[Elecraft] Way OT - eBay - HELP

2006-05-31 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Sorry about this OT. I keep getting nasty messages from ebay and ebay
customers saying that I have not paid for this or that. I have NEVER used
ebay nor have an account with them, and since none of my neighbours do
either my question is 'How does one contact a HUMAN at ebay?' All my
messages to them seem to go into some Computer Black Hole.

Again, sorry for the bandwidth.

Those messages are not from eBay. They're phishing, trying to get you to
respond so they can get your email addresss.

Most likely the messages aren't from ebay, but from someone attempting to get
you to fill in some form with your account information(of course, you have no
account).

Best course of action is to simply delete the messagesor you can forward

Re: [Elecraft] RIT/XIT

2006-05-31 Thread Tom Althoff
While I currently never use RIT/XIT and rely on the A/B split feature I
think I am going to try to learn to incorporate their use in my daily
operation. Their advantage for most 5kHz splits would be to allow me to
leave VFO-A set for CW mode and CW freqs and VFO-B for SSB mode in the phone
band and still be able to work most splits. Of course, 40-SSB still
requires the wider range of the A/B split.

I'd love to hear more about W4TD's external VFO. I wonder if he has a
website with info on what he did?

Subject: [Elecraft] RIT/XIT

There are several buttons on my K2 that are rarely
(if ever) used - for instance, I never use RIT and XIT
since split operation is available.

I agree. I've never understood what problem
XIT is intended to solve. Both RIT/XIT are completely
unnecessary in a rig with split and I detest using
that tiny knob in lieu of the Main VFO knob.

Hi Bill Don,

I like this feature and use it quite frequently. It
comes in very handy in contests, particularly when
folks call off your frequency. N1MM toggles RIT/XIT
from the bandmap screen. I set mine RIT a bit off
frequency and I can flip/flop back and forth to see if
someone is calling a bit out of my window.

It's also faster for hitting DX who are listening
higher or lower than their simplex frequency.

I generally only use the second VFO for the monster
pileups where you can be 5 to 10 kHz away from the Tx
station's frequency.

Of course, I went without VFO B and used RIT/XIT more
frequently in the past. I may be more comfortable with
it.

One of the guys at work, W4TD, built an outboard VFO
for his K2. It's quite nice. Two features that I
really like are a display of the VFO B frequency and a
split LED. They both would keep idiots like me from
making a mistake and Txing on the wrong frequency,
because I thought I was/wasn't split and I'd know
where I was Txing as well.

I don't know how many devices you can hang on the
serial port, before you start bogging the K2 and/or
computer down. The outboard VFO sure is cute, but will
have four devices daisy chained off the K2 port.

Cheers,
Julius

Geoff,

My advice is to not respond to them. I get about one messages a
weel, saying my paypall account is on hold, or answer a question from
a buyer on ebay. They are what is called Phishing, and they are
trying to get your personal information or account numbers. Hold the
mouse over the response address, and it may say that the real address
is something else.

I agree about eBay and others being Computer Black Holes. If they

money as it is.

[Elecraft] A 2006 K2-B w/ Color TFT?

2006-05-31 Thread Fred (FL)
Don -

I'm not trying to interface my PC or notebook, to my
K2 #5422.

Rather I was suggesting one simple, or not so simple,
2006 technology upgrade path for the K2. My premise
is that Elecraft will probably not create a K3 any
time soon. But the designers did make the xcvr very
modular - with a front panel, control, and RF board.

My quest would be able to buy and build a KSD2,
a display upgrade option for my K2. I'm sure there
would be many hams who are perfectly happy with their
K2 just as it is. Others not.

   KSD2 TFT Display Option . $199
   KSD2B Memory/Processor Upgrade $49
   KSD2C TFT Data Programmer Kit . $99

I was a software computer engineer for part of my
previous life career. And I can imagine that the K2
may be so maxed out with microcode, and memory space
-that making these changes for an optional TFT display
- would be prohibitive and impossible.
But I don't know that is the case.

