[Elecraft] A K3 filter observation

2007-12-11 Thread Bill Tippett

K0PP:
Mine has 6, 2.8, 2.1, 1 and .4 kHz 8-pole roofing filters.

It's amazing that I can move from the widest to the narrowest
filter with a twirl of the Width control while tuned to a CW
signal ... using the NEAT CWT feature ... and not hear any
sign that I've (actually, the radio) has switched through five filters.

There is -NO- ringing. Impressive!

There is definitely a little ringing in the 50 Hz
DSP setting...as there should be. I haven't yet measured the
DSP BWs but I have a feeling Elecraft's WIDTH settings are
accurate at the low end, unlike Ten-Tec or Icom, who tend to
overstate DSP filter performance. I recall Orion's 100 Hz
is actually more like 150 Hz, and the 756 Pro family's 50 Hz
is more like 80 Hz. When you hear someone say I have no
ringing at 50 Hz, it probably means the filter BW is actually
NOT what the radio says it is. So far the K3 impresses me as
a radio designed by engineers...and not marketeers.

[Elecraft] K3 Powerpole connector issue!

2007-12-11 Thread VTuff59795
Guys,
I built SN # 104 up in about 4 hours to the 10 watt version (I have
not yet fitted the 100 watt PA), it went together so easily I was slightly
disappointed that it was not more involved!!! Joking aside the only (and I
mean
only) issue I have had was with the main board mounted powerpole connectors!

When unwrapped the main PCB looked fine but upon assembly I noticed a slight
misalignment (around 0.75 mm) of the Red (positive) PP connector, it was
shorter than the Black (negative) one! I nevertheless continued to build up the

rig until it was completed then I noticed when connecting the power lead for
initial testing that the mating up of the connectors was not very positive
(i.e. secure). Upon investigation I found that the internal metal connector
was
1.5 mm short from being fully home in the board mounted housing!!!

Yesterday I partially dismantled the rig and removed both board mounted
connectors and rebuilt them correctly. When reassembled everything was fine,
this
is the only issue I had with the kit but I must say that whoever fitted the
Powerpole connectors on my main PCB should have had their arse (ass) kicked!
The wire was poorly tinned and badly aligned, still... It made it more of a
kit for me and let me use the soldering iron a bit more than intended so no
harm done ;-)

[Elecraft] FILTER SETTINGS

2007-12-11 Thread Bill Tippett

W4TV:
However, the 250 Hz filter is actually 370 Hz at the - 6dB
points according to previous e-mail here.

With the K3, the point of diminishing returns for IMD (and
close in rejection) is perhaps - 30dB instead of -60dB or
more in a conventional crystal filter only radio.

If we use a straight line (linear slope) from the -6dB to
-60dB points the 200 and 250 Hz filters look like this:

  200 250
  -
   - 6dB 224 Hz370 Hz
   -60dB 896 Hz777 Hz
slope 6.22 Hz/dB3.77 Hz/dB (one side)

   -10dB 274 Hz400 Hz
   -20dB 398 Hz475 Hz
   -30dB 522 Hz550 Hz
   -40dB 647 Hz626 Hz
   -50dB 771 Hz702 Hz

By this simple calculation (or by plotting on graph paper) one
can see that the 200 Hz filter should do a BETTER job as the
most narrow filter. It remains tighter to about -35 dB
and the five pole design should result in less pulse stretching
(ringing in the presence of static) than the 250 (really 350 Hz)
filter.

Excellent post Joe (as usual). Another reason one
might want the 200 versus the 250 is the relative difference
between the 400 and 500 filters. From the published data:

Filter BW(-6dB) Shape Factor
 200 224 4.0
 250 370 2.1
 400 435 2.1
 500 565 3.1

Practically there is little BW difference in the 250 and
400 8-pole filters. If one wanted both a very narrow
and moderately narrow filter, I would choose the 500
and 200 5-pole filters. They have at least an octave
difference in total bandwidth...plus the group delay
issues you cited in your last paragraph above.

BTW I see very little insertion loss in either of
the 200 Hz or 500 Hz filters. Using an XG1 source, I find
1 dB compensation is all that is needed for both.

