Re: [Elecraft] K2 #5613 BFO low freq problem
Add a small capacitor in parallel with C173. I would imagine 10-20pF would drop the low frequency down into the desired range. -John KI6WX My problem is the following: BFO High Freq 4,916.98 KHz and it is greater than 4916.3 as it should be. BFO Low Freq 4,912.92 KHz, this is higher than what it should be (4,912.7). Although the range is OK (4.06Khz is the range I get, which is greater than the minimum 3.6KHz) , the lower freq seems a little off. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 #5613 BFO low freq problem
I am building K2 #5613 and having a great time. I am doing Alignment and Test Part II. My problem is the following: BFO High Freq 4,916.98 KHz and it is greater than 4916.3 as it should be. BFO Low Freq 4,912.92 KHz, this is higher than what it should be (4,912.7). Although the range is OK (4.06Khz is the range I get, which is greater than the minimum 3.6KHz) , the lower freq seems a little off. As background, I calibrated the frequency (C22) quite accurately using my HP5342 counter slaved to a HP GPS 10Mhz reference. All other prior tests were just fine. What should I do about BFO Low Freq being higher than it should be? Suggestions welcome. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Announcement
Good Evening, The weather broke into Summer here in Oregon late last week. This Monday the temperature rose to 102 degrees Fahrenheit! It has moderated somewhat and daily highs have steadied to the mid-80s. Luckily our humidity is quite moderate here (~40%) so even the 102 degree temperature was not that bad. I had cracked the windows on my truck but the first few miles were fingertip driving only. The steering wheel was toasty. The Field Day hiatus was fun. I hope you all were comfortable and safe working through the pileups. I only fought off the hardiest of mosquitos since they don't have enough water to cycle through the egg to pupae to adult stages very easily. I keep water out for the deer, elk, Sam the cat, and the birds. However, I tip over each container when I see those nymphs wiggling around. I grew up in Wisconsin and donated gallons of blood to their many generations. I do not wish to repeat the cycle here! I managed to work a number of folks on both 20 and 40 meters last week and have been told the bands are holding nicely until the nighttime hours. Hopefully the solar stream we are experiencing will not cause too much noise and we'll be able to hear from coast to coast to coast. If you have the time, and the inclination, listen along or give us a holler. Please join us: Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4pm PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7pm PDT) 7045 kHz Until tomorrow, Kevin. I used Spectrogram a couple of days ago having read back to 1999 the Elecraft list archives about tuning L34. Mine behaves strangely. The noise decreases as it approaches the top and then increases at some point, having not reached the top. But screwing it in to lower it doesn't decrease the noise. I have to turn it in a couple of times until the noise is obvious, then unscrew it to the best low noise I've seen and just believe it's the best - it seems to be approachable only by unscrewing towards the top. I read in the archives that some K2s need a 150 pF capacitor in place of the current 180 pF. It's not a well defined alignment procedure, especially with the guru, Don Wilhelm saying, " just set the slug at 1 turn from the top and let it go at that" Ian, G4ICV, AB2GR, K2 #4962 -- ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Took the KX1 for a ride
My YL and I spent today <> at Ft McHenry National Park in Baltimore today. Took the KX1 with me and clamped the MP1 vertical to a picnic table bench. Could have done better but was slap damb under a tree! I had the 7amp hr and 11.1 volt LiPoly batteries with me and both of them worked good. The folding chair that I have is very comfortable and heavy duty with a tray on the right side. So I put the kX1 on the tray and away I went. Switched the the KX1 to "B" mode for the keying and liked it very much. There is a closer park here in town and still have been thinking of trying the 44ft inverted vee on a pole for getting out better with the KX1 Gotta decide on the pole though first! Been thinking of strapping the pole with a couple of bungee straps. On the MP1 antenna the 16ft counterpoise works good for 20 and it is terrible on 40 so I need to remedy that. The real wonderful thing about operating at Ft. McHenry is NO NOISE on the receiver. It is so quiet it makes you check to make sure you have a antenna connected!! Re: [Elecraft] K2 IF Alignment Question
I also found this procedure slightly confusing when I was going through it yesterday. The manual tells you to use a DMM to measure AC volts in the speaker out socket as an alternative to by ear assessment. I could measure the audio volts out ok but it did not tell me anything about the signal to noise ratio. I found that the 'birdie' on about 7000 is easier to detect if you have the tuning steps set to fine (0.1 or 0.01 khz) as otherwise you can tune right past it if the step is set to 1 khz. In the end I settled for just leaving the slug turned about 1 turn in, the birdie sounded quite loud and clear at that setting. Turning it further did seem to bring up the noise slightly. 73, Wyn VR2AX Are we speaking of the same L34? Mine "peaked" at nearly the top, not a turn or so from the top. As I remember I was peaking for the loudness of the noise; nary a signal around. de Joe, aa4nn ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I also get 75 to 100 emails daily with only one or two from people I know. There is a good saying that applies here: "Everyone makes mistakes. It's to your benefit to not make the same one twice." RE: [Elecraft] KX1 Transmitting Problem
