Re: [Elecraft] DX Clusters reccomendation
Paul, You will probably find what you want to know here: https://www.dxcluster.info/ Your first choice to try are some of the more "open" clusters: VE7CC-1 W3LPL Part 2 is interpreting what you see. Since many DX Clusters report everything they are sent worldwide, Log4OM is probably like other loggers in that there is a way to limit what you see to a distance range circle around your locator. You should consult the Log4OM docs for setting that parameter. The software has more bells and whistles than I could ever imagine using. One of it's features is the ability to connect to various DX clusters for spotting. This is something that I have never done in the past but it looks like a very nice tool to use. Log4OM has a long list of clusters. Does anyone have a recommendation for one or two of the more popular and reliable ones to try out? Jim, All, James Bennett Wrote: > However, what I?m seeing is that when the amp is in OPER mode, my receive > signal strength drops way, way off to the point I have to go full AF volume > to hear signals. If I put the amp in STBY, signal levels go back to normal. I > also notice that the amp fan doesn?t take too long to crank up to high speed, > and the PA temp is sitting around 67 C. I occasionally use an IC-705 to drive either a KXPA100, a KPA500/KAT500 pair, or both in cascade. I have a keyline splitter (the one for the KX3 to the KXPA) that allows me to cascade the KXPA100 to the KPA500. After I accidentally popped ~100W into the input of the KPA500 while experimenting with the switching arrangement, my system suddenly had the identical problem Jim describes, a much attenuated signal on receive and normal transmit. It was R9. Taking the amp apart was much more involved than replacing the resistor. I found R9 split in two and the two halves standing (yes, really) on the solder pads. (photo available on request). The very kind folk at the mothership sent me a replacement for R9, a surface mount 50 ohm resistor, and it was an easy repair. I have everything set up with switching so I don't do it again. Now, when I put the IC-705 into the "cascade" mix, I set the rig output power to 5% which results in a 25-30W output from the KXPA100. 30W will drive the KPA500 to full power. I also use a sequential check list every time I bring the IC-705 into the shack to avoid the uncomfortable "oops" moment again. Note: make sure that the keyline that goes to the IC-705 has a 480 ohm resistor in series with the keyline jack tip when using a KXPA100... without it you can't use the IC-705 voice memories or the "DV TX Message" data in DR/DV mode without having the rig lock up in a transmit key up loop. The series resistor seems to have no effect on the ability of the 705 to key the KPA500. Please ask me offline if you have any additional questions about this setup. It has been stable and predictable ever since the repair was done 2 years back. Fred, Byron, All, Fun OT thread! I am looking at my K Cooke Radio (Modified Polyphase Duplex Decitrig) and it's manuals... bought at the K store in NYC in 1972 while I was at USCG ET "A" School at Governors Island, NY. It still works! Next to it is my old Bowmar "Brain" calculator that I acquired a little later... also still works, but only with its power supply. Somewhere along the way there were a half dozen others - none really worth keeping since cell phone apps do the same basic calculations. I still prefer the slide rule approach because I don't need to judge what number of insignificant digits to discard/round off. Re: [Elecraft] Power supply for KX3
Paul, The Astron is a real workhorse and a keeper if in good shape. If you must go light/small and are just powering the KX3, I would point you to Howie’s (ProAudio Engineering Kx33) power brick. It is nominally a 4A supply in same form as the laptop power supplies. Mine is quiet and a solid performer. That being said, I have the Powerwerx unit as well, not bad, but mine does create some low level RFI and fan noise both of which can be dealt with. If you are hooking up more than one piece of gear like the PX3 and other “stuff”, keep the Astron. The KPA100 depends on internal signals from the base K2 such as AUXBUS and several other signals to operate and control power output. In other words, it is an amplifier dedicated to the K2 and not a general purpose amplifier. The KXPA100 and KXAT100 would serve you better than cobbling up an interface that would be quite complex. he signals needed are those in the 9 pin AUX IO connector. AUXBUS allows the base K2 firmware to 'talk' to the KPA100 firmware IC as well as the KAT100 firmware. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2021 10:59 AM, Robin Tew wrote: > Hi All > Just thinking about using the KPA100/KAT100 EC2 Combo with the Icom 705. > > Any pointers, ideas, tips etc. To achieve this?. > Many thanks > Robin G4JDO > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to kd...@frawg.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610
