That gentleman is mistaken unless something happened while I was not
watching, the KX3 does up to 15 watts.

If I use a large power supply and turn the KX3 on its side and shake it - I
still only get 15 watts according to my Tird meter (Trusty ole Bird).

I have had so many people download the K3 Build video that the site exceeded
its 5GB of bandwidth, i have just paid for a extra 1 gb to get the web site

host it elsewhere for me but i will make a Youtube version later. (They have a
few limits) anyway thanks for all the comments

PS the irony of it, over the weekend i built the K3 i got a ear infection that
means i am now deaf in one ear and the other sounds muffled! i hope the hearing
improves over the week so i can enjoy the K3 and give it some on air testing!

[Elecraft] New K3 SN#207 built but question on AM Filter

2008-01-12 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All
just built my K3 up to the 10 watt level (still to fit the 100w pa) have been
giving it a quick test and have a question, i have fitted the AM filter in FL2
(The FM will go in FL1) and the stock filter in FL3 (2.7KHz), i have set the
filters for all modes and set FL2 (6KHz) for AM mode and also selectable in SSB
Modes.
now when i select SSB and tune to a AM signal i can alter the bandwidth to
anything up to 6KHz, when i switch to AM i can only adjust the bandwidth up to
3KHz , the audio sounds like it is a 3KHz filter too, what am i doing wrong
since i cant set the 6KHz bandwidth in AM.
any ideas???

[Elecraft] CQ FISTS ,SKCC ETC

2007-10-05 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

Sorry to add to the noise level, I took over from Geo , the founder of FISTS
just before he past away and produce the newsletter and fulfil other roles in
FISTS too. Yes we do have many members that will call CQ FISTS, we have a
number of challenges (rather than number exchanging contests that normally fill
the bands), we encourage all our members to make the exchange of numbers (if
they are working another member that wants theirs) almost incidental to the
QSO, and ask them NOT to exclude anyone , member or not that returns to their
call. we are all about getting people to use CW and we certainly do not want to
push people away. I use a straight key myself but have no problem if my QSO
partner wants to use paddles, keyboard, or what ever as long as it CW its good
for me!, If you hear me call CQ FISTS please come back to me member or not,
paddles or straight key, its the QSO that counts not the equipment or numbers.

[Elecraft] K3 CW Memorys

2007-08-30 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

anyone advise me if the K3 will allow for QRS cw sending via the memory. what i
want is to send at a char speed of say 13-15 wpm BUT with a over all speed of
between 5 and 12 wpm. most cw memory keyers i have tried don't allow this and
only let you send slow cw with slow char speeds which just doesn't sound right
at all.

[Elecraft] Help ! i have just killed my K1

2007-07-27 Thread Paul Webb
Was just off to work and decided to take my K1 with me for a a play a lunch
time, picked up a antenna i had been playing with and just connected it to the
k1 in the shack with the antenna thrown around the room, but i was powering the
K1 from a varable bench supply at the time, put it in tune mode and the k1
started to tune, i then noticed that the bench supply was reading around 17v DC
(must be rf getting into it as it was 12.5v before) and current limiting at
around 1.5 Amps.
before i could do anything the K1 went off and a smell of burning from it could
be detected.
now the K1 reads a direct short when you apply power , got to run to work now
but any ideas where to start looking when i get home would be a great help.

[Elecraft] Antenna Question for KX1

2006-04-29 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

I have been playing with my KX1 in the back yard the last week or so and
found that about 26ft of wire in the hot side of the bnc connector and about
the same to the cold side gets me a good match with the built in ATU on
40,30,20m

Now if I use the same wires but add 20ft of coax between the radio and these
wires I find it very hard to get a match on any band, do I need to use a
balun at the end of the coax?

Any thoughts

Paul

[Elecraft] L3 mod done, no problem

2006-04-11 Thread Paul Webb

Hi Gang
Just done the L3 mod to my KX1 with the 8030 module fitted, I tried the
radio before the mod and L3 did get warm with key down for a few seconds
(about 5-10 secs), it’s a easy mod and didn’t take long to do, afterwards I
did the same test with the new L3 and I can confirm that it certainly runs
much cooler, after about 10 secs key down I could just tell that the core
was slightly warmer than it was when I was in RX mode so I guess that’s
fixed it!.
I checked the power output levels before and after the mod and all seemed ok
I seemed to have dropped about 100mW or so on 80m but gained a couple of
hundred millwatts on other bands , in the real world the power remained
about the same , between 3 and 4 watts on all bands. So im a happy chap.
That’s the lid put back on the KX1 ,never to be removed again (Hi) well not
till the SSB Module comes out! (Don’t Panic Wayne, only kidding)

