I just turned on my 2m transverter and when I went back to 6m my CW doesn't
work. The display shows + and T and I don't get any power out in CW. Other
modes work fine. I looked at instructions but couldn't figure it out.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 issue in CW mode

2014-02-23 Thread Ham Radio
In CW mode it still will not get any power out and I am stuck with the T in
the lower right part of the display.

CW was working fine until I went to 2m and then returned back to 6m and then
subsequently to HF. All other modes are working fine.

Any thoughts or ideas of what I have done would be helpful.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 receive sensitivity drops after transmit

2013-08-29 Thread Ham Radio
I have been having some issue with receive sensitivity dropping several S units
on 40m and 20m after I transmit with no change to SWR both with amplifier in
line and also completely bypassed (meaning I physically disconnected the amp
and went straight to the antenna from the K3).

I am not sure what is going on but this has been happening the past couple
days. If I hit the K auto tuner while the system is bypassed signal levels go
back to normal or the original signal level. I think I read about this before
on the reflector but could not find the string or the potential fix.

Any hints or suggestions on what might be going on would be very helpful.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Mobile install change of plans

2012-11-25 Thread Ham Radio
After a very nice mobile contact with my K3 serial 1391 on 17m today with
Mauritania while waiting for my mom to finish some Christmas shopping at
Kohls, I thought I would provide an update on how the mobile install is
coming.

With the help of my friend and professional installer, we have the K3 nicely
installed into my 97 Silverado. It is working perfectly on all bands
including on 2m (simplex at this point). I am waiting on the next firmware
upgrade before adding repeater memories. The setup includes the mirage
amplfier which I will use if necessary with a dedicated whip for 6m, the Hi
Q 4/80RT for HF, and a small mag mount 2m antenna. Everything works great.

After adding numerous key large torroids at feedpoint and one other spot,
there has been no RF issues and no instability issues with voltage with the
K3. The K3's custom console is just about done with a couple mods still
needed. I decided to purchase and install a new THP HL450B amplifer and
will be running its remote head in the cab for amplifier control and will
mount the control unit on the panavise that previously held my KX3. The
THP HL450B amplifier is approved by the FCC and available at HRO. It should
be here in San Diego on Friday. The deep cycle battery in the tool box is
raring and ready to go to support this amp. The electrical system in the
truck is designed for up to 100 amps according to the installer so plenty of
headroom for that reasonable sized mobile amplifier. Once done it should be
a pretty schweet setup for a mobile system.

I plan on using the KX3 as my portable travel rig and I do love it still but
it was not a good match for my old pickup truck. I am enjoying my K3
immensely in the mobile.

What do I do to enable fldigi to read the frequency from the K3?

In FLDigi select Configure and choose rig control. Then select the
Hamlib tabIn that window check the use Hamlib button, then in the
rig menu box select the Elecraft K3 (beta). The Device should be the
com port that the K3 is connected to. Set the baud rate to the same as
it is set on the K3. sideband: to rigmode The rest of the default
values should work. including PTT via Hamlib command should be checked
then under Harware PTT tab make sure that all boxes are
unchecked. At this point click initalize it should connect and
you should see the frequency read out. be sure to click save and close.

If it fails FLDigi may hang and show 'not responding' for half a minute
or so. if this happens check that the port and baud settings are
correct and that there are no other applications using the same Com Port.

you will find FLDigi will now be able to put the K3 into transmit for
you as well without the PTT connection, this is done through a command
being sent via the serial port rather than PTT or using the RTS/DTS.

if its working close the program and reopen it.this will
permanently save the changes.

rig control is somwhat limited in FLdigi you can change mode and QSY
if you want more control you can use FLRig. the windows version is a
little limited vs the Linux version but it still works quite well for
basic rig control.

[Elecraft] K3 Parts transfer between rigs

2012-10-19 Thread Ham Radio
I embarked on a project to move parts from one K3 to another and I got the rigs
back from my tech elmer tonight. After getting the K3s home, I decided to
follow the procedure to get them operating again.

I had my tech elmer transfer the KAT3, KRX3, KDVR3 and KBF3 from one of the K3
to the other. I now have multiple errors and not sure what is going on. The
first receiver works well and I loaded the filters fine. However, when I went
to load the second receiver and run the synthesizer calibration I received
multiple errors.

E020202 E027979 - ERR DSE
E5 ERR VCO
E000255 ERR VC4
ERR PL2

When I went to install the DSP2 using the utility program I received these
errors.

DSP 2 verification error
Error code OXE2046

I reviewed the manual and it says that I have a DSP Echo. The VCO and VC4
error may suggest my friend installed the cables incorrectly. Pretty bummed
right now. Any additional thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Hi Keith,

You should review the KRX3 assembly/installation manual. There's a resistor
that may need to be modified (see page 21) and maybe some other stuff as
well.

