[Elecraft] Remoterig control boxes
Anyone happed to have the remoterig control boxes laying around and not in use? I'm looking to get a K3/0 up and running into a remote station. Looked around for past couple of weeks and not finding anything out there. Maybe someone on here is upgrading to the K4 and has some RRC's not in use ??? Re: [Elecraft] Is KX3 going obsolete soon?
Elecraft is good at keeping things hush-hush The little FX-4C, and now the FX-4CR, are selling like hot cakes! Still can't beat the performance of the KX2 or the KX3 though. I wouldn't be surprised if they're not looking "ahead" I too had thought about snatching up a KX3 just to have 6 meters in a trail friendly setup... Later, Todd KH2TJ From: Paul GACEK I don’t think the KX3 is going obsolete and I believe any idea of a KX3+, KX3 v2 or even a KX4, a flight of fantasy. My first CM500 headset actually said “KOSS” on the microphone plug, so yes, they are probably made in the same factory. Re: [Elecraft] Is the Lab599 TX500 a "rip-off" of the KX3?
Quite a bit of discussion of this rig on the SOTA reflector starting some time last year. Since I’m primarily a “field” ham radio operator, the idea of a weather-proof, rugged, QRP transceiver is very appealing. Seriously…just take my money! Of course, being first and foremost a shortwave radio listener, I’m also very interested how the TX-500 might play on the broadcast bands in AM mode. swling.com Also search out OH8STN's videos on youtube. He's been playing around with this rig for a while now too. If I recall correctly, the Nevada distributor is located in Reno. He didn't have a radio at the time I visited his business. Re: [Elecraft] Q codes
It was an unwritten rule, but the use of ZBM2 on any circuit was a big no-no, or at least during my time with Naval Security Group. Anytime we had trubs with an outlying station, we would gather up the translog and any other copy of the Comms and up the chain of command it would go...I think I only saw a ZBM2 fly by once while I was out on Guam. It went across one of IO circuits during GW I. Heard thru the grapevine weeks later that Op was relieved...We were required to maintain a copy of the ACP-131 on the watch floor. It made for some interesting reading on slow mid-watches. I recall we came up with all sorts of Q/Z codes that we Zapped back and forth. I think we used INT QBF Mate K quite often in place of ZBM2 Always a good laugh to get a Chief of the Watch to ask what the hell was QBF... There were all kinds of Z codes in use too that we would throw out just to mess with the ops on the other end...Great times during a slow midwatch! Forget off hand what the Z code was for "Your totally distorted"! but after a weeks worth of watchstanding, I would treat the younger Marines on my watch to total distortion down at the E club on the start of our off time and we'd all get to the "point of no return" (forgot that Z code too!)... 73, Todd KH2TJ Good point Andy! QLF seems to refer to sending ability. ZBM2 refers to overall operating ability ... I think ... The ALT-512 looks interesting in that regard: https://www.aerial-51.com/alt-512/ 73, Todd KH2TJ From: John Harper But, what all this proves, is what's possible in the form factor in terms of with.without PC and ease of connectivity from keeping audio in a digital format for PC exchange. Re: [Elecraft] KX2/KX3 DC Charging
There's not a whole lot of info out there, as well as not many making DC - DC chargers that will work on LiPo or LiFePO4's. I went down this road a couple months back looking for something to run my KX2 mobile out in the boonies and still be able to charge without use of a geny. I stumbled upon an outfit out of VKland that seems to fit the bill. Company called REDARC: https://www.redarc.com.au/battery-chargers/in-vehicle-chargers They do have a US distributor now from what I can tell. Their unit also has Solar input - which would be a plus - and designed to handle the new "smart alternators" that are common on newer vehicles...I didn't know a thing about these newer alternators until I found this site. This is a common deal in VK with all the "overlanders". Dual batteries to run the fridge, radios, and other camp assy's while in the "outback". Charge off of solar while parked, 12vdc while in motion, to keep the LiFePO4's (aux battery) charged. I've used a goal zero inverter, and it works ok - if I don't use it and any radio gear at the same time. ;-) Todd KH2TJ K9MA wrote: Hi Dennis, You're missing the charge controller. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Band Plans
CHP has totally upgraded their system. They use 39,42,44, and 45MHZ inputs/outputs. Most dispatch comm centers, but not up here in extreme NorCal, repeat the mobiles on the main base dispatch channel. Makes it easier to listen to both sides. They run their extenders in the 700MHZ range using P25 digital. They were supposed to upgrade the whole system to a statewide 700MHZ P25 digital system covering the whole state. But, no money $$$. Imagine that! No more extenders on the old 154.905 freq (was a poor man's radar radar detector!) ;-) When I hear statewide CHP comms, or other state low band Highway Patrol, I know that something is happening on six... I've done Diablo several times, usually right before Pacificon. The one time I did North Peak, it was worse RF wise than Diablo. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Solar backpacking power advice
