Re: [Elecraft] Average Cost of Used K2/100???
When I sold my K2/100 with the SSB board and the Yaesu knob one year ago, I think I got around $850 to $900. Mine was in pristine condition with all boxes / paperwork and included a custom felt embroidered dust cover. It was 2 yrs old, SN 4000-something. Value of used things can be tough to establish. My first stop is eBay. You can see what stuff sells for there. Then check the other classified sites (eham, qth) and see what folks are listing there, but remember that asking price may not reflect actual value. If the item is still being sold new, then you can often apply a percentage rule. I figure a range of 60% to about 80% of new cost depending on the condition age. With a K2, you have the kit factor that further muddies the water. Is an assembled K2 worth more or less than the kit? [Elecraft] K3: Firmware 3.03 introducing artifacts?
Hello group, I upgraded to 3.03 the other night, and immediately noticed several fast-tuning birdies in places where I'm 95% sure were not there prior to the update. Switching antenna jacks or removing the antennas all together makes no difference. These birdies are only noticeable on the main receiver and are not present on the sub. Also, while the birdie removal function works, it doesn't seem to do it as described in the release notes. For example, the release notes state that the tool moves the artifact out of the passband within 100 Hz segment. But, I've noticed that if I have a two-tone birdie occurring at 28.135.30 and the other at 28.135.35, using the tool to remove the signal at 28.135.30 doesn't remove the tone at 28.135.35. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Average Cost of Used K2/100???
I am a new Elecraft owner and didn't know much about them when I purchased my K2/100 s/n 0473. I found out the hard way that the deal I thought I was getting was soon squashed once I did most of the upgrades to bring it up to date.(Firmware and Hardware) Still have more to go! Buyer beware. That being said, I ended up paying a decent price and had a great learning experience doing the upgrades, and integrating the KAP100 into a newly built (by me) KAT100, as well as well as building and installing a couple more options. My point make sure you know whats inside the rig you are interested in buying, it will be a major factor on the price you pay. Unless the rig you are considering is up to date and fully loaded, I would recommend getting very familiar with the Elecraft website and all of the options and upgrades available along with the costs of each. If you are working on a budget, don't forget to factor in shipping and builder fees. If you are doing it yourself and have never built before, you may have to factor in the basic tools needed to build the kits you plan on adding to your used rig. In my case, solder, magnifier, cutters, grounding strap, Pana-vice, and soldering station. This stuff adds up fast! Once you have all of this information you should know what you would be willing to pay for a used K2/100. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 - very quiet on 30m and 20m
Don, thanks for that information. Here's what I have. TX appears fine. With 12.3V supply I get the following output: 80m 3.3W; 40m 2.9W, 30m 3.8W, 20m 3W. All measured by an Oakhills Labs QRP meter and a 50 Ohm dummy load. The RX seems to have a problem. I have done a careful check of all trimmer settings. Measuring across the volume control (all controls fully clockwise); XG2 set to 50 microvolts (battery checked!); Fluke 175 true RMS meter (by a lucky coincidence): 40m: 163mV with earbuds connected; 185mV without 20m: 140mV with earbuds connected; 158mV without Leaving the earbuds in, I then tried injecting the XG2 directly on the junction of L6 and the top of the RF gain pot. The difference in audio level is dramatic, particularly on 20m, but I still don't get anywhere near your figures: 40M: normal antenna input 163mV; direct to top of RF gain pot 275mV 20m: normal antenna input 140mV; direct to top of RF gain pot 550mV - getting closer! Other checks I've done: - Made sure that the break in the PCB and subsequent link is OK for the addition of the KXB3080 - Checked L6 for continuity - Checked connections to KXB3080 - and ensured that A B are as shown in the manual i.e. B goes nearest to T1. - Checked all voltages on U6 - within spec - Checked connections of T2 and re-soldered joints (this was supplied by the Mychael) - Checked L3 is the later version with the right number of turns This feels like it may be a problem with the pin diode switches, but that still doesn't really explain why I can't get anywhere near your 0.8V figures across the audio pot. 73 Bob G3YIQ On 18 Mar 2009, at 23:39, Don Wilhelm wrote: Bob, OK, I finished the KX1 up to the point where I am able to give you some numbers. If I plug in headphones (Sony MDR series), the voltage drops to 0.836 volts. Of course, the AGC should be active which will keep the voltage down a bit. The KX1 has the KXB3080 option installed, and the receiver front end is a little more sensitive than either the original KX1 or with the KXB30 installed. With a 1 uV input, I read 38 to 40 mV at the same point - AGC should not be as active at that level. The voltage readings were obtained with a Fluke True RMS reading DMM. 73, Don W3FPR Don Wilhelm wrote: Bob, I can't give you a measurement number right away, I do not have a working KX1 here at the moment, but that value may be possible tomorrow or Friday. If you do not hear quite a loud signal with the 50 uV output from the XG2 (or XG1 with a 20 meter crystal) - with the RF Gain at full clockwise and the AF Gain between 25 and 35% of rotation, then there is something wrong. How is the transmit power output? If that is OK, then the low pass filter is likely OK, and you might want to look at T2. The KX1 audio is not super strong, and having good volume does depend on using sensitive headphones. If your headphones do not have an sensitivity rating greater than 108 dB/mW, then your headphones may be the major problem, see the KX1 manual page 62. 73, Don W3FPR Bob Jones wrote: I've just completed a KX1 build with the 80/30m option and auto atu. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware 3.03 introducing artifacts?
