[Elecraft] [K2] Rework Eliminators(TM) Revisited

2016-05-04 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Now that both of our K2 Rework Eliminator(TM) kits are out of production,
Ken and I are considering a new circuit board that would include our Option
Bypass Headers and Internal Mic Adaptor products. I'm guessing the retail
price for the pair of kits would be in the $60 to $80 range. (We would not
offer the kits for sale individually.)

Please email me at webmaster .. @ .. unpcbs .. dot .. com if you are
interested. If the response is promising, I'll add an automated pre-order
waiting list page to our website. Note that we would require your advance
payment, before committing to production.

[Elecraft] [K3] 700 Hz Filters Are Back in Stock!

2016-05-04 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
To order, please visit http://www.unpcbs.com/backdoor/

This is our first batch since INRAD changed hands last October. Most of
them have already been spoken for, so they'll likely sell out fairly
quickly.

There's typically a 14-week manufacturing lead-time -- so if we choose to
commission a subsequent production run -- the earliest a next batch could
possibly arrive would be in the August-September timeframe.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] 8 or 5 Pole cw filters

2015-01-14 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
K8XF writes ...

As a cw opr ... I would like to know ...

Hi Mike,

1) If you are considering using the optional sub-RX for diversity
reception, then you might prefer INRAD's 8-pole filters simply because they
are already matched, i.e. their center frequencies are much tighter than
Elecraft's 5-pole filters. (We're talking about tens of Hz for the INRAD
filters compare to more like a kHz for the Elecraft filters!)

2) All SSB, CW, and digital TX is done via the normal SSB filter (either
2.8 kHz 8-pole or 2.7 kHz 5-pole). Thus many guys will choose the 8-pole
2.8 kHz filter, that it might produce a slightly cleaner transmitted CW
signal. This is more important if you run 500 Watts as opposed to 10 Watts.

3) Due to the K3's architecture, it is sometimes desirable to have a
crystal filter whose width is close to your DSP passband setting.
Specifically when working a weak signal that's close to a strong one.
Otherwise, if the strong signal is inside the passband of your crystal
filter, it can cause AGC pumping and render the weak signal unreadable.
Your needs in this regard will depend on local band conditions.

4) INRAD's 250 Hz filter is actually closer to 370 Hz wide at 6 dB down,
while their 400 Hz filter is about 435 Hz wide. That's a difference of
roughly 21%, which IMHO is too similar to justify installing both.

5) In addition to the INRAD CW filters offered by Elecraft (1000 Hz, 400
Hz, and 250 Hz), INRAD also offers 500 Hz via their website. See
http://www.inrad.net/home.php?cat=140

6) In addition to the INRAD CW filters offered by Elecraft and INRAD,
WB2ART and I also offer 700 Hz. Note that this is a special order item
which is currently in stock, but which usually entails a preorder waiting
list and a 14-week manufacturing lead-time. See http://www.unpcbs.com

7) I suspect that guys who have the P3 (panadapter) tend to set a tighter
passband and in turn prefer narrower crystal filters.

[Elecraft] [K3] 700 Hz 8-Pole INRAD Filters

2014-12-16 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
The filters are in stock for the holidays; get them while they last.

Please note that there's a good chance this will be the last batch! However
even if it isn't, it will definitely be the last time we try to offer them
from stock. Translation: if there is a next batch, there will be a 14-week
(production lead-time) wait from the date you place your order, until your
filter(s) ship to you.

Cost is $145 + SH, where ...

o USA SH = $6
o Canada SH = $21
o International SH = $25

[Elecraft] [KX3] Specmanship ... making claims that have no basis in reality; hype.

2014-09-15 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
After several months of preparation, Adrian Ryan (5B4AIY) recently
conducted a head-to-head engineering evaluation of several aftermarket KX3
heatsinks. His findings dispelled the long-running best-performing
claim of the PAE heatsink as unfounded, yet this claim is still being made
by the PAE website!

What's more, now there's a second measureable claim The PAE-Kx31
offers the best performance value in any aftermarket KX3 heatsink,
delivering more cooling per $ than all others. which probably isn't true
either, although there's no way to know for sure based on the scant evidence
presented. And given PAE's (zero of one) track record thus far regarding
the validity of its measureable claims, the chances of this latest one
actually being true are at best 50-50.

(BTW, I know of one KX3 owner -- who prefers to remain anonymous -- who
needed to upgrade from the PAE heatsink to a Cooler KX(TM) heatsink. Thus,
even if this new best performance value claim happens to be true, that
fact won't console KX3 owners who find that the PAE heatsink fails to keep
their radio from overheating!)

Curiously, the only corroborating evidence for this newest claim is an
impressive looking graph -- see http://goo.gl/6Zr4gW -- which appears to
have been derived from Adrian's test results using a methodology that can
best be described as a concoction of hand-picked data, analytical fallacy,
smoke, and mirrors. It certainly is interesting that PAE can make this new
claim based on Adrian's findings, while continuing to make their original
best-performing claim, which the same findings have since discredited.

Additional concerns about the validity of this newest claim include:

1) Cooler KX(TM) heatsinks are offered in three grades of finish (raw,
undercoated, and painted) to best serve KX3 owners interested in getting the
best performance for their dollar, as well as for anyone who wants to
operate in direct sunlight or prefers to paint their heatsink some other
color. The raw Lite model costs 23 percent less than the painted Lite
model, while the raw Plus model costs 30 percent less than the painted Plus
model; yet PAE has conveniently excluded the raw and undercoated finish
options!

2) No shipping costs or calculations are cited, only mysterious final
results. Furthermore, there are numerous international shipping choices and
the cost of international shipping varies by country.

3) Although they are repeatable, Adrian's test results don't come anywhere
close to quantifying heatsink performance. To use his findings as a basis
for any kind of measureable claim is wrong beyond comprehension!

--- - - - --- --- - - - ---

With regard to the comment We see now why they changed the testing
goals. ... the reality is that Adrian's (purely qualitative) test results
do not support the kind of presentation that was envisioned.

Here's a dumb question ... does 1° deg C. really matter?

--- - - - ---

Al,

On the contrary, you've asked an excellent although slightly ambiguous
question. Are you referring to the one degree C difference between the top
three heatsinks, or are you referring to the roughly 1 degree C difference
between the factory heatsink and the heatsink that came in last place?

FYI, the purpose of this testing was primarily to determine how the
various offerings compared to one another. In addition, Adrian didn't want
to unnecessarily overstress his PAs in the process. Had he chosen higher
power levels, then the separation between each of the candidates would have
been greater. In fact, it very well might have been possible to break the
tie for second place.

Keep in mind that this testing was particularly challenging due to the
KX3 firmware's 1 degree C displayed temperature resolution.