Buck, I have a similar setup with an IC-7300 and my KAT500/KPA500 combo. It does not auto band change before key up. It does change on a quick, low power tune however. IIRC I made a not so recent inquiry to Elecraft yielded the explanation that my experience was correct. If I can find the message I will post the text. As Ken WA2LBI indicated in his message, what I did subsequently was to jettison the "ICOM AH4 cable" set up (KAT500 Owners Manual, pg 8 to 10) and just used a generic Analog radio configuration. The frequency sensing capabilities of the ATU and amp do the job fast and efficiently. Currently I use a 4-way RCA audio switch to select the keyline sig from one of the HF radios I use and a remote antenna/rig selector (MFJ 4724) to route the selected rig to the amp. The KAT500 remembers my preferred HF antenna for the band I have chosen to use so the antenna side of the MFJ is used to switch other coaxial feeds. [Elecraft] KXPA100AT with non-Elecraft transceiver weird issue
To the group amplifier gurus: I have been (happily) using an IC-705 to drive my KXPA100AT or my KPA500 with virtually no problems for about 2 months now. Set up is an IC-705 driving either a KXPA100AT or a KPA500. The keyline to the amplifiers is a 1/8" stereo plug cable from the send/alc jack of the rig to an RCA plug on either amp. Mostly use other radio combinations, but occasionally I use the 705 plus amplifier combinations for simplex D-Star over HF (DV mode). The sole issue that has popped up is when using IC-705 for HF D-Star with the KXPA100AT (regardless of rig frequency). In DV mode and only when I have a transmit message set, on the initial key up the rig goes into continuous repeated transmit. This can only be interrupted by pulling the key line to the amplifier or shutting the rig off. When I disable the TX message, the rig and the amplifier behave normally in DV mode. The KPA500 does not exhibit this behavior. I would love to know what is going on here. Is it something which transmitting more data than the normal ID data packet that goes with D-Star voice data causes? It would seem so, but why does the combo continue to cycle into TX when the data is already sent? Truly odd, but fortunately I can avoid the problem by remembering to turn off the TX message. When the TX message is off, the amplifier behaves like a gem. The KXPA100 switching circuit is likely pin diode based as no relay sounds can be detected. This is not made clear in the Theory of Operation section of the user's manual and since there are no circuit diagrams provided, that can't be verified. I am forwarding this to Elecraft Customer Service as I understand that I will not be the first to make the observations. Thanks for the bandwidth! Re: [Elecraft] T1 Question
Jim, This is an interesting question. Eric and Wayne were authors of the design and updated the schematic (at least according to mine dated 2017). One of them may be able to tell us. The MCU type is listed in the schematic, but without knowing how big the memory block is, it is hard to tell what of the memory could be written to in the EEPROM area. Hopefully one or other will chime in and let us know. [Elecraft] KPA500 low RX sig when amp is in OPER
All, My KPA500 amp, (#2208 kit built), was acquired used but well cared for. It has operated perfectly for several years until today. I was in QSO on 40M when the amp threw a fault and the signal strength of received signals dropped markedly. When I put the amp in standby, the signal strength of the received signals returned to expected levels. I do get a TX power indication appropriate to the drive level on keying up. This issue does not clear when the power is cycled. I have done a cursory RTFM and find there is not a circuit diagram in the manual nor a description of how to interpret the fault (beyond the plain text listings). I have not yet had the time to dig into the archives at Elecraft or look through the files on the website. If this "symptom set" sounds familiar and/or you can point me to where and how I could troubleshoot, I will be quite thankful. Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants
