Re: [Elecraft] K3 DVR comes and goes?

2021-07-24 Thread Rich
Let us know what you find.   I have a K3S which was sent back to have
the DVR firmware updated, not the update we can do, but the one that
needs done at the repair center which now shows "dr 02.05".  Even after
the repair many times my DVR will not work at all or locks in
transmit.   If I check the FW REVS in CONFIG it will show "dr 00.01" or
a variety of other numbers, but not "dr 02.05".   If I cycle the power
on the radio a time or two it will again show "dr 02.05" and starts
working again.

You might want to check what you FW version is when the DVR is not working.

2019-04-30 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
I use AUDACITY which is a free software, record my own messages, set it
to  play a loop and let it feed the radio.  It can be used for most all
modes, SSB and CW. I have several pre-recorded messages which I can
easily choose.   All that is needed is the free software, and a single
USB cable between the computer and my K3S. Set the input to MIC + LIN
and turn on the VOX.  A few level tweaks and one is off and running.

Did you build your K3?

If so, it’s no big deal. You do have to remove the from panel but it’s easy and
trust me. The first time you installed the panel it was tricky. But after that
it’s not hard at all.

FYI: I bought a 10 Watt/ no ATU kit in August or 2009. I went into the thing
every weekend till I had all the additions installed. Thought several times
about putting a zipper on the top cover! Don’t fret the
disassembly/reassembly.

I press my footswitch briefly when I want to stop playing a "M"

don't use VOX with voice modes. Too many people come into my

The recorder works just right 98% of the time. Randomly, it hangs up in the
middle of a recorded message. It just stops. No audio, no RF, but the K3
remains in transmit mode. Sometimes tapping the same M button again
restarts the message from the beginning and all is well. Sometimes, nothing
has any effect - nothing will get the rig out of transmit other than a power
down. And then all is well again for a while. This happens on more than
one of the memory buttons, and it happens whether I tap the M button or the
corresponding programmed button on the K-Pod. It is infrequent,
intermittent, and of course happens at the worst times. On one and only one
power-down I saw ERR-DVR. Re-recording messages doesn't fix it. The K3

[Elecraft] K3 DVR issue

2019-01-19 Thread Dauer, Edward
Today during the NAQP I experienced occasional strange behavior with a new KDVR
in an updated K3 . . . wondering if this has happened to anyone else. The
recorder works just right 98% of the time. Randomly, it hangs up in the middle
of a recorded message. It just stops. No audio, no RF, but the K3 remains in
transmit mode. Sometimes tapping the same M button again restarts the message
from the beginning and all is well. Sometimes, nothing has any effect - nothing
will get the rig out of transmit other than a power down. And then all is well
again for a while. This happens on more than one of the memory buttons, and it
happens whether I tap the M button or the corresponding programmed button on
the K-Pod. It is infrequent, intermittent, and of course happens at the worst
times. On one and only one power-down I saw ERR-DVR. Re-recording messages
doesn't fix it. The K3 has F/W revision 5.64, which may be one revision
behind. Anyone else experienced this or have an i
dea what the problem is? Tnx for any advice . . .

No, I use F2:%GK10 F3:%GK11 F4:%GK12 F5:%GK13 and define these GK commands
in the writelog.ini. It works very well. N6EE wrote an excellent article
on setting it up with Writelog.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DVR

2016-06-14 Thread Richard Ferch
The command syntax you used ({CAT1ASC K3_command} is unique to N1MM+. If
you want to use those SWT commands with a different program, you will have
to use the macro syntax appropriate for that program.

The command syntax in Writelog appears to be a bit more complicated - it
looks as if you first have to define key macros in the Writelog.ini file
and then call up those key macros in the function key definitions using the
%G command. See for examples of
how to do this.

[Elecraft] [K3] DVR repeat operation

2015-10-07 Thread Bill Frantz
I was using a K3 DVR in the California QSO party last weekend,
where it provided its usual great performance. I had one issue
that might be a simple firmware change.

