[Elecraft] KX3 IM3 and IM5 measurements

2014-07-12 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi all,

we made 2 tone measurements of my KX3 and compared it with my FT-817.
There was one unexpected result with the KX3, and I would like to ask the group
if this is
already known or looks like a problem with my KX3.

The IM3 peak is lower than the IM5 peak and it is asymmetric.

The first picture shows the KX3 alone with no PA:
http//oe9fwv.dyndns.org/oe9fwv/KX3/kx3_alone.gif

The second picture shows the KX3 connected to the Hardrock50 PA:
http://oe9fwv.dyndns.org/oe9fwv/KX3/kx3_HR50.gif

any comments on this phenomenon would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] [KX3] SWR display wrong?

2013-12-29 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
My KX3 #4475 shows SWR 1.3 when I press tune and send into a dummy load.
I checked cable and dummy load with a MiniVNA pro and my K3, both show perfect
SWR of
1.0 and 50 ohm. The KX3 has no tuner built in.

Any hints where to look?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator

2013-05-13 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
Mark,

this is exactly what I do. The LiFePO4 has a little more weight, but the cells
are robust
and have the correct voltage and probably can do more charge/discharge cycles.
I think the trouble with a voltage regulator is not worth the very little gain
in weight.
Regarding the Eneloops in the KX3 I do not know if they take over the supply if
the external
power supply drops under 10V, but usually there is a switch in the plug which
switches off the
internal battery. I'll have to check this out.

How about using a 4S LiFePO4 battery? From fully charged to 15% charge

Pretty much the ideal battery for this radio in my opinion. They are
rated to go down to 10V or so, but since you don't get that much more
and you can permanently damage the batteries if you go too low, I stop
at 12V. The KX3 will run full power throughout this range, too. I use
real A123 brand cells with a balancing charger. These do not have
quite as much energy density as LiPo;, but you do not need anything
else. I also keep Eneloops in the KX3. I have not tested it but I
think it will switch over if the external battery goes below their
voltage, somewhere about 10 V. If someone could confirm that, it would
be great. Those NIMH Eneloops run below 11V for most of the discharge
cycle, so only 5 W on those but they hold a charge a long time so they
can be used in a pinch.

Re: [Elecraft] mmtty setup for k3

2013-01-05 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
John,

the comp level should be zero in DATA modes. This is normal and cannot be
changed.
You should also activate the -s option.
(Menu - sync dt - has to be layed on a PF switch)
This minimizes distortion and RX/TX switching time critical for ARQ modes

[Elecraft] K2 MD commandset for Pactor

2012-07-15 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have a question regarding the mode command in the K2 versus K3.
I want to use the K2 for Pactor operation as I do it whith the K3.
I use the RTTY mode for Pactor in the K2 (compression off) and I have to use
USB,
but with the command MD6 LSB is chosen. To chose RTTY REV (which is USB) I
would
need MD9.
When I send MD6 to the K3, DATA A, USB is selected.

For the programmers this means, two different commands for the K2 and for the
K3 would be
necessary. Do I miss something or is it really as I discribe it? It is not
logic, that the MD6
command sets the K2 to LSB and the K3 to USB... what is the reason for this?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - intermittent probem in RX and TX

hi Don,

yes it is with the base K2, and yes I sent into a dummy load.
I'll repeat the test with a better setup (no switch between dummy load and
K2/Wattmeter)
But the fact that only 80 and 40m is affected lets me suspect the issue is with
the K2.

tnx a lot for your support!

If so, is the K2 operating into a 50 ohm load? With the bare base K2,
the RF detector must see a 50 ohm non-reactive load to have good power
 indication.

The KAT2 or KAT100 or KPA100 have real wattmeters which fix that
 condition.

[Elecraft] K2 - intermittent probem in RX and TX

2012-04-08 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have an intermittent problem when receiving and transmitting.
Rx: the received modulation from other stations on 80/40m in LSB sounds like it
is on the
wrong sideband. The RX level seems quite low. Sometimes I have the impression
that the
frequency is not stable, it is like the radio is tuning upwards, the sound of
the signal becomes
narrower (with the OP1 selected)
Tx: there is no or very little output power.
All symptoms disappear when I tap on the top case and the radio works normal
for a while
until it appears again.

Can someone imagine where I should start looking for the problem?
Any specific information on the installed options needed?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: data modes - bizarre behavior

2012-01-02 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I use Airmail and RMS Express and both work as they should in Pactor 1-4 mode.
RMS Express version is 1.1.3.0. Controller is a SCS DR-7800 P4 Dragon

I recommend to use DATA Mode in the K3 for Pactor.
DATA Mode should be set to DATA A, USB.
You should set RMS Express to use DATA USB.
You should enable SYNC DT in the K3 Main Menu. (a function key has to be set)
Use Line in/out to connect the transceiver to the modem.
Use PSKA and FSKA settings around 800-1000 mV.
Adjust LINE IN Gain until you see ALC 3-4 bars flickering when you transmit.
Mic SEL must be set to LINE IN.

