Re: [Elecraft] New K1 Kit

2019-06-07 Thread Glen Torr
Petr,

If their are lots of us interested we could do a replica. I do PCBs and PIC
programming for a radio telescope (part time, I am an old fart).

Is this doable?

Re: [Elecraft] coaxial-cable patent# 1407 on 6apr1880.

2019-01-20 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Jerome,

Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention. One of my most precious
books is the biography of Oliver Heaviside by Paul J. Nahin. (Oliver
Heaviside: The Life, Work and Times of an Electrical Genius of the
Victorian Age).

He was a genius indeed. We have a Professor of Physics here in Australia
called David Jamison, University of Melbourne. He is a follower of Oliver.
I attended a lecture by him some years ago. Very inspiring, Oliver went
within a whisker of defining Relativity. Like Oliver I am a ferm believer
in the ether, just that these days we call it dark matter and dark energy.

Certainly one of my heroes.

Cheers,

Glen, VK1FB

Re: [Elecraft] Ham radio as a side dish

2018-05-27 Thread Glen Torr
Hi All,

Fascinating thread Wayne.

Most of my time now is devoted to design of electronics for a radio
telescope near Canberra in Australia.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molonglo_Observatory_Synthesis_Telescope

Love my KX line though still a nervous nellie about CW.

Most of my life now is doing hardware and code for the PIC18F67K40 to
control beam formers for a telescope upgrade.

Cheers All,

Glen VK1FB (My call is a tribute to my mentor Doug DeMaw who I met in
Connecticut in the late 70s).

[Elecraft] The times they are a changin.

2017-09-01 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Ho All,

Absolutely no disrespect here, I am an extremely loyal and prolific
Elecraft user/builder.

The KX1 and K1 are gone and the KPA 1500 is ascending.

I have ordered a QRP Labs QCX, a very innovative and kit oriented radio.

The mantle at the lower end has moved on.

Hi All,

I would second Ryan's suggestion, possibly a 2 meter (perhaps from the KX3)
and a similar 70 cm. transverter in a low height box that sits on top of
the KX2 as per the XV transverters with the K2.

Re: [Elecraft] 2013 KX3

Hi Bob,

I got KX3 s/n 2000 as a kit. After reviewing the KX3 mod page I have just
ordered the ball bearing optical encoder to replace the supplied magnetic
with sleeve bearing encoder. I also ordered the heavier duty heat sink.
Both are standard on current KX3s.

Enjoy your KX3, it is now my top end rig and the K3 has found a new home.

2016-09-10 Thread Glen Torr
Hi All,

KX2 is my all time favourite rig so what is the dream?

KX2 V/U, a 28 - 32 KX2, 1 mW out into a 6, 2 and .7 transverter set. 3 SMA
antenna sockets.
2 Lower transverters exist for the KX3 (Assuming the 70 mHz is convertible
to 50 MHz). Only a 70 cm 3 watt transverter needs to be developed. No
antenna tuner needed.

Imagine it on the mountains! (With the KX2 of course, common accessories).

Yours in dreaming,

Glen VK1FB

[Elecraft] [KX3][XPA100] KX3 drops out of PA MODE ON

2016-01-20 Thread Glen Torr
Hi list participants,
I have a KX3 and a KXPA100 that till now have worked fine. Last night I
turned on the combo and set "PA MODE" to ON. The amp came on, it displayed
in sequence the ON, ANT1, MAN which went out to be replaced by AUTO.
About 7 seconds later the KX3 returned to "PA MODE OFF" and the amplifier
turned off.
The KX3 reset its output power to 5 W.
I have downloaded latest beta firmware for both but the problem remains.
There is an uncharged set of eneloop AA NiMh in the KX3.
I feel I have made a dumb mistake somewhere!
Any ideas?
I have searched to no avail.

Re: [Elecraft] Icom IC-7300

2015-09-03 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Wayne,
Thank you for the thoughtful comments on the IC7300.
I am spending some of my retirement in radio astronomy where direct RF
sampling is invading. Radio astronomy is very different from most
communications in that the wider the bandwidth the better.
The only threat to my K3 is the KX3 and amplifier, we spend a lot of time
in the bush with our camper trailer and KX3 plus KXPA 100.
Thanks so much, I am rusted on to Elecraft.

I notice this shift, about 100 hz, also after a longer warm up periode.
Even when I put one or two fingers above the vfo dial.
Any hints to reduce this little frequency shift?

[Elecraft] [KX3] Repeat extended VFO temp. comp. proc.