I've done this. For a 2 - 3 day trip, you'll be fine with some of the batteries that K9YC mentioned. Bioenno is/was giving a discount to the active SOTA group. In the past, on short trips I've found that if you're not going to stay put in one area, then you wont need solar at all. The LiFePO4's will be plenty. Until I started using the LiFePO4's, I used an Energizer XP8000, roll up thin film panels (2 @10Watts), and the solar charger that the Buddipole guys sell. It's what I had from days of playing out in the hills. The Energizer is slick in that it will take 19V from the panels and charge, while also providing several outputs for laptop, cell phones, radios, etc. Kinda pricey though. I stay with the 12.6V LiFePO4's. When not playing radio, can be used for other camp chores/duties like LED lighting, cell phone, camera, etc etc Have fun. 73, Todd KH2TJ Joe Moffatt wrote: Anyhow, I am trying to figure out what to use for portable solar rechargeable power while backpacking in the mountains. Re: [Elecraft] TS-990 (Don Wilhelm)
Don, Nice analogy. Catch and release fishing. So, you can sit quietly by the stream and wait for a rise or use a full color fish finder while trolling. I like to do both styles of fishing and both forms of radio operation. Both take skill and a knowledge of how to use the basic tools. To each his own, because the one thing we won't hold back is the rate and pace of innovation. Might as well enjoy whatever is in front you and roll with the changes. Another vote for Win4K3suite plus DXlabs. Asus Xonar U7 for the sound system. [Elecraft] switching VFO A knob to B VFO
Is it possible when operating split to use the larger A VFO knob to control the B VFO and the smaller B knob to set the A VFO freq? I am asking this as I will be operating W1AW/3 and if I have to work split it would be easier to leave the xmit freq controlled by the smaller knob and tune the “spread” with the large VFO A knob. Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Center Freq Left Edge Command
Jim AB3CV wrote I've been scanning the P3 Programmers manual looking for a way to combine commands to achieve the effect of making the VFO-A frequency set to the left edge of the display. I found a way to trick the P3 into setting the frequency to the left edge for USB, Data, RTTY and CW or right for lower sideband. It is a combination of K3 and P3 commands which are mode dependent. I wanted to be able to look at a signal with a narrowed span with the carrier at the edge. I use DXLabs Commander to execute the macro commands. It ends up tickling the P3 to do what you want. I included examples for USB and LSB. I have versions for CW, Data and RTTY as well. I know it looks silly from a command standpoint but it works pretty repeatably. I use a series of ifmode statements in Commander to pick the correct macro commands based on mode {not shown}. The result when the commands execute is the Carrier goes to the edge and then the span is set 4.5Khz so you can look at the signal your listening to across the full display. Try this for USB: [The wait is a delay that is specific to Commander's macro language] 'dn4; '#CTF+000; '#spn20; '#fxt0; wait wait 'up5; '#fxt1; wait wait '#spn45; 'dn5; 'up4; LSB I use this: 'up4; '#CTF+000; '#spn20; '#fxt0; wait wait 'dn5; '#fxt1; wait wait '#spn45; 'up5; 'dn4; Hope this helps. [Elecraft] APF
Dear List Readers Eureka moment! I finally figured out how to use the APF effectively, and it really does work on digging out weak sigs. [Elecraft] APF
I have received 2 inquiries about how to use the APF. Well, I’ll put it to you this way. I used to be a photographer and used a 5X7 view camera. The image on the viewing glass was upside down, both the front (lens board) and rear (view glass) board swiveled from side to side and up and down. It was very frustrating for a 20 year old perfectionist to figure out how to manuever either of the boards together or individually to get the desired image. My teacher was very Zen about it. He said “F….k with it until it looks right. Basically this is what I did to pull in Zorro in Myanmar who was a hair above the noise level. Every time I used the APF previously I got too much ringing and couldn’t hear the signal I wanted to zero in on. Truly, today it was a matter of opening up the width and lowering the shift to get rid of the ring, then playing with the two until I could hear his signal at its best. Switching back to the regular roofing filter (400 hz) didn’t cut it. The APF isolated Zorro enough to copy him Q5. So my answer and my future technique will rely on messing with both the width and the shift until you can get rid of the ring and eke out the signal. I am sure Don Wilhelm, Wayne and Jim Brown will weigh in on me being overly simplistic but it worked for me and we are both in each others log! 73 todd WB2ZAB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 Ordered - Battery/Power Questions
