Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Spur/Birdie on CW Receive

2024-06-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
OK - mystery solved! I had posted this on the Elecraft reflector and shortly
thereafter realized it should have gone on the KX groups.io
list. So, I put it there and THAT is where my answer came from. Now, why it
took almost a week to get into the Elecraft reflector is another question. But
anyway, my problem was fixed AND now I know why I’m seeing double! Sorry for
all the confusion, folks.

BTW - the “birdie” thingy was resolved by the Tech Mode entry RX ISO - turning
it ON got rid of the “birdie”. Thanks to JPE1HZG for clueing me in to that one.

Wow - this is strange! I posted this last week and got an answer fairly quickly
- it was a setting in the tech mode menu that resolved it. Thought it was all
done. Then this morning around 08:30 local time I got a couple messages that my
post had been accepted from the reflector, and it all started over again!

Anyway, the “problem” is resolved on my end and now it looks like something
funky is going on with the reflector.

The config includes the calibration data, so ALWAYS save the config.

Some normal steps before more detailed troubleshooting.

1. Check the power supply voltage while transmitting, the KX3 can display that.
2. Open up the KX3 and reseat the ribbon connectors.
3. Check that all external cables are really, fully seated.
4. After saving a config, EEINIT, then reload config.
5. Update the firmware.

[Elecraft] KX3 does not signal KPA100 to deliver power

2024-05-19 Thread Karl W Hubbard via Elecraft
Yet another bug with the KX3 not activating the KPA100 to TX tonight.
I have two complete sets of KX3-PX3-KPA100, one for regular use and the other
stored away.
Tonight I noticed I was unable to transmit on JS8Call after celebrating that
finally, after swapping out the SignaLink sound card which will not work with
the Realtek sound  card file now on Windows 11 (The SignaLink had worked when
Microsoft was providing the Audio Codec files on the computer but somehow
Microsft has now removed them during an update? )The Play!3 Sound Blaster SBX
swap out fixed that problem.
So I logged onto JS8Call tonight but this time I noticed that while I could
receive, when I tried to transmit, the KPA100 power output meter would not
light past the first square, and I received zero Heart Beat reponses, meaning I
was not transmitting.  I swapped out my other Elecraft KX3 and it worked. So
the problem is not the KPA100.  I notice now that on attempted TX during
JS8Call, the TX red light on the KX3 was doing a high frequencey faint flicker,
but stays on solid red when trying to transmit with the MH3, but still no power
registers on the KPA100 meter with SSB.  My other KX3 did not display this
flicker.
I have looked through the manuals and have Fred Caddy's book which addresses
the issue of no power out on the KPA100 on page 133 but none of these apply. Of
course I have the ppt, PA in the "on," position.
Before I tear more of my hair out, is there anything obvious I am missing short
of recalibrating or reinstalling firmware (I have no settings to really justify
even making a back up)?

[Elecraft] KX3 / digipi

2024-04-15 Thread C.A. Jones
I stumbled across some interesting software which runs on a Raspberry Pi
and provides a variety of digital mode capabilities to a connected radio.
The s/w is 'digipi', as detailed on 'craiger.org'. I had a RPi Zero 2W
laying around unused and have installed the s/w.

I'm seeking feedback as to whether anyone out there has been successful in
interfacing a KX3 to a RPi running this s/w, and if so, any insights into
connections, configurations, etc., required to make it work. My initial
effort has been KXUSB plugged into the KX3's ACC1 and the RPi's USB
connector.

Thx for any insight.

[Elecraft] KX3 no speaker audio

2024-02-03 Thread Barry Keith Middleton via Elecraft
John, I had the same problem, the KX3 has separate audio amplifiers for
speaker

and phones. With the help of Elecraft support the fault was traced to an

feeding power to the audio i/c. I do not have the details to hand, but
it is a 2 watt device.

Hope you soon get it fixed.

No settings that I can find in the KX3 manual. Are you sure nothing is
plugged into the PHONES jack? From the manual: "Plugging in headphones
disables the speaker and its amplifier."

Can you hear audio if you plug in your headset?

Maybe you can open up the KX3 and check to be sure the jack's contacts
are making contact when the headset is unplugged.

[Elecraft] SOLD> Elecraft KX3-2M Transverter Board Option.