BTW, I know that the PAs generated 8.5 Watts of waste heat running 5
Watts out on 20 meters, and I used a polynomial approximation to estimate
that they generated 9.3 Watts of waste heat while running 0.5 Watts out on 6
meters! (No, that's not a typo!)

73,
Gary KI4GGX
webmaster http://www.ve7fmn.ca/

P.S. Don, Adrian's test report clearly states that he conducted all of his
tests in still air and that the ambient temperature remained between a
half degree of 25 degrees C.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] A Comparative Performance Assessment (of Aftermarket KX3 Heatsinks)

2014-09-02 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Dennis (KD7CAC) recently posted ...

I find it curious that there was no mention ... of what surface coating or
surface finishing process the tested heat sinks had been subjected to. ...
I'm also curious if Fred's lower cost version is still the original size
...

--- - - - ---

Hi Dennis,

The details regarding finish were omitted from his report for the sake
of brevity. In fact, Adrian evaluated four Cooler KX(TM) configurations,
one each painted and unpainted Lite and Plus model. The reason this
information wasn't included, is that the coating had no discernable impact
on performance.

Addressing your questions about size ... Fred offers two models: his
original (Lite) model is 1.25 inches deep and his newer Plus model (which
was introduced back in April as Tropical) was originally 1.5 deep.
However, in July he increased its depth by 7% to 1.59 inches. And yes,
Fred's Matte Black finish is electrostatically applied / heat cured power
coat paint, although the entire bottom (heat transfer) surface is unpainted.

Fred also offers two choices of unpainted finish: a premium Clear
Chromate Conversion undercoat; and raw aluminum (straight from the mill).

73,
Gary KI4GGX
webmaster http://www.ve7fmn.ca/

P.S. I encouraged Fred to rebrand his Tropical model as Plus, after one
reviewer (on the eHam website) seemed to imply that the heatsink could be
operated in direct sunlight without concern. Intuition suggests that an
unpainted finish would be preferable for operating under intense tropical
sun, although even that should be avoided (IMHO).

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] A Comparative Performance Assessment (of Aftermarket KX3 Heatsinks)

2014-09-02 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Don (W3FPR) recently wrote ...

why does still air have to be in quotes?

Hi Don,

That was done so the wording in still air wouldn't seem like a
grammatical error. More importantly, here's an excerpt from a recent email
from Adrian, addressing your inquiry regarding ambient temperature:

The ambient temperature was constantly monitored on the test bench by the
transceiver using a very sensitive aviation anemometer. This instrument can
measure airflow down to fractions of a knot, and does so by monitoring
temperature changes of a heated thermistor, as well as using a ducted fan
whose speed is measured via a pulse-counting technique for higher speeds. I
managed to keep the ambient temperature stable throughout the test to within
an indicated 0.5 degree C, so I was quite pleased with the actual test
results.

--- - - - ---

I certainly could have included details like this in the final report,
but tried to avoid providing too much information, and also tried to limit
the document to two pages without resorting to a tiny font. More
importantly, IMHO Adrian's test environment and methodology were sufficient
for his intended objective, which was to compare the performance of the
various aftermarket offerings to one another, for the purpose of ranking
them. Yes, higher resolution temperature measurements would have made the
results more meaningful; but that evaluation is left as an exercise for the
reader.

BTW, check out http://www.ve7fmn.ca/faqs/#about_testing for a
description and photo of the setup Adrian had used for his original
comparison of the factory/stock heatsink and his Cooler KX(TM) Lite, which
used an entirely different methodology.

[Elecraft] [KX3] A Comparative Performance Assessment (of Aftermarket KX3 Heatsinks)

2014-09-01 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
An independent head-to-head thermal performance evaluation of several
aftermarket KX3 heatsinks was recently concluded by Adrian Ryan (5B4AIY),
who holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The
clear winner of his testing is the Cooler KX PlusT, which is produced by
VE7FMN of Simply Better Manufacturing! This means claims that the PAE-Kx31
is best-performing are not substantiated by fact! (Actually, such claims
are hereby dispelled by fact!)

Adrian's test report can be found at ...
http://www.ve7fmn.ca/this-is-cool/pdfs/performance_page/head-to-head.pdf

--- - - - ---

In other news ...

1) The Cooler KXT installation guide has (finally) been published.

2) Tech-Note #3 (PEM nut thread repair) was completely rewritten.

3) I recently added some of the nicest customer-submitted photos to Fred's
homepage. Thanks to Matt (N2IDW) and Ed (W6ELA).

4) Before too long I hope to implement instant checkout for most if not
all Cooler KXT customers. What makes this task particularly challenging, is
that unlike the USPS (which offers flat-rate international mail) the cost of
shipping via Canada Post varies by country.

[Elecraft] [KX3] What Your Dollar Actually Buys You -- was JT/heatsinks

2014-08-05 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Yesterday, WA4PSC wrote ... increased key-down time at 12 watts is a nice
bonus for digital modes.

--- - - - ---

Recently I've been helping to facilitate the independent performance
evaluation of several of the aftermarket KX3 heatsinks mentioned here over
the past few months. The quantitative results of this evaluation (which
will be published in a few weeks) will enable KX3 owners to separate fact
from hype, and compare the various offerings based on the ratio of their
performance versus their cost.

Elaborating ... you might want to know what your dollar buys you in terms of
heat dissipation. For example, if two competing products differ in price by
a factor of 2X, but their performance differs by a factor of 4X, then the
more expensive heatsink might be your better choice since it offers 2X
greater performance per dollar!

Note that the performance versus cost ratio doesn't tell the whole story,
since you might not need the additional 2X performance benefit the more
expensive heatsink provides. Even so, you still might be able to justify
the additional cost based on the extended product life that's anticipated
because of the additional cooling capacity!

What is substantially increasing your KX3's operating life worth to you?

Stay tuned!

I am thrilled to announce that I now have a website that's worthy of my
premier Cooler KXT product line, of aftermarket KX3 heatsinks. I invite you

to visit and check out my products up close; their superiority is evident!
The URL is http://www.ve7fmn.ca/

Especially note that the performance of my heatsinks has been
independently verified by my customers, who include: a Physicist and an
Electrical Engineer.

Even though this is my site's grand opening, it is still evolving, with
new material being added almost hourly. So, I invite you to stop by again
soon to see what's new.

My first production run sold out around the end of May and the second
run is currently in paint. Painted units will begin shipping next week,
while Clear Chromate Conversion undercoated and raw/unfinished units are

already shipping from stock.

I hope to reduce if not completely eliminate the need for backordering

[Elecraft] Apology

2014-06-26 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Sorry for my previous post. I thought it was an off Reflector reply
directly to VE7FMN. (Apparently, that's what happens when you're CC'd on a
Reflector post!)