Greetings Elecraft group, Todd Atkins K4MSW here. I've been QRT for some time but recently ordered the KX3 kit loaded up with all options and about to jump back in the hobby again. I am needing to place an order for some power options and wanted to run this by you guys, first. I did attempt to search the reflector for battery info but a lot of it looks old/outdated and I'm getting older too, so I need some guidance/advice. 1. As for internal batteries, seems that a good deal is the Sanyo Eneloop XX 2500mAh LSDs. I can get 8 of these on Amazon for $30.24 shipped. Are these adequate? Also, the internal battery charger on the KX3 will charge these just fine (probably overnight) so I don't need a separate charger, correct? 2. I'd like to have a power cord/wall cord just in case I'm outta batteries or need to operate at home. I want the full 10-12 watts out of the rig, so I realize I need a proper 13v+ clean supply. I found one on Allelectronics for $16.00 http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/PS-154/15VDC-4A-SWITCHING-POWER-SUPPLY/1.html and the specs are: Model # SPU-45. Input: 100-240V 50/60Hz, 1.2A Max. Output: 15Vdc, 4A. 6' cord with right-angle 2.1mm coax power plug, center positive. Would this one be ok? 3. I do want to be able to get the 10-12W portable as well, so I'm hunting for reasonably priced LIPO, LiFePO4, or A123 but I'd rather not have to mess with a voltage limiter, etc. I've looked at the A123's sold on the Buddipole site but they are a bit expensive. The 4S1P and the Cellpro Multi4 Charger combined are about $175. Can anyone comment on this brand? I know Buddipole puts APP connectors on the battery and charger which is nice. Any other more cost effective options you guys have used successfully? 4. Anyone have link for an appropriate power cable that plugs into a car cigarette lighter? Would it be safe to go straight into the KX3 from the cigarette lighter, or maybe fuse is needed? Many thanks in advance guys. Sorry if I've asked for information already covered. Links and references to previous threads, sources, and articles would be great, and of course your replies/advice are appreciated. 73 de Todd, K4MSW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA used as modem for DxLab WWW or other apps
Giorgio, I played around with WinWarbler by creating a modem definition for the K3 and added it to modem list similar to what you have for the KAM. (FYI...I still use my Kam+ with the K3 for RTTY and CW). As long as Commander is not running and no P3 attached, I was able to use the TTn; command to flow the decoded text to WinWarbler. Dave needs to take a try at using the TB command approach to facilitate a real terminal that would allow Commander to remain running and allow the decode and transmit available to the WinWarbler user. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Thanks for the RIT tip.
Mike, That was useful. Setting the Config:VFO CRS also sets the Mic up/down button step size. I have a little box with two buttons beside the keyboard that was tuning in 1khz steps, and is now .5khz steps. That is much more useful when tuning SSB bands. I had not connected the VFO CRS setting with the step size of the up/down buttons. Thanks. Glad I tried the different setting. 73, Todd. Mike Rodgers wrote I don't remember but someone a week or so ago was talking about vfo tuning rates and using the RIT knob for tuning with RIT off. I've set the RIT for 0.5kc rate. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Software
I posted an early version of my controls in the yahoo files section at the request of others, many months ago at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/files/ So, look for Commander K3.exe It has a complete commander implementation with macro's and sliders to control the K3 and P3. The sliders and macro's are interwoven so pressing a control button sometimes changes a slider to give a visual representation. The files are explained in a pdf posted with the self extracting archive. You can look at the panel shots (Commander panel shots v.1.pdf ) to get an idea if you would be interested. It was an early attempt, I have changed things around a lot since, and added other macro buttons. For instance I have one that allows me to zoom in on a SSB signal and fill the pan display with it without having to settle for the base band starting in the center of the display. Others have posted macro's in the DXLab files section: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dxlab/files/Command%20Sequences%20%26%20Sliders/Elecraft/ In the end you need to understand how Commander works for creating macro's and what is possible in the K3 command reference to make sense of this, but when you do it opens up all sorts of possibilities beyond simply replicating the front panel or config controls. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Software-tp7562908p7572885.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Remote VFO tuning control
I like operating from the keyboard and mouse whenever possible, but sometimes a hardware device that does not require the computer to be on is best. (For reference: I am currently running a hybrid approach to handle frequency changes. In SSB as an example, the majority of the time I run DXLabs with the mouse selecting Commander and a 100hz tuning rate, the radio is set to coarse tune at 1Khz steps. Fine tuning is done using the mouse wheel, but I created a 2 button (1x1.5 box) controller that sits beside the keyboard to do coarse tuning. I press the up/down buttons to make steps and the mouse wheel to correct for folks running .5khz center frequencies or older rigs.) I would love a knob that plugs into the K3, that has buttons to program, that also selects between coarse and fine tuning. 73, Todd -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-suggestion-tp7568165p7568413.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 won't power up... ???