73, Bill W4ZV

P.S. I retract my engineers vs marketeers statement.
The marketeers won in naming the filters, especially
calling the 370 Hz filter above a 250 Hz! :-)

[Elecraft] Aptos / vendor soldering

2007-12-11 Thread Ken Kopp

Since the PowerPole soldering issue was raised .

I found the short black jumper wires soldered to the
two antenna connector SO-239's were poorly done.
Both had about 3/8 of exposed center conductor
soldered into the connectors and at an angle.

No matter though ... I replaced both with lovely BNC
SO-239 replacement kits from Oak Hills Research.
I use Pomona BNC patch cords for almost everything
here and so the change was a natural. I did rework
the male pin ends of the two wires and added shrink
tubing over the solder connections on both ends of the
wires

Maybe this is the first after market mod to a K3. (:-))

[Elecraft] K3 - UHF/BNC

2007-12-11 Thread Craig D. Smith
No matter though ... I replaced both with lovely BNC
SO-239 replacement kits from Oak Hills Research.

Well done, Ken! That is the one mod I was planning for my K3 when it
arrives in Feb. I was planning to make just one aluminum panel piece and
mount it to the S0-239 mounting holes and use two BNC bulkheads in it. I
was unaware that Oak Hills had pre-made fittings for this. Using two of
these is certainly an option if I don't want to do the cutting/drilling.
Thanks for the tip - it had been awhile since I looked at the Oak Hills
website.

By the way, everything here in the shack and test bench is also all BNC. I
never understood the attraction of UHF connectors. To me they seem large,
cumbersome and aggravating. Glad I don't know how much $ I have spent in
UHF/BNC adapters over the years ;)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Come on Simon...

2007-12-11 Thread TDY

Hi All,

Now, you do have to admit that Fred has something of a point here. Rarely
does a missing apostrophe leave the reader completely confused as to the
meaning. I tend to be somewhat fanatical about the english language myself,
but I do sympathize with his position.

I am somewhat anal about usage of the comma. My english teachers drummed
comma fault into my head to the point where I often get obsessive about
re-reading things to be sure I haven't committed the ultimate sin and left
out a comma. I'm sure it causes me to put commas into a sentence that need
not be there.

It doesn't surprise me that the brits have a society to preserve the
apostrophe. They claim full rights and privileges over the language, and
are often pretty critical of how we have bastardized the language here in
the colonies. Unfortunately, in many cases they are right. But, as I often
tell my brit friends, You are the masters of excess! Look at all those
vowels they insert which are completely unnecessary in my opinion. Labour
instead of Labor, honour instead of honor, etc. It's beyond me why
they don't take all those unnecessary vowels and, in the interest of
conservation and good will, donate them to some place like Poland where
vowels are sorely lacking! Another place in need is Wales.

Anyway, back to Fred's problem. I think a compromise is in order, and I
have a suggestion--one with which probably nobody will be happy. But here
it is anyway. If you truly feel that inserting an apostrophe midstream in a
word like don't is a pain in the neck, why not just wait until your
message is finished and tack on a bunch of apostrophes at the end. Then the
reader, if so inclined, can go back and insert them as necessary. After
all, if they know when one is missing, then they will know where to put
them! But, in fairness, if you opt to do it this way, you need to make sure
you put just the correct number of apostrophes at the end. After all, you
don't want to drive people nuts trying to find where to put some extra
apostrophe you might have tacked on (or do you)! It also helps to assure us
that you really did know better, and just didn't want to take the time to
insert them along the way. It sort of makes a game out of it. Actually,
it's already a game of sorts trying to interpret some of these emails with
all the missing or misspelled words, etc. But this gives the game a little
structure.

What do you think?

[Elecraft] Reed Prince

2007-12-11 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
It is Reed and Prince, not Reid and Prince...The Reed and Prince company has
been in business in Massachusetts for over 120 years...They started out making
nails...The cross-head Reed and Prince screw goes back to the 1930's and
preceded Phillips...

The Reed and Prince screw driver was designed for production work...Because of
the sharp point, one size fits all, making it unnecessary to change tips on the
production line...Many screw drivers sold today as Phillips are not really
Phillips because they have a sharp point, a characteristic of Reed and
Prince...Phillips drivers have a blunt point and it is necessary to change tips
to accommodate the size screw...If a Reed and Prince tip is used on a Phillips
screw, the pointed tip will bottom out in the shallow recess of the Phillips
screw, preventing the side flutes of the tip from fully engaging the cross
slots, possibly resulting in stripping out the cross slot...Examination of the
recess in the screw will tell if it is a Phillips or a Reed and Prince...The
Phillips will have a shallow, almost flat bottom, the Reed and Prince will be
deeper and have a pointed bottom...

