Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Power Control and ALC Metering
This reminds me of the IC706 (I think) which has a spike leading edge which shuts down an Alpha (which has protection circuits) but not a Heathkit for instance. Or is it just the power control itself which is faulty? David G3UNA From: Kamal Sirageldin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2008/09/25 Thu AM 03:35:12 BST To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Power Control and ALC Metering Michael, I also see the exact same symptoms you describe below. This is after implementing Wayne's procedures 'to the letter.' Firmware V2.38, K3 S/N 775. 73, Kam N3KS Thanks for the detailed information. However, this is not my problem. The most severe problem I have is: a) the output power spikes and overshoots in CW or SSB or FM as you adjust the power control, so it is not advisable to use a sensitive, i.e solid state power amplifier with the K3. Especially not one needing less than 50W of drive. It needs a fast responding meter to see it. A work around is to set the power without the amplifier in circuit, speak or key to let the spike happen, then switch on the PA and not adjust power or mode afterwards. Does this not happen to anyone else? A lesser problem is: b) that the power output is unstable once set in SSB mode, showing variations of around 50-100% in the peak output depending on the power output setting. This is when set up as described. It is only really visible with a peak reading power meter. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 #5413 now K2/100
I was going to leave my K2 (#5413) as a QRP rig after I got my K3, but a few weeks ago I felt the need to melt some solder. So, I ordered the KPA100 to make it into a K2/100 that I can easily switch back to a plain K2 by removing the KPA100 and putting the original top with the KAT2 and KIO2 back on if I wanted to operate QRP. Just finished the assembly process and everything is working fine. Now I've got to figure out if my feeble brain can handle SO2R during a contest. I have enough trouble with just one radio, so I'm not at all sure I can handle the multi-tasking needed for using two at the same time. :-) 73, Ken K3IU K3 #202 K2/100 #5413 (my 12th) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Used in Montana Ham Rescue...
Fascinating story, and I'm particularly impressed with all that Mr. Ruby was able to do (with a broken leg) before even calling for help. This guy is really cool under fire! He lives only about 60 miles from where we are now finishing up our summer residency here on the Oregon coast. It would be neat to meet him personally sometime and hear all the nitty gritty details about his ordeal. I'm a little surprised though at how long it took for help to arrive. I suppose they might have been hard pressed to get to him before dark on the day of the accident, but armed with his GPS coordinates, etc., it seems like they could have gotten there earlier the next morning. Maybe a helicopter rescue was deemed unnecessary? I'd be worried about someone with that kind of injury going into shock. Anyway, this seems like good fodder for a K1 advertisement. It certainly emphasizes many of the reasons why I consider HF QRP gear to be a priority inclusion for backwoods outings like this. Cell phones and VHF/UHF gear would very likely be useless in such locations. This is the kind of thing you fantasize about--being able to put your ham radio skills to work to help someone, or yourself, in distress! Well, I do anyway, and I admit it! Hopefully Ruby will be given the opportunity to more fully detail this experience in one of our ham journals. Since this info appeared on the ARRL website, perhaps QST is already planning this. But if not, maybe our new editor for QRP Quarterly will see fit to take the lead? The use of battery power HF rigs for wilderness travel is a good idea. I had a TenTec PM2 ?? it was a 40 and 20 M rig and had all sides. Maybe some one can identify the real model number. I first used this rig when I was OX5BT. (1970-1972) I was there for 2 1/2 years. Later back in the states I got into wilderness canoe camping in the late 1970's and 80's. I led several two week trips in ME and one in northern Ontario. Having that rig with me gave me and the people with me great comfort. The QSOs that I made on these trips was part of the fun. 73, Ty, W1TF, K1 #1423, K3 #696 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It could have been a PM-1 also, which similarly covered 40 and 20. I have a PM-3A (original owner), which was the first of a very long series of Ten-Tec radios I have or still own. [Elecraft] K3 SN 1774 makes it's first contact
Well, strictly speaking, I made the contact USING the K3 and it was an interesting QSO at that. On 20 meter CW, using 50 watts to a G5RV pointing exactly the wrong way, I answered a CQ from JA1NUT. Shin came back and gave me a 559 (not bad from California at 2026Z) and immediately asked me if I was the same K6RM that he had QSO's with many times in the '90s. I had to tell him that Martin, the original holder of K6RM, was an SK since around 2005 and we then briefly chatted about times gone by until band conditions deteriorated. Now that I've christened the radio I'm studying/trying the great array of features. My only disappointment so far is probably the result of my own doing. There's a slight light leak around the buttons near the right side of the LCD and I'm thinking that when I was jockeying everything around to fit the FP board into the metal FP I probably knocked that little foam light blocker out of position. For now I'm trying to get used to it because I don't relish the idea of removing and