[Elecraft] My Power out with 3080 fitted and mod kit

2006-04-06 Thread Paul Webb
HI

I have the 3080 module fitted in my KX1 and I have already done the power
mod

With the display reading 13.5v I get the following outputs

All power outs measured using the elecraft DL1 and a good Calibrated Fluke
Meter

80m = 3.74W

40m = 4.14 W

30m = 4.74 W

20m = 3.12 W

Running of nicads I get (7.4Volts on display this morning)

80m = 0.88 W

40m = 0.94 W

30m = 1.18 W

20m = 0.76 W

I know the power output is a little high on 13.8 volt bench supply (13.5v
after internal diode) but I only want to use this radio out and about where
I will

Be running on Battery rather than bench PSU so I am not to worried and main
bands of operation are 80/40m

All the best and I hope this helps anyone thinking about doing the power
mod,

PS I was ½ - 1 watt less on all bands at 13.8V supply before the mod.

2006-03-21 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

My kb3080 module came today, its now fitted and working Fb in my KX1

It’s a bit tight in there now, I hope I don’t need to do many more mods when
the SSB module comes out (Just Joking)

Anyway, the post office didn’t charge me Vat which was nice since I had
ordered a number of other things from Elecraft which came in the same box
today too.

Anyway off to bed now and I will have a better play in the morning, I wonder
if im the first UK KX1 with the 30/80m module fitted??

[Elecraft] For UK members only : Elecraft Display at UK Rally

2006-03-10 Thread Paul Webb
Hi all

Just a line or two to tell any UK members that are in the Midlands that I
will be running a stand this Sunday at

The Wythall Rally. I will be Displaying the K2, K1 and the KX1, along with a
few other bits and bobs like the KAT100 and hopefully the KPA100

I will also be taking the Elecraft XG1 signal generator and if you care to
bring along your radio I will be happy to perform MDS checks for free.

I will also have literature packs from elecraft to give away showing details
of their full range of equipment (Thanks to Lisa in Sales).

If you cant make it to that rally don’t worry, I am also going to others
during the year including possibly the largest UK rally at Castle Donnington
in September which is a 2 day event so you can see me there.

I will have a Elecraft Owners sign in Book (just for fun) so if you do come
be sure to sign in.

Hope to see some of you there

Best 73

[Elecraft] K2 And HRD Problem fixed

2006-02-09 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

I said last night that I had a problem with my K2 and HRD working on my new
PC that is going to be fitted inside of a EC2 case, well its now sorted, In
the end I did a reload and made sure that all the drivers for the new
motherboard where installed and not just the ones XP installed and it now
runs great, it decoded very weak PSK signals fine now just using the on
board sound card

I will fit the PC into the EC2 case and take some pictures for my web site.

All the best and thanks to those that offered help and advice (Don)

[Elecraft] OT. Problem with HRD and K2

2006-02-08 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

Well it’s a bit off topic I know but, I have just built a nice small ITX PC
that will be going into a EC2 case (when I get it), I have just put HRD on
to it and it seemed to be working, but then I noticed I could not decode
much and most was just rubbish on the screen, I tried Digipan 2 and that
works fine, but HRD does not want to decode PSK31 even in single channel
mode, it trys but just prints the odd word and a lot of rubbish even on a
strong signal, any one any ideas?

The K-PC im building will be put on my web site when its done

BTW im running WIN XP Pro.

All the best

Paul

[Elecraft] KX1 with HF Packer Amp

2006-02-06 Thread Paul Webb
Some discussion lately on using the K2 to drive the HF Packer Amp. I
bought the amp kit some time ago and have not yet built it. My main reason
for buying was to use it to beef up a KX1 signal.

Has anyone had any experience driving the Packer Amp with a KX1? My KX1
puts out 4 watts on 40 meters and 3.5 watts on 20 meters. Should have
plenty of drive for the Amp.

Any comments and help will be very much appreciated.

