Re: [Emc-users] Various problems with boards, drivers, modules, Linices, etc.

2008-11-07 Thread Mark Cason
  Perhaps a couple of reference designs of "tried and true" hardware
would be helpful?
  One for beginners, made up of simple, and cheap hardware. Another for
more experienced people, that need the speed/power of a more advanced
system.

  There is no one single place on the wiki, that says what hardware
combinations work well together. There are just a couple of lists of
what could be used, and a few pieces of hardware known not to work, as
well as some latency tests done on a few motherboards.

  This does not have to be a exhaustive list either, just a "If you use
this hardware, you will minimize your problems, and there are people
that have experience with it" type of list.

  An example may be: a mini-itx motherboard with a certain set of
settings, a xylotex driver board, a 10 amp gold brick (Acopian),
Oriental Motor steppers, etc... This is just an example, not what I am
putting together.

  Some of the people I have worked with, have a want for something, and
they can do the work, they just don't have all of the computer skills
(esp. not linux skills), and just want a detailed set of step by step
build instructions. (put bolt "A" in hole "B" type of instructions)

Re: [Emc-users] Various problems with boards, drivers, modules, Linices, etc.

2008-11-07 Thread Kent A. Reed
Gentle persons:

In a recent response to a disgruntled user trying to get a new-model
Mesa Electronics board working with EMC2 and servo drives, Peter Wallace
made a profound remark that characterizes many of the email storms I
seen over the past several years.

Peter said "The newness of the driver also means that you have the
disadvantage that there are few people with 7I43s using Hostmot2 to
compare notes with."

Substitute appropriate nouns for "7I43" and "Hostmot2" and this sentence
expresses the problem I've seen on many boards and email lists. Although
EMC2 and gnu/Linux make us all birds of a feather on this list, we have
each of us created a variation on a theme. When problems occur, they
may or may not be obvious to others, even to a guru. The problem getting
a particular cellular technology modem working with Ubuntu is another
example.

I find the principal value of this particular list is not just that (1)
its participants are ready willing and able to come forward with
suggestions, pointers, personal experiences, as well as do
extracurricular work; and not just that (2) its participants span a
tremendous range of hardware and software experiences so that their
responses are often homeruns on the first swing (apologies to the
non-baseball fans); but also that (3) its participants are very frank
about what they know, what they're pretty sure they know, and what
they're sure they don't know. Swings-and-misses are often converted into
homeruns because the participants fill in the missing bits in each
other's responses.

There are lots of lists and boards out there when every newbie question
gets a dozen independent responses from presumptive experts who are
condescending, cryptic, and wrong. They declaim rather than debate. I
can't understand what motivates them to respond at all. They remind me
of the old Saturday Night Live news sketches where Dan Aykroyd always
prefaced his response to his co-anchor Jane Curtin with "Jane, you
ignorant slut." If I were just starting out with a nontrivial computer
application instead of building on 47 years of computing experience on
everything from mainframes (including analog!) to supers to minis to
micros, their responses would make me totally despair of ever being able
to get something to work.

So, to all you regular participants in EMC-USERS, I tip my hat.

To all you who feel you just can't get the hang of it, keep at it. We've
all been there and we want to see you succeed too (besides, there's a
good chance we'll learn something from you too).

Regards,
Kent

Re: [Emc-users] kinematics

2008-11-07 Thread Jeff Epler
You should write a kinematics module which describes your machine, and
use it instead of trivkins.

http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/motion_kinematics.html

A kinematics module is implemented as a component. These are usually
compiled and installed by the "comp" program, though you can do it by
listing them in certain Makefieles or Submakefiles.

http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?ContributedComponents#How_to_compile_and_install_a_component

For instance, if you write the file 'ygdan.c' with the functions listed
at
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/motion_kinematics.html#r1_4
you can compile and install it with
sudo comp --install ygdan.c
and then specify
loadrt ygdan
before
loadrt motion ...
in your hal files.

I think this is based on the "last" offset between home and a work
coordinate. It would be in your x.var file.
Since your home offset is zero, then it should appear as 8.5202 in that
file, unless your machine is defined in a different unit (mm vs inches)
hat the default display units.

[Emc-users] kinematics

2008-11-07 Thread ygdan1001
 hello, everyone!
 I do a model with Matlab and SimulationX, analyzing its kinematics, and next
is designing a control sysytem with EMC2, then, what should i do between EMC2
and the model? Should i put the model into the EMC2 to produce G code to analog
the cutting feed? or i just should change the kinematic models, such as the
makefile file and the trivkins.c file?
i am still confusing, and cann't understand it clearly. So i hope someone can
tell me even an overview.
Thanks a lot!

