I also agree with Dave and Wes.
Keeping up with current resale values is useful to me.

I'm with Dave on this one. I see guys setting up complicated email filters to
sort messages into different folders, etc, I just look at the subject and,
more often that not, hit the delete key.

Since I have a K3 in a box under the desk that I should be selling I'm
interested in what the market is too. Leave well enough alone.

Re: [Elecraft] A Good Headset For A K3

2023-08-06 Thread AB2E Darrell
I'm seeing great choices here so far. I will add the Inrad W1 headset to the
mix.
To an extent, a casual operator may be fine with a certain headset, but a
contester may prefer something a little different.
I am mostly a contester, and having big ears, I am grateful that the W1 cups
are wide and deep, fully covering my ears without putting pressure on them.
This allows for many hours wearing them in a contest, and still being
comfortable.

I also have a pair of Bose QC25's, and highly recommend these, especially if
you are in a high noise or noisy amp fan environment.
These are very comfortable as well, cups not quite as large as the W1 but still
fine.
Being the noise-cancelling design, They literally neutralize all extraneous
noise, and try them on a flight, they are truly amazing. I keep them on during
a flight if I want to nap, it makes it totally quiet.

you. The SB-45 was so uncomfortable on my head that I wrote a blog post about

[Elecraft] WTB/trade for K3(S) CW filters

2023-08-01 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi all,
Just picked up a K3 w/upgraded S synths, but the op was mostly SSB.
I want to pick up some CW filters, preferably matched pairs for main & sub.
500/400/200.
Here is the current lineup.

Main receiver roofing filters 13 kHz, 6 kHz, 2.70 kHz matched pair, 1.8 kHz,
1.50 kHz
Subreceiver roofing filter ,,2.70 kHz matched pair
This K3 has the 2m xvtr, so the 13Khz filter was needed for FM. I will likely
remove the 13Khz, and the 6Khz, along with the 2m xvtr.
If any of you are SSB ops and happened to have acquired a K3 or K3S with all CW
filters, I would be glad to swap.

Email me offlist with what you have, or what you want to trade.

Also looking for a pair of P3 side panels to replace the scratched ones on the
P3 that came w/ the package.

13 seconds of transmit, 17 seconds of receive = 43% duty cycle.

I use (rarely) less than 100 watts, all the way up to band legal limit.
With a K3, don't worry about it. IF the cooling become inadequate due
to local environment, it'll reduce output to protect itself.

[Elecraft] question K3 digital duty cycle power FT8

2023-05-21 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi all,
I'm leaving for VP9 on Wed, and taking my trusty K3.
A little time will be devoted to FT8 so my question is what is the duty cycle
for running FT8 on K3?
I've read a couple old posts about PSK, so I'm wondering what the group is
doing.
How much power out are you running the K3 on FT8 without overheating etc?

[Elecraft] KRC2 Band Decoder question

2023-03-07 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi all,
I picked up a KRC2 Band Decoder.
Are there any issues using this with a K3?
Does the stock DB9 cable to the rig need to be rewired for the K3?
I want to hook it up for FD with a bandpass filter set.
If anyone is using it with a K3 please email offlist.

Thanks and 73,
Darrell AB2E

Hello all,
I bought this locally about 3yrs ago.
Works like a K-Pod.
$75 + $10 shipping
Has it's own COM port builtin, and allows for sharing (so you only need a
single com port for it to work fully).

Reason for selling is I bought a K-Pod from the list last year, and I'm
cleaning the shack.

OK thanks Mark, looks like a little over a year backlog for a new guy on the

Hi all,
I just got on the list for a K4D, and it says I'm Group 3.
No problem, but just wondering what the actual order date was of someone who
just received a K4D recently?
I see they've emailed K4D listees through 5/12/21, but how far behind that date
are they actually shipping?

Thanks in advance and 73 to all,

Re: [Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-20 Thread AB2E Darrell
Eric,
I'm skeptical. Did you receive anything in writing or see a letter from Comcast
stating this?
It sounds more like the Comcast tech taking it on himself to say you are being
banned.
I would call their customer service and check the status of your account, get
something in writing if it's true, then contact your state authority that
regulates telecoms, and file a complaint.
I've never heard of anyone being banned as a customer by Comcast.

Anyone telling you the mere presence of an antenna is the source of problem
is someone who has absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

Ask them for a list of the dates, times, and durations of some of the area
wide outages and compare that information against your log book to see if
there is any correlation.

It is very likely there are other hams in your area. It could be someone
else causing the problem who may not be an Xfinity customer. If any ham
radio, or other radio transmissions, are causing their systems problems it
shows they haven't properly protected their equipment from stray RF and/or
they have a problem with an installation somewhere.