Ham Expo is an "OK" idea for the "time of COVID", but not a replacement for the live convention or hamfest. I quickly found that the design of the virtual event does fit not my way of learning or operating. I will not specifically address the Elecraft presentations except to say they were much better than most. 1. A few "venues"/talks were great, too many were purely canned promo that I neither needed nor wanted hear again. Other talks were presentations rehashed. Overall there was a startling lack of really new content. 2. It was not possible to "walk around and discover" - the essential small businesses, the idea creators, hobby/business makers, and boneyard folks were not there. 3. Meeting people (particularly new people) in yet another virtual room is not the way to spend a weekend after weeks of Zoom and GoToMeeting teleconferences. Nothing meets the organized or chance in-person encounter. 4. "Influencer" style YouTuber blather really turns me off. I need something to think through and evaluate... unfortunately that has become a norm to some presenters. Many thanks to those who presented material designed to stimulate thought. 5. Commercial venues were "OK". The front end presentation was too "cartoony". Some MFG did better than others in their "in booth" presentations. The cartoony booths were inevitable result of low end virtual technology trying to look like real life... but virtual booths have been there in professional conference and trade show apps for years - it felt stale to me. 6. Agree with the many other comments about the "contest" style promotionals. Organizers need to "go back" to the registration lottery. Forced competition to participate is a symptom of the illness in "radio-sport" - when everything becomes centered on "bragging rights" the braggarts take over. 7. Person hardest issue to deal with was being asked sitting in front of a yet another computer screen for an additional 12 to 18 hours at the end of a rough online week. I have picked a few venues I heard were good and spent time listening to those. My Bottom Line: I won't bother next year without hearing of some significant improvements, particularly an added opportunity for interaction with presenters. Unfortunately mine is a generally negative assessment. The Real Bottom Lines: -How many of the participants actually stayed through during most of the active online event (or spent the 12-18 hours afterwards reviewing it). My guess is a small fraction of those who registered. -Did the sponsors see any significant ROI or did most of it go to the committee that put the Expo together and the virtual convention company that produced it. That last "real bottom line" will tell the tale and probably dictate the future of this event. Re: [Elecraft] Headphones
Clay, Have to agree about OTE headphones. I am hearing impaired and have not found a "truly compatible" over the hearing aid solution. The best one for me so far is the Sennheiser S1 avionic headset (no longer available). I happened to have one from my flying days. It has the best TX and RX noise cancelling function I have found. It is a shame that Sennheiser did not continue them. I have not played with the Bose or LightSpeed sets since my early experience with both being too tight. I have used the Sennheiser PXC 550 II set with the Kenwood D74A BT feature and gotten good voice reports. They are also OTE and good for those of us with larger hat sizes, but did not work acceptably without taking off the hearing aids. They do work without a lot of BT lag so might be acceptable for CW. I never used either with my KX3. Re: [Elecraft] Applause for KPA-1500
And I will second Bob's comment about the KPA500/KAT500. In line with the "plays well with others" marketing theme about all of the Elecraft amps, it is a seamless and stellar performer with some of the ICOM radios. I use it with both the 7300 and 7100 here. ICOM's use of a "different" ATU interface language is not a help, but is also not a hinderance if you understand those differences. My antenna system has similar capabilities to what he describes. In my dreams... would be great to own a K4, but that will not happen unless I win the lottery... Re: [Elecraft] The Future of Our Hobby
