[Elecraft] WTB - KX2

2024-05-22 Thread skazmarek
Someone broke into my truck and stole my pack with my KX2, N3ZN key,
antennas, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Grrr . My wife and I are leaving
on a trip of a lifetime this summer, going to Arches, Canyonlands, Grand
Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks and doing two weeks in Banff
and Jasper National Parks in the middle. I have a little SW-3B, which I can
use, but I'd really prefer to have a KX2. Elecraft says there's a 12- to
16-week lead time (even after I did my best to throw myself on their
sympathies).

Anyway, let me know if you have a KX2 (with the internal tuner) (and
preferably with the internal charger) you'd be willing to sell. I'll pretty
much pay full retail as long as the radio is working fine (and I'm not picky
about cosmetic issues).

[Elecraft] Regarding KX2 VFO tuning resolution

2023-08-14 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Neil,

Presence or absence of display digits shows the tuning resolution.

For any given operating setup, tapping RATE will toggle between two different
resolutions, normally 10 Hz and 100 Hz. However, there are two cases where RATE
toggles between 10 Hz and 1 Hz:

 - radio is in any DATA mode

 - audio peaking filter is turned on (CW mode; APF-AN switch)

The 1 Hz digit is also briefly turned on for auto-spot purposes (in CW and
PSK-D modes only, with MENU:CWT = ON).

Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] Newish… KX2 owner

2023-08-14 Thread David Gilbert

That's normal.  If it jumps in 10 Hz increments there is no point in
showing 1 Hz resolution.  And if fact, the number of digits shown tells
you what your tuning rate is.

Hi all,
Now that I've got all the facts..or most.Scam was much to strong a word
in referencing why didn't receive a response from Doug, K7CUU, after I mailed
and then emailed him a photo of my KX2 payment check on June 19th. The check
still hadn't arrived at his location as of the 24th. He doesn't use PayPal.
Back and fourth emails were working fine last week. We had, at least, six
overall amd stopped on June 19th.
During this "no contact" period, I felt I had no choice but to put a stop
payment on the check.

I finally called him on the phone today. I didn't call earlier since I was very
concerned that his health may have taken a turn for the worst and I didn't want
to burden his wife with an additional problem if that were the case.

So, bottom line, my apologies to Doug, K7CUU for me thinking the worst.

I don't know what experience you have with US Mail, but ours has been
that it can take WEEKS for mail to get to its destination, or it can
arrive in a few days. USPS managed to lose our CA tax return that we
sent Priority or Certified; last we heard after three weeks was that it
was in Minnesota on its way from Santa Cruz, CA to Sacramento, CA. Going
on the fourth week, we mailed a duplicate return. No check was included
with either mailing.

It's not at all uncommon for mail to take 4-5 days to get to its
destination. And, as you may have heard, mail is handled both by humans
and by machines. Both are well known to screw up.

Further, June 19 is a Federal holiday, thus a mail holiday, so mailing
it on Monday is like mailing it on Tuesday, and most mail doesn't move
beyond the local post office until that night.

IMO, there is FAR too much mistrust of our fellow man, and the blame
gets spread between certain politicians, predatory media, and social
media (what we used to call gossip when we were kids).

Uh, I am K7CUU and a gentleman from New Jersey contacted me about purchasing a
KX2 I listed for sale on this forum. I am of the impression we arrived at an
acceptable price about a week ago and have the unit, plus a couple extras, all
packaged up and ready to take to the post office. I would like to complete
this transaction, but I haven’t heard from him for several days and have found
nothing from him in my mail box. This post, below, is the first I have heard

Phase noise, both in the transmitted signal and that added to it the RX,
is mostly what makes a mess of two stations on the same band. Spurs,
generated within frequency-determining digital circuitry, are also
in-band defects.