RE: [Elecraft] Help - Fluctuating output power ok K2

2006-02-05 Thread Paul Webb
Hi

I thought I had a similarly problem with my recent build K2 (5324) but it
was me, if your using the Tune Button to key the transmitter you will find
this happens just as you have written, the tune button bypasses the power
control circuits and the power level will jump all over the place , the
power control will seem to be very erratic and not smooth, if this is the
case for you, plug a key in the k2 and use that, when I did it was perfect.
I hope that’s your problem too.
Good luck
Paul
M0BMN

 -Original Message-

I just finished SN 5319 a few days ago and all is working
perfectly except that the output power fluctuates. The radio is
stock with no options. It will not fluctuate while the radio is
transmitting a solid carrier, but as soon as you unkey and start
sending a carrier again, the power will drop or jump several
watts. It is as if the power control was changed but it was not.
It does it on all bands. It does it into a dummy load or an
antenna. The current limiter has been ruled out because it is set
for 3.5 and the current is not exceeding 3.0. There is not
voltage drop on the power supply so I also ruled out a power
supply issue. it is just as if the ALC is kicking in and turning
down the power randomly. When the output power drops, the current
 also drops accordingly.

The radio seems to work perfectly otherwise.

 Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I recall building a transmitter many years ago using a good old 807, anyway
I put one of the caps the wrong way round on the HT side and when the
transmitter was fired up it was like one of those party poppers going off!
Never did find the aluminum can that was part of it! Lots of nice oily paper

Hi I have a bare foot K2 that I only use for digi modes (Normally PSK)
I run about 10 Watts Max on peaks. I don’t seem to have many problems
getting qso's at this power level, I just a have a 1/2 size windom up at
about 25ft here .
Never really needed more power than that, make sue your signal is not over
driven and nice and clean to make sure its readable at the other end.

Hi Pete,
I too am using my K2 and a RigBlaster for psk31. I am only running
between and 5 and 10 watts, or so out on 20 meters and haven't been having
much luck making contacts. Previously I had used a Yaesu rig putting about
40 eatts into the same antenna and had no trouble at all making contacts.

I have almost completed a 35 watt amplifier (HFPacker amp, I think its
called) so I can get a bit more ooomph.

I was wondering if you or anyone else is using the K2 barefoot and if so how
you were doing with psk31?

Thanks Tom

I'm about to install my KSB2 and was looking at the modification listed on
the
website that brings out the microphone jumpers and signals necessary for
digital modes via a ribbon cable and small PC board. I've monitored this
list
for a while and have not seen much posted regarding the mod.

I use my K2 a lot on PSK31 and MFSK16 but but still use a RigBlaster Plus

and have made no mods to the K2 for the digital modes.

It would be nice to have it all in one box, but this way I can switch rigs
very
quickly. I also use an external speaker so I can monitor the received
signals
easily with the laptop soundcard connected.

and its now up and running, I will be fitting the 160m module Tuesday and
then having a play with it, it seems a sensitive rx, I will do a MDS check
(I have the XG1) and report on the figure ,

It did not take to long to build it I must say, now to spend more money for
a SSB Module and maybe the 100Watt amp etc etc etc

All the best and thanks for the support

[Elecraft] Update on Build of K2 #5324

2006-01-29 Thread Paul Webb
HI all

Doesn’t time fly,

I started 5324 on Thursday and now im upto the second stage test,

One Question, I have had is a missing part (RP1) from the front panel which
means the switches don’t work correctly (Scotts sending me one) . I have
another working K2 here so I will “borrow” that front plate to test

My new one, I will use the new control board so I don’t see that that should
be any problem do you???

Im Looking forward to doing the test’s in the morning and will report back
with my results, good or bad later.

All the best

of silly questions as she gets built!

This is the biggest project I have built, I made a K1 around Christmas and
that works FB and im happy with the build quality so im hoping I can manage
with the K2 !

All the best and sorry in advance for all the questions I will be inflicting
on you all.

[Elecraft] Cheap and simple mulitband antenna that works well

2006-01-20 Thread Paul Webb
Hi all

I have just been playing with a nice and simple antenna that seems to work
very well on all the band I have tried it on so far.

Nothing to out of the ordinary but im pleased with it. Basically a
non-resonate dipole, each leg is about 26ft and it needs a ATU to get a
match on any band but my

Little K1 with its ATU gets a good match on all four of its bands
(40/20/30/18m) .

Just coax fed and up at about 20ft for testing and if I can hear them they
seem to be able to hear me.

Cheap and simple to make and works!

All the best

RE: [Elecraft] K2 compared to ?

