Re: [Emc-users] M66 digital input control?

2008-12-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The way I interpret the wiki and the manual is that the command waits
for the input only as long as the Q timer is set for. This works well
for error handling but for a machine interface I would want it to wait
w/o error handling.
Is there a way to test this in one of the simulations. I don't have a
working system in front of me right now to test it. I am not sure how I
would simulate the input with out hardware?

Thanks,
Mike

If that doesn't work like that, then you probably need a large Q number.

Looks like you can have up to 64 digital ins/outs without
recompiling. To set the number higher than 4 (the default), add
num_dio=XX or num_aio=XX to your loadrt emcmot command.

[Emc-users] EMC2 on a usb thumb drive

2008-12-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Has anyone done this?

I have a usb thumb drive with the latest .iso live cd installed on it.
It boots but I can't seem to make it save settings and changes... I got
as far as creating two partitions.. one with the image on it and the
other empty formatted ext2 with the name casper-rw. It's a 2 gig
drive. When I boot off the drive it automatically mounts the 2nd
partition casper-rw.

I used the instructions from this link:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent

Also, when I don't boot off the drive I can write to it.

After reading some threads it looks like the challenging part is getting
the drive to boot and the partitions setup. I think I have gotten that
far. Not sure if it's correct but it looks like it is.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

It is because the system thinks it really IS a CD, and you can't write
 to a CD.
You may need two pen drives. One holds the iso, the other becomes the
hard drive for EMC2/Ubuntu to be installed to.
Maybe you can do this with the separate partitions, it depends on the
 coding in the install scripts.

Thanks to Dave, John Wayne for the responses. It was helpful.
A good option would be to fit a sander on the CNC machine. That will

I will also see if a simple bead-blasting wont do the job.

That would be better, as the stock nut with the spring retaining clip is

[Emc-users] Isel/Kress

2008-11-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
One of my Isel macjines (a small Davinci) uses a Kress Spindle.
I contacted Isel USA to find out what Collets they use as I want to
replacce some of mine.
They said ER25.

Well After buying ER25 set of 15, it is NOT the same as what came with
my Isel.
I then bought ER11 and ER16 sets, and neither of those asre remotely the
same as what I have bought with my Isel.

I am starting to think that they gave me the wrong info and that maybe
the Kress Spindle uses DIN Collets.

Before I spend another $1000 on the wrong collets, and since Isel USA
seemingly have no clue of customer service, or knowledge of their own
products they distribute, I am wondering of anyone here can help me to
try and ID the collets I have or maybe help me to convert my cress to
take ER collets.

Thanks

The Kress collets are proprietary and not a standard type as far as I
know? I just bought mine from my supplier.

There's a list here with the full range.

Re: [Emc-users] Text to Gcode

2008-11-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I cannot use EMC as it does not support my Isel's Gcode.
All my work is 2-dimensional so i can program very quickly writing
directly in GCODE and just sending the file to the ISEL.
I would like to use EMC of course, but it doesnt support ISEL.

I just dont like to program fonts...aarggh, therefore I want to see if
there isn't something that can generate Truetype like fonts of variable
size.
The program you mentioned unfortunately fails to run after compilation.

Thanks Lawrence.
I missed the Fontfile import for Engrave11.
I am pretty sure that will work if I can use fonts from Linux fontservers.

How do you compile a Python program again?

[Emc-users] Getting Started with the Latest EMC2

I have just installed the latest EMC2 with Ubuntu 8.01. To get an Internet

The instructions say to first install this using the Synaptic Package Manager
and then to run it and locate my driver .inf file.

Problem: Synaptic Package Manager cannot find the ndisgtk package to install it.

Any suggestions

I am hoping that I can get some advice from those of you that have done
large scale retrofits of bigger machines. We have a Cincinnati Millicron
with tool changer that we are retrofitting with EMC2.

What motion control cards have you had good success with? Right now I am
leaning toward the Motenc-lite.

How are you handling the 5/24 volt transition between computer and machine?
Are the Motenc breakout boards good enough or is OPTO22 the only way to go?

How are you handling the massive number of I/O? I have something like 116
in and 38 out digital. I don't think I want to use parports. Is there a
generic large digital I/O PCI board I am not finding?

Has anyone done much modification to AXIS to make it more compatible with
existing physical control panels? Removing duplicate buttons and sliders
from AXIS, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Emc-users] Modbus RS-485 Transceiver

2008-02-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sure this is also correct, but if you run realtime equipment through
485 it is not worth it to run unisolated interfaces.
It takes one voltage glitch or an inductive discharge close by or a
lightning strike far away or a charge buildup on the guard to induce
current in ground loops which are present in non-isolated converters.
It is not worth your workpiece missing a critical command in realtime.