This discussion reminds me of how the parable, The Blind Men and an Elephant, fits our sacred hobby to a "T": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant We are all "right" in a narrow sense but we are all "wrong" because our view points are so skewed by our perception of truth. We are each just "bloviating" when we hold forth on the subject. Have any of us ever tried to poll younger non-related and non-ham persons in a structured way? Probably not. Do we really understand: What "they" know/don't know about technical hobbies? What "they" know about amateur radio? Why it might be interesting or uninteresting to "them"? I don't think so. I have tried (unscientifically) to ask these questions of younger folk I interact with professionally without identifying myself as being "an older geek". I can't begin to categorize the answers because they are so varied. Introspectively, what I do see is one generation of an old civic (mostly men's) club in a panic because we perceive we are all dying off and there will be no one to "carry on". Our cohort is blind (well, maybe just really myopic) and are incapable of clearly seeing the whole truth... amateur radio is a very diverse but extremely niche hobby, it does not belong to a single interest group - not techies, talkies, first responders, contesters, physicists, space frontiersmen, or preppers. An awfully large group of people look at "us" as odd or funny old dudes... The media has never helped us much... Herman Munster? Come on. Mike Baxter? Really??? Ham radio is just a TV prop and usually used to poke fun at certain attitudes. OTOH the actual high value stuff we occasionally do is all too often relegated to 11pm local news as "filler" if it is reported at all. Who failed? Not even worth pointing fingers... we did. Embrace it, have fun with the hobby, chill, let the marketing departments at "IKY" and "China-Inc" figure out the sales pitch. We geeks will still be here in the future and some will be hams... and we'll line up for the latest widgets. Inevitably, they reveal a patchwork of Dead Zones (DZs): places where coverage is not just bad...it's non-existent. In such inhospitable realms, your choices are smoke signals, sat phone, or ham radio. This smacks of an opportunity. Hence DZOTA. DZOTA places are often DeZerted. In fact, they are often in dezerts, in contrast to many of the conspicuous high places typical of SOTA. This may be a benefit to outdoor radio enthusiasts who, when hiking, prefer level ground or even a gentle downward slope. And in an emergency, those hikers might be the only ones around with comms. Where are the most notorious DZs? I have a few tiny cell network black holes in my urban neighborhood, thanks to AT But the truly inspiring DZs are far from civilization, covering tens or hundreds of square miles. Typically, they're also far from sources of noise. I have no illusions that DZOTA sites will be officially tracked and chased anytime soon. They can provide you with a net time slot that is "multi-mode", ie. reflector, room, and TG, supporting the 3 major DV modes plus EchoLink, etc. Investigate at D-Star XRF757A, DMR BM TG 31012, and YSF US QuadNet Array, number 37099, Echolink WWARG Conference. Best and good luck. [Elecraft] ICOM to KAT/KPA500 key issue resolved
To make a long story short: I found that some pins in the E100416 13 pin DIN connector to RCA cable were not making a solid connection. The pins and the metal ring-shield in the DIN are thinner than the ICOM supplied connectors. The DIN connector did not seat properly and would wiggle, breaking contact as placed. Apparently the HSEND line pin would not make contact at all in the IC-7100, but would make a tenuous contact in the 7000 and 7300. Replaced the adapter with a homebrew cable using an ICOM 13 pin pigtail and an RCA video cable I had lying around, the DIN seat is solid and the amp and tuner work fine on all three radios now. All things are now harmonious. Thanks to Cody at Elecraft for his quick response to my query! Hope my observations help another poor soul who mixes and matches his /her gear. Re: [Elecraft] KPA/KAT500 Mystery Fail - solved
