[Elecraft] KX3 IM3 and IM5 measurements
hi all, we made 2 tone measurements of my KX3 and compared it with my FT-817. There was one unexpected result with the KX3, and I would like to ask the group if this is already known or looks like a problem with my KX3. The IM3 peak is lower than the IM5 peak and it is asymmetric. The first picture shows the KX3 alone with no PA: http//oe9fwv.dyndns.org/oe9fwv/KX3/kx3_alone.gif The second picture shows the KX3 connected to the Hardrock50 PA: http://oe9fwv.dyndns.org/oe9fwv/KX3/kx3_HR50.gif any comments on this phenomenon would be appreciated. 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- No raindrop considers itself responsible for the flood. [Elecraft] [KX3] SWR display wrong?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator
Mark, this is exactly what I do. The LiFePO4 has a little more weight, but the cells are robust and have the correct voltage and probably can do more charge/discharge cycles. I think the trouble with a voltage regulator is not worth the very little gain in weight. Regarding the Eneloops in the KX3 I do not know if they take over the supply if the external power supply drops under 10V, but usually there is a switch in the plug which switches off the internal battery. I'll have to check this out. 73! de Werner OE9FWV On 13 May 2013 at 5:55, Mark Goldberg wrote: How about using a 4S LiFePO4 battery? From fully charged to 15% charge I get from about 14 V to 12 V in RX and very little sag on transmit. Pretty much the ideal battery for this radio in my opinion. They are rated to go down to 10V or so, but since you don't get that much more and you can permanently damage the batteries if you go too low, I stop at 12V. The KX3 will run full power throughout this range, too. I use real A123 brand cells with a balancing charger. These do not have quite as much energy density as LiPo;, but you do not need anything else. I also keep Eneloops in the KX3. I have not tested it but I think it will switch over if the external battery goes below their voltage, somewhere about 10 V. If someone could confirm that, it would be great. Those NIMH Eneloops run below 11V for most of the discharge cycle, so only 5 W on those but they hold a charge a long time so they can be used in a pinch. 73 Mark -- Es ist schwieriger, eine vorgefasste Meinung zu zertr³mmern, als ein Atom. Re: [Elecraft] mmtty setup for k3
John, the comp level should be zero in DATA modes. This is normal and cannot be changed. You should also activate the -s option. Mine is set at 0 and it does not change when I try to turn it. Tony says his is at level 6. I am curious to why mine CMP level does not change off of 0? [Elecraft] K2 MD commandset for Pactor
I have a question regarding the mode command in the K2 versus K3. I want to use the K2 for Pactor operation as I do it whith the K3. I use the RTTY mode for Pactor in the K2 (compression off) and I have to use USB, but with the command MD6 LSB is chosen. To chose RTTY REV (which is USB) I would need MD9. When I send MD6 to the K3, DATA A, USB is selected. For the programmers this means, two different commands for the K2 and for the K3 would be necessary. Do I miss something or is it really as I discribe it? It is not logic, that the MD6 command sets the K2 to LSB and the K3 to USB... what is the reason for this? 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- I suffer occasional delusions of adequacy. [Elecraft] K2 - intermittent probem in RX and TX
I have an intermittent problem when receiving and transmitting. Rx: the received modulation from other stations on 80/40m in LSB sounds like it is on the wrong sideband. The RX level seems quite low. Sometimes I have the impression that the frequency is not stable, it is like the radio is tuning upwards, the sound of the signal becomes narrower (with the OP1 selected) Tx: there is no or very little output power. All symptoms disappear when I tap on the top case and the radio works normal for a while until it appears again. Can someone imagine where I should start looking for the problem? Re: [Elecraft] K3: data modes - bizarre behavior
I use Airmail and RMS Express and both work as they should in Pactor 1-4 mode. RMS Express version is 1.1.3.0. Controller is a SCS DR-7800 P4 Dragon I recommend to use DATA Mode in the K3 for Pactor. DATA Mode should be set to DATA A, USB. You should set RMS Express to use DATA USB. You should enable SYNC DT in the K3 Main Menu. (a function key has to be set) Use Line in/out to connect the transceiver to the modem. Use PSKA and FSKA settings around 800-1000 mV. Adjust LINE IN Gain until you see ALC 3-4 bars flickering when you transmit. Mic SEL must be set to LINE IN. The dial frequency on the K3 will be set to Center - 1.5 khz. If you use the predefined frequency tables in RMS Express, you will have the correct frequency set (RX and TX will be the same frequency and mode) - unless you activate split or RIT/XIT what you should not do of course. I have successfully worked with many stations since a long time with these settings. I do not believe that there is a problem with RMS Express in the current version in this respect. (there are problems, but different from the reported here) The K3 is an excellent transceiver for Pactor. It is