When running a DVR memory in auto repeat mode, for CQing, if the
VFO B display is set up to show internal parameters, like supply
voltage, it quickly flashes "REPEAT" briefly at the start of
each repeat of the message. When displaying the VFO B frequency,
it shows "REPEAT" continuously, making it harder to tune the
subreceiver. If it just flashed briefly, it would make tuning easier.

FWIW, we had 2 K3s and a KX3 in operation at 100 watts. There
was very little interference at first, but when the batteries
got low, the interference became intolerable. Swapping the
batteries for fully charged ones corrected the problem.

[Elecraft] [K3] DVR feature request for next firmware release

2014-04-10 Thread Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W
Hi guys,
during contests I often use the K3 DVR in the auto-repeat mode.
I'd like to suggest an improvement, i.e. the possibility to adjust the
delay not in seconds but in tenths of a second.
That would allow a more precise repeat timer... sometimes you need to set
for example 2.5 seconds of delay, because 2 could be too fast and 3 too
slow.

Just my 2 cents for the next firmware release of a great radio!

Thanks,
Ciao 73

[Elecraft] K3 DVR, Speakers, and feedback

2013-06-21 Thread Oscar Staudt
I always use a headset with my K3 at home. I have the Mon level at 1 or 2
so I can hear the DVR output.

As I'm preparing for Field day, I remembered last year we tried to use the
DVR while running external powered speakers on the K3. Unless the Mon
level was turned down to 0, we would get audio feedback (squeal) when
keying the DVR for a CQ. Of course, with the Mon level set to 0, then we
can't hear what the DVR is transmitting. I believe we were using the
standard hand mic when this occurred.

It seems like the mic must have been active when pressing a memory button
for the DVR message to play. Am I missing something? Should the mic not
be active when playing a DVR CQ?

thanks,

Oscar, WB5GCX

[Elecraft] K3 DVR firmware

What is the latest version of firmware for the K3's DVR? Mine shows v. 01.04

A couple of weeks ago on an 80m EU dx net that I regularly participate in I
recorded about 10 seconds of audio from a ZL who the net was working just
to give him an idea of how well his nice clean signal was being received
here in the UK. He was happy with the playback and a number of UK
participants in the net said without being asked that they could hardly
distinguish between the recording and the real thing. It's not the first

If you mean using the k3 dvr to record someone and play it back to them,
that's a old problem Elecraft said they would address a year or so
ago!!!

There needs to be a way to adjust the level and there is not at present.

Re: [Elecraft] . K3 dvr playback distortion

2012-02-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Geoff and all,

Currently, there is no way to bypass the equalization for the DVR.
When you record someone's off-the-air signal, it passes through your RX
EQ settings, and then when you play it back, it goes through your TX EQ
settings - so the audio gets hit with the double whammy of both RX EQ
and TX EQ in a situation where you do not want any equalization at all.

If your EQ settings are all flat, then you can obtain and playback
something that represents what you heard, but if you have either the RX
or TX EQ settings adjusted for your ears, speaker, headphones,
microphone, etc. Then the individual whom you recorded will not be able
to hear an honest assessment of how he sounded when you play it back
over the air.

So yes, any fix will not be applied to the DVR, rather what is needed
is the ability to turn off EQ when recording or transmitting previously
recorded audio. One would normally want to have the audio pass through
TX EQ if it was recorded locally, but playback of recordings made off
the air is different and needs EQ turned off.

Re: [Elecraft] . K3 dvr playback distortion

2012-02-23 Thread Geoffrey Downs
Of course you're right Don. More than three years ago I was amongst the
first to install a KDVR3 and Lyle too explained the signal paths clearly at
the time. I'm simply reporting my experience to try to put things into
perspective: when I record a station over the air and play it back over the
air, it usually provokes comments from listeners about how well the DVR
reproduces the original. This is despite my RX and TX EQ settings (the
former minimal, the latter not). Naturally it isn't *exactly* the same as
the original but somehow listeners seem to think it gets very near.
Certainly no-one has ever reported to me distortion that was not on the
original. I know of no other rig on the market that does it better - in fact
most cannot do it all.