Thanks to some (kind advice and well deserved goading) from Mike, K6MKF and Ken, WA2LBI – I worked out the issue – unfortunately the fix appears to be a visit to ICOM repair if access to components is as bad as I fear. For the general edification of other ICOM 7XXX owners: Two KEY control lines go from the ICOM 7100 and 7300 rigs to the KPA/KAT500 combo. 1. The ICOM Molex connector KEY line is part of the TUNE/operate trigger function to the KAT500 along with the START line. 2. Pin #3 (HSEND) of the 13 pin DIN connector is the KEY function used by the KPA500 KEY line input. It is a bi-directional line. Normally, HSEND appears to float at about 6 volts. If this line is pulled low by external equipment, the transceiver is keyed. When the transceiver is keyed, the line is pulled low, keying external equipment. Maximum line current 200ma. This is what the 7300 was doing… so all was OK there but... My 7100 showed an HSEND float voltage of 2.3V and did not drop to ground when the rig was keyed – apparently the keying circuit is smoked. Looks like there is a diode in between the circuitry and the connector (hope-hope). Not sure why this blew because these puppies have been in use with the KPA500 and relatively trouble free for a while from what I understand… probably operator error/shuffle static damage on my part. Glad it wasn’t a KAT/KPA500 issue. Re: [Elecraft] KPA/KAT500 Mystery Fail
Hi Ken, All, Mike, N6MKF, sent me a direct email recommending that I try cleaning the connectors. I followed his recommendations again. No joy. The 7100 does not behave as a “generic” rig. Remember that the more recent ICOM’s all use a 4 pin Molex for their ATU connection and have a 13 pin DIN connector that has all the other coding data and audio on it. Please see the cabling instructions on pages 8-10 in the KAT500 manual to see the wiring I use. I checked the RF run: The coax cable is connected through an antenna switch to the KPA500 which in turn runs to the ATU. If I by pass the switch, the behavior is the same. AFAICT that path is fine. The * (asterisk) does not show when the 7100 is keyed, so it appears that either the 7100’s HSEND line in the 13 pin DIN or the KEY line in the Molex is the issue. Basically the KEY line is the not the only key line signal… and HSEND is “bi-directional” so that complicates things. I am not sure which one is routed to the KPA (or if they interact somehow). I know the KPA/KAT side is behaving as it should because they work with the 7300, so I will check both lines in both rigs and compare what they do when keyed. Probably the only way to tell if something needs repair or a connector is not making contact in the 7100. Thanks for thinking this through with me. Re: [Elecraft] Urban stealth HF: Inside-the-backpack loop antenna?
I love the AB7E concept... Looks an awful lot like birth of a new character for cosplay and a Comicon run to me: "EtherMan" - the RF belching steampunk simulacrum of an Isaac Asimov automaton! A little work with the 3D printer, an RPi with a 7" display, and some burnished 10 gauge wire coil gauntlets, chest shield flip down mount for the KX2. Ah the possibilities! KA6LMS doesn't stand a chance. Anyone want to give it a go? Seriously now, has anyone looked at the rf field issues - ie the effect created by the position of the person (a 70% water, protein gel matrix) with the backpack on? Here's another idea. Run a wire inside your shirt from one cuff across your back and down to the other cuff. Wrap loading coils around each arm just above the elbow. Feed the "dipole" in the center at the back of your neck. I did a quick model (assuming your arms are held straight out) with 5.5 feet total length and 2200 inductive ohms for each coil, with each coil 30% from their respective ends of the wire. It "resonates" at around 14.15 MHz, but with only about 0.4 ohms real feedpoint impedance. I assume it would take some sort of extra matching network to bring that up enough that a KX2 with the internal tuner could drive it. Ignoring the effect of a person's arm, another quick calculation says that the arm coils would need to be roughly 11 turns of 10 gauge wire 3.5 inches in diameter ... unless I made a mistake, which is quite possible. It would bring new meaning to the term "compromise antenna", but I bet it would be more effective than a super small loop the size of backpack frame. 73, Dave AB7E > > > On 1/22/19 12:57 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: >> I’ve engaged in plenty of ultralight HF pack operation, with a KX2, >> AX1 antenna and a dragged counterpoise. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and RPi DRAWS hat?
