Re: [Elecraft] Happy 15th Birthday to my K2!

2024-03-03 Thread Dave Sublette
Congrats. I built mine in 2004. It is a 10 watt version with 160, ATU,
and serial port. It is a good one. I have the KX3 and the K3S. I believe
the audio from the K2 is easier on the ears than either of the other two.

[Elecraft] Keying the K3s

2023-01-20 Thread Dave Sublette
Good morning,

I have two questions. I plan to operate a contest next weekend in the QRP
mode. Is there any added danger for operating the K3s at the 5 watt level
for the contest?

The other question is about keying CW with the computer. I have N1MM
working. It reads the frequency and controls the K3s. But, how may I use
the CW feature of N1MM to send CW? I know folks use devices like the
WinKeyer, but I don't have one of those. I will consult the N1MM to see if
there are any instructions. But my overriding concern is, are there any
issues that make using a WinKeyer better than keying the K3s directly
through the USB control of the interface?

Thanks for any help.

Please accept this in the spirit in which it is offered. I think it is
absolutely hilarious that after waiting months to get one's hands on the
coolest radio on the planet, the first question is, "How can I remote

even be seen.

Just sayin'.

My take on it is you save money, but if anything goes awry, good luck.

Then again, ANY insurance claim with ANY carrier has been a hassle for me
over the years.

I'm not taking sides here. Just be sure you know what is involved before

The KAT500 Owner's Manual, Page 3 under "Placement". "The KAT500 may be

[Elecraft] Added info KIO2 troubleshooting

2022-05-27 Thread Dave Sublette
Sorry... I forgot to say that I am using a short adapter cable, DB9-M to
DB-9F that eliminates all wire connections except for pins 1,2,3, and 5,
per instructions in the K2 Manual. It is new. I just built it and it
checks out with an ohmmeter.

FYI This K2 has talked to this computer before, but has been through a
recent repair cycle. The KUSB cable might be bad, but until I get
schematics or voltage table data, I have no way of knowing. As I said
before, the DB-9 connector on the KUSB cable does get warm like there is
something at work in there.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Troubleshooting KIO2

2022-05-27 Thread Dave Sublette
Good afternoon,

I have a K2 that refuses to talk to my computer. The computer software
works and talks to my K3s and an RT21 rotator controller using a straight
USB cables.

The K2 has a serial port and requires the KUSB cable which plugs into the
USB port and terminates in a DB-9 connector. It is warm, so I assume there
is a chip in there, doing what is required to convert USB to serial.

The KUSB cable is recognized when connected to the USB. Voltage check at
pins 5,3,2,and 1 per the KIO2 manual are good.

All looks like it would work, but it doesn't.

To continue troubleshooting, I would like to have information that gives me
voltage readings at the pins on the KUSB cable without the K2 connected. A
further help would be to have a way to watch the TXD and RXD data. The
software attempts to connect to the K2 several times before giving up,

It would be nice to have a schematic of the KUSB cable.

If anyone has experience troubleshooting this sort of thing or knows where
to get more information, please let me know.

Any help would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA card repair

2021-12-08 Thread Dave Sublette
Good afternoon,

My P3 was just returned from Elecraft, where I sent it for repair
(lightning). The SVGA card was in the box with paperwork saying the U502
voltage regulator was replaced, but the unit was unrepairable.

Is there anyone on the list who would be willing to try and repair it? I
know there was a discussion recently and I saved it (somewhere). Wish I

[Elecraft] KIO2 problem -- maybe

2021-11-19 Thread Dave Sublette
I had a lightning strike and am getting things back together. I am
attempting to connect via a KUSB cable with a series adapter to make it a
proper cable for the K2.

The PORT menus says the port is ON and I can turn it ON and OFF as outlined
in the manual.

Prior to the strike, this same radio and cable and software was operating
normally. Now the software cannot connect to the radio, even though the
setup shows an available USB/serial port available.

I'm wondering if the KUSB cable is bad(probably due to the strike)?

First item I need to know, is the KIO2 OK if I can turn it on and off from
the EDIT menu? If the KIO2 is good, then it has to be the KUSB cable.

What say ye?

Thanks,

Dave, K4TO

Re: [Elecraft] Notable SSB QSO (HD8R)

2021-11-04 Thread Dave Sublette
My story is too good to pass up this bragfest. On October 7 I had a
serious lightning strike. It damaged five pieces of elecraft gear, K3s,
KX3, KPA500, KAT500, and P3. All have been sent to Elecraft for repair and
I must say the response from them has been excellent. I was left with two
radios, a homebrew tube Tx (10w) for 40 meters and a Drake 2B, plus my
venerable K2/10W, built in 2004.