Re: [Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-09 Thread Morgan Bailey
Last FD we ran 4 FTDX10s. No interstation interference with them being 8
feet from each other in a straight line. All antennas were within 100 feet
of each other. 2 cw stations and 2 phone stations had no problems. We did
not run CW and Phone on the same band at the same time, but had no problems
with phase noise hash. I ran 30 wpm CW and so did my son. We had no
problems. As for a great RX, there is nothing better out there in the price
range. Relays, yes. I do not care for QSK because I do not like to listen
to the noise all the time. Each of us used headphones for copy or boom mic
headsets. If you want something smaller and more compact, you might try the
FT710. It has almost the same RX as does the FTDX10 but in a smaller
package. I have not tried it. My SO2R/multi2 set up is with 2 FTDX101
radios. Again we have no problems. Because I find QSK worthless, relays do
not bother me being SO2R. Wearing a set of cans, What relays?

It has a relay at least for TX/RX switching. It's nothing like as
horrible as the old IC-706MK II but you'll want to be wearing enclosed
headphones.

It also does rather a lot via touch-screen, which can be a bit of a
nuisance at times.

Re: [Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-09 Thread Julia Tuttle
I've got a KX3 and an IC-7300.

The 7300 uses a moderately clacky relay for T/R switching but something
silent (to my ears) for sending CW while the relay is in the T position.

If you expect the basically instant and completely silent QSK of the KX3,
you'll be disappointed.

If you don't mind turning the QSK delay up a bit, it might not bug you, but
you might not want to for contesting.

Beyond the clattery QSK, I found the interface of the 7300 much less
efficient. Elecraft has quite expertly packed many commonly-used controls
onto those three knobs below the screen, and Icom has neither the UX
expertise nor the actual physical knobs to match that convenience.

Basically, I begrudgingly use the 7300 when I need the output power (I
don't own a KXPA100... yet), but far prefer basically everything about the
KX3 + PX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-09 Thread Jim Brown
One of the most important characteristics of a radio for FD is its
ability to play well with others. I have heard that the IC7300 does not.
The low cost Kenwood radios have, in general, been second best to the K3
and KX3 in that regard. Deficiencies of the Icom and Yaesu rigs are lots
of clicks and phase noise, and many of the Yaesu rigs have terrible
splatter on SSB.

Since the introduction of the K4, there have been a lot of K3s in good
shape selling for bargain prices. I recently bought an early vintage K3
with second RX, 5 8-pole filters, a P3/SVGA, and power meter for $2K
from a member of our contest club to have as a spare. Two weeks ago, the
P3/SVGA replaced the one in my primary station whose SVGA board had
failed. The K3 replaced a K3 that had gotten its RX fried during a CQP
county expedition. Both worked perfectly. I haven't need the power meter
yet.

The K3 is, by far, the best FD/expedition rig I've ever seen/used. Our
county expedition and FD team typically does three of these events a
year, and the newest of them is ten years old. Other than a couple of
SVGA boards, the only failures have been due to our failure to rig
antennas well enough to keep the RF of one rig out of the other's RX.
And we run KPA500s on the two stations in W6GJB's county expedition
trailer.

[Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-08 Thread n7tb
Hello All,

I have a KX2, KX3, PX3, KXPA100 and K4. I use my KX2 for QRP exclusively
mostly portable. My KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 was my home station until I
received the K4 a year ago. It is the finest rig I have ever owned. I use
my KX3, PX3 and KXPA100 at a second QTH but I also user it them in my very
small RV. It is not easy to deal with all the cabling that keeps all these
three components working. I feel like I am buried in interconnecting
cables. I have almost come to the conclusion that my KX3, PX3, and KXPA are
best suited for my second QTH.

For my RV and Field Day activities where I am operating QRO, I am looking
for another rig. I used my K4 at field day last year, but all the dust and
other issues, make me think that I want to keep it as my home rig.

I am almost exclusively a CW operator. I have an old IC-706MK II that
drives me crazy trying to operate CW with all the clacking relays.