If you use it for terminal programs like networking etc with error
correction, fine then it is not an issue, but for real-time, I will
never do that. Just one glitch and the workpiece is destroyed.

My company was one of the first to use RS485 in specific industries
back in 1988 with massive multi drop systems. We built a lot and learnt
a lot and see folks making the same mistakes we encountered and
resolved almost 20 years back.

You have a ground loop, it is just a matter of time.

Isolation is commonly used to deal
with large common mode differentials. While that can blow a 485
tranciever it does not happen alot unless there are vey long cable runs
or the cable runs between buildings. When running 485 for distances of
a few hundred feet connecting equipment powered off the same mains
transformer it's unlikely that enough differential will occur, but a
quick check with a voltmeter before connecting equipment is always a
good idea.

  So both comments are correct.In
many cases 485 will run justfine without isolators, but some
applications definitely require isolation. I build 485 isolators, but
they are rarely tested to their limits.Often the isolation is more of
an insurance policy-it ensures that a single device cannot takedown an
entire network segment.

[Emc-users] Latency issue

2007-11-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all,

I'm new to this group and also to EMC.

I have just succesfully installed Ubuntu 6.0.6 and EMC and updated it to 2.2
without problems.

When I tried to configure EMC however, I was confronted to the latency issue
(close to 100 uS) mentioned in the docuentation, related to MSI boards.

My computer is a laptop Dell C610 Pentium III 1Ghz. I'm not sure what kind of
board or chipset it uses but it looks like if I'm suffering exactely this
issue, as when I run the latency test, the numbers are low (in the region of 10
uS) but aproximately every 64 seconds, it has a pick which tales latency up to
close 100 uS as mentioned.

I have followed the directions I got from linuxcnc.org page which includes
replacing the binary module rtai_smi.ko and modify rtapi_conf, but when I tray
to save this file with the changes done, I'm not permited to save it as it is
read only and apparently, I have no permisions.

Is someone there who can direct me on how to get arround this barrier?. May be
the solution is simple, but I have to mention that I'm also new to Linux.

Thanks in advance.
Jesus

[Emc-users] 'Sherline' EMC Interface on Ubuntu 6.06?

[Emc-users] Homing - zeroing - touch off

2007-09-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks for your comments Andy but I can't see anything wrong in my ini
file and still can't understand what is going on. The problem I was
describing of not being able to reliably set zero home positions occurs
when I first switch the machines on. For instance, I just turned on to
set up a new job and the readings on the axes display in AXIS were - X
0.000, Y -0.000, Z -10.418 and A 737.592
I then issued a G92 X0.000 Y0.000 Z0.000 A0.000 in the MDI and all the
axis readings then went to 0.000 - good.
Then I hit the home button on each axis and they all showed the home
icon with the displayed figures staying at 0.000
Now I jogged to X 2.752 Y 2.279 Z2.208 A -10.131 and then tried to
'touch off' each axis, setting each one to 0.000 in the touch off box.
The readings then immediately went to X 12.842 Y -5.931 Z 4.645 A -56.156 !
The figures for the X and Y axis I can partly understand in that they
were the positions I jogged to on a previous job but why the machine
remembered them and went to them rather than the 0.000 I commanded I
don't know. The figures for the Z and A axes are a total mystery and
mean nothing to me at all.
I have found that if I repeat the G92, home, then touch off about 3
times, the axes figures will settle at 0.000 after touching off but I
don't know why..
The only EMC file I altered is the ini file which is listed below and
seems innocuous to me. Can anyone offer any enlightenment please??

[Emc-users] Homing - zeroing - touch off

2007-09-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

I'm a bit confused I'm running EMC 2.1.7 with a simple stepper setup
and, at the moment, no home or limit switches set up. So, I set the
material on the machine and then want to zero EMC at some point on this
material. From the literature I assumed that I should go to the AXIS
manual screen, jog to the position I want and hit the 'Touch Off' button
to set the position as far as software is concerned to zero or some
other chosen figure - it doesn't seem to work or, at least, not for
all axes which seems strange. When I do this, a couple of the axes will
show 0.000 on the screen but the other two will change to some other
figure that I can't understand like -3.234 or 24.554 or something -
different from the figure they were at but not zero or the commanded
figure. Also, when I hit the 'Home' button on this manual screen, some
of the axes will just dhow the home symbol next to the displayed figure
but others will again change their figures. I have been setting the
position by issuing a G92 command for each axis but, if I then hit the
'home' button again, the figure will change and I have to do it all
again. Is it me or is there a problem with my ini files or the program?
I believe someone also mentioned being able to set axes to zero with a
'shift-home' command from the keyboard but this doesn't seem to do
anything on my setup. Maybe I just don't understand what should be
happening - could someone enlighten me please?