On October 14 I had previously scheduled a 200 foot crane to install three
new JK antennas to replace all of the antennas on my 155 foot rotating
tower, which had been destroyed by a winter ice storm. On the 14th, the
crane showed up and also 8 of my DXer friends to be ground crew. All went
well and I now have a 2 stack on 40 and a 3 stack on 20-10. There is only
one more problem. The rotator motor was killed by the same lightning
strike. The tower is bolted in a fixed position, pointing to S. America.
If anything shows from that direction, I work it. It is a killer antenna
system and I live on the highest point in the county. It's been a great
location for me for the past 32 years.

So HD8R appeared on the lower end of 40CW a couple of nights ago, pounding
in, because the antenna was "only" 25 degrees off line. So I called and
worked them with 10 watts out of the huge pileup with the K2. It took 30
minutes.

Getting back to the antenna party, one of my "buddies" took it upon himself
to escort each of the ground crew, one at a time (COVID) into the hamshack
to see the carnage, which included a three fingered sized hole in the back
of the KPA500 where the line cord module used to live. As they came
through the door, I overheard him say, "please sign the guest book." In a
way, I guess it was similar to the viewing of the deceased at a funeral.

A call from support has assured me that the KPA500 will live again with the
organ transplant of three modules and a few bucks.

BTW, it was the easiest I have ever put up an antenna in my 64 years. I
just sat under a canopy and watched as I am almost 80 and gave up climbing
three months ago.

We ARE having fun, aren't we?

[Elecraft] Pricing

2021-10-19 Thread Dave Sublette
Forgive this redundant question, but I have no internet and my phone is
almost out of data. I need the new price of factory built KPA500. and
KAT500.

I need it to buy shipping insurance. I had a lightning strike last week
and so they have been issued an RSA for repair.

FYI the same lightning strike got the internet also. Just lucky, I guess.

If you wish, send privately to mycall at ARRL dot net

Re: [Elecraft] A or B?

2021-07-06 Thread Dave Sublette
FWIW, I learned on mode B with the WB4VVF keyer. Now, when I try to use
Mode A, I often do not complete characters.

Whichever mode you select, practice, practice, practice, off the air.
Again, IMO the rhythm and spacing you use between letters and words will
make the difference in how easily someone can copy your sending. It is a
lot like music. The rests are just as important.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class, ~1975

2021-04-25 Thread Dave Sublette
To clarify, my Dad was not a ham. But he did teach me and the rest of the
scouts the code. He was my first scoutmaster. When I joined the Navy at
age 19, he got interested and got his novice ticket as a surprise. I was
at K6NCG, going to ET'A' school on Treasure Island. He called me on the
phone, which was a big deal long distance from Indiana to California in
1962. We met on the 40M Novice band and I was his first QSO. He refused
to work anyone else until he worked me. When he died in 1999, I found the
QSL I had sent him from K6NCG, hanging on his bedroom wall. He never got
his general.

As I said before, memories are priceless.

2021-04-24 Thread Dave Sublette
My relationship with drafting class goes back to before I was born. My
Dad, born in 1918, took drafting class in 1936. After he died, I found a
pen and ink drawing of his from that class. It was a schematic of two
different crystal sets. As a teen, Dad was the neighborhood radio
technician. He strung wire antennas and repaired headphones for folks.

I had that schematic framed and built one of the sets. I entered it in the
antiques section of the county fair(with a note that the radio was not the
antique). I won a Blue Ribbon and was considered for the grand champion
ribbon. I have the drawing and the set on my mantle.

At almost 80 years of age, my memories are increasing in value.

[Elecraft] KIO2 and KUSB

2021-02-27 Thread Dave Sublette
Problem is fixed. Thanks to very good advice from Geert Jan PE1HZG.
I solved it by putting the old cable in series with the new cable. The
old cable had only the proper three pins in it. I had made it several
years ago, using the information in the manual. In the meantime I had
forgotten the Caution about too many wires!

My K2 was not damaged

[Elecraft] K2 question

2021-02-27 Thread Dave Sublette
Is the KUSB cable compatible with the K2? Should have asked this before I
bought the cable. My K2 has worked with a serial port adapter from Keyspan
for several years and with a variety of logging programs.

I had to ditch the keyspan because BiG Sur doesn't have a driver and
Keyspan doesn't have a compatible driver for Big Sur

So I went with the KUSB. When I connect it, the K2 does strange things.
Power control turned all the way down results in a nice 10 watt output and
normal operation. When Power control is turned up I get a HiCurr and LoPWR
error and the display only shows power, not frequency.

Any thoughts?

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide

2021-01-03 Thread Dave Sublette
Well I have been an extra class since 1963. I too, have patents and am a
retired EE design engineer. I run three Elecraft rigs and two computers.
But I admit that I feel dumber than a hammer when looking at all the
software options and menu items. I haven't even considered a Flex because
of my limited computer skills.

Btw, at age 79, I can still build with SMDs. It's a matter of being
blessed with good enough eyesight and steady hands.