Hi James, I upgraded to 3.03 the other night, and immediately noticed several fast-tuning birdies in places where I'm 95% sure were not there prior to the update. Fast-tuning birdies are a function of coax cable locations and synthesizer frequencies. Firmware changes should have no impact on them. If you're sure the new ones weren't there before, try writing them down and reloading an older version to make sure. In many cases you'll need to remove the birdie from two or three adjacent 100-Hz segments. This is more likely with wide bandwidths than narrow. Just use the same procedure on each one. Test it by sweeping the VFO across the entire area after all audible birdies are mapped out. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I have read on this forum that the startup as shutdown settings are not saved unless you power down with the POWER button. The K3 reverts to previous settings if shut down by powering down with the power supply. I have not experimented with this, but could this be the problem? Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware 3.03 introducing artifacts?
James, These fast tuning birdies depend on the mode selected, the roofing filter selected, and the position of the shift control. If any of these was changed between the last time you looked and this time, that could account for a change between the two versions. The birdie removal is not as simple as just finding the birdie and turning the knob. If you are tuning at the fast VFO rate (50 Hz per step), you may not be getting quite enough information to see and control what is happening. If you change the rate to 10 Hz per step with the Rate button, it is easier to see what is happening and easier to get the birdie removal working right. Here is an example. With the filter bandwidth set to 2.8 kHz, as you step through frequencies at 10 Hz steps you might hear birdies with the following pitches: 28135.30 - nothing heard. 28135.27 - 2700 Hz. 28135.28 - 2400 Hz. 28135.29 - 2100 Hz. 28135.30 - 1800 Hz. 28135.31 - 1500 Hz. 28135.32 - 1200 Hz. 28135.33 - 900 Hz. 28135.34 - 600 Hz. 28135.35 - 300 Hz. 28135.36 - nothing heard. At the 50 Hz tuning rate, you would only hear this birdie at two spots: 28135.30 - 1800 Hz. 28135.35 - 300 Hz. I assume that's what you meant by a two-tone birdie. OK, with the dial tuned to 28135.30, use the SIG RMV feature. Depending on whether you turn the VFO A knob to the left or to the right, the birdies might be moved either up or down in pitch. Let's suppose you turned the knob in the direction that moves the birdie up in pitch, and that the shift is 1500 Hz (BTW, I have no idea whether that's the right amount, this is just a made-up example). Raising the pitch by 1500 Hz would remove the birdie at 28135.30 all right (it would now be at 3300 Hz, outside your bandpass), but it would change the birdie at 28135.35 to 1800 Hz, which does not remove it. This is the wrong direction to apply the correction for this particular birdie. If you tune at 10 Hz steps, this correction will produce new birdies at 28135.36-28135.39 that weren't even audible before. If you turn the knob in the opposite direction, though, the pitch of the birdie at 28135.30 will be lowered to 300 Hz, and there will be no birdie audible at 28135.31 or higher frequencies. This is almost, but not quite, good enough; so, turn the knob one more step in the same direction and that will eliminate the birdie from the entire range 28135.30 - 28135.39 . Now tune down one 10 Hz step to 28135.29. The birdie is still there at 2100 Hz - the previous adjustment did not affect it. Turning the knob to lower the pitch, like you did in the previous step, will not work - it will make this birdie worse. You need to turn the knob in the opposite direction, to raise the pitch. A one-step rotation will eliminate this birdie from the entire range 28135.20 - 28135.29 . So for this particular birdie, you had to apply two steps in one direction in one 100 Hz segment, and one step in the opposite direction in the adjacent 100 Hz step. Now suppose the birdie goes in the opposite direction, e.g.: 28135.27 - 300 Hz. 28135.28 - 600 Hz. 28135.29 - 900 Hz. 28135.30 - 1200 Hz. 28135.31 - 1500 Hz. 28135.32 - 1800 Hz. 28135.33 - 2100 Hz. 28135.34 - 2400 Hz. 28135.35 - 2700 Hz. In this case, you will need to use the opposite directions for correction compared to the previous case. You will have to raise the pitch of the birdies in 28135.30-39 by 2 steps, and you will have to lower the pitch of the birdies in 28135.20-29 by one step. I hope this helps you understand the birdie removal process better. 73, Rich VE3KI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 AGC changes not working on main receiver, 3.03, 2.10