Hello. I was using my K3 this morning and suddenly it just shut off. I thought it may be the power supply . so I switched to another one. when I hook the red/black DC power cord up to power supply the power supply won't turn on .. but if I unhook the power cord, the power supply will work as it should. Both power supplies work fine with my little FT 857D. I checked the fuse on the back of the K3 to see if it had been tripped but all seems to be ok. When I turn the power supply on ... it will turn on for a spli second and go right back off. Any suggestions on how to get the K3 to power up again ? Thanks... Re: [Elecraft] KX3 roofing filter touching DC jack
Hi Mike, I had to file off the small bumps on the edge of the filter circuit board to get mine to fit properly. This was okayed by Elecraft. Be sure to wear an ESD strap while doing this. Just a thought. I have very carefully looked to see if the roofing filter is seated and it is also the long screw fit no problem into the roofing filter board to hold it in place as well...any ideas?? Re: [Elecraft] New beta K3 firmware!
Don't we already have the option to beta the feature to use the FM filter for AM via macro's. I'm not sure which way to spin the VFO dial for the band width selection, but the macro seems simple enough to build. To set to AM with the filter set to 13Khz and needing to go to 6Khz: MN038; FLx BW SWT11; press [1] UP; run the vfo dial to the setting for a narrower filter (might be down I'm not at the rig) MD5; Set the rig to AM mode MN255; exit the menu FM Mode: MN038; FLx BW SWT11; press [1] DN; run the vfo dial to the setting for a narrower filter (might be up I'm not at the rig) MD4; Set the rig to FM mode MN255; exit the menu So, anyone that wants to beta the feature just needs to build a couple of macro's? I did not read the whole thread, but this seems obvious. I'll try it tonight. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-RF-feedback-tp7561833p7563212.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Software
Have you looked at DX Labs Commander? The macro capabilities let you adjust pretty much anything that can be set in the K3 via software control. You need to do the customization by developing the macro's, but the end results are very good. I run the K3/P3 completely from the keyboard and the mouse. The mouse wheel dials the frequency up and down. Fkeys are set for frequent operations, and sliders and soft buttons do the rest. Each macro can have up to 32 steps. The only bug I have found is that the NR settings won't change using the UPB and DNB commands, but that is a K3 known bug. 73, Todd -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Software-tp7562908p7562945.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 and AL-811 amplifier interfacing...
The AL-811 manual states that Relay: keys amplifier when grounded. Sources +12 VDC open circuit and supplies 100mA when grounded. A built-in pulse canceling diode protects the exciter. The K3 is pretty robust KEY OUT (RCA/Phono) is the amplifier T-R relay keying output, capable of keying up to +200VDC @ 5A. The relay coils back emf is contained by the diode across it. So, no issues switching the AL-811. 5A's and 200Vdc withstand voltage, beats 100ma and an applied 12Vdc source all day long. 73 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-and-AL-811-amplifier-interfacing-tp7561650p7562241.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] XG3 synthesizer question
The schematic on page 25 of the XG3 manual shows that U1 is a CS2100, which I assume is a Cirrus Logic CS2100-CP (the one with I2C). The datasheet says (as I understand it) that the output frequency from the chip is 6 to 75 MHz (pin 3). The Elecraft specs say the unit outputs 1.5 MHz to 200 MHz (with harmonics also usable up to 1.4 GHz). So I'm trying to square the CS2100 datasheet with the manual, at least as I understand them both. Specifically: 1. How does the XG3 operate below 6 MHz? 2. How does the XG3 operate above 75 MHz? And even more specifically: 3. If the XG3 is set to 144 MHz, is the resulting square wave 144 MHz, or a subharmonic? I'd also be very curious to know if anybody's measured the phase noise at different distances from the carrier. The manual indicates -105 dBc/Hz, but doesn't say how far this is from the carrier. A plot would be very interesting. [Elecraft] Headset recommendation for the K3
Hello to all on the list I'm a relatively new K3 owner, and this is my first post to the group. I purchased my K3 back in March ( SN# 5331 ) and just recently purchased the P3 ( SN# 1435 ). First of all let me say the customer service is hands down the best I've ever experienced, and the user group has been a wonderful help to me, as I learn the art of operating my K3 !! I enjoy both SSB and CW although I don't ragchew using CW, I do chase and work DX in that mode. I have tried various headsets with my K3 including the Yamaha, that so many here on the list recommend. I have found a new headset that I like better than any I have tried, and I just wanted to recommend it to the group. I enjoy both SSB DXing and contesting and this headset is great for all SSB applications. It's the Turtle Beach / Ear Force Z1 ... Its a light weight gaming headset designed for PC's and it's only $29.95 ... I picked it up at Walmart. The sound of this little headset on both TX RX will surprise you !! For more info on the headset ... go to my blog at www.n4la.com Thanks for all the tips everyone, and yes I'm a very satisfied K3 owner !! 73 de N4LA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
