I am using version 8.05 in two different computers. I
received an old computer from a friend of mine (Dick, SM3CBR)
to put in my shack. He is using the same version.
In every new qso on that computer I get the information ARRL

looks crazy having to do it for each qso.
I changed the Key certificate to my own but the the problem
 still exists.
I can not find any configuration which could lead this to an
end.
When I asked Dick about this matter, he said that it was an
old thing happened when he changed log program and imported
the ADIF file from old DOS program WJ2O.
Any suggestions how we could get read of this unwanted

Re: [Dx4win] QSO Look Up anomaly

2012-11-29 Thread Kjell W. Strom

Why would one want to do that? The DX Cluster is meant to
provide information on operations that may be of special
interest to fellow users, not to be a copy of my logbook. If
everybody did that, the DX Clusters would be overloaded and not
so useful.

Use manually Alt-A with discretion!

Sorry, sure that this subject has been discussed here, but
not finding it, the question is: When sorting out, in beahlf
of one friend, his WPX application for Honor Roll, I've
 followed the following procedure:
 *Reports*
 *Award : WPX*
 *Report/Action: Submission*
 *Modes: Phone*
 *Bands: All Bands*
*Award: Mixed (I've tried with only 'Mode' or only 'Bands'
 and I got same
 result)*
 *OK*
 **
I got one file (.csv file) that shows NOT only unique
prefixes (as requested by WPX) but instead I got one list
that repeats the same prefix several times...not good for WPX
 application undoubtely!
Does anybody has one solution for this, obtaining one list
 only with unique prefixes?

 Thanks.

I had wondered the same question.. Just one follow-up.

I use the local connection (to VE7CC). Is there a way to
move this to the top of the list (currently 5th) so I can use
 the 3 x ENTER process.

Is there an option to clear, automatically, all the old spots
when starting a new session. If not this would be a useful
option.

Yes, there is no auto-login. However, once you have chosen
 a node, the
next time you start DX4WIN, move the mouse pointer into the
 the Packet
Spots window, then type the ENTER key three times. The
 first time it
says there's no connection. The second time brings up node
 list. And
the third time selects node at the top of the list. Then you
should
get your node login prompt in the Packet Spots window.

Slashed 0 is fine as long as it used for display purposes

However, writing a slash-0 to an ADIF file (which this case
was) is a no-no. It's possible that the software that
generated the ADIF file allowed you to log a callsign and
type in a slash-0 for the 0. Either way, not good.

now I cannot get the packet spots received to indicate the
arrival
instead of the actual time. I right clicked on the packet
 window and
highlighted SORT and chose arrival as I always did and the
spots
indicate the actual time in hours, minutes. In the past
 when I chose
ARRIVAL it would indicate the aged minutes the spot was
received.

I could not find the setting, George. Export your 8.04
preferences to a .INI file, then import that file into your
8.05 preferences. See if that fixes the problem.

When the cursor is in the Mode window, type the first letter of

Dear Mr. Reisert: Thank you for responding.

I gave the referenced link another try and found a dead end

Your belief that ZIP files are less likely to be corrupted
than the actual file is truly fascinating and a novel idea
that I will discuss with my colleague in the Computer Science
department. It would not ever have occurred to me.

The need for a matching file was not apparent. Thank you for
pointing out its importance, although I have no expectation
of exporting information from DX4WIN other than to the
printer when printing labels. The second paragraph of the
Installation instructions includes: Extract the ADIF.PMP

Not clear where the archive is to be accessed.

PLUS, you MUST download the matching ADIF.PMP that comes with

  2. To operate CW I need to click on CW MESSAGES area on

it is not convinient and DX4WIN allows to use CW memos from
 being on

  3. I activate feature QSO-SPECIAL/CW/RTTY MESSAGES. Now I
can press

  4. But if I need to stop sending CW (i Did mistake,
 doubling, whatever

 But instead
it cancels real time ENTRY and CW is going on. To stop CW
message I
need to highlite CW Keyboard window and press Esc.

This feature works perfectly in DX4WIN 702. Just checked as

Re: [Dx4win] CW and Esc

2009-12-25 Thread Kjell W. Strom

The earliest version of DX4WIN on my computer is 7.04.04. It
behaves just like 8.03 in the Special Keys mode as do 7.05, 7.06
and 7.07.
Probably not many people are using this function. I, for one,
never tried it before I read about Nodir's mention about it
here. At least on my setup, two ticks on the DIT paddle stops
the transmission.