I prefer Apex drivers because many different tips (straight slot, Phillips,
Allen, Torx, etc) are available...They use a 1/4 hex drive on the back of the
tips that plug into a socket in the driver handle...They are hard and brittle
and will chip if over-torqued, but they will not round over, which causes
slipping...

Retrieving (pick-up) tools are available on line from Stanley Supply and
Services, formerly Jensen Tools...

RE: [Elecraft] FILTER SETTINGS

2007-12-11 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Bill,

By this simple calculation (or by plotting on graph paper) one
can see that the 200 Hz filter should do a BETTER job as the
most narrow filter. It remains tighter to about -35 dB
and the five pole design should result in less pulse stretching
(ringing in the presence of static) than the 250 (really 350 Hz)

Excellent post Joe (as usual). Another reason one
might want the 200 versus the 250 is the relative difference
between the 400 and 500 filters. From the published data:

 Filter BW(-6dB) Shape Factor
   200 224 4.0
   250 370 2.1
   400 435 2.1
   500 565 3.1

Practically there is little BW difference in the 250 and

difference in total bandwidth...plus the group delay
issues you cited in your last paragraph above.

Expanding the 200/250 analysis to 200/250/400/500 as I did
privately for someone else:

   200 250 400 500
   -
- 6dB 224 370 435 565 Hz
-60dB 896 777 913 1751 Hz
 slope 6.22 3.774.4310.98 Hz/dB

-10dB 274 400 470 653 Hz
-20dB 398 475 559 873 Hz
-30dB 522 550 647 1092 Hz
-40dB 647 626 736 1312 Hz
-50dB 771 702 825 1531 Hz

I really think the 200/500 pair is the best value. The
only possible benefit of the 400 over the 500 would be
an improvement of 500 Hz spaced IMD. However, as you
have pointed out, with strong interfering signals at
500Hz and 1 KHz, the problem is far more likely to be
radiated phase noise and clicks from those signals than
receiver generated IMD.

I'm looking forward to information on the variable CW
filter, something like a 400 Hz to 1 KHz range would
be ideal in place of either the 400 or 500 Hz filter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - SWR Fold-back

2007-12-11 Thread AJSOENKE
I don't know if this will help, but I've had two experiences with my K3
regarding power reduction. While attempting to participate in the 160M contest,
I
connected to my 80M dipole and hit tune in the ATU active mode. I immediately
got a high SWR and retune cycle which reduced the SWR at the rig to ~ 10:1.
Checking the power output, which had been set at 106W, it was indicating 79W.
During a second subsequent tune (same ant and same settings ) the rig initiated
a tune cycle and immediately shut down. No overpower/high current indication.
I turned the rig on again, and everything was the same as before. I suspect
maybe the tune was marginal and that at that SWR the rig is between a 'continue
or shutdown' logic process. No residual effects were noted.

[Elecraft] FILTER SETTINGS

2007-12-11 Thread Bill Tippett

W4TV:
Expanding the 200/250 analysis to 200/250/400/500 as I did
privately for someone else:

   200 250 400 500
   -
- 6dB 224 370 435 565 Hz
-60dB 896 777 913 1751 Hz
 slope 6.22 3.774.4310.98 Hz/dB

-10dB 274 400 470 653 Hz
-20dB 398 475 559 873 Hz
-30dB 522 550 647 1092 Hz
-40dB 647 626 736 1312 Hz
-50dB 771 702 825 1531 Hz

I really think the 200/500 pair is the best value.

I agree.

The only possible benefit of the 400 over the 500 would be
an improvement of 500 Hz spaced IMD. However, as you
have pointed out, with strong interfering signals at
500Hz and 1 KHz, the problem is far more likely to be
radiated phase noise and clicks from those signals than
receiver generated IMD.

Even any IMD benefit becomes very marginal. When
dealing with interfering signals at each edge of the
filter, the practical difference is 1/2 the -30 dB
bandwidth...i.e. the 500 Hz will adequately reject a
signal at 1092/2 = 546 Hz versus the 400 at 873/2 = 436 Hz
or a difference of only ~100 Hz from the center
frequency...which could easily be taken care of in
extreme cases by using SHIFT.