I got over looking down on others without my level of expertise when I
realized there were just as many who have skills I don't have.

If amateur radio is to survive, we need to be teammates, not adversaries.

End of soapbox session.

Re: [Elecraft] Lightning Season, disconnect COMPUTER etc.

2020-08-14 Thread Dave Sublette
I don't know if this really helps or not, but I connect my computer to the
internet through a WiFi. I have DSL which feeds a WiFi Router. That DSL
modem and the router are the only things connected to the phone line.

When lightning threatens I disconnect all power, ground, coax, rotator
control cables, etc. Anything that goes to the outside world (including
the station ground to the ground rod outside of my window is removed.

I live on a ridge, the highest point in the county. The ground slopes down
and away for 20 to 30 miles in all directions. I have two 150 foot towers
and a 70 footer. The first ten years I was at this location I was hit 4
times by lightning. Then I instituted my disconnect policy. I have had no
strikes in the last 20 years. The lightning strikes, but there has been no
damage to equipment.

The chassis to chassis bonding remains in place.

Your results may differ.

Beautiful Photography and excellent writing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It
almost makes me want to hook up a mic and try to work you.The altitude is
really impressive. I am limited to 8000 feet due to 55% lung capacity from
birth.

Well I didn't see what band it was on. If below 20M, the preamp should be
off and maybe attenuator on. Also the RF gain should be backed off.

[Elecraft] K3s noise figure spec

2020-06-30 Thread Dave Sublette
Does anybody KNOW what the noise figure is for the 50MHz preamp on the
K3s? It isn't listed in the specifications.

I need to know in order to make system noise figure calculations. My
feedline is going to be long (low loss, but long) and I'm trying to
determine if I will need a preamp mounted at the antenna.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones

2020-05-10 Thread Dave Sublette
The answer to your question seems obvious to me. I am not a lawyer. Your
equipment had to operate too much more stringent requirements because human
life is at stake. The part 15 "must accept" clause says that if you are
being interfered with on your Part 15 device, is it not legal grounds to
award damages in a court case. It won't keep someone from from filing a
suit. But without that clause we hams might be hauled into court by every
one who is interfered with. We have been, but Part 15 has kept the
practice from proliferating. Devices sold under part 15 are not used in
situations where human life is at stake. Well they probably are, but are
not designed specifically to operate that way as are aircraft radio and
navigation systems.

In addition, the "must accept" clause releases hams from the legal and
financial obligations to correct the problem. I should think that it also
releases the manufacturer from that also.

I'm not a lawyer. It's just my take on it.

Re: [Elecraft] New Mystery: Copying groups vs plain language text (Rather OT)

2020-05-01 Thread Dave Sublette
Folks, I have restrained and refrained from entering this discussion until
I can no longer endure. February 1, 1963 I sat for my Extra with the
District Engineer himself in the Federal Building, downtown San Francisco.
I never did know his name and I cannot read his signature on the
certificate on the wall behind me. I was a barely-21 year old Navy Seaman
going to the ET 'A' School on Treasure Island. I was taking the test
because one of my classmates had bet me he could get his Extra before I
could. If remember correctly he told me he had had 12 screwdrivers that
night. I doubt it. Who can count after three of them?

They gave the exam every Friday at the FCC office. Friday was exam day
every week of the 38 week-long school. In order to take it, I would have
to get special permission to take the exam the night before and get the
the day off next day. I knew I would be lucky if that happened and I
wanted to make very sure that I passed if I got the chance. I doubt the
navy would have allowed a second attempt.

So for six weeks every night I copied code from 10 wpm through 40 wpm from
the local code practice station, K6USN. They were the Naval Reserve station
on the other end of the island from us. We were the Schools Command
Amateur Radio Club, K6NCG. I could turn the RF Gain down on my receiver
and it was like having your own code machine. I progressed until I could
copy 30wpm solid and get four of five written down (five letter groups!). I
was printing, not writing, and no typewriter.

When I walked into the FCC office and asked if I could take the Extra code
and written test, you would have thought I had come from Mars. They almost
literally rolled out a red carpet. In those days, very few ever attempted
the Extra. So the engineer in charge ran the code machine. After allowing
a few minutes of warm up, he started the test tape. When it finished he
stood up and said,"I will give you a few minutes to cross your T's and dot
your I's." He was really trying to be nice to me. Well I had copied every
character from the opening "VVV" to the ending "AR" in neat, block
letters. I said, "I don't think that will be necessary," and handed him
my sheet. he looked at it, smiled and said,"You're right." I don't think
he even counted to see if I had 100 characters in a row.

I completed the written exam in a couple of hours. I'm not sure how many
questions were on it, but I remember one was , "Draw a schematic diagram of
a plate modulated transmitter."

