Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter idea
I use an Alpha 4510 Power/SWR Meter and it does have a power delivered/forward setting just for that. That setting takes all of these factors into consideration for the final product it reads from .03-3000w. That is the reason for my trusted Oak Hills Research WM-2 QRP wattmeter still in line for my KX3. 73, Fred/N0AZZ K3 Ser # 6730--KX3 # 5210--K2/100 # 6470-KAT100 P3/SVGA--KAT500--W2 Amps Elecraft KPA500 HF/6m--Alpha's 9500 HF--87A HF--Mirage B-5030-G 300+w--(2) B-5016-G's 165w 2m -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Vic Rosenthal K2VCO Sent: Tuesday, December 24, 2013 8:08 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter idea I just ordered a W2 wattmeter, haven't received it yet, and I already want to change something! Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Morse Practice
Hi Ken, Dick's solution works only doing Morse decode with the KX3 utility program. So you end up using this to view your practice Morse rather than the VFO B display area on the KX3. I've not found a solution yet that allows you to use the KX3 standalone and not have the VFO B area almost immediately switch back to a frequency display after you hesitate with your Morse practice. [Elecraft] Weird K3 SSB problems
I was using the K3 today. The VOX kept cycling to transmit and back with no voice input. Sounded like an easy problem to fix. Just touch up the antivox. Nope. Listening in the monitor, there is a rushing sound with clicking (like fans in the background or something with a superimposed woodpecker). Clearly that spurious noise is what was tripping the vox off/on. Next removing the mike plug, the rushing sound was still there. With no mike input where is it coming from? Unlikely to be RFI since it is there at 1 watt. Setting the mike gain to zero and compression doesn't fix it. Compression level does substantial increase or decrease it. Any suggestions? 73 de Brian/K3KO - No virus found in this message. [Elecraft] Weird K3 SSB problems fixed
Thanks to tips from several people of the list this problem was solved. It turns out that a scope showed there was a 300 mv audio signal on line in. Line in was not selected and I don't understand how it got to the mic input. Bleed through? I normally use line in for PSK in the data A mode. Never the less, I had shot myself if the foot. The SDR RX/Rocky connected to the K3 normally has its audio sent to a sound card with no speaker/earphones connected. Today I listened to it a bit on a different sound card. Resetting the sound card choice, I'd sent it to the SC used for PSK transmit tones. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 12/25/2013 17:28, Brian Alsop wrote: I was using the K3 today. All the peripherals get switched with 2 of Green Heron GHEverywhere boxes and the 16 contacts. Keep an old Dell6?? Box going and view the screen at the control sight with Remote Administrator program. The Idiom Press EZ card occasionally hangs up so I use one contact to repower the rotors also one to power up an auto tuner. The rest switch 6 pack, 2 4 sq, and 4 Beverages. Is it the guy's first rig, or has he owned and used a dozen or more over decades on the air? Is he a serious DXer, contester, or casual ragchewer? All product reviews must be read through a strong BS filter. In this particular list, for example, the TS480 is unique, being one of the first (and still few) HF rigs specifically designed for remote operation. Likewise, the 746 (I've owned two) provides a lot of bang for the buck and is fairly robust, but it's got lots of phase noise and a weak front end. Jim, K9YC sed: [snip] I wouldn't put too much credence in a sort like this -- ratings like this are highly subjective [end snip] Which is exactly why I limited the list to 100 or more reviews. I figure that folks who buy, or might buy, a K3 or K2 (or any other rig), are probably as subjective as these reviews. Hence, increased validity overall for the average Joe Ham. If you were to review only serious contesters, I'm sure the K3 would stand out even more. But most of the reviews, by category of reviewer, are not from contesters. [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones
I am looking for a pair of noise cancelling headphones. I have a pair of Sony MDR-V6's that I love, but they do not have noise cancelling capability and my wife's embroidery machine is severely limiting my radio operations. I have already looked at the Yamaha CM500's because they come so highly recommended on this group. If they're noise cancelling, I cannot find that information about them. I want something that will last. The MDR-V6's have lasted at least 10 years if not longer. I've only had to replace the earpads. I want something that *covers* my ear *not* something that sits *on* my ear. Those that sit *on* my ears are uncomfortable after a very short while. Re: [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones
The Radiosport RS 20 headphones are the way to go. They're not cheap, but they really do the job. They have NO electronic circuitry to give RFI problems, just 24 dB of noise reduction due to their excellent acoustic isolation. When I have them on with any receiver audio at all going I can't hear the phone ring on my operating desk. They're also extremely comfortable -- the only headphones I've ever used that let me operate the full 24 hours of Sweepstakes with zero discomfort. Their build quality is light years beyond the cheap plastic construction of the Heil, Bose or Yamaha phones. The RS 60 has the same headset with the addition of a boom microphone for phone operation. 73... I couldn't wear the Radiosport cans for an hour. I'd rate the acoustic seal of CM500s comparable to Sony MDR7506 / MDR-V6, all of which I've owned and like a lot. In other words, if you're not happy with the MDR-V6, you won't be happy with the CM500. :) I have heard that east coast contesters love the Bose noise cancelling headphones, but I've never heard them. I did try a pair of Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones almost 20 years ago, and they seemed to work, but I wasn't being critical, and that was 20 years ago. :) The best, and most comfortable, noise isolating headphones I know of are the Etymotic Research ER4-series in-ear earsets, I own two pairs, and wore out one of the cables. They come with 3-4 generic ear fittings, and I found one of them to work well for me -- good isolation and comfort. Cost was about $200 eight years ago when I bought them. The greatest isolation is achieved with custom ear molds, which you buy from an audiologist who fits them to your ear canal. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3/K2: cumulative HF xcvr review from eHam
From your perspective Wayne, i'd read them all too. From my perspective as just a ham, I've pretty much given up on eHam reviews. Like me trying to learn how to pilot a helicopter, they are all over the sky. Plus, I don't know who they are, what they expected, whether or not that was realistic, or whether the actually knew what they were doing. I expected the KX3 to be right up there near the top, too, but then I realized it has only 99 reviews. Just missed The Cutoff :) eHam is a highly approximate metric for radio quality. But I do read every review, since they're are often posted by customers who aren't subscribed to our reflector. Re: [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones
True noise cancelling headphones will cut noise far, far beyond anything acoustic isolation from ear pads can accomplish. I have a pair of Audio-Technia QuierPoint ATH-ANC1. They are on ear types so I didn't recommend them to the person asking for ones that cover the ears. They are very comfortable for me. When I fly, as the roar and whine of the big jet engines invades the cabin, I just switch them on and all the racket becomes a quite background purr. I often wear them for the entire 11 hours from the west coast of the USA to Europe, even if I'm not listening to any programs. The active circuitry in true noise-cancelling phones inverts the sound arriving and so actually cancels it out. The circuit takes a few seconds to adapt so when the attendant brings my drink she has no trouble waking me. 73 Ron AC7AC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Noise Cancelling Headphones
I use the Bose QC-15 as about all I do is CW and the audio on these is wonderful. The noise cancelling though is almost 100% perfect; my old Alpha with its blower is 18 from my head and with the QC-15 on I can't but just barely tell the amp is on or off. I was thinking about getting a headset with a mic though Bose does make the A20 for pilots, at $1100 for what is essentially the QC-15 with a boom mic, I'll pass. They do make a A100T snap on mic for the QC15 but they are $250 for just the mic. I was referred by quite a few people here to check out the Yamaha CM500 for a fine mic, quick match to the K3 and comfortable headsets at $59. I'm so happy with the Bose QC15 that I'm going to keep using these and am going to need to figure out another way to get a mic into the K3 in a way that will be convenient for contesting should I ever decide to do a phone contest. I have an Electrovoice RE-10 which would probably be nice needs no power maybe I can make a clamp-on boom that I can remove from the desk once the contest is over. I also have several condenser mics but they are for recording and would be excess and just problematic for ham use. Anyone have any suggestion of a removable boom mic other than the A100T that will attach to the QC-15 and make it simple to use and then remove when the contest is over? I don't want to use velcro.