A couple questions emerge from this:(1)Is there a way to bypass the
compression (mine is set at 10) and equalization with current setup during
DVR playback until a firmware change is made on this issue? (2)Could I have
a correctable situation that a currently available adjustment might improve

Hi,

I have heard ON4UN on a number of occations fairly recently and found that
his audio *is* relatively bad. I suspect that he has an RF feedback problem.
Can anybody else confirm this? I have been very surprised that nobody has
mentioned this to him on the air, so I have held my tongue on the issue so
far.

Anyway, in my opinion it's not fair to play back recordings of people's
audio over the air. It's much better to record his audio with something that
can be captured to a file and send that file to him. Audio deterioriates
very rapidly from multiple passes through SSB receivers/transmitters. I have
heard many times people proudly playing back recordings and they sound
nothing like the original.

[Elecraft] K3 DVR playback level adjustment necessary or possible?

2012-01-08 Thread Robert Sands
I notice the ALC is maxed when playing back the DVR. Can the playback level
be adjusted? I get no complaints but it seems overdriven because the ALC
is so far to the right. Perhaps the ALC can handle any level and no
adjustment is necessary.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DVR AF Play over air...

2011-09-23 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Michael,
When I got my DVR I cogitated on how it all work and wrote up an
explanation that helped me understand it. I put it in the KE7X K3 book
and also put it up on

Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me how you can playback the K3's DVR AF Play file over

Also when using AF REC and recording a short received clip of audio and
then going to play it back there is a large empty spot (after playing
it) and it eventually plays a previous audio clip following the one
that was just recorded. Is this the way it's supposed to work?

[Elecraft] K3 DVR anomaly

2011-09-19 Thread Rich - K1HTV
K3 DVR anomaly

I use the M1-M4 CW DVR voice memories in my K3 to store various messages. I'm
using software versions MCU 4.39 / DSP 2.73 . On CW, pressing the same or
different memory button while a message is playing will result in the two
messages being chained, as they should be. However, when the same is tried with
the voice memories this does not occur. Instead of the audio in the two memories
playing sequentially, only the first memory is played. This is followed by a
period of silence before the K3 switches from transmit back into the receive
mode.

The amount of silence depends on the length of the recording in the memory of
the 2nd button that is pressed. I recorded a 2 second voice message in M1 and a
6 second message in M2. During the playback of the M1 message I pressed the M2
button. After the M1 message ended, there was 6 seconds of silence before the K3
went from transmit back into the receive mode. Again, the amount of silence
depends on the length of the message in the second button that is pressed.

I believe that this is a bug and not a feature :-). Are others experiencing the
same anomaly? If at all possible, please modify the K3 DVR software so it
allows the chaining of voice messages in the same manner as CW messages.
Thanks.

Rich - K1HTV

[Elecraft] K3 DVR audio routing

2011-08-14 Thread Ed Picha
hi folks:

I am in the habit of recording receive audio with the DVR and for
notable QSOs I like to save the recorded audio to a WAV file on the
computer. I move the cable going to the computer LINE IN to the K3
SPKR port and then move it back when I am done recording the WAV file.
It works, but it is clumsy.I can't come up with a way to route the
DVR playback audio to the LINE OUT port on demand, has anyone done this
before?

Thanks, 73

[Elecraft] [k3] dvr playback question

2011-08-14 Thread Mike Rodgers
I thought the question was in regard to recording another ham on the air and
playing it back to him over the air?

It was said the alc was sky high thus the playback not being a accurate
representation with no way to adjust except rf gain trial and error.

I have not used my dvr for that but find it hard to believe that it's not come
up before? And Lyle thanking the gentleman for bringing it to his attention.
Surely there's got to be operators doing this successfully. No?

Of course I could have totally misunderstood the question.