The dial frequency on the K3 will be set to Center - 1.5 khz.
If you use the predefined frequency tables in RMS Express, you will have the
correct
frequency set (RX and TX will be the same frequency and mode) - unless you
activate split or
RIT/XIT what you should not do of course.

I have successfully worked with many stations since a long time with these
settings.
I do not believe that there is a problem with RMS Express in the current
version in this
respect. (there are problems, but different from the reported here)

The K3 is an excellent transceiver for Pactor. It is the best I ever had :-)

If this is correct, and RMS Express tunes to the correct frequency
in USB mode but not in DATA A mode, then there may be an error in
RMS Express. DATA A is exactly the same as USB except for disabling
compression and EQ and the default choice of input audio path (line
in instead of microphone). In particular, the frequency display in
DATA A and USB is the same. A setup that works in USB should work in
  DATA A without changes.

What I suspect might be happening is that RMS Express might be
programmed to handle DATA A as if it were a USB version of AFSK A.
In AFSK A, the K3's dial displays the RTTY mark frequency, whereas
in DATA A the dial displays the suppressed carrier frequency. If the
RMS Express programmers assumed that in DATA A the radio's indicated
frequency was the center of the bandpass instead of the suppressed
carrier frequency, they would program it to tune the radio 1.5 kHz
  too high in DATA A.

When you have your cables right and get no mod out you have to check the

I suspect you have the mic selector wrong or Line gain turned low.
When you adjust Mic Gain, Line should appear in the K3 display.

I am using the K3 DVR to record the received audio and play it back to the OM

to give him an impression of his audio. Usually third party listeners told me
that the recorded
audio sounded nearly equal to the original, but last week I recorded a ham
friend very close to
me and the replay sounded a little distorted when I retransmitted it. It
sounded very good in my
monitor though. I have seen that the ALC meter was quite high when I replayed
the recorded
audio, and it could not be influenced by my mic gain and comp setting.
Is this normal and intended?

[Elecraft] [K2] KAT100 + KPA100 power supply in EC2

2011-01-04 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan

I have built the KAT100 and KPA100 into a custom EC2 housing and it is working
very well,
there is only one little problem in the setting which I do not like. The
combo needs two power
supply cables, one for the high current into the KPA100 (Anderson connectors)
and one for the
KAT100 (round plug like in the K2). I'd like to power the unit with only one
power cable into the
AP connector. Did anybody already find an elegant solution for this? I'd prefer
to have the
necessary cables inside the EC2 not a Y-cable outside.

btw, the EC2 project is making progress. The rear panel is finished, the

  cheers,

not true. There is no problem to control the K3 using the SCS Ptc-2.
Use the Kenwood protocol. trx ty k 38400 A for example will set your Ptc-
2 to 38.400 baud on VFO A and you can scan the frequency list without a
computer running.
The old Ptc-2 uses TTL levels, so you might need a level converter
(MAX232) and with the new Ptc-2pro or USB set the TRX TY to V24.
I have built a SCS Trx-ptc modem inside my K3 and K2.

In addition to this, Airmail after version 3.4 directly supports Elecraft
K2 and K3 transceivers. (also setting the correct mode) You can use either
a direct comport or the Ptc-2 trx control port. I think it was me who
persuaded Jim KE6RK into adding the Elecraft transceivers to the list of
supported radios in Oct. 2008 ;-)

I think I made a small pdf with the necessary settings in the K3 to
operate Pactor. I can say it works excellent if you do it right.

Perhaps someone familiar with the K3 programming could create this and pass
it on as a tutorial, or script or whatever for newbies like myself

I have created two macros for my microphones, Heil headset rear, Icom SM-8

The macro for the Heil is:

The macro for the Icom is:

The problem is that the High / Low setting is toggled and not saved
seperately for the front and rear microphone.
I see two possibilities for the developer to solve it:
either keep it seperately for front / rear or create a dedicated code for
low and high microphone level.
I have also asked for this feature and Wayne's comment was positive. I

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and USB Audio Codec

2010-08-17 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Joe,

I am a bit late for a reply, but anyway.
The way the codec is implemented is (as far I understand it) different and
more straitforward. There is no soundcard in the radio, but the data
stream is directly derived from the IF-DSP.
My friend Gert, OE3ZK described it as follows:

Es wird kein eigener (billig) SoundChip eingesetzt. Die USB Audio CODEC
Aufbereitung erfolgt direkt aus der ZF-DSP der Transceiver. Abgesehen von
den Quarzungenauigkeiten der billig Sound-Chips wird  DSP nicht
kaskadiert, das ist der wesentliche Qualitätsunterschied.

I translate:
There is no (cheap) Soundchip in the radio. The USB Audio Codec is
directly created out of the IF-DSP of the transceiver. There are no
inaccuracies of the cheap soundchip quartz and there is no cascading of
DSP's, that is a significant difference in quality.

I have a block diagram of the IC-7200 on my website, you can see it here:
http://oe9fwv.shacknet.nu/oe9fwv/bilder/IC-7200%20USB.jpg

This is an interesting approach in my opinion and has two major
advantages. Better quality of the signal for soundcard modes independent
from external soundcards, no additional cables and devices for mobile use.
A radio and the computer.
Thats all. Remote control included.