--- - - - ---

While I'm writing, I heard from INRAD a few hours ago that the next batch of
700 Hz K3 filters has shipped from Japan well ahead of the date we were
expecting.  The batch still needs to:  clear customs; be processed by INRAD;
and travel from the west coast to Ken -- so the best I can say right now, is
that Ken will have them in roughly two or three weeks.

This is an especially small batch as our aim is to squeeze in yet another
production run in time for the December holiday buying season. My point
being that they'll probably sell out much quicker than usual, possibly by
early August. Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ for full details.

IMHO the only thing that matters is what the buyer wants. If building
appeals to them more than operating, then they'll be drawn to the K2 without
your prodding. If they do choose the K2, please be sure to invite them to
visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ to learn about Rework Eliminator(TM)
aftermarket K2 accessories, and the Option-Ready alternate K2 assembly
method they make possible.

--- - - - ---

While I'm writing, (and kind of on the subject of the KX3) I'd like to
invite everyone to check out a website I've been creating for Fred Meier,
VE7FMN. It describes his Cooler KX(TM) line of painstakingly designed and
meticulously crafted aftermarket KX3 heatsinks.

I've only been working on the site for a little more than a week, so it
is still very much a work in progress. In particular, I expect to have a
new ordering webpage up within about 36 hours. If you want to order one of
Fred's heatsinks, you might wish to wait until the new ordering webpage goes
live, as it will dramatically simplify the ordering process and offer
several new optional accessories. Best of all the short wait for the new
page won't delay delivery of your heatsink, since the next batch just went
to paint today (a two week process), and won't ship until early July.

If you email me off Reflector, I will let you know the moment the new
ordering page goes live.

[Elecraft] [K3] Cutoff for the Next 700 Hz Filter Production Run

2014-06-01 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
The cutoff for getting in on the next batch is 1200 UTC Tuesday June
3rd. Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com/frontdoor/ to submit your paid
order by then, to ensure you don't miss out.

Note:

1) This batch will arrive in early September.

2) We will only be requesting a handful of extra filters this time, i.e.
beyond the number of paid orders we have in hand. As a result, this
production run will probably sell out by July.

3) The reason we are requesting so few extra filters, is that we want to
squeeze in another production run before the (winter solstice) holiday
shopping season.

4) Our long-term plan has that subsequent run arriving the 2nd or 3rd week
of November. Most likely it will be the last run of 2014.

P.S. Thanks to Mike Harris (VP8NO) for pointing out a typo in my two

[Elecraft] [K3] 700 Hz 8-Pole INRAD Filter 2014 Production Schedule (Order Now)

2014-05-27 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
We are currently accepting orders for the next production run, which
will be commissioned next Tuesday. Allowing 14 weeks for manufacturing,
transit, customs, and processing -- it should arrive in early September.

We will only be ordering about half the usual number of filters this
time because we want to have another procurement cycle before the winter
solstice holiday shopping season. Given its small size, this next batch
will probably sell out by July.

Our aim is for the subsequent lot to arrive the second or third week of
November, and (hopefully) not sell out before the end of the year.

SPECIFICATIONS

  Overview
o Center Frequency : 8125 kHz
o Nominal Bandwidth : 700 Hz
o 6/60 Shape Factor : 1.7

Have a look at http://www.unpcbs.com/#rework_eliminator_TM_products

Option Bypass Headers and Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Internal Mic Adaptor.
The mic adaptor more-than-dramatically simplifies the task of reconfiguring
the K2 to support any of more than 65 popular amateur radio microphones.

In addition to rewiring the front panel mic connector, it also inserts
an external bias resistor when necessary. And best of all, both tasks can
be accomplished by removing your K2's left side panel and rearranging a
half-dozen jumpers!

Proper ESD precautions dictate that plastic or foam shouldn't be anywhere

least a foot away although I would suggest at least three, but preferable
six feet away so that it's not within arm's reach.

Therefore, DO NOT USE a plastic or a foam egg carton to sort/organize
hardware! Only use a recycled paper egg cartoon, although I prefer a mini
muffin tin for this purpose. In hindsight, a recycled paper egg carton
might be better from an ESD perspective, although a paper carton might
contain acids that can lead to corrosion over time. (Probably not a concern
for someone who completes their K3 within 24 hours, but I had to set mine
aside for a couple of months mid-build due to health reasons.)

Hi Rick,

Owners of pre-SN 4060 K2s can obtain the firmware upgrade for free (a
$50 savings) by purchasing the K60XV option and indicating that you need the
latest firmware. You would then need to either drill the necessary (BNC
connector) mounting holes in your K2's rear I/O panel heatsink, or purchase
a replacement panel from Elecraft, for $20. (The K60XV kit even includes a
pair of replacement K2 PA thermal pads.)

If you get the KSB2 option, you might want to consider getting the
Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Internal Mic Adaptor kit, which
more-than-dramatically simplifies the task of reconfiguring the front panel
mic connector, to support any of about 65 8-pin Foster amateur radio
microphones.

In addition, you might also consider getting the Rework Eliminator(TM)
K2 Option Bypass Headers kit, which will enable you to use your K2 without
the KSB2 or K60XV options installed (after you've modified it to accept
these options).

Feel free to email me off list if you have questions. Or visit
http://www.unpcbs.com/#rework_eliminator_TM_products for full details.

P.S. Both K2 Rework Eliminator(TM) kits are approaching end-of-life: the
internal mic adaptor possibly before year's end; the option bypass headers
probably within a year.

Does Elecraft test the incoming INRAD crystals?

Elecraft designed and produced a small gadget and provided it to INRAD at no

connect it to a network analyzer. With this setup, INRAD is able to test
their K3 filters in-house, to ensure they meet Elecraft's specifications,
(which I suspect includes a maximum center-frequency offset for each
bandwidth). Elecraft's post-production processing of 8-pole INRAD filters
is likely limited to applying their label and adding the necessary mounting
hardware. Note that INRAD includes the necessary mounting hardware with
filters that they retail, but not with their K3 filters that they sell in
bulk to Elecraft and to unpcbs.com.

P.S. INRAD offers two bandwidths (1.5 kHz and 500 Hz) which are not

which is not available from INRAD.

In addition to being a good quality mat, it also needs to be kept clean,
which mainly means being free of the naturally occurring oils in your skin.
In a pinch this can be done with mild soap and water, but ideally one should
use a solution that's specifically formulated to both clean the mat and
restore its surface conductivity.

I recommend Techspray Zero Charge Mat Table Top Cleaner be used at least
every three weeks, more frequently if the mat's surface reflectivity seems
uneven, which is a sure sign of contamination. FYI, the reason for using
this product at least every three weeks is that the surface naturally tends

Those products look like the real deal. However, only one of the four
symptoms of ESD damage is catastrophic failure. The other three being:
1) Shorten product life.
2) Degraded performance.
3) Occasional glitchy / unexplained behavior.

