Re: [Elecraft] K3: Carry-on Pelican 1510

2009-12-27 Thread David Dunn
The weights and dimensions quoted by others should not be relied upon, they
change with different airlines and NOTE:- are separately applied by the
airport too, irrespective of airline. I speak from experience!
In some, only ONE piece of hand luggage allowed eg - Last year in
Birmingham UK. I took my K3 to Uk and back in a normal flight case, i.e
with pull out handle and wheels on it, The K3 an easy fit, wrapped simply in
a towel. (I bought the case for $3 from a charity shop)
Weight passed the 7 KG limit OK - after removing my camera from the case at
check in. I had had to put it in there at Airport Xray point, as 2 pieces
of luggage not allowed. Theres logic for you..!
So far I have found a Laptop computer is always an allowed extra, and they
never weigh them ---
I doubt there is another 100watt rig with built in ATU and all the
facilities the K3 Offers at anywhere near the size and mere 9 lb weight of
the K3

I used a shiny alumin[i]um flight case meant for transporting camera and
 electronics gear, from a
local shop. It is 18x13x6 externally. The pluck-out high density foam

Small light enough for hand baggage, and strong enough to risk being put

airline people at the gate ever insist it can't go on board.

Try your local electronics or camera shops. Much cheaper than a Pelican
 too.

I was surprised to have no problems with it at the airport security
scanners travelling from ZL to G
to 9L and back, though I did have my amateur license in my carry-on
backpack just in case they were
 curious.

Also suits the K2 (instead of, not as well as the K3!), leaving space for
 Palm paddle, antenna wire,
switchmode PSU etc. See my K2 suitcase set at:

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Digital Mode Settings

2009-12-27 Thread Julian, G4ILO

I agree with Don. It all depends. And the advice you read related to modes
like CW and SSB that are received by listening to them.

The thing with digital modes is that, unlike other modes, it is quite common
to receive using a bandwidth that lets many signals through simultaneously.
The decoding software doesn't care, since it is using a brick wall DSP
filter centered on the signal you are decoding.

The problem is AGC. If a strong signal appears in the passband then it will
cause the gain to be depressed and that could adversely affect the S/N ratio
of the signal you are trying to receive.

There are two ways round that. One is to turn AGC off, and regulate the gain
using the RF Gain control. This will prevent the signal level varying as
signals come and go within the passband. The other is to use narrow
filtering to exclude all but the wanted signal. That is the way to extract
the best possible copy from a weak signal, but it's more work and not
necessary for the majority of contacts.

Following the recent bomb attempt it has been reported on the BBC today that
only one item of hand luggage is now being permitted on flights to the USA.

To be honest with the ever increasing security I don't think I'd even try
taking a radio on a plane these days. The anxiety about will it or won't it
be allowed is a worry I don't need to add to the already stressful business
of flying.

It is only a matter of time before the only way people are allowed to fly is
without luggage at all and naked. There is already a machine at Manchester
airport that lets security guards see through your clothing. I think I'd
rather not fly than be subjected to that level of indignity.

[Elecraft] [K3] Utility Date and Time

2009-12-27 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

Just installed a shiny new revision D main DSP board.

Date and time needs resetting so decided to use the utility Date and
Time configuration option.

Selected Date and Time: Current UTC date/time and K3 date/time
displayed.

Selected Apply: Date updated but the K3 display oscillates at a few
per second between date/time and the normal frequency displays.

Exiting the utility Date and Time option results in normal display
and the time is correct.

All firmware (3r68) was reloaded after installing the new main DSP
which has installed on it the sub RX DSP and DVR.

In other respects all seems to be working OK, just soak testing
before parcelling up the old DSP board.

The open mic transmission on 20M I mentioned last night seemed to be
someone listening to a repeater in the US - N3FCK/R or similar.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

[Elecraft] K3 Carrying case

2009-12-27 Thread cx7tt
Jorge, et al;

I find the best case for carrying K2s, K3, etc is a pilot flight bag.
These are designed to carry the Jeppesen Approach plates, aircraft
operating manuals, etc and are totally accepted by the airlines/security
folks. They see them ALL the time. My bag's dimensions are 18L x 10W x
14H, excluding the handle. It has built in combination locks on each
toggle opener and built in telescoping handle. The bags are also known
as 'chart cases'. Dont get the soft sided cloth bags but rather the
vinyl with metal reinforcements. Leather bags are nice but expensive. I
also use the typical rollaboard suitcase with carrying hook...You see
these everywhere in the airports as both pilots and flight attendants
use them. Pilots hang the flight bag from the hook as they pull their
gear through the airports. The K2/K3 will also fit nicely in the
rollaboard but one must make sure that you will not be flying on a RJ
(regional jet), like Pluna as rollaboards will not fit under seats nor
in overhead compartments and will be 'gate checked'...the pilot bag,
however will fit under the seat in the RJsThe flight bag will easily
handle the K3 plus a small power supply such as a Samlex 1235M. A
computer style headset and key would also be no problem and I even get
my computer 'netbook' in there also...leaving the rollaboard for coax,
dipole, swim trunks, flip flops, etc, HI.
Hope this helps...all the best in 2010.