Joe Subich, W4TV-4 [via Elecraft] schrieb am 13 Jul 2010 um 9:17:

I don't trust the quality of an external soundcard of this price.
It might be sufficient for PSK31 but probably not for Winmor. The
Signalink USB is good, but not for 20 bucks.

The USB Audio CODEC integrated circuit in the IC-7000 or IC-7600 has
the same specifications as the USB Audio CODEC in Signalink or a $15
USB headset adapter. There is no benefit to putting audio to digital
conversion in the radio and bringing the audio out using a driver
 dependent protocol.

An integrated USB audio CODEC is nothing more than a gimmick that
provides no performance benefit while limiting user flexibility/choice,
 increasing cost and decreasing reliability.

If one were going to provide digital output, it would be far better
to stream the raw in I/Q data from the DSP's ADC via firewire rather
than push it through two additional A/D and D/A steps and reduce it
to a single channel of audio.

I have not heard of a problem with the DSP in the IC-7200 or 7600.
From what I have heard this is not a real soundcard but the IF passband
after the DSP is sent to the audio codec via USB.
It would make it very easy using the K3 for digital soundcard modes
 without
  another external device.

Bob schrieb am 14 Aug 2010 um 13:52:

Have any of you got your K3 working with an SCS PTCII modem?

yes me ;-)

Mine connects through LINE IN, LINE OUT and PTT. The beta version of
Airmail 3.4.034 has a K3 option and its HF Terminal module puts the K3 in
DATA A mode. But I get only one block of RF on the K3 RF meter regardless
of settings of PSKA and FSKA in Airmail and boosting K3 LINE IN gain.
Changing to USB and widening the filter, with zero CMP, power is fine -- 50
watts -- and connects to PMBOs. No joy with DATA A.

sounds like your line in gain is set to zero.

I'm probably missing something simple -- this my first week with PACTOR.
Just got the modem. Seems odd that Airmail works with the K3 in USB and
not in DATA A. I read that DATA A keeps leaves the compression at zero,
which is required for PACTOR 3, so would like to use it to avoid manually
changing it from voice digital. Any idea what could cause the difference?

Sound card digital modes work fine throgh the same LINE IN and LINE OUT
connections and K3 settings (I use USB). I've had QSOs with MT63, OLIVA
and WINMOR using MIXW and RMS Express.

I'd like to learn which parameter settings you found that you are happy
with (in the K3 and in Airmail).

set your transceiver into DATA A mode, USB, -S activated (MENU SYNC DT
set) then tap Menu and check if Mic Sel is LINE IN. Then adjust Line in
Gain using the Speed / Mic Pot (set to Mic). PTT RLS 012.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PTCIIUSB

2010-08-15 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Richard,

Richard Ferch schrieb am 14 Aug 2010 um 17:46:

When you used USB you said you widened the filter. I'm guessing that was
the key to your success. Try widening the filter in DATA A mode. The filter
in DATA A is centered on 1500 Hz, and the default width is 400 Hz. I don't
know where the PTC II's Pactor tones are centered, but I am guessing they
are outside the DSP filter bandpass at the K3's normal narrow filter
setting. Once you have determined where the PTC II's tones are, you can use
the K3's SHIFT control to re-center the filter on them and then use WIDTH
to widen or narrow the bandwidth as appropriate.

The same is probably true for your other digital modes. A 400 Hz filter
centered on 1500 Hz will not work with MT63, for example, but simply
readjusting the filter settings will allow you to use DATA A for MT63.

The filter width is important but not his problem. He reported that he has
no LINE IN gain. (RF out zero)
Filter width for Pactor 1+2 is 500Hz, center on 1500 is default, but can
be adjusted in the Ptc-2 (tone setting 4 will set the tones to 1400 -
1600Hz)
For Pactor 3 the full SSB bandwidth is needed, so set the filter to 2400.
Center is 1500Hz by default. (again tones 4 - which is set by Airmail and
cannot be changed)

[Elecraft] K3: rear microfone plug problem

2010-03-12 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have the Heil Pro headset plugged into the rear microphone jack. All of
a sudden I got very bad modulation reports, and when I checked my
modulation with the monitor, I could hear a very loud noise even without
speaking into the microphone. When I wiggle the microphone plug, the noise
goes away and the modulation is clear like it should be. It looks like a
loose connection in the microphone jack. Are these connectors prone to
fail?
Has anyone else had this problem and what should I try next?

 http://www.ing-michels.de/hamradio.html

I agree. I use a predecessor of this product, it was sold as a kit once.
I don't know if the algorithm has been improved in the meantime, but my
box works really good. The depth of noise reduction is adjustable with a
pot and it does not reduce the loudness of the signal but only the noise.
At the highest NR setting voices start to sound spacey. I normally use a
medium setting for best S/N effect.
The noise reduction is only noticeable wih weak noisy signals. There is
nearly no effect on S9+20 signals without noise.
My box has one disadvantage, I don't know if this has been changed with
the new product, there is only one channel, so the sub receiver has no NR.
You might need two of them. ($$)

[Elecraft] [K3] Macro vs. voice/CW memories

2010-02-14 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have a problem understanding how this works and what is possible with
the memory buttons M1-M4.
I have created 4 makros whith often needed functions:
switch from front panel to rear panel microphone (2 Macros)
switch monitor off
switch monitor to level 10

I wanted to assign these macros to M4 (Tap/Hold) and M3 (Tap/Hold), which
was successful when I tried it.

