The crash happened again yesterday and i have attached the output from top
during that crash. No major RAM eating going on, but the enlightenment process
was using between 61-65% cpu. And as per previous crashes, I could not kill -9
enlightenment, but was able to switch to a terminal, shut down the computer,
etc, whilst there was continuous flickering disk activity. I think it was
frozen bubble (!) that I was using when it crashed this time, but konqueror
was open.

How old is the version of frozen-bubble? I can recall specific
instances where it would lock up and really eat up cpu. I don't see
that anymore on later versions. I've even tried to reproduce it.

One other thing you might consider. It could be remotely possible that
our kill attempt hasn't had time to get to the process you're trying to
kill. I've seen attempts at trying to kill a process take a good while
when cpu usage is high.

If you can reproduce the problem, try killing frozen-bubble first. As
long as you're not running out of memory, just wait a while and see if
it eventually goes away.

I know that when I was having the problem with frozen-bubble, it was
very specific. This happened only in chain_reaction mode as follows:

1. A marble that I had just brought down was returning up (because of
the chain_reaction mode) and it was going to finish the marbles left.
2. I attempted to fire another marble whilst the aforementioned marble
was returning up.

Unless you've used the chain_reaction mode, you may not understand what
I've just said. Check it out though, it makes for a faster game. :)

hmm - no attachment. next time can u gdb attach to e and find out whats up - if
u can't kill -9 e - thats actualyl a kernel problem. kill -9 kilsl a process if
it likes it or not - it has no choice, UNLESS its stuck in a kernel syscall and
the kernel will not let it die - if e is eating 65% cpu then its strange u CANt
kill -9 - are u sure u were kill -9'ing the right PID?

Are you sure that it isn't X what hangs?

A few weeks ago I had a similar problem. It occurred directly
after xinit and wasn't reproducible. It hit me perhaps every
tenth time.

After the switch from xorg to xorg-snap it didn't happen again.

well thats mostly the kernel - e will use cpu when it needs it - as
much as it can get - then go back to idling waiting for something it
needs to do. your kernel will handle 5giving up the cpu to e and
takign it away as needed. e doesnt run threads or fork 1000's of
processes so its only 1 slot in your kernel's process table and thus
should have minimal impact in general - even if eating 100% cpu.

It's sweet. I would have suspected that I would have seen some
degradation because of the xdaliclock app, but if you think about, it's
still got 80% of the cpu to play with. :)

hmm - ok - sounds like a input device grab that's hung. if this happenes again
try:

Curious as to what is an expected amount of cpu/memory usage for E17.
Right now E is at 13.9% cpu, which is higher then any other wm I've
used, but usable. Is this a reasonable expectation?

Is there anyway to determine which cvs version has this problem? I've
not updated in a while, and really don't want to start seeing my box
lock up. Silly me, I'm running it on my development and main boxes.

13.9% - continuously? or just a peak rememebr when the widnowp
changes focus - u move somehting it will eat cpu to do the gfx
rendering, then calm down to very little after that. if you use
flame, draindrops, snow, other animations they consume cpu - even the
clock module consumes some cpu - on a very old/slow system it might
be possible it can consume 13% cpu for the clock. what do you have
running in e (like moduels - is there an animated bg, what theme
 etc.)

Ah, you nailed it on the head. I ran top in batch mode and it was
running from about 13-19%. Then I killed xdaliclock. :) Now it's
running at less than 1.5% :) Usually around 1-1.3%

With or without it (xdaliclock), I don't see much impact though.

xdaliclock!!! no wonder! e has to recalculate the dropshadow shapes all the
time - i mean i spent a lot of time optimsing that heavily, but... doing
realtime gaussian blurrs takes a bit of grunt.

With or without it (xdaliclock), I don't see much impact though.

well thats mostly the kernel - e will use cpu when it needs it - as much as it
can get - then go back to idling waiting for something it needs to do. your
kernel will handle 5giving up the cpu to e and takign it away as needed. e
doesnt run threads or fork 1000's of processes so its only 1 slot in your
kernel's process table and thus should have minimal impact in general - even if
eating 100% cpu.

Afraid so. Now, as the disk access thing hasn't been reported by the others,
it could be a different problem.

Whatever's going on isn't locking up the system, but is interfering with it
in a major way. When this happens:
* I can kill X and switch to a term and type into it, do standard operations,
but the process is slow because of the constant disk access. Also, the
terminal misses many keystrokes, presumably those which occur when the
process is performing some operation.
* I can bring X back up, but once again, very slow and consistently
interrupted.
* I can still and move the mouse, and last time it happened i was able to
manipulate the menus of the "Links" browser in an xterm with the mouse. I
cannot manipulate any GUI controls though, whether part of e or qt or gtk.

Re: [e-users] desktop freezing like in windows xp

2006-01-17 Thread Lachlan Gunn
I have had this problem with an nVidia Geforce4 MX400. The solution
was to disable renderaccel if you are using Composite.

I can report i have had this problem too - usually associated with Konqueror
or Kontact. An additional symptom is a continually flickering HD LED
thereafter until I do a reboot, and the enlightenment process is impossible
to kill -9 even after killing the X server. I will have to see if it has
anything to do with drag-and-drop now.

what - even kill -9 doesnt work?