CX7TT
P.S. The Pelican cases are nice as are the aluminum sided cases but tend
to call attention to 'something valuable is inside'. Not good for
customs or potential thieves.
Try: www.snomads.com for examples of reasonably priced cases...or ebay...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 needs survey -- firmware and application

2009-12-27 Thread Luis V. Romero
Wayne and All:

Lots of material here that I agree with. My additions would be:

- NR settings recalled by mode.
When switching from CW to SSB, the NR settings from the last time the mode
were used are recalled when the NR is activated. Recall if the NR was on or
off from the last time the particular band or mode was used and restore the
settings when returning to that band or mode. This feature should be
selectable from a menu setting.

- Handles for Speech Processor attack and decay plus a ratio and
Transmit AGC/leveler threshold adjustment.
Current speech processor decay parameters sometimes too slow for my voice in
some conditions. I can sometimes punch holes in the audio when the
processor grabs a high syllable and holds on to it too long before
releasing. This varies with conditions... In contesting situations you can
overwhelm the processor when, for example, trying to grab a multiplier while
interlocked with a run station in a multi multi environment. A ratio
control, implemented with almost all pro audio processing gear, would
allow the compression ratio to be adjusted for speech speed up to an
including an infinite to one ratio, effectively making the compressor
into a limiter. Since the processor works on the IF modulation waveform,
we would then, effectively, have a RF Clipper, which would be better than
a compressor in my opinion. An AGC feature to smooth out levels in
modulation, increasing gain when one speaks softly, decreasing it when one
speaks loudly in conjunction with the existing TX Gate feature. We have
similar handles on the AGC for receive... I would like them on transmit as
well.

- Standard Pro-Audio convention equalizer segment frequencies for the
equalizer instead of the seemingly random ones currently implemented, as
suggested by W4TV in multiple posts in the past.

Older mice (the ones with mouse balls) used two rotary encoders

The P3 uses a single rotary encoder and a knob to position a

The same encoder is used for P3 menu selections.
A mouse is but one kind of pointing device. Currently the most

As I recall some of the discussions at the Santa Barbara Hamfest,
 a mouse
interface would greatly complicate the design of the P3. The
 standard
computer-to-mouse interface requires a software driver which is not
 trivial
to design and maintain (drivers are written in machine code for
 a specific
 processor architecture.)

IMO though, It should be possible to design a mouse-like remote
 to the P3
that emulates the knob and buttons.

Turning sub af full cw it is at 0% volume. So, the sub af control is only
changing the volume of the left side only.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3: Carry-on

2009-12-27 Thread ww2r2
On my 3 flights from heathrow to Dallas Jan thro Nov this year they have
been VERY strict on the one item of carry on, which includes purses,
computer bags etc rule. This has resulted on one occasion of my 2nd checked
bag containing only an empty laptop bag, which had customs at DFW examining
the case linings very carefully!

Bringing the K3 to England for christmas this year (in its padded bag inside
my computer backpack) I was amused when the TSA took it out of the bag,
after I told him it was a ham transceiver, picked it up with 2 hands and
said this is a much lighter radio than Hams usually try and take to the
caribbean

Sorry, senility attack. CONFIG: SUB BALANCE allows you too use the SUB af gain
control to
act as a balance control between the main and sub receivers, either in
diversity or normal
mode.

What it does *not* do (and would be nice) is to work as a stereo balance
control when the
sub receiver is turned off or not installed.

K3 using LP-Pan as panadapter, PowerSDR-IF software and a Lilliput 7
monitor on top of the K3. The Lilliput is a second monitor and the
usual logging stuff is on the main monitor. The Lilliput fixed
resolution is enough to get the important part of the PowerSDR-IF window.

Julian, G4ILO wrote:

I think we can forget flying to the USA for the time being. I am wondering
about going by boat for a nice change. I have been worrying what might
happen if someone tried to hide a bomb in their underwear, we already have
to remove our shoes - but this is besides the point.

I don't think it is a good idea to take a radio transmitter as hand luggage,
in the past yes but not now with the insecurity checks. You could easily
have fitted a bomb inside, you may use it to jam the aircraft communications
or even use its' sharp bits as a weapon. Obviously you would not do this but
someone might and that is enough.

Radio transmitters need to go in the hold or not go at all. Having seen how
bags were literally thrown from the hold on a recent Easyjet flight I was in
the plane next to in Toulouse, I would never put my K3 in the hold.

So that particular Pelican case is unable to protect the K3 in the hold and
so it would be a waste of money. If you must take the K3, use a larger
pelican case with plenty of bubble wrap. Remember it will probably be opened
by security so it needs to be easily repackable.

[Elecraft] On making the K3 decision

2009-12-27 Thread Phil Hystad
Just before Christmas, I slammed down the plastic on my Apple Mac Book Pro
laptop and ordered the K3. This was the denouement of a long process. I
started getting interested back when the order queue was very long, months and
months. I put it off until the line got smaller. Came back in November when I
noticed that the web site said they were shipping all orders upon receipt.

But, I was still hesitant. I was not sure if I was a true K3 kind of guy. The
K3 was definitely not an appliance rig (not my sort of appliance rig that is, I
currently operate an Icom 756 Pro III -- the appliance rig guy's appliance).
But, my interest in kit building and the idea of learning more of the
electronics that I once knew as a teenager, motivated me to pursue the K3. My
past kit experience (in order): Knight-Kit R100A (1960 or so), Eico 720
(1961), Heathkit VTVM, Homebrew dual-811 linear and power supply, Homebrew SSB
exciter (circa 1966), --40 year gap--, simple PCB audio oscillator (2008), FM
receiver (2008), Norcal 40A (2008/2009).