Then there is the voice recorder which also saves voice memories to the
buttons M1-M4.

Is this function instead of the macro function? When I accidentally
switched the recorder on with M2, the programmed macro disappeared.
But it is still saved somewhere in the K3, because I can assign it to the
M key again.

Next question: how does the K3 handle the CW memories, when a macro is
programmed to the same key?
I would like to have the CW memories when I am in CW mode, but the macros
when I am in SSB, but I cannot find a way to switch which function is
active.

If macro and voice /cw memory are either / or it would be nice to have a
switch to choose between them ...

Some years ago Pauli EA3BLQ (SK) developed a board that did exactly what
you are asking for. I have never understood why Elecraft did not adopt it
and put it into production as an official K2 option as they did with the
DSP board. I am sure there would be a demand for it even now, after all the
K2 is still a current product. Although I don't use my K2 much now I would
buy one just to fill that gap in its functionality.

I was lucky and got one of these boards and it works just fine.
All information about the circuit diagram and film pictures are available
at Pauli's website, so it would be not too difficult to make the boards.
To create Eagle files it would be necessary to do some reverse
engineering.
I gave this information to Jon already in a private mail.

[Elecraft] [K2] frequency drifting

2010-01-31 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan

this morning I was trying a new antenna for portable use and therefore I
turned my K2 on. When I was first listening I thought I had not connected
the antenna because no sound came out of the radio. I switched it on and
off and suddenly it worked.
Then I listened to a station on 80m and suddenly it was slowly drifting
away - I could follow it with the VFO for some seconds, then it
disappeared completely (the radio went silent) and with a small plop it
was there again on its original frequency. The frequency display did not
move when this happened unless I turned the VFO. This repeated several
times, I switched the radio on and off, no joy, but after a short time, I
guess about half a minute or so the problem had disappeared.
I could make QSO and everything looks ok.
What could this be?

straight key I can recommend PocketDigi to decode the sidetone - it is a
multi-platform multimode decoder available at www.sourceforge.net for
free. I use it on the PC and on my PPC and it works fine.

Maybe most people simply don't complain? I have lots of friends with
K3s (I mean LOTS) and I am not aware of even one who does NOT notice
the delay. Of course, all my friends are contesters, so maybe we are
 a picky group. :-)

I found it better to do an on-air adjustment with someone who knows my
voice AND is a contester. They know how it should sound. I go on blind
faith that what they tell me to do is working to my benefit...works so far.

I do notice the delay and it is a reason for me not to use Monitor when
QSO'ing. The delay irritates me when I am talking. I find MON very useful
to adjust my modulation though with TX off, it is a great feature.
Listening to records of my modulation on the air is better of course, but
for a coarse estimation how it sounds it is nice to have. (in the
direction of would miss it if it were not there)

[Elecraft] T1: can I switch into TUNE with the K2's tune button?

2010-01-11 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have built the T1, and find it an amazing instrument. I would like to
use it also with the K2, which in my case has no QRP tuner built in,
because there is no room left, I decided to build the SCS Ptc-2 into the
rig instead of the battery and tuner.
I would like to switch the T1 into tune mode without using the Tune button
of the T1, but instead use the Tune button of the K2.
Is this possible somehow? I think there is the possiblity to switch the T1
to Tune with the remote jack. But how do I get the appropriate signal out
of the K2?

TIA ,

[Elecraft] switch to another microphone using a macro?

2010-01-08 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have an Icom SM-8 microphone attached to my K3's front panel and a Heil
Pro Headset with HC 4 element plugged into the rear panel. Depending on
working conditions and my mood I sometimes prefer one or the other
microphone.
The procedure requires to change Bias and sensitivity in the microphone
menu which takes quite a time.
I'd like to create a makro so I can switch from one
microphone to the other with a shortcut. I did not find the necessary
commands.
Is this possible at all?

Re: [Elecraft] switch to another microphone using a macro?

2010-01-08 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Dick,

thank you very much for your detailed description. It works like a charm,
the only thing I had to change was SWT12, which can be omitted, because
the K3 remembers the BIAS setting for the rear and front panel microphone.

It might be a wish for future firmware versions to make the high/low
setting stick to the front or rear panel too, this would make the macro
foolproof.

Your help is much appreciated!

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] how much harder to build: K2 vs K1?

2010-01-01 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi,

I can only speak for the K2 which I built. The key point is your soldering
skills. Next point is patience and following the instructions.
If you want to see my building pathway you can find it here:

http://www.qsl.net/oe9fwv/k2.html

from the dates you can see how long it took me to finish the task.

One idea someone already wrote on the list is building a small kit like
the XG2 or something like this and see if your soldering skills are
already sufficient or need improvement

And if you plan to start: I sugest to look at the rework eliminator kit. I
missed this point unfortunately.

