[Elecraft] K3: Use of LP-Pan & Roofing filter interaction

2012-10-15 Thread Edward R Cole
Looking into refining my use of the LP-Pan on the 1st IF of the
K3. One artifact is that the spectrum of the IF has a gain dip at
the center frequency which apparently is due to interaction of the
2.8 KHz roofing filter that is also loading the IF.

I am wondering if I might be able to program the K3 to use an open
xtal filter position when I am using the LP-Pan? I do not use any of
the K3 beyond the IF so loss of use is not an issue; all signal
processing is via the LP-Pan and a Delta44 soundcard to the sw
running in my computer. I might have to add a resistor to provide
proper impedance loading for proper gain levels to appear at the IF output.

The dip in gain of the spectrum makes that frequency unusable in my
application so looking for solutions (that are not invasive to the
radio). One option is inserting a pin diode switch to isolate the
roofing filter bank but that requires some RF designing and precise
surgery on the RF board.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-10-15 Thread Fred Jensen
At Pacificon, I cornered one of my contest buddies, Bob, K6XX, an
Elecraft employee, about my KAT500. Well ... actually ... he cornered
me about SOTA and the summit he lives on, we do know each other fairly
well. I asked him if the first KAT500 had shipped. He said "Yes." I
said, "And, it was mine?". He said, "Only in your dreams!". I really
love you Bob. :-) But, in reality,

They made a redesign based on field testing ... and thank you Elecraft
for that. It's now in production, yours and mine will come. I looked
at a production model, it has all the gozintas and gozoutas that I was
looking for. It'll come, they all have.

Re: [Elecraft] 9 and 15 Pin Y Connectors

2012-10-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

I don't have a source, but I need to give you some information regarding
the 9 pin connector.

The 9 pin 'Y' may give you problems. RS-232 signalling is for point to
point communications only. If there are two drivers on a signal line,
they will interfere with each other (even if idle).
In other words, if there is anything connected to pins 3, 4 or 7 in the
device on the far side of the "Y" connector, it will interfere with
communications between the K3 and the computer (Microham Digikeyer).

In other words, you cannot connect another device that normally drives
an RS-232 interface.
Anything that is connected to the "Y" must be 'listen only'

Note: you can not use a full DB9 splitter with microHAM interface
and the K3. You must use a "listen only" Y - one that connects
the "foreign" device to only the data *from* the K3. The data
lines *to* the K3 can connect only to the microHAM interface (or

[Elecraft] Success with KX3 transmit Bias calibration test

2012-10-15 Thread Mike Weir

I had received some emails from Gary and Vic at Elecraft today regarding my
failure to complete the transmit bias test on the KX3. The trouble turned out
to be my power supply to the KX3 was not putting out the current needed to run
the test. I was needing in the ball park of 3 amps from the supply that
apparently it was not giving. I hooked the KX3 up to the Astron supply and the
test ran textbook perfect. Thanks to all for there ideas and support.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RS232 Query

2012-10-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

You will not need to connect any more pins, but you can try putting a
jumper between pins 7 and 8 at the computer end of the cable. No
guarantee that it will help, that depends on whether your application
tries to do handshaking, but it certainly will not hurt anything.

You did not state that you closed and restarted Winlog32 after you
changed the com ports. You might even want to try a computer restart.

No, it's just the three pins, RxD on 2, RxD on 3, and signal ground on 5.

If you can read IF unsolicited data from the K3 but it does not respond to
commands, perhaps TxD is not wiggling? If the K3 configuration menu is
set to AUTOINF = AUTO 1 then the K3 will send an IF packet on VFO A change
without requiring a command.

Can the K3 Utility connect to the K3 with your cable?

Could you borrow a straight-thru 9-pin serial cable to help isolate the

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-10-15 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Hi Bob,

I apologize for the confusion on this. You are only 1 day later, as the
Friday phone orders were entered after the Friday Dayton orders. Your
order will ship before the Saturday orders. The introduction and first
sales of the KAT500 on Friday for Dayton attendees was the Dayton 'special'.

If Vicki said what you said below, she was mistaken. (I'd ask her, but
Vicki is no longer with the company.) We were not planning on taking
phone orders that Friday, but some heard about it from Dayton attendees
and they overloaded the staff here by calling that day. To say it was a
crazy Day for the sales team here is an understatement ;-)

Also note: HTML clipboard We are only shipping KAT500-F factory
assembled orders for the first two weeks as we finalize the kit assembly
manual. (As is our normal process, we use feedback from field testers
and our in-house assembly staff to improve the assembly manual during
that period.)

