[Elecraft] FOR SALE: Elecraft K3/100 160-6m Transceiver — KAT3 ATU—KPA100 Amplifier—XRX3 Subreceiver

2021-12-20 Thread Charles Tropp
Elecraft K3/100 160-6m Transceiver Serial #2502 with the standard 2.7 kHz
filter, the KAT3 Internal Auto Antenna Tuner, KPA100W Amplifier and XRX3
Subreceiver. The subreceiver is identical to the main receiver and has its
own 400Hz filter. It can tune the same range of frequencies as the main
receiver and is terrific at busting DX pileups.

   - This K3 also comes with lots of extras including:
   - Three (3) additional CW Filters: 700Hz, 400Hz and 250Hz for the utmost
   in selectivity.
   - KXV3A Interface Option which provides a separate receive antenna input
and output, an input and output for use with an external transverter, and a
buffered i.f. output. (Handy for adding an external Panadapter or SDR).
   - The K3 has been upgraded with the KSYN3A synthesizers in both the Main
and Subreceiver. The synthesizer produces cleaner synthesized signals
leading to better transmitter and receiver performance and has a better
switch time to improve TX/RX switching for high speed CW.
   - There is no internal sound card in this K3, but included in this
bundle is the TigerTronics Signal Link USB interface which adds an external
sound card and comes with the Elecraft connection cable and complete
documentation. Just what you need to work the new digital modes such as FT8.
   - You can connect a PC that has a serial port to download firmware and
software upgrades as well as to allow computer control of the K3 with your
favorite contest and general loggers. No serial port? No problem—I include
the original Elecraft KUSB Universal Serial Bus Adapter cable which allows
you to simply plug the K3 into an available USB port.
   - This K3 was upgraded, calibrated and aligned by the Elecraft Factory
in 2015 to meet or exceed all factory specifications.
   - The installation and operation manuals are included as well as all
   upgrade and repair documentation.
   - This unit is sold *AS IS *and subject to the following *caveat* which
may or may not be of concern to you: I am unable to get my Begali Single
Lever Paddle to work properly with the Elecraft Internal Keyer. I can only
send dits or dahs (depending on the menu option) but not both. In other
words one side of the paddle does not work. There may be a problem with the
paddle jack connection. I have always preferred to use either a straight
key or my external Winkeyer USB as it performs well with the software
programs that I use and it plugs directly into the Key Jack which works
   fine.

I am asking $1,695 for this package + Shipping via Priority US Mail to
CONUS.

Re: [Elecraft] Best Portable Wire

2021-12-20 Thread Ed Cole

Well Rich,

Guess you are a late comer.

I got my ham license at age 14 and I am now 77. I've been married 18
years. She was married to ham before me, so had been "broke-in" before
getting "saddled" with me (western sayin). That was the good news and
the bad news.

When she arrived north to live with me, I already had a 50-foot tower up
and 8-foot dish inside a "golfball" radome. She wanted a nicer home but
knew there were two requirements: room for my 13 sled dogs and room for
my antennas (and ham shack). Now I have four towers and a 16-foot dish.
All the sled dogs have passed onto "dog heaven" and only have one
house dog which is hers.

She knows the money goes into ham stuff and not beers at the local pub
(plus skirt chasing).

And she is even the NA sales rep for Dubus Magazine (which she gets a
little 'pin' money from). Dubus is published in Germany and is VHF/mw
ham technical magazine + European VHF activity news. She even has
accompanied me to ham conferences.

She is not a ham. But she is a good one and I'm keeping her!

[Elecraft] K3 and EasyPal program ?

2021-12-20 Thread Bob KD7YZ
Hello Elecraft List

Some guys were sending .jpeg's back and forth on 80m this morning and I asked
them what program they used.

All were using EasyPal from EasyPal.org (free) .

So I received several pix from the group but was never able to transmit.

The Setup mernu has a few rigs to chose from but not a single Elecraft.

Anyone ever used a K3 with that program?

[Elecraft] K2

2021-12-20 Thread snowy howell via Elecraft
Hi All
Update on the K2 and its problems or now lack of them.
Finished setting up the filters and other than getting ‘low Batt’ indication
now and again all appears to be well.
Fitted the KAF2 and set up the clock, that taxed my grey cell but managed it in
the end.
Just need to give it an on air test and that’s it, sorted.
Just want to thank Dave and Don for their help in getting me to this point.
 Thanks very much