 Hi all,

 I'm considering building a K2, but here's my situation. I'd be a first-time
kit builder, I've never had the opportunity to build and the K2 looks like
it'd be great fun and a great learning experience. The K1 sounds like it's
the better choice for a first-time build, but the K2 matches what I need in
 a radio a lot better.

So I guess my general question is, how much harder would a K2 be to build
over a K1? I.e. what are the gotchas with the K2 for a novice builder
 that aren't in a K1?

I know this is kind of vague, but that's the only way I can think of to ask
the question. I think I'd still do OK if I took my time and got good tools
(I just ordered the recommended weller soldering station).

 Thanks,

my scheme is to put the needle point on my trusty WTCP, remove the leads

the smt project, quickly as in QUICKLY touch the point to the leads.

I do not don't recommend it, although it might work. But it will heat up
the battery and you must avoid by all means that solder flows around the
edge of the battery and shortens it. When I once tried it the coin cell
exploded in my fingers and since that time I know what tinnitus is.

You might find the leaded cmos battery as a spare part or maybe you have a
dealer around who has the equipment to weld leads to a coin cell. (we have
such a dealer 30km away).
Another possibility: maybe you have enough room to insert a battery holder

To add another possibility, I use Total Commander (www.ghisler.com)

It is a decent filemanager and has an FTP Client built in (in addition to many

I had to setup the Elecraft FTP site once, choose the beta firmware directory,
choose my
download directory, save all.
The rest is open the predefined link, look if there is something new, and if
yes mark and copy.
(1 click on the beta firmware + press F5 key)

[Elecraft] K3: infrared receiver for wireless paddle

2009-11-07 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have a CW paddle with an IR wireless transmitter (Palm Paddle from Palm
Radio) and it
works great with the K2. Palm radio provides a manual where to solder the wires
to the K2. I
would like to add the reveiver also to my K3. I need the pins for paddle right,
paddle left,
ground and VCC (everything from 5-15V is ok for the receiver)
Link to the product is here: http://www.palm-radio.de/english/english.html
It would be nice if everything could be soldered to the downside of the main
board of the K3
like in the K2. Maybe one of you can read circuit diagrams better than me and
can give me a
hint where are the best solder point to attach the wires.

thanks in advance,

[Elecraft] P3 wishlist

2009-10-07 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
not knowing if this is technically feasable, I'd like to have a port for a
pointing device (mouse, trackball or these nice heavy tuning devices you
can use to navigate in google earth or SDR transciever)

regarding the screen, it would be nice to be able to use it for decoding
digital modes, especially those already supported by the K3:
point and click on the signal in waterfall display, decoded text in a simple
terminal program and a line for keyboard input - like the PSK programs for
the PC.

The option of an integrated power supply would make a ultra compact
portable combo - with bluetooth connection to a netbood nearly wireless.

I'd also support the idea with band buttons which was already discussed
earlier on the list.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: proposed SSB coarse tuning rate change

2009-09-30 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
Hi Wayne,

Wayne Burdick schrieb am 29 Sep 2009 um 10:29:

We've had many requests to provide an 0.5-kHz VFO tuning step size in SSB
modes. I'd like to substitute this for the current 2.5 kHz selection. The
new set of steps sizes for SSB would then be:

0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0

Most operators probably don't find 2.5 kHz steps to be particularly
useful. 0.5 kHz, on the other hand, seems to be a useful lowest-common-
denominator for tuning the SSB band segments.

Each mode can have up to 4 step sizes with the K3's present per-mode data
structure. I could add more step sizes, but that would require a much more
 extensive change.

Please let me know if you have a compelling requirement for 2.5 kHz
 steps.

I dont really care if the last step is 2.5 or 5 kHz. I think 5 is better for a
fast move (QSY). My
wish is that I can choose 0.5 kHz for the fast tuning rate with the clarifier
knob. Most stations
are sitting either at .0 or .5, and it is nice to check the band with the RIT
knob and fine tune with
the main VFO (which is rarely necessary in fact) This is what I use very often.
YMMV.

Re: [Elecraft] QTH.Net versus Yahoo Groups

2009-05-14 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan

I subscribe to the Elecraft email digest on QTH.NET, and also the FT-2000
digest on Yahoo Groups. Maybe nobody feels the same way, but I find the
Elecraft digest very hard to read. Each Elecraft digest comes with many
email attachments, each of which has to be opened individually. The lead
email shows the number and title of all the postings (the last one had 54),
but the numbers aren't given in the subject for the other attachments,
which makes finding them problematic. I'd like to read the postings, but
doing so is too time consuming under the current setup, and I don't want to
load up my In Box with individual postings.

with a decent email client (I use Pegasus Mail) you can read the Elecraft
Digest like individual mails. You can even sort it on time, sender, thread,
subject...
I cannot imagine a better way to read a digest than in this way.
(mime digest)
The yahoo digest on the other hand needs to be digested by an external
program (thanks to Stephen Knight for this) to be converted into a mime
digest.

ymmv, but with a decent mail client you will be set IMO.

 necessary.