Retired now - maybe I just would like another build
project option for this great little K2 I built.
Winter is coming. I've a lot of Kester solder left.
And I have the technical curiosity to hope for a
K2 optional TFT upgrade product.

For sure I know, I do not want a software defined HF
transceiver, that I've seen somewhere. Give me
knobs, buttons, and a TFT color display of what's
going on in my K2 (ala IC-7000)

RE: [Elecraft] K2 FOR SALE

2006-05-31 Thread Darwin, Keith
Sorry to hear about that Bill. I second the thought that not being able
to build a K2 does not mean you don't get the pleasure of operating a
K2.

I spent a couple of months building my K2. I plan to spend many years
operating it. If you skip the building phase and go straight to
operating you'll still get 90% of the enjoyment out of the rig.

Also, if your condition is intermittent (or even temporary) you might
get periods of relief when you could build. That would be a great time
to do one of the options as they are smaller and take less time.

Well, my luck has run out and I thought I could finish the K2.
Everything was fine, until I couldn't hold onto the soldering iron
anymore. No, not the heated end either. LOL. I am shaking so much again,
that I had to stop and give up. You never know when this will happen so
I thought I would be able to build the kit. With the help of Scott at
Elecraft and the members of he group, I have done quite well so
far. However, the time has come to stop and face the music. I am afraid I
am going to do some type of damage to the kit because of this problem.
Darn, just when I thought my health problems had gone away for awhile
and I thought I could finish the kit before they came back. Well, I
guess I lost this race. I am willing to sell the kit unfinished as is. I
have started to assemble the thyristor board and have been able to pass
all the tests but the 4.00 MHz test. Might just be the probe I
assembled. I have two damaged parts, that are being sent to me from
Elecraft. One is the VFO knob and the other is a resistor network that
I had damaged. Included with the kit is the K2 and the sideband option.
I will consider all offers and will be happy to email out of the room if
you have any questions. Thanks.

[Elecraft] K2 - TVI

2006-05-31 Thread Darwin, Keith
One of the benefits of running QRP is the reduction in TVI.
Unfortunately this time, it was no benefit.

My TV is interfering with my K2. Usually it is the other way around but
not this time :-)

I have an inverted v antenna right above the house. It is picking up
hash noise from the TV set. The ground mounted vertical, 40 feet away,
is quiet as a mouse. Fortunately the vertical works just as well or
better than the v so it's not a great loss.

I like Fred's idea. The K2 is a great radio with performance that need litle or
no improvement. However, if Elecraft offered a larger footprint case along with
a color TFT
display and more funtions given over to their own knobs and buttons instead of
the multiple menues, I'd be in line to pick one up in heartbeat. Of course I
have no idea if something like that is even possible, but it's fun to think

I agree with Rich. Be vigilant about this. I always forward these to the

IP address in the email when hovering the mouse over the supposed link and I
check who the IP is assigned to. Many times it comes from some Asian areas
which may be harder to get shut down. But I've noticed that the ones that come

time that I forward to my ISP [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or similar for PayPal).

Good luck!

I disagree about do not worry about them, if you respond it can lead
to idenity theft and no end of problems. The senders are thieves and
doing nothing just helps them succed. Best is to follow previously
posted advice and forward them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or [EMAIL PROTECTED]),
don't
change anything, just forward as is. That way you are helping
ebay/paypal track down the offenders and maybe reduce and/or eventually
eliminate the miscreants. Just my 2cents opinion.

I agree about eBay and others being Computer Black Holes. If they
really want your response, they will send your a letter via the postal
service. Mostly, do not worry about them.

