I grew up on a farm where we planted corn, logged trees for lumber, and shot deer because, despite great PR, they’re actually the vampires of the plant kingdom. I like good cars. I like fast cars. After a series of teenage and college cars that I thrashed within, and on one memorable occasion past, an inch of their lives, the first car that I ever purchased was a 1988 BMW 535is, the near-twin of the original, earth-shattering M5. Mine had been heavily massaged by world-famous BMW tuner Steve Dinan, and it was glorious. I then moved to London and entered a delightful, insane 100 horsepower motorcycle phase that featured a Honda VFR 800 and CBR 600, the latter of which left me in several pieces on the shore of Lake Geneva at the French-Swiss border during a truncated European adventure that averaged north of 80mph. Returning to America and to reality, I bought an Infiniti G35, the vastly more reliable Japanese reincarnation of the BMW 5 series, and then, moving into my family phase, an Acura MDX to haul the kids in 300 horsepower style. I think that I averaged about 19 miles per gallon for the two driving decades of 1997–2017, even including the motorcycles, which doesn’t make me particularly proud, because our planet is melting. Saving the planet is not something that I spend every waking hour thinking about, but I’ve got two kids under 10 years old, and I’d like this place to not actually fully melt during their lifetimes. As someone who puts a lot of miles on my car every year, I know that I’m part of the problem, and as a guy who builds technology for a living, I’d always imagined that technology would solve the problem. We will someday refer to the past ten years as the “lost hybrid decade,” when technology tripped all over its own shoelaces. The first hybrid to cause a big stir — the Toyota Prius — had the acceleration of worn-out rubber band, the handling of a Carnival cruise ship, and for all that misery, still only improved its planet-melting gas consumption from ~30 to ~45mpg. Its imitators, like the horrific Honda Civic Hybrid, which I was doomed to drive for several years after inheriting it from my wife’s ex-college car to my long-distance-commute slug, were even worse. Imagine my delight when I read about Chevy’s new all-electric Bolt, introduced in January of this year. Fast. Stylish. Amazing 238 mile range. $29,900 after federal incentives, and yet a practical hatchback with lots of interior room. It seemed like the perfect car to move into a more enlightened phase of my automotive existence. I ordered one of the very first ones made from my friend Derek at Tom Bell Chevrolet, and he delivered it on January 9th, 2017. Yesterday, it crossed 10,000 miles, and it’s the best car that I’ve ever owned. As my first electric car, I need to say a couple things about the whole electron lifestyle. The immediate, vivid impression is how smooth this car is. I’ve owned some fairly premium gas-powered cars where a lot of engineers put a lot of effort into twiddling the mechanical geometry of their moving parts, but no amount of human ingenuity can fully address the fact that several hundred pounds of metal are rotating, counter-rotating, reciprocating, springing, and vibrating in every gasoline car. The Bolt is perfectly smooth, a perfectly linear experience. It’s hard to describe in words, but it feels luxurious. Convenience is the other remarkable change. We installed a 220 volt charger on the side of our garage, and every night, I plug in the car, and every morning, it’s got a “full tank of gas” to go wherever we want in the whole metro area. Never being “low” and never needing an extra 10 minutes for a gas station stop is a delightful, unexpected benefit to going electric. But did I mention that this is the best car I’ve ever owned? The “electric” part is great, but this is a car. And I like cars. It is fast. How fast? 0–60 in 6.3 seconds fast. But it feels even faster, because from the very first foot of acceleration, it’s already pulling hard, because electric cars have 100% of their torque from zero RPM, unlike any gasoline car. But how fast is 0–60 in 6.3 seconds, really? Here’s a brief history of my 0–60 times plus two comparables: 1988 BMW M5 [ice], 6.4 sec, $48K. The fastest sedan in the world at that time. 2004 Infiniti G35 [ice] 6.1 sec, $33K. 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid [ice]. 11.8 sec, $23.9K. Like
[EVDL] EVLN: Shiny Hammer's Hope e-motorcycle makes iceheads drool r:170mi ts:75mph
http://bgr.com/2017/09/21/electric-motorcycle-inspired-by-iphone-porsche-pokemon/ This ‘Star Wars’-esque electric motorcycle was inspired by the iPhone September 21st, 2017 Mike Wehner [images https://boygeniusreport.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/screen-shot-2017-09-21-at-1-43-45-pm.png http://shinyhammer.fr/files/gimgs/38_img8317.jpg http://shinyhammer.fr/files/gimgs/38_img8384-copie.jpg ] Recently, the one-of-a-kind ExoDyne electric motorcycle made motorheads drool thanks to its barely-there frame and impressive specs, but it seems having an excess of body can be equally eye-catching. This new all-electric two-wheel concept called “Hope” looks like it was pulled straight out of a Star Wars prop room, and its creator drew inspiration from a truly mind-boggling trio of pop culture icons. Hope is built on a Vectrix VX-1 body, retaining the modest motor which is good for a top of of 75 miles per hour and a range in the neighborhood of 170 miles. What makes the bike unique is its incredibly smooth custom outer shell. Built of fiberglass and aluminum plates, it envelopes the entire bike and even arches over the handlebars. Its creator, Samuel Aguiar, goes by the alias “Shiny Hammer,” and that nickname certainly seems to apply to Hope. Its metal paneling has a mirror-like finish, and Aguiar says the body is both light and strong thanks to the chosen materials. Hope also features upgraded brakes and wheels, along with a tweaked instrument cluster and custom lighting. “I was looking for a design that you would want to hug, without any aggressive shapes,” Aguiar says “Like a blend between a pre-A Porsche 356, an iPhone and a Pokémon.” That’s certainly an interesting trio from which to draw inspiration, but looking at the end result, it actually seems pretty fitting. As an electric vehicle, it’s also virtually silent, which makes it even more fun, according to its owner. “Being quiet, people look at it more than if it was noisy—and you can hear them talking about it, which is funny,” he says. “Riding the bike at night makes you feel like a ninja, which I love.” [© 2017 BGR Media] For EVLN EV-newswire posts use: http://evdl.org/evln/ {brucedp.neocities.org} -- Sent from: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/ ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)
