RE: [Elecraft] OT: math question
I ran into a brain-teaser once, that had me baffled for hours (I won't say how many). Finally, I called my sister, the Rocket Scientist (actually, we're not _Rocket_ scientists - That's a quote from her husband) and asked her. She and Paul spent a few minutes on the problem, figured it out, but it was such a trivial answer they threw it away. Since I'd spent so long on the Question, I gave her about a week and then I called back. Luckily they'd not taken out the trash, so she easily found their notes and read them to me. I won't spoil it for you 'crafters. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 Problem: An alley has a 20-foot ladder across it, in the left lower corner and leaning on the right wall. There also is a 30-foot ladder, from the right lower corner leaning on the left wall. The laders cross at 10 feet high. How wide is the alley? Usual conventions: alley is all right angles, ladders have no thickness nor bends, blah blah blah... This should make some juices flow out there. Just simple geometry, or is it? PS: Iteration is cheating. RE: FW: [Elecraft] K2 phase noise
Fraser said: I don't expect the K2 to have lab grade performance, nor to outperform high price rigs. Dan said: I don't know about your expectations, but mine are quite high. I _DO_ expect my K2 to outperform high price rigs. Fraser said: Hi Dan, well in many respects the K2 does outperform other rigs, but unfortunately in terms of transmitted phase noise it does not. This is not an issue at low power, for which I think the K2 was originally designed, but becomes noticeable when the K2 is used to drive an external linear. My findings have been backed up by off reflector replies from others. I'm very impressed with the K2 on receive. Dan said: Well, the K2 is the most expensive and best rig I've ever owned. My previous rig, an Astro-Swan Cubic 103, cost $600 in 1980, and the K2 blew it away (to eBay, of course). Fraser replied: FB Dan, I remember I used to dream of having a 103, one of the few QSK rigs around at that time. I'll be really happy if/when i can use my K2 on QRO. Meanwhile it's a great /P rig. Finally, Dan sez: As long as we are both happy. One of the reasons I got the K2, was that the ole Cubic almost never put out over 20 W. I just didn't ever need to twist up the wick. It did just fine at about 9 o'clock. One time, I forgot to twist it at all - It was fully CCW - And I got 339 from a JA on 750 mW. Cool! I called Ten Tec thinking modern DSP would work wonders, and they sent me a Jupiter. When I called back for the RMA, the tech that got THAT call said, Of course the Jupiter doesn't have better ears than your Cubic. Gaaghhh. The K2 has been wonderful, and I NEVER turn it above 5W (well, hardly everg). Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 ps: I think I'll go back to Top-Posting, flames or not. Re: [Elecraft] Ultimatic Keying.
The difference between iambic and Ultimatic keying is that when you hold down both paddles, the Ultimatic keyer sends a series of elements corresponding to the last paddle closed instead of sending alternate dits and dashes as an iambic keyer would. For example, the sequence L on, R on would cause an iambic keyer to send di-dah-di-dah. An Ultimatic keyer would, however, send di-dah-dah-dah. If you count the number of paddle movements, you can see where this might be advantageous. There's no advantage when sending a K. The sequence is R on, L on, L off, R off for both iambic and Ultimatic keyers. Take X, however. When using iambic keying, it's R on, R off, L on, L off, R on, R off. With Ultimatic keying, the number of paddle movements is the same as for the iambic - R on, L on, L off, R off. - a savings of two paddle movements. You just hold down the left paddle a little longer for the X then for the K. Another keyer that now supports Ultimatic keying is the N0XAS PicoKeyer (www.hamgadgets.com). It's only $18, and fits in a mini Altoids tin. I have no affiliation with the company; I just think it's a cool little keyer. 73! Dan KB6NU --- President, ARROW Comm. Assn. Re: [Elecraft] Calibration Standard
Well, I received my 5 volt calibration standard from Joe Geller at gellerlabs.com today. I upgraded to the KQ chip. The papers with it shows that it is calibrated to +/- 10 microvolts. On a 5 volt scale, that is +/- 2ppm. The initial calibration is then +/- 0.0002%! I connected it to my Alinco DM-330MV switching power supply locked at 13.8 volts. I then tested my Sears Craftsman 82002 autoranging multimeter. It displayed 5.04 volts. That is an error of 4 parts in 500, or 8 parts in 1000, or 0.8%. Next, I tested my HP 3466A bench-top DMM. It displayed 5.000 volts both autoranging and with the range manually set. I bought the HP meter used off of EBay for the purpose of aligning my K2. The K2 has always seemed to be dead on (or spot on as our British friends say), and I guess I now know why! The calibration standard from Joe Geller is a beautiful piece of work. However, I just don't have time to scratch-build right now. Out of curiosity, I did an EBay search for voltage reference standard and found a guy named Joe Geller at gellerlabs.com. He sells an assembled calibrator that is NIST traceable when delivered. They start at about $25.00 and go up, but all are under $100. They are available in 2.5, 5, and 10 volt models. If I remember correctly, his claim for accuracy is about 0.1%. For a few dollars more, he will use a chip that doubles that accuracy. I ordered the basic model to test and/or calibrate my used HP 3466A. I will put out a report on how I like it when it gets here! Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer Opinions?