[Elecraft] FW: POST TO ELECRAFT

2006-05-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
Posting on behalf of Manuel LU5OM who is currently having difficulty posting
to the reflector.
-
Hello everyone.
I need to get in touch with someone using a K2 + MICROHAM USB INTERFACE +
N1MM + LOGGER32...I have MICROHAM cable set for the K2 but I do not
understand the J5 connection (I believe its inside the K2)...I hooked up
everyhting yesterday but the K2 does not transmit. I downloaded the Router
software, checked every step and all was fine but no keying. The WINKEY
(inside Microham) is working fine but the K2 does not go on transmit. One
cable marked J5 (with a stereo 3.5 mm) is not connected anywhere. I don´t
know if that is the loosing piece.
I will be doing CW contesting with N1MM, general logging with LOGGER32 (SSB,
CW and RTTY).
Thank you for your help.

K2/100 # 5310

PS - By the way for those (like I was) who are still in doubt about SSB with
the K2... I finally followed Don's suggestion (W3fpr) and plugged in all
microphone jumpers. I decided on the Kenwood MC43S mike, plugged it in and
it works like a charm. It is troublesome not to have a monitor for your SSB
audio (I don´t have any other radio) but people are generally very helpful
on the air.

[Elecraft] Just built AADE capacitance meter - great!

2006-05-31 Thread n2htt
Just a burst of enthusiasm from a satisified customer - I just built an AADE
capacitance/inductance meter. Went together in about 1 1/2 hours, worked at
first power up -- what a nice instrument!

I will be building an HFPacker amp for use with my K1, thought it would be a
good idea to be able to check the caps as they go in. I do this routinely for
resistors.

[Elecraft] KPA100 tPA setting 0C - unable to edit setting - 40M parasitic

2006-05-31 Thread Verduyn Jan-qswi296

Hi All,

The fan of my K2/KPA100 will operate regardless of the temperature of
the heatsink. The setting of tPA has changed for some reason and now
shows 0C.
Problem is that the value tPA cannot be changed using edit and turning
the tuning control. Anyone experienced the same and found a solution?

As to the reason why tPA value changed: I wonder wether this problem was
caused by the 40 Meter Parasitic problem on my KPA100 similar to what
was discussed on this list a few weeks ago. I carried out the mod
suggested by Tom N0SS and repositioning the RF choke RFC10 near the
Antenna Socket. I can confirm the mod substantially reduced the
frequency of the parasitic and has almost completely cured it.

Geoff,

Everyone has pretty much covered the topic on the phony messages. I've
gotten them too. However, your comment about contacting a real live person
at eBay is a good one. They are there but apparently days behind answering
inquiries. Since time is a major issue when dealing on eBay, you need
timely help when there is a problem. The problem is you can't get it when
you need it. That is poor customer service in my opinion and I no longer
use eBay for that reason. If Elecraft or the company I work for treated
customers like eBay does, we'd be out of business!

You might try a bead balun on the inverted vee, if you do not already
have one. This will keep RF from the TV from flowing up the outside of
the coax and getting into your antenna. Also, rerouting the vee's
feedline away from the TV or its antenna lead might help. Finally, if
the TV has an external antenna, an old-fashioned highpass filter on the
TV set along with ferrites on the power cord will reduce the radiation
from the TV.

This is close to on-topic since a lot of Elecraft equipment gets bought/sold
on eBay.

I've been using eBay since 1998. I've had some major disputes with sellers
over items that were poorly packaged and damaged in transit. I've had major
disagreements with buyers who wouldn't pay, or would not accept packages
delivered to them. I've gone through the full-blown dispute resolution
process with one seller to get my money back.

In none of these cases was there ever a lack of information on the eBay (or
PayPal) sites. I've never felt the need to talk to a real person. In this
specific case (phishing scam), for example, there are FAQ articles that deal
with this issue -- hence the dozen or so responders here who knew about the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] email address. If people would make use of the help that's
there, they wouldn't complain about what's not (phone support).

I think eBay is one of the miracles of the Internet revolution. I went to
Dayton and saw a table with four Collins 75A-x receivers on it. eBay has
four listed today, and every day all year. I didn't see any Elecraft gear in
the flea market (though I heard there was a K2 there somewhere). Today on
eBay there is a K1, a K2, a T1, and an offer for someone to build your K2
for you for $180. It's like Hamvention on your computer, 24 hours a day, 365
days a year, only without the guys on those electric scooters running you
over. (Or, if you're one of the electric scooter guys, without all the
people between you and a good deal.)