I am looking at the IC-7300 as my potential field day and RV rig. Can
anyone who has used the IC-7300 for CW tell me if it still uses relays or
diodes for sending CW?

I know it won't compare to my Elecraft rigs, but for my use, it may be OK.
For those of you who have used the IC-7300 for CW, I would like to hear your
comments.

I have an old Icom AH-4 external tuner that will interface perfectly with
the IC-7300 and would give me great flexibility in using loops, doublets,
and long wires with my RV and field day.

Thanks for any comments you might have...I know it doesn't compare to our
beloved Elecraft rigs, but it might work for this specific application.

Thanks and 73,

Terry, N7TB

A friend changed my settings to display Morse to text and in trying to shut

understand.

Re: [Elecraft] Reset KX2 to factory settings.

2022-03-02 Thread Brian Hunt
Hopefully you saved the configuration using the KX2 Utility. If so, just reload
it.

In the manual, there is a table containing the menu descriptions and their
default options. Easy to go through and a good place to learn what they do.

EEINIT is described on page 56 of the manual. Basically the top line says DON’T
DO IT. If you do, you must have a configuration file to reload all the
calibration data and defaults.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] FS: KX2 Shack-In-A-Box with Lots of Extras

2022-02-22 Thread Nate Jedinak
Hello, all!

Planning to list this on QRZ but thought I'd offer it here first.
Everything you need for SOTA, POTA, Digi Modes. Open the box, and get
started at home or afield!

I've had great luck with this KX2, just not going to be using it much this
year so I'd like it to go to someone who will. The only issue I've ever
had was noting that on 10M, SSB power would start low and ramp up. I sent
it back to Elecraft and they noted this is a software "feature" and no
problem existed. However, it was also updated to most recent spec at that
time and re-calibrated. A few light signs of use on the transceiver and
accessories, but operationally as new.

Elecraft KX2 #757
Back at factory 4/2021 for updating and calibration (harmonic suppression
kit installed, C83/C98 caps updated, brought up to revision A7 from A1).
Includes:
KXPD2 Paddle
KXAT2 Internal ATU
KXIO2 Real Time Clock
2x KXBT2 Battery Packs
KXBC2 Charger
Quick Release Ground Plug
MH3 mic
LowePro Case
AX1 Antenna with extra AX1E 40M extension and AXB1 Bipod
BNC-BP for random-wire antennas
SideKX heatsink, SideKX protective cover
QRPWorks K-Board with keyboard
Easy Digi for KX2
KXUSB Cable

$2200 total value, for $1325 shipped. Please email me directly with
questions or to make a purchase. I will not split up the bundle, no
trades. Thank you!

[Elecraft] New KX2 VFO knob wobble.

2021-05-25 Thread djchase
Hi, new KX2 owner here. My new KX2 was delivered on May 10, and had a
significant wobble in the VFO knob.  After carefully removing the knob, I
discovered that the majority of the wobble was due to the loose fit between the
outer structure of the control and the panel opening.  I have temporarily
carefully shimmed the gap with some 24 gauge wire, but I believe that a more
permanent solution would be a locknut on the control housing which I do not
have.   With this temporary fix in place, the tuning knob works well.  I
contacted Elecraft Support on May 11 or 12 regarding this situation, but have
not received a reply.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a more permanent
fix?  Thank you in advance.  Dave, K8RXB Sent from my Galaxy

[Elecraft] FS: KX2, W1, AIM-4170

2021-01-20 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Moving out of CA before they put up a fence! I’ve got the following items for
sale that will help (slightly) lighten the load of packing and moving:

KX2 serial #01990 with built-in KXAT2 antenna tuner, Fred Cady KX2 book, and
Right-angle BNC connector. The KX2 and tuner work perfectly - no scratches or
dents. Has never been used on any digital modes (other than CW!) and has never
been driven really hard. Book is in brand-new condition. Cost new would run you
$1,080 plus tax & shipping. ASKING $850 shipped USPS Priority mail to lower 48.