A couple of weeks later I sat for the First Class Engineer License and got
it, with Ship Radar Endorsement.

My time at ET school on TI is one of many treasured memories. I believe it
was the best of the military electronics schools. I loved every minute of
it.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Update?

2020-03-22 Thread Dave Sublette
As for my XYL and I, we are enjoying the opportunity to get off the
treadmill of the routine. We are getting things done around the house that
we have not been able to get to. I am really enjoying being on the air.
Also, I have a ton of projects on the bench and have been like a kid in the
candy store, going from one to another.

I second your thoughts about first responders. If this is over responding
to the threat, then so be it. It should result in cutting this off before
it gets started.

Stay well, stay safe. See you on the air.

Cables". I found two, brand new and still in plastic bags, KXUSB cables.
I don't really know how I came to have those. Unfortunately, there were no
KXSER cables. But if anyone wants one of the others, I will put a very
reasonable price on them. Or, if anyone knows why I should have them, let
me know :-). I have both the K3s/KPA500/KAT500 and KX3/KXPA100 stations
operating and don't seem to need them.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Drive Question?

2019-12-05 Thread Dave Sublette
Yaesu?? Well there is your problem. An Elecraft rig plugged into the 1500
would follow you around like a good dog, turning the drive power up and
down as necessary.

Seriously, I know nothing about Yaesu, but in the menu system, is there a
way of setting the output on each band such that the rig will remember it?
then all you would have to do is turn up the power when you wanted to run
barefoot.

Re: [Elecraft] External 10 Mhz reference level

2019-11-23 Thread Dave Sublette
Ed, et.al.,

I did get my instructions out for the EXTREF. I had forgotten that there
were extra sheets for that. I use an HP Z3801 through an 8 way splitter
and run the 10 MHz from the garage to the shack, a fifty foot run, on .14
in diameter 75 ohm cable. I also put a 1:1 isolation transformer in that
line before it left the garage.

By the time it got to the shack, there was only -1.0 dBm left. So I took
my DEMI 4 output box and tried that. It wouldn't put out more than +2 dBm
to the K3s. So, I hacked the circuit board, taking one of the four
circuits and using it as a driver for the other three. I now get 12.5 dBm
drive to the K3s. All the asterisks are lit. All appears to be working as
advertised.

Thanks for all the advice. It helps to know I am not alone in making these
sorts of decisions.

[Elecraft] External 10 Mhz reference level

2019-11-21 Thread Dave Sublette
I have a K3s, delivered in January this year. I am using an external GPS
disciplined 10 Mhz reference to the External Ref input on the back. I
cannot find anywhere in the manual what the required level for this input
is. I have -1.1 dBm and it seems to work. However, once in a while, the
K3s frequency shifts down 10 hz, then back to the original frequency, then
up 10 hz, then back to original frequency, all in a matter of two t four
seconds. This happens maybe once a week and lasts for a minute or two. I
have never heard it do more than one sequence of down-back-up-back at
 time.

It is very noticeable on receive and a local ham told me he noticed it on
my transmitted signal also.

Could it be that my input level is too low?

It is possible that the GPS reference is jumping, but I haven't been able
to observe that yet. I am watching.

[Elecraft] K3s AM filter

2019-11-01 Thread Dave Sublette
Good evening all,

I installed the 6 KHz filter into FL1 on the main receiver today. I did
not put one in the sub receiver. To do this, I had to move four filters
from slots 1 thru 4 to slots 2 thru 5 in both receivers. So now I have 6
KHz in FL1 in the main Rx, no filter in FL1 in the sub receiver and FL2
thru FL5 match widths in the main and sub receivers. I made the
appropriate entries in the gain and setup menus. Checking them on several
bands shows that all appears to be in order.

However, in the AM mode I can only widen the passband to 5.0 KHz. Is this
normal operation, or have I missed something?

Thanks as always for your advice.

[Elecraft] K3s problem

2019-09-21 Thread Dave Sublette
I have had my K3s since January. I use it exclusively on CW. Twice in the
past ten days, in the middle of a QSO, I can hear nothing when I stop
sending. No background noise. No signal. The quick fix is to turn the
unit off, then right back on.

There is at least an inch of cooling all around the radio. I haven't ever
used it on digital. In other words, I don't think it is a heat problem.

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] For Sale: T1 Automatic Antenna Tuner

I recently installed the KAT2 tuner in my K2. I no longer need my T1. The

[Elecraft] portable antennas and rigs going through airport security

2019-06-03 Thread Dave Sublette
All this talk about the AX-1 has stirred me up. My wife and I fly to Utah
once or twice a year to visit grandchildren. I have a KX3. Although I am
sure the AX-1 is a nifty and convenient antenna, I had stuff laying around
here, so I built a portable antenna that collapses into a 2 foot length/.
It will fit in my carry on.