[EVDL] EVLN: Audi EVs are to be built at its plants across/around the world
http://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/2017/09/27/audi-electric-cars-to-be-built-around-world.html Audi electric cars to be built around the world September 27, 2017 Auto Reuters Audi will build electric vehicles at its plants across the world, including sites in Mexico and Hungary, the premium carmaker said on Wednesday, detailing its zero-emission plans. The Volkswagen-owned business last year awarded production of its first mass-produced electric sport-utility vehicle to a plant in Brussels, and has since been pressured by labor unions to allocate electric car projects to Germany. “In future, electric cars will roll off the line in all of our plants,” chief executive Rupert Stadler told a gathering of 7,000 workers at Audi’s base in Ingolstadt. Besides Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm in Germany, which employ two thirds of Audi’s 88,000 workers, the carmaker owns plants in Belgium, Mexico and Hungary and uses a network of facilities run by Volkswagen (VW) and Skoda to build vehicles overseas. Audi plans to roll out more than 20 electrified vehicles before 2025, with about a dozen designed to be battery-only, development chief Peter Mertens said, mirroring the zero-emissions push by parent VW. Separately, labor boss Peter Mosch on Wednesday called on top management to speed up assigning production of electric cars to Germany, as staff in Audi’s home market fear they could lose out in the race for zero emissions orders and projects. “The workforce here wants to see results no later than by the end of this year,” Mosch told the Ingolstadt meeting. Workers are also grappling with the fallout of the VW group’s diesel emissions test cheating scandal, which involved some Audi models, and a costly business transformation. “We need clarity,” said Mosch, a member of both Audi’s and the VW group’s supervisory boards. I'm still driving my Honda Insight that I bought brand new in 2001. This weekend I bought my wife a 2016 Prius Prime Advanced. For those that are not familiar, the Prime is the newest Plug-in Hybrid from Toyota. From an EV point of view it has almost as much range as any of my DIY EVs have ever had, and so much more to offer. I'm still a little jealous that people can just walk into a dealership and get everything I had to spend years of manual labor to obtain, but not really. I know there are those on this list that will always be skeptical, but I think we have finally tipped the balance and EVs are here for good... In no small part due to the success of both Tesla and Toyota. I could never get my wife to drive electric in something I put together myself and not even a long range EV like the Bolt or Tesla 3 interest her as a primary vehicle, but when I put a plug-in hybrid in front of her with all the latest features and seamless operation all she wants to do is plan trips so she can drive electric only :) The Henry fleet is now a mixture of 3 hybrids (1 -PIH) and two EVs. Schwarzenegger along with Kreisel Electric unveiled an all-electric Hummer prototype along the lines of the inauguration of the companys new R facility. Kreisel Electric, a small Austria-based startup for converting internal combustion vehicle to electric, earlier this year built a custom all-electric Mercedes G-Class for Schwarzenegger, and he was present again yesterday to unveil the electric Hummer. "Kreisel Electric electrified my G-class last winter. And now a Hummer. If Kreisel keeps it up at this pace, I will soon be able to fly here from LA in an electric airplane," said Arnold Schwarzenegger. The all-electric Hummer H1 is a soft top prototype and is powered by electric motor on each axle. With a capacity of 100kwh batteries, the pair of electric motors produces 360kw (480bhp). The electric Hummer prototype weighs 3,300kg, has a top speed of 120km/h and a range of around 300km. But the not so good news is that Kreisel Electric is not planning to sell the all-electric Hummer. The company says that the prototype is intended to demonstrate the capabilities of its technology. "With our electrified prototypes, we want to show what is possible using Kreisel technology, says Kreisel Electric co-founder Markus Kreisel. We will certainly not mass-produce these models. But our Hummer is a powerhouse in wolfs clothing, one that drives so quietly even the sheep are not disturbed." Kreisels primary business is to produce battery packs for electric vehicles (EVs) and to showcase their technology, they made EV conversions like a VW e-Golf with a 55kWh battery pack and $1 million classic Porsche 910 as well. DriveSpark Thinks! The gas-guzzling Hummer was discontinued because it was highly pollutant and the electric Hummer could have solved the issue of pollution and many potential buyers could have benefitted. With Kreisel Electric showcasing its potential of converting a polluting vehicle to almost clean and green vehicle, we wish Kreisel changes its decision and starts producing the all-electric Hummer. [EVDL] EVLN: Automakers pay Tesla $1B for carbon-credits> “Nobody’s happy”
