Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 command mode default k30 k31
Joe MicroHAM can have two settings (like for two different rigs) : one for K3 basic (=K2 in fact) and an other for K3/K31. In the second case it is not a problem if it switches to K31 by adding K31 if necessary. But of course if Wayne removes this feature I applaud since I am not convinced it is absolutely required. 73, Laurent F6DEX -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-command-mode-default-k30-k31-tp3752716p3759463.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] xmit problem?
I guess I am fortunate not to have never a problem with the TX output power, always I have seen 110 W on CW and 110W PEP on SSB on all bands,my wattmeters are BIRD and the one inside the PalStar tuner which both agree in same reading,I adjusted the power calibration trough the Utilities and it showed 5.1 and 50W always, mine is serial 2192. In 10 months of use, only problem I have had is the volumen and rf gain plastic knobs were broken twice and Elecraft replaced then quick, other than that my K3 never fails and I use it daily on CW and SSB,sometimes also on digital modes. [Elecraft] ERR TxG
Ok Ive completed the watt meter calibration and the radio and external meter both are in agreement now but a new problem has raised its head. ( sort of remember this happening when I first put the rig together but the error didnt repeat). When I do the Tx gain calibrate the utility says there is too high an swr (cantenna is still attached 50 ohm approx) 160 calibrates but the error (ERR TxG) starts there after on 60 or 40. More thoughts? I wonder if Wayne watches email on the weekend. [Elecraft] TxG
Seems that the problem is on 80 and 40. I went manually through tx gain calibrate and at the moment the error only shows on 80 and 40. Radio transmits. The radio says the swr is 1.1 to 1, external meter says 1.1 to 1 but the utility still says high swr. Should have fixed this at the time of build I suppose. I remember adjusting the watt meter a bit to get the tx gain calibrate to eliminate the error message which is why I had the low out put to begin with. [Elecraft] Incredible Radio Tales
For all of you for whose interest in radio extends beyond QSOs on the Ham bands, here is a fascinating 45 minute audio program by Richard Dillman, RD of the KPH project and long-time transmitter wrangler (broadcast engineer). http://www.radiomarine.org/IRT/ The program includes descriptions and audio examples of everything from the natural sounds one hears on the air, to spy broadcasts, to secret Sky King messages sent to nuclear bombers, to the development and rise of the big shore stations like KPH and the story of one of the most famous KPH radio operators who went to sea and was torpedoed twice during WWII. (I first heard the Sky King messages late at night on radio watch in the 1950's. Hearing them again still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. ) The program originally aired on public station KWMR in Marin County, California (just north of San Francisco) where RD and others are restoring and maintaining radio station KPH. Be aware that the link is not streaming audio, but a 43 mB mp3 file for downloading. Originating here in the USA, it is in English. [Elecraft] K3 filter ringing at 50Hz
I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this or is it just me. With 3.30 firmware I am noticing some ringing on CW with the DSP bandwidth at 50Hz. It clears up at 100Hz. I don't remember hearing this with earlier firmware. I haven't tried reloading older firmware. I considered that this was a function of my listening to a lot of weak stations in noisy band conditions this past month while chasing DXpeditions. But today I have been on 20 meters in the CA QSO party. The band is quiet and the signals are strong but the ringing is still there at 50Hz. My narrow xtal filter is the 5 pole 200Hz filter and I am making these assessments with NR off and RX EQ flat. 73, Mike K2MK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter ringing at 50Hz
I'm running a pre-release beta (f/w ver 3.41). Hardware is an 8 pole 250 Hz filter and no NR. I am using a centre frequency/pitch of 700 Hz. On 80m this evening (8pm local) there is little difference between 50 Hz and wider settings of the DSP bandwidth on both weak and strong signals, the band is fairly quiet. I don't often go that narrow as few can net within 300 Hz let alone 50 Hz, so have little experience of using that bandwidth, but it sounds fine here on my K3. NR has little effect on CW at very narrow bandwidths like 50 Hz, however it doesn't make the signal ring at any level of NR setting. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 == I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this or is it just me. [Elecraft] K3: Mixer Commands? - A slight return