2023-12-23 Thread ken057581
Sold. Thanks all! Happy Holidays...
Ken

Hello all,
I have the KX3-2M Transverter option board for sale. It's about four years old.
I don't need the board for 2m FM and putting up a large outdoor beam for SSB at
this HOA location isn't possible.
During testing, it receives and transmits fine on my attic vertical into local
repeaters.
Removed it from the KX3 while following the manual and ESD procedures.
A hard copy of the installation/operating manual is included.
Photos available.
I think Elecraft is up to $300.00 for this board!
No returns or refunds for all the standard reasons.

$185.00 shipped to CONUS only.
Shipping prices are just out of site now!
PayPal, friends/family, Zelle, Postal Money order or a cleared personal check
are all ok.
Thanks for looking,
Ken, W2GIW

Hello all,
I have the KX3-2M Transverter option board for sale.

PayPal, friends/family, Zelle, Postal Money order or a cleared personal check
are all ok.
Thanks for looking,
Ken, W2GIW

[Elecraft] KX3 2M amp

2023-12-04 Thread Bob McGraw
I use an external VHF amp with my transverter.  Works great!   Do be
mindful of the amp switching time. The relay switching time is about 15
ms.   I prefer to use hardwire PTT as opposed to using RF detection to
switch the amp.

[Elecraft] KX3 Auto Notch not working on SSB

When in CW mode and long press NOTCH i get into manual notch mode (normal)

Wondering why in SSB I get N/A with a long press of NOTCH ??

ALC shows only in TX mode. For digital modes, the manual says to set
audio drive from the computer to the rig so that ALC reads 4 bars
flashing 5 when transmitting. Digital modes should use the LINE Input.
The correct audio drive setting is a combination of computer output gain
and Line Input gain. When in Digital modes, the Mic Gain knob becomes
Line Input gain. In general, computer output should set at least 6 dB
below 100%.

[Elecraft] KX3 - CWT, no ALC in Data Mode

2023-10-28 Thread John Overbaugh
Messing around with PSK today and I'm stumped... I am sure I just switched
a setting somewhere but I can't figure out where. When I am in DATA A mode
for PSK, I see the CWT meter, not the ALC meter. When I press the Keyer/Mic
knob, it *should* change, but it doesn't. When I rotate the knob, it
changes the keyer speed. I can't get the ALC meter to come up at all during
XMIT mode.

Is there a config setting somewhere that controls this or is this possibly
an indication the knob needs repair?

Please check if your KX3 radio actually has the KXBC3 charger module
installed and if the module is installed correctly.

The KX3 software spooks if it tries to communicate to the KXBC3 module
and the module is missing. Instead of an error message, the software
actually locks up and when it happened to me, I resorted to
initialisation (thankfully I had a recent backup of the config).

I'd be interested to learn if there a different way to recover this. And
perhaps the software should more robust: configuring the radio whether
or not has the option installed, and setting a charge time, is the same
option setting.

The issue has been reported to Elecraft:
https://github.com/drewarnett/kx3-firmware-issues/issues

(Mind you, I love my Elecrafts to bits but I wish Elecraft engineering
would have time to address the issues listed)

I just installed the latest version of the KX3 Utility from Elecraft.
The only glitch was when Windows Defender tried to protect me from bad

[Elecraft] KX3 Controlled Envelope SSB

2023-03-21 Thread Scott Zastoupil via Elecraft
So I have to ask since I have not seen any activity since 2016.  Is it possible
to have Elecraft provide a KX3 software update to implement CESSB to the KX3?
It would be nice to have the extra ~3dB to the rig for POTA activations.  I
would imagine it would be a nice bullet to add to the marketing page.  I have
had my rig since a few months after the rig was released and enjoy using it.
It has mostly been used on CW.  But venturing into POTA, it would be nice to
have everything I can get into once package for SSB contacts and less need for
an amp.
So, Elecraft, if you're listening, here is a request for implementing the
featurePlease!  :)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and SWR

2023-03-19 Thread David Woolley
It's not actually SWR that kills PAs, but rather the resulting
over-voltage or over-current. With an open circuit load, the risk would
be mainly over-voltage, but whilst that would be a problem with a class
C PA, I'm not so sure that there is a big risk from class AB, push-pull,
ones.