2005-12-29 Thread Paul Webb
HI

I have a FT1000Mp Mk5 Field here that I have compared with the K2 many
times,
The Field is a great radio, with very nice audio for SSB work, my main
problem with it is the CW rx noise , it sounds like someone blowing over a
bottle top on the narrow filters, if I use the DSP it sounds better but
hollow. The K2 just sounds better for CW (IMHO) I can listen to the audio
from the K2 (or K1) for hours in the shack while im doing other tasks but
the audio from the Field is tiring after a short while, im sure the Field is
a very good radio for many folk but im just not using it , for that reason
its now up for sale and I have now bought another K2 , a K2/100 now that
sits next to the base QRP K2.
I have a switch box connected to the K2 and the Field, tuned both into the
same cw station and switched between the two, my wife who is not a radio ham
and can not read any Morse has been sat in front of the two doing a blind
test and she always chooses the K2 as the one that sounds Nicer .
Good luck with your choice.

Happy New Year

[Elecraft] M0BMN's K1 Christmas present now working !

2005-12-26 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

Thanks to Tom K2TA, I found my problem , D15 was backwards, now K1 #2139 is
alive!

Its working well but just got to get the speaker fitted and bolt it all up.

I have noted that the current drain is a little higher than the spec says so
would like to know what other K1’s are drawing in real life

Mine on Rx is Ok at about 70mA with the backlight option fitted and set to
high brightness

On TX it’s a little high ( I think)

40m 5W @ 14v Supply Current =1.18Amps

40m 2W @ 14v SupplyCurrent = 760mA

Anyone checked their K1’s current on TX and want to comment?

All the best

[Elecraft] K1 on 3 bands 80/40/20m with 4 band card???

2005-12-26 Thread Paul Webb
HI

Having now got my K1 running correctly its time to mod it!

I have the 4 band card fitted on 40/30/20/17m but being in the UK I find
that 80m is the best bet at night, I know I could fit a 2 band card but I
would prefer to keep 40/20m too,

From reading the archive I see that there as been some talk about fitting
80m onto a 4 band card, but I understand if you do you can only use the 4
band module on 3 bands.

Anyone done this and if so what bands can you get? 80/40/20??

All the best

[Elecraft] Problem wth new K1 Build

2005-12-25 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All and all the best for Christmas

I Have just completed the build of my new K1 (Christmas present to myself)
but I have a problem,

I have a 4 band module that I now works fine in another K1 I have tried it
in so im sure that there is no problem with that

It passed all the tests fine on RX ,and with the 4 band module above fitted
no problem picking up sigs.

I carried on and added the Tx section and started doing the checks there,
all seemed fine until I got to the TX check stage.

I use a current limiting supply and set it to 500mA @ 13v

I noticed the rx current with the back light on was just under 70mA so
that’s about right.

When I go to TX by holding in WPM+ WPM-

I found that the psu was drawing the 500ma and current limiting (even with
power request set to 0.1W)

I stopped the test at this stage, unplugged the filter board and re-checked
all the voltages in section 9 page 46 of the manual,

All seems bang on, I put it back into tune mode without the filter board and
noticed that Q6 was just warming up, current drain was around 200mA

Im not sure where to go from here anyone any ideas, it would be great to get
the K1 running in the next couple of days for the g-qrp clubs winter sports.

Hope someone can help

Paul

RE: [Elecraft] K1 Future Improvements to VFO D3, R17, R18 any one tried??

2005-12-18 Thread Paul Webb
Hi

Don’t get me wrong, the K1 is operating well within specs, its just not so
stable as the K2 or the KX1 I have in the shack. If anyone thinks theirs is
stable try this, feed the output of the K1 into a program that will allow a
waterfall display to be configured that allows about 1 hours worth of trace
on screen , I use a QRSS morse prog that seems to work well for this, use a
signal generator (I use the XG1 by Elecraft as a source). Turn on the k1
from cold and quickly tune in the signal at 7.040 for about 700Hz trace on
the pc. Now every 5 mins record the traces freq on the pc or just let the k1
run for a hour and look at the trace. After do the same test with the K2 or
the KX1 . I would be Very supprised if you still say the K1 has no drift,
one interesting thing is that the drift aways seem down in freq after the
first few mins, from cold the first 2-3mins produce a up drift of 10-40 hz
before drifting down, I find about 100Hz drift after the first 5 mins in one
hour. Also while doing the above test put a load on the k1 and put the key
down for 10 sec or so and see what happens when you go back to receive.
In practice I don’t find it any problem at all after the first 5mins but
since elecraft have taken the time to print details about possible drift mod
im sure even they will accept that its not a defect in an individuals radio
but a design problem using a none DDS vfo. If you do a lot of tuning around
like many do in a contest and your QSO's are contest type (i.e. very short)
you will never notice this drift im sure! The display on the K1 still
indicates the correct freq at all times.

