Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wish List
I agree... But when I asked for the ability to erase memories Wayne told me he didn't understand why I would want that ability when I could just over write the memory location with something else. But when he made it so a lot of people started taking a lot more liberties with memories and really liked that new feature. Personally I'm more for being able to NULL out CW memories but I suppose I can always just set them to only send E. Granted there are much higher priority things and so far I've been very pleased with Wayne's prioritizing so I'm content to just leave things in his hands. Although I do hope that now that the Sub RX is on its way to becoming an item that the DVR isn't too far off. :) ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Wed, 2008-07-09 at 07:34 +0100, David Pratt wrote: In a recent message, Roy Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote ... [Elecraft] W1 and QRN
I recently built the W1 Wattmeter/SWR Bridge to use in tuning my antenna. I've noticed that whenever I have it in-line between my K1 and the antenna, I hear a dramatic increase in receiver noise level. The S-meter on the K1 goes from 2 bars to 4 bars. This happens whether I have the W1 turned on or turned off, and happens on both 20 and 40 meters. The noise level is lower when the antenna is out of tune (it's a manual trap antenna that requires me to manually change a wander lead and change the length of a counterpoise when I switch bands). When I first switch bands, the noise is down at 2-3 bars. Once I tune up the antenna with the wander lead and counterpoise, the noise is back up to 4 bars. I believe (but can't measure) that the level of actual transmissions is higher with the W1 in the circuit than with the W1 not in the circuit. The noise itself sounds like broad atmospheric QRN -- it's nothing specific, just loud crackling as opposed to a hum or ignition noise or a specific tone. The only other thing I can say is that I have the W1 connected to the K1 by a 3' BNC to BNC cable. The cable is coiled to sit on my desk. I have tried stretching out the cable, but it has not reduced the noise. Similarly, I have tried moving the W1 to various locations on my desk and off the desk without any noticeable improvement. My antenna is not that far from power lines, telephone lines, and cable lines (about 10' at closest point, but positioned so that it can't fall on any of the lines), and the W1 is not that much further away from the antenna (the antenna is mounted to the house just outside the window of my shack). Any thoughts as to why the noise level would be dramatically louder with the W1 in the line? Could I have done something wrong in building the W1? It seems to be working correctly. Obviously, I can just take the W1 out of the antenna line to eliminate the noise, but I'm curious as to why I would be getting this effect. Thanks. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Scan Rate
The RATE button gives you a choice of scan rates but it would be nice if there was a wider range of scan speeds available. Depending on how much band you want to cover, how crowded it is and what you're scanning for, you might want anything from very slow to very fast, with a lot of variability in between. If you could adjust the scan rate interactively while scanning, that would be super. Also would be nice if the dwell time was user selectable (i.e., the amount of time a scan will pause on an active freq before resuming the scan). I don't think many people use the scanner on HF but I have found it very handy on the K2 looking for CW signals. [Elecraft] [K3] VOX issue
After my glowing report about the K3 VOX from the operator's perspective (mine!) a couple days ago, I started using it on the air, and immediately started getting complaints from stations I was working on 6m. The common thread boiled down to something like this: It sounds like you are using a linear with one of those old-fashioned big frame relays that goes ker-CLACK every time you start talking. Obviously there are no old-fashioned relays in the barefoot K3, so this is obviously an artifact of some kind. I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. Jon, I can't help you much other than the fact that mine does not do this. My setup is the same as yours. K1-- about 18 inches of cable --- W1 --- 18 inches of cable--- ant. tuner. I replaced the W1 with a coupler and no change. Try swapping out cables or a coupler as previously posted. I can't see any reason the the W1 would pick up white noise on or off. RE: [Elecraft] RIT range