Oops...inserted a wrong number in there...should be:

the 500 Hz will adequately reject a
signal at 1092/2 = 546 Hz versus the 400 at 647/2 = 323 Hz
or a difference of ~220 Hz from the center frequency,

most strong signals at 323 Hz spacing will have clicks

it's another K3 or Orion! :-)

2007-12-11 Thread Bob Cunnings
That's where the better shape factor hits home. For the 1 kHz filter,
with -30dB BW of 1400 Hz, we have adequate rejection at 1400/2 = 700
Hz, versus the 5-pole 500 Hz at 1092/2 = 546 Hz, a difference of only
154 from the center frequency. Not a bad single filter choice for for
CW ops like me who aren't serious contesters, and are interested in
using the context filter.

Better yet, instead of collecting S/N's in an attempt to
guesstimate what shipped last week, how about a weekly
 shipping status update?
Please Elecraft; enlighten those of us who are in the 1st
 batch and waiting.

It would be far better if Elecraft would divide the backlog
into groups of 10 to 25 radios (they don't need to tell anyone
how many in each group) and notify each customer into which
group their order falls. The each week, they can post which
group or groups are targeted for shipment in the next couple
of weeks. For example, the shipping status might say:
during the week of 17 Dec kits in group 14 and 15 and
assembled radios in group 13 are expected to ship. There will
be limited shipments during the weeks of 24 Dec and 31 Dec.
Normal shipping levels will resume the week of 6 Jan.

This would provide better visibility for the customer who is
waiting (im)patiently without releasing too much information.

[Elecraft] K2 s/n 6322 is assembled and working!

2007-12-11 Thread Sarah K.
Hi Everyone,

I just thought I should send a quick update and let everyone know that
my new K2, serial number 006322, is now up and running! The antenna
tuner, SSB adapter, and noise blanker are installed and working. The
power supply for the moment is a 12 volt, 7 amp-hour battery that I
connect with some alligator clips; not fancy, but seems to work just
fine. I also have the internal battery for the K2 on order which
should arrive today. The only thing I haven't put together yet is the
I/O module, which I don't plan to put together right away; I want to
learn how to use what I have first!

The antenna I'm using at the moment is very random wire; it's about
eighty feet of wire run a few inches from the ceiling, starting in the
work room (sewing room/computer room/electronics lab/etc) wandering
around the room, down the hall, and around the living room. It looks
terrible, in my opinion, but works ok for now. The two things that
seemed to help were having quite a lot of wire, and getting close to
the ceiling, which I suspect is not backed by chicken wire or some
other faraday-cage-style nuisance. I'll probably try to experiment
with some other antenna ideas but there just aren't all that many
possibilities for an external antenna in my current location; even
stealth antennas are kind of iffy due to various circumstances. My
random-ugly-wire seems to tune up pretty well, I think; it seems to
manage SWR's in the 1.something:1 range most of the time. I've heard
clear, strong signals on 80m, 40m, and 20m, so I'm pretty sure the
radio is working now!

I also discovered why I couldn't hear anything on 40m when I first
tried it out... the culprit turns out to be my gigabit ethernet switch
and/or it's accompanying wall wart! With that disconnected, I have a
perfectly nice radio, but when I plug in the switch, I have a very
expensive buzzing machine instead! Pretty much all the bands are
blanked out by the noise! Fortunately the gigabit switch isn't
critical at the moment so I've just left it unplugged, and I'll deal
with it later. There's still quite a lot of noise from the other
apartments in the complex, and a tiny bit from my other network
equipment, but nothing unmanageable.

I've also ordered the Buddistick vertical from Elecraft, along with
the tripod; my hope being that I can use that to easily operate in the
field, which, if nothing else, would get me out of the house a little
more! :-)

And speaking of operating in the field... it looks like I may get to
take a vacation starting next week, which is something, strangely
enough, that I've never really done! My last real vacation was 20+
years ago when I was still in school, so taking time off to go on an
adventure is a new thing for me, really! I'm thinking about just
getting in the car and heading North from San Diego, towards Northern
California, or maybe Oregon or Washington, but without any particular
set plan. I'm of course thinking of bringing my K2 with me, so if
anybody has any travel tips, K2 specific or otherwise, I'd welcome the
advice!