Jason, Check the board carefully for any solder bridges or near solder bridges in the vicinity of J3, C33, R17, pin 24 of U1 and pin 5 of RP1. If you have a lot of flux residue at any of the above points, scrape it away and see if the problem is still present. Often bits of metal can become embedded and remain hidden in excess flux residue causing a solder bridge that is veery difficult to detect. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > So last weekend I posted an message asking for help with my KX1. > After taking the top off, I thought I found the problem so I corrected it. > It appears I did not fix the problem for long. RE: [Elecraft] K2 IF Alignment Question
The 'peak' on L34 is very broad and difficult to discern. It ideally should be adjusted for the best signal to noise ratio. If you use the 7000 KHz 'birdie' (no antenna connected), you can usually hear the signal peak especially if you listen for the noise to minimize. A Spectrogram display will also show it if you look for the maximum signal amplitude that is also consistent with minimum noise. Yes look first for the peak at the 1 to 1 1/2 turns from the top, but if you are unable to discern it, just set the slug at 1 turn from the top and let it go at that. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Are we speaking of the same L34? RE: [Elecraft] K2 Condensation?
John, You are evidently storing the K2 in an 'extreme' environment and it may be picking up condensation as you surmised in your subject line. Yes, in your case, I would think you may be wise to clean off the flux residue, but work with a Q-tip and work a small area at a time. On replacing the sockets - a definite maybe; but use only machined pin sockets if you do that. Try to get the tin-plated ones rather than the gold-plated ones because the firmware IC pins are tin and not gold-plated. In your salt-water environment, corrosion between the dissimilar metals can easily occur (yes, even with gold). You can find discussion about the corrosion at gold/tin junctions on the web if you look hard enough. The advantage of machined pin sockets is that they provide an air-tight connection and so minimize corrosion at the contact areas. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > K2 Colleagues, > My boat-board (alas, 36 feet does not make a ship) K2/100 with KAT100 > gives me info80 displays on chilly damp mornings. [Elecraft] K2 Condensation?
K2 Colleagues, My boat-board (alas, 36 feet does not make a ship) K2/100 with KAT100 gives me info80 displays on chilly damp mornings. It will step through the bands but it takes two taps to do it, one to change the band and then another to get rid of info80 and get the frequency display. I checked the archives but could find only a single note about this problem and the gist of the comments were that that problem might have been a construction anomaly. I have to assume that if this were an endemic problem, it would have showed up at field day or with the guys who camp out with these things. Has anyone else expereinced this problem? It's been suggested that I clean the interior of the radio-especially around the IC pins and look for any stray flux, etc. and then spray the entire interior with some sort of varnish made for this purpose. I really don't want to do this, but am worried that I will ultimately have to deal with corrosion problems if I don't do something. It has even been suggested that the problem is in the IC sockets and that I should replace them with gold-plated ones. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] CW Tuning Indicator Questions
I bought the board from Tom Hammond (N0SS). Tom also provides a parts list, assembly instructions, pictures, etc. as well as encouragement and advice. Check out his web site, it offers a wealth of info for HAMs in general and Elecrafters in particular. http://www.n0ss.net/index.html#cw_tun_ind On Sat, 1 Jul 2006 05:40:45 -0700 (PDT), Bernard Gaffney <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >I've seen several posts about CW tuning indicators. [Elecraft] CW Tuning Indicator Questions
I've seen several posts about CW tuning indicators. Is there a site where info on this is available (kits, pre-built units, etc)? Also, curious if they might be of use with a mode such as PSK31? Re: [Elecraft] K2 IF Alignment Question
Are we speaking of the same L34? Mine "peaked" at nearly the top, not a turn or so from the top. As I remember I was peaking for the loudness of the noise; nary a signal around. de Joe, aa4nn --- - Original Message - From: "Dan Barker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Saturday, July 01, 2006 6:49 AM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 IF Alignment Question You are not adjusting for the peak, you are adjusting for the maximum signal/noise. It does not occur at the peak signal. Unless you are using Spectrogram or some such, it is a trick to do by ear. That said, if your best S/N is at the top, I haven't a clue if you have a problem.