Sounds like a good Idea.

To Robert Acosta: If you cannot get the 7I43 working in your application, Mesa
will replace it with a 5I20 card at no charge. (The 5I20 has drivers and
firmware that have been supported for at least a couple of years by EMC2)

Thats more than a little unfair. We know our boards and their firmware inside
and out.

We (Mesa) are _not_ experts on EMC, the HostMot2 driver, or HAL setup issues.
That is why you were referred to the EMC list, where people with more
experience in these areas can help you.

Also HostMot2 driver support is very new, requiring that you update your EMC2
installation to the latest (trunk) version. The newness of the driver also
means that you have the disadvantage that there are few people with 7I43s
using Hostmot2 to compare notes with.

The firmware in the 7I43 is new as well, and although we have tested
compatibility with many parallel ports, there may still be EPP issues here
that need to be addressed. Without exact descriptions of the problems, error
messages, etc there is little we can do to improve comptibility.

What I have not seen from you is detailed information about:

   What version of EMC you are using

   What your HAL file looks like

   What kind of error messages you have

Is that what you have? Do you have the Kitamura 1000 controls

The motors are AC servos with encoders. The encoders go to

The servo driver probably supports pulse, analog velocity, and

The manuals with mine included block level diagrams with
cable and connector designations, but no actual schematic.

We'll all be happy to help, i'm sure, but we need something more to go
in than "error this and error that".

What is your setup, what did you try, and what happened? Be specific.
Cut-and-paste information is better than rephrasing it in your own words.

There *are* HAL config files that make servos work on the 7i43. All we
have is in the tree. configs/hostmot2.

But there (apparently) are no HAL files that make your machine work.
You'll have to either help us help you, or do it yourself.

  Ok, Now we have something. The computer recognizes the card, the
driver is initialized, and wvdial found it. Unfortunately, this is also
where I was when I realized I had to compile a new driver for my card.

  Your card, and my card, (and other similar cards) have the same
problem. The card is both a wireless Internet card (I am loathe to call
this a modem, as it does not modulate/demodulate a signal, it just
relays them, same as a network card), and also the internal storage for
the windows driver is set up as a pseudo cdrom drive.
  The cdrom drive gets set up first, and then the windows driver has to
switch it over to use the wireless portion. They both have seperate USB
settings, so that the windows driver knows when it has been set up
correctly.

  You will need to compile a new driver, and possibly install additional
software to do this. Also, you will have to create a custom udev script
to get all of this set up.

  Without access to your hardware, I won't be able to help much, as it
took me two days of compiling, and writing test scripts, to get mine
working. If you still want to do this, I will try to help. I won't be
online much until after tuesday, as I have some traveling to do.

  Right now, it is looking like setting up Internet Connection Sharing
in windows, and setting up a small network, will be the easiest thing to
do. Synaptics will work without a internet connection, but you will
have to set up a local repository somewhere on your network anyway, and
you will have to mirror a remote repository to be able to stay updated.
The last option, is to just d/l the packages you want onto your windows
box, and use dpkg to install them.

  All of these items have a pretty steep learning curve, beyond the
scope of this forum. I am not saying don't ask, just that there are
other forums that are better suited for asking general Linux questions.

  ICS in windows is a point/click interface, that has been written for
even the (UMM... PC word here) 'least experienced' user to use.
Networking can be as simple as a crossover cable attached between the
two computers, or (preferably) a hub/switch/wireless box and the
necessary cables.

If you still need more help the best thing you could do is VERY
clearly describe your situation and the current problems. The best
way to do this would be:

1. Make your entire configuration available online somewhere, or tar
it up and attach it to your next message

2. Say what version of the software you are using and what errors you
are getting.

Support for this card is very new and it's possible all the bugs are
not worked out yet. If you do not have the time or patience for
helping with that, there are other products from several different
manufacturers, including Mesa, that are very stable and are in daily
use on many machines. Maybe one of those would be a better fit for
you?

If you want to help work out any remaining problems with the card,
you ought to build TRUNK and test with that. Then you can work with
Seb closely to iron things out. Here are the instructions for that.

Hello John

Yes I did - didn't find it very useful. What's more there are no FAQ's on
that site it links you to other sites, most of which are just selling their
wares.

I have been on quite a few sites regarding my modem Huawei E220 (Vodacom in
SA) and one important fact is the Vodacom download for Ubuntu (to make it
work) does not work with Ubuntu8.04 - works with earlier versions but not
8.04. There's a thing.