My point being that just because your K3 works today, isn't necessarily
sufficient evidence that all is well. However, in your case I do believe
that all is indeed well. (I've listed these other ESD symptoms for the guys
who post on the Reflector about how they never take any ESD precautions, and
never have any problems.)

We have shipped more than 100 of these custom INRAD filters since 2011
with an overall customer satisfaction record of 96.5%. What's more, since
April 2012, 100% of our customers have reported being pleased with 700 Hz.

In the interest of full disclosure, FYI these statistics don't include
customers who purchased a 700 Hz filter but never used it. We've had four
such customers to date ...

1. Chris P. : who was reluctant to open his factory-built K3, with sub-RX.
2. Mike R. : who reluctantly sold his K3, soon after ordering his filter.
3. Joel C. : an SSB-only op, who ordered one on a whim for digital modes.
4. John Z. : who ultimately purchased a Ten-Tec Omni VI, instead of a K3.

SPECIFICATIONS

  Overview
o Center Frequency : 8125 kHz
o Nominal Bandwidth : 700 Hz
o 6/60 Shape Factor : 1.7
o Insertion Loss: 6 dB (note 1)

  Typical Passband Response (note 1)
o 0.680 kHz @ -3 dB
o 0.785 kHz @ -6 dB (note 2)
o 1.030 kHz @ -30 dB
o 1.340 kHz @ -60 dB

  Center Frequency Deviation
o +/- 100 Hz worst-case, across all manufacturing lots (note 3)
o +/- 5 Hz typical, within any given manufacturing lot (note 4)

  Notes:
(1) Data extrapolated from the plot of a randomly selected filter.
(2) According to INRAD, the -6 dB bandwidth can vary by +/- 15 Hz.
(3) To date, the standard deviation of all batch-offsets is 45 Hz.
(4) In contrast, Elecraft considers within 40 Hz a matched pair.

Visit http://www.unpcbs.com to order and for:  pricing; availability;
delivery status; terms of sale; shipping charges; passband response plot;
user comments; FAQs; app notes; a slideshow presentation illustrating and
comparing INRAD's CW bandwidth choices; and a marketing brochure that has
information not found elsewhere on our website.

73,
Gary (Kilo India Four Golf Golf X-ray)

P.S. In the unlikely event that you aren't delighted with 700 Hz; FYI on
average, these special-order filters retain 95% of their original selling
price on the second-hand market.

[Elecraft] [OT] Be Advised ... New Microsoft Outlook Email Spam-Filter False-Positives Bug!

2014-03-24 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Late last night I posted ...
... I sent it to myself on a whim, only to find that it was misidentified
as spam. Eventually I was able to determine that the culprit was my
callsign on the signature line!

--- - - - ---

Concerned that my initial bug report would only be processes automatically
-- such that no one would see that I essentially included the code fix in my
report -- I just spent 70 minutes on the phone with Microsoft.

It took that long because I had to speak with five people before reaching
someone (named Reden) who was able to comprehend what I was saying. He said
he would send my regular expression code to the Outlook spam-filter software
developers, adding that he did not yet know how to do that!

73,
Gary
[Callsign omitted to avoid Microsoft Outlook spam filter false-positives.]

P.S. Having since learned that this issue was reported a week ago, it's
likely Microsoft has already written their own solution.

[Elecraft] [OT] Be Advised ... New Microsoft Outlook Email Spam-Filter False-Positives Bug!

2014-03-23 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
This past week I emailed someone (Bob in Germany) but he didn't reply so a
few days later I emailed him again. Upon replying to my second email, Bob
indicated that he never received my first email!

Fast-forward to this evening, while tweaking my next (700 Hz filter)
Reflector post, I sent it to myself on a whim, only to find that it was
misidentified as spam. Eventually I was able to determine that the culprit
was my callsign on the signature line!

I've already reported this issue to Microsoft, and as luck would have it, I
had previously written the necessary regular expression code (see below)
to identify any valid amateur radio callsign, so I provided that as well.
Even though my code should save them many hours of research, coding, and
testing; there's still no telling when or even if this recently introduced
bug will be corrected!

I mention this because it's unlikely mine is the only amateur radio callsign
being misidentified by Microsoft Outlook's spam filter!

[Elecraft] [OT] QST QST QST -- END OF THREAD

2014-03-19 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Regarding the uncharacteristically mean-spirited comments on the heels
of my last post ... I never imagined my words would be twisted to imply
meanings I never intended. In particular, I never discredited INRAD's 400
Hz filter. On the contrary, I pointed out that in the absence of a
panadapter, many operators find prolonged SP with a 400 Hz passband
fatiguing; even inefficient if you end up missing weak stations in the
process.

--- - - - ---

But stepping back for a moment ... what does it say about this
Reflector, that I feel so compelled to address such underhanded comments
(here) in clear violation of the list guidelines?

Sadly, Eric has allowed a few thugs to hijack his once-legendary
Elecraft Reflector. No wonder so many Elecraft customers have already
abandoned this forum.

[Elecraft] [K3] Perfect for Field Day SP ... Limited Production 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters

2014-02-28 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Unless you have a panadapter, you'll never work weak stations, if you can't
hear them because they're outside your passband! (This is the beauty of 700
Hz!) In fact, many seasoned Elecraft K3 owners feel that using the radio's
400 Hz default (NORM) CW passband setting, is kind of like viewing the
world thru a drinking straw while riding a bicycle. That is, it would be
fairly easy to skip right past a weak calling station, without ever
realizing it was there.

But even more importantly, prolonged scanning with a 400 Hz passband can be
tedious and fatiguing. This is why, band conditions permitting, savvy
operators prefer a 700 Hz passband:

o for general CW tuning -- W3FPR
o for scanning the band (or a pileup). -- K8GU
o for combing through the pileups with VFO [B] -- NI0C
o to cruise the CW bands from a wider perspective -- N1LQ

--- - - - ---

The next batch is due to arrive May 16th. Demand for these custom filters
can fluctuate dramatically, so it's impossible to say precisely when this
next manufacturing lot might sell out. (Our best guess is: April 1st,
give or take a few weeks.) A subsequent production run can be expected
about 15 weeks thereafter.

If you have a sub-receiver or you are considering getting one, then FYI the
center frequency offset of individual manufacturing lots, can vary by up to
plus or minus 100 Hz. In contrast, the variation across any given lot is
typically only plus or minus 5 Hz; yielding superbly matched pairs for
diversity reception!

--- - - - ---

Visit http://www.unpcbs.com to place an order, and for full details
including:

o Retail price.
o The filter's passband response plot.
o User comments.
o Special terms of sale.
o Bandwidth and availability FAQs.
o App notes.
o An animated slideshow illustrating all five INRAD CW bandwidths.

