[Elecraft] K2/100 7211 TX Power output meter stopped working
Good Morning, Yeah, not sure what happened but appears when in high power mode over 10 watts power control does not work either. It gives full output. I just replaced diodes D1 and D2 1N5711s but the problem continues the same. Before I get any deeper into this does anyone have any experience with this failure and any ideas? I sure thought the diodes would fix this. I triple checked my work and the orientation of the diodes on the board. 73, Mike K0AZ K0AZ Mike Sanders EM37cd SW Missouri www.k0az.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] PSK-D Feature request
The problem is the terminology, John. In this case FSK and PSK should have been read as ASCII and Morse code. The translation from ASCII to Varicode to PSK and vice versa as well as ASCII etc first to 5 bit Baudot and then to FSK is done by software in the radio itself, as opposed to software running on a computer and processing audio going to and from a radio. The second missing link is that FSK means simply a shifting carrier on a given frequency with a given offset in the frequency domain. FSK can be amplified with whatever class used, PSK however is a single frequency which' phase is reversed in time hence amplitude driven and must be amplified linearly, something not understood by some operators who produce broad sigs with PSK, because the output meter is driven far too high or the input of their TX is already clipping. Just my two cents... Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 7211 TX Power output meter stopped working
I had a failure of the EL5146C op amp. You might check it. In my case, mine shorted internally, which brought the +5 volt supply to zero, which made the K2 think the KPA100 was not installed. But, yours might have opened or something. I think D16 D17, as well as the EL5146C might be pretty good targets for static discharges from the antenna. Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 7211 TX Power output meter stopped working
Mike, Check the power control 5 watts requested. If you actually get more than 10 watts output then either the diodes (I understand you replaced them) or KPA100 U6 may be the cause - there are a few other possibilities too. During a TUNE, you should have voltage into U6 pin 3, and approximately twice that voltage at U6 pin 7. If no output at U6 pin 7, check U6 pin 8. If it is not 5 volts, then you have a firmware problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/3/2014 8:21 AM, Mike Sanders wrote: Sorry that should have been D16 and 17. Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio line out level with blue tooth hearing aid amp
Thanks for the comments. Using the LINE OUT at a fixed level - whatever that might be - does not allow volume control from the front panel AF/RF knobs. With this setup the only volume control is on the blue tooth transmitter which does not allow fine and immediate control as the operating environment changes. With LINE OUT set to PHONES, the output level is controlled from the front panel which is desirable. However, as stated in my original post, there is no AF/RF setting that delivers enough signal volume, regardless of the volume setting on the blue tooth transmitter. However, while the signal level is way down, the radio control beeps are at their normal volume suggesting that some adjustment/switch is incorrect. What might this adjustment/switch be? The other issue is that sound out of the front panel audio jack, while loud and controllable, is very distorted as heard via the blue tooth transmitter. This may be because of an impedance mismatch; I don't know right off what the input impedance of the blue tooth unit is. Another reason may be a very limited dynamic range in the blue tooth unit. The blue tooth transmitter does work as advertised when used as intended: enhancing speech levels in a natural environment. This agan suggests that impedance matching and/or dynamic range may be the issue(s), at least when using the K3's front panel audio jack. ...robert On 1/1/2014 20:45, Robert G Strickland wrote: Happy New Year to all. The audio level for signals is almost too low to hear at any level of AF/RF gain, but the beep level for radio control is very loud. How do I get the signal output from the LINE OUT jack up to a useable level? Any thoughts as to why the audio from the front panel PHONES is so distorted? Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 input protection
Jim and Steve, While the COR will do its job, I recommend that you not abuse it. If you hear the COR operating during transmit, it would be wise to provide some external switching (relay) to remove the RX antenna while transmitting or insert an attenuator. Of course, the best solution is to locate the RX antenna away from the TX antenna, but that is not always a practical solution. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/3/2014 11:38 AM, Jim Bennett wrote: Steve - I have a similar setup as Arie - an 80 meter Inverted L at 40 feet for my transmitting antenna and a Hustler 5BTV vertical ground mounted about 10 feet from being directly under the vertical. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 input protection
I saw a suggestion somewhere for using a small grain-of-wheat bulb across the 2nd antenna's lead as you gradually increase transmit power. If I remember correctly, the bulb I used was a 5 V @ 50 mA lamp, typical of those used as LCD screen illuminators. I tried that with a 600 ' Beverage that is at least 75 feet from any transmit antenna and was very surprised to see the bulb glowing brightly on a couple bands with only 50 watts into the LPDA up at 55'. The Beverage is fed with a 9:1 transformer and is about 8 feet off the ground, running away from any active antennas. Try it, it's quite an eye opener. 73, Charlie k3ICH - Original Message - From: Arie Kleingeld PA3A p...@xs4all.nl To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, January 03, 2014 11:12 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 input protection Steve, the subRX of the K3 has its protection (an rf triggered relay if the power coming into the rx is too high). [Elecraft] Audio feedback
