So maybe this note should be removed? Or at leas reworded. [libreoffice-documentation] [VI] Consistent theme for screenshots
Hi, Bernhard Dippold has sent this message to the design list and asked to forward the message to other relavant lists as well. Please send answers only to the design list. Sigrid --- Begin forwarded message --- Hi all, Marc mentioned a certain UI theme for screenshots in the documentation team [1], there is another thread on [hidden email] about the best UI theme for their documentation [2], Italo wants screenshots that serve our Windows users [3] and the wiki recommends screenshots for the website with a different theme [4]. In my eyes it is quite important to find a solution that fits all our needs in documentation (and its localizations), marketing material, website, press kit and any other place we need screenshots. Consistency is a relevant part of Visual Identity and therefore I'd like to ask you all provide your thoughts on 1) how such a UI theme should look like 2) what other conditions should be met 3) which existing UI theme would serve best as standard for screenshots Do you think these 3 questions could lead to a consensus on a theme to be used? Should we add more points? I'd like to see this discussion to take place here on the list - and send invitation mails to the teams involved in such a decision (documentation [Sigrid told be she would take this part], website, marketing, accessibility, projects, de-discuss) to join this discussion. Hi Karl-Heinz, all, 2011/2/1 Karl-Heinz Gödderz libreoff...@gukk-online.de: Hi Alexander, @all, first thank you for you kind answer instead of cutting my word as David did. I think you got my intention to give a connection between those two systems . (comments see below) Alexander Thurgood schrieb: So only newbies on LibO would use alfresco and the others want to stay with ODFAuthors. I do not consider myself a newbie with regard to the documentation project, yet I will be using, or at least experimenting, with Alfresco and its workflow for any French or English documentation I might produce. As an example, I am currently working offline on the Getting Started with Base translation into French. I do not feel forced into using Alfresco at all, the simple fact of the matter for me was that I found OOoAuthors and the workflow far too confusing for it to be of any use to me. However, that is my personal choice, and I'm certainly not going to impose it on anyone else. I'm also not a newbie and also got an account on both systems. Therefore I perceived that problem. I have seen no pressure from anyone here to use Alfresco, I don't feel under pressure to do so, I will try it because I want to. If it doesn't suit my needs, I can just go back to doing it by myself and making my documents available through other channels. I read some mails stating that all ODFAuthor documents should be integrated into alfresco as soon as possible. And some answers given to the French NL-team seemed me the same problem. I think, what would help is a mechanism like we have on ODFAuthors. If a chapter is published (in other words, final) then you don't even need an account on the website. You can just go there and download it. If such a setting would be possible in Alfresco as well, then we don't need to copy the files into the wiki and from there to ODFAuthors. This would not require any extra work from any person at all. Hi Alex, 2011/1/31 Alexander Thurgood alex.thurg...@gmail.com: Le 31/01/11 16:41, Sigrid Carrera a écrit : Hi Sigrid, Oh, when I said I want to proofread some documentation, I was told, that whatever I correct, has to be proofread again by a native english speaker. So clearly, my contribution there was not welcome. Hmm, I wouldn't consider it like that, perhaps you are taking things too personally. If I write documentation in French, or German (which I can, I just don't do it very often), I would expect a native mother tongue speaker to proofread and correct it as necessary. Obviously, if no one volunteers up to do it, then well that's just tough and the document would go live with all its faults and potentially awkward turns of phrase. Even if I were to draft in English, I would at least expect someone to go over it and check for spelling mistakes, dropped words, brain outages and the like, just for the sake of completeness. I don't find that hard to accept, if the final document reads well for the intended audience. Perhaps. But from the tone of that said email I got the impression, that my work isn't wanted. If I translate something say from German to English, yes I would want someone else to proofread, because I am too much in German grammar mode and I know, that thhis is not how a native English speaker would write that content. But I am quite confident, that when I edit a text, that has been created / edited by a native speaker, I won't change grammar. Ultimately, it would only take one person to have an account there to be the go-between. On the other hand, why doesn't ODFAuthors have something like you are suggesting for those working with Alfresco ? The effort works both ways IMHO. Why should those who want to work with Alfresco have to have an account with ODFAuthors ? They don't. Jean is nice enough to announce when there are chapters done and ready for rebranding. Heck, the last set was uploaded by Jean to Alfresco. Ideally, both systems could either have liaison officers, or some form of automatic notification system. I don't really see why the onus should be on the Alfresco system to do so when ODFAuthors does not (as far as I know, but please correct me if I'm wrong). Or, as I mentioned in my other post, the native language projects could have their own wiki page which would keep people abreast of who is doing what - this would require the documentation authors to submit what they are doing to the LibO wiki page native language coordinator or update it themselves. The French N-L group already have such a page. That's right. A wiki page would be good. But this also means, that the wiki page needs to have the documents in question. Just a list saying I'm working on this document doesn't do it if I have no idea where I can find the original document, that I'm going to translate. Hi Sophie, I have just one question regarding the document you used: 2010/12/26 Sophie Gautier gautier.sop...