Jeff and Joe, I am one of the DRAWS hat "early adopters". Yes, it will take some harness wiring but it was easy. The miniDIN6 cable wiring is pin to pin "IKYA standard". All that was needed was adapting the audio I/O wiring and either configuring flrig to key the radio model of choice or use the keying signal available on the miniDIN6 (they are wired to specific RPi GPIO pins). The flip side of the coin is that the implementation of the OS (Compass/Raspbian Stretch) and adapted software (including FT8 and JS8) is still being cobbled together and tested. I have Direwolf/Xastir APRS @1200 baud working reliably on all platforms (IC-7000, FT-817, and E KX3 with 2M card). 9600 baud APRS would be nigh on impossible with the KX3 (discriminator access). Digimodes with fldigi work fine with some tuning. Still working out some details for wsjt-x (but it does work). I am not a JS8 fan so you are on your own there. It is a true "swiss army knife" device - and like a swiss army knife, you can pretty much only use one blade at a time. I mounted the Pi and DRAWS in a SmartiPi Touch frame and adapted the case back with an 12V barrel connector, ON/OFF switch, and access port to the DIN and GPS SMA connector. Here are some photos of my "holiday project": https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4ayvgn1atzaihot/AAC8ElL148w9VjgfkyeODlAUa?dl=0 The keyboard you see is a wireless micro keyboard that came with my first RPi. The whole station using the KX3 or FT-817 fits in a Rigid "briefcase toolbox" or a medium sized Osprey daypack. By the way, the GPS is fast, accurate, and provides a PPS source for the RPi clock which is notoriously bad. Now the Pi tracks the Meinberg provided time on my main workstation here in the office. NW Digital wants to have their consumer ready unit - the OS Image, a custom metal case, and the second run of boards ready this month. It’s a fun project. [Elecraft] Stupidity vs Absentmindedness - Was: Killed the KPA500 :)
Thanks Michael, Andy, and all for the original thread. It made me focus on proper use of my KPA500 which has really done a great job for me since I acquired it and a KAT500 over the summer. Retitled this message because I do not want to hijack/derail the original conversation. What I want to know... is there no repair for absent minded button pushing and thoughtless antenna positioning? So that I don't forget again... A hopefully instructional "mea culpa" follows: I have been using the IC-7000 for 2M APRS ops with a Diamond VX2000 vertical. Also have been experimenting with HF simplex D-Star and Free DV digital voice recently. The KPA500 has been instrumental for DV ops because of recent squirrely propagation... Mistake 1: Over the summer, I forgot to shut down the packet ops and ground 6/2/440 tri-band antenna while using a "nearby" halo with 350 watts 6M DV. That blew the 2M front end of the IC-7000. Matt at SARTS/ICOM in Michigan repaired it and I put together a protection relay circuit to ground the vertical if I forgot again. That should have solved the issue... Mistake 2: A relay contact was faulty (and I did not test it properly) and a month later, an adventure on 6M DV mode took the 7000 front end again! Matt was kind about fixing it ...again... Here I claim total stupidity along with absent mindedness - I rebuilt the protection circuit, tested it, it "seemed" to work fine... but it failed again a month later! Mistake 3: Failed, because I had removed the dummy load and *forgotten* to replace it along with a key ground strap, which again left the receiver 2M front end exposed. Kindly, Matt agreed to fix the 7000 a 3rd time... The 7000 will not go back into service until I have completely re-arranged the station set up because, to top off this comedy of errors... I totally ignored one basic issue: Original Mistake: the vertical and halo antennas were mounted on the same mast because "I never planned" to use them at the same time. This is where stupidity/laziness compounded with my absent minded operating practices to create the "perfect storm". Until I started using the KPA500, the halo antenna field strength was not such that the 7000's 2M receiver section was stressed by the signal strength from vertical, so I got complacent. Add in the KPA500 and smoke is let out of Q551 in the IC-7000. I am *sure* that no one on this group does this sort of sloppy engineering, but let it serve as a not-so-subtle reminder that a station layout should not be organically grown, but should be planned carefully with this sort of damaging interaction in mind. Enjoy the laugh at my expense. [Elecraft] KAT-500 interface cable question
Clint, I looked at that as a possibility, did a cursory look at an MFJ auto-tuner schematic, then decided that it was too easy to make one with spare parts and heat shrink. I would hate to spend $20 plus shipping - only to have to cut off the heat shrink on the MFJ cable, disassemble, do surgery to replace the Molex, and put on new heat shrink if I chose poorly. Using the home brew cable, my 7300 and 7100 both work well with the KAT500 which I use with a KPA500. Next projects will be to make a patching switch to pop between the two for when I do simplex DV on HF. I have not tried to use my KX3 with the KPA/KAT500 combo, but assume it would be easy.