I have the Autek antenna analyzer and think it's a good deal for the price. A couple guys in our club have the MFJ analyzers, so I've had a chance to compare. The MFJ display has more information on it, so it's easier to use. I like the analog meter on the MFJ; it lets you more quickly find an antenna's resonant frequency. BUT, the unit is bigger than the Autek, and it seems to go through batteries a lot faster than my Autek. The Autek is cheaper, too. I've seen the AEA units, too. They are much fancier, but as you say, they cost a lot more. If you were putting up antennas every day, you'd probably want the AEA, but since you probably are not... Having said all that, I just took another look at the micro908. WOW! It's very cool. If I were in the market right now, I think I'd go with this instrument. One big reason is the computer control. Neither the MFJ or Autek analyzers have this feature. You could do a lot of cool things with this feature. As an aside, I swapped e-mail with the Autek guy after I purchased my analyzer. Since it's obvious processor-controlled, I asked him about putting some kind of computer interface on it. He answered that nobody would pay extra for that feature. Bleah. 73! Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer Opinions?
I can attest that this is also a problem with the Autek. I was using my Autek analyzer to tune an antenna at a multi-op contest station that our club was setting up. As I was tuning the antenna, every once in a while, the readings would just go crazy. I started thinking that my meter was beginning to fail until I noticed that the meter would start acting funny whenever one of the other stations was transmitting! :) Everyone got a good laugh out of it. 73! I was tweaking up my Band Pass filters the other day, and noticed something weird. If you advance the Power Requested knob fully clockwise, it reads 15.2 watts on all bands except 12 meters. For 24 megacyccles per second, it shows 10.0 watts. The K2 (#2456 + A:B, etc.) produces over 10 watts (but not 15.2!) everywhere below 24kkcps, but this behavior of the POUT display has me baffled. Since I always run 5 watts anyhow, I don't see any operational issue, but I sure am curious. Also, power seems a bit low on 10 (and maybe 12) meters, and current a bit high on 160 - I'd not noticed due to the above mentioned self-imposed 5 watt limit. Any ideas out there? [Elecraft] Attenuation at narrow bandwidths NOT!