I have mine set up for 80 khz and have absolutely no problems with
temperature stability. In July for the FOBB, the top of my K1 got so hot I
literally could not comfortably touch it. I was engrossed in the contest and
didn't notice the sunlight through the trees focusing on the rig. In all
that time, both heating up to sub-nuclear temperatures and cooling down to a
comfortable 105 degrees in the shade, the K1 sat where ever I parked her.

If anyone has temperature stability problems, I'd look for a defect, not a
design change.

I've heard no reports of such experiments in the five years that I've had a
K1 (#175) and been on this list. Reed, K7FLY, in early 2001 reported some
things he did to improve temperature stability not involving any actual
circuit changes (except replacing an abnormally temperature sensitive VFO
votage regulator), at:

http://www.qsl.net/ve3mcf/elecraft_reflect/K1_Temperature_Freq_Drift_Mgmt.tx
t

My old K1 with 170 kHz VFO span (and no stability mods) is surprisingly
temperature stable, and I've not been tempted in the least to improve what
is already very very good. It was recently reported that at least one K1
owner found VFO stability to be better with the capacitor supplied for the
170 kHz span than with the capacitor for the 80 kHz span. I've never used
the 80 kHz option, so I can't report on a similar comparison.

[Elecraft] K1 Future Improvements to VFO D3, R17, R18 any one tried??

2005-12-15 Thread Paul Webb
Hi Gang

Just reading page 59 of the K1 manual and it talks about provisions for
improvements to the VFO temperature compensation

And the use of D3, R17 and R18.

Anyone tried this out and done any before and after tests.

I would be most interested to see if it made any difference, if no one as
tried it anyone know a reason why not to try it or I will

Have a play

[Elecraft] Which caps are better in a VFO?

2005-12-13 Thread Paul Webb
Hi all

In a attempt to get even less drift in my K1 I was wondering which type of
caps are the best to use

Either poly’s like used in the wide tuning range of the K1 or small silver
Mica types that are from the good old days (unused ones that is)

Any thoughts

RE: [Elecraft] K2/100 RFI problem using Astron 20A

2005-12-08 Thread Paul Webb
Hi

I thought I may have had a RFI problem with my K2/100 that I recently bought
but it wasn’t that.

When I hit the tune button sometimes the K2 would start tuning and then half
way through do a reset.

In the end I measured the current into the 100 watt stage and found that
as the tuner tried to find a match the current drawn would

Go up and down as you would expect as the load changes.

But I found that my 20 amp PSU could not cope with some of the very short
current drain that it was asked for and dropped its voltage which caused the
k2 to reset half way through its tune cycle .

I was going to look for a better PSU , till I found how much a new one was!

So in the end I have a 17AmHr Gell pack here that I float across the PSU’s
output this will help the PSU cope with the odd high current pulse and also
act as a standby Supply in the event of a mains failure.

I guess others have found the same problem?

RE: [Elecraft] K2/100 RFI problem using Astron 20A

2005-12-08 Thread Paul Webb
HI Tom

It seems to happen more when the ATU needs to work harder to find a match,
I have a 40m Windom up here and I can load it on all bands with the K2, but
it has to work hard to get me a match on 160m/80m and this is normally when
it happens, its not a problem since I put a float battery across the PSU's
output.
I have had it mess up some of the settings too on my K2 when it happens,
mostly on the DSP settings like turning the RTC menu option to OFF

I have the Ten-Tec Orion supply which is an Astron 20A and also experienced
that symptom as recently as yesterday. When I run on a car battery I do not
notice it.

After the reset I lost my sidetone. Luckily I asked Don W3FPR for advice
before I tore the radio apart. He pointed me to the sidetone source menu
and I got it working again.

My problem ONLY occurrs on 40M. Is yours band specific Paul?

My DC wire between the Astron and the K2 is 18 inches which is how far apart
I keep the units. It also has a large ferrite filter around it.

[Elecraft] A K1 with a Tx offset all the time?