My wife and I require wheelchairs when we travel, for valid reasons which I
don't need to discuss here. We always get the red carpet treatment. Since
we are both over 75 -- no shoes off, etc. They put us right through
security.

So --- what should I expect with a KX3 (no batteries), portable antenna,
and a small power supply as we go through? Your experience will be helpful
to know.

If it looks too hairy, I can just mail them to our son's house.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Firmware update trouble

2019-03-24 Thread Dave Sublette
Dick and list,

We have successfully updated the firmware for the DSP and the MCU. The
problem occurred as we were trying to install with the KXPA100 in line. I
removed it and connected the computer directly to the KX3 and all went
well. Later, we were able to connect the KXPA100 and confirmed that the
KXPA100 has the latest firmware.

Thanks to Dick and all of you who monitor this list and contribute support.

[Elecraft] KX3 Firmware update trouble

2019-03-24 Thread Dave Sublette
We were doing a firmware update (my son and I). All went well until the KX3
became stuck in the MCU LD condition. We followed the manual instructions
(several times).

The KX3 is still stuck and the computer cannot find the KX3 port. The
computer recognizes the cable, but communications fail with the KX3.

We have rebooted the computer and restarted the KX3 utility without
success. The Kx3 utility is the latest. We successfully downloaded it and
installed before we started.

What can we do next?

[Elecraft] Control of K3s from computer

2019-01-16 Thread Dave Sublette
I had the K3s operating correctly controlling it with an RS232 cable from
the computer. When I try to replace that with a USB cable, the radio isn't
found. The computer says the port is operating correctly. I'm stumped.

The software's the N1MM. I've made an inquiry there.

Perhaps there is a menu item that needs attention? I have been through it
all, but don't recall that there is.

Any suggestions?

Dave, K4TO

ps -- The P3/SVGA is running an external monitor just fine and the control
path evidently goes through the P3. I have the proper cable connected.

[Elecraft] Old Dog -- New Tricks

2019-01-15 Thread Dave Sublette
This is the third night operating my new K3s and P3. I have had a KX3/PX3
on the air for several years. I never use the waterfall. It just never
seemed to useful to me.

Tonight I connected my 20 inch monitor to the P3. Then I noticed I can see
very faint traces in the waterfall. The signals are Q5 on CW and about S2,
right at my noise floor on 160. Now I can spot DX traces pretty easily.
Now I know how useful the waterfall can be. But it isn't apparent unless
the monitor is large. The small screen isn't big enough for my old eyes.

Thanks again, Elecraft for a beautiful bunch of gear.

[Elecraft] K3s Line Out (stereo)

2019-01-15 Thread Dave Sublette
My K3s arrived over the weekend and I have been setting it up. I am using
the rear Audio jacks to drive either headphones, or the Line out to drive
an amplifier and two speakers in the stereo mode.

The headphone jack has stereo output ok. But the line out only has right
channel audio. Left channel has nothing but a low hum.

I am testing them one at a time, using the same cable. So it is not a case
of a bad cable. The plug inserts to the same depth in both the headphone
and line out jacks, so I believe the plug is properly inserted,

I have been through both the Main Menu and Config menus, item by item. I
see nothing that would give the option to turn off the left channel of the
line out.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-12-16 Thread Dave Sublette
Hi Kevin,

There is a good reason I was on the 160M vertical on 20. It was the
antenna I could hear you best on. :-) Right now, my rotating tower with
the 40M Moxons is pointed at 164 and I won't turn it because I have a
trolley cable attached at 125 feet, getting ready to install a four element
OWA yagi. The weather has to cooperate. On 40, I was using the Moxons,
even though they were 180 degrees from you. 18 dB down is still a good
signal :-)

Always good to hear you.. I will try to make it as often as possible. But
I will be traveling for the next two Sundays and won't be on the net.

[Elecraft] KX3 Lives!

2018-12-10 Thread Dave Sublette
Thanks to all who offered advice. This morning I removed the KXPA100 from
the loop. The KX3 utility was then able to download and install the latest
firmware.

Of course this leaves the question about what is going on with the
KXPA100. I will troubleshoot that as I have time. But for now, I know the
KX3 and the FTDI-USB cable are good.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 has died

2018-12-09 Thread Dave Sublette
Oh -- one other thing I update with the KX3 utility on the MAC. To
operate with N1MM I run Windows on the MAC, simultaneously, using the
Parallels software. I have done this for more than four years using other

7/64 and it is more stable than when I used a PC.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 has died

2018-12-09 Thread Dave Sublette
OK -- time for a confession. I'm updating using a MAC. I don't think that
has anything to do with the problem. It has worked perfectly for four
years. Doesn't say that something couldn't have died. But the MCU LD and
flashing Tx LED on the KX3 says there is a firmware error and I don't think
a failed interface cable or computer would cause that.