Dick, You did not indicate if the feedback is in the internal K3 speaker or an external speaker. I have no problem with my K3 using an ext. spkr (but that is because it is unamplified 1950's era National 8-inch speaker). I do get audio feedback with my KX3 because I am using cheap computer speakers that are prone to RF rectification in the amplifier. I have to run the speaker volume down if I operate 300w on HF or 6m. That requires running the KX3 volume too high for my tastes (tends to become distorted at the high end). I like running a combination volume settings where the volume in the KX3 is set about 8-12. So back to my point that cheap amplified speakers can be subject to stray RF in the shack. My 300w amp is still open-air and not enclosed in a cabinet (which would also help reduce feedback in my wife's FM radio in her hobby room next to the shack). I bought her the West Mountain speaker for her computer and it is totally free of RF pickup; I'll be getting a pair for my KX3 sometime this winter. Also buying an enclosure for the 300w amp including bypassing of the dc and control lines. But first checking monitor setting is a good idea. I've had that happen a time or two going between CW and SSB. 73, Ed - KL7UW From: Dick Brown richardjoa...@comcast.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Audio feedback Message-ID: dc821876-fdd9-461c-9171-03a488492...@comcast.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I am getting audio feedback via the speaker when I transmit on K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio line out level with blue tooth hearing aid amp
Happy New Year, Don... Using audio out from the rear speaker jack is the same as the front headphone jack: low audio which becomes distorted as the gain from either the radio or the BT transmitter is increased. [Elecraft] Shipping. K3
I've not had to ship anything worth $4,000 so have not encountered any packing issues with USPS, UPS, or Fedex. But I would like to say a word about those Pelican Cases. I first encountered them in the workplace 15 years ago when we had a portable VHF repeater built-into one of the smaller size cases. The foam padding makes for a very secure shipping package. I liked the idea so much I built my 10-GHz portable station into one. I had room for a few tools, horn antenna, and some spare parts and even a small sealed acid battery. Originally, I could carry it on airplanes for trips. Post 911, TSA screening made that dubious, so one year I shipped the pelican case by Fedex using no extra external packing. I did add a hardened brass combo lock (which was fine for Fedex; I did open the case so the Fedex clerk could see what is inside). Note that airlines do not guarantee electronic items in checked luggage. Everything survived fine. My KX3 will be riding in this case in place of the FT-817 I used to own. I got it back because this was not shipping for mfr repairs. I informed the hotel and they were happy to hold it in their baggage room a few days until my arrival. Fedex just delivered to the hotel. This did cost shipping but that is the reality of flying these days. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com Kits made by KL7UW Dubus Mag business: dubus...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping K3 in containers you want back?
Jim, I do not know the practices used at Watsonville, but I can tell you mine. I do much of the repair work on legacy Elecraft gear (K2, K1, KX1, XV series and other thru-hole kits). I always attempt to return the gear in the same carton it was shipped in. Exceptions will be when the original packing is no longer serviceable or it arrived in a UPS Priority Mail box and I am asked to return it via UPS (the Priority Mail boxes are only for Priority Mail). Common sense prevails at my work station. The original carton and the paperwork stay together with the rig while it is being serviced - including pelican cases or other special protective cases. The decision of which box to pack it in comes only at the time of packing, and again, everything is together during that process. So if you ship me something for repair in some special packaging, you will get it back in that same packaging if at all possible. I assume similar practices are in place at other Elecraft repair depots, but I cannot say for certain because the subject has not come up before, and I have not asked the others for their procedures. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/2/2014 3:39 PM, Jim Miller wrote: I have sent items back in the manufacturers case only to have them returned to me after repair or whatever in a different carton altogether (NOT necessarily as sturdy or well padded as the original I had used). Re: [Elecraft] P3 svga hangs
Hi, George. I reported a similar problem here on the reflector in early December: - I am using a P3 with the SVGA option. It is connected to a K3. I find that frequently after transmitting -- particularly calling a DX station in a split-frequency pileup -- the P3 display comes back sluggish or almost frozen for up to 20 seconds or so. Then it returns to providing real-time information. It's almost like the P3 is suffering from data overload, finally processes it, and gets back to normal. This is particularly annoying as one cannot spot where the DX is listening in said pileup because the screen is essentially frozen and does not display stations real-time until it unfreezes. This happens regardless of mode (CW, SSB or RTTY). In RTTY this freeze time also locks up the USB keyboard. The problem does not appear to be RFI related, as I get it regardless of the power output level. - This may or may not be your situation. It only seems to occur in fixed-tune mode. Elecraft (Howard and Paul) responded that they were able to duplicate the problem, but I have never heard a resolution other than to use tracking mode instead. As you say, this is very annoying and makes operating RTTY a chore. I've since started using a different rig, in part due to this issue. [Elecraft] Experimental firmware for those who *do* want to listen to the AM band on the KX3...