reassembling the FP. All in all, I continue to be a VERY HAPPY Elecraft customer. Removing this connection greatly reduces the noise. If you use HRD, LP-BRIDGE, or any control software, you can also hear a pulsing noise related to polling the K3 over the serial port. I believe this can be lessened, but have not tried as yet. Here in Florida, USA, the level of thunder storms creates a naturally high noise level in the summer, but the effects described above are clearly noticeable. I use the Elecraft KUSB as serial interface. I suspect that either the computer or the K3 are dumping RF trash onto your serial cable, which, like any antenna, is radiating it, and your 75M antenna is picking it up. I suggest that you wind the serial cable around a toroid to form a common mode choke tuned to 75M. Fair-Rite #31 is the best material to use, and a 2.4-inch o.d., 1.4-inch i.d. toroid is a convenient size. Fair-Rite #43 will work, but you'll need more turns. This size is commonly called FT-240 in the ham world. See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf for tutorial information about how and why this works, as well as measured data for chokes with 1 - 14 turns around #31 and #43 toroids. Ferrite beads clamped onto the cable will NOT fix this problem on the HF bands. They WILL help on 2M. :) 73, Jim Brown K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Good idea Mike. Interesting about the clock. Did you install the cover over the clock battery before installing the KRX3 module? If so, did you make sure the cover didn't slide between the battery contact and the battery itself (Fig 38 pg 33)? If you forgot the cover, you may have a short from the + (outer rim) of the battery and the bottom of the KRX3 module. In that case you may need a new clock battery. [Elecraft] still have a problem.... still TX on power on
I found last week, with help from a few guys, that my problem was the controller on the control board that was defective. I received the one yesterday. plugged it and turn ON the K2. now I am able the enter menu... the K2 in RX finally. But when I added my SSB board, I found that the problem come again. only when the SSB board is inserted. I found that when U1 is there. pin 6 is short to ground... but when I remove U1, pin 6 is OK. Is it possible that U1 on the SSB board is defective too !?!?!?!? Re: [Elecraft] still have a problem.... still TX on power on
Jean-Francios, I am sorry to tell you that apparently your KSB2 U1 is likely to be damaged. Is it possible that there was nothing wrong with Control Board U6, but the entire problem was KSB2 U1? There is a possibility that both were bad - that happens, but rarely. 73, Don W3FPR Jean-François Ménard wrote: I found last week, with help from a few guys, that my problem was the controller on the control board that was defective. Re: [Elecraft] still have a problem.... still TX on power on
I think that U1 was also defective. because, even with the SSB board removed, the K2 was always in TX when powered on. I will order U1 sniff... 73 Le 08-09-25 à 21:29, Don Wilhelm a écrit : Jean-Francios, I am sorry to tell you that apparently your KSB2 U1 is likely to be damaged. [Elecraft] k3/KRX3 STEPPIR
Strange behavior on 80M split operation. K3/KRX3 interfaces with BiggIR vertical through LP-Bridge on 80. Running simplex on 3503 all is ok. Running split on 80: RX 3503; TX 3505, the BiggIR heads for the hills 35Mhz!!! Somehow the band data from VFO B is squirrely. As soon as I go back to TX on VFO A, all is ok again. [Elecraft] K3/KRX3 80M SPLIT
There may be a bug here. The key seems to be simplex or split. If I put both vfos on the same 80M freq and leave K3 in simplex, SteppIR tuning is perfect. If I select SPLIT and key K3, the SteppIR controller heads to 35Mhz even though both vfo's are on same freq. Fortunately, I have a band-aid. I use LP-Bridge output to communicate with controller. I simply turn LP-Bridge output off when operating split on 80 and then I don't care what the K3 is trying to tell the controller. I am running latest K3 firmware. I have not investigated this phenomenon on other bands as I only use the BiggIR on 80M Jim Denneny K7EG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3 makes it's first
My K3 just made its first breakfast for me! Earlier, prior to the last few upgrades, it would only make toast, but now a full plate besting McDonalds happiest meal !!! Other K3 firsts First self soldering of a PL 259 for me. First back massage for me, but a little too tuff. First time it actually drove my car by itself! (it is now in flight school) First time it oh, heck, just too many to list! RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 received
Ron, Interesting about the clock. Did you install the cover over the clock battery before installing the KRX3 module? Think a minute ... when installing the KRX3, the front panel is removed. Where is the battery? Of course the RTC will be reset - it is disconnected from the battery. 73, ... That is how I knew to do the calibration of the synth and that I needed to set up the filters. These took a while because I had to remember how to do each task, having last done it last March. Setting antennas comes later and is not a tick-off item. What would help most is a simple list without any descriptive text, just to get everyone started. There is currently no quick-start guide. On a related issue, I appear to have lost the date and time in doing the KRX3 installation. I am sure I set it OK before. Time was reset to midnight and the date was showing 00.00.00. RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 received
True, if the KRX3 is installed after the initial build, Joe. I didn't think of that.