I'm not a computer guru. It will be interesting to see how this plays
out. Thanks to all for helping. This is a knowledgeable and friendly
group to deal with.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 has died

2018-12-09 Thread Dave Sublette
It is not looking good, folks. The RS232 adapter which drives the KX3 is
not flashing any more as it usually does. The KX3 Utility returns "KX3 not
responding" when I test the link. All cables are properly connected. It's
been working perfectly until earlier this evening.

I think it is due for a trip back to Elecraft. I will call them tomorrow.

Thanks for the help. I did find the Help column and the troubleshooting ,
etc

I had already done all of those steps and got nothing but the "not
responding" error.

I'll let everyone know what happens.

[Elecraft] KX3 has died

2018-12-09 Thread Dave Sublette
I believe my KX3 has died in the past 30 minutes. It was operating with
N1MM prior to that.

I went to the support page at Elecraft.com.

I downloaded the latest KX3 Utility.

I started the Firmware upgrade process.

Initially the message said my KX3 was missing some files and to download
the latest firmware. I did that without any trouble.

When I went to transfer the firmware to the KX3, I got a message that said
"KX3 failed to enter firmware load mode" (or something like that). Further
instructions said to remove power, power back up and try again.

Same result.

Tried the "force firmware upgrade" by holding the Band- and ATU Tune
buttons down for 10 seconds. The firmware load failed again -- same error
"KX3 failed to enter Firmware load mode".

Meanwhile the front panel of the KX3 showed " MCU LD" during the entire
time.

The com port tested good, using the KX3 utility.

I don't know what else to try.

Looks like the next step is to contact Elecraft support.

Any thoughts?

Dave, K4TO

ps -- I think the KX3 is just pouting because I have ordered a new K3s :-)

That's an odd coincidence. I just got off the phone with AT My Dsl

Good to see you on here, Don. I am awaiting my new K3S and re configuring

[Elecraft] Bluetooth Noise cancelling headphones

2018-11-19 Thread Dave Sublette
Good evening,

A few days ago I posted a question about using Bluetooth headsets and the
latency problem. I got no answers, so I just took the bull by the horns
and ordered something.

Today I received the Avantree Audikast aptX low latency transmitter and the
Avantree ANC031 Active Noise Canceling Headset.

After three hours charging the headset, per the instructions, I hooked it
all to the headphone output of my KX3.

It works! There is no detectable latency. I can send and receive Morse
without stuttering. I can't hear any latency at all.

I walked the entire length of the house, about thirty feet in each
direction with walls, etc. I can hear the receiver just fine. One end of
the path is in the garage where my workshop is. That gives the possibility
of listening to a fixed or scanned set of frequencies while I am working on
something else.

In short, it appears to be just what I wanted. Now I won't try to break my
neck or drag all the radios off the table when I jump up to go get another
Pepsi out of the fridge. :-)

No connection to selling these products here. Just reporting the results
to to this point.

I may report again after I have used it awhile. The battery charge is
advertised for 40 hours. I'm sure I will put that to the test.

[Elecraft] Bluetooth Headphones for CW

2018-11-14 Thread Dave Sublette
Good morning all,

Skip to the last paragraph to get the question.

I operate almost exclusively on CW with a KX3 and K2 that I built in 2004.
I have the audio from two computers and both radios run to a small Xenyx
502 mixer , then to a small stereo amp and a nice pair of speakers. I
seldom use the speakers and I run a couple of pairs of corded headphones
from the mixer.

I often run afoul of the headphone cord. It gets tangled in the arm of my
chair, etc... I would love to have wireless, noise cancelling headphones.
However, this would involve putting a bluetooth (or other wireless)
transmitter on the mixer output, compatible with whichever model of
headphones I buy.

The big issue (as far as I can understand it) is Latency. The CW sidetone
must not be delayed. I have googled latency specs and found some pretty
good data for headphones. I found at least one pair of headphones that
measures 40ms latency, a number that would probably work. However, that
doesn't include the latency induced by the transmitter.

Is anyone using a transmitter/headphone combination for CW that works? If
so, please share your setup details. Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] Avoiding costly lightning damage to your radios gear

2018-10-30 Thread Dave Sublette
For the past 30 years I have lived-in the highest point for 25 miles in any
direction. I have three towers, 70 feet, 150 feet, and, until two years
ago, 200 feet. I lowered the 200 foot tower to 155 feet two years ago.
For the first 15 years my equipment was struck and damaged 4 times for a
total of $15000 dollars in damage. This inspite of the fact that
everything was grounded. I'm sure something wasn't right with the
grounding systems, or this wouldn't have happened. After one strike, the
drawers were welded shut on the metal desk the equipment was sitting on.

At that point, 15 years ago, I built all wooden tables to sit the equipment
on and started a policy of disconnecting everything that went to the
outside world. I made a written checklist and followed it faithfully every
time it clouded up or I had to leave the equipment for more than a few
hours.