Pro Audio Engineering PAE-KX22 Heatsink, Left Plate, and Plexiglass cover for
KX2. Still in shipping box, never out of the packaging. With PAE installation
and owner's manual. Cost new will run you $130 plus shipping. ASKING $100
shipped USPS Priority Mail to lower 48.

Elecraft W1 Wattmeter - built. Assembled by me - works fine, however the green
and yellow LEDs were reversed when I built it. D’oohhh. Doesn’t affect the
operation, I just didn’t want to bother unsoldering the LEDs and re-doing them!
Cost new (as a kit) will run you $130 plus tax & shipping. ASKING $70 shipped
USPS Priority Mail to lower 48.

W6PQL 2 meter/80 watt amp and MFJ-873 VHF/UHF power/SWR meter. Built per the
May 2013 QST article, has been my 2 meter amp driven by my K3. Works fine. Will
be accompanied by the QST article pages. I made a small user-mod to the MFJ-873
- added an on/off switch on the back of the unit so the internal meter lamp can
be turned off if desired. ASKING $100 shipped USPS Priority Mail to the lower
48.

Array Solutions AIM-4170C VNA. Covers 100KHz - 170 MHz. Includes the VNA, 110v
power adapter, 12v Power Pole cable, Serial - USB cable, Array Solutions
short/open/50-ohm precision loads, and the original hard plastic carry case.
This is a great VNA for anyone doing antenna work - simple setup to your
Windows-based PC. Just connect power and the cable to a USB port on your
computer. Free, very comprehensive software at ArraySolutions.com
. This unit has been superseded by the AIM-4300
which currently sells for $880. I’m ASKING $250 for the 4170C package shipped
USPS Priority Mail to the lower 48.

I can accept PayPal to my call @ arrl.net, cash, or cleared check.

Please contact me off-list if you have questions or are interested.

Thanks, Jim / W6JHB

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Walter Underwood
For the AM broadcast band, this is normal. Here is a 2016 post from Wayne, N6KR
about
using the KX2 for SWL. The reduced sensitivity is to reduce intermod in the PIN
diodes used
for T/R switching, if I remember correctly.

Also, the KX3 and KX2 are designed to be used with the preamp for normal
operation.

=
By the way, sensitivity of the KX2 is excellent for SWL segments between the
ham bands. The sensitivity does fall off pretty rapidly below about 3 MHz
because the KX2 was designed for 80-10 m and doesn't have filters specifically
for 3 MHz or lower. You can still tune down to as low as 500 kHz, but you'll
only be able to copy very strong signals below the 160 meter band.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Bill Frantz
I will add, the Elecraft tuners can tune almost anything. When
you do a tune (Don's last step below), if the relays click for a
long time before settling into a not-super-good solution, that
is a symptom of no antenna, or a short circuit in place of an
antenna. If you are on the same band as the setting on the AX1,
tuning should be fairly quick.

The AX1 does not work inside my house unless I take it near a window.

So take a look at your situation - take the KX2 outside with
the AX1 and a trailing counterpoise wire to see if you can hear
any signals.

Make sure the switch on the AX1 is set to the band you are listening to.
Do a TUNE to set the KX2 ATU to the frequency of interest.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Doug Daniels
Have you only tried the AX1 or have you tried the BNC binding post with two
wires connected to it? I've tested my KX2 by painter's taping the antenna
wire to my ceiling and running the counterpoise along the floor. If that
works, you know it's the AX1 and not the rig. CQ WW CW is this weekend,
there will be people wall to wall on the bands, good time for testing.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 - what am I doing wrong?

2020-11-23 Thread Philip Cochran
Yes, I have a counterpoise attached. I’m in my home office. The counterpoise
just lies on the floor. I do not (yet) have an external antenna. My concern
is that I hear nothing at all on any band at any time. It’s as if there is no
antenna or a broken connection internally. My experience years ago was that I
could regularly hear something on at least some bands.