But, what really sold me on the K3 was this Elecraft Reflector and the people
who are here answering questions. I think that this reflector is one of the
best sales methods of Elecraft. The collection of K1/K2/K3 and whatever other
K-thing owners are most often friendly, ready to answer questions from this
beginner, and have a strong group technical depth.

From my perspective though, seven reasons why I picked the K3 over other rigs?

1. The advanced SDR features of the K3.
2. The K3 performance.
3. The K3 I/F port (I want to experiment and play with DSP algorithms and
other features so the ability of grabbing a real-time signal is nice to have).
4. The on-going refinement (new options), fixup, and update of the K3 by
Elecraft (I like the we are not yet done attitude).
5. The deep flexibility of the K3.
6. Wayne and Eric.
7. This Elecraft Reflector.

[Elecraft] K2 - Erratic SSB output on 160m

2009-12-27 Thread Robin Kiszka

Hi -

My K2 has a 160m option as well as the SSB Option. On all bands, 80 - 10m I
get good SSB transmission. Using a dummy load and watt meter I can see the
SSB transmission is stable and varies between dips of 4-5 watts up to peaks
of 13 watts (I'm not using the 100W PA).

This is not the case on 160m. On CW I get a sold 15W out on 160m, but when
using LSB I see the watt meter is hovering between 0-2 W, but when I whistle
into the microphone it goes all the way up to 15 W. The question is then why
is 160m so lacking in response to voice when compared with the other bands
that have far more sensitivity. I am using the delivered MH2 microphone.

I have disabled the antenna tuner, but this makes no difference. It's as if
the gain from the microphone is not getting through to the 160m option.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks and 73

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Erratic output on 160m

2009-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Robin,

There is no difference in the K2 SSB generation from one band to
another. That means it the K2 is capable of full power in CW mode, and
the K2 works fine on SSB on all other bands, it should work just fine in
SSB on 160 meters.
Is there any chance that your wattmeter is responding differently on 160
than it is on other bands?
A quick look at the RF output with an 'oscilloscope would tell you the
proper answer - just compare the waveform on 160 meters with that
obtained on 80 or 40 meters.

Robin Kiszka wrote:

2009-12-27 Thread Robin Kiszka

Hi Don,

I doubt there is any problem on the watt meter as it's working fine on other
radios for 160m.
Another reason I suspect it is a K2 issue is because the K2 bar graph LED
hardly lights on 160m SSB Tx, whereas on 80m and up I can easily get 4 or 5
bars with normal LSB speech on Tx. It's like the radio is deaf to the
microphone on 160m.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Erratic output on 160m

2009-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Robin,

It is possible for the K2 to have lower transmit RF gain on 160 meters,
but then since you can obtain full output by whistling into the
microphone the K2 RF cahin has adequate gain on 160 meters. The highest
gain through the K2 transmit stages is normally at 40 or 30 meters
although some show the highest gain somewhere between 80 meters and 40
meters. In any case, if you get any bars at all on the ALC indication
that is sufficient for full output. You might want to try increasing
the compression a little - I normally run the compression on my K2 at
3:1 - that will bring up ;;the average power for you.

Older mice (the ones with mouse balls) used two rotary encoders to
sense and count movement in two directions.
The P3 uses a single rotary encoder and a knob to position a vertical
 line on a horizontal scale.
The same encoder is used for P3 menu selections.
A mouse is but one kind of pointing device. Currently the most
 common of course.

As I recall some of the discussions at the Santa Barbara Hamfest, a
 mouse
interface would greatly complicate the design of the P3. The standard
computer-to-mouse interface requires a software driver which is not
 trivial
to design and maintain (drivers are written in machine code for a
 specific
 processor architecture.)

IMO though, It should be possible to design a mouse-like remote to
 the P3
that emulates the knob and buttons.

Yes, that prior response may be helpful, but all may not apply to your
case - each one is different.
To be specific for your problem, first monitor the voltage from RF Board
U5 pin 7 while in CAL FCTR mode. When tapping BAND+, the voltage should
go to about 4 volts and tapping BAND- should drop the voltage to near
 zero volts.
If that is OK, then move on to U6 pin 1 - tapping BAND+ should produce
about 8 volts and BAND- should produce nearly zero volts.

Check those conditions first. If those are all OK, then you can move on
to the varactor tests, but if there is a problem with the voltages
above, get back with me for additional tests and actions.

 here
 is
 my situation:

 1) I am at the Alignment and Test, Part II portion and trying to get
 through
the 4 MHz Oscillator Calibration section.
 2) When I take a freq. measurement at TP3 for the PLL with the
 frequency
probe, I get a reading of ~12650, obviously way too high.
 3) I inspected parts, soldering etc and cannot find a fault.
 4) Decided to do some signal tracing and performed a measurement of the
reference oscillator signal on pin 1 of U4. My reading is .51, instead
 of
 the expected 0.8-1.8. Vrms.

 So my question is this:

It seems that the 12650 measurement is so high that it may be an
 indicator
that the X1 crystal in the PLL oscillator is defective. However, with
 the
low reading on pin 1 of U4 I'm not so sure about the crystal. Could
 the
increased frequency reading at TP3, cause the voltage drain on the U4
 or
 am
I barking up the wrong tree?