2009-12-06 Thread Kjell W. Strom
Larry,

I can create the same situation with the original MicroKeyer and
DX4WIN 7.07.2 and I found two ways out of it:

1. Don't click on Stop Radio, just exit DX4WIN and the frequency
control window will show up normally when you start next
morning. Keep your radio running until you have closed DX4WIN.

2. If you are still stuck, click on Set Frequency instead of
Start Radio. There may be a small bug in the program there.

message in DX4WIN. The mKII goes off with the rig since it
 is powered
by it, but I make no effort to close the router software.

Morning comes, I flip the rig on (mKII comes on with it).
When I select start radio from DX4WIN I get the Radio
timed out;
radio interface has been disabled message. The router
software
appears to be seeing the rig as it is accurately displaying
the
frequency, but there is no way to talk to the rig from
 DX4WIN. I have
tried a variety of sequences of rebooting equipment and
 software, but
the only thing that seems to get DX4WIN talking to the rig
 again is to
  reboot the PC.

I suspect I am missing something fundamental here in a
sequence of
events that must take place, but would appreciate some
 insight as to
  what it might be.

 Hi,

I have just been given a Iomega usb back up drive for my PC.
Can anyone recommend any software that will enable automatic
back-up of my files - especially DX4Win of course? I have
tried iomega's own software and that keeps failing just on
the point of finishing a back-up.

As a former naval navigator, I have been following this
discussion with interest. I agree with Jim that it makes most
sense to use true north. The magnetic pole shifts each year,
and the amount of shift is indicated on nautical charts as
the Variation. Each bearing taken with a magnetic compass
must be corrected for the Variation, and while the
year-to-year change is small, it means that every time you
realign your antenna, you have to recalculate the correction.
While DX4W may permit an offset, it makes no sense to me to
use magnetic north a) because it shifts, and b) because any
program that I have found that calculates bearings and
distance always is based on the geographic north pole.
Nautical charts are always related to true north.

It makes more sense to me to set up your antenna once to true
north using an available magnetic compass, and then to
establish a point or datum on the ground as the true north
alignment point for future realignments due to beam changes,
maintenance, storm damage, etc. That is what I do and it has
 worked very successfully.

 For what it is worth.

DX4WIN beam headings are referenced to the geographic

90 degrees North Latitude. There is no way for DX4WIN to
 know the
heading to magnetic north from your particular QTH. I am
 not aware
of ANY program that can do this.

What DX4WIN should have, and I can't find it at the
 moment, is a way
to program an offset into the rotator control. Then if
your
antennas were aligned to magnetic North, DX4WIN could
 compensate for
this. Maybe Guy ON4AOI knows if such a feature exists.

The Sandisk Ultra Backup looks like a good solution to backing

for around $40 or EUR35.

2009-01-14 Thread Kjell W. Strom
Joe,

I just received notice of an available security update for
Windows XP. My computer is set not to accept automatic updates,
so I am safe, but how is JR's log? Around 12Z on a Wednesday
seems to be the standard time for MS updates.

Last year this procedure caused an infamous crash at Skype,
because so many connected computers cut the link and were reset
at the same time.

About once every month or two, my father W1JR loses his log.
The W1JR.dxl file just disappears from the SAVE directory.
Does anyone else share this experience?

I have never lost my log in the many years I have used the
program.

The *only* possible cause I can think of is shutting down the
computer before the log has been written from memory cache to
disk. (I leave my computers on all the time, sorry Al Gore.)
 It's NOT a slow computer - Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, 7200 RPM
 hard drive, etc.

I'd love to figure out how to prevent this problem, as panic
usually ensues until I can restore the most recent copy of
the log from one of the many backup locations (the log is
backed up at least three ways, not counting the ways DX4WIN
 backs things up).

 Thanks 73 - Jim AD1C

RE: [Dx4win] Freq doesn't change properly when clicking a spot.