Hi all, The KX3 is primarily an HF-6 meter radio. But it does have useful sensitivity in the 500-1700 kHz AM broadcast band (or BCB for short). I'm looking for a few testers for a new firmware release (rev 1.84) that can improve AM-band sensitivity by as much as 10 to 20 dB for stations below 1300 kHz. This only applies if you have a KXAT3 ATU installed; the new firmware changes the way the ATU handles this range. The actual sensitivity improvement varies greatly depending on what kind of antenna is used. Operating Details: In the ATU MD menu entry, you can now tap '1' (PRE) to select one of two optimizations for the AM broadcast band: BCB NOR or BCB=160. BCB NOR is the default setting: below 1300 kHz, the KXAT3's L-network is configured as a filter to reject harmonic images. BCB=160 uses the normal 160-meter L-network settings below 1300 kHz (i.e., the settings you obtained when you tuned up the ATU on 160 meters). There's a tradeoff here. BCB NOR will provide much better rejection of BCB station harmonic images--as much as 50 dB at the low end of the band--but it also attenuates some signals significantly. BCB=160 doesn't reject harmonics as well, but it will bring signal strength in many cases. Theory: We made two design choices in the KX3 that affect AM broadcast band reception. 1. Like all Elecraft transceivers, the KX3 uses special low-resistance RF diodes called PIN diodes for transmit/receive switching. These diodes perform very well on 160 meters and up, but fall off in linearity toward low end of the AM broadcast band. For this reason, the KX3's T/R switch is designed to have an inherent high-pass response. By the time you get to 500 kHz, signals are attenuated by nominally 30 dB. This does a very good job of protecting the PIN diodes. 2. Being primarily a ham-band transceiver, the KX3 doesn't have low-pass (half-octave) filters for frequencies below 160 meters. The KX3 is also a baseband SDR (software-defined radio) architecture, so tuning the VFO well below the low-pass filter cutoff can result in harmonic image responses if strong low-frequency signals are present. (These have no effect when listening above about 1.5 kHz.) The KXAT3 ATU module can help with the latter issue by acting as a low-pass filter, assuming you have the BCB NOR option in effect. As you tune the VFO down through the AM broadcast band, the L-network in the ATU is automatically adjusted to values of L and C that provide this filtering. There are also extra capacitors in the L-network that are only used when the radio is tuned below 1300 kHz. However, this can also attenuate signals as mentioned above. If BCB=160 is selected, the ATU will not be configured as a low-pass filter. It simply uses the 160-meter settings. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] OT: Shipping experiences
I do the packing and shipping of Rose's dust covers and carrying cases. The total is nearing 2K packages, and with only a couple of exceptions -all- have gone via USPS Priority Mail and usually reach their destinations in two to three days. Priority Mail now provides tracking numbers, BTW. The only one to go astray was due to me typo-ing a digit wrong in a ZIP code. The auto sorting routine had it shuttling between Los Angeles and Seattle for almost a month! Rose has a surprising number non-US customers and ships all over the world ... even Nepal. The record was a carrying case that went from here in Montana to Turkey in five days. Amazing! Non-US packages go via USPS Air Mail ... customs forms are a snap. USPS Priority Mail is slightly cheaper than UPS ground and is certainly faster, and any of the faster versions of UPS are -really- expensive. FedEx seems to vary widely, depending on the area. We've -never- had a satisfactory FedEx delivery, and won't use them under any circumstances. Then, there are the five customers that have stiffed her. Two are in the UK, two from the Visalia DX Convention and one US attorney. (;-( 73!