[Emc-users] Curve in place of square edges...

2007-08-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have also noticed a slightly similar thing but in a different context.
I have a script in which a cut is made by the Y axis then this returns
by means of a G0 and the work is turned by the A axis. The A axis always
starts to move just before the Y axis stops. This is on a basic stepper
machine and I am using the latest EMC2-Ubuntu iso release now - 2.1.6.
Sorry Ray, didn't mean to break it just yet!!! ;-} lol

Chris,

How about putting the hard drive from the bad machine into the good
machine and trying to install onto it there? The other thing would be to
get hold of a low level disk repair program and run it on the disk from
the suspect machine. If you install the Linux as the only OS on the
machine it should reformat the whole disk and probably get rid of any
problems generated on there by windoze.

Ahh, I think your do while need to be matching o words.

Thanks Jeff Gene,

I modified the script as below but now I'm back to one of the original
problems - it won't load because it says near line 49 .. unknown
word where unary operation could be (Line 49 is my line numbered
N0400). This is at the call to the first subroutine, o100, and the only
way I could clear it before was to take out the o100 before the endsub -
but then the program wouldn't run. I tried isolating the problem by the
rather crude method of simply temporarily deleting each line of code in
turn to see if the error would clear or at least move on to the next
error and this was how I identified the endsub line number to be a
problem, however, I've just tried the same again and it has no effect. -
now I'm stuck again although there may be just a glimmer of light from
Gene's comment - is the error that the do/while loop in the main part of
the program should be numbered differently and have both lines preceded
by an Oxxx number? If so would that then be another subroutine which
would need calling from a main program consisting just of calls? Boy,
this stuff is fussy!!

[Emc-users] Proglem with EMC script - understanding error message

2007-08-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

While I have been playing around with EMC since its invention, I have
only recently started to use it seriously as I've only recently finished
(as though it will ever be 'finished') a little cnc milling machine for
making parts for the antique watches I restore and other miniature
parts. I have been trying to work out a 'universal' script to allow me
to mill tiny pinions but I've hit a problem in that it is giving me an
error message I don't understand - I do wish that the developers of EMC
would address the understandability of the various error messages to we
simple users

The machine is set up to use axes XYZA in metric with the 'A' axis set
parallel to the 'Y' axis in this case so that the end of the work is
clearly visible. The finished pinion OD is 1.40mm and it has 5 leaves of
cycloidal profile - radial flanks with semicircular tips. The intention
of the script is to use a miniature slitting saw 0.09mm thick to cut
first one flank of each leaf, then the other flank and then to round
over each side of the tips by taking cuts at 10 degree increments. I
would ideally have liked to work out a way to make the tips continuously
rounded but I don't seem to be able to find a way to do this over the
length of the pinion - i.e. I could do it by sending the X, Z and A axes
to a finishing point simultaneously and produce a rounded surface at one
point on the length of the pinion but this would then have to be
repeated many times to get a continuous edge. Anyway, here is the
script... the error message I am getting is near line 2 unknown
word where unary operation could be - does this refer to line 2 of the
script i.e. a problem amongst the variables, or is it a problem with
line 0200 of the part of the script that runs and why does it say that a
'unary operation 'could' be there'? Any help would be very much
appreciated Ian

Re: [Emc-users] Proglem with EMC script - understanding error message

2007-08-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi again,

Thanks to everyone who responded to my earlier mailing. As a result and
after a considerable rewrite and correction I have now managed to get
the script to load - however, it does nothing!! When I hit 'R' or press
the play button, the screen flashes briefly and returns to the stop
state - the machine doesn't even twitch...
Do I have a problem in trying to run nested 'do - while' loops, its the
only thing I can think of that might do nothing. there are no error
messages displayed.
Here is the rewritten script - any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks.. Ian