-Original Message- From: W3FPR - Don Wilhelm [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 3:50 PM To: Dan Barker Subject: Re: Discrete Passband Tuning Revisited Dan, I must disagree - you must have a very good K2 CW filter - don't change it. I won't. There ARE K2s that have signifigant attentuation at bandwidths more narrow than 200 Hz. One of mine is good to 150 Hz and the other is good only to 180 Hz. I have built and worked on many K2s, and they are all a bit different in the filter attenuation aspect - depends on the precise crystal mix, component tolerances, construction techniques, etc. Interesting, let's see. See below. 73, Don W3FPR Don, you got me thinking. Why would you say something like that? My K2 filters are EXCELLENT! But, I decided to test it out to prove my belief. Test Setup: Freq 7.040. Mode CW Normal. Set FL4 width to 0.00 (FL4 has the BFO for a reasonable left skirt. I didn't want to change frequency, just bandwidth. Broadband noise source on ANT2, Antenna selector to ANT2. Spectrogram on Fixed Audio Out (top of AF pot). Peak Hold on, wait for the graph to fill in. Measure the peak, and the amplitude of the -6db points for bandwidth calculation. Note: BWs above 1,200 hz have significant ripple (not unexpected). However these bandwidths are not particularly useful to me. I measured the peak as above, and measured the -6db points on the far right hump. The ripple is at most 10db, but I'd measure the -6db point of the next hump. Not that it matters anyhow at 2.49! I imagine anyone wanting really wide CW reception is going to use OP1 anyway. Repeat measurements with FL4 bandwidth 0.10 (or more) higher. After 2.49, use OP1. Finally, return FL4 bw to operating BW, in my case, 0.20. Verify trace is still centered on my sidetone (it was). Raw data available at ftp://ftp.visioncomm.com/k2filter.xls, anonymous, your email address, bin, get. As these numbers appear to powerfully demonstrate the extremely excellent job done by the designers, I'll be happy to compare notes with any K2 owner with less stellar performance. EVERY K2s filter plots should look this good. I'm not sure what to compare tho, to find a discrepancyg. Wayne? Eric? Ideas?. As I normally SP with the 0.90, and work heavy QRM at 0.20, the ZERO db attenuation is what I notice. If I lose AF volume with FL4, then I AM OFF FREQ. It's not my filterg. I'm not sure that's right. Every time I've seen much attenuation, I've not been on the right freq. If you look at the height of the peak in Spectrogram, it doesn't drop much as you cycle through the widths. A primative zero-beat was to go to 100Hz bw, and peak the volume. Or, a filter center not near the input pitch will attenuate (by design) greatly. RE: [Elecraft] Highest power supply voltage for K2?
I've always done the following to see if I was going to toast something. Maybe someone can tell me the error of may ways (the last thing I did this on was a $1,400 Video Camera - if the method is dangerous, I'll stop!). I hook the 6V Camera up to a 6V power supply (actually a variable voltage PS) through an ammeter. I slowly advance the voltage (toward the 9.6V target of the high-capacity batteries stolen from my Electric Zagi model airplane). I figure if the current goes up, I'm going to cook something. If the current decreases, then the power being dissipated is roughly constant so I'm not cooking anything. If I'm WAY off in left field, let me know. I'll spring for the $60 camera batteries that don't last worth a poop instead of the [already on hand] airplane batteries that hold up nicely. If I'm NOT off in left field, this is a nice way to check out a circuit without a diagram or any disassembly/tracing. FW: [Elecraft] Picked up this partially built K2
I've seen a lot of assistance for this thread that starts out with: The best way to proceed with an uncompleted project is to first check that all components have been inserted in the correct location. Open the manual to the parts listing and check each installed part for the correct value. or some such wisdom. That is an EXCELLENT second step. The FIRST step, is go to the web, download the manual in PDF format (so you can search on it) and get the latest errata. So the FIRST STEP is to HAND-WRITE THE ERRATA INTO THE MANUAL ITSELF IN PLACE, and then proceed with check that all components have been inserted in the correct location. Wouldn't you feel silly removing the wrong part because of the manual, only to find in troubleshooting that the part had been replaced (or even removed - C180 on the RF board is no longer used) in a note you didn't have! hth Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. FW: [Elecraft] Both internal and external keyer