I have sent on air recorded audio of a station

I'm also curious where the K3 determines the level

perhaps it has something to do with the level of the audio
being heard over the speakers/phones by the operator
when the recording is made??

Re: [Elecraft] [k3] dvr playback question

2011-08-14 Thread Gary Gregory
It is absolutely pointless to play recorded audio back to the station IF you
are trying to show him how good or bad his/her audio is.

The amount of change in the signal quality between RX and Tx in your own
transceiver is more than enough to alter the sent audio.

Even going to the effort of centering your TxEQ and RxEQ will not enable you
to transmit a true representation of the transmitted audio from the 'other'
station.

It can of course let the sending station know how strong his signal at your
station?

I have heard quite a few stations use various radios and gadgets to play
on-air recorded audio and I have yet to hear one that was a good
representation of the original audio. Again, it is all the perception of the
individual...:-)

[Elecraft] K3 DVR question

2011-07-03 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan
I am using the K3 DVR to record the received audio and play it back to the OM
on the other side
to give him an impression of his audio. Usually third party listeners told me
that the recorded
audio sounded nearly equal to the original, but last week I recorded a ham
friend very close to
me and the replay sounded a little distorted when I retransmitted it. It
sounded very good in my
monitor though. I have seen that the ALC meter was quite high when I replayed
the recorded
audio, and it could not be influenced by my mic gain and comp setting.
Is this normal and intended?

[Elecraft] Elecraft] K3 DVR Audio

2011-02-20 Thread Roy Davis
Hello,

I don't know if this subject has been briught up, if it has please excuse my
not seeing it.

The DVR for my K3 put in place today has an anomoly. It makes recordings
for on the air transmissions fine. But it seems to have what sounds like a
popping or staticy presence to the audio. The quality of the audio itself
is great.

The problem exists whether the K3 is in transmit or test mode.

Has anyone had the same experience and a fix.

I plan to take the K3 to Costa Rica at TI5N , for the SSB Contest, and would
like to clear up the problem before leaving.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] K3 DVR Audio

2011-02-20 Thread Bill Conkling
My experience is that the DVR has almost perfect reproduction of the audio.
I have not noticed any unusual sounds, nothing that was not in the original
input.

Note, if you are going to record you CQ and/or EXCHANGE, turn OFF or
ZERO out any TX EQ before recording. The TX will add the TX EQ when you
transmit. If you record with TX EQ, it will EQ it again when you transmit.
The K3/DVR combination can provide excellent audio recording such that the
guy on the other end will not know you are not Live. Unlike so many
operators on contests that have entirely different sound quality on
playback.

[Elecraft] K3 - DVR equalization

2010-09-29 Thread nr4c
K3'ers...

When I record messages with the DVR, does the recording use the
TX EQUALIZATION settings, or are these only used when the signal is
actually transmitted?

I have two mics on my radio, and was trying to see how they sounded on
playback.

I setup the rear mic, and made two recordings. I listened and they
sounded good.

Now I reconfigured for the front mic, and began trying to get them to
sound the same. As I was adjusting the TX EQ on the front mic, and
comparing the sound with the recorded rear mic, it seemed that the
recordings were being distorted. I felt that the recordings contained
some TX EQ AND I was hearing it compounded by the current TX EQ for
the front mic.

Does this make any sense.

YES but with a very limited audio response, those chips are designed just 300 to
2500Hz so when you record some one with a wider range and play him back he will
feel badthinking he sounds like that so narrow and high pitch, those recorders
should not be used to report some one unless the guy had a limited audio as
well, they are better for record your own voice and use it on contests.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DVR playback over the air?

2010-02-25 Thread Lyle Johnson

 YES but...

The K3 DVR module hooks directly to the DSP in the digital signal path.

Its audio bandwidth is from near DC to almost 6 kHz. The bandwidth it
records is limited by the various filters (roofing and DSP control
settings) in the receive path, and what it sends is again limited by the
various filters in the transmit path.