I guess fewer bidders just means more stuff for me, but I wouldn't quit eBay
over the lack of phone-based support.

DITTO on your entire post.

Been on eBay likewise since early 1998 and will always be a member. Was even
thrown off once and wrote the founder of eBay himself and was promptly
reinstated. Like SSB years ago all the bitching and moaning how “that”
mode was just causing interference to the AM group which was most everyone back
then.

People hate change, no doubt. I sit back and laugh at the people screaming
that eBay was a terrible idea when that terrible idea made a few people
billionaires and put thousands to work, at the same time made many quit their
day jobs doing eBay full time. To the eBay haters I say: Welcome to the brave
new world where you can take it or leave it, but here it is to stay whether you
like it or not.

Note: That guy offering to build the K2 on eBay is a fine gentleman, he built
my K2/100 loaded for $120 which included shipping. He used to be on the
Elecraft builders list but college late in life and other things forced him to
spool down a bit.

The AmQRP ELSIE L/C meter kit will read capacitance down to 1pf.
I found out with this kit that I don't like Manhattan construction so I
rebuilt mine on a homebrew circuit card and real switches vs. the kit's
instructions to make some Mickey Mouse ones.
I can share the PCB design. I put it and the 9V battery in a Whitman's
Sampler box. I think the kit is retired so you will have to find someone who
doesn't want their kit. They just ran a last lot earlier this year I think.

Roland,

Resolution on this meter is down to a tenth of a pF. It does not read above 1
uF though, so the meter you bought will be useful for measuring larger caps.

I have a similar situation -- I already have a Fluke meter that reads
capacitance down to 1 nF -- not useful for measuring the small caps you come
across in kits.

I see Bob also sent the link, but here it is again:

Everyone has pretty much covered the topic on the phony messages. I've
gotten them too. However, your comment about contacting a real live person
at eBay is a good one. They are there but apparently days behind answering
inquiries. Since time is a major issue when dealing on eBay, you need
timely help when there is a problem. The problem is you can't get it when
you need it. That is poor customer service in my opinion and I no longer
use eBay for that reason. If Elecraft or the company I work for treated
customers like eBay does, we'd be out of business!

[QRP-L] LAITF and TAC Sprint this weekend

2006-05-31 Thread n0tu/Steve

Sounds like a worth while weekend to hit the QRP trail. Should be a
few signals on the air hopefully? I can see it now ...Let's see do I
send area code or bug? maybe both that'll confuse 'em for sure

My plan is to head off into the foothills of the Rockies with my
buddies. We'll be operating my KX1 and CF 44' doublet w/twinlead. See
you Saturday PM providing the thunderstorms don't keep me honkered
down? We'll post pictures when I return for all you arm chair

The most telling clue is that the message provides a link to click on. A
real message from Paypal or Ebay or any financial institution will NOT
provide a link to their web site. The message will tell you to go to your
account and log on.

The links are easy to forge. Clicking on the blue link that says
www.paypal.com may well send you to www.gotcha-sucker.com or some such
place. Of course, the site will say it's what you think it should be and
it'll look exactly like the real thing, including all the graphics, page
layout, etc., but it isn't the real thing.