Yes, and it's in the book (even the early ones). Set Menu INP to PDLr (or PDLn if you are one of those oddball, right-handed folks). Set Menu IAB to B (or A if you are one of thoseg). Set Menu INP to ADET On (default). Now, if the dit paddle closes, the K2 sends dits. If the dah paddle closes, the K2 sends dahs. If they close simultaneously, the K2 sends CW as long as they are closed. Get a mini-plug stereo splitter from RatShack or build a pigtail Y so you can plug in two (or three?) devices. The paddles are wired normally. The straight-key or computer needs to pull on BOTH dit and dah lines. Use a wired-and from 2 diodes (Pg 95 in the Rev F manual). I was able to fit the diodes in the mini plug itself. Now, I just plug in the paddles, key or both and the K2 figures out the rest. Some high-speed squeeze keyers occasionally have troubles with the K2 thinking hand key and the op is just a tad early on one of the paddles. I've not heard of this happening below 35wpm and I never run that speed. The ADET Off is the only fix for that if you have such worries (Kinda wish I did have those troublesg). I always leave the straight key plugged in. If someone requests a QRS or is already below 15 wpm, I keep my fist in practice by using the Straight-key (I can't make it send readable code faster than 14 wpm). Another note, for SK or Paddles. If you hook up a CW reader (I use CWGet) and let it copy your sending, you will be in for a surprise. I discovered there is almost NEVER a space between DE and WG4S. Well, now there is. Sending 01234567890 on the straight key with no extra spaces was a good exercise too! Took a while to get that right (actually, it took a while on the paddles too!). I have needed 11 states for the last two years, and have been unable to add a single one even though I have really tried. Yesterday, I remembered the SS fairly late in the afternoon (about 1600 EST), and thought that might be an excellent way to add a state or two. Even with a long dinner break, I was able to pick up 7 of those 11 stations before the SS ended! All QRP, and all SSB. All on a 90 foot wire out of an upstairs bathroom window to a pine tree using an SGC-230 autotuner (a really old one). Now I am looking for Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, and Wyoming! [Elecraft] K160 effect on 80/75m power
This may be normal, but wanted to check if others see a slightly reduced power output at the high end of 75m after installing the K160 module. After peaking L3 and L4 on 160m per the instruction manual, I notice that on 80m around 3.5Mhz, when the K2 power is set to 10w, I can only get about 9w out...and then at 3.99Mhz, I only can get about 8.5w out. Not sure if this will matter since I'm now building the KPA100 and will at most times be driving an amp at 60 watts from the K2/100, but curious to see if this is normal or if there some other tweaking I can do to get at least 10w on 75/80m when running without the KPA100. or was it How to set up SSB. Anyhow, I did everything I thought I should. I heard an OM saying CQ on 40, and I went back with a request for an audio report, and again, I get Horrible. Not much help. Summary: Mic element went south (I know it worked 2 years ago). I never got an answer from Heil about a replacement element. Gary (Elecraft) says Heil handles mics, not Elecraft. The RadioShack 270-090 appears identical to the MH2 element, and appears to work (At least the o'scope draws pretty pictures). So, to determine the nature of my horribleness, I need to monitor my transmissions. To that end, I threw together a 40m DC receiver. I transmitted into my dummy load and listened to the monitor receiver on headphones. That doesn't work. You can't tell anything on headphones when you are doing the talking. I set up the monitor receiver to record on my laptop, tuned some rag chewers on 40, found them on the K2, and pressed record. After about 15 seconds of traffic, I switched the K2 to the dummy load and started talking (Kind of a seriously cross-mode qsyg). Playing back the recording, both the OT's in Illinois and I sounded fine. So, back on the air. Now my audio reports are Horrible. There's not enough drive with SSBa on 1, so I think 2 is the way to go. SSBc maybe should be 1:1, but it sounded better to me at 2:1. Of course, the issue may simply be I have no idea at all how to zero beat SSB. I think my next step will be a sched with someone who has a clue (I sure don't) and a while to spend. We can move the bfo's around, or maybe even definitively say my mic element sucks. Another choice (getting more attractive all the time) is stay under 7150 Kcs. [Elecraft] KPA100 remote w/o KAT100?