Phil,

Do you have the counterpoise wire connected to a screw on the KX2?
The AX1 is not much of an antenna without it.

[Elecraft] Interfacing KX2 to KPA1500

2020-09-01 Thread David F. Reed
I am trying to drive my KPA1500 with my KX2; I know I will get about 200
watts output which is fine.  I want to do it for the time period between
selling my K3 and receiving my K4.

I have  the KXPACBL_KXPA100 Integrated Cable and KX2ACBL_KX2 Accessory
Cable set, but am unsure how I hook it up.  It seems there will be some
leftover stuff dangling...

Anyone out there done this that can clue me in please?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/KX2 remote for FD

2020-05-15 Thread K8TE
Let's see Bob. Where are the results posted? In the Contest section of the
ARRL web site.

How are they listed? By category and total score.

Who manages FD? Those who manage ARRL contests?

Are there rules like a contest? Yes.

Do groups compete against other groups? Yes.

Is there more to FD than making QSO's? Yes, somebody told me there was
while I was searching through the results database.

Is saying "Please copy." OK? Not if you want to make a lot of contacts.

Is FD a great, wonderful, fun way to learn about contesting? Yes!

Are the words "Not a contest." spoken in jest? Yes, a large percentage of
the time.

Is it fun to win a category? Oh yeah!

Is it fun to come in 4th overall? Oh baby it is!

Is it great to have all Elecraft gear at FD? No, it's a necessity to do
well if you have more than one rig. I have been (unwillingly) to the Dark
Side and prefer the ability to have three rigs on the same band, two of them
on SSB, and not experience interference until moving to within 10 kHz.

Will I miss competing with a group of friends? I certainly will!

Will I still do FD? Is there anything else to do the fourth weekend of
June?

Will many individuals do it differently than last year? I hope so! Follow
your State's Department of Health orders and stay healthy. This pandemic is
real. It is not a contest that anyone should take stupid, unsafe steps to
play. The listings are sad and we are nowhere close to beating this thing!

And please stop whining about the spirit of FD. We're in the middle of a
pandemic and you're worried about people making too many contacts or
operating differently. Stay within FD rules, get on-the-air somehow, and
make as many contacts as you can. If really necessary, enjoy some good food
and drink, but not in mass gatherings however your State/County/City defines
them. Stay healthy! HamVention 2021 is around the corner. Hopefully, I'll
have my K4 before then.

73, Bill, K8TE

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/KX2 remote for FD

2020-05-14 Thread Bill Frantz
I remember my first field day, which was actually fairly
recently (last 25 years). I had joined the West Valley Amateur
Radio Association because I felt I should support a repeater if
I wanted to use repeaters as I traveled around the country and
"west valley" was where my home was located.

Well, the club is seriously into Field Day, with the goal of
having as much fun as possible with as little work as possible.
We try to qualify for all those 100 point items: emergency
power, green power, GOTA, run a class, attract local pols etc. etc.

Anyone who wants to get on the air will have a chance at
operating, with a elmer if they need it. If you have a license,
you can sit in one of the main operating positions. There is
also a very active GOTA station for anyone who walks in off the
trail that passes the location we use on Mora Hill.

Well, that first field day, I had my arm twisted to try PSK on
the digital station. I found that PSK was enough like the
computer chat rooms which had been product of my company that I
could relax and just operate. It was this experience which
changed me from an equipment builder to an operator. (I still
build equipment.)

I moved from there into digital DXing. I caught the contest bug
when I discovered I only needed a few QSOs for DXCC. One
international DX contest pushed me over 100.

I think that year we came in #4 nationally. We always treat the
contest part of field day very seriously as well. It turns out
that many club members are contesters and for them, a high score
is part of having fun. And working with other people to set up a
massive field day operation is fun too.

Where we aren't particularly good is the food. We aren't
permitted to have any kind of fire -- miles of dry grass all
around our location -- so all food is brought up from homes or restaurants.