A PA might survive a very high SWR for some loads, but be very fussy for
other ones.

[Elecraft] KX3 RFI

2023-03-19 Thread John Pierce via Elecraft
I am trying to use a dynamic mic on a KX3 and have RFI on my output. I am
using the KX3 as a driver to a KM3KM amplifier looking to get about 400 to
500 watts output. I have a small pre-amp between the mike and the KX3. I
have modified the pre-amp to ground the lines from and two the pre-amp at
the XLR input/outputs. What frustrates me the most is that I do not have an
oscilloscope to diagnose the problem. I have tried using toroid on all
lines, including power lines without any success.

Is it possible to accomplish what I am trying to do?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and SWR

2023-03-16 Thread Ingo Meyer DK3RED

Hello Paul,

The tuner in my KX3 used to give me a nice 1:1 SWR at
7.05 MHZ.  Now the best match it will give there is about 1.6:1.  In the "old days" we
were happy with anything under 2:1 but can new rigs like my KX3 tolerate this poorer
match?  I only run 5-watts CW.

The KX3 should tolerate an SWR of 1.6:1. I have already unintentionally transmitted with
my KX3 (5W CW) without antenna and the KX3 is still in good health. The manual says at
page 6: "The KX3 reduces power if SWR is high."

[Elecraft] KX3 and SWR

2023-03-16 Thread Paul Huff
My HyGain AV-640 vertical antenna was damaged in a recent winter storm
and will need to come down for repairs once the good weather is here to
stay and I can get around to it.  In the mean time I would still like to
use it.  The only band that really shows a significant problem is
40-meters.  The tuner in my KX3 used to give me a nice 1:1 SWR at 7.05
MHZ.  Now the best match it will give there is about 1.6:1.  In the "old
days" we were happy with anything under 2:1 but can new rigs like my KX3
tolerate this poorer match?  I only run 5-watts CW.  Let me say "thank
you" in advance for any advice anyone might have.

[Elecraft] KX3 For Sale

2023-03-14 Thread Joel Black
I have a loaded KX3 for sale. I have found a KX2 (which is what I originally
wanted) and am selling the KX3.

I am the third owner of this radio and it has come from all non-smoking
environments. I have rarely used the radio (only on weekends) and I have never
taken it to the field (neither had the previous owners). It has the following
options:

KX3 S/N: 0890
KXFL3 roofing filter
KXAT3 tuner
KX3-2m module
KXBC3 internal battery charger
MH3 microphone
KXUSBa - USB RS232-to-3.5 mm cable
CWGuys CW paddle
GEMS Products cover
SideKX side panels (if I find the originals, I’ll include them)
SMA-to-BNC connector for the 2 m module.

I have used the radio on CW and JS8.

New from Elecraft, this would cost about $2300 not including shipping, the
protective cover, and side plates. I’m asking $1650 shipped to your door.

NOTE: You will likely want to replace the MH3 mic cord. It is frayed just as it
enters the mic. I have never used it and didn’t notice it until I was getting
it all together. The price I’m asking reflects this (I’m not including the mic
in the price).

I have pictures available upon request.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and KPA1500 compatibility

2023-03-07 Thread w7aqk1
From: Jim Brown mailto:j...@audiosystemsgroup.com> >

I think one of the the half-wave designed verticals Jim is thinking of is
the Cushcraft R8 and/or R9. MFJ now manufactures these antennas, but I have
one of the "original" models, and it worked very well for me -considering it
was something of a compromise. As Jim noted, years ago Ward Silver, N0AX,
and K7LXC, put together a very substantial review of various verticals, and
he gave the R8 (the R9 wasn't born yet) very good maks! That info may seem
somewhat dated, but still has serious relevance! Besides, it isn't just a
review of various antennas, it is an analysis of each antenna's performance!
I'd be using my R8 right now except when we moved from Tucson to Portland
some of the pieces went missing, and I haven't had a chance to resolved the
problem!!!

I also echo Jim's comments about Tom, N6BT, are also very appropriate.
I've seen Tom give marvelous presentations at at Pacificon, Yuma, and most
recently to one of our ham clubs here in Portland via Zoom! Tom has
created some of the most interesting and effective antennas around!

For that matter, I've also seen Jim, K9YC, do presentations at Pacificon,
and they were excellent as well. His website is like another handbook! If
Jim says it is good, it's good!