I've looked through the email archives and haven't found anything quite
similar to my issue. I hate to start pulling stuff apart if the
 crystal
 is
the issue and would like to hear what others think of the problem.

[Elecraft] Help, please. K3 and PSK31

2009-12-27 Thread David Lankshear
I'm getting round to trying PSK31 and later maybe some other data modes.

I want to use either the stereo line out source or the headphones socket on the
back panel of the K3, which is getting mighty full of connections these days.

I could use some advice from the collective HI!

Should I use a stereo jack with tip active, sleeve ground and ring unconnected,
or should ring and tip be paralleled for use with line out?

Would I be best using the line out or headphone socket (with configuration
speakers+phones=yes)?

Also, if anyone has experience of using the Tigertronics Signalink USB with the
K3 I'd be very interested to have your comments.

Grateful thanks for any assistance and a very Happy New Year to all my readers
HI!

[Elecraft] Sub Receive

2009-12-27 Thread Richard Thorpe
I have my sub receiver connected to a receive only antenna through the BNC
connector on the K3 rear, the coax from the BNC goes to the second receiver
board. I assume this is the only way a signal can get to the sub receiver? a
signal cannot be routed via the ATU to the sub receive board? Thank you.

Not true, but it requires hardware reconfiguration. See the KRX3
manual, page 24:

Also see the section on antenna routing in the K3 manual.

[Elecraft] K3 needs survey

2009-12-27 Thread Ralph Parker
I didn't realize the list was time-limited, so here goes:

1. Option in CW mode to make USB the 'normal' mode (on the list already?).

2. Xcvr not to 'key' while testing (playing with) the keyer.

3. Ability to assign Audio EQ ON/OFF with PF1 or PF2.

4. More gain for SPKR amp relative to HDST amp (maybe this is hardware).

5. Of lesser importance - the ability to turn the SUB RX ON/OFF while
transmitting.

I'll start collecting ideas for next year :-)

[Elecraft] Filters for K3?

2009-12-27 Thread Martin Schmiedel
Elecrafters,
i am about to order filters for my K3 and would like to hear from the
group what filters i should go for.
I am a ragchewer as well as a contester, ssb cw. Rarely data modes.
I do weak signal work on 160/80 cw.
I have
2.8khz ssb in main sub
400hz cw in main sub
Should i order the 200hz 5-pole filter for their narrower bandwith or
the 250hz 8-pole with steeper skirts? Add 2.1khz or 1.8khz for ssb?
What is your recommendation?
Should i add filters for both rx's (- diversity) ?
If i go for the 5-pole filters, should they be matched by elecraft or is
there a method to tweak it in the K3 ?

Thanks

Martin

2009-12-27 Thread bviets

Don,
I also took the liberty to do the checks on: RP2 pin 2, and the cathodes on

Don't be too concerned about the 4 MHz oscillator calibration at this
point in your assembly process. Once you have completed your K2, you
can refine the calibration - see the K2 Dial Calibration article on my
website www.w3fpr.com for the rest of the story.

Yes, 12650 is higher than the high end of the range should be, but
please tell me what the low range is - while in CAL FCTR, tap BAND+ and
tell me what the frequency is, then tap BAND- and again tell me what
 the
displayed frequency is. Perhaps I can craft an answer to the possible
 trouble spots from that information.

Hello everyone. I purchased my K2 kit about 4 years ago and as life

More time for amateur radio would sure be nice, but I'm not near
 retirement
and for some reason I keep getting pesky bills in the mail. Anyway
 here
 is
 my situation:

 1) I am at the Alignment and Test, Part II portion and trying to get
 through
the 4 MHz Oscillator Calibration section.
 2) When I take a freq. measurement at TP3 for the PLL with the
 frequency
probe, I get a reading of ~12650, obviously way too high.
 3) I inspected parts, soldering etc and cannot find a fault.
 4) Decided to do some signal tracing and performed a measurement of
 the
reference oscillator signal on pin 1 of U4. My reading is .51,
 instead
 of
 the expected 0.8-1.8.

I've looked through the email archives and haven't found anything
 quite
similar to my issue. I hate to start pulling stuff apart if the
 crystal
 is
the issue and would like to hear what others think of the problem.

Re: [Elecraft] Help, please. K3 and PSK31

2009-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
David,

While your suggested cable from Line Out will work fine for PSK31, if
you have the SubRX, you will want to use a full stereo cable between
Line Out and the soundcard Line In - it may come in handy to have both
channels available in the future.
You can use the mono cable (as you described, with a stereo plug) for
the Line In to the K3 (soundcard Line Out).

The RS-232 cable can be used for PTT if the software application
supports the use of either DTR or RTS for PTT. Just set the K3 menu to
use the same signal that the application is providing.

Sorry, but I do not use the Signalink or any other interface with the K3
- I connect directly to the computer soundcard and the RS-232 cable does
the rest, I use HRD and DM780 for digital work. Perhaps others can help
you with the Signalink connections.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] PLL Reference Oscillator Question

2009-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Byron,

Fine on all that, so far so good - next is to check L31, X1, R21, D18,
C84 and C85 for good soldering, and make certain D16 and D17 are
oriented correctly.
If nothing is found awry, I would arbitrarily replace X1 as the first
step and after than D16 and D17. Remember that this is just like a VXO
circuit, no real 'magic', you add capacitance (that is what the
varactors should be doing at lower voltages) and the frequency shifts
downward.