 No other way at present.

One of the items on the infamous list is to provide a means of
adjusting DVR Tx audio independent of the current MON setting.

[Elecraft] K3 - DVR control

2009-11-23 Thread Fred Jensen
I did the SSB Sweepstakes this last weekend with my new K3 DVR and N1MM.
I only recorded 4 messages [CQ, Exchange, Thanks QRZ, and my call],
and had N1MM send the SWTxx commands to play them. Other than the fact
that I occasionally hit Enter without first stepping on the footswitch
and giving his call and number, it worked flawlessly. Thanks Wayne!

[Elecraft] K3 DVR message play termination via the RX remote-control command

2009-11-19 Thread Wayne Burdick
Those of you who control the K3's digital voice recorder (KDVR3) from
a PC application can now terminate message play/repeat more easily.
The K3's RX remote-control command will now cleanly cancel transmit
or message play in all modes.

If you'd like to try this, please email me directly. I'll send you K3
field-test firmware revision 3.60.

Other DVR-related changes are still in the works, but I know many of
you had requested this one.

[Elecraft] K3 DVR/PTT behavior improved -- looking for pre-contest volunteers to try it

2009-11-19 Thread Wayne Burdick
We've greatly improved the way PTT works with the K3's digital voice
recorder. The latest field-test release, MCU rev. 3.62, behaves as
described below.

If you'd like to test this for us (quickly, so we can do another beta
release tomorrow), please email me directly.

tnx
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 3.62, 11-19-2009

* PTT USE WITH DVR: If the KDVR3 menu entry ‘1’ tap option
is set to AUTOPTT (the default), then PTT now behaves as follows:

   - If you start DVR message play first (by tapping M1-M4), then
assert PTT during the message, DVR play will be cancelled.

   - If you assert PTT first, then play a DVR message, it will
play normally, and will complete even if you let go of PTT.

You can also cancel DVR message play by tapping REC, as usual,
whether PTT is asserted or not. (Or cancel from a computer
using the “RX;” command – see below.)

Note: If the KDVR3 menu entry ‘1’ tap option is set to
USE PTT, then PTT is required as a qualifier for DVR
message play. In this case, releasing PTT in the middle
of a DVR message will cancel it.

Remote Control Command Changes:

* DVR MSG PLAY CANCEL: You can now use the “RX”
command to cleanly cancel DVR message play (as well
as any other transmit or message-play function, in any mode).

* CONFIG:DIGOUT1 MENU PARAMETER is now accessible
with the “MP command. Values 000 and 001 only; get/set.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DVR in SS

2009-11-16 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I would guess what you're really asking for is for is for the DVR to
play a message if it's invoked when PTT is active and to keep the PTT
active even if you then drop it, but to terminate if it's active and
then PTT is pressed?

That way, it can call CQ, you can terminate it and fill in the gaps
with a PTT and then complete the exchange by invoking DVR again and
have it go on to call CQ again.

That's what I would want too.

[Elecraft] K3 DVR in SS

2009-11-15 Thread Ronald Lodewyck
How the heck do I use the K3 DVR in SS? Sounds easy enough - program the
exchange
Uniform N6EE 55 Sugar Japan Victor
in one of the Mx buttons.
OK, fine. But now I answer a come back to my CQ by stepping on the footswitch
and saying
W3XX Number 123
then press the Mx button to complete the exchange. No message playback.

Why? Because the K3 terminates the message if the PTT, VOX, or key paddle are
activated.

The problem is that I essentially have to drop the PTT, then hit the Mx button
- causing a noticeable break in transmission , but even more important, making
the coordination of the footswitch and pressing the Mx button critical. I find
this unacceptable since I have been known to lose any sense of coordination
after hours of contesting (sound familiar?).

I have programmed my computer sound card with voice messages in Writelog and it
works OK, but I prefer the smooth sound and undetectable difference between the
K3 DVR and live mike input. Besides, I paid for the K3 DVR so it could use it
in contests.

