Re: [Elecraft] RF probe diode question

2006-11-27 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy

Vic,

Having blown up my share of probe diodes, I find it useful to stick a label
on any such homemade probe noting its maximum safe peak working voltage
derived from the diode's PIV rating.

But while 1N34 is a small-signal diode, 1N91 is a power rectifier. That

matter.

I found a 1N45. That is pretty similar to a 1N34, so I'll use it. The
drop is about 0.28V.

Jim,
Congrats on taking on the K2! I'm just a couple of weeks ahead of you,
feverishly working on s/n 5853, the low power version.

Regarding the power supply-- I'm starting out with a Pyramid PS-4KX (13.8 V.
3A continous, 4A surge) that I have on hand. Since I also purchased the KBT2
internal battery option, I may look for a small Astron supply with an
adjustable voltage. I understand the internal battery requires at least 14V at
the K2 power plug input for proper charging.

Chuck and all,

With the internal battery, there is an alternative to powering the K2 with a
14.1 volt supply - make provisions to attach a 3 state charger directly to
the battery terminals. To see how that can be accomplished safely, check
out my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com

[Elecraft] Weller WTCPT tip life??

2006-11-27 Thread Darwin, Keith
Hi guys,

Work (ouch! I smashed my finger and it hurts to type letters like ki,)
.. working on the KPA100 and have noticed soldering is tougher than
it was on the K2. Heat transfer from the top to the part/board is hit
miss. When I clean and re-tin the tip of the iron I see it has a bit of
a golden hue and doesn't take solder well. Switching back to the larger
(OEM) tip things get better. I'm wondering if the tip or maybe the
sponge are just warn out and need to be replaced?

The Weller was new when I started the K2 and I used the small tip for
the K2. Since then I've built a few mini-modules but not much else.

How long do these tips last?

RE: [Elecraft] Weller WTCPT tip life??

2006-11-27 Thread Darwin, Keith
My technique is to remove the iron from the holder, wipe it on the damp
sponge (2 swipes, one on each side of the tip), bring it under my circle
light / magnifier and tin the tip. Delay from wiping to tinning is
about 5 seconds.

Maybe the oxidation isn't coming off when I clean it on the sponge?

When changing tips I've checked to see that the spring-loaded inner part
of the iron is able to move (it is). Both tips are #7 which should be
700 degree tips IIRC.

Keith:

The tips'll last until the iron plating comes off... probably another
decade (or three) in the future! And I'll bet it's not your sponge.

If your tip gets golden immediately, it means one of two things...
   1) the tip's too hot, or
   2) you're not applying the light coat of solder immediately(!)
  after you clean it.

Generally, the problem is #2, unless you're using a REALLY HOT temp tip.

A #6 or #7 tip should work decently well, BUT you do have to apply the
re-tinning solder immediately after you clean the tip or it'll start to
re-oxidize (that golden coloration) as soon as it's been cleaned.

For what it's worth, it do NOT clean the tip until I'm ready to START
another soldered connection... e.g. once I finish soldering a joint and
set the iron back in the holder, it do NOT clean it until I take it out
for the next round of soldered joints.

Yes, you can just pull the SSB board, and put in two jumpers (the ends of
the end jacks) and one capacitor (pins 5 and 7 of the big jack, C169 IIRC -
Check the schematic.

Rework-Eliminators. Here's where they are great. Get the module header
boards and build them up. Takes maybe a hour and you'll have a full set
of plug-in dummy boards to replace the options you've removed. Great
for trouble shooting.

My K2 shows strange things after power on during TX for the first dot or
two while the auto TX level circuitry figures out where it is and what
it has to do. After a couple of dits on the keyer (or bug) I'm in
business with the rig more-or-less producing what I'm asking for.

For many applications a scope is somewhat limited and a scope-adaptor for
 your
laptop / pc offers much more, for a lot less money, size, weight. These
 range
from simple to of course expensive. I could start the list of products with
Pico Scope, but there are now so many and they are very small, eg built into
 a 9
pin D plug. A cheap old laptop, better still palm top will suffice for your
workbench. And you can record the results for later examination.

This is a simplification, but modern scopes seem to be just specially adapted
 pcs.

Re: [Elecraft] Recomendations on Oscilloscopes

2006-11-27 Thread Neal Campbell K3NC

One great place to look is www.govliquidation.com.

Its an auction site for the liquidation of government assets. I
bought a 465B in great shape for 65 bucks. Its a little more involved
than e-Bay (but only a little). The involvement is that you have to
arrange for a pickup and shipment of whatever you buy. I think I paid
50 bucks to have someone go to the site, box it and send it via
fedex. Its not a big deal as there are lists of companies that do
this for every site selling goods, you just have to email and get the
best price on boxing and shipping.

I have bought a couple of things off the site and am very pleased
with it. Take a look!

Here is one site you might find of interest:
http://www.picotech.com/oscilloscope-specifications-us.html

They don't charge for software, you can download it straight from their site
whether or not you buy from them. There should be a demo version, but I
haven't looked. I will probably use something like this to monitor my house
temperatures when I start fiddling with floor heating.

Have a look on this site at a range of data loggers http://rswww.com then
loggers into the search box.

Some charge extra for software, but the loggers are cheap.

It used to be just parallel port connections, but that's mostly upgraded to
USB these days.