I reconfigured the AC to the equipment to be fed by one circuit. I don't
run an amplifier so the power load was less than 500 watts, I am sure. The
AC supply for the gear comes from the inverter, a pure sine wave circuit
and a 100 amp hour AGM battery. That inverter goes to the only source of
AC. All computers are also powered from the same system.

So when I disconnect, one AC plug removes everything from AC source. THEN
I also disconnect the phone line to the house at the outside customer
access box. AND I disconnect the station ground which goes through the
largest power pole connector available. Now the equipment is bonded
together and isolated from ground.

All cables are disconnected and removed from the vicinity by several inches
(a weak point, I know).

Since implementing this system fifteen years ago, I have had zero lightning
damage, even though I have seen direct strikes to the towers.

I spent ten years of my EE design career designing lightning suppression
circuits. The bottom line is, you can't prevent damage if things are
connected to the outside world.

I won't even sit in the same room with the gear when lightning is about.
During one of the strikes, I had a turned wooden lamp sitting on the top
shelf of my rig setup. I forgot to unplug it. Lightning got it and it
exploded, creating 15 inch long splinters out of the lamp body. One buried
itself in the wall, leaving a one inch diameter hole, which I have left as
a reminder. Several other splinters flew 12 feet across the room (right
through the space where I would have been sitting in my chair) and buried
themselves in the back of a small couch where my wife usually sits and
reads in the evenings. At the time, we were out of town. When I returned
and found the scene, my first thought was that someone had broken in and
trashed the place.

Bottom line --- disconnect power, telephone line, ground bus, and all
cables every time, no exceptions.

PS-- my Mac Mini does not have a way to attach a ground wire unless I want
to drill and tap a hole in the aluminum case for a ground screw.

End of soapbox...

Re: [Elecraft] RF miracles continue to happen

2018-09-15 Thread Dave Sublette
Two years ago I entered the CQWW160CW contest with 5 watts and my KX3. I
placed 5th in North America and worked all over the world. I went
fearlessly up and down the band answering CQ's, most of which answered my
first call. I guess I should mention that my antenna is a full sized
quarter wave elevated ground plane made from Rohn 45 with insulated
broadcast section at the feed point, which is 27 feet above ground. There
are 7, full sized radial suspended at 27 feet, drooping to 15 feet at the
ends. My QTH is on a high ridge, more than 300 feet above average terrain
for 30 miles in each direction. Electrical noise level is low and I don't
use receive antennas. I guess the old saying from real estate is
applicable... location, location, location. The antenna is the key factor,
but the radio is incredible.

[Elecraft] Memories

2018-09-14 Thread Dave Sublette
Nov 3 will be the 100th anniversary of my Father's birth. As a 16 year old
with my general ticket, I watched as he put up a Spaulding 64 foot
self-supporting tower. 6 feet of water pipe with a CDE rotator out the top
and a saddle welded on the top held my 4 element Gotham 10 meter beam. The
antenna was lifted over his head and placed in the cradle at sunset. Two
hose clamps held it down, tightened, likewise, with his arm reaching above
his head. His safety belt was a piece of rope tied around his waist and
the pipe.

There is no limit to the love and dedication a Father will go to to support
and encourage his son. I'm sure watching him do that for me was much of
the inspiration that caused me to put up towers, get an engineering degree,
and try to match his example of being what a father should be.

[Elecraft] Equipment Storage and operation

2018-07-05 Thread Dave Sublette
I should start with an apology to the group. Although I stand by what I
said in a previous post, I feel that the way I expressed myself was in
violation of decorum standards for this group. I am sorry for that.

After letting my BP come down and thinking about it a bit, I realized that
I have useful experience doing the very same thing that the gentleman was
asking about. I stored and operated equipment in an unheated, uncooled
outdoor environment for over 20 years. To wit, I operated four microwave
bands with transverters and amplifiers mounted remotely in a "weatherproof"
box mounted at 185 feet on my 200 foot rotating tower. Here is what
happened:

The equipment was mounted in an enclosure commonly referred to as the
"white box project" among microwave folks. It is of very high quality
design and construction, having sealed gaskets around the hinged cover and
screened vents. The equipment inside consisted of DEMI transverters, which
I built from a kit and amplifiers that were originally built for commercial
microwave links. The point being, it was all very good quality. I have
the test gear to verify that it was all operating with good sensitivity,
etc

Over the course of the time I used it, I had to bring it down every two to
four years for repair. Corrosion from condensation was a big problem. On
the circuit boards, chip components would crack and solder connections
opened, probably from expansion and contraction due to heat and cold. I
don't recall any electrolytic capacitor failures, but those would certainly
be vulnerable under those conditions.