Hi Bart: I can't answer your RIT control range question specifically because I don't use RIT, but I know how you can have receiver-only tuning across the whole band. That is, you can adjust your receive frequency anywhere you want in the band without affecting your transmitting frequency. Use SPLIT mode. With SPLIT enabled, simply tap A=B any time you're tuned to a frequency on which you want to transmit. For example, you can do that after tuning in a station calling CQ, or after finding a clear frequency where you want to transmit. Once you've tapped A=B, your transmit frequency is now moved to whatever frequency you are listening on. Now you can continue to use the big knob to tune around without affecting your transmit frequency at all. It will stay wherever it was when you tapped A=B, until you tap A=B again. I prefer using that method so I can do all my tuning with the big knob, I don't have to remember to turn RIT off later, and I can tune to any frequency I want within the band. I would rather just have it become the default setting without having to use PF1 but if I have to, I will do it that way. Re: [Elecraft] BL2 Balun Heating
Just passing along some information that might be of interest. I have the K3 with the auto tuner built in. My antenna is a Cobra Ultralite fed with ladder line. I can switch between a Johnson Matchbox and a BL2 balun/KAT3 to feed the antenna. I previously had adjusted the feedline length so that the Matchbox would find a 1 to 1 match on all bands 80 through 10 including 30, 17, and 12 meters. I have received many good signal reports on all bands with either matching system. snip Happy 4th of July. 73, John W2XS I have the same antenna, the Cobra Ultralite with window line, and simply connect the two ends of the window line to an SGC-230 automatic tuner http://www.sgcworld.com/230ProductPage.html which is mounted outside. I have the tune power of the K3 set to 3 Watts. No balun required. Works great, 80 through 10. I am afraid that any changes of any steps of anything (from 50Hz to 25 or 10Hz) have to do something with changes of DSP granularity to 10Hz declared by Wayne as part of some leter f/w updates. Brett wrote: I agree that the 50Hz jumps do feel like much bigger schwacks in the lower bandwidths but I don't feel them un-reasonably so... How narrow do you wish things to get? 25Hz? 10Hz? 1Hz? Personally I don't know what the right value is but I do think that 1Hz increments would be too smooth. To the point of SLOW. Since 1Hz increments were your own idea, you just answered yourself - and of course you're absolutely right :-) The problem is that the SHIFT/LO and WIDTH/HI encoders are 36 steps (40?) with a soft detent that gives very little tactile feedback. With 50Hz shift increments and a 100Hz bandwidth, SHIFT covers the whole bandwidth in two small steps of the control. With a 50Hz bandwidth, one step takes you clear outside of the passband, so the SHIFT shift function doesn't work at all. Gary wrote: On CW, I find the 50hz increments to work well for varying the bandwidth but prefer a smaller (I am used to 10hz) increment for Shift. Tweaking the shift or PBT function often enhances readability for me, even with the narrow filters the K3 provides. 73, Gary W7TEA On reflection, I'd agree with Gary that 50Hz increments in width are OK, and the main improvement is needed in the shift. 10Hz increments are the smallest that can be displayed, and would certainly be a big improvement at very narrow bandwidths. However, at wider bandwidths a 10Hz shift increment would take too many turns of the control to cover the range. As a very simple compromise, 10Hz might be switched in automatically for bandwidths of 500Hz and below. Alternatively, this scheme would give smoother transitions: 10Hz increments (the smallest displayable) for all bandwidths 250Hz 20Hz increments (the next available step) for 250-1000Hz Keep 50Hz increments for bandwidths 1000Hz. -- 73 from Ian GM3SEK http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Answer for main RX only and for both RXs. You specify which filter to use for TX (one of the filters on the main RX/TX board) independently of which filters to use in RX mode. This applies whether you have a sub installed or not, and whether you're doing split or not. When you hit PTT, the TX path (on the main RX/TX board) takes over. When you release it, whatever RX-mode filters you had selected for each receiver is then in effect. I'm guessing the option to select filters for TX was added in a firmware update somewhere along the way... ~Iain ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. (Sync data mode, enabled by assigning PF1 or PF2 to CONFIG:SYNC DT, can be used to minimize the error rate of AMTOR, PACTOR, ARQ, and similar modes.) While -S is in effect, the receive crystal filter cannot be changed with XFIL, and SHIFT/LOCUT/HICUT are unavailable. WIDTH can still be changed, but it will affect only the DSP IF, not the crystal filter. The RX and TX first I.F.s will thus remain identical, a requirement for -S operation. --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Switching supplies and the K3