Cheers,

There are a couple of interesting articles here that discuss the design,
construction and use of filters between transmitter and amplifier designed to
prevent the amplification of the “junk” - unwanted harmonics and phase noise
from the transmitter:

https://kitsandparts.com/W3NQN_filter.php

I've seen several QST reviews recently with lab notes to the effect “not
recommended for use with an amplifier” because of the uncleanliness of the
transmitted signal. This is an issue of increasing concern given some of the
dirty signals we’ve all heard on the air.

2023-03-07 Thread Fred Jensen

In mild dissent to several of the replies ... from very savvy folks ...
one of the truly enlightening things that J. C. Maxwell worked out back
in the 19th century was, "If you can get alternating current to flow in
a non-buried, non-submerged conductor, it will radiate."

Many years ago, in a far away land, while installing and operating a
heavy mobile troposcatter system on a sand dune about 180 m AMSL, we
just laid the dipole for our HF SSB intra-unit net [KWM-2A's] out on the
sand.  It worked fine.  We finally found the masts in our pallets of
gear and strung the dipole up.  There was no appreciable difference in
how it worked.

Today, we're HOA dwellers [by choice], my antenna at home is a 43 m wire
strung on a wooden fence on plastic electric fence insulators.  It is
about 2 m high with a 90 deg "corner,"  and is end-fed through what I
believe is an 8:1 transformer.  It works ... on all HF bands.  It is a
compromise of course, a Sterba curtain would work better, but I make
lots of Q's with it including DX.

I suggest a high likelihood that you aren't managing to get enough
alternating current to flow in any of the antennas you've tried, and
that's where I'd start.

Regarding the question about KX3-->KXPA100-->KPA1500:  Be careful.  All
amplifiers generate some distortion that wasn't present at the input.
Each succeeding amplifier amplifies that distortion.

I suspect, as K9YC noted, that the real issue is with your antenna. You did

counterpoise will work very well but I suspect that the vertical you tried
was something else. A simple center fed 1/2 WL dipole with the center as
high as possible should also get you into the net with your 100 watts amp,

To expand on this -- the BTV-series, the Butternut and a few others use

radials. Length on the ground is not critical, and more is better.

The Hy-Gain AV-series, and another similar design by another designer

and do NOT need radials (and work best without them). I could give you

N0AX/K7LXC review of them is currently out on loan to another ham. My
81-year-old brain can only remember so many details.

N6BT (original Force 12 designer, VERY sharp engineer), designed a lot
of excellent center-fed loaded designs for that company, which he owned,
and brands after he sold Force 12. Tom is a far better designer than
businessman, and I love him dearly. :) His self-published "Array Of
Light" is a GREAT education, and includes many of his designs.
N0AX/K7LXC very disciplined tests of both verticals and tri-banders
showed Tom's designs to be leading both packs! Our 7QP/CQP/FD team owns
three of his C3SS Yagis. Tom is also very sharing of what he has
learned, zero ego, and I've learned a LOT from him. His measurements
(using drones) on the effect of terrain (above a dropoff in the

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and KPA1500 compatibility

2023-03-06 Thread Jim Brown

Hi Karl,

I suspect your problem may be the antennas you've tried, which are not
wonderful for 75/80M. Almost any antenna will receive well if you don't
have a lot of noise, but transmitting a strong signal needs a better
one, and well installed.

How far are you from the nets you're trying to work? How tall was that
vertical? What model? Most (but not all) verticals need radials to
transmit a decent signal. A vertical that needs radials is a lousy TX
antenna without them.

Most end-fed antennas need a counterpoise to transmit well. Did you have
one?

How high were those other antennas? Horizontal antennas work better if
they're high. Do you have skyhooks positioned so that you could rig a
75M dipole (it's roughly 120 ft long)? They're easy to build and should
be fed with coax. There are shortened dipoles with loading coils that
can fit between closer supports.

Have you studied the antenna section of the ARRL Handbook,or the ARRL
Antenna Book?

Most of the antennas you've described probably need a tuner to load
efficiently. The KPA500 does NOT include a tuner, so the KAT500 would
likely be needed. The KPA1500 includes an excellent tuner. 2-3W will
yield 100W on most bands, about twice that for 200-250W. Yes, you can
certainly daisy-chain the two amps to get legal limit with as little as
1W from the KX3.