We are ramping up production as fast as is practical. Please be patient
with us as we go through the first several weeks of ramp-up. We're all
working hard to get these out as quickly as possible without sacrificing
quality.

73,

Eric

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs

2012-10-15 Thread John Magliacane
Hi Ray.

One possibility might be improper assembly of the transceiver that is causing
the transistors to not mate properly with the heatsink on the bottom chassis.

Been there... done that. :-)

Here's the story behind repeated 2SC1969 failures in my K2 back in 2003, and
the mechanics behind the cause:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2003-September/023145.html

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2003-September/023307.html

There were never any over-current issues, and it took several transistor
replacements before I realized the problem was due to the incorrect placement
of the lock washers associated with the 2-D fasteners.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 14th & 15th, 2012

2012-10-15 Thread kevinr
Good Afternoon,
Both bands were a little weak yesterday. However, there was a
little discussion about Pacificon and Elecraft along with the usual
wishing for rain :) Luckily most folks got a little so the land is not
so parched. Here it seems not to be soaking in but rather simply
running off. After so long it will take a while for the ground to wet
properly :)
I had read earlier today that there some geomagnetic storming going
on lately but there was not much noise on either band. A few clicks of
lightning pumped the AGC for a second but losing a letter here and there
is OK. Once the QSB gets rapid I shut off the AGC so I can copy a
little better. Between auroral flutter from the north and lightning
strikes from the Midwest cross continent copy gets tough.

On to the lists =>

   On 14049.5 kHz at 2200z:
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
K0DTJ - Brian - CA - K3 - 4113
NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 820
W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139

   On 7045.5 kHz at 0200z:
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
K0DTJ - Brian - CA - K3 - 4113
K9ZTV - Kent - MO - K3 - 21
W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139
N0TA - John - CO - K3 - 994

I hope you are all enjoying the transition to autumn. Time to button
up for winter. Get all the antenna repair work done and the wood stacked
and covered. Then I can spend a cozy winter snowed in on a mountain.
But, then again, we may have a warm, wet one this year.
Until next week stay well,
   73,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

Just another data point, but the Logitech MK360 wireless USB keyboard

SURE! It's even the right way to do it. In a typical battery portable
operation, there's no good reason to use a common mode choke or any form
of "balun."

The only situation in which a good ferrite choke could be useful is when
the rig is somehow earth-referenced, as it could be when used at home
running on mains power, or with the chassis tied to earth ground. In
that situation, the feedline could pick up noise and couple it to the
antenna, and the choke prevents that.

The noise some are experiencing sounds like a Pin One Problem in the
computer, the rig, or both. Two cures, use both, but do #1 first,
because it's simpler and cheaper. NO TRANSFORMER IS REQUIRED.

1) Bond from the chassis of the computer/sound card to the chassis of
the rig with short fat copper. For more on this see
http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf

2) Use a serious multi-turn ferrite choke on the audio cable, using the
measured data in Appendix Oneof http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf
as a guide. Use Fair-Rite #31 or #43, depending the bands where you are
hearing noise. Put the choke on the audio cable(s), NOT on the bonding
wire.

3) Another important point. High futility cables often have lousy
shields (and often no shield at all, only a wire connecting the shield
contacts). I build my own audio cables using RG58 or RG174 and audio
connectors that I buy from Full Compass in Madison, WI. See the
above-cited references for part numbers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware 4.51 - I want to go back one version

2012-10-15 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You probably still it in your firmware folder. Using the Windows Explorer,
navigate to your firmware folder, and delete hmcu0451.hex, or rename
hmcu0451.hex to hmcu0451.savehex

Then click "Check Versions Now" and the K3 Utility will find the highest
version MCU # (examining only hmcu.hex files) in the folder as
"available". You can then "send all firmware" to go down one MCU level.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q to soundcard isolation

2012-10-15 Thread Barry LaZar
Jeff et al,
I think I've been misreading things. I just sent you a note, but I
was thinking the problem was on the computer side. I just checked my
setup with no antenna input. There is a low level whine, but it
disappears when I connect up the antenna. I suspect I will detect it
again on 15 or 10 meters until I turn on the preamp.

My earlier comments were based on using the I&Q data with NaP3 and
using the computer's speakers for audio out. Except for some refresh
noise, which I noted in a private note to you, there is no noise problem.