Hi Thomas, I'm not sure what your operating style is but if you are looking for 100w on CW and SSB then I recommend the Gamma Research HPS-1a. I have one and run my K3-100 with it all the time in a portable fashion. Here is a link to Fred's site: http://www.gammaresearch.net/ It has a very small footprint, weighs only 1.25 lbs and has no problem supplying my K3 @ 100w for CW. Fred recommends cutting back to 25 or 30 watts for continuous key down type ops. I've read others who state they run it at 40 watts for PSK ops without problems. Some reviewers commented on the fan and some excessive noise, but I've never been bothered by it at all. It is indeed not as quiet as the K3 fans, but certainly not loud IMO. I've heard no noise or hash on the K3 either. I made a short cable that plugs into the HPS-1a connector (supplied) to APP's to fit the K3. If you're looking for a linear replacement, this may not meet your needs. But for portable or just CW SSB ops it certainly has worked fine for me. Take care 73, Dave W8FGU -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:elecraft- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Thomas Kuehl Sent: Monday, July 07, 2008 5:24 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Switching supplies and the K3 Hi, I am back on the Elecraft list after being gone for quite a while. I have a K3/100 coming in the next month or 2, and now I am thinking about how it is best to power it. The K3 has a nice small footprint and that will be much welcomed in my small operating area. And, I don't want to dwarf the available space with a big linear power supply. Therefore, I am considering a switching power supply with its small size as well. Switching supplies have come a long way relative to the RF hash generation issue and I am considering going that route. I sure don't want to degrade the K3'3 outstanding performance with a noisy supply, so I am still cautious. The eHam reviews for switching supplies provides a lot of different opinions for the various products. One in particular, the Jetstream JTPS28, seems to get high marks from its users. Is anyone on the list using this particular supply to power the K3? If so, what are your impressions of its performance? Or should I skip the switching power supply idea altogether? [Elecraft] 80m QRN LP-PAN does it's thing
I just completed a cw qso on 80m. Static is running 10 - 20 db over S9 tonight. There is nearly 1000 miles between us and the other station was using a magnetic loop antenna for transmitting made from 18ft. of copper pipe, 3ft. above the ground. Using the K3 under these conditions was rough. I tried every filter and NR setting and kept having trouble with static pumping the agc and blipping out letters. AGC fast or slow made no difference. I then switched over to the LP-PAN which in addition to being a bandscope, functions as my second receiver. I was able to copy him perfectly with the LP-PAN, even with it's agc on slow, there is no pumping which seems rather strange to me. Maybe some adjustment to the agc-slp or agc-thr would help. I'll expand on this topic in an application note when I get a chance. 73, Wayne N6KR wayne burdick wrote: MCU 2.15 / DSP 1.84, 7-8-08 ... * SYNC DATA: Selecting sync data or “-S” now ensures that the same crystal filter will be used for both RX and TX -- either 2.7 or 2.8 kHz. It also has the 160 module as well. S/N 6194 KSB2 KPA100 KNB2 FDIMP K160RX K8ZOA Z1 IF buffer amp and Softrock IF receiver for K2. (These are assembled, the buffer amp is installed, but I have not yet tested them. No sound card that works well enough yet) I would like $1150 obo. Re: [Elecraft] k3 firmware update.
Iain, if there 's a K3 around I read webpages after a problem occurs hi! I received #1184 last week with 2.10, probably beta?? I have a problem with the notch, I can only toggle between OFF and MANUAL. The AUTO Notch is gone, so I 'll have to do some firmware upload. Updating firmware and software is not my favourite hobby 73 's Steef PA2A k2 #4654 K3 #1184 - Original Message - From: Iain MacDonnell - K6IAM [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PAUL VANOVEREN [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2008 3:14 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] k3 firmware update.