https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/2017/09/25/funding-tesla-ticks-off-automakers-needing-electric-car-credits Funding Tesla Angers Automakers That Need Electric Car Credits Sep 25, 2017 John Lippert,Ryan Beene (Bloomberg) Tesla Inc. has generated nearly $1 billion in revenue the last five years from an unlikely source: Rival automakers. The payments are part of an unpopular system in California that’s poised to proliferate elsewhere. California requires that automakers sell electric and other non-polluting vehicles in proportion to their market share. If the manufacturers don’t sell enough of them, they have to purchase credits from competitors like Tesla to make up the difference. Tesla, which exclusively sells battery-powered models, sold $302.3 million in regulatory credits last year alone. China and the European Union -- two of the world’s biggest auto markets -- are considering mandates and credit systems similar to California’s. If California is any guide, automakers will resent having to buy from peers, including the electric-car maker led by Elon Musk. “It really makes them mad that Tesla got so much of a boost out of being the only purely electric car manufacturer out there,” Mary Nichols, the chair of the California Air Resources Board, said in an interview Friday at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York. “In effect, they helped to finance this upstart company which now has all the glamour.” For all the flack California has taken from traditional carmakers for how its mandate system has benefited Tesla, Musk also has been a critic. Tesla’s chief executive officer last year said the Air Resources Board was being “incredibly weak” and called its standards “pathetically low.” Rules should be tougher and the credits should be worth more, he said. “Nobody’s happy,” Nichols said. “That’s my mantra.” [© 2017 BloombergQuint] For EVLN EV-newswire posts use: http://evdl.org/evln/ {brucedp.neocities.org} -- Sent from: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/ ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org Please discuss EV drag racing at NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

It’s pretty rare that any of them actually come to fruition. But I was sent one that, while still very much non-existent, was charming and interesting enough that I want to show it to all of you. It’s called NOBE (the website doesn’t seem to work yet), it’s Estonian, and just look at the damn thing. I’m a sucker for weird old microcars and retro designs, so this thing is pretty much just a thirst trap tailor-made to rope me in. Whatever; it worked. I think the design for this is absolutely lovely, and if they can somehow maintain the look in a production model (I’m told a physical prototype is about to be built), I’ll be thrilled. The design is clearly based on a late ‘50 to early ‘60s-era European automotive design vocabulary. The front end feels a lot like an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, with the central triangular grille inverted here. The rear quarter windows and greenhouse profile sort of remind me of a Studebaker Avanti, and from above the tail-dragging three-wheel design and overall teardrop shape with the open roof remind me a bit of a Messerschmitt Kabinenroller. There’s a lot of design references going on here, but overall I think it manages to work together. The three-wheel design also gives me some hope for the car, because three wheels means that it could, hypothetically, come to the U.S. and be free from all those crash-testing rules that we all know it won’t pass. The one good thing Elio has done is paved the way for three-wheeled cars to be legal in most states, so that lack of a fourth wheel is actually what makes this actually plausible for sale in America. The proposed specs on the NOBE are that its electric, making a maximum 45 kW, or 60 horsepower, which seems pretty substantial for something like this. That 60 hp seems to be spread over three motors, I suppose each making 20 hp? They’re optimistic about the future. The range is targeted at 160 km, or 100 miles, which, again, would be very good; that’s about on par with what current Nissan Leafs get, and, trust me, you’d much rather be seen in one of these. Technically, it’s an interesting three-wheeler because it’s all-wheel drive; I guess it’d be a 3x3? I’d only seen that on specialized ATVs, so it’s interesting to see it proposed here. What’s most interesting to me is an innovation you can see in that diagram to the right there. The main battery is that big box up front, but look right behind it, in the passenger’s footwell—see that little beige box? That’s a battery, too. This briefcase-mounted battery is designed to be easily removed and taken from the car for recharging. It acts as a supplemental auxiliary battery, either providing power for auxiliary systems or providing up to 40 km (24 miles) of additional range. I think this is a fantastic solution for how to deal with the still-very-inadequate charging infrastructure. Even if you have nowhere to charge your car at your office or home or a friend’s place or whatever, it’s a great way to be sure you can at least get an extra 20 miles of range to get home or wherever. Now, this is all just a concept, but based on some other work I’d done involving the idea of removable batteries, I think such a battery, with about 20-25 miles of range, could weigh about 40 lbs. Maybe less, since the demands of the NOBE are not as much as what I was looking at. That’s definitely more on the luggable side, but it is possible. The NOBE people also described a plan to me about a way to tow the car with a normal, full-sized car to charge it up. Like, you’d tow it like a trailer to a big city, park the full-size car outside the city, and use your charming little electric three-wheeler in the dense metropolis, all charged