[Elecraft] The Curious Case of the Missing RF

2006-05-31 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Day,
This weekend, as the twenty meter segment of the Elecraft CW Net was
getting under way, my K2/100 went a little crazy. After sending for about one
minute the relays started chattering, the keyer response was in no way related
to paddle input, and upon later reports my signal went from a fine tone to a
hiss. During the short time of reliable sending I responded to Tom's (N0SS)
kind offer to take the net with a series of Cs and went QRT. I was forced to
use a lesser rig :( to run the 40 meter net. My Icom 706 is not the best at
full QSK with its relays clacking in my ear and the sidetone fixed to the AF
Gain level. The filter in no way resembles the response I get with my K2's
filter choices.
In between nets I pulled the amplifier off and found the culprit. Here is
where we segue back so put on a good Jim Reeves album or one by my favorite:
Marty Robbins. This is the time for a good ballad telling the tale of missteps
in one's life. Set the dial on Professor Peabody's Way Back machine to the
recent QRP to the Field and the place to Bald Mountain State Park. N7NLU and I
are working the contest with our Elecraft rigs. He, of course, is doing much
better than I but we both had fun until the downpour told us to pack up our
things. As I drove back toward Banks the winds were so strong they were
slowing my F250 significantly. The downpour was making visibility quite poor.
But both the gear and I returned home safely.
As I was drying myself by the fire and talking with Sam (the cat) I started
rewinding the antennas in the correct disposition and unpacking the hastily
stowed gear. Wandering into the shack I sat and found the screwdriver to
replace the original top with its ATU with the amplifier top. Here is where
the story may provide clues so stay awake :) I found a couple of text books
and set them under the inverted amplifier. Then I proceeded to poke plug A
onto pin B all the way from the front to the back of the rig. Since dinner was
next on the agenda the inspection faze of the rebuild was cursory at best.
WARNING: don't do this at your shack!! And so on to dinner.
The next day's nets and those the week after went well. I got and gave
good reports across the continent. Well as good as could be expected under
Spring storm conditions. This brings us to Sunday the 28th and the
commencement of the twenty meter net. Since I've already related that part of
the tale I'll not bore you with a coda. I will jump to the problem staring me
in the face when I inspected the AUX RF connection to the main RF board. The
inner wire of the coax's part of the plug had been pushed out of its normally
seated state. For the last few weeks I had been running in a potentially
intermittent state. I reseated the wire with its little brass thingie into the
plug. This did not solve my problem. In fact I had lost all RF output from
the amplifier. At this point I could still hear with the rig. Later I lost
hearing as well.
On Monday I went to see Ron D'Eau Claire in Forest Grove. We chatted for a
while and I mentioned the sad state of my K2/100. He aimed me at further tests
and asked for a follow up email. After all of my errands were done I walked
through his measurements. The finals were still alive to my surprise. I had
not smoked them as I had feared. (This would not explain the deafness of my
rig however.) Further tests were necessary. I pulled the AUX RF plug and the
power to the amp. Found a BNC to SO-239 adapter, a gel cell, and the barrel
connector for the K2. Most of this was still in my gear from the QRPTTF
expedition. The rig worked. It could hear and it could transmit. But, when I
replaced the amplifier top's connections and ran the antenna through the SO-239
on the amp it was deaf and dumb even at low power. Hmmm... curious. Emails
to Ron and Don, W3FPR, provided me with a few more steps. I took some of the
readings but in checking the RF AUX connection for the umpteenth time I worried
the shield connection to the point of failure.
At this point I decided it was better to get some rest before proceeding.
Since the next day was a work day I was unable to complete the tests or repairs
for quite some time. Not a good day at the office while one is worried about
their K2! When I got home I had three projects: repair the OS on my computer,
troubleshoot some electronics for work, and fix my K2. Each of these was done
in turn or simultaneously. Since I had about thirty feet of RG-174 lying
around I cut a new cable. I did not have either the time nor the desire to
pull the amp PCB off so I undid the connections from the part side and surface
soldered the shield. The inner wire connection wicked clean so I was able to
mount that through hole. The brass parts in the Molex connecter were another
story. I did not want to risk deforming them into uselessness so I soldered
the coax

[Elecraft] KX2 ?, (Long. OT)

2006-05-31 Thread Glen Torr
Howdy All,

As I left work last Friday it was with heavy heart as I had just read on the
ABC web site that Lincoln Hall, one of our great adventurer / mountaineer /
writers had passed away while descending from the summit of Mt. Everest

I awoke to the miraculous news on Saturday morning that reports of
Lincolns passing were incorrect, his expedition had radioed that he had
passed away and left him but an American climber had found him alive the
next morning (reports are sketchy) however he is alive and nearing or at
base camp and things are looking optimistic.