Re: [Elecraft] Antennas and Aesthetics

2021-12-20 Thread Morgan Bailey
Years ago...about 30, I had 2 ele 40, th7 and th5 and Higain Hightower and
double extended zepp ladder line fed cut for 40 which I used for 160-40.
Jobs change and that really changes one's life. I started traveling and as
such could no longer maintain the 3 towers so down it came all the radios
antennas and towers were sold. 23 years later, only being home for 1 month
a year, I finally retired. In the meantime, we sold the 2 story house on
the highest point in the city, and bought a ranch about 300 feet lower
surrounded by trees and hills with no view of the horizon in any direction
from the ground. Well a man has got to have something to do. My wife spent
disposable income on remodeling the house room to room. New kitchen, 3 new
bathrooms, walls were moved or taken down and space opened up. Everytime I
came home for a weekend, something had changed. And of course, each room
needed new furniture. Upon retiring, I told her I was putting up a tower. I
bought a Tashian 52 footer with a motor, and the arguments began...which
later changed to many heated discussions. Finally, a compromise was made. I
told her, I was perfectly content with not having ham radio with towers and
that I was going to buy a new $18,000 motorcycle and I would come home
maybe 6 months a year. I started getting my bike ready for trade in and she
started softening up after a few road trips when I was gone for a few days.
Then I went to Alaska for 21 days and 10,000 miles solo on my bike. I did
not miss the radio at all. It was a great time. When I got back she agreed
to compromise, especially when she saw me maping out 4 corners, Nova
Scotia, PEI, Iceland and Europe. A compromise was quickly made. I put up a
tower and bracketed it to the house. All approved by the city engineer and
building permits were obtained. I have a 38 foot Rohn 45G tower with
Navassa 5 antenna and an inverted L/vertical in the backyard for 160/80/40.
The entire antenna farm is 68 linear feet. As I have gotten older that is
all that I want and want to maintain. It is a pretty bombproof setup and is
easy to climb. During contests I put up other antennas for experimentation
in the front yard. I take them down after the contest. If I get complaints,
I just go out to the garage and start the motorcycle for a few minutes and
that pretty much ends the conversation.

I wish you well in your antenna endeavors. LOL!

I'm partial to the Kev-Flex kevlar core wire sold by Dave Cripe Nm0s. It's
small in diameter, wicked strong, and the PVC jacket is slick as snot on a
doorknob. I but mine from him on eBay. He usually sells it in 75 foot
lengths, but if you want a longer piece, just drop a note in the order and
he'll leave multiple lengths in one piece.

I was using the Coghlan’s laundy reels, but it took a long time to wind up the
wire, they would bind (not smooth turning), and would pop open when dropped.

Now I use the Midi Winders from SOTAbeams. Wind the wire on in a figue-8, no
kinks and quck to get on and off. SOTAbeams makes three sizes. The Midi Winders
are the same length as my KX3.

No. See my post in this thread about resonance.

BTW -- I strongly agree that clamp-ons should be secured with a ty-wrap.
And something I missed the first time around, but corrected in the
latest version of RFI-Ham is that turns must go though the core in
sequence. Out of sequence turns cancel in-sequence turns. Learned this
from some measurements.

Hi,

Purchase some FT240-31 ferrite cores,
(https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1912768.pdf), and wind at least 5
turns of each cable going to, or from, the computer through the ferrite.

I have several of these, and they stopped ALL of my RFI issues with my
computer, and with a weather station I have as well.

Shop around looking for the best price, some folks are asking 10 bucks
for one of these, others are asking 5 bucks...  I use Newark, and
Digikey as my goto places.

Also look to K9YC's site, for more information on how to make the
chokes...

Re: [Elecraft] RFIth

2021-12-20 Thread David Herring
Even when properly sized, as an added insurance policy, I run a zip tie around
the perimeter of the clamp-on and cinch it down tight to ensure that the two
halves are in solid contact with each other. It may not be a problem, but just
in case there is any play or give in the plastic snap and enclosure, this added
step would address that.

[Elecraft] Kat500 Firmware

2021-12-20 Thread Richard Gilley
Hi,
Having difficulty loading latest version of the Kat500 utility. The
version I have is 01.75, the utility indicates that 2.05 is available. However
the new version does not load but the message “ Input hex file is corrupt,
check sum is not zero”

I have the same issue attempting to load a Mac and Linux.

Perhaps 2.05 is not available? Or is there a fix I am not aware of, or perhaps
it is not necessary to upgrade?

Thank you for your interest. Help would be appreciated.

Pete,

Yes. You either have to have lots of them, or you need to get bigger ones and
run multiple turns through them. Also get the right “mix” for the frequency
range in question. Type 31 is pretty good for HF.

Not an expert, but studied http://k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf
, http://k9yc.com/RXChokesTransformers.pdf
,
http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf
and others at http://k9yc.com/publish.htm . There
is a wealth of information there, available for free.

The KAT500 Utility software is v1.21.9.15. Use it to download and install the
KAT500 v02.05 firmware.

Have you tried under Windows?

It's always worked perfectly for me.

[Elecraft] Kat500 Firmwar

2021-12-20 Thread Bob McGraw

Richard et al:

Just checked my KAT500 and it had V1.75 installed.  Then with the KAT500
Utility, version 1.21.9.15, I did download the firmware from the
Elecraft site and install V2.05 into my KAT500.   I saw no issues.
Running a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit computer.

That's right, sort of. But it misses the principle of how ferrite chokes
work. It's NOT the inductance, it's the resonance formed by the parallel
resonant circuit of series inductance and resistance coupled from the
core with stray (parasitic) capacitance of the winding. Choking action
is provided by the resistance associated with that parallel resonance.
The most useful chokes are those with a broad, low Q resonance. THAT'S
what is so special about the #31 mix, which combines the resonance of
the winding with a dimensional resonance within the core. OTs among us
will remember stagger-tuned IFs. Same principle.

k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf includes a tutorial discussion of this, so I won't
repeat it here.