Welcome to the world of "just in time" inventory meets off shore
production. Then couple that with a Chinese Communist Party that
makes sure that Chinese companies get their orders filled before
the rest of the world. Then don't forget that there are not enough
shipping containers to accommodate all the freight demands.

International commerce is reaping the rewards of concentrating
manufacturing in China while stripping the US & Canada (and to a
lesser extent, Europe) of much of their manufacturing base.

It's not just chips but pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics and
even consumer staples. The trend will only get worse if the current
administration has its way and increases taxes on business and capital
by 50%.

I suppose the question is why not rebuild it if the capability (or an upgraded
capability) remains of consequential value to the scientific community and
there is no existing capability that can be cobbled together elsewhere to match
it. I don’t know what it would cost, but consider that one Virginia-class
submarine costs well over $3B. We build those, even if it is in small numbers.
It’s a matter of priorities … and pretty small $$ in the big picture.

Re: [Elecraft] Unexpected K-POD frequency excursions

2019-11-24 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi Peter,
Just an idea. Does the ipod generate a virtual serial port?
Do you have a bluetooth mouse?

Not quite my setup but I've recently had trouble with a usb serial cable
randomly interacting with the Microsoft bluetooth mouse and the serial cable
becomes intermittent. The mouse jumps randomly but also makes the serial cable
behave strangely. I'm wondering if a similar thing is occurring to you. My
solution was to uninstall the mouse from device manager, shut down and
restart...win10 pro installs a fresh driver for the mouse.

Subject: [Elecraft] Unexpected K-POD frequency excursions

Hi all,
In CQWW this weekend I ran across a problem that's been plaguing me in
previous contests too. With the K-pod connected to the radio (K3s) using the
supplied cable I'm finding that the main VFO QSYs down about 100-200 Hz on a
random basis. I tried loading the flat cable up with Mix 31 ferrites to no
effect. I haven't thoroughly tested this on all bands, but it definitely
occurred on 20 through 160. It was not a regular occurrence; maybe every 2-3
minutes it would happen. When I engage the VFO lock on the front panel of
the radio it stops doing it.

I has also been know to shut the radio off once every few days when I touch
the K-pod, which I'm attributing to static electricity. While I love the
functionality of my K-pod, I had to take it offline due to the frequency
excursions. I'd like to get a fix for this if at all possible. Suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] SS Amp

2019-01-16 Thread AB2E Darrell
Greetings all,
Depends on your use, if you plan to travel and operate on an island etc, then
hands down the SPE 1.5K or 1.3k.
Looks like most on the list are more concerned for a home amp, and kpa1500 is
obviously a great choice too. I just received my SPE 1.5K a couple weeks ago,
and prior to that had the 1.3 for 3 yrs. For travel the spe means several less
boxes to take...virtually self-contained with the 4 autoselect antenna ports,
legal limit ATU, and 2 rig inputs, and autoselect power supply ( will detect
120v or 240v like a laptop does).
I have an Acom 2000a also in service at home.
All of these amps work great with my k3, like someone else mentioned dont
forget to go to each band and lower power if you have low drive 1.3spe (the
1.5k takes regular drive (25 to 30w on mine).

- The KPA1500 has two LDMOS devices vs one in the SPE.
- The 1500 has better IMD specs and better duty cycle than the SPE.
- The KPA1500 has a separate power supply that can be located under the desk.
- KPA1500 has Ethernet remote capability.

Re: [Elecraft] Yama CM-500 Replacement

2019-01-11 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi all,
I still have a CM-500 sitting here but rarely use it now.
Just before CQWW CW in Nov I purchased an Inrad W1 headset. Outstanding
performance, and 0 fatigue on your ears. While it doesn't claim to be a noise
cancelling headset, with the high kerosene heater noise in my unheated garage
shack, it did seem to lower the noise considerably.
For those in noisy environments, I recommend the Bose QC35 or QC25. These are
true noise cancelling headphones and are pricy (I was fortunate to get mine
free with United Airlines mileage that was expiring). I also have a Heil Proset
which I like, but ears are sore after a 48hr contest.

I've used all of these on the K3 and/or Icom 7700,7800, and 756 Pro III.

73 and HNY.

Just curious what other users of the KPA-1500 see as the efficiency
reported by the KPA-1500 utility app.

The following efficiencies are being report by my KPA-1500 utility app
by band into a dummy load running 40 watts input and 1500 watts output:

80M CW: 61%
80M SSB: 64%
40M CW: 54%
40M SSB: 59%
20M CW: 52%
20M SSB: 52%
17M CW: 55%
15M CW: 64%
15M SSB: 62%
12M CW: 68%
10M CW: 56%
10M SSB: 58%

Does this compare favorably with other KPA-1500 owners?