So for me, the bottom line is: Lets go have fun. And big scores
are a lot of fun.

This year, it doesn't seem likely we will get a permit for Mora
Hill. The general plan is to have everyone see what they can do
by themselves. But, if lightning strikes and the permit comes
through, we will see if we can do an operation with proper
social distancing.

BTW, one comment I have heard from my emcomm buddies is that
although there haven't been any problems with normal
communications (phones, internet etc.) some emcomm people have
been asked to help because they are already familiar with ICS
and working with non-ham emergency workers.

Back in the day when we had to log on paper, we also had to keep paper
dupe sheets, one per band per mode. If you're gonna log on paper, ya
gotta do that too. :)

An important part of EMCOMM is knowing the rules and following them. FD
has rules too, one of them is that you can work a station once per band
per mode.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/KX2 remote for FD

2020-05-14 Thread Edward R Cole

I agree with what Bob says:

So a couple comments:
Whether we realize it (or not) the pandemic "is" an emergency, so
this year's FD has different restrictions which may not be supported
by the "contest rules".

15-years as communications chief for an emergency response
organization, the overwhelming reality was every event is different
and response must adjust to the changed circumstances. I wrote the
"Comm Plan" for each event for ICS. Now retired eleven years.

IF you operate FD from home you can simulate some issues (like
antenna down or no power). Or if allowed operating in remote
locations try single-op mobile/portable.

I have a home emergency generator so might simulate loss of power at
home running 100w on 20m & 6m.

Our local club is still planning on a traditional FD (but state
mandates may not allow).

I agree, specially on the first sentence.?? I've been participating in
FD since the very early '60's.? However it has become a "contest" to see
who and what organization can accumulate the most points.? A contact is
a contact, a multiplier is a mathematical term.??? It has no place in
Field Day operation.

The KX2 has built-in logging of all text sent with the keyer paddle. You can
later scroll back through the data and transfer contacts to a formal log.

In practice I stop and log contacts, locations, and conditions on paper, even
during FD. Running 10 watts hand-held, every contact is an achievement and an
adventure :) I recommend everyone try it at least once.

ARRL says it’s “an informal contest” and says that the “contest part” is to
contact as many folks as possible, as well as what Bob notes.

Everybody is right, but this duality has more than once created a bit of
tension between the picnickers and the contesters in my neck of the woods.

Whatever, it’s been the best testament to the front end of a K3 I‘be

Yes Wayne, it was one of the greatest Field Days of all. You could
track the course of sunlight on 10 meters (which went dead at sundown),

While the ARRL did not list it as a contest, it was regarded as a

I see nothing about this being a contest.

Yeah, they've been saying that for years. Saying something doesn't make
it true. For the vast majority of contesters of my generation, it was
our first contest. It's a "gateway drug." And if you don't think it's a
contest, you've never been part of a club that takes FD seriously. The
club I participated with in Chicago was, and still is, one of the top
three in its class, usually #1 or #2, and our current group in W6 has
won 1AB three times.

Important parts of doing well in FD are searching for and getting
permission for a good site that is RF quiet and has good possibilities
for rigging antennas, checking out all the gear in advance, selecting
radios that play well together in a multi-transmitter environment
(Elecraft is a big winner), rejecting those that don't (el-cheapo
160-440MHz for $1K junk), learning how to separate antennas to minimize
interference between stations while maximizing performance, checking out
every part of our stations in advance. There's a lot to be learned that
prepares us for emergencies from every element of what I've outlined above.

FD SHOULD also teach "short and sweet" operating procedures that are
directly applicable for emergency operation -- that's when I first
learned it from my contesting Elmer, W8FUM.

Field day can be both an operating event and a contest. This is not an
either/or situation. The stated purpose is what ARRL says it is. The incentive
to participate, the icing on the cake, is a contest that is part of the event.

You can get 950 points with zero QSOs. I’m assuming that the emergency power
bonus does not apply if you don’t make any contacts. If it does, then you can
score 1050. The rest of the score comes from contest-style contacts plus GOTA
and youth contacts.