I have been interested in Antarctic exploration (and amateur radio) all my
life and have heard Lincoln talk. I got out some of his books from my
library and was staggered to see some of the connections with amateur radio
in a book called The Loneliest Mountain co written by Lincoln with
Jonathan Chester and an account of an expedition to climb Mt. Minto in
Antarctica.

In Lincoln's book on the Mt. Minto expedition I came across the following
end note on Field Communications. The second field radio was a very
compact 1 - watt HF Codan 8332 hand held transceiver that had both a whip
and dipole antennae. and later The radio was, however, instrumental in
saving Chris Hilton's life and mine.

I love my KX1 most of my radios, the K2 is nearing completion but the KX1 is
the favourite. I was thinking, in view of some suggestions for new Elecraft
Kits of a KX2, a 5 watt ssb 5 and 18 MHz rig (Channelised backpack group
type frequencies) that might appeal to wilderness travellers. Serious groups
now use Iridium but I am sure there are many outdoors folk that could be
induced to amateur radio with such a rig.

I have been browsing EMRFD (Epiphyte) and my WM-20 manual looking at qrp ssb
since.

Cheers

Glen

Good to hear you found the problem, Kevin!

I remove the K2 side panel nearest the connectors when I replace my KPA100.
That way I can make sure the cables are properly positioned in the cutout in

Then I replace the side panel.

[Elecraft] Useful DMM/Cap/Transistor Meters (WAS: Just built AADE capacitance meter - great!)

2006-05-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
If you're in the market for a new DMM, the mid-range Radio Shack DMM's
provide these capabilities as well. One time I suddenly needed a part for my
Fluke and I was in the middle of building - my K2 IIRC. So I trucked down to
the local RS store and picked up a meter to use in the interim. It's a real
workhorse. It measures:

Voltage, resistance and current, of course current up to about 10 amps I
believe.

You can plug a transistor into a socket provided and it'll report the type
of transistor, the gain and identify the leads.

Capacitance from a couple of pF to many, many microfarads. It has about 100
pF stray capacitance, but a 5 pF cap reads exactly 5 pF more than the
stray minimum cap it indicates with nothing connected.

Temperature with a probe supplied.

Frequency through the audio range.

Of course, it has front-panel contacts for critical measurements to avoid
having the leads in the circuit.

The only thing it doesn't measure that I want regularly is inductance. I
have an inductance measuring device built from an ARRL Handbook circuit
that uses the DMM as a readout. Quite accurate enough from a one or two
microhenries up to several millihenries.

I got RS meter about seven years ago, but I see they seem to keep a meter
with those capabilities in the US$80 to $90 range in their regular
instrument lineup.

Yeah, I fixed the Fluke. The Fluke is faster. The RS meter takes about 2 or
3 seconds to produce a reading while the Fluke is virtually instantaneous. I
compared them side-by-side and compared those with a third high-end meter I
own and all three agree on Ohms, Volts and Amps across the scale wherever
I've happened to check them within 1% or better. Usually they dial up
identical values on the display when connected together.

The slow speed of the RS isn't an issue for me because I have an old VOM
(wiggly meter movement volt-ohm-amp meter) that I use for peaking things,
or I use my o'scope.

Mark,

I suggest you use an RF Probe (there were parts for on in your K2 kit) and
follow the steps on the Transmit Signal Tracing in the K2 manual
Troubleshooting section. Do the steps indicated in the order listed.

Let us know where the RF voltage drops off significantly (it will likely be
higher than expected prior to the failing stage since your K2 has no output).
Once you have determined that point, we can investigate that stage in detail
and hopefully resolve your problem.

remaining, unwanted furniture was put on ebay, the proceeds to be split
among them.
My friend received a call from Santa Clare County demanding tax from the

The links are easy to forge. Clicking on the blue link that says
www.paypal.com may well send you to www.gotcha-sucker.com or some such

it'll look exactly like the real thing, including all the graphics, page
layout, etc., but it isn't the real thing.