Have fun

[Elecraft] PL 259's

2006-11-27 Thread Dan Presley
Everyone has their favorite method, and here's mine from an old ARRL
handbook. Before you slip (or actually, screw on) the barrel to the
coax, trim the outer jacket and then tin the braid. This works best if
you have good quality coax as the braid is thicker:).Then, take a
pipe cutter to trim the tinned braid a short distance from the end of
the inner dielectric( about 1/16 is fine). Also, before you thread the
barrel on, it'll help the heat transfer if you file a bit of the
plating off around the holes where you'll solder the braid. By
tinning and filing, I can cut the heat/solder time down a fair
amount, and have a very good connection. Also, don't forget to tin the
center conductor before you thread on the barrel.Another trick for
weatherproofing is to fill the voids with vaseline, and then coax
seal.Mine have all withstood Oregon rain for many years this way .

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: Bed to Shack Table!

2006-11-27 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all!

Well, we had a new bed delivered on Saturday so I had to take the old
water-bed frame apart. As I started disassembly, it looked like I might
use the old frame. I've been working on the old frame for the past three
days and I now have a nice wrap-around bench. One leg is 7' x 2' and the
other leg is 8' x 2'. I did run out of wood so I had to actually buy
some plywood. Tomorrow I plan to install the L-table in my new shack.
It's a bedroom downstairs in our bi-level house. I still have to install
the white-laminated plywood over the top and on the sides and then put
some trim on it. The entire bench cost me less than $100 and I now have
30 sq. feet of bench top! I even used the side supports as nice shelves.

My granddaughters 3 5 year-olds don't like the idea of less play
space. But, I've been trying to get into that room for ten years now.
First the daughters stayed there then the mother-in-law. Now the
granddaughters use it for a play room.

Tomorrow --- it will become the new WA3WSJ SHACK!

[Elecraft] (Long) November RFTB Results

2006-11-27 Thread Larry Makoski W2LJ
The November RFTB has come and gone.  Only one more Sprint for 2006;
after which we will name the Top Hog of the Sty for the year. I trust
you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving; and that you're all finished with
your holiday gift buying and decorating! (Just joshing!)

The November RFTB saw the lowest turnout via the Autolog so far this
year, with only 31 folks sending in scores. That probably was due to
the fact that the ARRL Sweepstakes had finished about an hour or two
before we began. I'm sure there were a lot of Piggies who were to
pooped to pop into the RFTB. However, I did hear a few folks out there
making contacts; but who did not submit scores. If you participate; by
all means send in your score. This way we have a good idea who is
participating on a regular basis. Next month, the December RFTB winner
will receive a special holiday Piggie memento courtesy of Jeff K3OQ; so
I hope we see a really big showing!

The top three finishers for November were Larry W2LJ with 1080 points to
take First Place; followed by John N2UC in Second Place with 689
points. Perry WA8THK rounded out the top three by scoring 310 points
for Third Place. I was quite surprised and taken aback to find that I
was the top finisher. I am reminded of an old Swiss saying that one of
my bosses used to cite quite often, referring to strokes of luck. It is
appropriate for an RFTB and especially for me, I guess. Every now and
then, even the blind pig finds an acorn. I rarely get an acorn - ever!

Here's the tale of the tape:

W2LJ 1080 pts.
N2UC 0689 pts.
WA8THK 0310 pts.
K2NPN 0279 pts.
N9NE/M 0243 pts.
KA2KGP 0222 pts.

W9UQB 0003 pts.
K6BBQ 0002 pts.
WA3OFF pts.

K6DBG pts.
NØJRN pts.

I'd like to take this opportunity to especially thank those of you who
participate under less than ideal conditions. Folks like myself, who
are fortunate to have even very modest suburban backyards tend to forget
what a challenge it can be to participate while mobile, or with indoor
or compromise antennas due to CCRs and HOAs. Thank you for
participating month in and month out. You guys are the best and
exemplify the Amateur Spirit of being resourceful and innovative.

See you all next month!

Re: [Elecraft] 5A7

2006-11-27 Thread Lars Edwards
Hello Jacques

Using the K2 at 10W with a Gap Titan vertical I have been able to work 5A7A
on 40, 30, 20 15 meter CW so far. I can hear them on 80 CW but based on
past experience I don't hold out much hope of working him on 80 meters with
the Titan.

In general I've found the K2/Titan combination to be very effective and a
lot of fun for working DX on 40 meters and above on both CW and SSB from
this QTH (Alabama).

 Hello
5A7A is active from nearby Tripoli. I got him on 40m at 15:42 GMT with 10
w (phone) and my K2. Nothing extraordinary : he's just across the
Mediterranean for me ! Just an idea for those who have never worked 5A land.
The op spoke English, French and German...Good luck !

RE: [Elecraft] CW QSO's from around the house

2006-11-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

You may want to look into using a computer connection to the K2 and
controlling the K2 over a wireless LAN connection from your laptop computer.
I believe Ham Radio Deluxe provides for control of the K2 and Skype can
carry the audio. In fact, you can control your K2 from anywhere you have an
internet connection if you want to go that far. There are also schemes that
use VNC to control the computer that is connected to the K2 - UltraVNC is
available free from www.sourceforge.net.

Subject: [Elecraft] CW QSO's from around the house

I know someone out there has thought of a good solution for what
I would like to do. Want to use my K2 in the shack from anywhere
around the house and yard...say within 100 feet.

Listening to the receiver and sidetone is no problem with a
wireless headphone set. But, how to key the transmitter with
some type of wireless paddle. Has anyone done this and would
like to pass on your approach? Ideally, at the K2 end of the
wireless paddle the device would simply plug into the key jack.

 Thanks, John N0EVH