 * DATA MODE ALC METERING: ALC metering for DATA-A and AFSK-A
modes has been adjusted to make the transmit audio level easier to
 adjust.
As before, the recommended audio level for transmission is 4 to 5 bars. 3
bars will appear as soon the minimum required level for good S/N ratio has
 been reached.

I tested the new firmware with my K3 + Ptc-2 TRX modem built inside the
K3 and I think you have made a good improvement with the latest firmware
2.82.
The output measured on my LP-100 meter is in a 5% range close to the
power setting of the K3. I had to set the LINE IN GAIN higher than before, it
is now at 20, before it was at 12. My output settings in the TRX-PTC
modem are set to 1000mV for PSKA and 800 mV for FSKA. TXG VCE is
set to 0.0dB This combination gives me the recommanded 4 bars of ALC.
Throughput is good as far I can tell - I'll have to check this in the evening
with better conditions to the RMS oe3xec which I can connect on 80m in
distance of 280 nautical miles.

thank you very much, that's what I like with you and the K3. It's getting

2009-01-31 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Wayne,

wayne burdick schrieb am 30 Jan 2009 um 13:29:

Using the MAIN antenna for the subreceiver switches in a -3 dB pad,
which is required to split the path to the two receivers. This results in
about a 3 dB signal attenuation in both. This may be part of what you're
 hearing.

There also may be slight differences in overall path gain between the two
receivers, even when configured identically. Here are some contributing
 factors:

 1. band-pass filter alignment and losses
 2. 1st mixer loss
 3. crystal filter loss
 4. crystal filter ripple
 5. physical alignment of the SUB AF control (when used as main/sub
 BALANCE)
 6. ears

It's quite plausible that overall receive gain could, therefore, differ by
a few dB between main and sub receivers.

You could use the K3's built-in true-RMS AF voltmeter functions to
determine the exact amount, on each band (AFV/dBV).

I think I need some help with this.
I have connected a noise gernerator to my ANT1 and I see AFV floating
between 622 and 702 with SUB engaged, and 1578 and 1719 without SUB.
(this was on 3.670 kHz)

hi Wayne,

thank you for your answer and suggestion but - the difference in volume is
much less than 10db. When I switch from Main to Sub the sound in my
head shifts about 10 or 20 deg to the left. With the balance potentiometer I
can correct it of course. First I thought my ears are different, but if I
change
the orientation of my headphones it is shifting to the other side. The main

I have been listening with the stock 2.7 filters in Main and Sub btw.

The SM-8 has two connectors and a switch, so you can use it for 2 different

only one common wire for up and down, and I think it is probably not
compatible with the K3. Any comment on this would be appreciated.

My Mic settings for the SM-8 are FPL-BIAS.
For the Heil HC-5 I use RPH.

I found that changing the mic level for the front connector also changes it for
the rear connector. If I may add a wish for future firmware updates, it would
be nice if the K3 could save this setting for each connector. It would be
easier to switch from one microphone to the other. Bias is already stored

The MC-50 at the 600 ohm setting is speced for -76 dBm

MH2 is in the range of -45 to -55 dBm - that means you will
  need 20 to

All microphones are not created equal, and do not have

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Front/Rear MIC Input Level

2009-01-12 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Don, Merv,

thank you for testing with your HC-5 element!
yes I am using the latest Beta firmware. I use comp 20 and mic gain 20.
when I push mic gain up to 60, I get a little more ALC reading, but never
over 7 bars, but not more output. VCE gain is set to 2.0, I have the feeling
that my voice sounds more natural when I don't drive MIC GAIN over 25.
(in monitor). My LP100 wattmeter shows peaks with 100 W out with this
setting. (same as CW) From this point of view all seems o.k. Do you have
any official statement from Elecraft regarding the ALC reading?

 Werner, Merv,

In that case I do suspect something is wrong. Can I assume you are
running the latest firmware? There was a change in the ALC and the
recommended 'number of bars' about 3 months ago which increased the
normal 'number of bars'. If you are back-level I recommend you
upgrade to the latest beta and try it again.

One other consideration is how far away from the mic are you speaking
 - if using the headset, the microphone should be a max of only 2
inches (5 cm) away from your mouth, and the flat side of the
mouthpiece should face your mouth. With a desk mic, it should be
placed about the same distance from the mouth as well. Those mics are
designed to 'close-talk' which helps with pickup of room noise too,
and the microphone output drops off dramatically if you speak
 off-axis.

I normally operate with the Elecraft MD2, but I went down to the
workbench and brought up my D-104 that has been modified with an HC-5
element. I plugged it in a tried it at the same settings as I used
with my MD2 (but with bias off) and could not talk it up to any ALC
bars at all without shouting, but I did see an occasional bar or two
on the CMP meter.. I switched to FP.H and still had to increase the
mic gain up to 43 before I could see 7 bars on voice peaks with normal
speech, like Hello from W3FPR. My compression was set at 23 for all
 those tests.

From that experience, I must conclude that any who say they run with
the mic range on Low and a mic gain setting of 23 for their HC5
element either have more mic gain than my K3 or they are shouting into
the mic, or have a mic preamp in the AF input - no offense to anyone
intended, but my K3 just does not behave that way with the HC5 element
 (unamplified).