I have the new firmware 3.03 with DSP 2.10 I am trying to adjust AGC parameters while in diversity receive mode, CW AGC-F. When I adjust AGC THR the sub receiver (left speaker in my set up) obviously changes loudness (8 is maximum background noise, 2 is minimum), the main receiver has no change and the background noise is about equal when I set AGC THR at 2. AGC SLP shows the same problem, max background noise at SLP = 000, minimum with SLP = 15. Main Rx indicates no change. With sub receiver off AGC parameter changes have no effect on Rx. Hey Frank, I would dearly love to see the BCD-decoderBCD-decoder method.( if its convenient) I have often thought of that. If I remember the BCD has a total word value of 15 (decimal) ...right? Thanks, Duane Hi Duane, I do happen to use Cecil Moore's ladder network and switch it from inside the shack. I didn't program a PIC but used a third-party BCD-to-band decoder to decode the K3 band data that's available on the AUX connector, followed by some diode logic driving the 1' to 16' relays outside. Works like a charm! I use this ladder network for a couple of months now. Just bagged my first VK on 80m Tuesday night, on my low (10m high) 2x24m doublet at first try, so I'm not complaining. If there's serious interest in it, I can draw up some info on what I did and make it available publicly. 73, Frank PA4N -- bw...@fastmail.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Bose noise canceling headphones
I bought some noise cancelling Sennheisers in Changi Airport a couple of years ago, they were not as expensive as the Bose, but not far off. They did a fantastic job of cancelling the sorts of frequencies which are troublesome in a jet; I found that I could turn my iPod right down and still hear it. However, in a domestic situation I find that although they do reduce extraneous noise, they don't do a wonderful job of it and the background hiss caused by the amplifier I find unsettling. Such hiss would not have been audible in a noisy environment such as a jet. Now it might be that the Bose are very very much better, but it might be worth trying to find out before lashing out $$$'s! Hope that helps 73 Stephen G4SJP On 19/03/2009 19:49, dw bw...@fastmail.fm wrote: Ah! I've always wondered how well Bose noise cancelling phones worked. I've been using a pair of Direct Sound's Extreme Isolation headphones for years. They are very good for blocking out noisy environments. They are not noise canceling, but rather use passive techniques (tight fit, sound absorbing material) to reduce ambient noise by 29dB (or so they claim). Re: [Elecraft] Bose noise canceling headphones
If you **truly** want to block out ambient noise, there are much better and less expensive solutions. If I recall correctly the $300 (fair traded) Bose QC2 units only have ~10 dB of attenuation. Bose doe not spec their sound reduction because it really isn't so great. I think I found the 10 dB figure above from a 3rd party evaluation of the original Bose QC. I've used the Etymotic ER-6 which is an in-ear solution with claimed average noise reduction of 34-36 dB for ~$85 at amazon.com. http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er6.aspx The only problem with the ER-6 is it may be uncomfortable for some people. I've worn them in contests and had no problems for extended periods (i.e. 14-15 hours per sitting). My personal favorite now is the Extreme Isolation EX-29. These are over-the-ear headphones that have 29 dB average rejection and can be found for ~$90. http://www.extremeheadphones.com/ex-29.html I had Prof. Amar Bose for my introductory circuit theory class in 1963. He was a great teacher, but IMHO there are much better noise-reduction solutions available for much less money. 73, Bill P.S. I also once borrowed a David Clark aviation headset from a pilot friend. Agreed on all counts. I work in pro audio, and have long used the more expensive Etymotic ER4 in-ear phones to mix live music. Their noise isolation is EXCELLENT if the earpiece matches your outer ear well, less satisfactory if it does not. That's very much a matter of every person's ears. These earphones, and competing models sold by Shure, are made primarily for musicians working on stage. I own two pairs of ER4s and three pairs of Shures (three different models). The ER4s and the higher priced Shures are all quite comfortable, and easy to wear for the duration of a contest as anything else I've tried. With all of these higher quality in-ear earphones, you can go to an audiologist and have ear molds made to fit your own ears. That's pretty much the ultimate both in comfort and in noise isolation. I also like and use Sony MDR7506 headphones. They are comfortable and sound great, but have far less isolation. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

One other comment in this thread re: RFI. I've not seen the Bose cans, but I operate fairly often at N6RO, where a lot of guys bring Heil noise-cancelling headsets. They DO have RFI problems, and Ken's antennas are mostly not very close to the shack (mostly 200 feet or more). K3LR loves the Bose headphones, and uses them extensively in his contesting super-station. I've driven past Tim's station (it's on the frontage road to one of the interstates at the OH/PA border), but I haven't toured it. Mike, If you can describe that more as a click rather than a birdie, I can offer a solution - run CAL PLL again - be certain the 4 MHz oscillator is set first and the bottom cover is in place. You also may want to re-flow the soldering on RF Board U4 before doing the CAL PLL. With the repetitive frequencies involved, it sounds like more of a PLL problem than a birdie. 73, Don W3FPR Mike-WE0H wrote: Anyone else notice a birdie when the display is tuned upward from xx.11 to xx.12mc???