At this point, I'm not sure what the lash up is. When using the
KX3's I&Q, I turn down/off the radio's audio and do EVERYTHING on my
laptop. I do use the line in to my laptop when I want to use the radio
as intended but want greater audio than is available from the radio's
speaker. What am I missing??

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q to soundcard isolation

2012-10-15 Thread N6363LLL
Hello All,

There are big differences between interfacing a PC to the KX3 I/Q port
compared to the needs of digital modes that use the headphone and mic audio
connections. The I/Q port requires a flat bandpass to at least 48Khz. If
you decide to use isolation transformers for the I/Q port, they must be very
high quality and support wide bandwidth. If you use an external soundcard
for the I/Q port, you must use a high quality soundcard that meets pro audio
standards for noise, etc. See the data on the N8LP website about soundcards
suitable for I/Q use. Your laptop might have a high quality stereo input
soundcard and it's worth trying that first.

For the digital modes, a Rigblaster, Microham interface, US Navigator
interface, RigExpert, SignalLink, etc. isolate monophonic low bandwidth
audio going in both directions. They are not suitable for use on the I/Q
port.

[Elecraft] FS: Astron SS-30M Power Supply

2012-10-15 Thread Craig Smith
I have for sale my Astron SS-30M power supply in perfect condition. This is
ideal for powering a K3 class 100 watt rig, and provides 30 amps in amateur
class service and 25 amps continuous duty. Metering of both output voltage and
current. I bought this new in 2006 and it has since performed flawlessly in
my K3 CW contesting setup. Quiet both electrically and acoustically.

This unit has been modded to include amber LED backlighting of both meters.
This provides attractive lighting so that the meter readings are visible in a
dark environment. Light color is a good match to the K3 display.

Your purchase includes the original Astron documentation and box.

Price is $130 which includes USPS Priority Mail shipping to you USA address.
PayPal only, please.

If interested, please contact me directly via email: craig (at)

[Elecraft] Efficiency of speech processing in KX3

2012-10-15 Thread Ignacy
In the past I extolled virtues of speech processing in KX3 but it seems that
this was premature.

In a number of SSB QSOs, KX3 was not too strong despite setting COMP to the
max and MIC GAIN to a few bars. Many marginal QSOs in portable situation
where an extra few db would help quite a bit.

LP100 has a measurement of avg to peak power. K3, my standard of comparison,
can approach -7db. KX3 does between -11 and -13db. Strangely, K2 was better
at -9db.
In comparisons, K2 sounded stronger than KX3. So KX3 has an extra potential
of 4-6db.

So speech processor in KX3 appears to be unfinished. Not much difference
between CMP settings of 20 and 30 (max). In contrast, K3 sounds good at COMP
of 20, has contest/DX quality at about 28, and anything above 30 is way too
much.

Any comments?

K3 with earlier release of firmware also had a weak speech processor. After
a fix to firmware, K3 is now a very efficient SSB radio.

Ignacy, NO9E

I do connect KX3 I&Q directly into my MacBookPro stereo in-line without any
additional isolation too and it works great without any problem at all
running under a parallels desktop virtual machine.
Is there any special reason to isolate this line ?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 KXBC3 Error Code

2012-10-15 Thread hawley, charles j jr
Mine went well too. I updated to the latest version first. I did charge for
about 4 hours and the 2400 mah NiMH came up to 11.7 vdc. The next day I went to
charge again just to see, and the charger posted an err which was because the
battery voltage was already high I believe. That err occurs if they are already
charged.
So all as expected.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 intermittent low power issue

2012-10-15 Thread K9IR
Hi Mike--

Just saw your reply (in my spam folder!) after returning from a 2 week
vacation; thanks very much. I ended up working via email with Elecraft support,
but unfortunately we couldn't resolve it, so the rig currently is in CA for
repair ;-). I will be very curious to learn from them why the power issue
occurred.

Have you checked the connections of the KPA3 100w amplifier module. I have a
friend that was experiencing a similar issue, and discovered that the module
had become unseated somewhat causing intermittent RF power output issues. I
hope this helps.

best of luck Mike N8XPQ

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question

2012-10-15 Thread Holger Schurig
No, you can't do this with the "mini loop" antenna, you need a good &
strong signal source. Please read all the gory details at:

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/RX%20sideband%20null%20procedures%20rev%20A1.pdf

Works only with MCU 1.22 firmware.