[Elecraft] It's Time to Get in on the Next Batch of Custom Order 700 Hz Filters

2014-01-22 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
WB2ART and I are currently accepting formal/paid orders against the next
production run of 700 Hz 8-pole INRAD filters for the K3. The cutoff – to
guarantee that you get in on this next batch – is 1200 UTC on Tuesday January
28th, at which time we will commission INRAD to initiate production. Assuming
a 15 week lead-time, we expect to receive the filters on Friday May 16th, give
or take a week.

As always, we will order a few extra filters based on our best guess of how
many additional requests we might receive by the date the filters are expected
to arrive. But please note that demand for these filters can vary
significantly, so it's entirely possible the batch will completely sell out,
even before the end of February! Further, if you miss out on this upcoming
batch, it's most unlikely you'll be able to obtain a 700 Hz filter in time for
Field Day. That is, unless you can find someone who is willing to part with
theirs.

Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com to place your order and for full details
including: price; passband plot; user comments; FAQs; app notes; and a nifty
visual comparison (slideshow) of all five INRAD CW filters. I especially
suggest that you check out the (recently updated) What Others Have Said
section, at http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/#comments

P.S. Eric, please forgive me for this, my third 700 Hz (commercial) post in

[Elecraft] Never Say Never ... was The End is Here

2014-01-14 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
It seems there's still a demand for our custom order 700 Hz 8-pole K3
filters. In fact, we've already started a waiting list for the next batch,
and hope to commit to production -- possibly within a week, but if not, then
preferably no later than the end of January. That would see the filters
arriving sometime in May; so certainly in plenty of time for Field Day.

The only catch is that Ken prefers we have at least five preorders before
we move forward. So, if you want another production run happen, you can
help make it a reality by registering via our automated waiting-list webpage
at http://www.unpcbs.com/list/

Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ for full details, or email me off-list

[Elecraft] 700 Hz 8-Pole K3 Filters Last Time Buy?

2013-12-16 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Interest in our customer-order 700 Hz K3 filter (by INRAD) has fall off
dramatically since Field Day, leading Ken and I to wonder whether everyone
who wanted one has already gotten theirs. Thus, depending on future demand,
there might not be a last-time-buy opportunity to get one of these
limited-production filters.

However, even if there isn't another production run, we were able to procure
a few production overrun units from INRAD. These remaining filters are
available now while they last. Once they are gone we will start a waiting
list to determine whether or not there will even be a next production run.

Please visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ to submit your order as well as for full
details, including: price, shipping cost, delivery timetable, user
comments, FAQs, passband plot, app notes, etc. Also please feel free to
email us with your questions, comments, suggestions, etc.

[Elecraft] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole K3 Filter Availability

2013-11-20 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Batch #5 (which arrived about a month ago) is just about sold out. Sales of
these limited production filters have been fairly slow since mid-summer, but
we expect they'll pick up as the holidays approach.

Once this batch sells out there will be at least a 15-week lead-time (12
weeks manufacturing + 3 weeks transit and processing) until batch #6 can be
expected to arrive at your QTH. So we are probably looking at the
March-April timeframe, although the exact date will depend on how quickly
the current batch sells out.

The 700 Hz filters just arrived! Most are already sold but a handful are
still available for purchase. Demand tends to fluctuate widely, so we can't

[Elecraft] [K3] 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters by INRAD -- Get Them While They Last

2013-10-02 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
INRAD reports that batches four and five are now in US customs! These
special-order filters have been backordered since early July and most of
them have already been sold. However, a handful are still available for
purchase on a first-come-first-served basis.

It's impossible to say how quickly they'll sell out. They might be gone in
a matter of hours of this post, or they might not sell out until after we
receive them?

Steve,

If you are going to be experimenting, then I suggest the Rework
Eliminator(TM) K2 Internal Mic Adaptor (IMA). It supports jumper
configurable wiring of the pin-out as well as seven jumper selectable bias
resistances between 820 and 10k Ohms. All Alinco, Elecraft, Heil, Icom,
Kenwood, Ten-Tec, and Yaesu 8-pin Foster microphone pin-outs are supported.
And best of all, you don't have to disassemble the radio to change
configurations! All that's required is removal of the left side panel!

[Elecraft] [K3] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters -- A Possible Photo Finish

2013-09-12 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Ken and I are now accepting orders towards our fifth batch of 700 Hz INRAD
filters which is scheduled to ship in early November. Coincidentally we
are now projecting that this next batch will sell out about the same date
it ships. (A subsequent batch can be expected about 15 weeks after that
date, i.e. in the mid-February timeframe.)

If this batch doesn't sell out before it arrives, then any remaining
filters will almost surely disappear within a matter of hours of their

Vern,

Just to emphasize what Don means, you should NEVER REHEAT/REFLOW A SOLDER
JOINT WITHOUT ADDING SOME FRESH FLUX as this will result in a very poor
and very unreliable solder joint. And a flux pen is a better source than
using additional solder, because you don't want too much solder. Yes,
solder can be used as a source of fresh flux in a pinch -- in the absence
of a flux pen -- but you might first want to remove some of the existing
solder.

Elaborating a bit further, a blob of solder on the tip of your iron isn't a
solution, as the flux would have already burned off by that point. Instead,
Don is suggesting that the solder would need to be feed directly into the
joint once it's hot.

If you have to resort to reheating every joint on the Front Panel, then I
suggest a flux pen (or other similar flux dispenser) is a must!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Roofing filters

2013-08-06 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
On Tuesday August 6, Ivan (G3IZD) wrote ...

I am about to purchase a K3 ... what is the general feeling regarding
[filter] bandwidth(s) ...

--

Hi Ivan,

In addition to the choices available from Elecraft and INRAD, WB2ART
and I also offer a 700 Hz (wide CW) alternative. IMHO 700 Hz fits really
well between the INRAD 1.5 k Hz and 400 Hz filters and it's ideal for
scanning.

The lead-time for the 700 Hz filter is upwards of 14 weeks, as there's
a 12-manufacturing lead-time and we only commission production as demand
warrants. The current batch (due to arrive in early October) will probably
sell out within a matter of hours. The next batch can be expected sometime
between December and February.

--- - - - ---

Our website – http://www.unpcbs.com/ – features a unique visual
comparison of the five 8-pole filters (1,000, 700, 500, 400, and 250 Hz).
This comparison is packaged as both an online slideshow and as a
(printable) PDF file. Brief descriptions accompany each slide. As a
whole, these descriptions create a concise 8-pole CW filter buyer's guide

If you are a serious contester, then 700 and 400 Hz would be an
excellent choice. Otherwise (if you're not a serious contester) then the
700 is probably the only CW filter you'll ever need. Oh and it's also
ideal for 500 Hz digital formats.

