[Elecraft] [K3] - Digital Modes Interface - Working Split
I started this email with another thought in mind. The more I typed, the more I thought I may be wrong about what I was thinking. First, let me emphatically state that I *know* the K3 will just let you plug into a computer sound card - I get that. I like something between my radio and computer; something other than the default sound card if for no other reason than to eliminate the odd beeps and boops over the air. I have used a SignaLink USB and am currently using an E-MU 0204. Now for this disclaimer, I am only a *very* casual contester. In the WPX RTTY contest last weekend, I only operated about 10 hours and that was spread out over 44 hours of the contest (the contest is 48 hours). Most of that was on Saturday. I am a QRS CW operator who prefers manual keying but will use the macros in RUMPed for contest exchanges. I operated for about an hour in the ARRL DX CW contest last night and will probably operate a few more hours on and off through the duration of the contest. I am no where near hard core and I operate in S P mode. I get serious for one contest and that is Field Day (I know, I know, it's not a contest. Really? Why do we keep score then?) where I will sit for hours. I already have CAT control with a GearMo USB-to-4port serial adapter. The reason I ask is that I have lately been using an E-MU 0204 for sound card modes. I've been thinking about purchasing either a Navigator or a microHAM Digi Keyer II. This is where I think I may be wrong in my thinking - the SignaLink USB has only mono receive capability. When working split, is there any reason why I have to be able to decode both the DX (or split station [i.e. W1AW/x]) and the calling station? Even if I were to make the decision to purchase a Navigator / microHAM interface, I'm on a budget so I'd have to sell both the SignaLink USB and the E-MU 0204. The E-MU 0204 can also be used to interface with the I / Q output of my KX3. So, I'm reluctant to sell the 0204. Now, some things on my wish list (way down the road) and I cannot really see how to hook all this up with either the Navigator or a microHAM interface (before you ask, I like lemonade flavored Kool-Aid): P3 SVGA adapter - okay, I know that just goes in the P3 and doesn't have anything to do with the Navigator / microHAM KPA500 KAT500 W2 wattmeter I know this list has an august crowd and I know what I'm asking when I ask for opinions ;) but that's what I need. Then I can make a better decision. 73, Joel - W4JBB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] - Digital Modes Interface - Working Split
Joel, If you are using the E-MU 0204 between the computer and the K3, that satisfies your desire to have something other than the default sound card between the K3 and the computer. Just tell the computer to use the on-board card for normal windows sounds and tell your digital modes software to use the 0204. The K3 contains isolation transformers, so there is no need for additional isolation provided by an external interface box. So IMHO, you already have everything needed. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/15/2014 7:14 AM, Joel Black wrote: I started this email with another thought in mind. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] - Digital Modes Interface - Working Split
When working split, is there any reason why I have to be able to decode both the DX (or split station [i.e. W1AW/x]) and the calling station? It's not absolutely necessary but it makes working split - especially in big pile-ups - much easier if one can tell where the target is listening. With the incessant calling of some stations one simply can not rely of seeing a signal pop up on the P3 or some software based panadapter. Now, some things on my wish list (way down the road) and I cannot really see how to hook all this up with either the Navigator or a microHAM interface (before you ask, I like lemonade flavored Kool-Aid): P3 SVGA adapter - okay, I know that just goes in the P3 and doesn't have anything to do with the Navigator / microHAM KPA500 KAT500 W2 wattmeter DigiKeyer II does not effect the use/connection of any of the K-line. The RS-232 connection from DKII connects to the P3 where the computer would normally connect. FSK and PTT connect to the K3 ACC jack using the DB15 Y adapter that is part of the Elecraft optional cable kit. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Build questions
Sean, For a first time builder, I recommend you simply follow the instructions in the manual. There are only a few components that require desoldering when adding the options . I would suggest that you add the Front Panel components for the KSB2 option while you have the Front Panel Board open. The K2 manual has a page that will lead you to the proper time to consider the installation of modules. Do *not* attempt to install the K60XV until you are completely finished with the K2 assembly, alignment and test. That option changes the alignment and operation for 40 meters, so don't do that until your base K2 is complete. If you are a very experienced builder and can successfully juggle instructions between two documents at once to determine the before and after changes and resolve any conflicts, then I would reconsider my advice above. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/14/2014 8:27 PM, Sean Michael Johnston wrote: I am building the K2 along with options KDSP2, KSB2, K160RX, K60XV, and I would like to avoid desoldering parts as much as possible. This appears to work very well. The KAT500 following the VFO on the K3 is a tremendous improvement. I like it. Would it be possible to make the ATU TUNE button work with the KPA500/KAT500 as well? There are air inlet vents over the PA area and an up-firing speaker on top. I use an inexpensive Costco 3-tierSeville Classics Bamboo + Steel shoe shelf. The K3 and keys are underneath and the P3 is about 1-1/2 above the K3, centered. This shelf is much more robust than its predecessor. It holds up my KPA500 without visible sag. The space under the lowest shelf has room for the K3 with 3/8 to spare with the tilt bail up. There are facing wood pieces about 3/4 on front and back of each shelf that stiffen the shelves. [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 new Beta firmware further observations