Is there any way around this feature of the K3 DVR? I.e., can I tell the K3
to NOT terminate the DVR message when the PTT, Vox, or keyer are activated?

[Elecraft] K3: DVR open ground problem

2009-09-25 Thread Matt Zilmer
K3 #24 was upgraded to include the DVR earlier this year. It worked
fine while testing just after installation and configuring.

I used the DVR a few times for contesting, but not much recently. I
noticed recently that any recording I make has the hum of an open mic
(ground or shield?) superimposed on the voice signal. Seems like
there might be a bad connection, but looking at the schematic this
makes no sense - to have this problem with the DVR only. The audio
straight from the mic should have this problem as well. The mic
audio is fine though.

Anyone have experience with a problem like this? I will do the usual
- uninstalling, re-installing (reseating the connector), but since the
mic signal at the connector is digital I don't think this will help.

All ideas appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 -- DVR question

2009-06-19 Thread Joel R. Hallas
I recently added a digital voice module to my K3. It does everything it is
advertised to do, and does it very well.

One question occurs to me. The off the air recording feature is a real plus
and will be handy. Is there any way to extract a useful digital copy of the
recorded audio in a way that would be downloadable to the connected PC and
then stored in an easily recoverable way?

I know the audio could be resampled and stored using a sound card and PC
software, but that would add another A/D conversion. It would be nice to be
able to send someone the original data as a PC file of the way they sound,
rather than sending it over the air.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 -- DVR question

2009-06-19 Thread Lyle Johnson
Hello Joel!

I am not hopeful this can be done on a practical basis. The logic would
be pretty convoluted. We'd have to snatch a small sample from the DVR
Flash, then buffer it in the DSP, then push it out the serial port to a
PC, which would need an application written to slurp up the RS232 data.
After many iterations we could get the data across. The PC would then
need a program to convert the data into some sort of recognizable, raw
samples. I suspect a .WAV file is the most likely wrapper that could
then be put around it.

Thus, it requires MCU code for the K3, plus DSP code, plus a PC program.

I know the audio could be resampled and stored using a sound card and PC
software, but that would add another A/D conversion. It would be nice to be
able to send someone the original data as a PC file of the way they sound,
rather than sending it over the air.

I suspect resampling would add very little noise compared to the radio
link. I suspect this is the best bet, again on a practical basis.

Sorry I can't be more positive :-(

[Elecraft] K3 DVR memories

2009-05-24 Thread Jay Rodaman
I am able to access the bank 1 memories through N1MM and

figured how to access the Bank 2 memories also with N1MM.

however when I access the Bank 2 memories (N1MM F5-F8)

the F1 key then uses the Bank 2 K3 memories. That might not be clear

but what I want to end up with is N1MM F keys 1-8 accessing the K3

memory banks.

Anyone successful with this?

[Elecraft] K3 DVR not recording

2008-12-12 Thread John Buck

K3 #125 with KRX3 FW: uC 2.73, d1 1.98, d2 1.98, Fl 00.02, dr 00.05

Installed new DVR, Set Config:KDVR3 nor, cycled power several times.
Using the information published in the MCU 2.72 release notes.

The K3 is in USB mode

When I tap REC then tap M1 (or M2 or m3 or m4), the system goes through
the motions of recording and count down apparently correctly. I also
hear my voice in the monitor. I tap M1 to stop recording. All looks
correct so far.

Now when I tap M1 to play the message I see a momentary blip on the red
TX light but no message playback.

If I hold the M1 the repeat message shows up and every few seconds I see
the TX blip as the repeat function seems to work.

I get the same result with the VOX on or off, TX test mode on or off.

Testing the logic using AF REC also seems to go through the motions of
recording but when I press AF PLAY the display immediately says END.

So it all works but no play back, possibly no recording.
The buttons seem to work OK and the CW record and playback work just fine.

Any suggestions as to what I might be missing?

Aloha,
John KH7T