I do consider my setting to be in an acceptable range because the
HC4/5 elements are the lowest output mics that I will likely use with
 my K3.

I cannot get 7 bars on the ALC scale whatever I try. When I whistle I can get
6 bars, but not with normal voice. Power out is 80 W when I whistle, 100W

Do you think there is something wrong with my K3? I get good reports btw.

[Elecraft] K3 + TrxPtc

2009-01-10 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Wayne,

we have had a discussion about adding a Pactor controller to the K3 earlier.

Now when my K3 was complete with all parts I wanted to add I jumped in
and added a TrxPtc. There is enough room behind the IO and XVR boards
to add the TrxPtc board. Behind the main board I had to drill one 3mm hole
into the KRX3 top cover to attach a standoff for the Bluetooth module. (the
hole for the second standoff is already there)
I used the hole for the REF input to add an SMA antenna socket for the
bluetooth antenna. To switch the Ptc on and off I had to drill a hole into the
back panel beside the fans, just below the 20A switch. Above this fuse I had
to drill another hole for a 5mm Duo LED for a visual feedback on the status
of the Ptc and the BT connection.
All in all the task was not easy but it could be done without damage to the K3
and it works great. The K3 does a really good job in Pactor with a clean
signal and vy good RX quality which gives a fast throughput especially in
Pactor 3 mode. I'll look at the transmitted spectrum later, I don't have the
necessary equipment.

I want to thank Detlef DL1GJ, who was very helpful with sharing his
experience (he was the first I know who built the TrxPtc into the K3) and he
also gave me the SMA connector + antenna) and to Martin, DL1ZAM from
SCS for technical assistance and Gary from Elecraft support who
encouraged me to drill the holes ;-)

I really have to bow my back before you and your team for this wonderful
radio, which is so well constructed that even an amateur like me is able to
add something for his needs - and it works!

Re: [Elecraft] Six meter birdies.

2009-01-07 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi all,

I am also suffering from birdies especially (but not only) on 6m.
I have them on the main receiver and on the subreceiver, but on different
frequencies. (found them on 40m and 20m too)
Many of them are low volume and don't bother me in real life, but some are
really loud (up to S6) and show a microfonic effect when I tap on the cover
of the K3. On the loudest one I can also hear a ticking sound when I turn the
VFO back and forth over the birdie reagion. The intensity can be tuned with
touching or taping on the synthesizer board and sometimes touching the
koax cables makes a difference.

Two friends of me with K3's also have similar birdies, one worse, one less.
One K3 from another ham friend does not show them.

Of course all my coax cables are connected, the shield of the cables is ok
and all screws of the K3 housing are tight. Different routing of the coax
cables does not help, and btw, with the limited space after adding the KRX3
there are not so many possibilities left to route the cables.

 Wes,

From what you have said these birdies are being generated inside the
 K3, if
I am right to assume that only the power supply and nothing else
except the dummy antenna load is connected to your K3, and that
turning your Icom IC-R10 on or off makes no difference to any birdies'
 level or frequency.

I do wonder if you have a fault in your K3 when you say 'so many
birdies', I get the impression that something is unstable on 6m but
perhaps not on the lower frequency bands. There might be a poor solder
connection to a bypass capacitor for example, which could result in
problems on 6m but not on the lower frequency bands certainly if two
or more capacitors are used in parallel,or some SMD capacitor has
failed due to mechanical stress. It might be worthwhile to
 troubleshoot.

Some of these internal birdies that you are hearing are probably
legitimate members of the birdie family created by the receiver's
spurious response(s) hearing one or more of the receiver's
oscillators, or their products. The frequency of these birdies can be
predicted and their level can vary greatly between identical
receivers, also the routing of internal cables can become fussy if
shielding is inadequate or RF grounds 'float'. However this latter
issue is best left to the designer.

[Elecraft] KRX3 in action

2008-09-26 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
good morning,

the KRX3 arrived and I installed it yesterday. After doing the VCO calibration
and filter settings it is working fine.
I have observed two things that are not clear to me so I wanted to ask if this
is the same at your K3's.

When I switch SUB on and I have the antenna shared between the main RX
and the sub RX and both are exactly on the same frequency I can hear a
strange stereo sound in the headphones. It sounds like the signal is
moving in my head from left to right. It reminds me to a zero beat at about 1
hz. Is this normal?

Second: I have a relative strong birdy (S3-4) at 7120 khz which is
microfoning when I tap on the K3. It is only present in USB!
There is another one with lower intensity (S1) at 14.185 - no microfoning
when I tap. The birdy on 6m that I had befor I added the KRX3 has
disappeared completely here.

Alexandr Kobranov schrieb am 26 Sep 2008 um 9:23:

are the birdies dependent on bandwith also?

yes they are. I can see them on the Panadapter very easy, and they jump
aside when I change XFIL:

I have had similar problem with ma K3 base unit and replacing of RX
mixer - small board, the same applied in KRX3 solved this.

ok I'll try this.

So my recommendation - swap RX mixer boards between base and KRX3 and
compare results. I is what I will try is this case.

I get the loudest birdie when I touch the relay or toroid on the K3SYN.