Jim,

I bet FD in 1957 was a real hoot (at the record peak of the sunspot cycle).

(FWIW, I was born in '57, which explains a lot.)

From ARRL - At its core, Field Day is a local event and an opportunity for
local amateur radio clubs to showcase the skills, science and technologies that
make radio communication such a wonderful hobby and a valuable public service.

I see nothing about this being a contest.

Interesting. I never make that assumption in em-comm. Having other people is
handy, but each operator must be self-sufficient.

Putting up the massive club station? Yeah, that needs a lot of people and won’t
happen this year. Here are some photos from 2017, with seven towers, including

I agree, specially on the first sentence.   I've been participating in
FD since the very early '60's.  However it has become a "contest" to see
who and what organization can accumulate the most points.  A contact is
a contact, a multiplier is a mathematical term.    It has no place in
Field Day operation.

I can operate pretty much self-contained from home, and do so for statewide
ARES exercises, where I serve as a designated OES in Illinois.

I don't need outside electricity, phones, internet or repeaters. I gather
messages (ICS-2130) from field stations via VHF/UHF Simplex (mostly) with a
little portable HF thrown in and relay to our State ECOM HQ in Springfield on

The distance is about 280 miles, and is just right for my "purpose designed" 80

I’ll comment briefly about what we’re doing but I don’t want this to morph
into a discussion about what others may think or wish to do for FD. Remote
operating is as likely in a disaster scenario as any other-all depends on your
infrastructure and whether you rely on conventional internet access or other

this year is what you choose to do comfortably and explore options to keep you
safe. Our setup is designed for near total isolation and no close contact with

Exploring remote operating will also benefit many hams that may not have access

With the current COVID-19 conditions, I'll be staying at home. No Field
Day participation for me.  Many in our club feel the same way.  Too risky.

The objective of Field Day originally was to show and demonstrate
capability of station operating under simulated conditions.  Thus no
phones, no electricity, and no internet.  So with this, how does one
expect to operate remote?

I was curious what folks might be doing for remote setups for field day,in
particular for the KX3 and KX2. Our club has a great 5 acre site with tall
trees that we’ll use to spread out,but it would be nice to have a remote option
as well. We have a bunch of KX3s and 2s-no K3 or K4s as yet-well almost no one
has a 4! I have a pignology-piglet setup but I don’t think that’ll work for

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX2 military use

2020-02-08 Thread Fred Jensen
As a former DoD contractor:  Both the FAR and DFARS have specific
sections defining the requirements for the DoD to purchase Commercial
Off-The-Shelf [COTS] hardware and software products.  Much of those
sections is devoted to who owns the patents/copyrights and distribution
rights.  It's nearly always up to the Program staff and Contracting
Officer regarding technical specifications, however the competition
rules still apply if there is more than one available product that meets
the specifications. A program can purchase "samples" for evaluation from
any mfr and I'd guess that the KX2 has little or no competition.

Products that are for general military needs [e.g. ruggedized vehicles,
flight and space qualified devices, etc.] are almost always purchased
via contract, often as Task Orders on IDIQ [indefinite delivery
indefinite quantity], multi-vendor contracts.

Personally, I think it's cool!  In the 60's in SE Asia, our "portable"
A/G radios were 35 lb back packs [AN/PRC-10's] and the dry cell
batteries would last a few hours ... unless you transmitted.  Can't
imagine how a KX2 would have changed things on mission for us. [:=)

Yes. They may be using aftermarket accessories -- not sure.

I believe they use it with both internal and external battery.

3. The stock KX2 (unfortunately) provides no transmit coverage outside the ham

Just the MARS enable.

4. Federal agencies (including CAP, but not MARS) normally use radio equipment
compliant with standards established by the National Telecommunications and
Information Administration (NTIA) ... [but] US military agencies have sometimes
adopted commercial radio gear with no changes.