2005-12-04 Thread Paul Webb
Hi

Im Playing with a second K1 here that has a problem and I hope someone can
help,

Its as if there the XIT is on, if fact when I turn on the XIT I can get the
K1 working fine and on freq with just a little XIT

It seems about 500Hz off or so, I have tried adjusting the BFO but just can
get it on the same RX and TX freq.

Signal gen set to 7.050Mhz and K1 dial calibrated to read the same, BFO set
for correct sidetone pitch

But when on TX the k1 is transmitting on 7.049.50 , 500Hz off

Listened on the main station rig which I know is 100% and can confirm the
above. If I tx on 7.050 the K1 will pick it up fine but

When I tx back on the K1 its 500Hz low in freq

Anyone else had this problem?

Going to have a look at my k2 now as I have noticed nearly 200Hz difference
in that from tx to rx freq

[Elecraft] Comparison of T1-K and KAT2

2005-11-29 Thread Paul Webb
Hi

I have a K2 with its ATU and the T1, and I must say that the K2’s built in
ATU works great for me, I have a half size windom that needs a ATU on any
freq below 40m and the K2’s ATU can match it on top band without problem.
The T1 gets a decent match on Topband and a good match on 80, I also have
the K1 with its ATU and that works great even with a short wire on 40 and up
but with a 80m card fitted it can only get me a 2:1 match on 80m, if I turn
it off and use the T1 I get a near 1:1 match.

For my money the built in ATU for the K2 is the best internal ATU I have
found, I also have a FT1000 MK5 and that just about gets a match on 80 and
doesn’t like topband at all. But on the positive side it does make a great
door stop!

All the best

[Elecraft] C78 isnt on Rev D boards but now fitted

2005-11-13 Thread Paul Webb
Hi

I have just searched the archives (should have done this first)

C78 is not shown on the Rev D RF board, but still needs fitting if you use a
80m Module.

It fits next to Q6 on the bottom of the RF board.

Anyway its fitted and the radio works very well on that band with about 7
watts max into a matched load.

Now I have 80m for the winter.

I have recently upgraded my K1-2 to a K1-4 so now I have my old 40/20m

I would like to mod this board to a 80/40m module (good for the winter here

Anyone do this mod and any comments?

Would I only need to change the 20m side, I guess so ??

Any advice ??

[Elecraft] Power calcs and simple charging mod

2005-11-04 Thread Paul Webb
HI all

I have just about finished upgrading my K1 now (4 band module and backlight)

The current drain is about 65-75mA ,depending on volume setting about 70mA
for normal listening.

I have fitted 2400mA cells that just fit .

I have checked the current drain at 4 watts from these cells and it seems
about 1000mA (1Amp)

So I have worked the following out but would just like a check done

Irx = 60

Itx=1000

Tx duty cycle 50% (since CW)

Ratio tx/rx 25%

So in one hour I would be in tx mode for 15mins drawing 1000mA but since
it’s at 50% duty that’s 500mA for 15mins

Which works out to 250mA for 30 mins or 125mA for 1 hr

Plus the rx drain of say 70mA so that’s 70mA/Hrs

Total drain then is 125+70=195mA/Hr

Since I have 2400mA/Hr cells that’s 2400/195=12.3Hrs use

That just seems at lot of use at 25% tx/rx ratio and with 4 watts output
power but it seems right to me., anyone confirm ?

One more little mod I have done to the K1 (which I know I will be shot down
in flames for !)

I wanted the cells in the K1 to be kept topped up ready for action so I
found a pin on the on/off switch that only gives 12volts out when the switch
is in the OFF position

From this pin I took a feed to the cells via a 1amp diode and series
resistor to limit the current to about 25mA on a fully charged pack and
about 50-60mA on a flat pack.

This only supplies charge to the cells when the k1 is connected to external
power and turned off ,so if using the K1 in the field off a gel pack or

the like it does don’t add extra drain to the pack when the radio is turned
on , when the radio is turned off if you want to save any drain to the pack
just unplug it!

It works for me.

All the best

Paul

[Elecraft] Just done the Volume Control Mod

2005-10-27 Thread Paul Webb
HI all

Just carried out the volume control mod , I must say that I didn’t expect
the mod to work so well,

before I had a lot of noise at the low volume end of the pot and also when
using the large external speaker even at zero setting the audio was there,

I didn’t like this for some quite monitoring of the digi freqs,

well after the mod the volume control is nice and quite with no noise at
all, and now when the volume is set to min there is no sound at all.