Kent,

You're technically correct, but for the 67 years I've been a ham, "CW"
has meant Morse code on the ham bands. This has, indeed, led to
misunderstandings about the bandwidth of Morse transmission. A constant
carrier has near zero bandwidth. Morse transmission occupies hundreds of
Hz in a GOOD transmitter.

And Morse operation on the ham bands is 100% amplitude modulation of a
carrier by a train of rectangular waves, which in poorly designed rigs
produces intermodulation distortion in the RF signal chain, sidebands
that are heard as key clicks. In general, the strength of sidebands is
proportional to the speed of the transitions from on to off and off to
on -- the faster the transition, the stronger the clicks. One of the
many virtues of Elecraft rigs beginning with the original K3 is that
these transitions are carefully shaped to minimize clicks while
maximizing readability.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 manual page 14 regardincg "TUNE".

2023-02-06 Thread K9ZTV
Let's get our nomenclature right ...

CW never means Morse Code. It means continuous wave or carrier wave (used
interchangeably).

Morse-type Code occurs only when a continuous wave is turned on and off to
represent letters, numbers, and punctuation according to a given language's
agreed upon chart of correlation.

CW is a mode of transmission. Morse Code is an application using that mode.

Yes; "CONTINUOUS wave."

It's not really an unmodulated "FM" signal; it's an unmodulated carrier.
There's no reason to assign an arbitrary modulation designation -- why
not say it's an unmodulated FSK or PSK signal?

CW = continuous wave, an unmodulated carrier

CW <> Morse code, although many take it to mean that these days. One

Do you have a watt meter between the KX3 and the loop?

[Elecraft] KX3 manual page 14 regardincg "TUNE".

2023-02-06 Thread JEROME SODUS
Hello,

My question is about the "TUNE" selection (half second hold of the XMIT button).

The manual's wording is
"TUNE is used to put out a CW signal at the power level selected by the __ PWR
control.".

Normally, "CW" means morse-code.
But, in this instance, am I correct in thinking it stands for "continuous wave"
or, in other words, an unmodulated FM signal (constant carrier and
amplitude)?

The reason for my email is
I am setting up a Magnetic-Loop-Antenna that has a "remote tuning" capability
and that "remote tuning" set-up is not going very well for me.
If the KX3 is putting out a continuous wave, then there is a serious problem
with the "remote tuning" box.

TIA for any reply.

2023-01-26 Thread John Overbaugh
Big thank you to Hank K4HYJ who mentioned Data A is a little different from
SB when it comes to the XMIT function. I believe I’ve been operating PSK in
USB till now, and just… put it into Data A mode. Changing the Mike PTT to
off fixed it in Data A mode, and it works as usually in USB mode.

I really appreciate this group. I don’t often reach out, but every time I
do, I get the right answer in a matter of hours.

I do have a follow up question. I will start a new thread on that.

[Elecraft] KX3, FLDIGI, SignaLinkUSB - Not Exiting XMIT Mode

2023-01-24 Thread John Overbaugh
I have a KX3, running through the KXPA100, connected via Serial USB to
a Windows 10 machine. I'm using Win4k3 2.0.4.0 and com0com to share
out the COMPort. I have N3FJP's Amateur Contact Log running, as well
as FLDIGI v 4.1.18 in normal mode.

When I run a macro in FLDIGI, the macro engages the XMIT mode, sends
the data via PSK, and disables TX mode, and I can hear a switch flip
in the KX3, but 1) the transmit light is still red and 2) there is no
RX. If I manually press the XMIT button, the light goes off and RX
begins again.

This is a new development which started earlier this morning as my
Elmer was running PSK for VOTA (W1AW/7). No apparent changes were made
to configuration.

I've reviewed the Cady book on PSK settings, and double checked
connections from the KX3, Signalink, and KXPA. No obvious issues.

Has anyone seen this in the past?