Hi all,

Did the extended comp this morning but in the final steps I got muddled and
may have changed the ref cal. setting at the end while trying to do the
optional 3rd last step.

1) Should I repeat the whole extended temp procedure?

2) Do I need to do any reset or can I just repeat the entire procedure?

3) For the last step, REFCAL at room temp. can I use the XG50 as a signal
source?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX2]

Hi Wayne and all,

Thanks for the explanation which makes a lot of sense.

I wonder if the KX2 could be a CW no solder SOTA rig in a KX1 form factor.

Here in VK SSB is much more popular than CW for SOTA and this is a subject
of discussion on the VK SOTA group.

I am determined to do CW and would love an Elecraft SOTA rig.

That said thanks a bunch for the KX3, I can scarcely believe the technology
in this amazing radio.

Thanks for the pleasure you have given me.

[Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator

Hi All,

I have a KX3 and am doing some SOTA activations.

I have obtained a 4S LiPo battery which is somewhere north of 16 V with

I would like to get a DC-DC regulator as a more elegany solution than
series diodes.

I have searched and searched but no solid outcomes.

Anyone have any input on where to find such a regulator?

[Elecraft] KX3 sn 2000 arrives.

2012-10-02 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Ho All,

KX3 kit s.n. 2000 arrived in VK1 yesterday and has been assembled,
great assembly. Looks just excellent next to the Begali Sculpture
Mono.

This is the rig I have dreamed about since being hooked on QRP by Doug
DeMaw's QRP Barbados Style, must be 40 years ago.

My wife and I tour Australia's deserts and I hope to be on the air
from camp sites across the Nullabor plains in a few weeks. Next year
we hope to do the Gunbarrel Highway and Simson Desert and the KX3 will
be along.

Profound thanks to all Elecraft staff including those we dont get to
know publicly.

[Elecraft] K1 is a bunch of FUN

2011-03-23 Thread Glen Torr
Hello All,

Just finished K1 2950 and what a big pleasure it was to build.

My Elecraft career started with a KX1 which I love. A K2 was built
while my wife was away and a K3 followed as did a P3 and many
accessories.

I suppose I wanted to complete my set of Elecraft radios but building
this unique Elecraft radio was just so much fun. I now have the
spiritual senior member of the NC40 and Sierra family.

Just got a plain 80/40 and the auto antenna tuner, terrific.

Thanks Elecraft,

[Elecraft] [P3] Congratulations Elecraft on P3

2010-08-20 Thread Glen Torr
Dear Elecraft and List,

I got home from a trip yesterday to find the P3 had arrived. A
pleasant and quick build and an afternoon of playing and I am wrapped.

I love the Elecraft approach for top end radios of allowing no solder
kits, it connects me with the technology and architecture in a way
that I could not achieve with a pre built radio.

I have never used (or even seen) a panadaptor before but it provides
so much info on the band, just great.

So a big thanks to everyone at Elecraft from designer to the very
skilled people who pack the sub-assemblies.

Kind Regards,

[Elecraft] K3 1 mW calibration problem

2010-04-25 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Elecrafters,

(I sent this 3 days ago and it has not appeared, sri if this is a dup).

I recently installed the K144XV and was only getting 6 Watts out, I
had performed the 1 mW calibration.

To measure the power out of the KXV3A I attached an Elecraft 20 W
dummy load and TDS220 scope.

The power out measured 480 uW (440 mV p-p). To measure the power out I
used the MilliWatt Meter Calibration described on P49 of my manual,
rev. D2. I set CONFIG:KXV3 to TEST and held tune.

The menu entry name did not change to CONFIG:WMTR MW (am I missing
something here)?

I re-did the 1 mW calibration watching the scope and p-p output
voltages were typically 580 to 590 mV p-p (should be 634 mV p-p I
reckon).

Re did 5 W,  50W and 1 mW cal then getting 820 mV (2.1 mW) p-p using
CONFIG:KXV3 set to TEST.

In summary 2 problems:-
1) CONFIG:KXV3 to TEST and CONFIG:WMTR MW are not working for me.
2) The  1 mW calibrate in K3 utility 1.3.4.3 seems to deliver results
which vary from cal to cal.

Any insight appreciated.

complete kit of stainless for the K3.

Did a couple other mods to bring number 2603 up to the latest and
 greatest.

Likewise here for 2680, I am not in a salt enviroment, just like
stainless steel.

I greatly appreciate being able to upgrade my K3. I am more convinced
than ever this is a huge advantage. Nice being able to keep hardware
up to date as well as firmware.

Cheers,

[Elecraft] K3DSPUPGD price... a bargain, I reckon !