--- - - - ---

Additional suggestions ...

1) Avoid filters whose widths are too similar. Specifically, IMHO a ratio
of less than 1.4 (i.e. the square root of two) is an exercise in
diminishing returns.

2) For historic reasons, the filter widths are not always the same as
their designations. This is especially true of the INRAD 250 Hz 8-pole
filter, which is closer 370 Hz wide.

3) INRAD offers two additional 8-pole filters – 1500 Hz and 500 Hz – which
are not available through Elecraft.

4) If you have the sub-RX, then adding/changing filters is a fairly
significant undertaking. (Thus the advice about just getting a bare K3 and
adding filters later may not apply to you, if your intention is to get a
factory assembled K3 with sub-RX.)

Cheers,
Gary KI4GGX

[Elecraft] [K3] Custom 700 Hz Filters + NEW 8-Pole CW Filter Buyer's Guide

2013-07-26 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
The current batch -- due to ship in early October -- will likely sell out
within two weeks. Looking ahead, the following batch will ship no sooner
than December, with the January-February timeframe being more realistic.

Our Focal Length Analogy slideshow provides a compelling case for 700 Hz.
Especially for anyone who doesn't have a panadapter and therefore must scan
the old fashioned way, i.e. by ear! The slideshow annotations provide a
concise CW filter buyer's guide which should prove especially useful to new
and prospective K3 owners. See ...

o http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/#brochure : printable

Price: $145. Visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ for full details and to order.

[Elecraft] [K2] Recent Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Mic Adaptor Documentation Revisions

2013-07-25 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Our K2 app note #9 entitled IMA: Six Jumpers Now Standard was published
within the past week, prompting updates to most IMA documents, including:

o The Quick Start Instruction Sheet (QSIS).
o The user's guide.
o The single-page summary sheet.
o The quick-reference self-adhesive decal.

The latest IMA documentation suggests revised locations for unused versus
spare jumpers which minimize the need to reposition spares when changing
configurations.

--- - - - ---

The user's guide was also updated about six weeks ago to correct an error
where the MH-27 was mistakenly listed under both the powered and un-powered
Yaesu configurations.

P.S. Please contact me if you have ever used a Ten-Tec mic with the IMA.

[Elecraft] [K2] Rework Eliminator(TM) Kit Availability

2013-07-10 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Based on sales history over the past 14 months, I estimate that we have
about a 13 month supply of Headers kit remaining, and about a 19 month
supply of Mic Adaptor kits. (Although it's possibly they could last twice
that long or sell out in half that time.)

As our inventory becomes critical, we may institute a two-kit per customer
purchase-limit.

It's too soon to say whether there will be a subsequent production run of
either kit. (That will depend on demand.)

[Elecraft] [K3] 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters - We Are Now Accepting Formal (Paid) Orders

2013-07-06 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Ken and I will be accepting formal (paid) orders towards the next
production run of 700 Hz filters through 1600 UTC on Wednesday July 10th.
At that time we will commission production of batch four, and begin a
waiting list towards batch five.

See http://www.unpcbs.com/frontdoor/

Since we have promised not commission another batch as long as anyone has
a filter they want to sell ... please contact me (off list) ASAP if you
have a 700 Hz filter surplus to your needs, and I will put you in contact
with the next person on our list.

--- - - - ---

If you are wondering what's so special about 700 Hz, then you might want
to check out our newest webpage, which features a slideshow that presents
a novel visual comparison of the five 8-pole CW filters. It uses an
analogy that likens bandwidth to the focal length of a camera lens, or
more specifically, to the resulting angular field of view for a given
focal length.

You may find that comparing the resulting images, is much more intuitive
than comparing a table of numbers (i.e. minus 6 dB bandwidths), or
comparing passband roll-off plots.

[Elecraft] [K3] Residual 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters New 700 Hz Filter Slideshow Page

2013-06-27 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
We expect to receive a few residual 700 Hz filters from INRAD in the
next week or two. We've already contacted everyone on our waiting list,
and we've also posted a message about the filters on our 700 Hz Filter
Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/700.Hz.K3.filter

HOWEVER! PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR WEBSITE STILL STATES THAT THE THIRD
PRODUCTION RUN HAS SOLD OUT! Most likely, these extra filters will sell
out before I can update our website, so for the moment, I'm just going to
wait and see what happens.

If you want to get one of these residual 700 Hz filters, versus probably
having to wait until 2014 for the next batch, then please register via our
preorder waiting list page at http://www.unpcbs.com/list/ -- BEING CERTAIN
to specify the quantity you wish to purchase.

Ken or I will contact you to let you know whether or not you made the
cut. If you did, we will request your paid order within 24 hours. If
you didn't (make the cut), then you'll have the option of cancelling your
preorder, or waiting until we have sufficient interest to commission the
next batch; which might take anywhere from two to eight weeks.

--- - - - ---

If you are not an extreme CW contester, then you might be interested in our
new 700 Hz slideshow page, (still under construction). If the saying a
picture is worth a thousand words is true, then this new page ought to be
worth five thousand! See http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/slideshow/

Since this page is still under construction, your feedback right now will
be extremely helpful. However, the page is still lacking any text, so it
may
make more sense after you've read the following passage ...

~~
Band conditions permitting, many CW operators prefer a 600 to 800 Hz
passband setting. They find the default (norm) 400 Hz width too
constricting for scanning the bands. Kind of like trying to view the
world through a drinking straw, while riding a bicycle!
~~

TNX 73,
Gary KI4GGX
(webmaster)

P.S. The scaling of the slideshow images is proportional to the measured
widths of all but the 500 Hz filter. The 500, is an average of the 1000,
700, and 400 Hz filter deltas, and probably to within plus or minus 3%.

[Elecraft] [K3] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole INRAD Filters for Field Day -- While They Last

2013-06-14 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
700 Hz is just about ideal for SP contesting, and there's still plenty of
time to get one (or two) of these filters in preparation for Field Day.

Visit http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/#comments to read what other users have
said about 700 Hz. Visit http://www.unpcbs.com/backdoor/ for ordering
instructions.

We've experienced a threefold increase in sales since Dayton, so it's
difficult to predict exactly when the current batch will sell out.
Presently our homepage states around the 2nd week of August, but later
today I plan to replace that statement with around the end of July.
After this batch sells out, you'll likely have to wait until 2014 for
another chance to get one.

Even if you don't use our products, you still should find our K2 Toroid
Winding App Note useful if you choose to wind the toroids yourself. See
http://www.unpcbs.com/notes/#note-6

Now then, regarding your question ... there's no doubt you can build the
K2 without our products or our Rework-Free Option Ready assembly method,
either by exactly following the K2 manual, or as someone suggested, by
stuffing components and jumper wires directly into the K2's gold-plated
mating sockets, (provided you've purchased and installed them).