Re: [Elecraft] Help, please. K3 and PSK31

2009-12-27 Thread Richard Ferch
Dave,

You should use the line out connector. The level on this output is not
affected by the AF gain controls, whereas the level on the headphone
output depends on the AF gain controls and also on whether or not you
have headphones plugged into the front panel (since the two are in
parallel). The line out level is adjusted from the CONFIG:LIN OUT menu
item (it's a set and forget adjustment). Using the headphone connector
also disables the speaker, whereas the line out connector does not.

A simple stereo cable should do fine. If you have a sub-receiver and it
is on, the right channel will carry output from the sub-RX; the left
channel is always the main RX. Most sound card software defaults to the
left channel, but almost all software can be configured to use the right
channel instead, and either by running two instances of a program or
with software that supports dual channels, you can receive independently
on both receivers.

If your sound device only has a mono microphone input, you might want to
check whether the right channel is used to carry a DC voltage, and if it
is, you would leave the ring disconnected, but otherwise, a straight
stereo cable should work fine.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (12/27/2009)

2009-12-27 Thread Mark C. Killmon
Elecrafters,

My thanks to Steve, W0SZ, and Dave, W8OV for calling back east to assist me,
as well as other relays. Signals were not especially strong, and I have a
new, very slow, pulse noise source nearby. The K3's receiver was a real
help.

W6GS had the highest SN (3795) on the net today. Dean said he received the
rig Thursday, and that it still has new car smell. W8MYO had the lowest SN
(166).

We began at 18:00Z on 14.314, and closed the net at 19:01 with the following

Re: [Elecraft] Filters for K3?

2009-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Martin,

The DSP filters will handle most filtering needs for signals less than
S9+20 to S-9+30. However when the signals within the roofing filter
passband are greater than that level, the hardware AGC will be activated
and you will experience 'pumping' of the receiver gain even though you
are not hearing the signals within the roofing filter passband, but
outside the DSP filter passband.

So, consider the signal strength of signals that you are likely to
encounter during your periods of contesting and DXing, and that will
tell you which filters you will need. If you want insurance against
nearby strong signals, you may want a filter in the 250 Hz range as well
as one in the 400 Hz range for more casual CW operation. For SSB, go
for the 1.8 filter in addition to the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz filter if you will
be receiving in very crowded band conditions. I personally do h\not
think the 2.1 kHz filter offers much advantage over the 2.7 standard filter.

If you do not have the subRX installed, changing/adding filters is not a
big deal, so you may want to go with the minimum set until you get a
feel for what you actually need. With the subRX installed, you must
lift the subRX assembly to install filters in the main K3 board.

[Elecraft] securing K2 RF board

2009-12-27 Thread Conway Yee
I typically secure PC boards with a Panavise. With the K2 RF board, the
FIRST step is to place the standoffs and 2D spacer (which go to the
edge of the board! This makes the Panavise pretty much useless.

Other than leaving the board loose and elevating the board with spacers
as suggested by W3FPR and GM4ESD on February 28, 2005 what are my
options?

tnx.

BTW, I am having a blast building the K2. Kudos to N6KR and WA6HHQ.

[Elecraft] K2 Phase One Alignment Problem

2009-12-27 Thread alan latz
I need help with the 1st phase of alignment on a K2, s/n 6780. Everything
works perfectly with the exception of the Setting of the AGC Threshold
voltage on U2, pin 5.
I can only get a voltage of 3.62 volts with the R1 trimmer cap turned to
it's max ccw. The manual calls for 3.8 volts and I assume with the trimmer
set less than full ccw.
With a regulated power supply set at 12.51v, I get 12.33 going into 8v
regulator and 7.59 coming out.
Both oscillators are running as shown by Heatkit IM-2420 digital freq ctr.
X1 at 5.086 ant X2 at 3999.99.
U2 Pin voltage follows:1 @3.1, 2 @3.1, 3 @ 3.1, 4 @ 0.0, 5 @ 3.62, 5 @ 3.62,
6 @ 3.62, 7 @ 3.62 and 8 @ 7.59.

Perhaps this is not a problem. With all the K2's built, I wonder If I'm the
only one to encounter this problem.
I have examined all solder joints and redone any that were not good and
bright. I find no improper installed items. I checked the trimmer R1 and it
operates within it's range of 5.1K ohms.
I'm going to search for a return to factory default input in case I have
screwed up the controller with some wierd setting.

I have a Hayko 808 on order so I have no capability of desoldering any
componets at this point.

Thanks for any sugestions ahead of time.

[Elecraft] KBPF3 usefulness or effectiveness?

2009-12-27 Thread James Sarte
Hello Elecrafters,

When I assembled my K3 I installed the KBPF3 module in the sub receiver
figuring that I'd use the sub for SWL. However, I was thinking about moving
it back to the main receiver in order to take full advantage of the
synchronous AM detection feature. What I noticed though was that I can't
really seem to tell if the KBPF3 makes a difference when listening to
out-of-band stations.

For example, tuning around tonight I came across a strong SW station on 7505
KHz. Logic tells me that the sub receiver's AF output should be
significantly clearer, perhaps louder, than that of the main receiver.
Going back and forth between them doesn't seem to show any differences in
perceived audio quality though.