Last April there was a thread started by Lyle in reply to a post by Dave, AB7E, about programming the audio mixer in the K3 via external commands. Based on what Marcus, HB9BRJ, discovered about the command structure I have mapped the complete set of mixer commands as follows: Main=main receiver audio; Sub=sub-receiver audio; L=left earphone; R=right earphone !bec3; Main LR default main receiver setting !bed1; Main L, Sub R default sub-receiver setting !bed3; Main LR, Sub Rmost useful for split and SO2V operation !becb; Main LR, Sub Lalternate preference of previous command !bed8; Sub LR !bed9; Sub LR, Main L !beda; Sub LR, Main R !bedb; Main LR, Sub LR I have programmed eight of the command tester macros in the Elecraft K3 Utility with these commands so I can control the mixer on the fly. The Main/Sub balance can be controlled with the outer (Sub) volume control once the proper CONFIG MENU setting is chosen (SUB AF set to BALANCE). To quote Lyle Be sure SPKRS+PH is OFF, or SPKRS=2, with these commands. This setup is very convenient except that the commands are not sticky. If you turn the sub-receiver off and back on or power down and back up then you have to reenter the command. While most of the commands are not very useful to me the one thing I would like to have under control is the default value for the audio mixer when the sub-receiver is turned on. Also if an external program (such as N1MM) sends a macro to set the audio mixer then it would be preferable to have the setting not change unless another macro was sent to cancel the previous choice. I have heard that this is not the case at the present but I haven't tested it myself. I know that all of this can be done with an external audio mixing board. In my opinion that solution is a very inefficient use of resources, which are already available in the K3. Lyle would you please put the default audio mixer configuration choice on the DSP firmware development list if it isn't already? 73 Gary, N7IR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 option installation sequence question
I have a K2 on order and plan to add the KSB2, KAT2, KDSP2 and K160RX. The 100w option and KAT2-100 will come later and probably be installed in a separate enclosure. My question is regarding any advice as to building and installing any of the above options during the K2 build. In other words will the attendant de-construction involved with any of these options be a reason to install the option during the original build? Re: [Elecraft] K2 option installation sequence question
Gary, While you have the heat-sink off during the K2 build, install the header for the K160RX, the K160RX components that go on the RF Board (C13, C14 and C75) and the AUX RF header from the KAT2 kit. The only reason is so you will not have to remove the heat sink later to install these items. The K160RX may require tweaking the 80 meter bandpass filter a bit and the KSB2 option will change the way you set the K2 IF filters, so do those first. The other options can be done in any order you choose, and they will not require modifying the alignment of anything other than that option itself. FB on the external enclosure for the KPA100 and KAT100 - note that you will require the KIO2 or a suitable substitute when that happens. 73, Don W3FPR Gary W. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Mixer Commands? - A slight return
I've played with the last command. It is exactly what I have needed since obtaining the K3. It eliminates a significant drop in main AF experienced here when going from main to split with subRX for weak CW sigs. (minus splitter loss of course) No my drop isn't due to a faulty subin board. That was replaced and helped a couple db. Note: I'm a mono earphone person and like both RX AF's in both ears. What I'm after is maintaining the total Main RX AF level to the head while adding the subrx AF-- like one would do with two separate rx's and a mixer. Then play with AF levels as needed. The last command comes quite close to that. I don't understand the speakers+phone off limitation. The mixed audio is needed on line out as well to run a single AF channel TNC for split RTTY operations. As an interim measure, how about making such commands sticky? 73 de Brian/K3KO Gary, N7IR wrote: Last April there was a thread started by Lyle in reply to a post by Dave, AB7E, about programming the audio mixer in the K3 via external commands. KSB2 involves some construction work at the front panel and better to be done at the first round. 73 Johnny VR2XMC 寄件人﹕ Gary W. The 100w option and KAT2-100 will come later and probably be installed in a separate enclosure. My question is regarding any advice as to building and installing any of the above options during the K2 build. In other words will the attendant de-construction involved with any of these options be a reason to install the option during the original build? Aside from my own priorities, these seem to be pretty independent. My inclination is to do the K2 immediately followed by the K160RX, KAT2. The SSB and DSP will be added soon thereafter. Any pointers would be appreciated. 73 Gary - KJ7RT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Yahoo!香港提供網上安全攻略,教你如何防範黑客! 請前往 http://hk..promo.yahoo.com/security/ 了解更多! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The season has most definitely changed, autumn has come in like a lion. Where we had sunny skies and 80 degree temperatures only two weeks ago it is now rainy and cold with highs in the low to mid 50s. It will warm up and get sunny next week but the highs keep getting downgraded each time I check. Looks like low 60s but there will be sun. Due to the change in weather the heating season has begun. I have had a fire burning for the last week. On the other hand, propagation went from quite poor on Tuesday to very good by Friday. Twenty meters was good in the morning and eighty meters was good at dinner time. The sun has been semi-active and once the ionosphere settled down conditions were good. I just checked and our recent sunspots are now passing over the limb of the sun. Maybe some new ones will crop up so we can continue our progress toward solar maximum once again. Please join us tomorrow evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help) Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0100z (Sunday 6 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay well, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 S-Meter and Noise
Tom, I have three radio's in my shack besides the K3. I've checked their S-meters with the recommended XG1 and all have comparable readings. All four are equally quiet without an antenna connected and with a dummy load connected. When connected to an antenna the K3 has about 2 S units more noise indicated than the other radios connected to the same antenna (A/B switch) and the noise level sounds about that much louder. All volume controls are at about 9 o'clock. This applies to most bands. Strangely, WARC bands seem to be mostly excepted. This afternoon I took the my K3, K2 and FT-857D mobile using a 54 Li'l Tarheel II screwdriver antenna tuned to 20 meters. I operated the K3 K2 from a SLA battery with the van turned off. I was in a park with nothing electrical for at least a half mile. Volume was again set at 9 0'clock on all three. The K3 have a steady S1 with peaks to S3. The other radios had S0 with no peaks. Volumes sounded appropriate for indicated S-meter reading. I've almost completely disassembled the radio and reassembled it and done the EE INIT reset with no change. It's apparent this K3 is more sensitive to antenna noise than the other four radio's which are all about equal. This leads me to believe this particular radio is going to bury weak signals in noise making them harder to dig out than the other radios. I've exchanged several emails with support and next week I'm supposed to talk with someone higher up at Aptos. I'm trying to be patient with this but it has been over a month since I placed the initial order. During assembly I had to replace the DSP board for an unrelated problem. If the radio has to go back to Aptos it will be close to two months since ordering before I have a fully functional radio. The S-meter shows about S-2/3 noise and there is about an equal level of noise from the speaker. I have an IC-756ProIII sitting beside it and it shows S-0 with minimum noise from the speaker. Of course, I'm using the same mode and have set the filters in both to the same width. I have played with the preamp and attenuator in both and the K3 always shows a higher noise level with accompanying S-meter reading. My K2 is extremely quiet and does just great on the many portable trips I take. I may well be missing something on the K3 in all the myriad menu settings of the K3 but don't have a clue at this point as to how to proceed. I sure don't want to think this $2000 radio has such a noise problem and I'm going to have to live it. Does anyone have any information that may help? I would be most appreciative. Thank you, have a good day and 73. Jim, W0EM [snip] Have you compared the two rigs with their antennas disconnected? Are they both on the same antenna? Have you calibrated the Icon/K2 S-Meters with a known 50 microvolt signal? What band are you on? [Elecraft] K3 split function saved to memory ?
I can't save a split function, same band, to a K3 memory. It saves both VFO's correctly but not the split function. What don't I have enabled on my K3? Re: [Elecraft] K3 split function saved to memory ?
If CONFIG:SPLT SV is set to YES, then the state of SPLIT, RIT, and XIT will all be saved on band change and in memories as well. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 3, 2009, at 7:36 PM, Jim Rinehart wrote: I can't save a split function, same band, to a K3 memory. Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise
Jim, If it's an issue with the S-meter, it may well be corrected by the corrected RF GAIN calibration procedure due out in the next beta release. I can send it to you to try. Generally if you connect an antenna to three radios and one of them sounds louder, it means that radio has more gain and/or lower phase noise. The K3 has excellent sensitivity and low noise, so this wouldn't surprise me. It suggests you can run with preamp off most of the time -- that's a good thing. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 3, 2009, at 7:33 PM, Jim HaRRIS wrote: Tom, I have three radio's in my shack besides the K3.