@gmail.com: Hi all, [...] I've worked on the first chapter of the OOoAuthors guide for beginners. I used WordForge filters [1] to convert the file from .odt (ODF file format) to .xlf (XLIFF file format). Both are standards, so it should be easier to have a good conversion. Several tools manage off line translation for Xliff file format, like WordForge or OmegaT, there may be others I don't know too. Did you use the OOo version or the file, that was already adapted to LibO? The latter can be found in the tdf wiki on this page: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation Chapter 1 is considered to be finished, so it is already offered as pdf as well. ;) I just noticed some paragraphs, that weren't in the LibO version like the explanation that OpenOffice is a trademark owned by someone else and so on So, if we were to use Pootle for translation I think it would be useful to use the already adapted file as our sourcefile. Btw, I also don't see an English folder in the left bar when I go to oooauthors, I only see it, when I add /english to the url manually. That's so strange. Sigrid Hi Sigrid, That really is very strange, because as you said you do have manager rights (and all the other rights), just as you have had for years. I have now checked your permissions and they haven't changed. They were changed. I only had the manager role and nothing else. I changed this and logged off and on again. You could clear your browser's cache and/or try a different browser, but you have probably thought of that already. I did neither, but I did tell my browser to do a true reload. But I will try again later at home. Here are two direct links into the folders where the LibO GS files are stored. Can you see these folders and files from a direct link? http://www.oooauthors.org/english/libreoffice3/getting-started/draft-lo3.3 http://www.oooauthors.org/english/libreoffice3/getting-started/feedback-lo3.3 On my netbook those links work for me and I can see the files in there. The files Ron has worked on are in feedback-lo3.3; the ones he has not done yet are in draft-lo3.3. If all those suggestions don't work... I have no idea what's wrong! You can get the same files directly from the LibO website, but that does not solve the mystery at OOoAuthors. Last thought... you said you can see the Review List. Do you see a bunch of LibO files on the list? What happens if you click on them? Can you get to the LibO folders that way? I thought of going through the review list, but even there, I don't see any LibO related files. This is indeed very strange. I am using the same browser (chromium) on both computers. I will try again once I'm back home. ;) Sigrid -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to documentation+h...@libreoffice.org List archive: http://www.libreoffice.org/lists/documentation/ *** All posts to this list are publicly archived for eternity ***
[libreoffice-documentation] documentation at oooauthors
Hi, I wanted to check a few of the chapters, that Ron ported from OOo to LibO. When I logged in at oooauthors, I couldn't find the folder given in this link: http://www.oooauthors.org/english/libreoffice3/getting-started And when I entered the name manually, I only got the message, that the folder is empty. I also don't see any other subfolder like a feedback folder for this directory. Does anyone have an idea, what I could try? Or were the documents there removed and I have to go to the TDF wiki and grab the documents from there? Re: [libreoffice-documentation] How about creating manuals in mediawiki (and then export to odt and pdf when required)?

Lucky you. I do care about the bandwidth, because I in fact have a really crappy internet connection. My connection breaks down quite often, so I have no internet at all. I have a reasonable connection at work, but there I can't do LibO work at all. So a method, that allows me to work on a document offline would be much appreciated. ;) Also--who creates the included help file within LibO? Is the information separate from from the ODT docs? As far as I know, the help file within LibO/OOo are separate. They are different from the user guides we produce at OOoAuthors. I have never helped with translating those files, but I guess Sophie or André (or someone else) could tell you more about those files. They are part of the source code. [libreoffice-documentation] remark for the readme-file
Hi David, I've checked again the readme-file you've uploaded. I've tried to follow the instructions you put down and I got the following: For Mandriva, you can't use something like: su -c 'urpmi libreoffice3.3-mandriva-menus-3.3-1.noarch.rpm' With this command, the systems looks in the wrong path and gives you then the error message, that the command cannot be found. Instead, you have to do this in two steps: 1) Switch user (su (press return), enter your root-password (press return)) 2) run urpmi (copy the command from the readme: urpmi libreoffice3.3-mandriva-menus-3.3-1.noarch.rpm) This applies to all commands for Mandriva. I agree that this is stupid, but at least, we avoid questions from users who get the above error message. It should have bee sudo... I'll fix this during the weekend... I'm not sure, that sudo will work. Mandriva does not install sudo by default. If you want to have it, you have to install it extra. Hi Narayan, 2010/12/3 Narayan Aras narayana...@hotmail.com Can someone post the link to pdf? I am unable to see it anywhere at this site- http://www.documentfoundation.org/foundation/. The documents that Ron mentioned are still work in progress, they aren't finished yet. So I guess, that there is no pdf-file available at the moment. [libreoffice-documentation] proofread read me file
Hi, I've downloaded and edited the readme file, that David expanded first. I did record my changes, so that anyone, who wants to check my work can do so easily. :) http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/cgi_img_auth.php/1/17/Readme-for-libreoffice-beta3-linux.odt It would be great, if someone, who is not a Linux-geek could try to follow those instructions and give feedback. Hi, I've sent my file directly to David - he should have it by now. :) 2010/11/29 David Nelson comme...@traduction.biz Hi, :-) On Mon, Nov 29, 2010 at 18:47, Jean Hollis Weber jeanwe...@gmail.com wrote: David, you can turn View Changes on at your end, whether or not it Sigrid had it activated. Or are you saying you did that, but can't see her changes even then? Exactly so... I can't see her changes even then... :-( That's weird. I had both things activated. What I did was this: I saved the file under a new name - to not overwrite the file from David. On the wiki, I clicked on Upload a new version of this file and chose my file. Maybe something went wrong here, because the file did not have the same name? At least, that's my guess. Can anyone else comment on this? Should I have kept the old name? Thanks for further comments. I'm working on some additional corrections at this moment. My instructions for installing a language pack do not work... Can anyone put me right about that? I am surprised. Your instructions for installing the languagepack were the same as for installing the software. What might be, is that you have to change the UI setting. I think I mentioned this in my edit of the readme as well. Go to Tools Options Language Settings Languages. You can choose a language for the UI, the default locale setting (affects the decimal separator and the default currency). If I remember correctly, I had to change these settings after installing the german language pack, so for me it wasn't done automatically.