Re: [Elecraft] K3S and Winkeyer

2018-02-21 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hi Bill,

I'd say it just comes down to personal preference. I'm primarily a contester
and dxer.

I sometimes use the builtin keyers in the K3 and the Icom IC-7800.

However, I do like and have several Winkeyers. They interface easily in N1MM+
on their own serial port. The speed can be controlled either from the Winkeyer
speed pot or from the N1MM+ program with a mouse to change the speed.

I have the standalone Winkeyer USB, also 2 of my Rig Expert interfaces have
builtin Winkeyers.

To me I like the stability and accuracy of the Winkeyer. It's easy to adjust
the speed up or down 2wpm at a time.

So boils down to personal preference and I have nothing bad to say about the
builtin keyers.

The non-US model, or the modified US model only needs 10w to drive the 1.3 to

1200-1400w out all other bands..
I also have an ic7800 for rig 2 and that drives the 1.3 to fiI'll output with

I have just set up an Expert 1.3K-FA amplifier with my K3 (with
most of the upgrades to become a K3S). My question is, when I
drive it with 10W set on the K3 output power, it shows a drive
level of about 30W and and output level of 950W. What is going on?

Details: The two boxes are connected with about 6' of RG-58 for
the RF and a custom cable made by KC5PCB, Dan Tassell for the
rest of the signals. The output is into a dummy load, although
very similar measurements occur with my trapped vertical
antenna. Tests were in the CW portion of the 20M band.

The Amp is powered from a dedicated 120V circuit which shows a 7
volt drop at 12.7A during CW key down transmission. (Voltage is
measured by a Fluke 87 DVM and current by a Kill-A-Watt PA4400.)
An external YS-60 power meter shows 800W, which seems reasonable
agreement given the accuracy of RF power measurements.

Why does the K3 show 10W and the amp show 30W? Is there
something screwy here, or is it normal?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 comments on Koss SB45 headsets

2015-12-28 Thread AB2E Darrell
I'll share with the group a very positive experience with an excellent set of
headphones I've not seen reviewed for radio before - Sennheiser HD280 Pro,
online most places for $99. OK, it's not the cheapest set out there like the
two mentioned here, Koss SB-45 and Yamaha CM-500 (I too have the CM-500, the
response is nice and crisp but the Sennheiser is superior and more comfortable
than the Yamaha), but it is extremely high quality from a famous EU maker. I
actually bought the Sennheiser for another use in the shack (digitizing old
reel to reel audio tapes and I needed a studio reference source). These phones
are terrific, with 32db of isolation. The over-the-ear cushions are very deep -
a little over an inch - and I operated a whole contest weekend with them at the
CQWW CW at VE3RZ's M2 with my K3 and SPE Expert 1.3K-FA. In SS CW, I copied
many west coast CW, even qrp with these phones. Very comfortable on the ears,
and very quiet - no outside noise. These are rated as recording studio quality
phones. The cable is 10ft long, and the weight is only .49lbs. It comes with a
1/8in plug but includes a 1/4 in adapter. Here's a link with the details for
anyone interested
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HD280Pro?adpos=1t1=83049424441=c=b=g=CKjIwJXe_8kCFdQYHwodrokJWQ

I have no financial interest in anyone selling them, just love the product.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 comments on Koss SB45 headsets

It's quite a coincidence that you asked about the Koss SB-45, because I just
got one for Christmas! Mine is the one with 3.5mm connectors, not the USB
version. I also have a CM-500.

I was going to post a review here after wearing the SB-45 all next weekend in
the RTTY Roundup, but here are my first impressions.

The microphone quality is fine. The SB-45 needed about 3 dB more boost in TX
EQ #4 to sound like the CM-500. The mic is an electret. Do not confuse this
unit with the SB-40, which has a dynamic mic, and apparently doesn’t sound so
good.

The audio out of the headphones is also fine, just as good and loud and
distortion-free as the CM-500, at least for communications use. I haven't
tried either headset on music.

I wore them for 1.5 hours on a long-winded net this morning, and they were
totally comfortable over that time period. I do wear eyeglasses. People on
the net said the audio sounded just like the CM-500. I'll give a better
long-term comfort report after the RTTY Roundup.

The cord is nice and long, and the mic and headphone wires can be separated
easily to go to different places, after cutting a little rubber thingie that
keeps them together. My mic goes to the back of a computer on the floor, and
my headphones go to an SO2R box on the table.

The SB45 is around $25 on Amazon, compared to $55 for the CM-500.

I think this headset is going to be a keeper, but I’ll give a long term comfort
report next week.

Seasons greetings one and all.

Has anyone used/using the Koss SB45 headsets on their K3?