I've also looked on the Ubuntu site 100,s of "E220 don't work on Ubuntu8.04"
Seems after a few interchanges some just give up. Most of the instructions
don't work. Many reasons.
One guy however (and definitely not a computer fundy) has written a really
good "How to .." it is very easy to understand and follow. One more
thing, he wrote it in a chronological order, now that's the way to do it.

I went on the Ubuntu forum with my partition problem nearly two weeks ago,
still there unsolved, had quite a few responses, although you have keep on
reminding them, but it is still there unsolved. It was solved here (on this
forum) mainly by Jon Elson not because he knows more than them (although he
may) but because he CARES.
So there ends to day lesson - gosh I feel better.

Best wishes
Dave

Those are the same motors as the Kitamura MyCenter 0 here.
Is that what you have? Do you have the Kitamura 1000 controls

The motors are AC servos with encoders. The encoders go to
the servo amp, which makes a copy of them to send on the
the CNC controller. The encoders are high resolution, probably
2000 line, 8000 count.

The servo driver probably supports pulse, analog velocity, and
analog torque commands. I think this machine uses analog
but don't have a guess if it is velocity or torque.

The manuals with mine included block level diagrams with
cable and connector designations, but no actual schematic.

I have been trying to do something with this crappy card and all i get
is error this, error that, no clear info, no clear manuals, i have asked
for help and i have 3 different versions of what should i do, and...
none has worked.
Mesa sends me to EMC2 Boards, since it looks they have not a clue on how
to make their own board work.
Here on my country, we are 2 people having the same issue, and seeking
info. by dfferent ways, but... nothing.

I have read some messages about SUCCESS from Peter C. Wallace, Sebastian
Kuzminsky and Ted Hyde, but i cant' follow them, because it seems i have
not received some of their messages. Also it seems they are using
different commands than the ones i've been told to use...¿?

So please, is there anyone who has a WORKING hal file for this board for
use with servos?, i need to make this thing work or else i'll throw it
away and start with origami.

Sorry for this, people you have been very kind but i'm really tired of
getting to nowhere.

Depends - you don't say which kind of offset it turns out it was. If
it was G54, you set it with touch off or G10 L2 P1 Z... If it was
G92, you set it with G92.

You have a work offset or a G92 offset.

To clear the work offset, Machine / Zero coordinate system / G54 (or
home and then Touch Off zero) and then be sure to read about "Touch
Off" in the user manual since you will have to understand how to use
work offsets now that you have homing. Looks like sections 2.2.1 and
2.3.4.1 are relevant although a little lean.

To clear a G92 offset, program G92.1 in MDI. (In the upcoming EMC2.3
you will be able to clear G92 offsets in the Machine/Zero... menu
also.)

I'd guess that it's in the var file that is being read at startup.
Could be a g92 or one of the coordinate offset systems. The var file
contents are described in the user handbook in the coordinate systems
chapter.

I don't remember much about it but the AXIS interface system can also be
setup to remember last position between runs for those who don't have
home switches. I wouldn't think this would be the case but others would
have to figure that out.

EMC2 is configured by the .ini file which then calls other configuration
files.

http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html//config_ini_config.html

Generally, the configuration files are in a directory under the machine
configuration name, such as:

/home/your_username/emc2/config_name/...

The .ini file will have the acceleration settings, and will look like
this...

"
[TRAJ]
AXES =  3
COORDINATES =   X Y Z
HOME =  0 0 0
LINEAR_UNITS =  0.03937007874016
ANGULAR_UNITS = 1.0
CYCLE_TIME =0.010
DEFAULT_VELOCITY =  0.50
# units/second
MAX_VELOCITY =  4.0
# units/second
DEFAULT_ACCELERATION =  3.0<---<<<
# units/second^2
MAX_ACCELERATION =  7.0<---<<<
# units/second^2
PROBE_INDEX =   0
PROBE_POLARITY =1
POSITION_FILE = position.txt

# Axes sections ---

# First axis
[AXIS_0]
TYPE =  LINEAR
UNITS = 0.03937007874016
HOME =  0.000
MAX_VELOCITY =  3.0
MAX_ACCELERATION =  6.0<---<<<
PID_MAX_VEL =   100
BACKLASH =  0.000

...

FF1 =  0.25
FF2 =  0.002

# Second axis
[AXIS_1]
...
"

I don't recall seeing a provision for a radial acceleration. It may be
calculated from the axes settings. If you are comfortable with C, you
may be able to read the source code to see how motion is handled.

There are also 'info' files which are similar, although to me 'info' is