Hi, I'm proud owner of K2 SN 4426. Have built this out as a QRP rig with KBT2, KATU, KDSP, SSB, NB. Ordering the 160 module today. I also want to have 100W capability but don't think I want to build it in the rig, I'd rather put it in a EC2. The main reason I don't want to build the KPA100 in the rig is that I travel frequently and sometimes like to take my K2 with me. I just assume it is an effort to take out the top with the KBT and put in the KPA100 top section. Is my assumption correct? Can I keep the 20W tuner in the rig if I put in the KPA100 and just put it in CALP mode? Can this happen automatically so I don't accidently toast the tuner with 100W? All of the posts I have seen regarding remoting the KPA100 always include the KAT100, which I don't think I want. Reason is, the only time I'd use the 100W is when I'm home in the shack using mostly resonant antennae but also I have my KW tuner in line as well. I run a linear amp when needed for DX and bad conditions which the KPA100 would drive at 65W or so. Therefore, can I just order the KPA100 and EC2? Do I need a KIO in the rig to interface with KPA? I would want to interface the K2/KPA100 to my N3FJP program so I would most likely do the dual uart cable I've seen from the KPA100. Hey, I just figured that out. 20K and 0.01 detect fine at a decent bandwidth, but it's output is average envelope power. You are absolutely right that I'm detecting AM. It sort of sounds like a voice when I talk, but when I whistle, it's just a constant 3v out. Not gonna work without an oscillator. I must have known that because I said it wouldn't work for CW, but I just had to try. Thanks anyhow. Another idea. Why not some sort of RF-probe circuit? It would look just like the RF probe in the book, but with different component values to get the time constant down. The RF probe in the book gives about a 100 Hz bandwidth which isn't enough (I'd want at least 5K for SSB audio testing). This will only work for AM signals (full carrier, and at least one sideband), not suppressed carrier SSB. My guess is that even if you were to throw your balanced modulator WAY out of balance, it still would provide poor and confusing results due to the carrier attenuation provided by the crystal (sideband) filter. A simple, low gain, direct conversion receiver (oscillator, mixer, audio amplifier) will provide the necessary carrier injection (BFO) for proper audio demodulation. 73, de John, KD2BD = Visit John on the Web at: http://www.qsl.net/kd2bd/ __ Do you Yahoo!? I tried the unit from Morse Express and it was just a standard notebook type supply that put over a S9 noise level into the K2. I use a MP1 antenna and it is usually within 10 ft of the power supply and rig. If I use this type of supply with my outdoor antennas at the home QTH, the amount of noise induced into the radio is minimal, but with the antenna in the room, it drowns out the signal on 40m completely and 20m is pretty bad as well. I did try moving around the counterpoise, taking a ground wire from the K2 to the electrical ground on the center screw of the wall plate, none of this helped lower the noise picked up by the antenna and rig from the power supply. I do have the battery pack for the K2, but I imagine I'll run into some objections of this type of battery when I travel on airplanes with the radio and I'd like to reduce the weight by not carrying the battery all the time. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried the MFJ4103? I can't tell from the picture if it uses a 3 prong grounded AC plug or not, perhaps that would indicate some better grounding in the design.. 73, K5GUS Dan Schieler ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Well, the Heil Hospital page is for returning (at $12 or more) for them to repair. I couldn't find any parts on the site - It says to call them if it's not listed. Of course, they don't answer (actually, it's been busy for quite some time). The RatShack 270-090 sure looks identical. I'll just run that. Thanks for the voltages. Now I know the old element was toast. Hi Dan, You might have a bad mic or mic connector or cable problem. The electret element in the MH2 draws very little current, so it should not load the 5V on the AF wire but slightly. I see about 1.7K to 1.5K to ground between mic pins 1 and 7 on two different MH2 mics I have here. On my KSB2, P1-5 has 5.0VDC without the MH2 connected, and 4.0VDC with it plugged in. Heil handles QC problems with their mics directly. [Elecraft] How to set up SSB