I believe the KX2 was approved for COTS (common-off-the-shelf) military
purchase.

The point we were trying to make is that the KX2 fills a functional need that
is not presently filled by other gear, with or without compliance to specific
standards. They needed a 1-pound radio that covered all modes and all bands.
Someone showed them a KX2 and demonstrated that it did the job.

If the KX2 were EMI-hardened and ruggedized and waterproofed to the degree that
some manpack radios are, it would simply be another large, heavy, overpriced
piece of military gear. As it stands, it does the job they need it to, just has
it does for thousands of hams using it for SOTA, hiking, backpacking, etc. To
roughly paraphrase, it was a tenth the weight, a tenth the size, and a tenth
the price.

With all that going for it, they could afford to lose a few. But the rigs have
proven very reliable. (Wish we could post the entire, colorful history of what

Yes. They may be using aftermarket accessories -- not sure.

I believe they use it with both internal and external battery.

Just the MARS enable.

(Wish we could post the entire, colorful history of what
their rigs have been through. It was scary! Amazing that the soldiers survived,
much less the radios.)

I know for the KX3 that it can be “unlocked” to be used outside the ham
bands. I would assume the KX2 has the same facility. For my KX3 I needed
to show my operating authority as an Army MARS operator.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX2 military use

2020-02-08 Thread Mike Morrow
Wayne,

This information is extremely interesting and more than a little unexpected. I
am fascinated by the capability of the KX2 (mine is 2.5 years old), but its
internals have very little isolation and protection from adverse ambient
conditions...an essemtial requirement for most gear in military service.

1. Is the KX2 supplied by Elecraft identical to those supplied to amateurs?
It would be interesting to know if and what its military users have fashioned
some protection from the elements. At the least, the aftermarket Kx22 heat
sink, SideKX left side panel, and SideKX cover would seem appropriate.

2. Is the KX2 being supplied by external DC power? I'd predict short life for
the speaker connections with frequent removal of the bottom cover for KXBT2
replacement.

3. The stock KX2 (unfortunately) provides no transmit coverage outside the ham
bands except 5.06 to 5.45 MHz for 60m. Is a special firmware load being used
to permit general coverage transmit?

4. Federal agencies (including CAP, but not MARS) normally use radio equipment
compliant with standards established by the National Telecommunications and
Information Administration (NTIA) which manages the use of all federal
spectrum. Agencies self-evaluate equipment specs using information supplied by
the equipment manufacturer. The CAP currently shows at

https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/emergency-services/radio/communications/radios-radio-network

a broad spectrum of ham and commercial gear in which only the FT-817 with
TXCO-9 meets NTIA specs. They evaluated the K2, K3S, and KX3. I suspect the
military users of the KX2 have not formally evaluated its NTIA compliance.

US military agencies have sometimes adopted commercial radio gear with no
changes. In 1965 the Collins KWM-2A MF/HF SSB/CW transceiver was adopted as
the RT-718/FRC-93 ...and it had very little protection from adverse
environmental conditions.

KX2 back in my day.  There are few things worse than NOT being able to
talk to the folks you need to talk to.  And not far away on that

Those were the ones that I remember because I was the (solo) operator at
the Los Angeles Civil Defense District 43 station from 1957-1960. As a
Tech I didn't have HF privileges and could only operate 2-meters as part

I don't believe they were available to the general public.
The first two Gonset Communicators portable & base, were gray hammertone and
the third generation was white, with blue/gray knobs, very nice looking too.

Re: [Elecraft] Cammo KX2? (Was: Copy cat - no way)

2019-09-04 Thread ktalbott
I like tan but must admit that yellow might be more practical. Actually, I will

touchup paint. Well, I would actually use any Elecraft color even without the
touchup paint.

I grabbed an image of a KX3 drawing and used the 'paint bucket' tool in Paint
to create different colored KX3 renditions here:

Some look pretty cool. You can take these and make your own colored versions