At the moment I still don't have a microphone or a code key (or code
skills), so I haven't actually been communicating with anyone yet...
I'm working on that! Right now there's still a lot to learn from just
listening!

It's quite a lot more exciting to hear a real HF radio signal than to
just read about it! Yesterday I heard people calling from Vancouver
Island to Monterrey, Mexico, and several other nearby states... it was
a lot of fun!

Thanks for your help, everyone!

William,

Check the soldering carefully, particularly on the Control Board. Also
check and re-check the placement of the components mounted on the back
of the Control Board (they are part of the power control circuits).

Check soldering, then re-check the soldering, and when that is finished,
check the soldering.

Good luck in finding it.

2007-12-11 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I can't make promises, but it has a very good chance of working well.
Keyspan has a pretty good reputation. I have one here that I'm going to
test with a couple of computers.

My experience has been that all USB adapters will work with some computers,
and no USB adapters will work with all computers. My experience with serial
ports is that they tend to be much more robust.

I'm continuing to make improvements in USB to Serial Adapter error recovery
which help with some marginal cases.

I'll send another note after I've done my testing with a Sony Vaio laptop I
have here as well as my desktop system.

[Elecraft] K2 and K3 speaker grill cloth

2007-12-11 Thread cloud runner
Instructions include a bunch of things to try to prevent the speaker grill
cloth from vibrating. Here is what I did...

* I sparingly coated the entire area of the inside of the metal cover where the
speaker cloth will be with rubber cement or contact cement. Wiped away excess,
especially in the area of the slats in the metal. I don't want excess to
appear on the outside of the radio.

* placed the speaker cloth on the contact cement, covering the speaker mounting
holes, and allowed cement to dry.

* With a small soldering iron, hot, poked out the screw holes by melting the
fabric with the hot tip

* mounted speaker. Cloth is not free to vibrate, but will serve its purpose of
protecting the speaker from debris and intrusion through the gaps in the metal.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Final Photos Added (Link)

2007-12-11 Thread Alan D. Wilcox

Brian,

Problem: Receive was intermittent, transmit was no output along with ERR
TxG.

Turned out that it was the chip resistor providing voltage to VCO
amplifier Q3 in the synthesizer. One end of the resistor hadn't reflowed
right (solder hadn't wicked up the end), and it was open circuit, even
though it looked OK. Even under strong magnification it wasn't obvious.
So the synthesizer usually wasn't putting out enough for the mixer. The
mixer would work sometimes, then sometimes not. One touch of the
soldering iron, and the VCO output was up over a volt, and the mixer was
happy.

Credit and thanks to Gary, and finally to Wayne, for helping me track
this one down. It was an interesting challenge!

Not definitively, unless you can find someone with the identical
computer and operating system to try it!

However, Keyspan has a very good reputation and chances are the answer
will be yes. It depends more on your computer than anything else.
There's been lots of work done on the K3 Utility to make it compatible
with all kinds of USB/Serial adapters, OS's, etc.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 f/w updates and Keyspan USB to serial port adapter

2007-12-11 Thread Dick Dievendorff
John, I just loaded my K3's firmware successfully with a Keyspan USA-19H USB
Serial Adapter. I used a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ150E laptop with Windows Vista. I
first installed device drivers from the Keyspan web site.

However the Keyspan USA-19H I have here has a 3' cable, and the fasteners on
the DB-9 connector are nuts, so it won't mate with the back of the K3,
which also has nuts. You'll need a M-F serial cable with screw connectors
on each end.

This fastener gender issue is pretty common with USB adapters; the only one
I've seen that mates correctly (has screws on the DB-9 end) is the KUSB sold
by Elecraft. There may be others, I just haven't seen them. For me a 6'
serial extension cord is not an issue at all, so it doesn't matter that much
to me. Your preferences may vary...

Hi John,

As Dick and Vic have said, there are no guarantees.
But your chances are very good that the Keyspan will
work fine for you. I'm using the USA-19H and I've had
no problems with it loading the firmware updates using
a Shuttle PC running Windows XP. I also use it on my

If you get a 'INTEL HEX Read ERROR' message after the K3 Utility gets

Delete DTBL0004.HEX from your local directory and then tell the K3

I suspect you'll be quite happy with your Keyspan, as long as you have a
serial m-f cable that you can use to fasten the connectors together. You
may have difficulty inserting the Keyspan DB-9 directly into the back of
the

K3 as both connectors have nuts.