[Elecraft] KX3 filters oscillating issue

2023-01-20 Thread Terry Griffey via Elecraft
I have a fully loaded KX3 with the roofing filter. With the AF set to 12, the
RF set to 0 and the monitor level at 19, when I start closing the filter (APF
OFF) it begins to oscillate at bandwidth 1.8k until it gets down to .05k and
stops. This happens on every band. With (APF ON) the oscillation begins at
1.8k but changes timbre as the filter is closed to .05k but never stops. This
has been happening since I got the transceiver back from service a few months
ago. Is this a setting of some kind that got reset during service? Is there
something I need to change? Thanks for your input. 73!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 vs FT-710

2022-12-14 Thread Eric Fitzgerald

Greg,

I think it is unreasonable to compare radios that come with two
completely different price points (not to mention delivery dates).  The
KX3 fully tricked out is like, what, 3x the cost? Don't get me wrong, I
absolutely prefer the fully loaded KX3 in this comparison otherwise.

Dealing with Yaesu after the purchase is a lot different than dealing
with Elecraft, plus the support community here is second to none.
Trying to get help on Yeasu's various reflectors is pretty painful.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 vs FT-710

2022-12-14 Thread Greg Herman
On cyber Monday I picked up an FT – 710 for a great price of $1050. If
this would’ve been my first radio I probably would I fell in love with it,,
but unfortunately for Yaesu it was my third radio. 1=IC703, 2=
KX3/PX3/KXPA100, 3= FT710
The display on the FT 710 is beautiful, but unfortunately I have to put on
reading glasses to use it, whereas my old KX3/PX3 I can use without
reading glasses in my camper. The audio output on the 710 was excellent
for my OM hearing. But to me the background noise on the KX3 seems just a
little smoother, not sure how to describe that? The PX3 panadapter puts
the Yaesu to shame, Yaesu has a lot of work to do on their approach
towards a panadapter Elecraft has the end-user in mine on their panadapter
. The adjustability of frequency input was kind of a pain on the Yaesu.
Very easy to adjust what you want on the KX3 via tapping the rat button.
Antenna tuner?, Well we all know who the winner is there.
And the winner is? The KX3, the Yaesu is on his way back to GigaParts.
PS if you’re looking for a good radio on a budget I would recommend Yaesu,
they do need a lot of firmware updates to make it a better user-friendly
radio

Paul...
Not really much to the radio setup. Your transmitted deviation is very
important on 2 meters and so is the incoming volume level going to your
soundcard. Unless you have an amp or a gateway station really near, that 3
watts may not be enough to make it.

What soundcard are you using?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question on S-Meter Calibration

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
I thought I understood this but appears that I had it wrong.

According to the SMTR calibration procedure, it is set with the PRE on and
ATTN off. Calibration sets a 50uV signal to S9 and a 1uV to S2-S3. See this in
the Calibration Procedures section of the manual (p51 in my 2009 version).

I’ve been using the SMTR ABS mode ever since I discovered it. YMMV

I’m pretty sure the K3 has an S-meter absolute mode that adjusts the S-meter
reading when preamps and/or attenuators are turned on.

The KX3 is supposed to have that mode, but it is not implemented. From the

[Elecraft] Sale....Elecraft "KX3 Kit"With Tuner and Roofing Filter.

2022-08-25 Thread KJ

Hello all,
Have the following for sale..
KX3 Kit, S/N 7662. From about 2015.

Includes:
KXFL3- Dual Passband Roofing Filter Kit.
KXAT3- 20W Auto Antenna Tuner Kit.
KXUSB cable.
A grounded anti static mat and wrist strap should be used to assemble this!

Was intended as a backup for an existing/assembled KX3 but never used. Box was
only opened to take pictures; which I will send on request.
Elecraft price for all is $1,809.85 but, as we know, the KX3 itself is on back
order.

Note: I don't know if things have changed with the new kits but back then
people were driving the screws in to hard while attaching the battery case and
shorting out the main board! Nylon screws would be safer.

I'll pass over my phone number, via email, for any detailed discussions if
requested.

$1,475.00 which includes shipping to CONUS only.
Shipping prices have gone thru the roof!
Postal Money, Bank Cashiers or as a very last resortPayPal! Can discuss
PayPal.
The "QRZ.COM" e-mail address is available for communication.
As usual, no returns or refunds!
Thank you for reading! Please be safe! Ken. W2GIW

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 frequency reporting (was: KX3 and its "TUNE" selection. (With mag loop)

2022-08-25 Thread Geert Jan de Groot

>> the magloop what frequency it's tuned to?