the best I ever had :-) 73! DATA A is exactly the same as USB except for disabling compression and EQ and the default choice of input audio path (line in instead of microphone). In particular, the frequency display in DATA A and USB is the same. A setup that works in USB should work in DATA A without changes. What I suspect might be happening is that RMS Express might be programmed to handle DATA A as if it were a USB version of AFSK A. In AFSK A, the K3's dial displays the RTTY mark frequency, whereas in DATA A the dial displays the suppressed carrier frequency. If the RMS Express programmers assumed that in DATA A the radio's indicated frequency was the center of the bandpass instead of the suppressed carrier frequency, they would program it to tune the radio 1.5 kHz too high in DATA A. 73, Rich VE3KI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- Das Volk versteht das meiste falsch, aber es fühlt das meiste richtig. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and USB Audio Codec
hi Joe, I am a bit late for a reply, but anyway. The way the codec is implemented is (as far I understand it) different and more straitforward. There is no soundcard in the radio, but the data stream is directly derived from the IF-DSP. My friend Gert, OE3ZK described it as follows: Es wird kein eigener (billig) SoundChip eingesetzt. I translate: There is no (cheap) Soundchip in the radio. The USB Audio Codec is directly created out of the IF-DSP of the transceiver. There are no inaccuracies of the cheap soundchip quartz and there is no cascading of DSP's, that is a significant difference in quality. I have a block diagram of the IC-7200 on my website, you can see it here: http://oe9fwv.shacknet.nu/oe9fwv/bilder/IC-7200%20USB.jpg This is an interesting approach in my opinion and has two major advantages. The USB Audio CODEC integrated circuit in the IC-7000 or IC-7600 has the same specifications as the USB Audio CODEC in Signalink or a $15 USB headset adapter. There is no benefit to putting audio to digital conversion in the radio and bringing the audio out using a driver dependent protocol. An integrated USB audio CODEC is nothing more than a gimmick that provides no performance benefit while limiting user flexibility/choice, increasing cost and decreasing reliability. If one were going to provide digital output, it would be far better to stream the raw in I/Q data from the DSP's ADC via firewire rather than push it through two additional A/D and D/A steps and reduce it to a single channel of audio. 73, ... hi Richard, Richard Ferch schrieb am 14 Aug 2010 um 17:46: When you used USB you said you widened the filter. I'm guessing that was the key to your success. Try widening the filter in DATA A mode. The filter in DATA A is centered on 1500 Hz, and the default width is 400 Hz. I don't know where the PTC II's Pactor tones are centered, but I am guessing they are outside the DSP filter bandpass at the K3's normal narrow filter setting. Once you have determined where the PTC II's tones are, you can use the K3's SHIFT control to re-center the filter on them and then use WIDTH to widen or narrow the bandwidth as appropriate. The same is probably true for your other digital modes. A 400 Hz filter centered on 1500 Hz will not work with MT63, for example, but simply readjusting the filter settings will allow you to use DATA A for MT63. The filter width is important but not his problem. He reported that he has no LINE IN gain. (RF out zero) Filter width for Pactor 1+2 is 500Hz, center on 1500 is default, but can be adjusted in the Ptc-2 (tone setting 4 will set the tones to 1400 - 1600Hz) For Pactor 3 the full SSB bandwidth is needed, so set the filter to 2400. [Elecraft] K3: rear microfone plug problem
I have the Heil Pro headset plugged into the rear microphone jack. All of a sudden I got very bad modulation reports, and when I checked my modulation with the monitor, I could hear a very loud noise even without speaking into the microphone. When I wiggle the microphone plug, the noise goes away and the modulation is clear like it should be. It looks like a loose connection in the microphone jack. Are these connectors prone to fail? Has anyone else had this problem and what should I try next? 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. I don't know if the algorithm has been improved in the meantime, but my box works really good. The depth of noise reduction is adjustable with a pot and it does not reduce the loudness of the signal but only the noise. At the highest NR setting voices start to sound spacey. I normally use a medium setting for best S/N effect. The noise reduction is only noticeable wih weak noisy signals. There is nearly no effect on S9+20 signals without noise. My box has one disadvantage, I don't know if this has been changed with the new product, there is only one channel, so the sub receiver has no NR. You might need two of them. [Elecraft] [K3] Macro vs. voice/CW memories
