It's called "littering" and it is in fact unlawful.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-01-07 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

I got a very strange look from a Gray Jay on Friday.  I was getting
ready to do the dishes so gave them bits of this and that for a treat.
A little popcorn, some oatmeal, a little rice, a heel of bread, and some
beans.  The beans were what gained me the look.  I had made them with
three fresh, sliced jalapeños. There is just no accounting for tastes :)

Twenty meters was long again.  As I was looking for an open
frequency I heard W1AET very well from Georgia.  There was also a lot of
noise on it.  Forty meters only had a few "whistlers" pass through but
was fairly quiet in comparison.

   On 17049.5 kHz at 2300z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

AB9V - Mike - IN

K6XK - Roy - IA

K4JPN - Steve - GA

   On 7044.5 kHz at 0100z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

K7TV - Erik - AZ

From all the weather reports I received it appears the cold snap is
moving out of the Midwest and South.  Folks in the Northeast are still
rather chilly.  Makes this a good time of year to sit next to the fire
in front of your Elecraft rig working a new one.

   Until next week 73,

   Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] Strange thing.

2018-01-07 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
Have you been operating the K3S using CAT control from an application or
logging program?   I've found when terminating some programs or the
computer or radio, during the shut down sequence, things change.
Otherwise, values are not as you normally use them or as you left them
the previous night.

I always first close the application, turn off the radio, turn off the
power supply, and shut down the computer.  My start up procedure is just
the  opposite.  Computer on, power supply on, radio on, open the
application.

If the tree is in your yard, remove the device and saw it open.
However, if the tree is NOT in your yard, remove the device and saw it
open.

Eventually somebody will come looking for it, possibly accompanied by
the local sheriff.

[Elecraft] Thanks to all for many great suggestions about a PTT Switch

2018-01-07 Thread Dauer, Edward
Following Kevin Stover’s and Don Wilhelm’s advice – a normally open push button
mounted in a film can or in a Sharpie cap respectively -- I have settled on
fitting a button switch into a tennis ball . . . .

If I drop it, it might come right back
With their usual vile green color it’ll be hard to lose track
of on the operating desk
Squeezing the ball in between button presses would be good hand
exercise
With a little dexterity and the right placement of the right
size button it could be used as either a hand switch or a foot switch
It would give the operator and the dog something to do when the band
goes dead

And, the housing of the switch would be free --

I live about three blocks from a municipal tennis court. Suitable candidates
for a PTT switch body abound on the surrounding sidewalks. I guess the players
around here really aren’t very good.

Cheers,

Ted, KN1CBR

Re: [Elecraft] PTT switch for K3

2018-01-07 Thread Brian Hunt
I use my old J-38 straight key wired to a RCA plug that goes into the PTT jack
on the rear of the K3. The advantage is that you don't have to pick it up to
use it or put it down to type. Easy to wire up too. Buy an audio cable, lop off
one connector, dress the leads out and connect them to the key binding posts.

BTW, have you considered using VOX in the contest? Completely hands free.

I rolled my own using a small microswitch from my junk box. No larger than a couple of sugar cubes.  A little shrink tubing to cover exposed terminals.  Cost almost nothing and works better than any other I have used.  Force to operate is small so no fatigue.

You might consider ED913 or E913 which are less expensive than the
ED903.

Ed;

It is easier than fabricating switch bodies. Mouser has several candidates -
look at their 502-ED903. It is a nice hand-held switch in a comfortable case,
costing about $12. Add wire and appropriate plug (mine has a phono plug for the
K3) and you can build a very nice PTT switch for less than $20.

They also have a new assembly with cable attached for a bit more - something
like $160. I don;’t recommend that…

Re: [Elecraft] PTT switch for K3

2018-01-07 Thread Dauer, Edward
Thanks, Don. At this very moment I am scanning everything in my office for a
suitable candidate . . .

I just thought of it – a tennis ball! Also useful for stress relief when
waiting for a nitch in a pileup . . .

If the pushbutton does not stay with friction, glue it in with E6000
cement, or epoxy or whatever works to keep it in place.

If you don't have such materials available, the cost is much smaller
than buying a commercial pushbutton PTT switch. The switch and 1/4 inch
plug can be found at Mouser - choose economy shipping unless you have
other parts to order.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT switch for K3

2018-01-07 Thread Jack Brindle
Ed;

[Elecraft] Strange thing.

2018-01-07 Thread Mal Speer
I strange thing happened to my K3s this morning. Both the mic gain and
compression were set to 0. After trying to get into a net, and not being
heard, I discovered the problem. I did not touch any settings from the last
time I used the rig, which was yesterday afternoon.

Has anyone had this problem?

I have tried hand switches and always found the need to use that hand also,
Darn.  So I built up a simple foot switch with a "hinge"  Yes a door hinge and
put a micro switch on the bottom with a simple flexible cable about 10' long to
the radio.  KISS and not bulky.

I rolled my own using a small microswitch from my junk box. No larger than a
couple of sugar cubes.  A little shrink tubing to cover exposed terminals.
Cost almost nothing and works better than any other I have used.  Force to
operate is small so no fatigue.

I wired up my own using this hand switch.

I think Heil sells a hand PTT switch.

Foot switches are pretty popular, too. I don’t have one, but I’ve seen
recommendations on this list.