Re: [Elecraft] RFIth

2021-12-20 Thread Buck K4IA
The impedance increases with the square of the turns.  2 turns = 4 times
the impedance.  It would take 4 chokes in series to equal one choke with
2 turns.  A "turn" is one pass through the middle.  More turns is better
until we get to very large chokes where the inter-coil capacitance
lowers the impedance.

I suggest checking 17 through 10 meters today. Quite a nice opening. Lots of

Re: [Elecraft] Best Portable Wire

2021-12-20 Thread email

I have been using a couple of "things"...

First see:
https://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-Camp-Laundry-Reel-21-Foot/dp/B001QBZM4Q/ref=sr_1_29?crid=3GJ5K4I006OGB=camping+clothesline=1640011049=camping+clothesline%2Caps%2C109=8-29
as a wire winder.

I use 24ga Teflon wire.  The copper strands are silver plated, with a
banana plug attached.  I have been using the winder + Teflon wire for
many years.  Works great.

For my 135' ladderline fed dipole, I use 24ga silver plated wire that is
(I think) nylon coated.  I picked it out of the "junk box" (trash) at
work YEARS ago.  The closest replacement would be Teflon wire.  The
silver plating makes for GREAT conduction.

Otherwise, I would use Wireman stealth wire either 26ga or 18ga.

[Elecraft] Antennas and Aesthetics

2021-12-20 Thread edauer
Here's another, utterly impractical, solution:

When my wife and I built our weekend home in the Colorado mountains we chose
the site for its natural beauty. Antennas are unnatural. I was content
with having only dipoles and Vees, but even they spoiled the view. So,
every time we were at the house and I wanted to operate, I would raise them
up. When done, I lowered them, leaving the supporting ropes dangling
against their trees with a snap-bolt on each rope's end. The dipoles
themselves -- including a multi-band for 10-15-20 and, at the time, Vees for
40 and 80 -- were rolled up, the coax feed lines were disconnected from the
sockets under the deck of the house, and it was all put away out of sight.

I no longer do that, and haven't in recent years given age and a bad
shoulder. But during the first few years I learned how to deploy and store
my farm in minutes.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI

2021-12-20 Thread Dave

Also look to K9YC's site, for more information on how to make the chokes...

port, and then re-selecting the original correct com port.

I am grounded to a 10' ground rod about 8 ft. from the station via 2"
copper strap. I did install ferrite beads on the USB cables at the back
of the PC as well as on the power cord, and this has reduced the
frequency of occurrence, but I would like to eliminate it altogether.

Any other ideas and suggestions would be most appreciated!

Re: [Elecraft] Net times & frequencies?

2021-12-20 Thread Bill Frantz
It should be noted that the SSB 80M net has had some issues
fitting in. We share a frequency with a net that's been active
for over 35 years which runs on local (daylight savings) time.
So we are at 0100z during the summer and 0200z during the
winter. Yesterday, we had a lot of interference from stations on
3.774 and moved to 3.783 which was open. If you want to check
into that gabfest, look around. Or let any of the net controls
know you are planning to checkin by Sunday morning and we will
try to find you, either on-air or on-line, to get you to the net.

Snowy,

Make sure the switch on the Control Board is in the INT position.
If using a battery, it may have a low voltage - it must be higher than
10.5 volts.

Well, it seems it does both , sends (Hybrid) to a server; and sends OTA

This morning they were sending; I was rx'ing. I could hear the transmission
over the K3.
Yet they guided me to a setting to put in the free, and original one, server
over the internet.

And just now, I tested the length of time it took to send a pict of my 80m NVIS
DP at ten feet above ground.

Took about 70 seconds. And I know I was sending over the air as the watt-meter
was telling me so.

So that's weird!. why the program was designed to to both I dunno. But it
surely does.

I have Yoniq too.

many thanks for the reply and help.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and EasyPal program ?

2021-12-20 Thread Gwen Patton
Sounds like a slow-scan TV program, but it's not. You upload the picture to
a server, then send the URL over the air for the other person to click on.
It has been around for a while, and there were claims it violated the
"pecuniary interest" clause in the regulations, but the hams don't get
money for it, so I don't think that's strictly so. I don't see any reason
why you couldn't use it, but I think it's more fun to use actual Slow-Scan
TV programs.

You can get MMSSTV, a venerable and last I heard, functional program.
https://hamsoft.ca/pages/mmsstv.php for free.

You can also get an SSTV program that ARRL links to, called Yoniq, a new
version of MMSSTV, which is also free.
http://www.arrl.org/news/new-sstv-software-now-available

This is yet another Internet/Amateur Radio fusion thing. I probably
wouldn't use it, though I do use a ThumbDV to access DMR, DStar, and Fusion
via my home computer and network. So I can't say anything bad about it
without hanging the "hypocrite" sign around my neck. hi hi
