[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc Opportunity at Cary Institute

2016-06-09 Thread Patricia A. Jones
The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is recruiting a Postdoctoral
Associate to work with an exciting new, multi-institutional,
interdisciplinary research project—the Urban Resilience
Sustainability Research Network—focused on resilience of cities in the face
of extreme events.

Postdoctoral Associates will be based at the Cary Institute with a focus on
Baltimore, but will work with a large network of researchers from 8 other
cities Hermosillo (Sonora, Mexico), Miami FL, New York NY, Phoenix AZ,
Portland OR, San Juan PR, Syracuse NY, and Valdivia (Chile).

Postdoc will participate in synthesis of social, ecological, and
technological data to investigate how extreme events influence urban
ecosystems and future sustainability. For example, a
research project may include the drought of record for Baltimore where we
have data on the hydrologic, biogeochemical and social responses to the
drought. Synthesis of these diverse datasets
will shed light on how urban systems respond to extreme events.

Preferred candidates will have expertise in hydrology and biogeochemistry
of urban ecosystems and synthesis. Expertise in GIS or modeling would also
be desirable. The postdoctoral researcher
will have opportunities to develop independent lines of research in the
context of the funded project. Additional qualifications include: Ph.D. in
Ecology, Environmental Science and/or
Engineering, Sustainability Science or related field required. Competence
in hydrology, biogeochemistry, GIS or modeling is highly desirable.

This is a salaried, exempt, benefitted position for one year with possible
extension. Final candidates will be required to successfully complete a
post-offer, pre-employment screening and background check. All candidates
must be authorized to work in the U.S.

The new hire will be expected to interact strongly with our largely
ecosystem-oriented current staff (http://www.caryinstitute.org/science-
program/our-scientists).    Ecologists studying the factors influencing
persistence of aquatic biodiversity, biogeochemical function and/or
management of aquatic ecosystems in the face of climate change, watershed
and urban development, and species invasions are particularly encouraged to
apply. The Cary Institute has a tradition of encouraging long-term studies
and we expect the successful candidate to strengthen the Institute in one
or more of the following thematic areas: large-river ecology, urban
ecosystems, biogeochemistry and land-water interactions.

The Cary Institute, an independent research and education organization, is
located on a 2000-acre (810 hectare) research forest in the Hudson River
Valley of New York. Over 50 collaborating Ph. D. scientists, and 14 full
time scientists, investigate the functioning of all kinds of ecosystems
(including forests, fresh waters, and cities) and human interactions with
these ecosystems. Institute scientists often are actively involved in
outreach, management, and policy activities to apply their science to the
real world. We seek individuals who can join this team and establish
interdisciplinary collaborations that extend the Institute’s work.

Visit us at: http://www.caryinstitute.org

We will begin to review applications for these positions on 1 February
2015, with the anticipation of a start date early in 2016. To apply,
please visit www.caryinstitute org and complete the online application
available under the “Jobs” section. Please include your curriculum vitae,