During field testing of the newest firmware for the K3, KPA500 and KAT500, after a good exercise of it I was asked to post my observations and I did in a previous email to the list. There have been a few tweaks and the latest field test versions have been released as public Beta versions. They are, K3 version 4.83, KPA500 version 1.37 and KAT500 version 1.58 available for download on the Elecraft website. I have had all of these loaded since they were released and have found no problems with them. I'm currently taking a break from the ARRL International DX contest where I'm operating Single Op, High Power Unassisted. (Normally I operate Low Power or QRP, but running 600 watts in this one with the KPA500 KAT500 to really test the new firmware.) Last night, I started out on 10 meters and worked down to 160 meters as the higher bands closed or I had worked all the DX stations I could hear with my meager antenna system (Cushcraft A3S@35 feet and Alpha Delta DX-LB 160/80/40 shortened dipole at about 33 feet). In several previous contests, (before any of the new firmware was even available for field test) I was very annoyed by the KAT500 sporadically initiating a tuning cycle during a contest exchange, mostly on 160 and 80 meters, but occasionally on the others as well. The first iteration of the Field Test FW I was allowed to test cured some but not all of the problems. The Elecraft FW Engineering programmers have been working diligently behind the scenes to correct the bugs I (and all the other testers) reported. Prior to the start of the contest last night, I made sure the KAT500's memories were loaded by training it at appropriate intervals on all the bands which wound up (for my antennas, yours may vary) being every 10 KHz on 160 meters, every 30 KHz on 80 meters, every 50 KHz on 40, and every 100 KHz on 20,15 and 10 meters. During the 8 hours I've operated so far, I've been all the way from the top end of the 10 meter CW band through the 15, 20, 40, 80 and 160 meter bands and NOT ONCE did the KAT500 initiate a tune and the tuner automatically followed the K3's VFO, switching at the necessary points and I never saw over a 1.1:1 SWR on ANY frequency I was on. I was not in contest run mode, sitting on a frequency calling CQ, but search pounce the entire operating time to really exercise the FW and I figure if it was going to fail, it would under those conditions. It did not. They finally think they have gotten all the bugs we reported, (bear in mind that with any software/firmware one never gets all the bugs out nor does the program ever do everything that everyone wanted it to). From the results of my operation in this contest I'm very pleased with the equipment and firmware as currently installed and barring any further minor tweaks that Wayne crew deem necessary to make, I think these versions could very well be ready to become full production versions. Certainly those of you who have been holding back because they are listed as Beta versions ought to re-consider installing them especially if you're still frustrated by random tuning cycles initiated by the ATU at points it shouldn't. The ability for the ATU to follow the K3's RX frequency and set the LC network to a memorized combination without having to transmit is a real plus! If you DO decide to install them, BE SURE to read the release notes and instructions contained in them to properly activate the integration between the K3 and KAT500 in the menu (don't ask me why I'm emphasizing this -- LOL!) Hi Guys, i've taken a Microkeyer II with his cables for K3 ( the one with the rear jack for mic ), i've been able to set-up everything for RTTY and CW, but i'm having big problems with phone and PSK31/JT65 . Any suggestion ? If i record an SSB buffer in the MKII with the computer mic and send it into the K3 the radio trasmits properly. I'm not a tecnician, so i do apologize if my question is very silly. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Build questions
If you aren't already familiar with it, get some solder wick. Radio Shack and anywhere they sell solder normally has it. It's just finely braided copper wire. Lay the end on a solder joint, heat it with the iron and it wicks up excess solder so you can easily remove components when you add the KSB2 etc. it will save a lot of wear and tear on the board. In fact, if you are removing them completely, it's safer to cut the component out, solder wick the remaining stubs and pull them out. A little cleanup with alcohol and you would never know a part had been soldered in there. Eric KE6US On 2/14/2014 10:07 PM, Sean Michael Johnston wrote: Thanks for the advice Johnny. Re: [Elecraft] K3 + MK II HELP Needed
What software are you using for digital modes - see the configuration examples in microHAM Router (Help | download documents) or on-line in the MK II area at www.microHAM-USA.com/support.html. When using MK II with a K3, the audio switching tab in microHAM Router should be set as follows: Voice/Digital settings selector ... should be set to Use Voice Settings. Computer generated audio fed to: should be Microphone jack, DVK control for Voice and Line input (rear) for FSK/DIGITAL. In SSB the K3 MENU:MIC SEL should be set to rP.L and MENU:MIC+LIN must be set to OFF. In DATA the K3 MENU:MIC SEL should be set to LInE In. Mic and line input gains are set separately with the Mic Gain control *while in SSB or DATA modes respectively*. Make sure you have followed the instructions for setting audio levels beginning on page 45 of the microKEYER II USERS MANUAL *EXACTLY*. Do not skip steps and do not try to do it the way you think it should be done. Only proceed to the next step when you have achieved the results described in the instructions. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] Can P3 Be On Top of K3?