So, I'm curious now if there are any tests I can perform that would
demonstrate the effectiveness of the KBPF3 module.

Thank you for your valued input.

Re: [Elecraft] Filters for K3?

2009-12-27 Thread Richard Ferch
Martin,

As a general rule, before adding roofing filters I'd suggest that it
would be a good idea to first operate for a while with the DSP filtering
at the width of the proposed roofing filter to see whether you are
comfortable with that bandwidth. In the case of SSB, my understanding is
that you should narrow the bandwidth by reducing the HI cut and leaving
the LO cut unchanged, not by reducing the width and leaving the FC
unchanged.

If you are comfortable with a narrow bandwidth but find that nearby
strong signals are getting through your wider roofing filters and
causing IMD or gain pumping, then you should look for the narrowest
roofing filter that is the same as or wider than your preferred
operating DSP bandwidth. Remember that the purpose of the roofing
filters is not to set the filter bandwidth you listen with (the DSP
filters do that); it is to set the bandwidth outside which strong
signals will be rejected in order to give you the desired dynamic range.
If you don't need a lot of dynamic range at a particular signal
separation, then you don't need a roofing filter at that separation.

You should also consider how you use the sub-RX before deciding whether
to get two filters or only one for the main RX. In a pileup, you can use
either receiver to listen to the DX and the other one to listen to the
pileup (using the SPLIT button to control which VFO is used for
transmit), so if you have only one roofing filter at a particular
bandwidth you can decide which of the two frequencies needs it the most.
Of course, if you find yourself needing the close-separation dynamic
range at both frequencies, then you need both roofing filters.

If you already have the 400 Hz 9-pole filters, note that the 400 Hz
filter BW6 is 435 Hz and the 250 Hz BW6 is 370 Hz (look at the plots at
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3_8_pole_plots.htm). That's a rather small
difference, especially if you configure both roofing filters to switch
in at the next DSP bandwidth below the roofing filter's actual BW6. If
you really need narrower roofing filters because strong signals are
getting through inside the 400 Hz roofing filter bandpass but outside
the DSP filter bandpass, then I'd suggest you consider the 200 Hz filter
unless you never operate with bandwidths as low as 200 Hz.

The filter skirts probably do not matter, as the DSP filter skirts are
much steeper anyway.

If you need these roofing filters in both receivers, and if you will be
using bandwidths that narrow during diversity receive, then you should
probably purchase a pair of matched filters. There is no way for the
user to tweak this - you can pretend the offsets are the same in the
configuration, but if the hardware filter offsets are different enough,
that won't work, especially at 200 Hz bandwidth where even small
differences in the offset will make a large audible difference.

On the other hand, if you are operating with a 200 Hz DSP filter
bandwidth using a 200 Hz roofing filter in the main RX and a 400 Hz
roofing filter in the sub-RX, that might be OK for diversity receive. My
understanding, subject to correction as always, is that the offset
problem during diversity receive is most audible with two 5-pole filters
with slightly different offsets, rather than with one 5-pole and one
8-pole filter. Again, though, if you find yourself suffering from gain
pumping in the sub-RX because of very strong signals outside the DSP
filter but inside the sub-RX's roofing filter, that's when you will need
a narrower roofing filter in the sub-RX, and in that case you will want
to match its offset with the one in the main RX.

73,

but took a some time off from the problem to enjoy Christmas.

After carefully inspecting all the parts for bridges today, cleaning up a few
flux spots, etc., and taking some high resolution photos with a macro lens and
my D200 (ala QST) I thought I would have to go the RF probe route. I
re-installed the KNB1 and KAT1 to wait for tomorrow.

The football was so bad tonight, however, I decided to take another look and
then build the RF probe in the manual in preparation. As I took the K1 apart
again, I was placing the KAT1 back in it's bag (I like to keep the boards and
all their parts in the original marked bags when not in the K1 itself), I
noticed the jumper that I removed from the KFL1-4 when installing the KAT1 and
immediately slumped in my chair.

Sure enough, that was it. I had removed the KAT1 and moved the RF-DET jumper
to K1, but I had not replaced the J2 jumper between pins 2 and 10! This jumper
connects the antenna to the input of the low pass filters on the KFL1-4. When
listening for a signal, it really helps to have some RF from the antenna going
in to the receiver!

Once installed, the N-GEN and X2 signals (even the 1uV signal) are loud and
clear. Good thing, too, because I did something wrong with the probe and my
DMM is not reading!

Anyway, tomorrow I can thoroughly re-calibrate my K1; both RX and TX.

Thanks for the ideas,

have been made that have nothing to do with the complaint.

I think that you'll really enjoy the K1. The K1 doesn't get much

to be the best QRP rig for its size that's available. Were I in

signal. Switching in the Sub RX I get S9 from both Sub and
Main RX. Now if I move the sig gen to the auxillary RF input
and switch to RX antenna I get a barely perceptible signal
from the Sub RX. Any ideas?

Conway,

Just my way of working, I HATE things like the Panavise, it is more of
an encumbrance than a help IMHO.
However, you may elect to delay mounting the 2D connectors until you
need to mount the side panels - that will allow you to use your Panavise

With or without the 2D connectors, do not use the panavise until after
you have mounted the relays - use the procedure in the manual to hold
the relays in place with a book (or board or other hard surface) to
allow you to flip the board over with the relays in place prior to
soldering.