It's just that our Headers support all of the options. And perhaps more
importantly, you won't run the risk of dissimilar metal corrosion on the
internal socket contacts, or the risk of installing these parts in the wrong
place.

Also, note that if you follow the K2 manual exactly, you'll need to
perform PCB rework to install the mating sockets for three of the options:
KSB2; KAF2/KDSP2; and K60XV. (In total, five mating sockets are affected.)

BTW, in addition to our Option Bypass Header kit and our Duplicate K2
PCB Parts kits, we also offer a second Rework Eliminator(TM) accessory; an
Internal Mic Adaptor kit. It takes full advantage of the K2's Mic
Configuration Header, enabling you to reconfigure the mic jack for any of 66
popular microphones in about two minutes.

These custom filters are excellent for Field Day ops who like to SP with

Our inventory of 700 Hz filters is dwindling and it won't be long before the
2013 batch has sold out. We don't yet know if there will be a subsequent
batch, but even if there is, it most likely wouldn't happen until 2014.

method, these two kits dramatically simplify the tasks of upgrading and
reconfiguring the K2. See http://www.unpcbs.com/#side-by-side_comparisons

[Elecraft] [K3] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole Filters

2013-02-10 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
The next batch of 700 Hz filters is due to arrive this week! Ken and
I are pleased to announce that -- for the first time -- these filters
will be available from stock while supplies last. Depending on
demand, they'll probably sell out sometime between Dayton and Field
Day.

We cannot yet say whether or not there will be a subsequent batch.
Although even if there is, it most likely wouldn't arrive until 2014.

Due to their limited production volume, these custom filters retail
for $145 plus our default SH charge. (The $5 surcharge -- over
Elecraft's 8-pole filter price -- covers the cost of shipping the
batch from INRAD and the cost to insure your individual order.)

Our K2 Headers kits have been selling twice as fast as we expected

been completed, and DRAMATICALLY SIMPLIFY the task of rewiring the K2's mic
jack to support anyone of 66 microphones.

[Elecraft] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole K3 Filters (by INRAD)

2012-11-01 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
We are nearing the halfway mark towards our production commitment goal
of 20 preorders. Although we are now confident that that a next batch
will happen, we cannot yet say when production will commence. Our
best guess is that it will occur around the third week of January.

Note that there's a 14-week manufacturing lead-time for these custom
filters. With luck the next batch will arrive at your door before
Dayton. But if not, then almost certainly in time for Field Day.

The filters retail for $145 each + SH, with SH being as follows ...
o Domestic = $6
o Canada Mexico = $14
o All other international destinations (one or two filters) = $18
o All other international destinations (more than two filters) = $34

Please visit ...

http://www.unpcbs.com/list/ -- for the very latest preorder count, and
to add your name to our waiting list.

http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/ -- for additional details, including:
a technical datasheet; the latest news; user comments; terms of sale;
FAQs; and app notes.

If you already preordered, WE THANK YOU for your patience and for your
part making a next batch a reality.

P.S. At last check, Central Long Island was still without power. So
(for the moment) Ken remains unable to process orders for our K2
Rework Eliminator(TM) accessory kits.

2012-10-01 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak

Ethan, K8GU just wrote off Reflector ... Did I miss mention of cost?

Sorry about that guys! The price ($145 each + SH) is posted at
http://www.unpcbs.com/frontdoor/ but that webpage is (and will remain)
fairly well hidden until we are actually accepting formal/paid orders.

Additionally, our SH charges are as follows ...
o Domestic = $6
o Canada Mexico = $14
o All other international destinations (one or two filters) = $18
o All other international destinations (more than two filters) = $34

Lastly, we now have four preorders!

[Elecraft] [K2] Revised Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Internal Mic Adaptor User's Guide

2012-07-25 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Version 6 of the IMA user's guide is now online. Beyond incorporating
app note #8, this latest version has been extensively revised to
improve readability.

If you are an IMA owner, please take a look and let us know if you are
using one of the microphones that are still shown as unverified. If
you've never heard of the IMA, but either own an SSB K2, or are
considering getting one, you might find the guide a worthwhile read
as well.

[Elecraft] Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Accessories Parts Kits + 700 Hz K3 Filters

2012-07-01 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
After a lapse of more than two years, all of our Rework Eliminator(TM)
K2 accessories and K2 Duplicate PCB Parts kits are back in stock.

--- - - - ---

The remaining 700 Hz K3 filters from the second production run are now
up for sale. (We were holding on to a few temporarily until all
existing orders were delivered.)

--- - - - ---

A major revision of the IMA user's guide is in the works and due out
by the end of July. Please let us know if you are successfully using
any of the mics that still show a beta test status in the current
version. In particular, we are not aware of anyone using a Ten-Tec
microphone with the IMA.

[Elecraft] [K2] [K3] 700 Hz Filter + K2 Mic Adaptor Decal + Companion Guide III

2012-06-11 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
There's a lot new at unpcbs.com. Here are some highlights ...

We published the 700 Hz K3 filter plot. The -6 dB width is 770 Hz and
(by eye) the shape factor looks to be about 1.9.
   http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/#plot

The 700 Hz filters are due to arrive this week! It's not too late
to claim the ones we are temporarily retaining for shrinkage.
   http://www.unpcbs.com/list/

There's a completely revised K2 Internal Mic Adaptor quick-reference
decal, with almost everything you need from the user's guide.
   http://www.unpcbs.com/adaptor/#news

Companion Guide III is out! Use it with Elecraft's 2010 (rev H) and
2012 (rev I) manuals to build a rework-free Option Ready K2.

[Elecraft] [K2][K3] The Latest News About Aftermarket Accessories from unpcbs.com

2012-05-28 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
[K3]

The 700 Hz 8-pole K3 Filters are due to ship next week. Fewer than a
handful from this batch remain unclaimed! Also, we will soon be
making a label available for the filters from the first batch. See
http://www.unpcbs.com/filter/filter_images/lot_5210_label_thumb.png

[K2] ...

Over the past three months we extensively revised our website to make
it more beginner friendly. If someone you know is curious about
building a K2, our website is an excellent place for them to begin the
journey.

K2 Option Bypass Headers kit
After having been unavailable since May 2010, our recent sale has
enabled us to produce what we hope will be enough additional kits to
last forever. (Not that they actually will.)

Option-Ready / Duplicate K2 PCB parts kits
Several of these kits were unavailable while the K2 Headers kit was
out of production. However, they will all be available once again
within a few weeks. Assuming the seller (of a KAF2/KDSP2) includes
the original threaded hex standoff, these kits will have everything
you need to install any second-hand option in your stock K2.
Although their primary purpose is to build an Option Ready K2.