That's absolutely possible over the serial port (ACC1)! The Programmer's
Reference has the details:

You don't need to go as far as sending commands to query the KX3 (or
KX2, or K3, for that matter).
Set MENU:AUTO INF from NOR to ANT CTRL, and every time you change the
frequency dial, change bad, the KX3 will automatically report frequency
and a number of other parameters. Don't need to send commands, reporting
automatically happens. Format of the status report is in the document
quoted.

Suggest your mag loop supports 38400 baud. With KX3, other speeds do
work but as soon as you add other things (PX3, KXPA100) you will find
that some of them enforce 38400 baud so you "might as well".

MENU:AUTO INF set to ANT CTRL also works on KX2 and even on K3 (it's
called MENU:AUTOINF and needs to be set to AUTO 1 on K3 but then works
like the rest).
Personally, I use it to control my Hardrock 500 amplifier and this "just
works".

it with HF mobiles.  Still may be done.

Most of the cost in transmitting loops >QRP is in the vacuum variable
capacitor, the construction to minimize I-squared R losses, and to
withstand the extremely high voltages which, at 100+ watts can range
well above 100 amps circulating current and multi-KV potentials.

I also think that complexity can get in the way of portability. The

Once the mag loop is tuned to the band, you won't have to adjust it
much to

is the
way. Notice too, mag loops are very directional. Consult the
manufacturing

Hi Jerry,

That's absolutely possible over the serial port (ACC1)! The Programmer's

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and its "TUNE" selection. (With mag loop)

2022-08-24 Thread jerry
I'm starting work on a magloop project. I wonder how hard it would be
to
have a transceiver tell the magloop what frequency it's tuned to? That
could
operationally be simpler than having to hit it with low-power RF so it
can tune

itself...

simply "PTT".

Once the mag loop is tuned to the band, you won't have to adjust it
much to
tune it for the particular part of the band you are on. Gentle tweaks
is the
way. Notice too, mag loops are very directional. Consult the
manufacturing
manual for where it's sensitive and turn it along a great circle to
where
you want to go. (In Boston, where I live, Europe is north east by
great

circle.

I note there is something about tuning the radio in some mag loop
instructions. I find this not necessary with the KX3. What I describe

I have contacted Europe USB with a KX3 at 15 watts and a mag loop. The
antenna was on the top floor of my wood frame town house for this, not
even
outdoors. If you think about what I wrote, you want the antenna in
arm's
length while working the radio. Don't worry about your body affecting

[Elecraft] KX3 and its "TUNE" selection. (With mag loop)

2022-08-23 Thread Geoffrey Feldman
If your antenna is a magloop - DO NOT USE the tune button. In fact, clear
the tuner memory for your band per instructions. The tuner feature
(assuming you have the option) is great with other antennas, especially

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and its "TUNE" selection.

2022-08-23 Thread Fred Jensen
Jerry:  Just in case you are not [yet] aware ... Small so-called
"magnetic loops" must be exactly resonant meaning that you go to TUNE
mode [i.e. feeding power to the loop] and then adjust the loop for exact
resonance.  While exact resonance is indicated by zero reactance looking
into the feedline, min SWR will usually work pretty good.  But it really
has to be at the minimum which is often quite sharp.  Getting the loop
tuning close, and then letting the ATU do the rest is a very quick way
to create a dummy load.

2. What information is in that CW signal?
The concern I have is the CW signal will get out from my mag-loop-antenna
into the "ether", so my call-sign needs to be there to satisfy the FCC.

TIA for any assistance.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and its "TUNE" selection.

2022-08-23 Thread Julia Tuttle
Hi Jerry,

The CW signal from TUNE (or ATU TUNE) is *truly* continuous, not pulsed on
and off to spell things in Morse. It's like holding down a straight key,
except it's a toggle so you still have both hands free. As Lee noted, you
can ID before or after tuning, or just roll it into your next transmission
on the same frequency.

In CW mode, the KX3 can be keyed by a key, paddles, keyer memory, or serial
port. If VOX is on, the rig always transmits when keyed. If VOX is off,
XMIT manually toggles whether the rig transmits when keyed. The latter is
useful if you're operating on a crowded desk and bumping the key or paddle
between transmissions is a possibility.