About sound main/sub - what is used XFIL? if 5 poles what is offset
 differenciies?

I switched the filters in the main and sub receiver but it did not change this
sound. I think it could be a AGC effect. I have the feeling that with AGC off
the effect is less.

If 5 poles, try to little bit change offset for one of them and compare.
this did not change anything. It has to do with AGC I think.

I have my KRX3 just on USPS so not able to test here directly.
I am vy interested what you find when you have it installed!

I found another anomality: if sub rx and main rx are linked together, this
does not affect the coarse tuning with the RIT knob. Only the main VFO is
tuned and you have to press AB to have the two VFO's on the same
frequency again. Maybe it is intended?

I built my K3 about 2 months ago and have now made a couple of thousand
QSOs with it and am very satisfied.

Question: Should I upload the latest software?

yes.

What is the latest NON BETA version that is stable and works?

it will display in the Elecraft Utility program when you start it and look for
updates.

What is the latest BETA version and should I go for it?

you can find the non Beta and Beta version on Elecraft's ftp server.
ftp.elecraft.com

 What improvements/differences can I expect?

you find a file called hfwnotes.rtf in the zip file of the firmware.

The latest beta is 3.34.

[Elecraft] TRX frequency offset with -S parameter

2008-07-04 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I am trying the latest beta firmware with my K3 in Pactor mode.
Like in a former try I encountered a problem, when I activate the -s
Parameter in DATA A USB mode.
My transceiver is sending 2.5 kHz higher than the dial display says.
With the first try all was ok. Then I started to try different PTT RLS
settings,
and suddenly my automatic tuner did not tune anymore. I discouvered that
the signal out of my K3 was broad and distorted.
I switch off and on, the signal was clean again and the smartuner did his job,
but now the frequency offset appeared.

My K3 speaker performs flawlessly and puts out wonderful audio until NR is

I find these resonances disappear when using NR on external speakers. I
owe an apology to Lyle Johnson for blaming the problem on noise reduction
 parameters. Roy Morris W4WFB K3 #323

the same problem here, and yes it is a resonance from the speaker and the
K3 cover. When I find time I'll have to add some rubber washers or so to
calm it.

[Elecraft] [K3] how connect a Pactor modem to the K3?

2008-06-15 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi all,
has anybody connected a Ptc-2 to the K3 and how this was done?
I think I could use Line in / Line out and PTT in.
Line is stereo, should I use the tip? or connect tip and ring?

any comments on how this should be done and how does it work?

2008-06-14 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
Gill,

It is at least from #656 because my unit was affected too.
The mod is easy done with the instructions from Elecraft.

Gill W4RYW schrieb am 13 Jun 2008 um 18:47:

If you have a serial no between 660 782 you need to do the mod for
grounding the front panel mike connector.

[Elecraft] K3: NR volume low

2008-05-22 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I have the impression that with the NR engaged the overall volume is much
lower than without. Is there a possibility to adjust the audio volume / gain in
the NR settings somewhere?
I have seen this in the K2 DSP for rtty mode.

Next question: 2 of my friends who tried the K3 this afternoon think that
there is a significant delay in the monitor output. I don't use monitor in
normal operation, I only use it to adjust my mic settings, but they make use
of it a lot, and felt somehow irritated by the delay.

Re: [Elecraft] Help with cheap headset and K2

2008-05-19 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
hi Bill,

I have tried a Plantronics Computer Headset in the past with my K2.
I made an adapter like you did but with the internal 5V bias.
Audio reports were worse than with the dynamic Kenwood microphone I
used before.
I tried this special microphone because G4ILO recommended it on his
homepage. (http://www.g4ilo.com/k2_headset.html). I had hoped that I could
make better use of the VOX in the K2, but it was not good enough for my
low voice.
In the meantime I connected it to the K3 and listened to myself and now I
know why the reports were bad. The frequency response of the microphone
is not good for this purpose.
In the K3 I could compensate it with the equalizer, but together with the K2
you are probably lost.
Now I am waiting for the Sennheiser PC 150 now, maybe this is better.
My usual headset is the Heil Proset with HC5 element. The reason why I am
looking for an alternative is the weight of the Heil headset and the earpads
make a pressure on the arms of my glasses and this hurts after some time.

Just for grins I bought a cheap Cyber Acoustics computer headset to
use with my K3 when it arrives. Others have said they got good
reports with their K3 and this headset which uses an electret mic and
a 3.5MM stereo mini plug. Not wanting to cut off the plug which fits
into the back of the K3 I made up an adapter for my K2 using an inline
stereo jack, an 8 pin mike plug and a 9 volt battery through a 5K
resistor to power the mic. My K2 is wired for the Kenwood mics and I
don't want to power the mic from the rig. I wired the grounds to the
base of the plug, 9V DC through the 5K resistor to the middle and the
mic positive to the tip. It works but my reports with the K2 have not
been very good. I also made up an adapter for my Drake TR7 and
reports on that rig are fine. Am I doing something wrong with the K2?
I know little about electret mics and maybe I am using too much
voltage or the wrong resistor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If I can't get it to work the headset was only about $15 shipped so no
 big deal.