App Notes
Three new app notes were published in the past six weeks, including:
o IMA: Spare Jumper Storage Locations -- released May 11th
o K2: Toroid Winding Guide -- released April 20th

Companion Guides
Versions III and IV describing our rework-free Option Ready K2
assembly method, are due to be released in June. These versions
correspond to the rev H and I K2 manuals.

2012-05-15 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak

I finally got around to installing my 700 Hz CW roofing filter

Just to clarify, Chuck is referring to a 700 Hz filter from the 2010 batch,
rather than
the current batch which is due to arrive in a couple of weeks. There are
still 2 filters
available for immediate purchase from this batch, plus a few extras that we
will be
retaining temporarily for shrinkage.

After that, a next batch wouldn't arrive until mid- to late-September, and
that's
provided there's sufficient demand for another production run.

[Elecraft] FW: RE: Decisions, Decisions buy a K2 or wait for a KX3??

2012-04-29 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
On Sun Apr 29 at 0943 EDT Joe McGerald AF6NI wrote (on the Elecraft
K3 Reflector) ...

... I am looking forward to the building process, so that speaks for
the K2. ... What are your thoughts?

--

Joe,

Only you can answer this question. I can offer a few thoughts for
you to consider, but before I do ... if you were to build a K2, then
I suggest that you purchase a Rework Eliminator(TM) K2 Option Bypass
Headers kit, and perhaps also a Rework Eliminator(TM) Internal Mic
Adaptor. See http://www.unpcbs.com/ for details.

--- - - - ---

Now then, some factors to consider in your decision making
process might be ...

1) Do you prefer the latest technology which will continue to develop
for years to come via firmware upgrades? Or the nostalgia of
through-hole construction?

2) A pro for the K2 is the building experience plus the fact that
you can repair and upgrade it yourself. (BTW, this is where the
Rework Eliminator(TM) Headers are worth their weight in gold!)

3) Pros for the KX3 are no doubt functionality, features,
portability, and probably also value, including resale value. (I'm
guessing the two radios are probably about even with regard to RX
power consumption.)

4) As far the value of the K2 is concerned, the bare kit is still a
bargain; whereas a fully loaded K2 is difficult to justify. UNLESS
the building experience is one of your most important criteria!

5) One last thing to consider is that the KX3 will certainly be
around for many years to come, whereas your opportunity to purchase
a K2 is probably measured in months at this point.

73,
Gary KI4GGX K2 #4067
unpcbs.com webmaster

P.S. From the looks of your shack (on qrz.com) it would appear that
you don't need another radio. That fact ought to also figure into
your decision process.

K2 builders who are winding the toroids should find this latest K2-

[Elecraft] [K2] Another Rework Eliminator(TM) Option Bypass Header Production Run

2012-04-15 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
After a promising initial flurry, K2 Option Bypass Headers kit
preorders have subsided leaving us well below our 100-kit goal.
At this point it's looking like either: A) there won't be another
production run; or B) if there is, the pricing will be more like
$24 postproduction and $12 preproduction sale.

If you are waiting to purchase a Headers kit -- expecting that
we will receive sufficient preorders without yours -- please do
preorder. Otherwise, there's a very good chance you'll never
have an opportunity to place an order! And even if you do, you
might not be extended the same 1/2 price offer as those who did.

[Elecraft] [K2] Another Rework Eliminator(TM) Option Bypass Header Production Run

2012-04-09 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Ken and I have been wondering whether there's sufficient interest to
warrant another Headers PCB production run. We would like to offer
our K2 Headers kit again, but the steep manufacturing setup charge
necessitates a minimum order quantity of at least 75 pieces.

To generate interest, we are going to offer a 1/2 price preproduction
sale. We are targeting a retail price of $21.00, so the preproduction
price would be $10.50.

We are currently accepting preorders to gauge the level of demand.
If you are interested in purchasing one of our K2 Headers kits, please
visit our website, http://www.unpcbs.com/ for details on how to submit
your preorder online; as opposed to emailing us directly. (The number
of preorders we need is more than we're prepared to manage via email.)

[Elecraft] [K3] Interest in Custom 700 Hz 8-pole INRAD Filters?

2012-02-08 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak
Given the lack of response to N8CEP's recent WTB Reflector message, we are
curious if there's sufficient interest to warrant another production run.
FYI, although 700 Hz was originally requested by CW ops who felt that 1000
Hz was too wide and 500 Hz too narrow, digital mode enthusiasts have since
discovered that 700 Hz is also ideal for some of the newer 500 Hz modes.

Assuming a manufacturing lead-time of 13 weeks, the next batch should
arrive in plenty of time for Field Day. Provided that is, that we can
spread the word fast enough to reach our minimum order target of 20 pieces
by the end of February. (Presently we're at 2, so we need 18 more.)

Please email us at support@unpcbs.com to get in on this next batch.
(We call that placing a pre-order.) Or, visit http://www.unpcbs.com/ to

Re: [Elecraft] What Exactly do You Receive (was When you order)

2008-03-06 Thread Gary W. Hvizdak

At 23:08 EST on 6 Mar 2008, RC Conley (KC6WA) wrote ...

... what exactly do you receive when you order a basic K3/10 ...?

--

Hi RC,

You are actually asking two questions:

1) What hardware do you get?
2) What functionality does the firmware provide?

A good place to find a high-level answer to the hardware question is
to visit Elecraft's ordering webpage ...

http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm#k3

... and simply observe what optional modules are available. Very briefly,
the hardware that doesn't come with the base K3 includes:

o ATU module
o Sub-Receiver (which includes a second identical RX plus a second DSP)
o 100 W PA module
o Ten optional roofing filters (the base K3 includes a 5-pole 2.7 kHz
filter; both the main and sub-RX can each hold five roofing filters)
o General Coverage BPF module (both the main RX and the sub RX can accept
one)
o Transverter Interface With RX Antenna I/O module
o An optional five times higher accuracy TXCO
o Digital Voice Recorder (will eventually have firmware support for vision
impaired operators)

Another excellent way to appreciate what hardware you get is to read the
K3 assembly manual. See ...

http://elecraft.com/manual/K3%20Assembly%20Manual%20Rev%20D%20Web.pdf

--- - - - ---

The answer to the functionality question is a moving target since
Wayne continues to add features to the firmware. As I don't yet have my K3,
I'm not in a position to provide details on this subject.

BTW, an excellent resource describing the current firmware functionality
is the product review that will appear in the April issue of QST. You can
see it now on Elecraft's website at ...

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3%20QST%20prod%20rev%201.pdf

A second resource is the K2 operators manual. See ...

http://elecraft.com/manual/K3%20Owners%20Manual%20C1%20sm.pdf
