That has been my experience also. The white background tends to
"yellow" with age, imparting a greenish cast to the blue-green of the
original filter color.

I did find a "frosted" mylar sheet that diffused the light almost as
well as the white, but still had a "hot spot" in the middle.

Using the 755 bulb instead of the original 47 helps considerably in
extending the life of both filter pieces, plus gives the added benefit
of "almost forever" bulb life.

Re: [drakelist] 4 line blue filters

2007-11-07 Thread W4AWM
Hi Carey,

Please don't feel bad, you asked a perfectly reasonable question and found
the answer. There was really no way to enter a question like that into a search
engine until you at least had a manufacturers name or model number. That you
got and that is why we are all here, to help eachother. If you did not happen
to know about the Drake site, you could not be expected to be able to find out
anything, either. The last time I tried to find the Drake site on Google, the
link did not work, so you can see there are problems. In any rate, welcome to
the reflector and to the world of Drake collecting.

My little tirade was about the folks who know what they want and in many
cases have the above information. Then they get onto the reflectors looking for
someone to look it up for them, or maybe even send them the tube, connector or
other part from their junk box at no cost. Rarely do you see someone offer up
front to pay for the item. Maybe they would offer to pay after someone offers
them the item, but it is not that evident at the outset. I used to send out
connectors, hardware and other stuff just to help out. Now with increased
postage rates and limited time to find suitable packing, box it up and take it
to
the post office or shipping company, I can no longer do that gratis. Good guy
or
not, it is just not worth the hassle unless a fair price is paid and the
postage covered.

I do have an extensive library of manuals, catalogs and reference books and I
am glad to look up things for folks. A goodly number of manuals are now
available free or at reasonable cost for a quality reprint. Therefore, I will
no
longer take the time to go to Kinkos or other copy place to reproduce a manual
for free. The only time I would even offer is if it happened to be a rare
manual what I was sure was not available anywhere else. Also, there is the
copyright law bit and I have been challenged about that several times by
overzealous
clerks at the copy stores. Although most of these materials are very old and
the companies are in many cases defunct, nobody knows if someone out there
still
holds a copyright. For instance, in the case of Hallicrafters, the name is
owned by an electronics company and Drake is still in business although neither
is in the ham gear market at this point.

Hi Duane and all,

I plugged in an order with FT last night just to see how far it would
go. I got right up to the shipping but didn't give them my card number
and there was no mention of a minimum orderunless I somehow missed
it.  Even then, I would gladly pay $15.00 for a sheet of filter if I
needed it.  I am sure there are other goodies on that site that one
could order to make up the $15.00 minimum that would be usable items
around the shack. For that matter, one could order several sheets of
filter, keep one and sell the excess.

I happened to load up on the original stuff when it was still
available so I have my own "lifetime" supply.

The usual disclaimers apply.

Now I have to blow off some steam:  I subscribe to many

asking for freebees and others for difficult to find items. It appears
that many are too lazy to do some very basic research to find what they

"let your fingers do the walking"? Researching on the web is
certainly not brain surgery and you will be amazed what you will find

lifetime supply wouldn't have to be very large... hi hi... 73's, Charlie...

  Hi Duane and all,

I plugged in an order with FT last night just to see how far it would go. I
got right up to the shipping but didn't give them my card number and there was
no mention of a minimum orderunless I somehow missed it. Even then, I
would gladly pay $15.00 for a sheet of filter if I needed it. I am sure there
are other goodies on that site that one could order to make up the $15.00
minimum that would be usable items around the shack. For that matter, one could
order several sheets of filter, keep one and sell the excess.

I happened to load up on the original stuff when it was still available so I
have my own "lifetime" supply.

Good point, John.  My request was just in passing, but
out of curiosity I plugged in "drake 4-line blue filter" to
Google and got numerous references to blue lamps,  many links to
WA9TGT's filters, WB4HFN's page linking to TGT's, but none that I could
find which linked to the Lee Filters number.  I didn't try searching
the "drakelist" archive because I couldn't find the
archive.  Even the link from the Drakelist page didn't
work.

Re: [drakelist] 4 line blue filters

2007-11-07 Thread n7ioh
John you are absolutely correct and it's not just here but on all the
groups that I belong to. Just taking the time to search the web and
the groups archives will provide a wealth of information. The other
thing I see is someone will ask a question and it has been answered.
Now it seems like everyone else wants to get some attention so the
question now gets another 10 or 20 more answers to the same
question. Sometimes a little more information MAY be needed, this I
understand. I also know that sometimes you have submitted an answer
along with a few others at the same time so there will be some
repeated answers. But to drag a simple Q & A on for days is going a
little overboard. It just ends up taking up a lot of computer space
and fills up my mail box unnecessarily.

I use Lee Lighting #172, which is an exact color match for the original
Drake film. It is only about half the thickness of the original, but the
color is identical.

Some have suggested the Roscolene #853 as being an exact match, but I
have never seen that one. I believe it is also the thinner material like
the Lee Lighting.

A 20" x 24" sheet was about $5 the last time I bought it. The trick is
finding a theatrical lighting supplier that will sell to an individual.
There was one in Atlanta, but the last time I tried to get a sheet, they
had gone out of business.

OK, well I have a spare set of the blue filters on their way to me.
(Apparently, I got my order in before he ran out.)

I can't remember the prices of the filters vs. the LEDs but I'll trade
you a set of the filters for a set of the LEDs. Always kinda wanted to
see how the LEDs look.

Here's another idea. I have the original blue filters from my 4-line
that I'll just send you if you like. The rig was packed in a box for 20
years so they didn't fade much..

If your address is good in QRZ I'll just drop 'em in the mail tomorrow.