Re: [Elecraft] Help, please. K3 and PSK31

2009-12-27 Thread David Herring
Dave

I use the SignalLink USB with my K3 and it works like a charm. I use line in,
line out, and PTT from the SignalLink's RJ-45. On the K3, I use a mono jack
into line out, a stereo jack with the right channel disconnected into line
in, and a RCA jack to PTT.

I've used this with HRD and fldigi with no problems whatsoever.

I chose to use line out rather than the headphone socket because I wanted to
plug my headset in to the back of the rig, and I'm not one for swapping cables
on a regular basis.

I chose to use the SignalLink USB rather than plug directly into my computer's
sound card because my computer serves multiple purposes and I wanted to keep
the ham radio functionality separate from the onboard sound card. I also
postulated that it would give me more RF isolation...I had been having RF
problems with my computer, but in the end that wound up being due to the mouse
acting like a receiver. :-(

I was initially concerned that I had to crank the K3's line out volume up past
the 10 that is recommended in the K3 manual to get good response on the
waterfall display on HRD or fldigi. I puzzled over that one for a while but
finally got the idea to turn the K3's AGC off and whoa! ... no longer had that
problem! (and also had to peel my eardrums off the wall, hi hi). I get ample
line out levels and thus plenty of waterfall with line out set to 10 when the
AGC is off. I tend to use shift and width to narrow in on the signal I wish to
receive, and AGC doesn't seem necessary but your mileage may vary.

In all, I'm very happy with the SignalLink USB, and of course, the K3.

Should I use a stereo jack with tip active, sleeve ground and ring

Would I be best using the line out or headphone socket (with configuration

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Phase One Alignment Problem

2009-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
Alan,

You are not the only one.

The 8 volt regulator is on the low side of its spec. That will cause no
problem other than you will not be able to adjust the AGC Threshold to
3.8 volts. The 3.8 volt point is only valid if the 8 volt regulator is
really 8 volts. When the 8 volt supply is lower than 8 volts, the AGC
Threshold can (and should) be a bit lower than 3.8 volts. Just set the
AGC Threshold pot for maximum and all will be well.

If you find later that you need to increase the AGC Threshold voltage
(that is not likely), you can add a resistor in parallel with the
resistor in RP6 between pins 3 and 4 to bring the AGC Threshold voltage
a bit higher - a 10k resistor will usually suffice.

With a regulated power supply set at 12.51v, I get 12.33 going into 8v

Both oscillators are running as shown by Heatkit IM-2420 digital freq ctr.
 X1 at 5.086 ant X2 at 3999.99.
 U2 Pin voltage follows:1 @3.1, 2 @3.1, 3 @ 3.1, 4 @ 0.0, 5 @ 3.62, 5 @ 3.62,
 6 @ 3.62, 7 @ 3.62 and 8 @ 7.59.

Perhaps this is not a problem. With all the K2's built, I wonder If I'm the
only one to encounter this problem.

Does the advice on dialing back the RF gain, as tendered on this reflector,
apply to when one is running digital? For example, I've recently started
playing with Olivia since it is noted for weak signal robustness. Would I
run the rig with the RF gain wide open, or would I still dial it back to the
point where the S meter just stops flickering? My first instinct is to run
with the RF gain more open than that since Olivia communications succeed at
signal levels below the noise floor, but I wanted to do something of a sanity
check amongst other K3 users to see if I'm thinking about this right or not.

I have benefited greatly by reading this reflector and appreciate everyone's

Re: [Elecraft] Filters for K3?

2009-12-27 Thread Philippe Trottet
Dear Martin,
I've ordered some days ago... and received yesterday the 6Khz for AM ESSB and
the 1.8K for SSB. So I installed them yesterday evening.
Considering my antenna, delta loop for 40m and the huge signals received for
the ex-USSR side, 59+30 up is common, the 1.8k in addition to the 2.8k is
really helpful and I like the fact when moving the width knob it goes
automatically from one filter to another. Just an example from yesterday as I
made rx tests after installing the 1.8K, 2 x UA big guns were on 7.085 and
7.090 respectively and polluted the spectrum with very bad tuned amps with lot
of splatters. With the K3 and the 8 pole filters I was able to distinguish and
follow a qso on 7.088 performed by 2 M0 Hams. The shift was reduced on 1.00
and the bandwidth 1.6~1.7 with the 1.8K activated. Using the AFX for audio was
also helpful.
Considering my cw traffic, the 400Hz is perfect for general purpose.

My actual config, all 8 poles filters

Elecrafters,
i am about to order filters for my K3 and would like to hear from the

Thanks

Martin

Re: [Elecraft] securing K2 RF board

2009-12-27 Thread srife
I used the Panavise circuit board holder (large) even after
installing the 2D connectors. Just adjust it for a light hold and it will
stay in the vise ok. Even some of the components mounted REALLY close to the
edge of the board had the same affect as the 2D connectors, as far as using
the Panavise. Just have to adjust the clamping action to hold it lightly but
securely. The springs in the jaws will allow the jaws to hold on to the
board out at the end of the jaw, while touching the 2D connectors at the
other end.

Don I don't know how you did it without some kind of a vise. But I
guess everybody has their own technique. Personally I like all the
conveniences and gadgets that are available for this kind of work.