I have a problem understanding how this works and what is possible with the memory buttons M1-M4. I have created 4 makros whith often needed functions: switch from front panel to rear panel microphone (2 Macros) switch monitor off switch monitor to level 10 I wanted to assign these macros to M4 (Tap/Hold) and M3 (Tap/Hold), which was successful when I tried it. Then there is the voice recorder which also saves voice memories to the buttons M1-M4. Is this function instead of the macro function? When I accidentally switched the recorder on with M2, the programmed macro disappeared. But it is still saved somewhere in the K3, because I can assign it to the M key again. Next question: how does the K3 handle the CW memories, when a macro is programmed to the same key? I would like to have the CW memories when I am in CW mode, but the macros when I am in SSB, but I cannot find a way to switch which function is active. If macro and voice /cw memory are either / or it would be nice to have a switch to choose between them ... 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Tradition ist nicht das Bewahren von Asche, sondern das Schüren der Flamme. [Elecraft] [K2] frequency drifting
this morning I was trying a new antenna for portable use and therefore I turned my K2 on. When I was first listening I thought I had not connected the antenna because no sound came out of the radio. I switched it on and off and suddenly it worked. Then I listened to a station on 80m and suddenly it was slowly drifting away - I could follow it with the VFO for some seconds, then it disappeared completely (the radio went silent) and with a small plop it was there again on its original frequency. The frequency display did not move when this happened unless I turned the VFO. This repeated several times, I switched the radio on and off, no joy, but after a short time, I guess about half a minute or so the problem had disappeared. I could make QSO and everything looks ok. hi Dick, thank you very much for your detailed description. [Elecraft] P3 wishlist
not knowing if this is technically feasable, I'd like to have a port for a pointing device (mouse, trackball or these nice heavy tuning devices you can use to navigate in google earth or SDR transciever) regarding the screen, it would be nice to be able to use it for decoding digital modes, especially those already supported by the K3: point and click on the signal in waterfall display, decoded text in a simple terminal program and a line for keyboard input - like the PSK programs for the PC. The option of an integrated power supply would make a ultra compact portable combo - with bluetooth connection to a netbood nearly wireless. I'd also support the idea with band buttons which was already discussed earlier on the list. 73! Hi Wayne, Wayne Burdick schrieb am 29 Sep 2009 um 10:29: We've had many requests to provide an 0.5-kHz VFO tuning step size in SSB modes. I'd like to substitute this for the current 2.5 kHz selection. The new set of steps sizes for SSB would then be: 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 Most operators probably don't find 2.5 kHz steps to be particularly useful. 0.5 kHz, on the other hand, seems to be a useful lowest-common- denominator for tuning the SSB band segments. Each mode can have up to 4 step sizes with the K3's present per-mode data structure. I could add more step sizes, but that would require a much more extensive change. Please let me know if you have a compelling requirement for 2.5 kHz steps. I dont really care if the last step is 2.5 or 5 kHz. I think 5 is better for a fast move (QSY). My wish is that I can choose 0.5 kHz for the fast tuning rate with the clarifier knob. Most stations are sitting either at .0 or .5, and it is nice to check the band with the RIT knob and fine tune with the main VFO (which is rarely necessary in fact) This is what I use very often. hi all, mni thanks to all for the input on and off list. I have now decided to keep the MD-1 microphone. It needs more MIC GAIN than the Heil HC-5 but reports are very good with MIC GAIN 40. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Front/Rear MIC Input Level
hi Don, Merv, thank you for testing with your HC-5 element! yes I am using the latest Beta firmware. I use comp 20 and mic gain 20. when I push mic gain up to 60, I get a little more ALC reading, but never over 7 bars, but not more output. VCE gain is set to 2.0, I have the feeling that my voice sounds more natural when I don't drive MIC GAIN over 25. (in monitor). My LP100 wattmeter shows peaks with 100 W out with this setting. (same as CW) From this point of view all seems o.k. Do you have any official statement from Elecraft regarding the ALC reading? 73! de Werner OE9FWV On 11 Jan 2009 at 18:25, Don Wilhelm wrote: Werner, Merv, In that case I do suspect something is wrong. Can I assume you are running the latest firmware? There was a change in the ALC and the recommended 'number of bars' about 3 months ago which increased the normal 'number of bars'. If you are back-level I recommend you upgrade to the latest beta and try it again. One other consideration is how far away from the mic are you speaking - if using the headset, the microphone should be a max of only 2 inches (5 cm) away from your mouth, and the flat side of the mouthpiece should face your mouth. With a desk mic, it should be placed about the same distance from the mouth as well. Those mics are designed to 'close-talk' which helps with pickup of room noise too, and the microphone output drops off dramatically if you speak off-axis. I