You may have to contact Elecraft support with your error codes.

[Elecraft] K3 2m Internal transverters setting repeater ofsets

I am looking at both the Fred Cady, the K3 2m transverter manual and the K3

You mention 2 K3s, so that brings up the question of what are you
listening to.
There is a difference if you are listening to K3#1 while transmitting on
K3#2, compared with listening on either K3 while listening to the TX

Please tell us whether what you are hearing is the result of your own TX

I decided to reset the K3 and unfortunately cannot find the config file. I
am trying to get it back running and am running into a couple issues.

1) I am getting a ERR BP4 error. I have removed the KP BF3 from the KRX3 as
per instructions.
2) When doing the transmit calibration, I am getting a BND END error on 80
and 40 (am stopped here trying to figure out what is up). When keying into
the dummy load the transmit frequency drops 600 KHz to below 80m band.

This is as far as I have gotten to getting my K3 back to running shape. Any
thoughts on 1) and 2) above would be really helpful!!!

Thanks,

Keith

Keith,

You mention 2 K3s, so that brings up the question of what are you
listening to.
There is a difference if you are listening to K3#1 while transmitting on
K3#2, compared with listening on either K3 while listening to the TX
monitor.

Please tell us whether what you are hearing is the result of your own TX
monitoring or if that is the result orf a proper signal transmitted over
the air (into a dummy load for consistency..

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility and iPad

2012-09-02 Thread Ham Radio
Mike,

That is the next item on my list of purchases. It seems to be the most
logical next thing to get for this set up. I heard from the installer and
he needs one more day to finish it up minus the Hi Q which I am waiting on
to arrive from Woody in Temecula.

It should be a pretty epic mobile system.

I also use the HamLog/Pigtail combo for portable operations and recommend
it, it works very well. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your

We installed the Rammount for the iPad and the KX3 and it looks epic. The
amps are mounted and the electrical and antenna installation is in
progress. Still need to pull wire from engine and new breaker and solenoid
to bed and husky toolbox to the deep cycle Optima battery and the
amplifiers. The Hi Q 4/80 RT is still in transit so that install will
 wait until next week.

In terms of control theough the ipad I am planning to use the iSDR
software with a simple logging program (MacLogger possibly) and upload
later when at my home QTH.

I was doing research on IPad ham apps and am looking for other control
software options. Even minimalistic control software besides iSDR. I was
also curious if the KX3 utility software and terminal will work on the
 iPad.

Also any perspective on new software developments for the iPad and ham
radio software especially the KX3 would be super appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Install of KX3 in Truck

2012-08-19 Thread Ham Radio
Steve,

I am looking at the Hi-Q-3/80 RT Hi Q antenna. I will also have a separate
vertical for 6m. I also plan to have some small computer installed in the
truck or a small Ipad. I am working with a guy in san diego who does all
the emergency response, Police and FD trucks and cars. We are going for an
epic setup. I have thrown out the budget on this one.

I will post information on my blog as we put this together. The KX3 will be
the centerpoint of this install in my 97 Silverado. So stoked! Probably be
done in about 4 weeks.

I am curious as to what Hi-Q antenna you are installing. Those are real
nice.
I have a Tarheel model 200 and now a 400 (currently installed on my '11
F350, 6.7L). I was tempted to get a Hi-Q but went with the Tarheel as I've
had good luck with them and they are less $$ HI.

In any event, my understanding of the Turbo Tuner is it is RF sensing.
Download the universal manual, it describes how it works in there.

APP connectors can be a real pain if not done absolutely
correctly. I ended up purchasing a ratcheting crimper
from HRO as I could never get just the right force on the
manual one. It was either too weak and the wire would fall
out when tugged, or I would mash it too hard, and the
contact would not fit in to the plastic housing. The
ratcheting crimper is first time, every time, at least for
now

I am pretty sure that we found the culprit. The APP

I spent a lot of time rooting out any RFI issues but I
guess that is really time well spent since cleaning up my
shack and all the cables and wires is probably a good
 idea.

[Elecraft] KX3 arrival

2012-07-21 Thread Ham Radio
I just received KX3 serial 847 yesterday and I have it connected to my
SteppIR 3 element and am blown away by the receiver. It is super quiet and
nice and the roofing filter works extremely well. Made my first QSO with a
local ham for the VHF contest. I am so amazed. I did hear some issues with
the internal speaker so I will need to investigate that but overall it is
amazing.

BTW, baby is still in momma. Gotta run!

Great job Elecraft

Are you running NaP3? I encountered the same thing and found you need to go
into the NaP3 setup and set the highest frequency to 148 MHz. It's 54 by
default, so the rig control function of the software will always QSY you to
54.000 until you change it.

If you're not running NaP3, perhaps whatever rig control software you use needs
a similar setup change.