[Emc-users] Floating Z (solenoid on PCB Mill) Hal configuration

2007-08-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In case anyone else has one of these PCB mills with the solenoid driven floating Z, I thought I would share my configuration changes. The premise I worked with was that if I could take the commanded Z position and convert it to a bit output to my solenoid relay I could use the standard drill and move codes with it. So I connected the Zpos-cmd and a constant "0" to a comparator and then routed that to the par-port. Now any commanded Z position 0 or greater results in the head up and any Z command less than 0 puts the head down. Here is what I did, let me know if it could use any adjustments, I am new to this hal thing.
In stepper_inch.ini I added a line for my new hal file:
HALFILE= solenoid_Z.hal
My new hal file solenoid_Z.hal contains:
loadrt blocks constant=1 comp=1
constant.0.value=0
newsig constcomp float
linksp constcomp comp.0.in1
linksp Zpos-cmd comp0.in0
newsig discrete_Z bit
linksp discrete_Z comp.0.out
linksp discrete_Z parport.0.pin-07-out
addf constant.0 servo-thread
addf comp.0 servo-thread
That's it. After a few syntax problems it worked. I am quite happy.
Have fun,

GCODE for XFIG?
Amazing. I havent used Xfig for about 8 years now, but can you giove me
some information about what kind of realistic cnc projects can be done
with Xfig?
I basically used xfig long ago to create eps drawings for publications.

[Emc-users] Isel Linux

2007-07-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I studied up the G-code of my Isel Machines and is now ready to write a
translator that can work with EMC pretty easily and finaly move
everything over to Linux, by means of the intermediate translator I wrote.
That part is sorted out.

The remaining task is to replace the Windows Cad program.
I am using BobCad at the moment on windows which is a truly *painful
application* and overly complicated CAD program riddled with ambiguity
and a workflow only the programmer understands.

My question is, is there a simple 2-d 3-d cad program with DXF or such
output I can feed into EMC for toolpath generation?

A CAD program I REALLY like is emachineshop as it is at last a 2-d
3-d cad program anyone can understand.
http://www.emachineshop.com/audio/07-menu-job-order-help/video.html;
Unfortunately it does not export any DXF and such so you must use it to
buy at emachineshop.

Is there any CAD similar and as clear to use available on Linux?
I just dont have the time and energy to fight through Autocad and even
worse, LinuxCad to do something simple in 2-D.
Emachineshop is about 100% a good match for what I am doing.

Thanks
Lrv.

I don't know if this is apropos, but...

I also have Bobcad/CAM 16.1, but rarely use it. Most of the
work I do is the simplest 2-D work cutting instrument panels and
such. So, I wrote a bunch of small programs that create the
G-code to do the most common things, like rectangular cutouts,
round cutouts, etc. I also have some that handle a hole circle
and grid of holes, and a table of arbitrary X-Y hole locations.
One input file, and it will generate spotting, drilling and
tapping programs for all the holes. So, I use this stuff far
more than cad/cam, because it is faster to create, and more
efficient to machine. Many of these have been ported over to
the "scripts" on EMC2, but I have them on my web site, too, at
http://jelinux.pico-systems.com/gcode.html

That is exactly what I do right now is using my own scripts where
objects such as odd circular forms and other shapes are created using
Pascal programs to generate the Isel g-code.
Scripts are absolutely great for repetitive jobs.

The problem though is that I need to make solid stock objects too with
limited 3-d features and it is great to have the cad-work/drawings for
that so I want to have those done from CAD side.

I quoted the wrong link for ems sorry.
Here is a good example of about exactly the complexity I do and Linux
cad I would like advice on to do similar.

EMC doesn't take DXF, it takes RS-274D, also known as G-code.
DXF is good to move a drawing from one CAD system to another,
but it leaves so much info out of the transfer that it causes a
number of problems.

I know that, but it is easy to use a dxf to G-code converter.

Hi Jerry, thanks a lot!!!
I would not have found that on my own at all and I watch linux CAD
systems constantly.
What a nice find!

I am sure going to try it out now.
What I really like is the MILL instruction along a predefined route.
That really simplifies things.
You basically just route a path with line segments and then say mill
alongh path after you give the bit size.
That is quite nice!

[Emc-users] Hal newbie question

2007-07-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,

Just joined the list and started looking seriously at EMC2.

I have read the user, install, and HAL guides and think I get the idea.

What I'm wondering is if there is a How To doc somewhere that gives a
real beginners look at setting up a stepper drive.

For instance, assuming one has a stepper with interface that can take step
and direction signals (and perhaps micro step), here's how to do a HAL
config with the parallel port to make the stepper move.

Thanks,
Mac