normally operate with the Elecraft MD2, but I went down to the workbench and brought up my D-104 that has been modified with an HC-5 element. I plugged it in a tried it at the same settings as I used with my MD2 (but with bias off) and could not talk it up to any ALC bars at all without shouting, but I did see an occasional bar or two on the CMP meter.. I switched to FP.H and still had to increase the mic gain up to 43 before I could see 7 bars on voice peaks with normal speech, like Hello from W3FPR. My compression was set at 23 for all those tests. From that experience, I must conclude that any who say they run with the mic range on Low and a mic gain setting of 23 for their HC5 element either have more mic gain than my K3 or they are shouting into the mic, or have a mic preamp in the AF input - no offense to anyone intended, but my K3 just does not behave that way with the HC5 element (unamplified). I do consider my setting to be in an acceptable range because the HC4/5 elements are the lowest output mics that I will likely use with my K3. 73, Don W3FPR Dr. Werner Furlan wrote: hi Merv, Merv Schweigert schrieb am 11 Jan 2009 um 11:51: I just checked mine #2306, cannot get ALC above 7 bars either, Heil proset, mic setting of 8 to 10 is plenty to get full power out. [Elecraft] K3 + TrxPtc
hi Wayne, we have had a discussion about adding a Pactor controller to the K3 earlier. Now when my K3 was complete with all parts I wanted to add I jumped in and added a TrxPtc. There is enough room behind the IO and XVR boards to add the TrxPtc board. Behind the main board I had to drill one 3mm hole into the KRX3 top cover to attach a standoff for the Bluetooth module. (the hole for the second standoff is already there) I used the hole for the REF input to add an SMA antenna socket for the bluetooth antenna. To switch the Ptc on and off I had to drill a hole into the back panel beside the fans, just below the 20A switch. Above this fuse I had to drill another hole for a 5mm Duo LED for a visual feedback on the status of the Ptc and the BT connection. All in all the task was not easy but it could be done without damage to the K3 and it works great. The K3 does a really good job in Pactor with a clean signal and vy good RX quality which gives a fast throughput especially in Pactor 3 mode. I'll look at the transmitted spectrum later, I don't have the necessary equipment. I want to thank Detlef DL1GJ, who was very helpful with sharing his experience (he was the first I know who built the TrxPtc into the K3) and he also gave me the SMA connector + antenna) and to Martin, DL1ZAM from SCS for technical assistance and Gary from Elecraft support who encouraged me to drill the holes ;-) I really have to bow my back before you and your team for this wonderful radio, which is so well constructed that even an amateur like me is able to add something for his needs - and it works! 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Growing old is inevitable; growing up is optional. Re: [Elecraft] Six meter birdies.
hi all, I am also suffering from birdies especially (but not only) on 6m. I have them on the main receiver and on the subreceiver, but on different frequencies. (found them on 40m and 20m too) Many of them are low volume and don't bother me in real life, but some are really loud (up to S6) and show a microfonic effect when I tap on the cover of the K3. On the loudest one I can also hear a ticking sound when I turn the VFO back and forth over the birdie reagion. The intensity can be tuned with touching or taping on the synthesizer board and sometimes touching the koax cables makes a difference. Two friends of me with K3's also have similar birdies, one worse, one less. One K3 from another ham friend does not show them. Of course all my coax cables are connected, the shield of the cables is ok and all screws of the K3 housing are tight. Different routing of the coax cables does not help, and btw, with the limited space after adding the KRX3 there are not so many possibilities left to route the cables. On 7 Jan 2009 at 13:01, Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote: Wes Stewart N7WS wrote: I'm still playing with my new K3 and finally got around to listening on 6-meters. When listening to the same frequencies with an Icom IC-R10 with a whip antenna next to the K3 I don't hear a thing. Ideas? Wes N7WS -- Wes, From what you have said these birdies are being generated inside the K3, if I am right to assume that only the power supply and nothing else except the dummy antenna load is connected to your K3, and that turning your Icom IC-R10 on or off makes no difference to any birdies' level or frequency. I do wonder if you have a fault in your K3 when you say 'so many birdies', I get the impression that something is unstable on 6m but perhaps not on the lower frequency bands. There might be a poor solder connection to a bypass capacitor for example, which could result in problems on 6m but not on the lower frequency bands certainly if two or more capacitors are used in parallel,or some SMD capacitor has failed due to mechanical stress. It might be worthwhile to troubleshoot. Some of these internal birdies that you are hearing are probably legitimate members of the birdie family created by the receiver's spurious response(s) hearing one or more of the receiver's oscillators, or their products. The frequency of these birdies can be predicted and their level can vary greatly between identical receivers, also the routing of internal cables can become fussy if shielding is inadequate or RF grounds 'float'. However this latter issue is best left to the designer. 