You can decide later, of course, and order a KUSB if you feel you need it

* Noise reduction much improved, including insertion loss compensation.

Can you offer a little more information about the NR? In this version
of NR, the set levels are in four groups of four, whereas previous
versions have been 0 to 39 or 0 to 3. Additionally, I noticed that the
NR does not appear to work below BW of 500Hz. Is that true or am I just
not noticing the effect?

NR continues to evolve.

The latest version, as you noted, has four settings for each of four
groups. The lowest numbered setting in each group is the gentlest,
while the highest setting in each group offers more noise reduction but
slower response. If find for SSB use that I usually use the 2nd setting
[ NR F1-2 or NR F2-2 ]. The F4 group can have a sort of hollow sound
for voice under some conditions, but is excellent for narrow modes like CW.

Below a width of about 500 Hz, NR is disabled in the current release.
We have more code we are testing now that allows its use down to the
nominal 50 Hz wide filters in CW mode. If testing goes well, it will be
released in due time.

Even more exciting, we are also testing... oops, I'd better not say!

RE: [Elecraft] K3 KUSB option

2007-12-11 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KUSB is a USB to Serial Port adapter, a cable that has a USB connector
on the computer end and a 9-pin RS-232 connector on the K3 end. The KUSB is
similar to other USB to Serial Adapters on the market.

Some USB to Serial Adapters have nuts rather than screws on the DB-9
connector. The K3's RS-232 connector has jack nuts, and some USB to Serial
Adapters won't mate easily unless you remove the nuts from the adapter, and
that's not always easy.

The KUSB has screws that fasten to the K3's RS-232 connector. The KUSB is
6' long, and some USB to Serial adapters are a bit shorter.

I test with a variety of USB to Serial Adapters, including the KUSB, and I'm
using an extension serial cable that has screws on each end.

The K3 has a 9-pin RS-232 connector. It does not have a USB connector.

This is a stand up company and these are two stand

Re: [Elecraft] K3 f/w updates and Keyspan USB to serial port adapter

2007-12-11 Thread David Fleming
John,

The RS-232 connector on the K3 is -female- .. Your m/f
cable will work FB.

 Hi Dick,

 I have a serial m-f straight-through cable that has
 screws on both DB-9s.
However, I see from the picture of the K3 rear panel
 that the RS232
connector is male. I looked at my Keyspan USA 19HS
 adapter and found that
it is also male. So to make it work I would need a
 f-f serial cable.

I think that I should order a KUSB, which is exactly
 what I was trying to
 determine.

I appreciate yours and everyone's help with this.

I suspect you'll be quite happy with your Keyspan,
as long as you have a
serial m-f cable that you can use to fasten the
 connectors together. You
may have difficulty inserting the Keyspan DB-9
 directly into the back of
  the
K3 as both connectors have nuts.

You can decide later, of course, and order a KUSB
if you feel you need it
  at
the same time you order your next K3 option...

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Positions - Warranty

2007-12-11 Thread Craig Rairdin
That's a good protection against theft.

I have a friend who puts a sticker inside all his computer and radio
equipment that has his name, address, and phone and it says, I service all
my own equipment. If you've been asked to repair this item please call me
immediately.

We will warranty the K3 for its normal period, regardless of the owner. :-)

But we will need confirmation for the original purchaser that they have
sold the radio when we get a request from a new owner for warranty service.

Remember you're not really selling your position, you're selling your
 radio
after you get it. Again, Elecraft doesn't need to be involved.
When, and if, Elecraft states that they would honor the warranty for
radio x shipped to cutomer a, who sold it to customer b, then I'd
 believe it.

Fwd: [Elecraft] K2 s/n 6322 is assembled and working!

2007-12-11 Thread Sarah K.
Thanks!

I wouldn't say it's bolting-together vs. soldering; it's more a
question of how many of those darn toroids you have to wind!

At least I've overcome my childhood fear of inductors... :-)

 Great achievement, Sarah, congratulations.

I wonder how the bolting together of K3 modules compares with soldering
a K2 in the sense of achievement stakes?

 Enjoy!