2008-12-11 Thread Kjell W. Strom
Hello,

Same thing with FT-1000D here. I have CW display offset set to
400 Hz, i.e. when I listen to a CW signal with 400 Hz pitch, the
display shows his true frequency. But now DX4WIN sends me 400 Hz
HIGHER than that the first time I click.

with a second click I arrive at the correct frequency for the
spotted station. But if I next click once on an SSB spot, the
radio is sent to a frequency which is 400 Hz LOWER than the
spotted frequency. Again, a second click sets the radio to the
actual spot frequency.

I am experiencing some problems with the latest version...

Using identical rig files, as we used in 7.05.03 , here's
 what is happening in 7.06.02.

 1. If the rig is on SSB and I click on a CW spot, say
 7044, the rig goes
to 7044.7. If I click on the same spot again, the rig shows
7044...
 2. If I then click on another CW spot, the rig goes to the
correct
 frequency.
 3. If I then click on a SSB spot 14185 (Rig still on CW),
 the rig goes
to 14184.3. If I click on the same spot, the frequency read
14185...

Something has changed in the latest version of DX4WIN

I have switched back and forth between the versions...and
have the same rig files in both

Can anyone else verify the above?

Sounds like a similar problemthere is definitely
something different in the latest versionI cleared my
problem by changing the offset frequency in both rigs, which
is the first time I ever had to do that...

 Amount of what offset?

There are two Pro III .RIG files, try both and see if the

my rig.

I have a Pro III at home, I can try this tonight.

RE: [Dx4win] Freq doesn't change properly when clicking a spot.

2008-12-11 Thread Kjell W. Strom
Guy,

As far as I can see, the rig files are identical to previous
versions. In FT-1000 the offset is added internally direct to
the display. It looks like v.7.06 now is adding an offset to
the actual frequency before it is sent to the radio every time
when a change of mode command is sent. This may be right for the
two rigs you had problems with, but not for the 98 percent which
worked OK before.

You must step backwards to the point where the fix was applied
and make sure that it is limited to the few problem radios.
Maybe Paul can get away by adding an IF...ELSE statement...

Hi all,

Yes the CAT part of the program is changed , Paul and I spend
much time in solving the problem

For the OMNIVII rig and the K3 rig, but didn´t found or have any
problems with my IC7800.

If you are aware how to change a rigfile via the radio database
(closed log )

you can try to give a little delay (100ms) next to the command
line for

set vfo A or

set vfo B or

set mode or

set mode B

make sure you make a backup of the rigfile first
!!!

In the omniVII file we had to put a 100ms delay in one cmdline
because the radio

couldn´t process the correct sended commands.

Roger,

It's not a big deal and as long as you stay with one mode, you
won't notice it. If it happens, you can get it right by clicking
on the spot a second time.

Anybody, who has written more than two lines of programming
code, knows how difficult it is to avoid small mishaps like
this, when changes are made. I am sure that Paul Co will have
it under control soon.

2007-10-03 Thread Kjell W. Strom
Scot,
Many years ago I was also using KAM and KAM+. I used a crossed
ellipses display on a monitorscope for easy tuning and was quite
happy.

Later I was running KAM+ in parallel with PTC-II and found that
PTC-II was one step ahead in reception of weak signals. But the
spectrum tuning display on a row of LEDs is not so convenient.

Now I have MMTTY via MicroKeyer in parallel with PTC-II. Weak
signal performance is about equal but MMTTY is very flexible and
so comfortable to use, especially for logging with DX4WIN. I am
still keeping PTC-II for Pactor and AMTOR, but for RTTY it will
be MMTTY.

[Dx4win] Callsign not printed

2007-04-22 Thread Kjell W. Strom
Jim,

The official who composed the Greek prefix did not know his ITU
Radio Regulations, which state that it must consist of two
characters and one digit, e.g. J42. Still you will have to deal
with it.

For temporary licenses. however, there is no limit set for the
length of the suffix. It does not take much knowledge of human
nature to realize that worse is still to come!

 Hi Kjell,

The longest typical callsign is something like this:

  HB0/DL1ABO/P

 which is 12 characters.

However, these calls were active in 2004:

  J42004/OE3MZC
  J42004/PA2JWN
  J42004/SP5MXZ

These cause problems in DX4WIN because the program truncates
them to:

  J42004/OE3MZ
  J42004/PA2JW
  J42004/SP5MX

If you were to enter those calls in DX4WIN, instead of
Greece, it would say Austria, Netherlands and Poland,
respectively. I had to add callsign exceptions to fix them.