It’s a good mod if anyone is thinking about doing it.

[Elecraft] Just Checked MDS values on my K2

2005-10-13 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

Just built the XG1 test oscillator and tested out the K2

I also have a number of other radios here that I can compare it against,
only tested a few so far but here are my results

K2 Filter set to 0.7 (which is same as 500Hz filter ,so the manual says)
AGC off, MDS value in CW Mode : -139dBmNot Bad!

FT1000MP MK V with 500Hz filter active, AGC off, CW mode :-137dBm
Still not bad

FT897D with 500Hz filter active ,AGC off, CW mode :134dBM anything
over -130dBM isn’t bad.

So there you go ,still got to test a ft817ND and the icom 703Plus out but
that will another day, well done Elecraft !

All the best

[Elecraft] one quick point about MDS readings

2005-10-13 Thread Paul Webb
Hello again

Just a quick one, I did the K2 test with the ATU on, I put a 50ohn load on
the radio first and tuned that 1.0:1 ,and then replaced the load with the
XG1.

How do you put the ATU in bypass mode, I looked in the manual but couldn’t
find it.

Cheers

Paul

[Elecraft] More problems with the rtty filters this time PSK31

2005-10-10 Thread Paul Webb
Hi all

I am fairly new to the K2 and have been playing with PSK31 on mine for a
week or so, It works great with the K2 just running 5 watts or so but….

When I use the SSB filter OPT1 I net onto the station I want to work and
they come right back, if I look at the water fall I can see the trace of
their signal

But if I then select a narrow filter (I guess im then using the CW filters)
I can see a small move in freq of their trace (about 30Hz)

And I need to retune, I understand that in TX mode the SSB filter is used
all the time so I then have a difference between my TX and rx freq, any one
any ideas what I can do to put this right (other than use the RIT)

I use the RTTY mode so that the compressor is set to 1:1 on psk tx.

Any help would be great

[Elecraft] RE: - New K2 owner and Questions

2005-10-02 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

First let thank all the kind people that replied to my last post about the
Hi Cur warning and volume pot noise.

It really sorted me out,

I have the QRP version and have the internal battery pack, well I spent a
while chatting on 20m last night to a friend and

Didn’t give a thought to the battery, When I checked this morning with a
good shout the voltage was just over 11V and that’s when I get the HI Cur
warning, when I ran it from a nice 13.8 (well 14.4V in fact) supply it was
fine and I can reset the Hi Cur alarm to 3.5 Amps.

The Vol Pot Noise isn’t that bad, not really worth the effort to fix, if it
gets worse I will look at it but im not worrying about that yet, as the
serial number is in the 29xx range it would be pre-new board layout so im
happy now I know there is a fix if I need to take it later.

Just been using Spectrogram to check the filters and adjust them to my
likings , The K2 has had just about all the mods (except volume pot!) done,
so im a very happy camper.

Its got the K2-DI board fitted and that works very well on PSK and SSTV

Thanks Ray If your still taking the mail

All the best and I hope to work some other K2’s on the air soon!

Paul

[Elecraft] New K2 Owner and a few questions

2005-10-01 Thread Paul Webb
Hi All

Just to say Hello, I asked a few days ago if anyone wanted to do a deal with
a ft857/icom 703 for a K2 well,

I had many offers to sell me a K2 so many thanks to all the people that made
the offer.

In the end I bought one from a member of the list and have today had chance
to play with it.

I have a FT1000MP Mk5 Field here in the shack and have been doing side by
side tests with the K2

I must say I am very surprised by how well this little radio works,

First SSB, it seems just about on par with the MP ,if anything many signals
sounded nicer to listen to on the K2!

Now CW

Well I was shocked! The MP is loaded with all the Yaesu filters, Has DSP
filtering too, I found a weak signal and switched between the two radios,

every time the K2 was better, the MP sounded hollow on Cw, well that’s the
best way I can describe it, but the K2 just sounded solid ,

I know which radio I will turning on first now!
NOW THE QUESTIONS

What current level is set on most K2 to avoid the Hi Cur warning, I get it
on a whisle, I have just for now set it to abou 4.5Amps and it seems ok with
that. ( 15 watts o/p )

I have a little noise on the vol pot when I turn it, a friend has the same
on his K2, is there a good way of cleaning the pot?

Well that’s about it (for Now)

One very happy K2 Owner