Eudora warns you that the link ain't that it says it isand conveniently
shows you the real url.

That's one of the reasons ebay and payapl ask for the message to be forarded in
its original form...so they can see the bogus url.

Re: [Elecraft] Way OT - eBay - HELP

2006-05-31 Thread Tom McCulloch
As others have indicated, this is most likely a dishonest attempt to get you
to give information. One way to check is as follows. If the questionable
e-mail has a link for you to click on DO NOT CLICK ON IT, but rather place
your cursor over the link and look at the bottom left of your browse (if you
are using Microsoft Explorer, that is). This shows you the destination that
the link will send you to, if you click. It probably has nothing to do with
e-bay but belongs to the bad guys.

As was stated in earlier responses, this is becoming a problem and the bogus
e-mail often looks very convincing.

I've recently received these phishing attempts from someone claiming to be
PayPal (but wasn't) saying very matter of factly, that PayPal made a payment
from my account (which I never authorized, of course). It even had the
amount and to whom it was being sent (both fictitious). Then it said, if I
had any question to simply click on the link, of course I was tempted to get
to the bottom of that, but when I saw where the link was sending me I
realized it was a phish.

Be Careful, this really stinks.

Subject: [Elecraft] Way OT - eBay - HELP

Sorry about this OT. I keep getting nasty messages from ebay and ebay
customers saying that I have not paid for this or that. I have NEVER used
ebay nor have an account with them, and since none of my neighbours do
either my question is 'How does one contact a HUMAN at ebay?' All my
messages to them seem to go into some Computer Black Hole.

Again, sorry for the bandwidth.

Re: [Elecraft] Just built AADE capacitance meter - great!

2006-05-31 Thread Matt Osborn
The M3 Universal Frequency Counter/Power Meter is one of the most
frequently used tools on my bench (after only my DMM).

M3 produces some fine tools that are also fun to build.

it's hfe and stuff like that, another cool little toy. 73 de Alex NS6Y

Just a burst of enthusiasm from a satisified customer - I just

1 1/2 hours, worked at first power up -- what a nice instrument!

I will be building an HFPacker amp for use with my K1, thought it
would be a good idea to be able to check the caps as they go in. I
 do this routinely for resistors.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Awards Program

2006-05-31 Thread Larry Makoski W2LJ
I should post this more often as Wayne and Eric are like the Pied
Piper. There are more and more new Elecrafters joining the family
every day; and I forget that a lot of the newer members are not aware of
the Elecraft Awards Program.

For details, please visit:
http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/index%20page%2010.html

The basic info is that there are currently six awards that you can work
towards using your Elecraft rig.

The easiest is the Elecraft Ragchewer's Award. Use your KX-1, K1 or K2
and have a QSO that last longer than 30 minutes; and you qualify. How
easy is that?

The Elecraft Century Club. You earn this by using your Elecraft rig to
have QSOs with 100 different other Elecrafters who are using their
Elecraft rigs. You keep track of their callsign, rig model and serial
number.

The Elecraft Worked All States Award. Work all 50 United States using
your Elecraft rig.

The 50 in 50 Award. This is the Elecraft Worked All States Award on
steroids. Work all 50 United States; but this time each Ham that you
are QSOing with must be using an Elecraft rig. Only one amateur, KØZK
has earned this award so far. How long will it take to issue
certificate number 2? It's been 15 months so far!

The DX Chaser Award - submit proof (log) of having worked 100 or more
different DXCC entities using your Elecraft rig.

Endorsements will be made for 200, 300 and ultimately Honor Roll status.

The 100 in 100 Award. This is the DX Chaser Award pumped up. Work 100
DXCC entities; but this time the Ham you have QSOed with must have been
using an Elecraft rig, also. This award will probably be the ultimate
and the hardest to achieve . for now. But I have a feeling that as
we give Wayne and Eric more and more time to sell more Elecraft
transceivers around the world; that this pinnacle will be reached sooner
rather than later!

73 es good DX!