2009-12-24 Thread Glen Torr
Hi All,

I installed the new board in VK last weekend, not so much because I
wanted the audio BW but because I love keeping the big K3 current, but
it sounds great, I am so glad I did.

Compared to other rigs it is marvelous to be able to keep it current
and I am talking VK pricing for return postage.

Happy season to all and especially Thanks Elecraft,

Cheers,

[Elecraft] [K3] Macro control of AH-4 remote tuner (and other projects).

2009-10-29 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Wayne and all,

Thanks for the invite to ask Q's about macros.

I want a remote tuner for the K3 and have purchased an Icom AH-4.  I
built a simple controller but have been thinking I would program a PIC
to automate the process but maybe macros will provide a better
solution. What I need to do is:-

1) obtain and store current power
2) obtain and store current mode
3) set power to 10 W
4) set mode to CW
5) key TX
6) wait for tune successful (dig I/O on acc. skt).
7) restore power to stored value.
8) restore mode to stored value.

I was looking at the programmers reference to see if this was doable
in a PIC but if I can do it in the K3 terrific.

Secondly, when the KX1 was released an article by Wayne appeared in
the ARS Sojourner where Wayne said that at the expense of current
projects the KX1 was developed, was the current project the K3?

Thanks all,

[Elecraft] Elecraft machined knobs

2009-07-31 Thread Glen Torr
Hi Wayne and all,

Put me down for a set, not everyones cup of tea but I would love to
dignify my K3 in such a way.

It sure is the radio of my (30 year) amateur career.

[Elecraft] Possible doublet configuration

2009-07-15 Thread Glen Torr
Hello All,

Following this thread with much interest. I need a stealth antena and
a doublet may do the job.
Could I feed my K3/100 with ATU into a BL2 right at the antenna
connector, the output of the BL2
to home made ladder line, (2 to 4 inch spacing) to a doublet approx
1/2 wavelength on the lowest
freq?

Is it OK to bring ladder line into the shack?

The 1:1 or 4:1 of the BL2 might provide matching options in difficult cases.

Thanks for any thoughts,

[Elecraft] K2 is simply the best

2007-04-16 Thread Glen Torr
Hello All,

K2 5118 made contact #1 last Friday, random wire tuned by T1, also its first
use.

Has a 30 minute QSO with Rod, VK4LS on 40 with 10 W SSB, over 1200 km, solid
all the way and nice report.

After 30 years and many rigs, some home designed and brewed this was just
great. The K2 has something very special.
Cheers

[Elecraft] KX2 ?, (Long. OT)

2006-05-31 Thread Glen Torr
Howdy All,

As I left work last Friday it was with heavy heart as I had just read on the
ABC web site that Lincoln Hall, one of our great adventurer / mountaineer /
writers had passed away while descending from the summit of Mt. Everest

I awoke to the miraculous news on Saturday morning that reports of
Lincolns passing were incorrect, his expedition had radioed that he had
passed away and left him but an American climber had found him alive the
next morning (reports are sketchy) however he is alive and nearing or at
base camp and things are looking optimistic.

I have been interested in Antarctic exploration (and amateur radio) all my
life and have heard Lincoln talk. I got out some of his books from my
library and was staggered to see some of the connections with amateur radio
in a book called The Loneliest Mountain co written by Lincoln with
Jonathan Chester and an account of an expedition to climb Mt. Minto in
Antarctica.

In Lincoln's book on the Mt. Minto expedition I came across the following
end note on Field Communications. The second field radio was a very
compact 1 - watt HF Codan 8332 hand held transceiver that had both a whip
and dipole antennae. and later The radio was, however, instrumental in
saving Chris Hilton's life and mine.

I love my KX1 most of my radios, the K2 is nearing completion but the KX1 is
the favourite. I was thinking, in view of some suggestions for new Elecraft
Kits of a KX2, a 5 watt ssb 5 and 18 MHz rig (Channelised backpack group
type frequencies) that might appeal to wilderness travellers. Serious groups
now use Iridium but I am sure there are many outdoors folk that could be
induced to amateur radio with such a rig.

I have been browsing EMRFD (Epiphyte) and my WM-20 manual looking at qrp ssb
since.

Cheers

[Elecraft] K2 and Maths

2005-09-14 Thread Glen Torr
Howdy All,

Just ordered my K2 after a couple of years deliberation.

Deciding factor was Kevin's account of listening to CW while working through
maths derivations. Four years ago I enrolled (part time) in a science degree
to learn maths and am having a wonderful time.

The discussion of auto tuner algorithms is also fascinating.

Thanks Guys