Hi Phil, I had my P3 on top of my K3 for about a year until I got the SVGA card and added an additional monitor which is now suspended over the K3. There's no heat build up problem but if the K3 bale is up then I guess the P3 could slide a bit when pushing P3 buttons. I used some of that rubbery shelf liner and cut it out for the K3 speaker and vent holes. It kept the P3 from moving around unless I got very rough with the buttons. I suppose the internal speaker audio might be lessened slightly. I infrequently use the speaker and I didn't notice any problem when I did use it. 73, Mike K2MK Phil Wheeler-2 wrote Thursday I ordered my K3 and P3. All the images I see show the P3 on either the right or left side of the K3. But it seems having the P3 screen just above the display of the K3 would be an easier way to operate. Is there any reason not to locate the P3 that way (like vents in the K3, speaker, etc.)? 73, Phil w7ox (K2 #380, K1 #18) -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Can-P3-Be-On-Top-of-K3-tp7584281p7584297.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Using a SignaLink SL-1+ with a K3
I’ve used a SignaLink SL-1+ for years with an Icom 756PROIII and a laptop. After getting my K3 up and running I decided to try hooking up the SIgnaLink. I bought the cable that connects it to the line in and line out and PTT connectors of the K3. It seems to work OK except that there didn’t seem to be much audio getting into the K3’s line in. Yes, I turned off the mic input and turned on line in. Yes, I maxed the laptop’s audio out. Finally, So, as an experiment, I ran the laptop’s audio out into a pair of PC speakers and ran the headphone output of the PC speakers into the K3. Lots more audio out of the speakers and I can now get plenty into the K3. I suppose the problem was just that the K3 needs more juice into line in than my Icom needed. Oh, well. Live and learn. Re: [Elecraft] Using a SignaLink SL-1+ with a K3
Carl, Check your SignaLink configuration (see the SignaLink documentation) to be certain it is set for Line output rather than Mic level output - you should not have to set your soundcard level to the maximum. Note on the K3, you must drive the audio sufficiently to produce 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flickering if you are to be able to control power output level properly with the power knob. Normal Line levels can do that easily, but mic levels will not allow that to happen. Note carefully that while you may have been instructed with prior rigs to set for maximum power and adjust the audio for the power desired, that does *not* work with the K3, and will result in power creep. Adjust the audio as instructed in the manual (4 bars on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flickering) and adjust to the desired power level with the power knob. The K3 power control is different than most all other transceivers in that it uses a closed loop and will attempt to adjust the power level to that requested by the power knob regardless of the audio drive. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/15/2014 6:14 PM, Carl Yaffey wrote: I’ve used a SignaLink SL-1+ for years with an Icom 756PROIII and a laptop. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Mobile Mount
Hi Mike, The mount was never developed because there were too many good alternatives available elsewhere. This doesn't mean we won't market a mobile mount, but I would say it's not really in our plan at this time. One of the best alternatives I've found can be seen here: http://www.rammount.com/Portals/0/Skins/NationalProducts/images/un42.jpg You would want to buy just the cradle portion, which National Products sells under a separate model number. I've use ProClip.com for dash mount options in two vehicles, and they have a good range of vehicles supported in their product lineup. http://www.proclipusa.com/ 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 15 Feb 2014 17:51:28 -0800, you wrote: Was the mobile mount for the KX3 ever sold or is it on the development list? Re: [Elecraft] Problem with resistance check list with k1 kit
Please explain what you mean by getting only a couple resistance measurements Does that mean that only a couple are correct? Or does it mean that you can only accomplish a couple resistance measurements? A resistance measurement of zero is a valid measurement, and generally indicates a short unless the expected resistance is zero. A resistance measurement greater than the set range of your ohmmeter may also be valid, just increase the ohmmeter range to obtain a measurement. Be aware of the sign in the expected measurement - that means 'greater than'. A measurement considerably greater than that value is OK. A lot depends on your particular ohmmeter. Consult the meter's instructions to see how it displays values greater than the set range. What I am saying is that you may or may not have a problem, but you did not convey enough information to make a valid decision. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/15/2014 9:46 PM, Andrew Bennett wrote: I am building the k1 kit and am getting only a couple resistance measurements on the resistance check stage of the rf board part 1 on page 29. Flawless performance from 5 a.m. this morning right through 10 p.m. this evening when I shut down for the night. I'd have done much better but my ancient Ham-M rotator shot craps with the beam pointed dead South! The only saving grace was propagation. It was so long I was even hearing my own echo's and all signals from the far North and South were growly almost like Auroral propagation sounds on six meters.