The K2 was my first major assembly project. I had never done
anything nearly that complex before. Not bragging but everything checked out
ok the first time everytime, and I did it in about 6 days if I remember
correctly. Of course that was 12 or so hours a day not counting the breaks
that I had to take. I had a weeks vacation scheduled just for building the
K2. That's probably not a major feat for some of the guys that built K2s,
but it was a personal first and best for me as a rank beginner.

[Elecraft] K3: Three factors affecting noisiness (long)

2009-12-27 Thread Al Lorona
I have been making some critical listening tests of the K3 receiver which are
completely subjective and non-repeatable by anybody else, but for what it's
worth I would like to share my observations.

In my opinion, the three biggest factors governing the noisiness of the
receiver are:

1. Headphone response
2. Receiver gain
3. AGC settings

1. Headphone response. It was almost shocking to me how different the receiver
sounds with different types of headphones. It may be that most folks could
solve 80% of their noisiness just by changing headphones. It seems to me that
using very hi-fi headphones (or ear buds) can increase the white noise hiss
above 10 kHz significantly. There is a night-and-day difference between some
iPod-style ear buds and a computer headset that I own, for example. I am not
here to recommend one brand over another, but simply to warn folks that a lot
of what you are hearing might be eliminated just by switching to another
(perhaps cheaper!) headphone or ear bud. If you can hear 12 kHz, that pair of
iPod/Walkman/MP3 ear phones may be doing you more harm than good.

2. Receiver gain. Bill, W4ZV, and Barry, N1EU, have already said this well
enough, but I can't stress enough how critical it is not to use too much gain.
This means turning off the preamp-- which for some reason a lot of folks are
very resistant to doing-- or leaving the front end attenuator on, or turning
down the RF gain. If you can't imagine leaving the attenuator on (and the
preamp off) all the time below 10 MHz, you are probably just the person who can
most benefit by doing so. You will not lose any sensitivity. Things will get
*quieter*, but they won't disappear completely.

On a very related note, I once wrote about my experience with well-known QRPer
and author Rick Campbell, KK7P, and though I can no longer find it in the
Elecraft archives it appears to have been preserved here, on page 7 of this
document:

http://www.larclub.net/history/document/2000-/2003-10%20HI-Q%20October%202003.pdf

3. AGC settings. There are two pertinent parameters here: AGC THR (threshhold)
and AGC SLP (slope).

AGC THR, which goes from 002 to 008 (with a default of 005) has a major effect
on noise level at the audio output. If you turn it down to 002, the AGC kicks
in at a much lower level-- even on the noise when no signal is present-- and
this tends to quiet the receiver. Tune to noise, change this parameter from 002
to 008 and listen to the difference.

AGC SLP, which is adjustable from 000 to 015, with a default of 012, has a
lesser effect on the noise. Lower numbers allow a wider audio dynamic range...
loud signals sound louder. Higher numbers compress or hard limit the audio into
a smaller dynamic range... weak signals and strong signals tend to sound
equally loud.

As a final thought, why wouldn't the folks who object to the noisiness leave NR
on all the time at a relatively unagressive level such as F5-1? You paid for
it; why not use it?

I'm not saying you shouldn't pursue other remedies such as low pass filters,
etc., but simply suggesting there may be a better way to use what's already
there.

Just a few observations.

Al  W6LX

P. S. As a final final thought, consider that I cannot listen to MP3 recordings
(or satellite radio) because of the digital artifacts in the audio that drive
my psycho-acoustical brain crazy, yet which many people can't hear or don't
mind. I believe this gives me a certain empathy for the folks who feel the same
about the K3 audio, as well as empathy for one possible objection to my NR
suggestion above.

[Elecraft] philosophical discussion

2009-12-27 Thread Rob Carter
Hi,
Have been following some of the discussions here with interest. Thanks for the
friendly and positive way you deal with topics of all sorts.
First of all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the team at Elecraft and any
every one else in the group.

My interest in Ham Radio is varied. I like the K2 for it's frugal use of DC
power. I use radios in a portable realm sometimes, in the motorhome, at ILLW
and Field Days.. . of course they sometimes get plugged in at home as well lol.
Mainly SSB, but my CW is improving.
So like all i seek the ideal radio... a go anywhere, yet still sophisticated
enough to work as a base radio.
A good Rx is important to me. It needs to sound smooth to the ear for extended
use. The radio also needs to be stable enough for data use

Currently running a FT897 as a utility radio and an old IC 740 as a field day
or ILLW radio.
The cool features and portability of the 897 are great and the Rx performance
of the old Icom seem to be great for ILLW and Field Days, well here in New
Zealand anyway, lol.
Have thought to upgrade to a more highly spec portable QRP radio that can be
used with an amplifier on base or in the motorhome and of course stand alone in
the field.

So my question is... i guess... does anyone use a K2 or K3 in a Motorhome (is
that an RV in your language)?
Is it tough enough for the mobile environment?

Do people use the K2 or K3 as a Field Day station or Dxpedition radio?

Is a K2 suitable for use on a base station with usual long wire or yagi
antennae?

I know some of this topic has already appeared in various magazines etc, but
would value your insights. Your time is valuable, but if you could spare me a
couple of lines re your experiences with using the radios that would be great.
Thanks
Rob