I've just gotten my MH2 working again with a RadioShack 270-090 element. I have no idea if that's the right part, but it appeared identical to the Heil part, and the o'scope says about 120 mV p-p when I talk normally (Measured at pin 5 of the SSB adapter - should be the same as mic connectory pin 1). Anyhow, I sold my other rig years ago as the K2 was all I appeared to need. I'm wondering how to deal with on-air reports of horrible audio, almost unreadable without hearing what I sound like. Ideas: a) Borrow an SSB rig and fix my K2. b) Try stuff randomly on the air and hope the other ops give consistent info. I'm not sure how much trouble a) would be, but it's most likely the best way. I wonder what the shipping would be to borrow an extra rig from someone? Any spares out there? b) should work, but I have SSBA-1, SSBA-2, SSBC 1:1, SSBC 2:1, SSBC 3:1, SSBC 4:1, the VFO (how to tune someone whose voice you don't know) and of course, the BFO. Varying all of these in an organized way is going to take another receiver or someone VERY patient on the other end of the aether. Ideas? Hey, anyone know of an Internet receiver I can listen through? That might work. Only thing I could find in the archives is http://www.smeter.net/ and it's off the air. [Elecraft] K2 Requested vs. Indicated Power Output
Gentlemen, I have a question concerning the power level requested and the indicated power delivered by the K2. How close should the indicated power track the requested power level? My K2, #4473, is very close at about 2 watts, but below or above this requested power level it varies in the amount of difference between the two. This difference is on all bands but by different amounts. An example would be: At 2 watts requested, K2 indicates 1.9 watts when tune is pressed. At 7 watts requested, K2 indicates 8.5 watts when tune is pressed. At 10 watts requested, K2 indicates 12 watts when tune is pressed. This is representative of all bands, the values of indicated power is different on each band. My indicated power on all bands at 10 watts requested is greater that 10 watts indicated when tune is pressed. I know that the power level you set is only a requested power level; what I don't know is the degree of accuracy I should expect from the indicated power. Anyway, do I have a problem or what? Any and all help is and will be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance! Dan, N4FYS K2 # 4473 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Spectrogram help
I must be doing something wrong. Have my BFO settings exactly as specified in the K2 manual on CW. Using the noise gen from Elecraft. However, during the BFO settings per the K2 manual, FL2-FL4 at the BFO settings they specify results in almost no audio coming from the speaker using the N-gen. Then, when I go to spectrogram, my entire curve for FL1 is to the right of 600Hz on this display and no matter what I do with the vfo knob, there is no shifting of the curve to speak of and just changes in amplitude. On FL2-FL4, there is no amplitude at all but I can then adjust the VFO and see/hear the Ngen signals coming thru but the entire curve is still to the right of 600Hz. Running spectrogram off the headphone jack to my sound card. During operation, my CW mode audio level is considerably below the LSB or USB level and my receive CW signals seem to turn to clicks at audio freq below 800Hz or so.what have I missed? I just built s/n 4426 and it had the Motorola blue colored MPS5179 which caused my freq counter not to work. [Elecraft] K2 #4473 Is Alive and Kicking
Hello Elecrafters, I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that K2 S/N 4473 passed Test and Alignment III tonight at about 10:30 PM EST. It made it, even though the builder had his head up where the sun don't shine a couple of times. I relearned a lesson I learned a long time ago, 'It takes 10 times as long to unsolder a part as it did to solder it'. Somehow, I managed to install both U4 and U5 backwards on the Front Panel board. If you look in the manual they even have a warning in bold face type. And of course, It couldn't have been a 8 pin DIP or even a 14 pin DIP. No Sir, it had to be 20 pin DIPs, two of'em. Didn't take me long to find them either. As soon as I had soldered the last pin and was checking my work, I realized what I'd done.Take my advice, don't even think about trying to salvage them. I gritted my teeth as I cut them out with the nippers. I can tell you one thing, a weeks a long, long time when your waiting for the replacements to come, but it's better than messing up such a high quality board. The second time was when I was doing the resistance checks on the Front Panel board. Manual says that U1 pin 1 should read 25 - 35K to ground but I was reading open. Another instance of a sinking feeling in the pity of my stomach. Didn't take me long to find this one either, pin 1 on the U1 socket was not soldered. I could see it -- by looking under the LED diffuser and LCD that were installed. Lesson number two, 'Creative rework is some of the hardest work you'll ever have to do'! At least I didn't have to wait another week!! The rest of the build was uneventful and it was the most fun I've had in years. I think I'm hooked on building these things. I already miss the smell of rosin coming off a hot iron and it's only been a couple of hours. For those of you who haven't made up your minds yet about building a K2. They are every bit as good as everyone