I have the CM-500 and I am on my second set but again the padding is
starting to deteriorate so before they look too ratty, figured I would get
a backup and as the CM500 are not available in VK but the Koss SB45 are, I
would appreciate any comments/advice the list may offer.

Just to let you all know, I love my Yamaha cm500 BUT, shipping cost from
the US is really quite ridiculous these days and the AUD has fallen off a
cliff and the parachute failed to open...:-)

The Koss SB45 are $69.00 AUD, free shipping. I like free...:-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3/N1MM, freq jumps etc in CQ WW CW

2015-12-04 Thread AB2E Darrell
Wayne,
I had not known of this issue previously (having just acquired my K3 in April),
but can confirm the same behavior this past weekend in CQWW CW as reported by
Ignacy and I was using version 5.14.

It was intermittent and I could not pin down the problem during the contest,
but the PTT would hang on returning to receive, sometimes 3 or 4 seconds. Other
times, normal return to RX.

Setup this past weekend:
K3/ SPE Expert 1.3K-FA
N1MM+ Logger

Thanks and 73,
Darrell AB2E

I though we had fixed this for all remaining cases in rev. 4.55, but I'll
re-list it.

[Elecraft] comparisons of K3 control software

2015-04-10 Thread AB2E Darrell
I wonder if anyone has tried either N4PY's Pegasus program for controlling the
K3, or TRX-Manager? It seems many of the K3's menu items can be controlled from
within the programs. I have positive experience with N4PY for Icom radios, so
have a good idea of what to expect for the K3. TRX-Manager appears to offer a
slick interface that's a copy of the K3 front panel. I would like to hear your
experiences with either program.

Contact me off-list at a...@hotmail.com.

Thanks and 73,
Darrell AB2E

[Elecraft] Question K3 ALC w/SPE Expert 1.3K-FA amp

2015-04-02 Thread AB2E Darrell
Hello all,
I am the proud new owner of a new K3. I am also the proud new owner of
an SPE Expert 1.3K-FA solid state amp, and I have a question for the group
regarding interfacing the K3 to the amp.

My current setup is using my Icom 756 Pro III with the SPE Expert 1.3K-FA. The
recommended setup for Icom was to connect both the Relay and ALC cables between
the rig and amp. This is because the software in the amp automatically reduces
the power in the rig to the best output level for the amp (on the amp LOW=500W
out= 3W drive, MID= 1000W out= 6W drive, HIGH = 1500W out = 9W drive). It works
flawlessly. Actually, I could leave the power on the Pro III untouched, and the
amp reduces the power accordingly.

My question for the group is, is there a way to allow the K3's output to be
controlled by the amp? I see the note on p27 about not using an amp to control
the K3's output, but wonder if there is a safe way to do it. For instance,
could the K3 be set to say 15W out on all bands via the menu, then allow the
amp to control the output via ALC for optimum drive?

Any info and comments appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Question K3 ALC w/SPE Expert 1.3K-FA amp

2015-04-02 Thread AB2E Darrell
Guy,
Thanks for the tip, and a couple others who say the same thing.
I'll forget using ALC and use the internal power levels per band for driving
the amp.

Thanks all and 73,
Darrell AB2E

Do not use ALC to throttle K3 power levels. Regardless of what amp
manufacturers say, ALC used in that fashion is one of the worst generators of
splatter and key clicks around. They say that to keep amps from being blown up
by severe overdrive and returned under warranty.
Just don't connect it. Power levels are remembered by band/mode/ant on your K3
and you can set power output for safe clean rated operation of your amp.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Heathkit Catalogs

2011-09-12 Thread AB2E Darrell

Interesting info Dave. The computer on the 1970s Voyager space probe had a
whopping 68K of memory total! And that was multitasking.

Very cool scanning through the 1958 catalog. I had forgotten that they had
that “analog computer” as a kit, even back that far. Consider this, though.
If you get one of those musical birthday cards in the mail, open it up, enjoy
the message (maybe even a personal message added), then toss it in the trash
can at some point. When you do that, you have thrown away a bunch more
computing power than that Heath analog computer had! In fact, I read once
that such an act effectively tosses away more computing power than what
 existed in the late 40’s!

[Elecraft] K3 cable w/ARI500/ALS1300

2010-11-05 Thread AB2E Darrell

Greetings all,
I do not yet have a K3 but monitor the list.
I'm trying to help Dale N3BNA, who is currently operating from CX6VM.
He is trying to get the ARI500/ALS1300 to work with the K3. It required making
a cable with numerous resistors, and currently it is not working except for
15m.

Is anyone currently using this combination, K3 / ARI500/ ALS1300? If so, was
there a commercially made cable that you acquired that allows it to work with
the K3? If so, where?
The ARI500 is the Ameritron interface which picks up the band data info and
auto-changes the amp.