73, Geoff GM4ESD -- There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there's MasterCard. So my recommendation - swap RX mixer boards between base and KRX3 and compare results. I is what I will try is this case. I get the loudest birdie when I touch the relay or toroid on the K3SYN. About sound main/sub - what is used XFIL? if 5 poles what is offset differenciies? I switched the filters in the main and sub receiver but it did not change this sound. I think it could be a AGC effect. I have the feeling that with AGC off the effect is less. If 5 poles, try to little bit change offset for one of them and compare. this did not change anything. It has to do with AGC I think. I have my KRX3 just on USPS so not able to test here directly. I am vy interested what you find when you have it installed! I found another anomality: if sub rx and main rx are linked together, this does not affect the coarse tuning with the RIT knob. Only the main VFO is tuned and you have to press AB to have the two VFO's on the same frequency again. Maybe it is intended? 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Reality is for people who lack imagination. [Elecraft] TRX frequency offset with -S parameter
I am trying the latest beta firmware with my K3 in Pactor mode. Like in a former try I encountered a problem, when I activate the -s Parameter in DATA A USB mode. My transceiver is sending 2.5 kHz higher than the dial display says. With the first try all was ok. Then I started to try different PTT RLS settings, and suddenly my automatic tuner did not tune anymore. I discouvered that the signal out of my K3 was broad and distorted. I switch off and on, the signal was clean again and the smartuner did his job, but now the frequency offset appeared. 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- sign seen on gate: want to know if there is life after death? tresspass here and find out! [Elecraft] K3: NR volume low
I have the impression that with the NR engaged the overall volume is much lower than without. Is there a possibility to adjust the audio volume / gain in the NR settings somewhere? I have seen this in the K2 DSP for rtty mode. Next question: 2 of my friends who tried the K3 this afternoon think that there is a significant delay in the monitor output. I don't use monitor in normal operation, I only use it to adjust my mic settings, but they make use of it a lot, and felt somehow irritated by the delay. 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Allem kann ich wiederstehen, nur der Versuchung nicht. Re: [Elecraft] Help with cheap headset and K2
hi Bill, I have tried a Plantronics Computer Headset in the past with my K2. I made an adapter like you did but with the internal 5V bias. Audio reports were worse than with the dynamic Kenwood microphone I used before. I tried this special microphone because G4ILO recommended it on his homepage. (http://www.g4ilo.com/k2_headset.html). I had hoped that I could make better use of the VOX in the K2, but it was not good enough for my low voice. In the meantime I connected it to the K3 and listened to myself and now I know why the reports were bad. The frequency response of the microphone is not good for this purpose. In the K3 I could compensate it with the equalizer, but together with the K2 you are probably lost. Now I am waiting for the Sennheiser PC 150 now, maybe this is better. My usual headset is the Heil Proset with HC5 element. The reason why I am looking for an alternative is the weight of the Heil headset and the earpads make a pressure on the arms of my glasses and this hurts after some time. 73! de Werner OE9FWV On 18 May 2008 at 16:06, nz0t wrote: Just for grins I bought a cheap Cyber Acoustics computer headset to use with my K3 when it arrives. Others have said they got good reports with their K3 and this headset which uses an electret mic and a 3.5MM stereo mini plug. Not wanting to cut off the plug which fits into the back of the K3 I made up an adapter for my K2 using an inline stereo jack, an 8 pin mike plug and a 9 volt battery through a 5K resistor to power the mic. My K2 is wired for the Kenwood mics and I don't want to power the mic from the rig. I wired the grounds to the base of the plug, 9V DC through the 5K resistor to the middle and the mic positive to the tip. It works but my reports with the K2 have not been very good. I also made up an adapter for my Drake TR7 and reports on that rig are fine. Am I doing something wrong with the K2? I know little about electret mics and maybe I am using too much voltage or the wrong resistor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't get it to work the headset was only about $15 shipped so no big deal. -- Genetic Engineering Splits Scientists PGP-Key: http://www.qsl.net/oe9fwv/furlan.asc Fone +43 5522 75013 Fax +43 820 555 85 2621 Mobile +43 664 6340014 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