says they are. The manual is the best I've ever read, very complete. The engineering that went into this radio is on a level that I haven't seen in 20 or 30 years. The case work, circuit boards and component quality appear to me to be as good as the Mil Spec stuff I saw and worked with years ago and much better that the computer grade stuff I work with now. So, get yourself a good temp controlled iron, a DMM (Circuit Specialist will give you a DMM if you buy $50 or more and they have a temp controlled iron for $36), a good pair of flush cutting nippers and above all a good lighted magnifier and join the fun. I don't think you'll ever regret it. Thanks Elecraft and Thank You Christina, you did a great job packing K2 4473. [Elecraft] Elk hair caddis KX1
Just had to share with you all some fun I had on Monday. I had a free day, so I thought I'd combine my two favorite hobbies-fly fishing radio. In the fall the weather here in Oregon is perfect, and a good time to fish as the tourists, rafters schoolkids are gone :). I went to the Deschutes river in central Or ( near Maupin, for those who know). It's a world class fly fishing river, and the weather was right at 75 F. So, I fished into the early evening with mixed results (not much rising) and then threw up a wire in the trees along the river to see if I could get some 'rises' on 20M for the Spartan sprint. Here I am in my waders shooting a line in the tree with my slingshot/reel combo, truly 'tree fishing'.The KX1 with the tuner made quick work of a 25' long wire. The bands were hot, and I always forget how noise-free it is away from civilization. So, I got some nice catches on the bands under the stars, if not from the river. Got a little chilly as night fell, but the radio did a great job, and even tuned up the short wire on 40 after 20 died for some more qsos.it doesn't get any better than this! I was thinking about 'wading mobile' this morning; I could use a graphite rod with a wire line, and ground plane would be great as I'm in the water already. Re: [Elecraft] recommended switching supply
Jim, I bought an Alinco DM-330MVT when it first came on the market. It must have been one of the very first ever sold. I have used it with several rigs (MFJ QRP Cub, Icom 706, PSK-20), as well as with my K2. I have been extremely pleased with it. I have never heard any noise at all from it, and I have tried hard to find a noise signature. However, if it ever does cause a noise problem, it has a control to vary the switching frequency to eliminate (or move) the problem. What I like about it the most is that it is extremely small and light weight. About like a very large paper-back book. I think you would be happy with it. RE: [Elecraft] Cal AT100 SWR bridge
Is the Diawa between the K2 and the Tuner, or between the Tuner and the Antenna? Is the Antenna resonant? You should not expect a flat SWR after the tuner unless the antenna/feedline system is a perfect match - That's the purpose of the tuner in the first place. To compare apples to apples, check the SWR of the same thing at the same spot. IE, put the Diawa in the line only, measure SWR, remove the Diawa and put the KAT100 in line using the same connectors and cables, turn off the Auto-tuning function (I forget - CALP?), and check again - Same frequency, Same antenna, Same feeders, Same cables, jumpers, connectors and testing location. RE: [Elecraft] key down voltage drop
That is very odd indeed. You should measure at the other end of the wires, to see what the radio is seeing, but I'm afraid that would make it even worse. Can you measure the current being drawn? That would be an interesting figure. Are you certain RF isn't getting into the PS or the meter? 13.8 - 12.4 is more than .2 volts! 1.4 comes to mind. A 3 volt drop in a 35 amp supply just doesn't compute. Maybe if you were using a long 18 guage wire and measuring at the rig, but you aren't! You mention 5x9 signal reports. Any reports of any other artifacts (other than Strength)? Keep us posted! Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 k6xr Sent: Thursday, September 16, 2004 2:44 PM Hello Dan and thanks for your thoughts. I connected a voltmeter across the power supply terminals and keyed each rig on 20 meters at 1.0.1 swr at 100 watts output. power supply voltage unloaded measures 13.8 volts. ts-570 drops voltage down to 12.4 volts k2/100 drops voltage down to 10.8 volts. k2/qrp at 15 watts drops down to 12.1 volts. the reason for all this is that I kept getting 558 557 598 signal reports and decided to see if I had a voltage problem. FW: [Elecraft] 80m Reflector problem
I just fired off a bunch of tripple-gallon (15 W) dits on 3505. No echos heard from Northwest Georgia. Anyone else hear it? Let's see if it's localized. I'm at N 34 54 22 W 85 26 21. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 snip I can hear it all the time now on 80m, at least for the past three days. /snip ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post.