It was first degree abuse of electronics equipment, no doubt. My defense
for this is that it was unavoidable because the equipment has to be mounted
close to the antennas to minimize transmission line losses. I believe the
majority of us that operate microwaves mount our equipment like this and
there are many stories similar to mine.

Some folks mounted fans and light bulbs in the remote enclosures. The fans
removed some of the heat in Summer and the lightbulbs maintained some heat
in Winter and kept some of condensation from forming. Short of elaborate
measures, I don't know how the operating conditions could be matched to
those in a heated and air-conditioned shack.

So here is my attempt at constructive suggestion. I still cringe at the
thought of putting any equipment in an unheated and uncooled space outside.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line Climate Control

2018-07-04 Thread Dave Sublette
Is this some sort of a spoof? You can't be serious. Putting beautiful
equipment like this into the weather(not quite, but almost) is poor
engineering practice at least and at most, a felony. If you insist on
doing this, sell your Elecraft stuff and buy one of the other three
imported brands, but don't expect to get any repair service when it breaks
from environmental abuse.

End of soapbox rant, for now.

Re: [Elecraft] Ham radio as a side dish

2018-05-26 Thread Dave Sublette
I can think of a couple of things where my ham radio experience blends with
my other interests. Radio Control Models: for many years I used the 53 MHz
band for my RC link. Now that the GHz equipment has come along, I use
that.

Music: I play trumpet in a couple of bands. My experience with Morse Code
has helped me (my opinion) be more precise with timing or rhythms. I also
believe, although I'm not sure studies have proven, that ability to learn
and use Morse Code is highly correlated with musical ability.

Flying: I hold Commercial, Multiiengine and Intrument ratings. When I was
taking lessons, flying cross country using VORs (before GPS), I would tune
to the next VOR, I.D.it by hearing the Morse identifier, and turn the
volume down. My instructor would then lecture me on the need for properly
I.D.ing the station before turning down the volume. I had a hard time
making him understand that those dits and dahs were telling me the same
thing the voice would have.

In the Navy, I was assigned to the deck force because I was waiting for an
opening to attend ET school. The Navy's policy at that time was that I
didn't know anything until I had been to their school. I copy CW at 25
wpm. While on watch, I read the light of the ship that was steaming with us
and realized that they had signaled for a U-turn in front of us. When the
message failed to come down from the signal bridge, I informed the Officer
of the Deck. Sure enough, they turned and we avoided colliding with them.
A few minutes later, he came over to me with a puzzled look and asked how I
knew they would be turning. I told him I read the light.

I learned Morse in the Boy Scouts, on my way to becoming an Eagle Scout. I
teach Radio Merit Badge to Scouts now. Although Morse requirements have
been eliminated from the requirements, I still hope that some young person
will catch the magic and join our ranks.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Using the K2 above 29 MHz

2018-05-19 Thread Dave Sublette
I have used my K2 with a DEMI 2M transverter board in it to drive
transverters from 902 through 10368 MHz for many years. When I used it to
drive both 902 and 903 MHz portions of that band, the output was very much
lower when 29MHz was in use for 903. I can't say whether it was due to the
29 MHz IF or the 144MHz transverter output. I didn't pay much attention to
spurs as 902/903 is a trashy band anyway. I have made many nice QSOs with
the setup.

Re: [Elecraft] UPS Practice? was:Re: KPA1500 Caution

2018-04-19 Thread Dave Sublette
There is an APP that allows you to specify when you want your package
delivered by UPS. Also, you might have been able to go to the UPS
distribution point in your area and pick it up, depending on what time of
day you got home, etc... I have done this several times.

I know it is disappointing to miss a delivery, but the other fellow is
right. I wouldn't want that beautiful amp to sit on my door step for
anyone to pick up when I'm not home.

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Dave Sublette
Good morning David,

A curious bit of circumstance forced me to use an earlier version of the
Apple O/S recently. My old Mac Mini died when its UPS went hysterical and
cycled the power violently several times. I bought a new one, complete
with 16GB RAM and the 1TB Fusion Drive (and a new power backup system).

My old Mini setup ran Parallels and Win7/64 so I could run several amateur
radio programs on it. When I tried partitioning the new drive for 250GB
for Boot camp. It wouldn't do it. There is a BUG in High Sierra that
causes this and I have informed Apple of it. They have had others report
the same. They had o way to fix it at the time I was having the problem
in late March.

My solution was to wipe the new drive and install an earlier version -- in
this case 10.6 -- temporarily. The older disk utility will partition the
new drive the way I needed it. After installing Win7/64, I reinstalled
High Sierra and all was well.

This is an example of how I had to drop back to an older O/S, if only
temporarily.

Dave, K4TO

Are you in CW mode? If so, is VOX enabled?

I worked the XR0YD on 40M with 5 watts, one call. The KX3 is a cool rig!
